I've just finished reading both your Perth Shifter books in just 1 weekend because they were SO. GOOD.
Would you ever write oneshots of Braden's second heat with Coll and Aodhan's first heat with Thomas or the first time they have sex?
Also, Hunter. I think I've fallen in love with the sad alpha boi 😭 Will he be getting his own book one day?

I'm so glad you enjoyed the Perth Shifters books! That makes me so so happy.
Unfortunately for now, everything to do with Perth Shifters is kind of benched since The Gentle Wolf bombed financially. (To give you some perspective, I make more in a month on Patreon than I have in The Gentle Wolf's entire lifetime).
I really want to write Hunter's book, but if I do, it'll probably be via Patreon first as a serial since that's definitely the way I tend to do things! I already have a playlist and a name for his book and like... I know who his partner will be and I have a plot, so it's mostly just down to...whether I want to take a huge financial risk like that again, and in today's economic climate I can't justify it. Unfortunately my books just do not do as well as my serials! And for similar reasons writing oneshots of like Braden/Coll and Aodhan/Thomas are also harder to justify. Like I don't *only* write for money, but that was the *main* reason I wrote the Perth Shifters books, so if they don't make an income, they have to give way to the stuff I like writing most at the moment that *also* keep me going economically. :D But I have not forgotten about Hunter! He's just...having a break for a little while, lol.
If you're interested in more omegaverse from me though, I'm writing an original (and completely free) serial right now which uses some of the same biology and other worldbuilding (though it's more dystopian), and is even still set in Western Australia, in my Underline the Black series!
I tend to write a lot of the same kind of vibes in my serial writing (trauma recovery, hurt/comfort, happy endings), so you may enjoy it! And if you only like finished stories there's a lot of those there too. :D

Melantha turned a cold stare upon her sister, feeling embarrassed, although she was unsure as to why.
Lyanna looked bored in her blue dress as she stabbed her food, eyes dancing around the room.
"I think it's a fine name, fit for a fine princess." Rhaegar spoke in her favor quickly, shooting Lyanna the briefest of smiles, not breaking eye contact.

"Sansa = Ned 2.0 and Arya = Catelyn 2.0" is one of those takes where you can just tell people are more attached to the aesthetic than anything. "The Stark girls are most like the parent they look least like" sounds good on paper and people run with the idea, regardless of how it actually fits into the story. A majority of the justification relies on misinterpreting all of their characters + a healthy dose of fanon. What gets me is that this is the same fandom that insists that Lyanna, only compared to Arya in the text, is equal parts Arya and Sansa but Ned and Catelyn, two fully fleshed-out and complex characters, have to be more like one girl or the other? There's just nothing in the story to justify being so adamant about these comparisons. Arya and Sansa have parallels with both of their parents but at the end of the day, they are unique characters with their own stories. I'll never understand why people want to flatten these complex characters down to their most basic tropes and fit them into restrictive boxes just for a "poetical~" comparison.

Her approach is much closer to Catelyn's than Ned's#I don't understand why people have all of the sudden decided that the Sansa/Cat parallels are shallow when they're#very similar characters and Sansa's current plot actually revolves around that fact#obviously they're not exactly alike but no two characters are or even meant to be...their comparisons are still very valid#tired of being expected to accept an idea just because enough people repeat it

Lately I have been trying to learn more about story structure and have been rereading books I've enjoyed while trying to pay attention to the structure specifically. I reread The Gentle Wolf and was just wondering, if you don't mind answering, is structure something you make a point to think about along with character/plot while you're planning out novel-length projects, or is it more something that happens instinctually for you?
Hi anon,
Tbh the answer for both things is kind of true when it comes to novels? I've talked a lot in the past about how I use a 3-act structure, and A/B/C storylines, so you only need to go back into the pia on writing tag to see some of those posts that have more of an explanation.
But I also generally speaking look at wordcount. I work out that I want to write a 90k story (give or take 10k words) - which is a standard novel). I generally divide that number by 4.5k (average chapter length, give or take 1000 words) and that leaves me with knowing exactly how many chapters I have to tell my story in.
From there, I mostly focus on having each chapter not be too 'busy' (i.e. focus around one major scene. The only exception are what I call 'transitional' chapters, where time gets super non-linear and I just skip ahead through a bunch of smaller scenes), and cleanly getting through my plot points as much as possible. In the chapter plan, everything is extremely short-handed. An example of my The Gentle Wolf chapter plan looked like this (copy/pasting from my chapter plan):
AODHAN
Thomas visiting Little Star. Aodhan happy to see him. They chat, and Aodhan realises he likes Thomas (or has known for a while) but that it’s been 2 years and he’s probably missed the mark. Thomas expresses needing information for his museum and because Aodhan wants to establish more of a connection, he suggests his grandfather.
THOMAS
Thomas meets Aodhan at Iona’s house. Iona treats Aodhan badly and Thomas feels bad. Wonders how this is connected to Aodhan’s ‘absences.’ The information Aodhan has is good. Thomas marvels because he has zero connection to his own wolf family, as he was put up for adoption. Aodhan mentions loving shifting, asking if Thomas would ever do it with him, but Thomas redirects: ‘I don’t like the loss of control.’
AODHAN
Aodhan with Hunter, shifting, chatting about Thomas. Hunter says Aodhan should just tell Thomas that he likes him. Aodhan gets a call, and leaves to see his father. Later he lays in bed and decides the worst thing about him isn’t that he’s demisexual.
(These are chapters 1-3 - Tumblr's formatting is weird and I don't want to touch it, lol).
The entire chapter plan is 1000 words, and one or two chapter descriptions are only one sentence. When that happens, it means I know around that point I'll need 'more' but can't figure out what I need yet at the beginning of the story. I leave those chapters as kind of empty spots for me to put any extra stuff in that might be relevant at the time.
But anyway you can see from chapter 1 we establish the unrequited aspect of Aodhan's feelings for Thomas, as well as Aodhan's workplace, and Aodhan's family as historically significant. In chaptaer 2, we meet Aodhan's family, and we learn more about Thomas' issues with shifting. In chapter 3, we learn that Aodhan is struggling over whether or not to tell Thomas he likes him, etc.
The Gentle Wolf actually had pretty slow / gentle pacing on purpose. But I tend to go with chapter plans like this because I just want bare bones of the events that are happening, or the emotionally significant events. I've got friends who write really long chapter plans (they're basically just writing a skeleton draft), but I've always done it this way - leave them as short as possible, focus on how to make these basic points powerful.
I don't chapter plan most of what I write, and the more complicated a story is, the less likely I am to plan it out (with the exception of The Ice Plague). The reasons for that are that I've had 9 years of practice writing serials, and I actually feel like I'm stronger at winging it and creatively figuring my way out of dead ends, than I am at pre-planning a story. So that's where the 'both' part comes in. I will also throw out an entire chapter's description if I think of something better as I'm writing the story.
I would say overall structure is pretty innate in the sense that...I've read thousands of books. I've watched thousands of TV episodes and hundreds of movies. I've read thousands of fanfics over the years. And I've done university-level courses in Scriptwriting and Creative Writing. There's so many different ways to look at story structure (3 act? 5 act? 9 act? etc.) I am a character first writer always, for better or worse, and I am mostly just interested in following characters through a story.
I try and avoid reading too many books on 'how to write' but I do like Dan Harmon's Story Circle technique (I learned about it late though, not at the beginning) and I feel inspired by the way Studio Ghibli tells a story, and many fanfiction writers that I love reading. I also find books written by writers tend to be extremely rigid and 'do it this way or else' (which is annoying when you realise they're all teaching you different ways), and a little (or a lot - in the case of Stephen King) ableist. So I avoid em! I'm the first person to say I'm not a great writer, but I like what I write, and since the great writers aren't writing specifically for me (not enough hurt/comfort, not enough angst, not enough BDSM, not enough diversity, not enough sitting with characters as they just talk about stuff and figure stuff out, not enough non-sexual touch, etc), I figured I'd fill that gap ;)
If someone wants to be a successful author, I don't think they should write like me, so...I'm just going to leave on that parting note, lol. There's a lot of other authors doing it better out there, just be wary of anyone who says that their way is the best and/or only way.

Being the partner of Kaku meant keeping private was a must.
No one really knew you existed, but you knew it was for your own safety. Being part of CP9 was difficult enough for Kaku, but having a weakness, such as yourself, made the man incredibly anxious.
You sighed through your nose as your Den Den began ringing again, not even an hour after you'd already hung up on your lover. Rolling your eyes slightly, you lifted the receiver and drawled out,
“Yes, my love?”
There was silence on the other end before a soft chuckle rang through, the sound making your heart leap in your chest as you realized it was not Kaku on the other line.
“Y/N.”
Your jaw dropped in shock and nervousness, a shaky laugh leaving you as you nearly coughed out,
“Ah, Mr. Blueno sir, I am so sorry, I was not expecting your call.”
The Den Den frowned slightly, showing the expression of the man on the other line as he bit out jokingly,
“I couldn't tell.”
There was a more comfortable silence after a moment, your eyes unwavering from the Den Den Mushi as you finally asked,
“Is… is something wrong?”
Blueno cleared his throat gently before replying,
“Kaku asked me to check on you.”
You couldn't stop the slightly annoyed groan that left you, holding your burning face in a weak palm as you barely got out,
“I'm so sorry.”
There was confusion from the man as he asked,
“Why?”
You sighed softly through your nose before you replied,
“You have much more important things to do with your life, I know this for a fact.”
There was silence from Blueno for a moment before he commented lightly,
“You are important to Kaku, which makes you important to all of us. It's no bother.”
You frowned slightly, metaphorically holding your heart in your hands as it raced. It was rare for Blueno to speak to you, let alone to reassure you like this and it made you feel… special.
“... Thank you, sir.”
You could practically hear the amusement in his voice as he commented back,
“You're welcome. I'll call again soon, if he asks. Kaku apologizes for being so busy.”
You shook your head even though he couldn't see it, throwing your Den Den a soft look as you laughed slightly,
“I'm not bothered, truly. I know how important his job is, and I understand how hard it is. I'm not worried in the slightest.”
There was another moment of silence before you continued,
“... He always comes home. No matter what.”
Blueno gave a hum in response, clearly impressed with your answer.
“Enjoy your afternoon, Y/N.”
“You as well, sir. Thank you.”

Sighing to yourself, you hung up the receiver and fed your Den Den a piece of crisp lettuce, his favourite snack. Patting his little eyeballs gently, you then moved away from your comfy chair and decided to pass time with a bath, making your way to the washroom and grabbing a change of clothes on the way.
It wasn't long until you were resting comfortably in the bath, the tub filled to the brim with vanilla scented bubbles. You had your eyes closed, soft music playing from a radio off to the side. After what felt like at least an hour, you sat up and ran a lazy hand through your now soft hair, breathing a gentle sigh as you peeked your eyes open, only to shriek as you suddenly came face to face with someone.
Whipping a hand back, you punched out, quick and hard, just like Kaku taught you and you hit flesh, hearing a crash and a groan as you pulled yourself up from the tub. Breathing heavily, you peeked over the massive amount of bubbles and gasped in shock as you saw none other than Kaku laying on the floor, a dazed expression on his face with a red welt steadily growing on his cheek.
“You… did great, my love,” he croaked out, slowly, groaning to himself as he pulled himself into a cross-legged position. Your mouth dropped open in shock, staring at your lover (who was not due to be home for another few days, mind you) before you nearly leapt from the tub, tears and bubbles stinging your eyes as you crashed into him.
“You're home,” you blubbering out, pressing your naked and soaked body to his as you peppered his face with warm kisses. Strong arms wrapped around you and your favourite sound of chuckling met your ears as calloused fingers ran over your slippery back.
“I sure am, little filly mine.”
Sniffling with a sad frown, you stared up at him with wide eyes, confused though elated he was home so early.
“But… Mr. Blueno called… he said-”
Kaku laughed, his cheeks tinted pink as he stared back with a bright reply of,
“All part of the plan!”
He grinned and pulled you closer, pressing a hot kiss to your forehead before he murmured gently,
“And I think I pulled it off pretty well.”
You laughed in response, curling into him for a moment before pulling back, slightly embarrassed and flustered as you pulled him from the floor.
“I'm so sorry my love-” you started, only to be cut off as Kaku pulled you into a deep kiss, one of his hands cradling the back of your head. He pulled back for only a moment to reply softly,
“Never apologize for being on your toes. You did good, my darling.”
Next thing you knew, you were both back in the tub, your back pressed against his toned chest as he pressed butterfly kisses to the side of your face. You turned your head slightly and pressed a kiss to his nose, pulling a weak chuckle from him as one of his hands wandered lower.
Your head fell back against the front of his shoulder, cradled against the side of his face as his fingers pressed over your warmth.
“I'm going to make it up to you,” he murmured against your hair, his eyes shut as he breathed you in.
“You have nothing to make up for,” you replied just as softly, one of your hands moving to hold his face in your palm. He practically purred into your touch, a low rumble vibrating from his chest against your back.
“I've been away too long,” he continued, almost as if you hadn't even spoken. His fingers pressed into you, and your eyes rolled back, the familiar feeling of him filling you making your stomach filp and your heart stutter.
Kaku's voice held a tone of certainty as he promised,
“... I'm going to make it up to you.”
