horror • giallo horror
a giallo film is a stylish and violent crime thriller hailing from italy. the gore, creepy visuals, and similarities to slashers often associated with the giallo genre lend strong connective tissue to the horror genre.

Halloween 2022 marathon: 7
I didn’t get a ton of movies in this week-- my life has become insanely busy, all my plans tend to get interrupted by weird surprises (not even joking-- my birthday get-together has been postponed twice already), and I just got a new video game (and by new, I mean it’s from 2001 and I’ve never played it before), so that takes up time too.
Anyway, that’s my excuse.
The Girl Who Knew Too Much (dir. Mario Bava, 1963)

American tourist Nora Davis visits Rome in the hopes of a good time and a break from her usual entertainment of murder mysteries. Unfortunately, she becomes the star of a murder mystery in real life. After witnessing a killing and not being believed by the authorities, Nora seeks to discover the truth, even if it means becoming a target herself.
My second Mario Bava movie, The Girl Who Knew Too Much is more of a Hitchcockian mystery-thriller than the proto-slasher Blood and Black Lace is. Unlike the later movie, this one has more of a protagonist and she’s charming and likeable. One cool detail-- the character draws upon a nerdy love of murder mysteries and while this causes the police to write her off as “imaginative,” it makes her a bit savvy in her sleuthing. It also leads to a delightful sequence in which she booby traps her house, fully expecting the killer to appear-- but I don’t want to spoil it.
Overall, this is a solid, fun little movie that never outstays its welcome. The pacing is brisk, the suspense is strong, and the lighting is damn phenomenal.
