real talk on the "access to healthcare" thing I have been to the hospital four times in the past month (two departments), had one online appointment with a specialist, and i have two different online appointments tomorrow. oh and I am seeing a dentist next week for the first time since 2019. admittedly one of the online appts tomorrow is one i had to pay through the nose for (goddamn gender healthcare) and the dentist may charge me lots of money depending on how bad the whole gum disease situation turns out to be but the others are free and all in all i am DOING A HEALTHCARE, okay, I am attempting to look after this meatsack as much as I can while I actually have a fixed address and before the NHS collapses entirely

oof yeah, 44% of the wastewater surveillance sites (currently our best indicator after hospitalizations/deaths for COVID community transmission levels) that the CDC receives info from are in that 80-100% bucket. (dug a little deeper into their metrics for ww surveillance, basically it's like a percentile of the individual ww surveillance sites previous data, so can be a bit inaccurate but is a best possible measure from such a broad epidemiological surveillance data source). yikes.

Saw someone on Twitter complaining that tv shows and books and such made during modern times often don’t depict anything having to do with the pandemic and how it’s some big conspiracy about pandemic denial and I can understand why someone would think that considering all the denial irl but personally I don’t want to depict Covid in my work because the pandemic completely affected so many aspects of our lives and by depicting it in my work I’d have to completely change so many parts of my stories because there’s no way the events would go as planned if there was a pandemic happening and I’ve been writing these stories for YEARS, since before the pandemic, and I don’t want to change anything and even if the work was new, how do you incorporate this huge life event into your story without it taking away all the focus?

#writing #like I get that not writing about Covid is like writing a 1930s show without the Great Depression #but even with that I feel like it’s hard to create a story in the 1930s without it being ABOUT the Great Depression #and back then there were significantly less people making art so it affected less people #with our heavily saturated entertainment forms everywhere we looked there would be Covid #any character that’s political would HAVE to talk about the pandemic #any character that’s disabled would HAVE to take precautions to avoid illness #any character that’s a doctor would HAVE to constantly have patients with Covid and talk about Covid #it would take too much focus away from the real story #and if you wanted to write something taking place in 2020 then they’d HAVE to stay indoors if they’re not an inherently selfish character #if you have characters who are teachers they HAVE to do online learning and not actually be in the classroom #there goes your school centered drama #can’t have Abby have an affair with a teacher when they’re never in the same room #can’t have Bridget and Jessica gossiping about Linda sleeping with brad if they never meet face to face #you can have superstore have their essential worker storyline cuz it makes sense #or have your first responders mask up when out on the job cuz it doesn’t take away from the story #but so much of it WOULD and I don’t know how to address it without pulling focus #how am I supposed to write my plotline of x finding out that y slept with z if it takes place in April 2020 #and they wouldn’t be in the same TOWN anymore? #how am I supposed to have y get over x by going out to a club and getting drunk when she’s a leftist who would never DARE go to a club #during fall 2021??? #how do I still write these plotlines without the pandemic? #I can’t #so I imagine my work is in an alternate universe where the pandemic never happened #but also somehow Taylor still wrote folkmore cuz tolerate it works too damn well for Inez for my characters not to mention it #and I get why other writers choose to avoid it too because it just doesn’t work in their world #and that’s not about denying the pandemic that’s recognizing it was too important to depict naturally #ugh anyways here I go on another rant no one will read #if you actually read all this I’m in love with you

Got 2nd booster shot yesterday (4th overall), and damn, not since the first shot did i feel those side effects that intense.

Literally like making a choice between laying in bed all day (which makes all my blood turn to jelly and causes headache) or walking around at least even though my bones and muscles ache so...

People who try to analyze what happened on Tumblr on November 5th, 2020, often really overstate how much it was actually “about” Supernatural. As someone who has never been in the supernatural fandom ever but dID join in on the hysterical destielposting—it was really more about the stress of the pandemic and the 2020 presidential election.

The two biggest Youtubers I’ve seen try to dissect “what happened that November 5th” in video essays both weren’t American—- and I think that explains why they both tried to explain the hysteria primarily via analyzing the Supernatural fandom/the original show, rather than through the lens of the election. And while those videos are cool, valid, informational, and make lots of really well-considered interesting points— I can tell you that me and almost all my mutuals had literally no knowledge or interest in the fact that “oh supernatural had made nods at the ship in the past but the creators were adamant that I wouldn’t be canon” or etc etc etc etc. the first time I learned about any of that context was way later, watching videos where people claimed that fandom history context (that I did not know anything about) was the actual reason for the hysteria.

But the reality is that people latched on to the Destiel stuff because it was a piece of big useless inane zero-stakes fandom news in a time when we were desperately waiting for serious high stakes election news. We were latching onto a “positive “ piece of inane stupid fandom news in a time of great stress, with all the desperation of a drowning man who latches onto whatever piece of wood will keep him afloat.

The core of the hysteria was that Americans (who make up a huge chunk of tumblr’s userbase) were currently glued to their laptops watching the live presidential election vote counts come in. These vote counts were taking an extended amount of time due to the pandemic causing high numbers of mail-in ballots, resulting in a constant state of Election Day Stress for multiple days straight.

This was also during the height of the Pandemic. People had predicted Trump’s presidency would be bad; no one had predicted it would be this apocalyptically bad. No one had predicted pandemics and lockdowns and hospitals overflowing with bodybags. remember Trump spreading Covid lies and conspiracies?? There were so many Qanon conspiracies about democrats being Satanic child traffickers who had to be put to death, and coup threats were mounting from the right wing side. It seemed like this election was a choice between ‘centrist democrat’ and “apocalyptic right wing conspiracy theory authoritarianism,” in the midst of pandemic conditions that people feared would never ever improve— and it seemed like a close election.

Another major point was that Trump voters were more likely to be antimaskers/Covid deniers, while Biden voters were more likely to take the pandemic seriously— so Biden voters were more likely to send in mail-in ballots instead of risking the in-person voting crowds, which meant their ballots would take much longer to count. And so, in many state electoral vote counts, it would initially seem like Trump was very far in the lead— only for Biden to slooooowly build up an agonizingly small lead as the mail in ballots came in, and then defeat Trump at the very end.

So you’re just watching these news sites giving live election updates, refreshing the page every 2 minutes to see if you’re going to live under a spineless centrist democrat or a literal Qanon Dictatorship. And then you go on tumblr to distract yourself, and there’s more election posting, and more agonizing over the votes, and more stress and despair—-

And then it’s been days and we’re right at the crucial tipping point where it’s anyone’s game and the next few hours will determine whether Trump will win, so you need to keep your eye on the vote count, because the next hours will determine the future of the pandemic and your country and your plans for your entire life—

And then stupid Destiel becomes canon! And it becomes canon in the silliest way possible!

If Destiel had become canon at any other time, it would have been a big goofy tumblr celebration? But we wouldn’t have gotten the insane explosion of hysterical interaction.

The entire core of it was the contrast between the inane meaningless stupidity of fandom news vs the actual stressful election news you wanted to hear! It really is best conveyed in that meme where Castiel says “I love you” and Dean indifferently responds with a piece of important election news.

It’s about the contrast between the low-stakes inanity of fandom and the massive life-destroying stakes of a terrifying election. There really was no reason it had be Supernatural specifically, except that Supernatural was a thing everyone knew basic things about from dashboard osmosis— it could’ve been any other equally huge silly fandom ship news about a ship everyone *knew of* but might not necessarily be invested in (ex. Stucky becoming canon, Johnlock becoming canon, Kirk/Spock becoming more canon somehow, etc etc etc.)

I think it’s true that people who weren’t paying agonizingly close attention to the American election news got swept up in it, and that non American Supernatural fans also were extremely excited for purely fandom reasons — but the entire reason it blew up to an unprecedented degree was because of that core of stressed out terrified Americans glued to their computers watching election results and suddenly receiving stupid fandom news instead, and deciding to just hysterically parodically hyper-celebrate this absurd useless zero-stakes news.

I think it was also all elevated by the fact that, as I said before, this happened at the crucial “tipping point” of the election where the next few hours would determine the winner. The fact that Biden began to slowly develop a lead in the hours after made it feel, hysterically, as if the hours after Destiel became canon was somehow the turning point where he began to win; so celebrating Destiel felt like celebrating that slow turn towards victory.

The tl,dr is that it’s so important to Remember the Fifth of November …..in preparation the inevitable hysteria that will happen in the presidential election on November 5th of next year. XD. Personally I’m rooting for Johnlock or Frodo/Sam to somehow become canon in the eleventh hour right before the democrats win

i think reading the first three shakespeare henriad plays back-to-back-to-back has broken my brain for the last three months

#and i read shakespeare's book: the making of the first folio (2023) by chris laoutaris in between r2 and 1h4.... #april may and june have been highly shakespearean months for me #i haven't read as much shakespeare in recent years as i had been when i first received the riverside shakespeare so i was feeling #some kind of way. wanted to make up for it. #i always tried to read at least one play a year #but now i have a problem. i've read 20 plays and 7 of the plays i have read are english histories #which is too high of a number for my liking. Hozier's mention of the word "hushpukena" (a Choctaw word) in the song Butchered Tongue was, of course, not a random decision. In a song about the pain of being disconnected from your ancestral language and culture as a result of colonization and oppression from outside forces- which is something that both Irish and Native American people have experienced to varying degrees. Not only do Irish and Indigenous people have this shared history of colonization at the hands of the British, but Irish and Indigenous communities have a long history of support for one another.

The usage of "hushpukena" is even more specific and important because it calls back to the mutually positive relationship between Irish and Choctaw people specifically. During the Great Hunger in Ireland, the Choctaw Nation donated $170, which is more than $5,000 in today’s money, to aid the Irish. Out of all American aid given to Ireland during the famine, the donation from the Choctaw Nation was the largest donation given.

In 1990, leaders from the Choctaw Nation visited County Mayo in Ireland to participate in the first annual Famine Walk. In 1992, Irish people visited the Choctaw Nation and participated in a trek to commemorate the Trail of Tears. Also in 1992, a plaque commemorating the Choctaw's aid was installed in the house of the mayor of Dublin. In 1995, the Irish President Mary Robinson visited the tribal headquarters of the Choctaw Nation to thank the Choctaw people for their aid. In 2017, a sculpture named "Kindred Spirits" was built in Cork, Ireland to commemorate the Choctaw's aid and to continue friendship between the two communities. In 2018, the Taoiseach (prime minister) of Ireland visited Choctaw tribal headquarters and stated,"A few years ago, on a visit to Ireland, a representative of the Choctaw Nation called your support for us ‘a sacred memory’. It is that and more. It is a sacred bond, which has joined our peoples together for all time". In 2020, more than $1.8 million was raised by Irish people as aid for Native American people (specifically the Navajo and Hopi) during the pandemic, to help provide food, clean water, and health supplies.
