Gotta say, I don't understand the narrative that Morty is dumb and incompetent. Even the show's marketing feeds into it. He can be passive in some episodes, but he still argues with Rick, makes decisions and joins in on the action. He even bickered with Rick in the pilot, and that was probably his most "passive" appearance.

Yeah, he gets himself in trouble sometimes, but people who don't follow the show seem to think that's ALL he does? Like he's a plot device who exists solely to heighten the stakes by screwing up and making Rick chase after him.

I started thinking about this when I watched The Great Yokai Battle of Akihabara, which is a fantastic short, but Morty's portrayal reflects that stereotype: a goofy, self-absorbed kid who derails Rick's plans by doing stupid things, like pressing a button that literally says "Do Not Press."

I mean, is this how Adult Swim markets the series? I realize that marketing isn't going to involve an in-depth character analysis, but I don't get why this narrative persists after six seasons.

Much of SMT is inspired by Teito Monogatari, with Raidou specifically being a subversion of Kato Yasunori. Kato Yasunori would appear in 2005 film The Great Yokai War, a crossover with Shigeru Mizuki and the 60s Yokai trilogy. His classic imperial Japanese army uniform with his 2005 role as a controller of yokai would later be parodied in the 2021 Rick & Morty short The Great Yokai Battle of Akihabara. Therefore Rick & Morty is SMT related.

I'm not surprised how natural those connections really are.

It's honestly pretty neat to have something as highbrow as Rick and Morty be associated with SMT.

Time for a Night of Movies!

More specifically...A Night of Batman!

After Primal it's Batman: Hush. Batman (Jason O'Mara) finds himself under attack by the mysterious bandage-faced adversary calling himself Hush (Geoffrey Arend). A villain who seems to know everything about the Dark Knight.

Then Later a blast from the past, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. As Batman continues his war on Gotham City's underworld, he discovers a new foe who wants to take that war to a whole new level: the Phantasm, a mysterious masked figure who has killed off several of Gotham's high-profile mob bosses.

And then the three Rick and Morty Shorts: Samurai and Shogun 1 & 2 and the Great Yokai Battle of Akihabara.

Certainly gonna be a pretty a good night of Batman! Especially since this is the first time TAS has been back on the channel since...well...Ever really!
