This post is part of my ongoing record for the new (to me) anime I watch in 2023. I'm excited to see what new shows and films I discover as this list grows through the year.
I guess it's time for another theme month. I rewatched Haikyuu the last week of July and got pumped up to watch more sports anime. So, this month I'm focused on anime about sports. There are some new shows listed but, I also rewatched some of my favorites.

Top 5 Grandparents in Anime
Top 5 Grandparents in Anime
As I write this, tomorrow is apparently international grandparents day, and you know what that means. It means! It means anyone who is a grandparent gets to commit one crime without consequence. Just one! Buckle up! If we all survived international grandparents day and are still around when this post finally publishes, I have decided to put together a little tribute to anime grandparents hoping…

Anime No One Talks About That Live Rent Free In My Brain
There are some anime shows that I've watched, but when I go online I barely see anyone talk about them. Anime that have less than 100k views on My Anime List (I know MAL isn't the only metric out there, but it's a big one).
And yeah, these shows are probably mid to most people. But for one reason or another, I ended up really enjoying them.
So I want to share!
Dr. Ramune -Mysterious Disease Specialist- (Kai Byoui Ramune)
Tumblr media
Dr. Ramune looks like an anime aimed at kids. It's not. The second episode is titled "The Chikuwa Penis", where a man's penis gets replaced by chikuwa - a spongy food commonly found in Japanese dishes like oden.
Dr. Ramune gets werid. And it also gets kind of dark. There's an abusive cult storyline, an arc dealing with grief gone bad, and generally some really horrible things that happen to the patients that Dr. Ramune and his assistant help out.
I think this anime would have received more attention if the character designs were more adult? Or maybe the first episode being kind of wacky with a kid that cries condiments was a no-go? But I implore you to give this show a watch.
Muteking the Dancing Hero
Tumblr media
I am a sucker for transformation super hero/tokusatsu-esque anime. And the Muteking song that plays (nearly) every episode when he transforms and fights the bad guys is a consistent ear-worm even years later.
This is another anime that looks like it's aimed for kids. And it is definitely more kid-friendly than Dr. Ramune. But this show also has some weird and darker moments, especially towards the end of the show.
I say at least watch it for the music. Maybe you'll enjoy it as much as I did. If nothing else, maybe someone else will know what the heck I'm singing every now and again.
The Gymnastics Samurai (Taisou Zamurai)
Tumblr media
This anime has the looks and character designs that should have attracted an audience, but the pacing/plot lacked a lot of focus. It's half sports anime, with training, rivalry, and performances (with somewhat decent CGI involved), but the other half is slice of life/drama anime with the realities of being a single parent and missing out on things mixed along with goofy every day activities with a foreigner otaku who suddenly lives with the family.
And there's a weird pet bird too.
The first half walks, the second half sprints to an ending. There are some characters that could have used a lot more fleshing out. But it was fun. Plus the OP gets a thumbs up from me.

Propaganda below the cut!
Jotaro Aragaki
He’s a gymnast that was known as “the samurai” until he got in a slump, but he refuses to give up his passion for the sport. Also his daughter Rei is absolutely adorable
Ray Molina
the best dad in the fucking world. ray molina is my mom <3 he loves and supports his daughter and all he wants is for her to be happy and be able to follow her music dreams but also not pressure her into doing music when she's grieving for however long she needs to. he was ready to move his entire ass home to a different home even though he loved the house and the memories he had there, because he thought it would help her daughter with her grieving process. and he asks before coming into her room and when leaving also asks if she wants him to close the door behind him

kinda weird to me how basically every other language gave all of megamix's sequels unique names and then the english version just didn't bother for 90% of them-

Why older protagonists hit different
There's just something about them... #anime #anitwt #otakuthursday
Welcome back to Otaku Thursday all my weebs and weeaboos! I hope you all enjoyed the You Can’t Know Anime Awards that came out at the end of last month, and if you didn’t, I invite you to read it here! (Shameless plug). Today, as I wind down from such a behemoth of a post, and while we prep for our next big campaign coming at you next week — Doki Doki Days – I thought today would be a great, no…

I prefer sports animes that have adult casts - it's a shame that they're still pretty rare!
The characters are generally less petty (and there are a lot more mature characters who remind teammates when they're being cringe/impolite instead of just one Team Dad trying to reign them all in) and since they're out in the adult world, they tend to have more interesting priorities. I don't like it in High school-based sports animes when characters hold intense grudges or overexert themselves because of something as minor as an inter-high match. But since they're usually 15-17 they don't really have bills or careers to worry about.
I'm about halfway through Salaryman's Club and I'm enjoying watching a bunch of twenty-somethings have fun and network while representing their companies in badminton matches. It's refreshing!

It's me the fool back again with another au this time it's
Actual Criminals Au for P5
Where. They're real criminals.
The metaverse isn't real, and all of them grew up with qualms about how some people get away with everything. And, eventually, they all get the push they need to stop being a bystander and become Phantom Thieves
They all live in the same building, and have a secret lair under it. They pose as normal people with jobs and lives and then at night they're plastering evidence of assaulters all over Shibuya, or leaking videos of insider trading or what's on someone's hardrive
Sometimes they do normal crime like stealing from the rich to fund their bigger operations. Just for fun
Okay let's go down the list
Akira works as a bartender in a fancy hotel bar, and goes home to his "wife", Haru, each night. That's how it appears, at least. As a fresh graduate from secondary school, he ended up coming together with some friends to expose a shitty pervert for who he was, and thus began their lives as the Phantom Thieves. Joker is the ringleader, and known publicly to always be listening from the shadows
Then there's Ryuji, a middle school phys Ed teacher, married to Makoto. It's perceived to be a functioning marriage. He was a founding Thief, and is their Rough'em'up guy. Between Skull and Queen, they get their answers when they want them
Ann is next, wed to Yusuke, working as a model. Mysteriously, the guest room at their place seems to always be occupied by former top athlete Shiho. Ann's love for her best friend was one of the main flames behind the beginning of the Thieves, and Panther is key at tricking their enemies into drinking a spiked drink or spilling secrets for a moment with the attractive blonde
Okay now, Yusuke, he came later. Yeah married to Ann blah blah. He's an artist, paints in a studio all day. His former mentor drove him to the brink, but luckily the Thieves found him there, and gave him the power to drag himself back to his feet. Fox is very feared, as his harsh words and quick moves remind his enemies of an old samurai
Makoto was once looking like she would be another young officer on the streets, doomed to being beat down by the system. Now, she owns a gym a block from where she lives with her husband Ryuji, and moonlights as the fast driving, hard hitting Thief Queen. The only thing that burns brighter than her rage at the failing society around her is her homosexuality.
Software engineer Futaba lives alone, and she likes it that way, supposedly. She's gotten her act together, again, supposedly, and is no longer hacking. Yeah right. After taking down the false shepherd Medjed, Oracle does the computer work for the Thieves, keeping them in the know during missions
The final standard member of the Thieves, Haru, didn't exist until recently. Well, under the name Haru. She used to live as the sole son of the CEO of Okumura Foods, and has found a life that suits her much better. As Haru, she runs a bakery just outside the entrance of her apartment building, and lives with her husband, Akira. As Noir, she's more than willing to show that actions have consequences, though she's often aware enough to keep her act to just frightening rather than deadly
Then it's the half members, Goro and Sumire. They're legally married. One is a top tier detective, the other teaches youth gymnastics. Crow and Violet appear maybe once every other month at most, filling the roles the teams those nights need
--
Okay so this is a Polythieves au, so the married couples above are mostly for cover. Below is a simplified web of the poly workings of the group
Akira -> Goro, Sumire, Ryuji, Ann, Yusuke, Shiho, Haru
Ryuji -> Akira, Ann, Yusuke, Haru
Ann -> Shiho, Akira, Ryuji, Yusuke, Makoto, Haru
Yusuke -> Akira, Goro, Ryuji, Ann
Makoto -> Haru, Ann, Shiho
Futaba -> Sumire
Haru -> Makoto, Akira, Ryuji, Ann, Shiho
Goro -> Akira, Yusuke, Sumire
Sumire -> Akira, Futaba, Goro
I have lots more for this but this is just the like outline post. SEND ME ASKS IF YOU WANNA KNOW ANYTHINF OR HAVE QUESTIONS

Do you have any headcanons about Momakase?
i have a handful of them after all the time i've spent thinking about her 🤭💕💕💕
1.
In Fan Friction, Obake gave Momakase a small graphene shard to help her escape prison. It either came from one of her own blades, or Obake had produced one himself, but that little tool marked the beginning of her whole affair with him and his crew, so I think she kept it after all this time instead of discarding it. Now that Obake is also dead, she holds onto it for additional sentimental reasons. 🥲
2.
I like the idea of Momakase being from the UK, since she's got that British accent in her English, but I believe she was deeply connected to her Japanese roots. Her family used to own a daishō. Maybe they once had more? Maybe she descended from an ancient line of samurai? They're frequent thoughts of Momakase's because she knows how good she is at this stuff. 🥷
3.
Like pretty much the entire population of San Fransokyo, Momakase also fell for the baby mayoi that Mr. Sparkles controlled. Even though she understood what they would become because of Di Amara, she couldn't resist trying to adopt one and it embarrasses her from time to time. But she would have been a great mother. 😔
4.
This one's more about her attire, but, Momakase depends on collapsible heels. With San Fransokyo set in the future and everything, I'm sure they've developed the perfect shoes for good looks and extreme-gymnastics stunts. They're one of the few things Momakase pays for instead of steals. 🫢
5.
Being a sushi chef was something Momakase didn't take seriously until she realized that she was exceptional in the craft. Before, it simply covered her real work as a blade-for-hire. Now, she's very proud of it and even makes good money. If anyone asks her though, she lies and claims she's been in the sushi business her whole life. 🍣

RYOANZUGIE HEADCANONS!
Hi tumblr. Do you like gay people? I sure do!! this was a style test as i've been very inspired by milkkirie lately and wanted to redo my old ryoanzugie lineup. hope u all enjoy <3 more information + text version under the cut!
anzu kinashi is 17, uses any pronouns but prefers she/it/honk, is genderfluid, pansexual, and polyamorous. short and chubby, very circular. her accessories are usually gold. dresses in bright colors, clowncore kidcore kind of stuff. her and ranmaru are best friends!! in school i imagine she excels in sporty extracurriculars, probably does track or something. my idea of school for them is very americanized so i apologize if anyone doesn't really like that. works as a clown on the side. wants to be a gymnast so she could do some cirque du soileil shit!! she is the sun in their relationship ☀️
ryoko hirose is 17, uses they/she pronouns, is nonbinary polyamorous & a lesbian. tall and lanky. triangles. her accessories are usually silver. dresses in comfortable, loose clothing. lots of blues and greys, they are like a dark academia fairycore kind of girl But make it wintery. If that makes sense?? Best friends with Joe and Sara obviously. i imagine they are like.. a really popular person? Very well known in school, probably on a student council. Would be a teachers pet. i headcanon them and joe WERE dating but was like "i am. a lesbian. Help me?" and joe went "yeah ok i got you IF you help me with sara lol" and fake dated for a little while while ryoko wingmanned for joe. I think the two of them are super good friends and bond over being fans of Samurai Yaiba (ryoko is like reko megafan #1.) they are the moon in their relationship 🌙
kugie kizuchi is 17, uses he/she pronouns, is a transmasc nonbinary lesbian & polyamorous. short and blocky, squares and rectangles. accessories are usually bronze but dabbles in a bit of silver. black, dark, leather clothing, he dresses very punk and techwear. this design is simple but i promise i lean more into the leather jackets and spikey accessories and lots of grungey layers. I headcanon him as kind of .. mean, as a front. Very protective of the ones she loves but doesn't allow those to get close to him; keeps up an icy and distant wall. Other than that she's just kinda perpetually chilling. i think he and ranmaru have a love-hate relationship; they're mean to each other for the joke and most people probably think they hate each other but they're pretty solid pals. I know Kugie is supposed to be like sara (kind, dependable and trustworthy) i think she is dependable and trustworthy but NOT super kind. They're on opposite sides of the personality spectrum. sara is sweet and nice but kugie is blunter and ruder but theyre both still good people. he is the star in their relationship ⭐
thank you for reading and thank you for the love.

PJO/HOO/TOA CHARACTERS AND WHAT THEIR ROMAN EMPIRES WOULD HAVE BEEN::::::
Annabeth- Most certainly knew the entire lore of WWE Raw and Smackdown when she was about 8-11. Wanted siblings to tackle so bad.
Percy- The Bermuda Triangle. HOURS spent genuinely sweating about the thought of sea monsters and black holes in the ocean which could maybe get him.
Grover- Mythology. Lore. Everything he could find with amazing world-building and plot points. Certainly kept comparing Greek myths to Norse/Aztec myths and yelling "OH MY GOSH THEY'RE SYNCRONIZED".
Nico- THE OLYMPIC GAMES. Watching gymnastics and wincing everytime it looks like they're gonna fall. Picking random swimmers and betting on who would get a higher position with his sister.
Jason- Honestly, Jason would have DEVOURED the Percy Jackson series. Explains to everyone how Rick Riordan is actually a hidden gem and how he's a crossbreed of Percy and Grovwr.
Piper- OMFG FANFICTION. A devoted fanfiction.net reader until she discovers wattpad and that resets her brain chemistry. Avid reader but also extremely talented AO3 writer. On the Hall of fame of Johnlock writers.
Frank- Penguins. Knew everything about penguins from their feeding habits to their neurological functions. Tried to be a penguin- failed; tried to swim to the south pole to be with penguins- ongoing attempt.
Hazel- Anime. If she and Nico grew up together they would scream the One Piece theme songs at the top of their lungs everyday and randomly whisper the words "Banana Fish" to each other to rekindle the pain.
Lester- The biggest astrology nerd you could ever find. Would immediately explain how the angle of Saturn from the earth is causing your munchies and write a thesis on why scorpios are actually the cause of all the world's problems.
Leo- Cars. I lied. Power fucking rangers. Every single series, every single version; ate it up, bought a power rangers bottle and set the Power Rangers Samurai theme song as his alarm tune.

Hello! Hope your day is going well. I was wondering if for the Compresses Power Rangers Timeline AU, if you could list the teams, who's on each team, their rough age and what they do(and possibly the town's name-or would it make sense to use Angel Grove?). Devon’s dad is still the mayor and Ravi’s mom is still in charge of grid battle force
Dino fury
Music TA: Javi

Library assistants: Ayon and Zayto (Ollie have them a crash course on the Dewey decimal system and hoped for the best)
Fashion teacher: ms. Garcia
Mr. Garcia keeps his regular job but also gives Javi less of a hard time because music teachers are supposed to be able to play a bunch of different instruments and it looks like he has good chance to take Maya’s place when she leaves the school
Solon remains in the base because she is a dinosaur
Extra notes I came up with on the fly
K is growingly more paranoid due to the number of ranger teams she has evidence have robots in their ranks especially the beast morphers since that’s the team their closest too
Preston was “bullied” out of the magic the gathering club by the mystic rangers due to Vida trying to accuse him of being an evil wizard without blowing their cover. Vida’s exact words were “we don’t don’t want your kind around here”. The ninja steel team now thinks the magic the gathering club is homophobic towards Preston and hates them. Ironically the mystic rangers all love the blue ninja steel ranger and the ninja steel rangers really life the mystic force.
Summer after spending the entire night fighting vengix and exhausted as she walks in the door and Mack the day after he found out he’s a robot. “Summer would you still be my friend if I was a robot?” “Absolutely not” cue Mack having a break down in the janitor closet only to be found by Ben and Betty who assure him they would still be his friends even if he was a robot
Mick is the impromptu medic to most of the robotic rangers
Tyzon is not sure what normal human anatomy should look like so he just copies a lot of what he’s seen Dana do but also does know someone from aquatar when he sees one and treats their injuries accordingly and the aquatar rangers just think he’s a human whose really good with secrets
The teachers are youngish (most haven’t hit 30 yet) and I use TA as a short hand for teachers in training so they’re earlier 20s. And then most of the students besides Justin and Nate are between 14-18 with Justin and Nate both being 12.
Generally everyone else is around the age they are in the show

Making sports into drama (and games?)
An anime analysis from a game design perspective
I admit: I am a great sports anime nerd (and I’ve previously written about the volleyball anime Haikyuu and its fandom) – something that also affects my thinking around game design. What makes sports anime so good – better than watching the sports themselves – is that they usually combine the thrill and achievements of those sports with portrayal of the characters performing them. For me, that adds an invaluable component, since I’m also a character and fictional relationships nerd.
Tumblr media
Ookiku Furikabutte - manga by Higuchi Asa
I’ve categorized the series based on how much of the dramatic content focuses on the game or sport itself and how much it relies on other factors, such as relationships between characters outside of sports. I’ll put my main focus on the series that primarily revolve around the sport. Many are based on manga, but not all. (Whether the series originates as manga or not might actually also affect the content, but it’s not something that I’ll go into in this post.)
Categorizing the shows
Series where the drama is primarily built around the content of the sport:
Ookiku Furikabutte/Big Windup (baseball)
Diamond no Ace/Ace of the Diamond (baseball)
Haikyuu!! (volleyball)
Kuroko no Basket/Kuroko’s Basketball (basketball)
Series where the drama is built around a combination of the sport’s content and other factors:
Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteru/Run with the Wind (running)
Tsurune: Kazemai Koukou Kyuudoubu (archery)
Yuri!!! on Ice (figure skating)
2.43: Seiin Koukou Danshi Volley-bu/2.43: Seiin High School Boys Volleyball Team (volleyball)
Days (soccer)
Re-main (water polo)
Ping Pong the Animation (ping pong)
Series where the drama is primarily built around content outside of the sport:
Free! (swimming)
Hoshiai no Sora/When Stars Align (soft tennis)
Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun/Clean Freak Aoyama-kun (soccer)
Cheer Danshi!!/Cheer Boys!! (cheerleading)
Bakuten!!/Backflip!! (rhythmic gymnastics)
Taisou Zamurai / The Gymnastics Samurai (gymnastics)
It’s interesting to see that the focus on sports content could in part be related to which target group the series is aimed towards. It seems like shounen anime (“for boys”) has a larger focus on sports content, whereas shoujo (“for girls”) and seinen (“for grown-ups”) revolve more around relationships.
Could set-based sports with clear positions be easier to dramatize?

Haikyuu!! - manga by Haruichi Furudate
Both volleyball and baseball translate well into anime format. Volleyball’s set-based play makes it easy to create exciting match portrayals. The game involves turn-taking and players’ positions on the court, including who serves and rotates, creating clear recurring moments of suspense. Since the objective is to win the most sets out of a predetermined number, the outcome of a match isn’t known until the decisive set is played.
The psychological play and complexity

Ookiku Furikabutte - manga by Higuchi Asa
The complexity of baseball could be seen as a disadvantage due to its difficulty to comprehend, but it’s a double-edged sword, since the complexity also adds excitement. Baseball matches as a whole can become slow, especially if the teams are adept at defense and don’t allow scoring hits. However, in anime, unlike in reality, there’s the possibility to cut or quickly summarize dull parts of the match.
Baseball and volleyball gameplay loops
A Gameplay Loop is a game design term that is used to describe the repetitive activities that a player will take while playing a game. It, essentially, defines what the player DOES while playing. – Engaged Family Gaming

Diamond no Ace - manga by Terajima Yuuji
In volleyball, a loop begins with one team serving, the ball is then moved between teams by players with various roles (such as setter, wing spiker, blocker, libero) until it hits the floor on one side of the net, determining which team scores a point. This loop is integrated into the larger system by having the first team to reach a certain number of points win the set, while the overall match aims to win the most sets out of (usually) five.
Do shorter loops and turned-based sports make for better drama?
The smallest loops in baseball and volleyball are clear and quite short, allowing for detailed focus on the characters executing decisive actions. The moments before a serve/pitch provide space for inner monologues and character communication. Side changes and innings/sets frame the matches, making it easier for viewers to follow, compared to more fluid sports like basketball or soccer. In turn-based sports, breaks are incorporated into the game’s design. Therefore, I believe that turn-based sports, where players also have very specific roles, are more favorable to portray, than sports where players have more similar roles and the game is more fluid. (Perhaps this is why Kuroko no Basket assigned supernatural abilities to the players, adding an extra dimension to the game that makes it a little more video game-like? Well, it could also be because the creator wanted to make a series about basketball players with supernatural abilities. Personally, I find that supernatural abilities detract from the intrigue of sports, but that’s a matter of taste.)

Teams are great for drama
I believe team sports are better suited for storytelling than individual sports. This might be because team sports allow for more complexity in the narrative, as players within a team can be rivals, while also depending on each other to develop and win. Opposing teams are obvious antagonists, but the most interesting events often happen within the teams, between the characters that viewers have come to know, and whose development they are following. Team sports also have recurring tournaments where teams can face the same opponents multiple times, enabling long series that maintain suspense. This exists in individual sports too, but individual competition feels more one-dimensional than team-based competition. So, aside from game (sports) design itself, the setup around teams, tournaments, and matches also influences the narrative. Series centered on individual sports tend to focus more on character relationships outside of competitions, possibly because the sport itself doesn’t provide enough material to build drama solely around it.
Translating sports into drama - and games!
When translating sports into drama, there are factors that can both facilitate and complicate the dramatic buildup. If the focus is on the game itself, it’s advantageous if the game has a high level of complexity, clear/short loops, and specific roles, preferably with inherent conflicts. Among the sports I’ve seen depicted, I would say that baseball has the greatest potential to create compelling drama. However, with that said, the storyteller’s skill will likely have a bigger impact on the story than the design of the sport itself.
I’ve based this analysis on anime series, and they have their aesthetics, structures and way of portraying things. I’m very curious as to whether the components of a great sports anime – sports/game content together with character development and relationships – could also be made into great games. The content of digital games and anime series are very different, but I think there are still learnings to be made from analysing and also comparing those media forms.

Please let me know through our social channels which games you have played that include sports mechanics and relationships. I have played Pyre, which I think combine those things well. I also have Roller Drama on my to play-list, but I would like to know of more games that focus on sports and relationships (sports relation games!).

A last side note: When there was finally an anime about Water Polo – Re-main – the creators missed the opportunity of telling the amazing story on how this sport might have come into fruition – as a water based version of horse polo, called Polo Aquatic, where players rode on barrels hitting a ball with sticks… I mean, that’s something you can’t exclude!
