[ID: 11 doodles of Umbrella Academy characters in a style imitating the webcomic Paranatural. Allison, Luther, Diego, Klaus, Viktor, and Lila are drawn as kids, approximately 12 yrs old. Ben is a similarly aged ghost. Hazel, Cha Cha, and the Handler are present as well, all looking vaguely villainous. Five is drawn to be maybe in his twenties. All of them have colorful smoke rising from them indicating the powers from Paranatural, except for Viktor and Lila, for whom the smoke is white. End ID.]
Look, a Paranatural au! I wish I had been hit by this muse in time for Masked Author/Artist, but alas it was not to be. If you've read Paranatural is you can probably guess.... basically everything there is to know about this au. If you haven't read Parantural, you should!! It's a wild ride! But also I rambled for a super long time about it under the cut
Everyone has cool spirit powers and can see the dead, so Klaus isn't special sorry Klaus. I'm making up for it by making him directly possessed by a spirit that gives him superpowers, instead of everyone else who has to use a possessed object to get superpowers. I didn't put a ton of thought into what Cool Accessory (possessed object) to give the kids so I could change that later, but for now Allison has a megaphone, Diego has a yo-yo, Viktor has his violin, and Luther doesn't have anything because his dad thinks he needs to learn to control spirit energy on his own. Klaus doesn't have any either because he's possessed directly. I adjusted the rules of Parantural slightly because [Paranatural spoilers!!] in the comic someone with white energy can connect with spirits whose energy is any color. Viktor's should absolutely be white by show rules, but that power set suits Lila a lot better. So in this au, the rules are adjusted so that white can only connect with white, and Lila's is actually colorless (IE, it only looks white now because the background is white). She can't bond with any one spirit for long, but she can bond with any of them for a short time.
Hazel, Cha Cha, Five kind of, and the Handler are all members of a version of Paranatural's Consortium, which I'm just going to call the Commission again because why not. As you may be able to guess, it's slightly more villainous in this au than the Consortium. I wanted AJ to be a high ranking member, but if I made him the Handler's spirit then we wouldn't get to see him ever, so I made him Five's. This was before I remembered that people possessed by spirits look more and more like their spirit over time so the fish head thing could still totally work, so I might revisit that. Hazel and Cha Cha's spirits look like thier masks, of course. I didn't spend much time on the mask/spirit redesign so they're not as fun and funky as I'd like, but they're still reasonable stand-ins. The Handler is this version of the Boss Leader because.... duh. If you've been keeping up with Parantural and are wondering about how That One Thing About Boss Leader translates... I haven't decided yet.
Five is the Mr. Spender of this au. He is possibly the least Mr. Spender-like character to ever exist, but look me in the eyes and tell me that acting as the teacher-supervisor of a club of unruly kids that can see ghosts who is secretly part of a nefarious (?) organization is not where he belongs.
I have a few more doodles of this waiting in the wings! Mostly of Five because I love him. But also if you have stuff you want to see, send it in. No promises I'll draw your suggestion, but the main obstacle between me and drawing more of this is not having concrete ideas for situations to put characters in

Propaganda under the cut.
Doctor Carmilla:
She’s literally the coolest person alive. But fr, she turned her gf into a vampire to stop her from dying of a chronic illness, gf turned abusive so Doc C killed her, fled her home planet and went to space where she was lonely so she created the mechanism, a space crew of immortal pirates. Doc found people who’s bodies broke, replacing one part of them with a mechanism that would keep them alive forever (with consent kind of??). She medically experimented on them and for millennia they roamed the galaxies together on the star ship aurora (a sentient moon-turned-space-ship who is in a loving relationship with one of the mechanisms, nastya rasputina whose mechanism is mercury blood). The doc hated her creations and what they did (mass murder and all that good shit), so she left. She gets such a bad rep in the mechs fandom. People will infantilize the mechanisms while villainizing The Doc. That’s not the story and she realized what she had done to the mechs and left and this is a terrible explanation but i love her sm and i wouldn’t even mind if she turned me into an immortal space pirate.
The Handler:
I know she’s the main villain for seasons 1 and 2 but she’s so slay about it!!! She’s always so calm and collected even when she’s threatening to torture and kill her workers’ loved ones right in front of them, or drowning her boss, or emotionally manipulating her victims! Also she has the best outfits in the entire show

Every single time the Handler touches Five he tenses up. He doesn’t stop her like he would with his siblings because she has the authority there. He doesn’t want to get on her bad side because he needs to stay under the radar, even if he knows he’s already on it. If he acts like he’s complying with things, then she’ll eventually stop paying attention and then he can get away with whatever he needs to do quietly.
And the Handler knows that she’s in control, otherwise why would she get so close to the Commission’s deadliest assassin? She knows he can’t do anything and abuses that power.
That’s some damn good acting.

luther- yes and he’s sad about it :(
diego- no but he makes fun of luther
allison- nope. kind of convinced that it’s not real and everyone just made it up as an inside joke she wasn’t in on as a kid. she’s wildly insecure and bitter about it and is really passive agressive when it’s brought up
klaus- no but he is infinitely curious about what it tastes like and when he was 9 he ate a sliver of a bar of soap and cilantro at the same time to simulate the experience so he could empathize with his siblings. he cried and ran to grace who was confused but supportive and helped him wash his mouth out
five- yes but he doesn’t care. his food opinions and vibes are Very Fucked Up and he used to eat rocks anyway so. you cannot tell me this man didn’t eat rocks in the apocalypse drunkly because he was so hungry i’m sorry. also like cardboard poor baby
ben- thinks he does but he doesn’t. this is og ben bc i’m always posting about him he is the real ben hargreeves to me but this goes for s! ben too. and idk how to explain it either
viktor- yeah but he likes it. he’s like mmmmm and diego is horrified everyone is losing their minds and he’s like yummy :D my favorite
lila- yes but pretends she doesn’t because she’s seen diego make fun of luther for it. he’s all “extra cilantro right babe B)” and she’s like “hell yes” but is sad inside. if she just told him he would never order cilantro on anything again in case she wants to eat some of his food but she’s too far in at this point
sloane- no. she eats all of luther’s cilantro for him though <3
reginald asshole hargreeves- yes and i hope He Fucking Suffers. stupid ass alien tastebuds or whatever. he pretends nothing’s happening because he thinks it’s a human thing and he doesn’t want to blow his cover
grace- she can’t eat, but is aware of the chemical that makes it taste/smell like that because of her advanced sensory hardware and software
the handler- no. she puts cilantro in five’s food because she knows he has the gene. she thinks he’s on to her and picks it out but he just has no reaction. he just doesn’t care lmao. she’s playing these fucking mind games 4d chess and he’s like absentmindedly chewing on checkers
pogo- nope.

How tf does The Handler know what Lila's power is?
How tf does Lila know what her power is?
She can mimic the powers of others
But there weren't any others around when she was growing up
Or.. or where there???

Lila and Five.
One could say they are opposites- Lila is willingly in the Commission, and although she would not have chosen to work there had she had the regular offered choice, she has made no move to remove herself from their position. She loves the Handler because she lives her life in ignorance, while Five hates the Handler for her controlling nature that Lila is too blindsided to see, and he is only at the Commission for a specific reason, and not by his choice. He would leave if he could, and DOES leave, the first chance he gets.
Their main difference is, though: Lila is driven by spite, and Five by duty.
Lila: “Never personal, my ass. I’ve killed. and it was always, ALWAYS personal.”
Lila holds grudges upon people. She kills when she wants to, and she kills unsparingly. Every person who dies at her hand perishes because they have had some part in whatever she is driven to collapse. The reason Lila enjoys the killing more than Five is because she believes with every stab, every bullet, every hit, that the person she is hurting is getting what they deserve. they deserve her contempt and anger and they must accept it because they will die anyway. She smiles while she takes lives, because she is taking vengeance as much as she is causing pain.
Meanwhile, Five: “We took out anyone who messed with the timeline. [...] it was the only way I could get back here.”
Five is motive driven. He knows what he wants and gets things done. Killing is a job, something he does not particularly have fun doing, but partakes in some enjoyment, because every kill is one step closer to getting home. Unlike Lila, he is one step, two steps, three steps, five steps ahead, always thinking of the impact of his decisions and actions, and how they will affect his route home. He knows that if he puts one toe out of line, he could be sent somewhere he will never recover. This scares him. So he is steps and steps ahead of the game, although sometimes it becomes a wall that stops him short, and he must think- how do I get out of this?
The main difference between the two is that Lila thinks from the past, and Five thinks into the future. So yes, their experiences are similar, although inverted, and really, they are complete opposites.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Biologically the daughter of Shannon Quinn, a 16-year-old native of the coastal village of Ballyheigue, Ireland. Where, though, Roisin never grew up. Although Shannon's family, fervent believers and conservative Catholics, immediately believed in divine miracle, vicious rumors spread around the neighborhood questioning if Quinn had truly been chosen by God. Allegations of premarital intercourse and of disguising an unwanted pregnancy became common hearsay, alongside those that saw Shannon as a harbinger of evil and follower of the Devil carrying Satan's offspring. Hence, within months immediately after the birth, the Quinn family resolved, bravely or cowardly, whichever one preferred to deem it, to secretly flee from the village and seek shelter in the farthest and most remote place on Earth: the town of Tasiilag, in cold and distant Greenland.
No one there asked questions. No rumors, no hearsay, no backbiting. Neighbors mostly limited themselves to polite greetings when not completely indifferent. And life was quiet and calm.
Mr. and Mrs. Quinn had their humble fishing business and charity work as well as church related events keeping them busy. And young Shannon, no without difficulty, adapted to motherhood and new schooling, while still excellently pursuing her studies with an even firmer aim of becoming an archaeologist. However, there were secrets that the Quinns held hidden from the eyes of the community, fearful of judgment and prejudice. Secrets that little Roisin, unwitting infant, exposed with every vehement wail she cried far too close to unfamiliar sights. It would happen, in fact, that, sometimes, the tiny stubby fingers would become six on each hand or that, other times, the petite greenish eyes would enlarge to the point of nearly covering the whole minute forehead. Occasionally, at other times, new wings would appear beneath the injured ones of some small bird or claudicant legs of old dogs would return trotting as if rejuvenated.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Minor oddities. Miracles, said the Quinns. Obvious sign that God chose them, they told themselves. Witchcraft, some elderly ladies began to mutter instead. Creepy weirdness, whispered Shannon's classmates. And, soon, even the remotest, most distant place on Earth became like the coastal village the Quinns had escaped from.
Running away again, however, wasn't an option. Not this time.
With meager earnings from fishing business and Shannon's firm refusal, the family was forced to stay and hope that, for little Roisin, fate wouldn't resemble that of the Son of the Lord. And, blessedly, as the years passed and Roisin's miraculous abilities stabilized, the town eventually forgot about the infant's oddities and began, instead, to cherish the child's sweetness. It wasn't uncommon for someone to knock on the Quinns' door pleading for help with some aching dog or limping cat. And then, when one day, as coincidental as her birth was, little Roisin, barely two years old, regenerated the long-cut-off pinkie finger of an elderly lady, the demands for help grew so numerous that, soon, the Quinns found themselves compelled to mark appointments on the calendar. And it took even less, amid arrogance and necessity, to establish a price list of deliverable miracles.
Tumblr media
Within three years Roisin found herself the center of attention of the entire Tasiilag community and the Quinn family's major source of income. However, as her prestige and wealth grew, the little girl's abilities seemed to diminish and her health to deteriorate. Fevers and coughs became the norm of every day, frequent dizziness and fainting a habit, and, increasingly often, it seemed that Roisin suffered complete immobility of her limbs for days at a time. To the extent that, at the age of four and a half, it became necessary, upon the behest of the only local doctor, to rush her to the hospital in the capital, Nuuk, and properly examine her. And, just as the smart Dr. Vhal Mikael feared, the analysis revealed that, due to some, medically judged, unknown reason, the molecular structure of the cells was brittle and unstable, nearly gradually deteriorating and incapable of regeneration as per natural biological process. Thus Roisin appeared to be prematurely aging at molecular level and, soon, unless the natural biochemical process was reestablished, she would supposedly and probably perish. Such was the fear and terror Shannon experienced that day that, for a moment, she worried it was divine punishment. Yet she was prepared to witness her daughter's death, blaming both parents for bringing God's Wrath, when the farsighted, as well as intuitive, scientific mind of Dr. Vhal save little Roisin's life.
Barely 28, an out-of-country graduate who returned to his homeland in an effort to help his small hometown, Mikael was the complete opposite of Shannon. A fierce believer in the yet unknown potential of the sciences, strongly refusing the absolutism of the impossible and open to all potential theories and hypotheses, he was neither a genius nor a phenomenon, but a determined and highly motivated young man who was eager to discover what the sciences had to offer. And in Roisin he saw not only a sweet, smiling child, but a possible development of humankind as well as a potential prize-worthy discovery.
Thus, when he was permitted to visit her, and when then, after her hospitalization, he succeeded in persuading the Quinns to entrust her under his care, among examinations and experiments, Dr. Vahl found that Roisin's abilities could be lethal if overused, but they did not limit themselves to repairing damaged limbs or growing new ones, but rather they extended to entire alterations of cellular structures and bio-organic modifications in molecules. Therefore, over the months, it became clear to Mikael that the child wasn't a miracle of God, but an evolution of the species. And, although his ideas and declarations contrasted with Shannon's beliefs, seeing her daughter improve and return to a healthy and happy state, made her gratitude to the man and their connection of mere acquaintance slowly grew into something more intimate. Eventually culminating in the hasty, but unobstructed, marriage. Not long before Roisin's fifth birthday, Dr. Vhal officially became her father, and life, despite her grandparents' still-pressing desire to divulge divine love through paid miracles and her parents' wish to further explore the extent of her special abilities, proceeded quietly and steadily for another year. Till something changed it all, forever.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On Christmas Eve of December 1994, with fireplaces blazing and roofs blanketed in snow, at dinnertime, a resounding thud shattered the Quinns' and Vhal's lives. In a dazzling blue glow someone magically appeared beside the Christmas tree, but brought neither gifts nor joy. With Santa's crimson hat atop the mane of a white plastic unicorn head, the wizard carried silver bullets for each present. A gift lodged in the skulls. A horrific gift that killed Shannon last, with arms still reaching out to protect her beloved child. Crying and frightened Roisin fell, seeking what she had always been trained to do: bring a miracle. For herself, this time. The unicorn-masked man's glassy eyes stared at her with the gun aimed and another, final, gift of silver bullet was already engraved with her name upon it as another bluish light, like divine providence, enveloped the room in an aurora of fear at the echo of a fired shot and a corpse falling onto the carpet.
«Dear…calm, shh, it's alright now.»
She thought it was an angelic voice of unknown words, the one Roisin heard, with eyes tightened and hands trembling.
«Quiet, darling, I won't harm you…you can trust.»
Sounding angelic, melodious and gentle, it radiated warmth the hand that brushed her hair and, with courage of despair, she opened her eyes to find a woman's face smiling tenderly at her. As an angel indeed, she thought observing that outstretched palm before her eyes.
«Du er i sikkerhed nu. Jeg vil beskytte dig mod alle onde mænd som ham,»
Protect her from evil men, like the one lying on the ground, the unicorn mask mane smeared with blood in a crimson puddle,
«Det lover jeg dig, min skat. Du vil være i sikkerhed hos mig for evigt, min lille skat»
And Roisin did trust her. For what else was left to her but this angel promising her protection? It was a natural instinct, to grasp that gloved hand and be guided by it. Even without understanding why she was left alone in the world. Even without being able to reason why bad men wanted to hurt her. Instinct spoke to Roisin and told her that the woman was the angelic guidance sent from God. And she trusted, blindly. She trusted so easily, for so long. She had to grow timeless, to unveil the deception that the angel was nothing else than a demon in disguise.

[ID: a comic set in the au where Five takes the place of Lemony Snicket in All The Wrong Questions; in which he is an 13 year old apprentice in a secret society. The art imitates the style of the books series; a cartoony art style with only three colors: black, white, and blue.
Panel 1: The caption reads "The Station, 10am." Five is sitting at a train platform reading a newspaper, a suitcase by his side.
Panel 2: The Handler, Five's new mentor, appears in front of him. "Ready to go, Five?" she says.
Panel 3: Five looks skeptical. "Go?" he says.
Panel 4: "My mission has me stationed in a little town near the coast," says the Handler, smiling.
Panel 5: "Didn't you read the briefing?" she says, offscreen. This panel has a view of the inside of Five's newspaper. The Handler's file is paperclipped to it, and contrary to her words, she is listed as being based in the city.
Panel 6: She continues, "You didn't think you'd have time to run around the city, did you?" Five looks away, face tight.
Panel 7: A wide shot of the station, as Five and the Handler walk away. "What a shame," the Handler says. Five trudges behind her.
A black bar showing a blurry train between panels, indicating the passage of time.
Panel 8: The same shot of the station, with a caption that reads "Later". A girl in a wheelchair approaches Five's abandoned newspaper and briefcase.
Panels 9 and 10: The girl, Delores, looks around, asking "Five?" She was meant to meet him here.
Panels 11 and 12: She reaches down and picks up the newspaper, and reads the note Five left for her: "Cancelled. Unforeseen circumstances. Don't go alone."
Panel 13: Delores looks unimpressed, and pulls on a pair of gloves. "He worries too much," she says.
The comic is titled "What Were The Plans That He Cancelled?" /End ID.]
I tried out making a comic for this au! in which five is about to be dragged to a small town against his will to meet the rest of the cast hahaha

“All this killing…I’m done with it.”
“What?”
“What I did today, I did for my family. I did it to save the world.”
“Please.”
Once again, Five is expressing the fact that he doesn’t kill just because, and once again the Handler is dismissing that and insisting he’s a killer. She keeps trying to get in his head and poke at his doubts that maybe he doesn’t belong anywhere but at the commission. He doesn’t want to be a killer but he’s only useful to her if he is. So she consistently insists that all he’ll ever be is a murderer and that he must enjoy it.
