Hello hello everyone!
I'm glad to be back and feeling a little more refreshed this week! Hopefully everyone has been able to take a moment in their garden or farm or homestead efforts! :)
To start off some of my hollyhocks bloomed!
Tumblr media
Sadly, this was the only one that was bright and bold so far :/ and it's less than a foot tall 😆 so long as the seeds mature ill be happy though :) I would love to have more of these beautiful flowers growing tall and luscious for allt he pollinators of the area 😍
I pulled the Nasturtium. Sadly they reached the end of their life cycle faster than I expected. I will absolutly be growing them again! I also got a ton of seed which I am stoked about!
Tumblr media
I replanted this area with rainbow chard and kale seed. There is as well still nasturtium seed in the bed as i got kinda lazy towards the end of clean up. As their growing this time I plan on plucking the plants and using them all for cooking this time round, even if just for egg dishes and salads. (At worst my chickens will love the extra greens!)
A few of the armeninan cucumbers I planted have finally started taking off! I cannot wait for those tasty cukes!!
Tumblr media
I believe the lentil grow experiment has just about concluded now. I've seen small flowers for a couple weeks but nothing more than that. For now I'm leaving them in to give ground cover on the soil.
Tumblr media
The flowers are super cute, but I haven't seen too many pollinators for them. So I don't really know if I'll get any fruit.
An onion update~ I accidently lopped the flower head off one of these guys while trying to remove the carrots that got trashed in the last wind storm.
Tumblr media
I think next time I do this grow experiment with onions, will be fall/winter. Around the time I planted them was a lot of temperature fluctuation so they went straight to flower and not bulbing like I had hoped.
Tumblr media
we have some ears! During all the wind storms these poor guys got pretty beat up. While I wasn't too impressed with the germination of this variety I do have to admit they have been incredibly hardy! If the ear growth isn't too bad I think I shall be giving them another try in a different area next grow cycle.
To those who desire to grow mint, a small warning
Tumblr media
It is invasive! Once established mint is incredibly invasive. I have seen it take over entire yards, even in 9b-10a areas under okay ish conditions.
To be honest I'm not sure this one actually came from a runner though (a type of root some plants have to spread themselves) or if it was seeded in. as the mint has seeded several times and there are some varities of finches in the area that eat them on occasion. Either way I pulled it. While I don't mind the mint in the herb or floral part of my grow space I do not want it in the vegetable area. Far to easy to lose under big plants and become a problem.
Speaking of big plants!
Tumblr media
That pumpkin sprout has grown into a pumpkin forest! I eagerly await the pumpkins 🎃
That's it for today's update :)
🌱💐Happy Gardening! 💐🌱

Sabbats: Lughnasadh Basics and Correspondences
Lughnasadh is one of the four Celtic Cross Quarter Festivals, also referred to as the fire festivals. It is the first of three harvest festivals held in the fall. As the grain and corn are gathered and preserved for the season, farmers celebrated the last of the long and warm days of summer.
The cross quarters are linked to an old farming calendar. This was a time when people were very close to the land and their lives were governed by the changing of the seasons and the need to grow enough food to survive. Modern Irish Gaelic calls the month of August Lúnasa which is the modern variation of Lughnasadh. The name originates from Lugh, a mythological hero to some, sun god to others.
NAMES: The festival was adopted as Lammas “loaf mass” during the conversion of old ways to Judeo-Christian ways. Lammas (Anglo-Saxon – “hlaf-mass” = “loaf-mas”), Lughnasadh (Irish-Gaelic), First Fruits Harvest, Festival of Wheat Harvest, Cornucopia, Thingtide, The Feast of Bread, Freyfaxi, Frey Fest

Character Intro: Kéfi (Kingdom of Ichor)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nicknames- Mommy by her daughter
Age- 35 (immortal)
Location- Queenstown district, New Olympus
Personality- A bit irresponsible (especially with money) and klutzy (her 5 inch heels make her trip often), she's also funny, sexy, insightful, accepting, & positive. She's never judgemental and always seems to find a way laughing through life's adventures. She's recently engaged.
As the goddess of mirth she has the standard abilities of a goddess, except shapeshifting. Her other abilities include being able to induce a false sense of joy in someone temporarily, causing people around her to become more jubilant and joyful, & cosmetic manipulation.
Kéfi currently resides in a recently purchased mansion with her fiance in the Queenstown neighborhood of New Olympus. Currently living out of boxes, the only things that has been unpacked is her bed and closet. Before this, she had a bit of a nomadic lifestyle- hopping from rental condos & hotels.
As a minor goddess she doesn't have much stake into the affairs of the pantheon. Kéfi does however enjoy the social aspect of it- the exclusive A-list parties and the immediate respect she recieves from the general public being the mother to one of The Graces.
A go-to drink for her is a flirtini. She also likes cosmopolitans, martinis, & New Olympus Iced Teas! Her usuals from The Roasted Bean includes a medium vanilla hazlenut latte and a large pineapple-mango splash.
It's well known & gossiped about Kéfi's "addiction" to expensive footwear! She may even have the largest shoe collection in the pantheon. Peep toe, stilettos, platform, wedges, d'orsay- you name it and she'll find a way to buy them, even if it means maxed out credit cards! She frequents the mall & boutiques every week, not to mention shopping catalogues.
One of her favorite sweet treats is a peach compote dessert cup (added with mascarpone & crushed amaretti cookies). She'll also stop by Hollyhock's Bakery to enjoy some salted caramel-chocolate chip cookies.
Kéfi is the mother to Euphrosyne (grace of good cheer & joy). They're more like sisters than mother and daughter. They often go out shopping, cloud surfing, checking out a new eatery, or dancing the night away at the latest nightclub. Her daughter has been a major support system for her, wiping away her tears through every romantic disappointment. The mother/daughter duo also walked together at her daughter's fashion show during NOFW.
She's currently engaged to the Psionikós (god of the mind); Níkos for short. Kéfi's engagement ring is an exquisitely rare 13 carat vivid purpulish pink diamond accented with pink and white marquise cut diamonds. They both gave an exclusive look and news of their engagement to Modern Olympus magazine. No one really knows how they met or how their relationship started, but a mutually beneficial publicity stunt soon twisted into something dark, passionate, & real.
Kéfi's had former romantic relationships with the gods Priapus, Hydros, & Pan. She's also been in a few relationships with some mermen and mortal men.
In the pantheon, her BFFs are Dione & Panigýri. She was the one who came up with the idea to nickname themselves "The Mama Graces." She's also good friends with Eudaimonia (goddess of happiness), Pherusa (goddess of substance & farm estates), Hesperis (goddess of the evening & sunset), Pagoniá (goddess of ice), Enyo (goddess of war, destruction, bloodlust, & devastation), Neicus (god of debate & appeal), Dimósia (goddess of debate), Záchari (god of confectionery), Lyrikós (Titaness of voice and song), Gymnasia (goddess of excercise & gymnastics), Sardo (one of The Nesoi), Matikós (god of performance), Karme (demi-goddess of the harvest), Elais (goddess of oil), Sponde (goddess of libations), Rhapso (goddess of sewing), Felis (Titaness of cats), Livádi (goddess of meadows), Orthosia (goddess of wealth), Charis (goddess of charm), Karmanor (demi-god of the harvest), Litismós (goddess of culture); future sister-in-law, Evimería (goddess of prosperity), Hybris (goddess of insolence, hubris, & reckless pride), and the model Pandora. Kéfi hasn't really had the opportunity to get to know her future brother-in-law Isorropía (god of duality, balance, & equilibrium).
For income (and heavily discounted products!), Kéfi models for & endorses atelier fantaisie, Luxuria, No. 3 & Co., Diamond Ave., Phaelam, La Petit Amour, Olive Visibly, Anthisméni Raptikí, Paloma, Megaleio, and Euryphaessa, just to name a few.
Her fiance gifted her with the most expensive pair of shoes from Diamond Ave. for her birthday, but she hasn't worn them outside yet. After a walkthrough in her house, Kéfi has kept it stored away in a safe located in her closet.
Aside from her shoes, which she affectionately calls her "babies", Kéfi has also enjoyed collecting jeweled clutches from Diamond Ave. Her favorite so far has been the popcorn shaped clutch! Euphrosyne gifted her the cosmopolitan shaped clutch!
Her favorite frozen treat is Cocktails on Ice's peach white zinfandel ice cream!
She's had more than a few thoughts to start up her own designer shoe brand.
One of her greatest hopes is for "The Real Goddesses of New Olympus" to finally get greenlit!
Kéfi has been a mostly quiet supporter of the MGM movement. She finally made her opinions on the minor god movement loud & aware when she graced the cover of Diaireménoi Stekómaste covered in body paint (in the colors of the MGM movement with the letters being painted on her stomach) wearing high heels of course!
Her all time favorite meal is osso buco with saffron risotto. Kéfi also enjoys Níkos' cooking when he makes oysters, cucumber & onion salad, spanokopita, and arroz con gandules during their date night indoors.
In her free time, she also enjoys shopping, tanning, clubbing, swimming, yachting, going on double dates with her friends and their significant others, tennis, & painting.
"Good shoes take you to good places!"

We are in the business of life! Our 2023 seed production in Ojai, California.
Tumblr media
Spring never really got going here in Ojai, and as I write these words summer is nearly here. Between the heavier winter rains (this a 45 inch - and counting - rain year) and weeks of overcast days, moon cycles have been an afterthought.
Tumblr media
The plants keep growing through the fog, rain, and cloudy weather. Kendall harvested our Fizz Kale plants two weeks ago, making this our first seed crop of the year. Fizz is a salad kale, with smooth, oak shaped emerald colored leaves and white veins. It was the very first lot of seed we logged for the company back in 2011, and was definitely in need of improvement. We focused on one thing: culling out early bolting plants, prolonging the usefulness and flavor of the leaves as they mature. (Given this kale is harvested young as a micro green, it’s unsurprising this might have been not a priority, as harvest would typically occur long before any chance of flowering occurs)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Up next is our largest production of Cherry Glow Breadseed Poppy. We did smaller runs of these in 2017 (me) and 2022 (Richard Gambino/Topa Vista Farmstand). The last few of Richard’s packets are still available, along with a bulk size.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(We also have a new variety we are adding: Flemish Peony Poppy. I first spotted this on Cacia Huff’s Feral Farm instagram feed, and she sent me some seed stock)
We planted 10 pounds of Chimyan Garlic last fall, and harvesting was completed earlier in the month. Hardnecks aren’t always suitable for Southern California climates, but these bulbs look promising, and a quality planting stock would allow us to make this available to our customers in 2024.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
New crops of Double White Hollyhock and Krishna Holy Basil are currently in the ground. Krishna seems to be the most temperature sensitive of the holy basils I’ve ever worked with. It really didn’t like this cold, and needs a really long production window for harvest. When it gets established, it’s a sight to be soon. Rama Holy Basil seedlings are also ready to go in, Heavy Hitter Okra seedlings are at the nursery, and I think our first Ojai production of Zanadoo Corn is on the way as well. Another round of Hibiscus was necessary, as we are packing the last of our current seed supply today, and it will likely be gone before the summer is up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
New crops of Silk Mullein, Dense Flowered Mullein, Clary Sage, and Marshmallow are well on their way to producing. Stinging Nettle and Scarlet Bee Balm will likely just increase our planting stock and not be available for sale this year.
Tumblr media
After adding Double Black Hollyhock and Madder to the catalog in this past year, and feeling a little inspired by the work of Ride and Dye Ojai, I’ve been wanting to further expand the availability of our dye plants: Japanese Indigo (Persicaria tinctoria) seemed like an easy place to start and is now in production. I also had two other proper Indigo species “True” Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria) - or Guatemalan Indigo (Indigofera suffruticosa) we sent to the nursery, but the germination was too scanty to move forward. Next year!
Tumblr media
Steve put a lot of flowers in the ground in this past fall-winter so it’s possible that a lot more will be coming than planned, or just refreshing/replenishing existing stalks. I’m pretty happy to see a new crop of Gaillardia coming on. I’m spying some mixed yarrow and bachelor buttons and a lot of silvery rose strawflower.
I’m continuing to work with my Southern California natives / rugged perennial crops. I planted a lot more Western Vervain this year, and new crops of Black, Purple, and White Sages are nearly ready. I continue to have problems with harvesting quality Hummingbird Sage seed, but after taking a year to experiment with harvesting and timing methods, I’ll give it another go. This is the first year I’ve worked with Cleveland Sage, and it’s looking spectacular.
Tumblr media
Elderberry and Matilija Poppy will likely be back in the catalog too. These are quite easy to propagate clonally (root divisions or just straight up branch plantings), but it seems people enjoy the challenge of starting things from seed.
Tumblr media
Our network of producers has grown substantially over this past year, and we intend on highlighting their crop production for the company in another blog post later in the year!

Got a few more seeds delivered today. 2 different hollyhock packs, four different tomato type seeds, 2 basil, and 2 different Sunflowers.
Turns out Sunflowers are excellent for recovering soil health and removing metals and toxicity from the dirt.
I'm going to plant a bunch this year in my front yard to prep for a veggie garden for next year.
The wildflowers are for pollination and soil health as well.

Join me as I dip dye a merino wool shirt with dyer's chamomile and black hollyhock to create a beautiful ombre effect. Inspired by the summer flowers at The Color Farm, I continue the 21 Day Wardrobe Challenge with Wool& by adding another layer of natural color to this soft garment. This tutorial will introduce you to the cozy wool shirts of Wool& to show you how to add your own unique color flare with a dip dye technique overlaying two natural dyes on a wool top. You will see my ombre dye results for inspiration to embrace slow fashion in a colorful way.

My name is Morgan. This is a public headspace for plural system headmates who want to come hang out on my farm and have a picnic in a field together. Bring cute food and a willingness to calmly and gently talk through any worries others may have. It's a beautiful day in mid-May; the perfect balance of blossom to hayfever, and we've got all the time we need to talk!
The cloth is your traditional white with red checker pattern. There's a rectangular wicker basket full of fresh pies, tarts, jam sandwiches, buttercream fairy cakes, large sponge cakes, shortbread biscuits, pots of honey, punch, lemonade, and sparkling water. The blanket is big enough to be half in the sun and half in the shade of a tree with low, wide arborage, if you want to sit in or climb it, or there's another tree close by where you can use the rope swing I've made.
Grazing horses out to pasture form a timeless backdrop. Free range fowl waggle their tails. There's a tall red barn against which haybales have been stacked, and my newest foal ambles out, newborn days ago. I can't wait to see if her behaviour takes anything after her parents! Bees and peacock butterflies visit from hyacinth to hollyhock.
