In Victorian England, the uncle of orphaned niece Flora and nephew Miles hires Miss Giddens as governess to raise the children at his estate with total independence and authority. Soon after her arrival, Miss Giddens comes to believe that the spirits of the former governess Miss Jessel and valet Peter Quint are possessing the children. Miss Giddens decides to help the children to face and exorcise the spirits.

What shall I say when he knocks on my door? What shall I say when his feet enter softly? Leaving the marks of his grave on my floor. Enter my lord. Come from your prison. Come from your grave, for the moon is a risen. Welcome, my lord. The Innocents (1961) dir. Jack Clayton

We lay my love and I beneath the weeping willow. But now alone I lie and weep beside the tree. Singing 'Oh willow waly' by the tree that weeps with me. Singing 'Oh willow waly' till my lover return to me. We lay my love and I beneath the weeping willow. A broken heart have I. Oh willow I die, oh willow I die.

THE INNOCENTS (1961) Oh, miss, are you afraid he'll corrupt you?
Miss Giddens + white roses The motif of innocence (real or a façade) is particularly prominent with the use of white roses. They appear both in and outside of the house and mostly with regards to Miss Giddens. Upon her arrival to Bly, she walks through them and inside the house, she disrupts a display with her touch. Another scene we see her cutting the flowers (to later arrange them) and then the fall of a single petal on her Bible towards the end of the film. She wears them once and is often framed with the roses in shots, either behind or in front of her. After the final altercation with Flora, there are no more white roses to be seen, perhaps symbolic of the loss of innocence - hers, the children's or the pretence of it, is open to interpretation.
