The New Sounds (6/20)
Tumblr media
Hi, guys. How’s everything? Weird times. Hope you and your people are all healthy and happy (enough).
When I started these New Sounds playlists back in January, the concept was a compilation of the best songs of each month – I actually checked release dates for every track in January and February. Then COVID happened (or the clampdown happened, anyway – the virus had been spreading among us for a while), and WFH happened. And I had more time to listen to music.
There was alot of classical that I always wanted to hear. And now I have – all the symphonies by Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Mahler, and almost half of them by Shostakovich, as well as a few by Bruckner and Schubert. Sibelius is next. There was alot of jazz that I always wanted to hear. And now I have – all of the pre-Columbia Records stuff by Miles Davis, most of the pre-Atlantic Records stuff by John Coltrane, and most of the Jazz Messengers catalog. OM and I are now doing a deep, chronological dive into Miles’ fusion-era studio material. (Blogpost/playlist coming eventually.)
I also kept up with fresh stuff, and that included revisiting records from earlier in the year to which I hadn’t given sufficient attention. Accordingly, the playlist concept changed. Now, it’s more like a compilation of the best new-ish songs that I heard during the month, even if they were released in a different month. Example: Kiwi jr.’s Football Money dropped in January, but I circled back to it last week, and a funny little track ended up on the June ‘list. The upshot is that a less strict rule had led to more tracks. Still, all killer, no filler.
The New Sounds for June: Jenny Lin (Philip Glass composition), Zola Jesus (Black Sabbath cover), TORRES, Phoebe Bridgers, HAIM, Margaret Glaspy, Dream Wife, Alex the Astronaut, Waxahatchee, GIRL SKIN, Trace Mountains, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Kiwi jr., 2nd Grade, Hotel Lux, Twin Peaks, Max Bloom, Porridge Radio, Fenne Lily, Hazel English, Peggy Sue, Honey Lung, Disq, Kestrels & J Mascis, Gum Country, Bryde, Why Bonnie, Momma, New Pagans (!!), Francesca Blanchard, Ellis, Liela Moss, Car Seat Headrest, Hinds, Melenas, Public Practice, Lithics, Retirement Party, No Age, Bob Mould, Dogleg, Charmer, Fire in the Radio, Cafe Racer, The Wants, The Cool Greenhouse, Fontaines D.C., Nat Vazer, Sorry, Tia Gostelow, Cathedral Bells, Ball Park Music, Nation of Language, I Break Horses, Hatchie & The Pains of Being Pure at Heart (Jesus and Mary Chain cover), A.O. Gerber, Jordana, The Fiery Furnaces, U.S. Girls, Methyl Ethel, Kate NV, Dua Lipa, Foxes, Charli XCX, Lily Konigsberg, Blanche, Sia, Michael Stipe & Big Red Machine, Fiona Apple, Meek Mill, Public Enemy, Saweetie, Noname, Tricky, Yaeji, Rival Consoles, Kelly Lee Owens, Caribou (Four Tet remix), The 1975, The Soft Pink Truth, Gia Margaret, Rosie Carney (Broken Social Scene cover), Mid-Air Thief (thanks, GB), and Inventions. And more.

May 1, 2020
The war is upon us, with the combine opening this week. There is optimism in the air in Syria, as Squadron 69 are coming off the high of killing, like, a bunch of ISIS soldiers last year. But what if the war doesn't start for the squadron?  Before you guys call me crazy, insane, asshole, jerk, or even waste of human flesh, hear me out. There are many scenarios that could delay the start of the war, or even cancel it  outright. These are those scenarios:
Tyler Seguin locks the base and loses the keys
Imagine, Tyler brings in all his gold chains to show off to Maria, and then he's all like, "JESUS, these are worth a lot eh Maria? I better lock the room so no one comes in a steals them." And then Tyler and Maria go to a bar and get hamboned and when Tyler goes to leave the bar, he takes a straight header down a flight of stairs and the keys slide into a manhole. "OMG ARE YOU OKAY GUY?", screams Maria. But Maria knew Tyler wouldn't answer because of the amount of blood. When the squadron show up for the war, they can't get into the base. "I guess that's it boys. Time to pack her up. Try again next season", says Gabe Landeskog. Also, Tyler has severe amnesia and thinks he's in Tampa and he kills Barack Obama.
Sand Storm 2020 hits the base
Imagine, the bus pulls up at the base on the first day of war. Sydney D’Amico walks off, looks at her surroundings and takes a deep breath. "It's finally here! The beginning of my illustrious career!", says Sydney. Suddenly, Mark Stone screams, "JESUS, MARY, AND JOSEPH!" Over the horizon, a wave of sand is descending on the base. It must have been 100 feet tall. All the soldiers take off running to save their own lives. But it is too late, The Hoff is sucked into the sand oblivion and then a bunch of locusts attack poor little Timothée Chalamet. Little Timothée isn't even part of the squadron yet and he screams, "OH SWEET IRONY OF JUSTICE." The sand hangs over the base for 40 days and 40 nights. And then The Mummy comes. And then Tom Cruise comes to fight the Mummy. And then The Hoff is found alive in the City of Athens. But he is going by the name of Bruce, and he changed his identity in order to get away from the pressures of war. Not only is the war canceled, but the entire world is CANCELED
Marky Mark isn't ready to start the war, so they cancel the war
Imagine, first day of the war. The soldiers are dressed in the base and Tyler walks in to give his pre-war speech. "Okay guys, number 1 rule: give the kill to Marky Mark. If you don't have the kill, get the kill, AND FUCKING GIVE IT TO MARK. And if Marky Mark has the kill, GET THE FUCK OUT OF HIS WAY. THE END" screams Tyler. "But Tyler, Marky Mark is still hurt. He's not even here!" says Sydney. Out of nowhere, that crazy loud music from Kill Bill starts blaring, and Tyler grabs Taylor Davenport and brings him down through the glass table, Gatorade flying everywhere. The cops have to tear gas the entire room and all the soldiers are traumatized physically, and emotionally. War is canceled. Tyler arrested. Marky Mark still injured.
The boys eat a spoiled batch of Jos Louis
"Hey everyone, as an appreciation for all the hard work you put into camp, here's 2 Jos Louis EACH!! Let's have a great season boys!!", said Marky Mark. The room was so silent because everyone was enjoying their delicious sponge cakes. All of a sudden, Marky Mark yells, "OH GOD DON'T EAT THOSE!  OH MY GOD I GAVE YOU THE WRONG ONES. THOSE ARE THE ONES I FOUND IN FIELDS OF MY UNCLE'S FARM. THOSE ARE.....COW SHITS", screams Marky Mark. Everyone starts puking and the screams were so loud that it awoke Obama from his home in the US. He sits up in his bed just sweating. His wife is like, "Barack! You had a bad dream. It's okay go back to sleep." But Obama starts sobbing, "I know something is wrong with Squadron 69 I can just feel it. I can feel their pain. They're calling out to me. I have to save them Michelle", says Obama. He hops onto the next flight to Syria and finds out that each single soldier ate a piece of cow poop mistaking for a delicious Jos Louis. War canceled

Live Shows to Check Out in New York this Weekend (October 12-14, 2018)
Tumblr media
The New York music scene is home to hundreds of live shows every night. From big arena shows with nationally touring artists to the small clubs harboring tomorrow’s next big thing, there is a wealth of music being shared and enjoyed on every level. With the weekend almost here, this is a great time to check out what the New York music scene has to offer.
There is a lot going on in New York this weekend when it comes to huge shows. Gorillaz, Maroon 5, Mike Shinoda, Death Cab For Cutie and Nine Inch Nails’ tours are all converging on the city this weekend. Fans of the 1960s sound have Frankie Valli to look forward to. Phil Collins will be playing all the hits during his book tour/arena tour. You also have shows from indie and “emo” bands like Mew, Indigo Girls, The Early November and The Dangerous Summer. And that’s just the beginning.
Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, loves live music. That’s why we’ve collected a list of some of the hottest shows happening in the New York area this weekend. Here are nine shows we know will be worth checking out.
1.       The Early November & The Dangerous Summer: A pop-punk double-header! Late 1990s/early 2000s bands The Early November and The Dangerous Summer join forces for a US tour this fall. Both bands have new albums either coming soon (Early November) or out now (Dangerous Summer), with The Early November also celebrating the 15th anniversary of their breakthrough album ‘The Room’s Too Cold.’ The Jetty Bones and Save Face open the show. (Friday, Brooklyn Bazaar)
2.       Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons: Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons are legends of the New Jersey and New York music scenes and they have the long-running Broadway show to prove it. Catch the real deal tonight as Valli and the boys play their first show at Radio City in nearly three decades. (Friday, Radio City Music Hall)
3.       Death Cab For Cutie: Indie / “emo” rockers Death Cab For Cutie released their ninth studio album this past August, which produced the number one single “Gold Rush.” Feel all the feels when the band plays two sold out shows in Brooklyn this weekend with Charly Bliss opening. (Friday & Saturday, Kings Theatre)
4.       Gorillaz: Having released two albums in the span of a little over a year, cartoon rockers Gorillaz have been busy. The band is currently wrapping up their tour behind ‘The Now Now.’ No word on if Murdoc will be resuming his bass duties now that he’s escaped prison. (Saturday, Barclays Center)
5.       Mike Shinoda: It’s been a crazy yet prolific year for Linkin Park guitarist / rapper Mike Shinoda. In the wake of bandmate Chester Bennington’s death, Shinoda has written and released an amazing rap album, ‘Post Traumatic,’ which goes beyond just dealing with grief. Shinoda heads to New York this weekend for a rooftop show at the pier. (Saturday, The Rooftop at Pier 17)
6.       Nine Inch Nails: Nine Inch Nails kicked off their ‘Cold and Black and Infinite’ tour last month following the release of ‘Bad Witch,’ the third part of their recent trilogy of EPs, in June. After reading reports from earlier dates, it looks like the band has some surprises up their sleeve for lucky concertgoers. The recently reunited Jesus and Mary Chain will be opening. (Saturday & Sunday, Radio City Music Hall; Tuesday & Wednesday, Kings Theatre)
7.       Phil Collins: Having had a prosperous career as both drummer / frontman for Genesis and as a solo artist, Phil Collins released his autobiography, ‘Not Dead Yet,’ in 2016. Instead of the traditional book tour, Collins has decided to embark on an arena tour to support it. The North American leg of the ‘Not Dead Yet’ tour started earlier this month and hits the Tri-State area this weekend. (Saturday, Prudential Center; Sunday, Barclays Center)
8.       Mew: Indie rockers Mew’s album ‘Frengers’ turns 15 this year. Along with the release of a 15th anniversary edition of the album, the band is celebrating by heading out on tour and playing the entire album front to back for the first time ever. Catch this special occasion when the tour hits Brooklyn this weekend. (Sunday, Brooklyn Steel)
9.       Maroon 5: Maroon 5 have become one of the biggest pop-rock bands in the world, with their latest single “Girls Like You” sitting atop the Hot 100 for three weeks now. The band brings their Red Pill Blues tour to New York for two shows this weekend with Julia Michaels as support. (Sunday & Monday, Madison Square Garden)
The New York music scene comes alive with amazing music every night and with this weekend’s stacked line-up, such a statement has never been more accurate. Check out one of the shows listed above or any of the smaller ones happening all over the area and let us know what shows you’re looking forward to in the comments below.

It’s Friday, I’m in love…
Hey, guys.
Last week, I posed a question about repeats on these playlists. The answer is yes, and many. Sorry.
Recently, I was compiling tracks for my big child’s bday playlist, and using these for material. I discovered that I’ve repeated a lot. Unintentionally, tbh. So I mentioned that I hit certain sources, right? The main ones are my Spotify Release Radar, Pitchfork’s Best New Music, and Drowned in Sound’s Independent Music Monday. When I find a good song, I’ll drop it onto more than one playlist. Or I’ll drop it on one, and then decide to drop it on another one. That’s usually while driving – yeah, not cool. But it’s easy to add, and not easy to delete. And I rarely go back and scan for doubles.
There are some tracks that would be obvious repeats. A new Broken Social Scene track? I’d pry catch that, if it showed up again. LCD Soundsystem? Sure. Something old and well-known? Yep. A bit farther down to totem pole? Bands I like, but don’t listen to much? Well, it gets harder to remember those. I might take a break from the weeklies and cull the repeats. Or I might not. I mean, radio stations do that all the time, ha. If Spotify’s search feature showed which of my playlists featured certain songs, I could figure it out p quick. Rn, that’s not an option. Again, sorry. I’d like to serve up 50 different tracks each week. There’s so much great music, and you deserve better than inadvertent recycling.
Anywhoo.
This week. Wow, that Emma Anderson is great. Her new record is half-great, but wholly sinister. New stuff: her, Angel Olsen, Ratboys (contender for a top five spot – such an outstanding record, front to back), Torres, Lo Tom, Kristin Kontrol, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart (also a great record), Goldfrapp, Blondes, Mount Kimbie, Burial (an OM fave), Bjork, Arcade Fire, Luna, Cut Copy, and the Jesus and Mary Chain with Sky Ferreira. Old stuff: SY, and a cool classic-rock-ish segment. Oh, and the song before YLT has become a new inside-joke thing with my best friend. She had lunch at Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago last week. And she really, really loves (hates) the blues.
Here’s your 51.
The header image is a crop of something from This Is Not Design (@tind on Ello). Thanks. Your work is fantastic.
