Q: Talking about darkness, what makes you fascinated by darkness?
A: I wouldn't say I'm fascinated by darkness, but I feel that darkness pulls me in, draws me in. Since I was a kid, I've been into horror comics a lot. I remember the first comic series my mom bought for me was called School Ghost Stories. I don't know if it's still available. It had about 12-13 volumes, I can't remember. It was a collection of short horror stories, somewhat similar to Junji Ito's works. It was something that always left a strong impression on me every time I read it. After finishing it, I would look for more horror stories to read, a lot of different ones.
My mom liked them too; she would buy them, and some were really terrifying (laughs). About witches or named "Survival," or something like that. So, I started getting into reading horror comics. Every time I went for karaoke, every Sunday, I would buy several comics and read them at home. Four volumes every Sunday.
Eventually, it became like I was addicted to the vibe of darkness. This complexity and profoundness it's within us without me being aware of it. Then it comes out in my musical works and performances all the time, without being aware. I feel like it's just me. It's something I consume, and then it becomes a part of me. (x)

My manga collection (October 2023)
I did a post detailing my manga collection back in 2021, but it's grown a lot since then so I figured I'd make a new post! It was also a good time to do so because we're repainting my room and while there's usually a ton of anime merch in front of the books on my shelves, now it's all been packed up. So there's a clear look at the books without me having to move anything, lol.
Anyway, without further adieu, here we go! My manga collection is largely shoujo (specifically magical girls) and horror manga.

The Junji Ito Horror Comic Collection, Volume 14

Can you recommend me one of your favorite books? The more fucked up, the better!
It depends on what you mean by fucked up… there’s books that are edgelord classics but not “good” in the critical sense. I just finished reading De Sade’s 120 Days of Sodom and it was the most fuvked book I ever read, yet I wouldn’t recommend it bc it’s nasty af, poorly written & infamous only for shock value.
The edition I own has this 1933 ass portrait in an upside down cross by Man Ray on the cover:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Andd during a Mexican airport security check the border guy pulled it out and asked me what it was and his face turned red bc he also saw I had lingerie in my bag lmaoo. That’s all this book was good for, making ppl think I was a weirdo 🙄
Tumblr media
For other odd books I actually enjoy; Bloody Ukiyo-e by: Suehiro Maruo is great bc it’s an artistic interpretation of 28 historical murders.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The best “sick psychopath” novels are imo American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis & The Killer Inside Me by Jim Thompson. These are books that wouldn’t be allowed to get published nowadays, and while I think they’re well-written, the misogyny is very gratuitous.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For something edgy yet a bit more girlboss, the 1940s BDSM lesbian dominatrix comic collection of The Adventures of Sweet Gwendoline by John Willie goes off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Laclos’ Dangerous Liaisons and Nabokov’s Lolita are written in beautiful prosaic style, but I find them disturbing bc the subject matter is so dark and about predatory figures who sexually manipulate others.
Tumblr media
Lastly I can never get enough of guro manga so I recommend anything by Junji Ito. So far I’ve read Tomie, Uzumaki, Gyo, Fragments of Horror and Dissolving Classroom and love them all 🖤

Your OC enters a massive bookstore. It is broken into genres and other book related items. Pick a section and tell us what they will get, if anything. -Comics/Graphic novels
MAN I wanted to answer this a week ago, but the good news is - I got a week to think about some very good answers :D
Nita: Would probably be into IDW Sonic (but I might be biased) and some of the better comics for younger audiences on the shelves. She'd go in for indie books, too - especially the ones with really great art that deal with the human experience. I ALSO think she has a thing for buying comics in Spanish as a more exciting way of keeping up with slang than just calling the fam or friends. I used to do this as an attempt to look cool and know what I was doing when speaking to friends in another language. Unlike me, Nita can actually pull it off.
Caj and Cherry: Caj is into DC and Cherry likes Marvel. They have intense debates. Though Cherry will concede that Batman is the shit and Caj really likes Venom.
Sparkles: The biggest comic fan of them all. I got it in my head some time this past year that Sparkles might actually be a really good visual artist. She'd appreciate comics in all their forms. Definitely has a sub to the new Gargoyles books and Battle Chasers. Again, I might be biased. But yeah, I think Sparkles would have a legendary collection of back-issues.
Eden: Got into Junji Ito at Toki's suggestion and never looked back. But outside of body horror stuff, also devours manga collections in general. She likes Inuyasha, Sailormoon, Dragon Ball, and all the classics (and there's just so much to catch up on, since she's basically been living in a cage her whole life). Also likes more contempoary things like Jojo, One Piece, and Demon Slayer.
Best. Question. Ever. :D

Digimon Survive headcanons - Miu as an adult
Tumblr media
An extension and elaboration of my first post on the Survive gang 15 years later.
Age: 26 Profession: mangaka, professional cosplayer
-Before making it big in the manga industry, Miu made ends meet during art school by working part-time at a local bookstore. She started out at the cash register, but in no time ended up being a storyteller in the children’s section. She knows many stories from Japanese folklore by heart, reciting them from memory dating back to her childhood. Her dramatic, often comedic enactments made her very popular with kids. Even after she became a mangaka and stopped working at the bookstore, she enjoys telling scary stories by the fire to her friends.
-Junji Ito and Kentaro Miura are her favorite mangakas and sources of inspiration for her own work. Her favorite Western authors are Edgar Allan Poe and Peter Straub.
-As a professional cosplayer, Miu is talented at making her own wigs in every conceivable color, shape, and form, though she keeps her own hair naturally dark and pixie-cut short.
-She gives significant discounts to her friends who request handmade Halloween costumes. One of her greatest achievements, in her opinion, is the scarily accurate Tusken Raider costume she made for Ryo.
-Due to their shared interest in comic book culture and frequent attendance at conventions, Miu sees Minoru the most. She regards him like a second older brother and they always have fun geeking out at cons together.
-Never forgetting the stalker that has haunted her memories since childhood, Miu took it upon herself to learn self-defense from Aoi.
-Above average height runs in the Shinonome family. After hitting her late-teen growth spurt, Miu is now the tallest girl in the group. As she had when she was eleven, she likes to wear comfortable, oversized clothing that hides her lanky build.
-Miu is a leftie and is very loud and proud about it. She has bought practically every product from the local store for lefties.
-When Miu racked up enough savings from her success as a mangaka, she went backpacking around the world to investigate spooky, interesting sites on her bucket list. If she had to pick just one favorite destination, it would be the Sedlec Ossuary in the Czech Republic: a church made of human bones. She steered clear, however, of the Aztec pyramids where human sacrifices were conducted. Hits too close to home, in her opinion.
-She wears gauze around her fingers from constantly pricking them by accident when she’s sewing her own costumes.
-Miu coming out as aro ace seized the attention of Japanese social media, and to the disappointment of some of her fans. Her friends were the first to know, of course, and had long known before the public announcement.
-She owns more books in the house than anyone in the Survive gang, even more than Shuuji with all his history tomes. She collects manga volumes and horror novels from her favorite authors, as well as an impressive stash of fashion and hair salon magazines she uses for reference and inspiration.
-During her free time, Miu likes to take Syakomon with her to the aquarium. On warmer days, they’d hit the beach. Chilling out in tide pools is Syakomon’s favorite pastime. Ironically enough, Miu often finds ideas for the darkest stories in clear, sunny skies while she lounges on the beach.
-Since meeting Syakomon, Miu has sworn off seafood and can’t bear the thought of eating clams or oysters. Just looking at them spread out on a plate makes her nauseated.

How to Find Great Manga to Read
Tumblr media
We’re in an awesome time for manga reading in the West. Physical manga volumes are flying off the shelves in a time when digital reading is becoming more prevalent. TikTok videos featuring manga collections have become a thing.  Anime’s now-uber mainstream popularity in geek culture has helped usher in this new golden age. Yet at the same time, a lot of mainstream manga attention is usually on shonen titles with hit anime adaptations - i.e. My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer, Chainsaw Man, Spy x Family, Jujutsu Kaisen, etc. There are outliners like Junji Ito material, but it can sometimes feel like the manga getting recognized by the Western media and comics critics are being highlighted a bit too much over titles full of wonderful stories that aren’t exactly “popular” in the public geek eye.
The manga world’s more than just action series that gets hearts pumping and horror gone viral. There’s many manga titles that not only provide escapism, but provide various perspectives that will make you feel you all kinds of emotions in ways that can make someone a better person. Plus, over time, your tastes and interests may expand and you might look for other manga titles that aren’t mainstream.
I recently read a guide on Psyche called “How to find great films to watch” and in the spirit of that guide (which was really good), I want to do something similar right here.
I will use the tips that the Psyche guide gives for finding great films and apply them for finding great manga. So here we go!
Tip #1 - Start with an open mind.
This sounds like the biggest deal-breaker because there are people who see manga and have many assumptions about it. Some will argue about reading it in a right-to-left format, some may argue about the sexual content that’s sometimes found in it and some will say that manga is only for teens (the biggest market in the West).
I will argue that manga is influenced from Western culture and comics and that some of the best comics in the entire world, past and present, are manga. Speaking of the past, there’s some older manga (titles like Banana Fish, Lone Wolf and Cub, Rose of Versailles, and Osamu Tezuka’s works come to mind) that hold up well today. The point is - don’t let preconceived notions get in the way of finding a manga that one day, might touch your heart in many ways.
Also, don’t be afraid of trying out other stuff that’s for teenagers (especially on the older teen side) because there are themes and topics that adults can relate to. Beastars is a great example of such a title as it explore societal hierarchies and divisions using anthropomorphic animals to represent human beings.
Tip #2 - Give manga a chance.
When you’re able to get a 1st volume of a manga, read it in a comfortable spot with good lighting. If it’s digital, definitely read on a tablet. Next, be sure to be patient with it. The first chapter of a series can be a bit rough. Hell, the 1st volume might suck and the story might turn out to be amazing a few volumes later. There will be cases where you will not be hooked right away. The best thing you can do is give a manga series maybe 2-3 volumes to see if this is the right thing for you to read. Every manga series of a decent length has some kind of introduction arc, so you can use this as a litmus test.
Tip #3 - Get some advice.
If you have friends who are bona-fide manga lovers, do not hesitate to talk to them. If you’re lucky to have a bookstore near you that sells manga, definitely ask them for advice on what to read. Manga librarians are also a great source of community on figuring out what manga to check out for those who want to check out libraries. The point is just be around manga connoisseurs as much as possible to get the most out of finding what’s great.
Also, manga publishers who show up at anime/comic book conventions are willing to help provide recommendations to fans who stop by their booths on what titles to check out. You will also get to meet other manga enthusiasts at conventions as well.
Tip #4 - Play to your strengths and interests.
If you have a favorite genre like shonen action manga, you can explore the history of shonen action manga titles out there. Viz’s Shonen Jump service has a wide category of older shonen action manga titles for fans who want to go beyond just the hit titles of today. If you’re interested in LGBTQ+ culture, you can explore titles like Boys Run the Riot, Our Dreams at Dusk: Shimanami Tasogare, and My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness that cover that perspective. Have a fascination with works from independent creators? Check out manga from publishers like Denpa Books, Star Fruit Books and Glacier Bay Books. Let’s say you’re into world history - titles like Vinland Saga and Golden Kamuy are right up your alley.
It is safe to say that whatever it is you’re into, there’s definitely a manga for it.
Tip #5 - Follow your likes.
Once you manage to find a particular favorite manga, you can decide to learn more about the title itself and the thought process of the mangaka. You can discover what influences drove the mangaka to create what they created. This may lead you to find out similar titles just like your favorite one. Here’s an example I can give - let’s say you’re a fan of Inio Asano’s works and notice that they’re influenced by societal problems regarding youth in Japanese culture. You can do no wrong by checking out works from the likes of authors such as Shuzo Oshimi and Kengo Hanazawa, who have written stories about Japanese youth trying to find themselves in modern society.
Tip #6 - Reflect on how manga is made.
When you read enough manga, you start to pick up on how things are done. There’s so many elements that come into the manga-making process as the manga Bakuman will tell you. There’s the draft process, the number of assistants helping out, the long hours spent drawing, the isolation, the editors checking in to make sure the mangaka doesn’t go wild, etc. You can also think about the story of the title you’re reading and its narrative structure. If there was a huge plot twist that happens, there’s sometimes foreshadowing hints found in earlier volumes. You can think about what the mangaka did in making sure their narrative went according to their liking and read up on fan discussions that point these details out.
The more you read manga, the more you start to appreciate the process of how it happens.
-------------------
I think that’s all I can say about how to find great manga for now. Unfortunately, what I covered here is only just a bit of the whole manga reading picture. If you want to expand your manga horizons further, here’s some books I recommend. These books are available on Amazon and wherever books are sold.
The Art of Osamu Tezuka: The God of Manga by Helen McCarthy
Manga: The Complete Guide by Jason Thompson

I cannot BELIEVE this is my first time posting. The toad has to emerge from lurking somewhere, right?
But Uhhhhhh hi! I’m Dust, and I will likely have zero consistency on what this blog will be posting. But to give off a non-exhaustive list, here we go:
- OCs/DnD characters (both in canon and in my silly AUs that I constantly daydream about)
- Anime figurine collecting
- Sometimes talking about some animes
- A whole lot (or little depending on my motivation) of drawings
- Aesthetic collages?? Whatever the kids call it these days
- Plushies.
- Any media style horror other then, like, movies (Mystery Flesh Pit National Park, Vita Carnis, Black Mirror, The Magnus Archives, Welcome Home, The Mandela Catalogs, anything Junji Ito, the list WILL go on so I’ll cap it here)
- I’m a fan of Milgram but I’m not very into the whole debating side of it- I just like the characters and the Minigram comics
- Once in a blue moon you may see some motivational and self care content with the whole pink pilates princess/wonyoungism vibes and aesthetic
Now for logistics:
I’m an adult, but I’ll only post SFW content. (Anything that’s horror NSFW will be tagged and or priv-ed) Anyone can interact but I’m not really the most active when it comes to replying and things like that.
If you’re reading this blog for some reason or another, I hope you have fun!!

may reading wrap-up ✨
this month i didn't read much, mostly because i was more caught up in other media, and also as a little break after last month's readathon. i didn't really do it on purpose, but i read almost only graphic novels / comics.
• the life and times of scrooge mcduck by don rosa — okay this was pretty silly, i read this because my brother found out that i never read it when we were little and he basically forced me to lol. it was quite funny though, so no complaints really. 3/5
• a man's skin by hubert — this was long overdue tbh, but so far i'd been lazy (i needed to get this from the library). i was really excited to finally read it and boy oh boy did it deliver. 5/5
• nel suolo, a collection of short stories by junji ito — (sorry for not listing an english title, but i couldn't figure out if there is a corresponding english edition of this specific collection). i've read other short stories by ito before, and as usual, there were some stories that didn't quite hit the mark for me in terms of horror, but it was still a nice and entertaining read. 3.5/5
• critical role's vox machina origins vol. 3 — i was eager to get to this since reading the previous two, but i wanted to wait for all the chapters of this volume to be out. like the previous ones, i enjoyed this immensely, and i can't wait for the next volume. 5/5
• oscar and the lady in pink by éric-emmanuel schmitt — this is very different from the rest of this list. it's a tiny book, but packs a lot of emotional heaviness. it's not an easy read but it is for sure a good one. 4/5

Revolvers #1 (of 4) - John Zuur Platten, Christian Dibari, & Simon Gough
Hampton Wales, a Detroit homicide detective, finds himself trapped in a mysterious and violent reality, only to find himself dead while attempting to solve a seemingly average and routine homicide. Confronted by an immortal tormenter known as La Piton (the Python), Hampton begins a dark and twisted quest to find out why and how he died. To do so, he must face off against a legion of gun-toting, deceased Revolvers within the Moratorium, a hellish version of Purgatory. Hampton will need to "kill or be killed" to have enough time to unravel his demise and discover it was by his own hand, someone else, or something more sinister.
