Bradley Scanes, Max's trainer during 2020-2023 seasons, did an interview with The Red Flags Podcast (22 Jan 2024)
I took one for the team and transcribed the bits I found interesting enough to share:
[12:40] Talking about the first times Brad met Max and how important it is that you click together well:
I think it's the most important. We had a good conversation in that time, I think the decision probably set on the fact that, for half of the time I was there, he was out driving the car. But I was there, talking to his dad, talking to his family. And really got on with Red Bull and really kinda fit into that mold and did for my whole 4 years with him and it was so nice. And I appreciate Max for this, his dad for this and the rest of the family because I felt part of the family the entire time which was really really nice and you know, we'll stay friends.
[24:00] From what I saw, I saw a guy that was elite. He knew where he wanted to go. You could see the drive, you could see the work ethic. The work ethic was tremendous. And for me it was just, I've gotta create the optimal space for him to be him and him to do him.
[27:30] Talking about flexibility and adaptability being the traits that separates greats from the rest:
He's on the grid being interviewed by two or three different tv stations, or something's happening with the car, he gets in the car and drives exactly the same no matter what's going on. And that's for me what I've seen from the kinda good to great.
[28:25] Was it hard to train him this year when he was so far ahead?
No, no. If anything he was more motivated this year than any year before.
[34:55] I feel like you have to be elite at falling asleep. Is Max like "allright time to go to bed" and he's like "okay [snores]"? Can kinda turn on turn off?
Yeah, he's really good at that.
[48:50] On staying motivated to win:
The mindset to keep winning is there. We love winning and it's what we get out of bed for, it's what we do our work for. We want to win no matter what it is. We going to Monza, going to Belgium, we wanna win that race. We want to win every single race and if the championship comes in the end the championship comes in the end. That's the mentality he has. […] The first one was motivated by winning the first championship, the second one was motivated by seeing off Ferrari and making sure we got the second (wdc) and that we're here to stay. And then the third one we were motivated by winning every single race and setting every single record that we could.
[1:14:55] Talking about other drivers posting tough work out videos while Max posted a lighter work out:
That's the thing actually, it's a conversation we've had before because we have the markers where we need to get to. How you get there doesn't really matter. We managed to do it in the most time efficient way, in the most enjoyable way for Max and how it doesn't impact on the other stuff as much. […] He doesn't like working out, everybody knows that. But when he's in the session he gets after it. It's just shifting that mindset, he might not want to do it ever again but there's not too much encouragement needed actually in session which is always nice. It's nice to work that way.
[1:16:10] If Max pisses you off what exercise are you doing to punish him? What's his least favorite?
Single-leg squats or planks.
[1:17:35] How long can Max plank for?
Decent amount of time. I don't actually remember but we must have hit like 4-5 minutes in pre-season test and a bit longer come summer break.

Spoilers for the NatM 'A Capital Adventure' book ig
Why is Octavius not apart of the Museum of Natural History exhibits??? He's not in the first scene with everyone being shipped out, he's not with the others when Larry sees the exhibits in the cargo crate (though I'm surprised as to how he even saw Octavius then), and then he just climbs into the crate to talk to Custer about getting elephants??? What is the canon for this book then?? Do the cowboys just have a bigger Diorama? Is there still a Rome Diorama? There has to be seeing as they just take him home but what??? Is this why Jed emphasizes on calling him a friend after Oct saved his life???
Oct also never mentions that he's small, like?? I'd feel like if you were a, over 5ft person, and you randomly became like 4 inches tall you'd have questions?? It's clear he n Jed haven't met before since Jed calls him feather hat and doesn't act the same towards him as he did the first movie.. Also, how does Octavius know Jed's name?? I don't think he's ever told it with what we see in text so he probably asked someone about it.. but Oct also never left the crate after Jed did?? But he at some point goes out and saves him then admits to not wanting to come back and fail Jed??? LIke... in this content, Octavius doesn't want to fail this other miniature that he met like less than an hour ago, in which he was called a name and basically brushed off??? He also says he'd swore to help but he didn't?? he only said that he was happy to help, not swearing he would.
So he basically just brought help from Abe Lincoln with no actual reason other than to save this random miniature cowboy that he technically didn't know was in danger and technically didn't know the name of. He also battled and tamed a squirrel for this guy..
Also.. the hourglass scene.
Octavius is panicked over Jed being buried in sand (which is honestly fair, whether you do know the person or not) and the scene is just shorter?? After Jed says he's basically done for, Octavius says- "no need for final words" and breaks him out.. Jed didn't interrupt him and say anything.. Then, Jed says- "Thank you, friend" after Oct helps him.. like.. where did that 50 years of fighting go here??
But then they just take him home?? does Octavius have his own Rome Diorama at the Smithsonian institution?? does he just not remember since he woke up in a archives?? where even was he if he was seen next to Amelia and Custer's horse?? how did they manage to leave a miniature out and away from his other miniature stuff? if that's not the cause, why would they just have a single Roman miniature??
Still, once they're back at the Museum of Natural History, Oct is in Larry's pocket and 'goes back to his place' not too long after.. I'm assuming he joins the other Roman miniatures in the Rome diorama but, how would they respond to gaining a random ass general?? did the Romans fight the westerns and how they have a General?? do they accept him, throw him out? like what.. I need answers.

Oh ya I’ve heard Türkiye is having some elections today, how’s that going? :D
it’s on sunday!!! ive spent the entirety of this morning crying over election coverage LOL. this is the single most important event of my life. yk how every politician says the next election is the most important one so everyone should go out n vote? thats the situation here but quite literally.
on one hand you have islamic extremists (erdoğan. one of the “parties” that support him is literally formed from an extremist cult. the only reason they haven’t all been put on trial is bc erdoğan supports them and he’s only got the extremists’ support left. and also bc years back he declared a nationwide state of emergency and quickly passed multiple laws in succession where. he’s no longer the prime minister but “the sole leader” of turkey. yeah)
and on the opposition there’s a coalition of 6 parties, literally all the major left parties with some nationalists, with their joint candidate kılıçdaroğlu. CHP (the main opposition party) has been center left lately, but its the actual fuckin party that first turned turkey into a republic from a sultanate. its huge. compared to US politics the average left wing party is actually pretty fuckin left here LOL. and they havent won the govt since 1950s (last peaceful n prospering decades of turkey) AND. THEY ACTUALLY STAND A CHANCE. all the polls point towards kılıçdaroğlu winning the elections
and you have no idea how bad it’s been here for the last few years. god. there’s so many shit thats wrong in the country because of the current government. civillians getting arrested for tweets criticizing erdogan, not being able to afford anything, being unable to pay your rent, erdogan (WITH HIS SINGULAR DECISION) withdrawing from the istanbul convention, the femicides being the highest it has ever been since the entire history of the turkey, murdered religious minorities and murdered journalists, tens of thousands of people left alone to die after the earthquakes back in february. its pretty fucking scary living here unless you’re a cishet sunni muslim man.
everyone i know that can afford it has been fleeing the country. sometimes it feels like thats the only option you have unless you want to get killed as a 20 something year old trying to make ends meet. i’m only 20 yo myself and the past 8 years has brought me and everyone under 30 to such a place where the only thing we feel about the future is hopelessness. i feel like ive aged 10 years in the last year alone and i bet anyone thats lived under a similar govt can relate. my countrys politics alone has been robbing me of my youth and my will to live.
AND. DESPITE ALL OF THAT. i have hope for the very first time. i have hope for a better future now bc of the opposition candidate and i have faith in him to deliver his promises. everything thats happened since january he’s been dealing with with grace, and him + mayors from his party actually do shit.
so yeah. the entire course of turkey is gonna change this sunday. if we were to lose this would be the last democratic elections held (the last elections held, period) before erdoğan fully converted the country into an autocracy, and when kılıçdaroğlu wins its gonna become a socialist state, as socialist as it’s ever been since the 1950s. pretty fuckin big stakes

Shining Force Data Collection - May 1992
These are from a special on japanese magazine Beep! Megadrive. I haven’t translated most of it because it’s your typical character stat analysis and item/magic list, but there were some fun character tidbits as well.

Special skills: He's the only one capable of ordering the wild members of the Shining Force to retreat.
Mae
Daughter of the Knight Captain, running through the wide fields

This model apprentice is a guy that grows stronger real fast

Do you think John Mitchell should have lived?
I think he gave himself the short end of the stick. :(
I might have to think and come back to this w a more detailed and less stream of consciousness response as I'm just off work and v tired but I do think that, while there could have been plenty of other outcomes, the most narratively satisfying and the Most Mitchell decision was the one he made in canon. And George being the self fulfilling prophecy of the wolf shaped bullet was done really well imo.
Mitchell spends all of his time in the show in this cycle of self destruction and addiction and hurting others without meaning to, and that guilt complex has to go somewhere, yknow? He knows that if he lives he's going to hurt them again and again, it's all he's ever done. His resolve just isn't strong enough one way or another. He abandons Herrick again and again, and he can't stay clean no matter how much his friends may try to help him. Maybe with time that he didnt see himself as having he could have properly gotten control of it, but thats only speculation. Not to mention, he seems to see it as a hopeless endeavor, and I don't exactly blame him, after he sees the man who got /him/ clean broke under pressure. The only truly moral decision in his eyes (and I won't even get into his catholic framework here) is to remove himself from the equation entirely. And then even in this decision he can't commit and makes George do it.
Not to mention his survivors guilt, however earned. Throughout the series it just gets worse and worse. As his kills mount despite his efforts, he's left to pick up the pieces, to either come clean or hide until he can't anymore and is forced to admit his wrongdoings. After he personally orchestrates Herrick's death, someone he used to consider a friend, you can see it fucks him up even if he doesnt want to admit it. After the bomb it only mounts, and then there's the box tunnel 20. He just sees his death as inevitable, as earned at this point.
While it is an extremely sad moment, I do also believe that had he lived, there would be another box tunnel 20, and another, and another, ("oh Jesus or a school" etc) and I think Mitchell knew that, too.
Tldr: do I think that he maybe sold himself short on his chances of getting better with a lot of time? Yes. But do I also think that he is fulfilling his pattern of self destruction to an extreme degree and and is enacting his belief that any bloodshed on the way to getting him there potentially decades later is not worth whatever theoretical life he could live on the other side of it? Also yes.
