Wk 3. Task 2: Literature (poems)
Thinking about concepts linked to the world, our relationship and impacts on it made me think of two poems, ‘lionheart’ by Amanda Chong and ‘City Planners’ by Margaret Atwood. They are very different.
section of ‘lionheart’ Amanda Chong     section of ‘City Planners’ M.Atwood
Tumblr media
    lionheart:
-about a merlion at the dawn of Singapore’s creation. Chong uses
imagery, ‘heart thumped’ and ‘your trees rise as skyscrapers’ and how Singapore is transformed from a jungle landscape to an urban one and romanticises the landscape.
It gives me ideas about perhaps animating the world as a living breathing thing and the ‘transforming’ of the landscape perhaps even moving from jungle to urbanisation to decay.
City Planners:
-includes themes around society, control ‘discouraged grass’ and the future. The descriptions suggest it’s impossible to keep it all pristine and immaculate and it is inevitable that things will fall apart, ‘future cracks’ and ‘houses, capsized, will slide obliquely into the clay seas, gradual as glaciers.’
The imagery links to climate change so maybe I could do something where things start sinking into the sea as it has become too heavy for the planet to support (a bit like the animated film posted earlier with the enormous crab supporting a whole city and eventually capsizing into the ocean The Legend of the Crabe Phare)

hey here’s a fun assignment for all of you
go on youtube and watch lots of short films. there are so many amazing shorts - both live action and animated - available for literally free. so much beautiful condensed emotional cinema. right there. just waiting for you to click ‘play.’
watch short films on youtube. appreciate what can be done with a camera or cgi, a few minutes, and an idea in the right hands.
cgmeetup, cgbros, and dust are good short film anthology channels to start with.
The Black Hole, Double King, The Albatross, Cream, The Origin of Creatures, Oh Sheep!, The Legend of The Crabe Phare, The Life of Death, and Jonah are a few favorites of mine.
it’s fun, it’s free, and it’s a way to get so enjoyably lost.

The Legend of Crabe Phare
The Legend of Crabe Phare is a French 3D animation short film telling a story about a lighthouse crab. The story revolves how the crab grew into size to the point that the crab has become a small island in itself. As the crab grew, so did the attraction to it’s lighthouse grew. The back of the crab itself was then built on a resort, attracting more humans to the lighthouse crab island.
Tumblr media
Form:
This 3D animation has an interesting beginning. It tells the story as if the Lighthouse Crab is a horrific creature, bound to destroy all ships who come near it. It uses closure to assume the deadliness of the creature and with it’s good narration and sound effects, we are driven to believe that the crab is evil. But then after that, the mood changes almost instantly. Apparently the beginning was made to create a humorous effect, giving off a calm and happy tone after the dark and horrific beginning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Content:
The story it self shows how the Lighthouse Crab is slowly gaining more and more attention because of it’s lighthouse. The people do not exactly care that much of the existence of a giant crab, but somewhat more interested in the existence of the lighthouse in the middle of the island. The crab then gets too overburdened by the buildings built on it’s back and collapses and gets reborn into a tiny little crab.
Tumblr media
Content:
There a lot more symbolism in this piece than one might first think. I did not understand a lot when I first watched it, but after doing some thinking, this simple story delivers a powerful message to us all. Using the friendly looking animation, we are able to receive such a dark message more easily. The story basically tells how the human race is so focused on the thinks that don’t matter and shrug off nature as something to be built upon. They then literally overburden nature (symbolized by the lighthouse crab) and then destroy it. But then when nature is destroyed, so is mankind’s buildings and creations. However in the end of the story, it is shown that, even though man kind's creation has destroyed it, nature would always find a way.
Tumblr media
Personally I find this animation very cute in all of it’s aspect. They are able to depict the fall of both man and nature, and yet they gave a rather positive resolution to the problem of overburdening nature.
