#the lineart could use some work hehe

Hey :) I've been looking at your blog and first off, wow. Second, you're really good at digital drawing and I'm trying to get better at digital drawing but I can never seem to get the lines straight or the colours even and in the lines. So if it's not too much trouble, could you maybe tell me what app you use or what brushes you prefer? I'm currently using ibisPaint X and I'm drawing with a sketchpad :) it would really help if you gave me some tips too! Thank you!! Also, you're really talented hehe
Hi there, I'm glad you like my art thank you so much! ; u ; <3 And sorry for the late reply, I wanted to write up a full response with some examples!
So for my artwork, I use almost exclusively Paint Tool SAI. I specifically use the original SAI atm, though I want to try using SAI 2 more (the brushes just feel... different. I've been using SAI for a decade now, so it's where I'm most comfortable.) SAI does cost money, but there are also free alternatives online as always. I'm not familiar with IbisPaint X, but I know that FireAlpaca and Krita are two good free options. I don't use a smart tablet or apps to draw, though, so I'm not sure what are the best options outside of PC.
As for brushes, I use three brushes for my lineart-- though 2 of them much more than the third. The first brush I use is my Marker brush. I've been using this brush to line my work for a very long time. It's thin and somewhat transparent (sometimes I copy-paste my lineart a couple of times to bulk out the transparency).
Tumblr media
The second brush I named TEST when I made it and I just never changed it, so it's my very permanent TEST brush. It's sort of similar to my marker brush (it even uses the SAI marker brush base), but it's thicker and a little more ragged. I tend to change up my style when I use this brush.
Tumblr media
The third brush I use for lines is not one of my "lining" brushes. It's a painting brush named GREGORY and I Mostly use it to paint backgrounds and details in fur. I change up the "blending" setting on it as needed. I usually only use this brush to line if I'm having artblock or am sketching around.
Tumblr media
As for keeping lines straight, I honestly just gotta say-- there's tricks to cheat the system! The first, easiest thing is you can find the "stabilizer" setting on your art program, slide that bad boy up, and have some assistance with keeping your strokes smoother.
The second thing you can do is... not really "line" your artwork. I tend to fight with lineart a lot. Sometimes it's not so bad (especially with my TEST brush), but a lot of the time I just line something and hate the end result, if I can even push myself to finish it. So, instead of "lining" over my sketch layer, I just... make the sketch my lines.
My sketches are usually pretty detailed so I think that helps, but I basically just erase and go over the lines meticulously in small increments until I'm left with linework. And if I'm having trouble with a spot, I'll just make a new layer, "properly" line that spot, erase the section of the sketch under it, and then merge the layers and move onto the next section. (I also keep my fingers over my undo and redo hotkeys, since a lot of lining can be just undoing a mistake and redoing it until you like it.)
For example, here's this dragon I've been working on, in its original sketch:
Tumblr media
And here it is halfway through the cleanup process, where you can see an amalgamation of clean lines amid the remaining sketch:
Tumblr media
And here's how it looks now:
Tumblr media
Lines won't cooperate? Make friends with the sketch! I often feel like it's easier to keep the personality of the original sketch when I do this also, though that's just personal preference.
Now as for keeping colour inside your lines, Layers and layer settings are your friends-- that and the magic wand tool (which is a selection tool).
When I use the magic wand tool, I tend to select the area Outside of my drawing first
Tumblr media
If there's a hole in my lines and I'm having trouble finding it, I cut a line across the drawing and use the magic wand tool again so I can see which section of the drawing the linebreak is in and fix it.
Once the lines are sealed, I invert my selection so it's inside the lines rather than outside! I prefer to start outside since I find it easier than individually selecting the inner parts of the drawing. It's worth mentioning that the magic wand tool is not perfect (especially if you have sketchy, ragged lines like I often do), so you might have to clean up the edges.
Tumblr media
You can make layers under your linework that you can freely draw on without disturbing your lines, and they will conform to your magic wand selection as well. What more, though, you can also make clipping layers/groups which are layers that affect only the pixels below them.
So like in this example here there are four layers. There's the lineart layer, the layer for the base fur colour, a layer for the details (beak, eyes, white spots), and then there's a clipping layer that is on top of the details layer.
Anything I draw on that clipping layer can only appear on pixels directly below it. This is useful for a lot of things like detailing and shading. It also means you can safely exit out of your magic wand selection and still remain in your perimeters.
Tumblr media
You can also lock layers which is like using a clipping layer, only you're affecting that actual layer instead of going over it. Whichever one you want to use is pretty much just personal preference or situational. You can also use these layer settings to colour in your lines, if that's something you want to do!
I hope some of this helps! I also hope that you're having fun with doing digital art! :D <3

how did you go about being self taught and learning art? like what were your first steps and the things you did? i really love your art and all so i just thought id ask
I was interested in art as a kid, but didn't have access to a lot growing up from a lack of exposure and before moving to the US, so I mainly just practiced lineart that i would find in coloring books for dbz or some comic books since we didn't have much when I was growing up. being an introvert, I just got bullied since other kids thought I just traced my lines so I didn't really believe i was talented in art for most of my life. that throws off your motivation growing up so you have to struggle finding self worth.
After that I eventually found out about digital art when I graduated high school and got a intuous tablet.. I kinda thought everthing was hand drawn so I had a lot to learn about things I never knew, even though I was exposed to every form of art on tv when growing up lol. I haven't been able to enter into my career path yet for art, so I'm focused on work and school and drawing when i have spare time.
my inspirations for giving art a try ranged from exposure to things like Gundam, Bleach, DBZ, Samurai Champloo, Yu-gi-oh cards, Batman comics (Dc comics), Studio Ghibli, Old Cartoon Network shows, Tim Burton movies, etc... I'd love to make a list, but it could get long haha, but as long as it sparked my curiosity...
The way I've taught myself for improving is to just start somewhere, and connect everything together, like an invisible connect-the-dots hehe. At this point, I just draw for fun while juggling life.
hope that long af answer helps!

Seriously I don't know how this Tumblr thingy works =))) how to reply? Why do people writing in tags? @@ I will try to figure it out on Sunday. As for now here we go another picture.
100 Theme Challenge - Variation 1 - 51. Sports
Description: I kinda cheat with this theme. Of course you can't expect me to draw masculine men running round doing the heavy sports *sweat drop* (dang it if I could I would *cries*) so I kind of googled: Is chess a sport? Is dart a sport? And it said yesssss xDDD So here we have Mello and Near playing chess and darts (as sports)
Author's notes:  - Here I want to introduce to you the other side of the sofa in Near's apartment's living room (in my imaginary fanfic that I have told you in previous picture). Near does a lot of activities in this area: playing with his puzzles, laying around, drawing (yayy he picks up a new hobby - there will be a picture), sleeping on his bean bag (this will appear in another picture later - yeah he seldom uses his bedroom, just sleeping around at random spots) - This happens around some time after Mello comes back from death (around some of his first visits). The idea of Near lying around and is not really focus on the game is inspired by a very short fic that I read from AO3 in which Near let Mello win on purpose 5 times and because he didn't use a chair he didn't really see the chess pieces. I incorporated it in my picture. - The idea of Near playing darts is changed a bit from my original imaginary fanfic. My initial though was that Near asked his staff for a light snack during the game and they fricking brought a pack of Pocky xD I think the snack itself brought up at that moment is not appropriate so Near used it as a game instead: he threw the sticks to the cup like that (and failed mostly). But I changed the Pocky to darts to fit the Sports theme. I know he uses a certain hand to throw darts but I am too lazy to read the manga again to know which hand. I hope I drew it correctly by chance :3 - The result of the game? Near wins of course. I don't let him lose on purpose. It will be an insult to Mello >"< but Mello can win with the dart game *hehe* - I enjoyed every moment when drawing this picture, from the pencil sketching to lineart and coloring with SAI. I realized that I don't need a lot of layers to color it, just adding blocks of different colors to the same layers and it will become shading/highlighting. The details on Mello's jacket is horrifying but again I enjoy every moment drawing it. It's like drawing Roxas' clothes (from Kingdom Hearts) but to a new level. I even added his rosary necklace. It's being extra of me though because I am sure you cannot see all the details on the small picture :3 I don't appreciate his sense of fashion (especially his black leather) but I do love all of his jackets: this red coat, the black leather vest when he rides his motorbike and the black coat with fur. If there is a chance I will draw them :3 - It took me more time than expected. I tried to finish it last night but stopped during midnight. My eyes hurt badly. And I will be away until midnight today so I try to finish this in the morning. But I think I have improved a bit from last picture yeah? *give Smile a pat on the head*
Characters: Mello Near from Death Note (I don't own Death Note)

How do you do your shading/lighting? It's really pretty!
First: I lay out my flat colors!
Tumblr media
Second: I choose what the shadows will be! I lean towards the red-orange shades, never choose straight black or grays for shadows on anything! (Unless your drawing is just black in white).
Tumblr media
Third: The brush I use is called “Hard Brush” Under the Airbrush section on procreate! Even if you don’t have procreate, many programs have brushes that allow the same pen pressure and effect! As shown below, the more pressure I put the darker the color will be. If for some reason your program can’t do that then lowering the opacity of your brush can also have the same effect!
Tumblr media
Fourth: I begin to put in the shadows where I think they’ll be, the fun part is I have no idea where the shadows will go. This is just for funzies~ But if you want to be accurate, look at references and mark where your light source(s) will be before adding shadows and/or lighting!
(don’t mind the middle image I used the selection tool which is why it has those line eUgH)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fifth: I begin to blend everything using the smudge tool! If you do not have a smudge tool then an airbrush could work as well! It will just take a while longer <:3
Tumblr media
Sixth: After smudging, it should look like this! Well that is if you want to shade like me, the ending product is whatever you feel happy with! <3
Tumblr media
Lighting Time! Okay First: Pick the original skin tone, and choose a lighter color of it as shown here!
Tumblr media
Second: Do exactly like with the shadows and add it wherever you want! I added it on the forehead, nose, above the lips and in the chin! Mainly because those areas tend to stick out more from the face so they’re out of the shadows. You may not see a difference at first from all the mixing and smudging but turn the layer on and off and you’ll see there is definitely a difference!
Tumblr media
Final step: Merge all the colored layers together and use the airbrush tool to add a bit of spice to the drawing. I normally do this when the character/object is outside or not in a dark room. Since the characters face and hair has a lot of warm colors I’ll add a contrast like blue (cool colors) to make it pop more!
I’ve added my favorite modes to use; Color Dodge, Add, and Screen! I use them for lighting or special effects. I added the normal as well for you guys to see the difference. My personal favorites are Add and Screen, they show more.
Now the final step for everything is the lineart! Add another layer and set it to clipping mask, use the airbrush tool and with whatever mode you want and whatever color you want (I personally love red) just go crazy and airbrush areas you think would make the drawing pop more!~ These last steps are my favorite part Hehe </3
Important Notes:
- When coloring make sure to divide the areas in different layers!! So example: Have skin color on one layer, hair color on a separate layer, clothing color on another layer, etc. It makes it easier for your future self to shade each area without having it all be on one layer and you struggling to only render the face and hair without it smudging the base colors!
- Never be afraid to shade darker or add a more lighter color!! In fact never be afraid when coloring or drawing (digitally that is) you could always just double tap the problem away if you don’t like it! Always experiment and remember it’s all about trusting the process and being patient!
- If you want more contrast on colors, normally, I follow the warm and cool color rule. Like I mentioned before; Red, Orange and Yellow are warm colors while Blue, Purple and Green are cool colors. So if you were to have a painting/drawing with a lot of warm colors add some cool colors as lighting or as background elements! It goes both ways.
- If this is your first time rendering in this style, then please know that it may not come out exactly right the first time. It took me a lot of practice with this style to get it right, I’m still learning and adapting new things! Be patient with yourself and keep practicing! You got this✨

It's been a long road, but I finally finished this... Been excited (and super nervous) about sharing this FC I thought up some years ago when I first got seriously into the TMNT franchise.
This is Roxanne (no official surname yet as I'm still working out a few things for the story but have toyed around with a few) created for the 2003 series' storyline set two years after the events of the Turtles Forever movie. (Some may argue it's not really canon, but eh?)
Speaking of her story, I don't want to give too much info away at this stage since it's in early development and things are bound to change, but it will be a fanfic centred around a blossoming, friends-to-more-than-friends romance -with some action sprinkled in here and there cause c'mon, it's TMNT, and I do try to keep true to canon (for the most part)- and y'all can take a wild guess as to who she'll eventually be paired with. ;)
I haven't a clue when I'll actually start the fic, but I do want to put things into motion cause I'm getting ancient, so even if there isn't writing, there will be some art uploaded every now and then, and not just in regards to this but other general TMNT related art.
As for this piece, I tried to recreate the character reference sheets that the animators made for the series (you can find them online :) ) as best I could, though it's not perfect of course, and I'm honestly not sure if I'm fully satisfied with the result when it comes to the proportions and overall style (plus I think the lineart isn't the correct thickness). This may be controversial amongst the fans, but my fav art style of the series is actually Back to the Sewer (BTTS), hence why I've chosen to draw my girl like this and how I envision the story. I honestly do love all the styles, but BTTS is just the most visually appealing to me (it's the eyes ;P ). That being said, it wasn't easy to replicate and I'm not certain I actually did it justice but I also worked on this way too long, so consider it a first attempt and I may just redraw her at a later stage since I do want to use the main base to showcase different outfits so it has to be right. I'm also a dumb-dumb since all the official characters are posed in such a way to show all the details of their clothing and such, but no~oo, I had to be different and try to display more of her personality in the chosen pose (plus I was already halfway done with it when I noticed this) so now you can't see that her jeans have a seam down the legs... x(
Just some extra info about her: She's 22, about 5'1'', and works as a veterinarian assistant. I wouldn't say her occupation is of major importance, but it does play a role in how she meets the Turtles... well, one of them anyway.
I'll stop rambling now cause this is getting long and all over the place. Glad to be able to finally share her with you guys and hope you find her to look okay so far. Hehe~ I shall be trying to draw her boss and co-worker soon if all goes well. 'Til next time~

Benevolent red hare of art, i come bearing gifts of clover and poppies, and seeking your wisdom (for once, without mildly cursed takes) :
How would you recommend one starts studying about snarling animals? Should it be a broad study of various beast or just the one they are interested in? How should one find key points in their "expression"?
Asking for an OC that's gonna go through some trauma and get a little snarky - litterally
-🦎
Ooooohohoho yess! Red warning for nerd going on a tangent ahead because I fking LOVE drawing snarly creatures with them big chompers!
Okay first things first, you've got the right idea there. Start off by looking at real life animals, the internet is full of pics of dogs, cats, whatever your heart desires, snarling and growling. Learning the anatomy and structure behind what you're trying to do is always the best way to give yourself a solid foundation for creativity. Hehe, gotta know the rules before breaking them, you know.
Anatomy anatomy, we've got it right? Moving on now-
You really don't have to aim for realism. I mean if that's what you want, sure go ahead. But if your art style is not photorealistic, learning to stylize is almost, if not just as, important as learning the anatomical basics. Hell I don't draw my monsters realistically and I don't plan to either, because I worked and shaped my style to convey a certain vibe and have a certain dynamic.
To bring out some examples, let's consider a wolf. In real life wolves have a lot of the upper gums visible while snarling, which I find goofy as hell. The edge of the gums where they meet the fangs are also very rounded, which I ignore in favour of a sharper edge that works better with my style. Here's some visuals:
Tumblr media
Compared to how I usually draw snarls, both in a more normal style and a drawing where I purposefully exaggerated the fangs:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It ends up quite different from the real life thing if you sit and compare them, but that's okay because those are changes done on purpose as opposed to just butchered anatomy.
A tip that could help with this step could be looking at artists that draw in a similar manner to what you'd like to achieve and learn from them. Observe and ask yourself how does x, y, z manage to convey this or that with their styles and find those little bits and pieces to incorporate in your work, like puzzle pieces. (Before anyone comes at me with bullshit like artstyle theft or something, I'm not suggesting people straight up copy, what I'm encouraging is to learn from each other)
This tip honestly stands for pretty much anything when it comes to drawing. It's what helped me work on my lineart for example. I looked at artists I admire and tried to understand how they achieved such well flowing lines. The result? I learned to apply more line variation, more harmonious poses and small details to my own art.
Anyway, back on track here. Ummm learn to draw teeth. I feel like well drawn fangs is what can make or break a good snarl most of the times. Study the proper placement on real life animals and skulls (and even learn to exaggerate the placement later if you wish). Also for the love of god, LOWER CANINES IN FRONT OF UPPER CANINES.
As a little gift of sorts, here's a shirt tutorial i did quite a while ago as per my Instagram followers' request. It's specifically for canine faces, but it may end up useful:

Hope this helps! :D

Anonymous said: Hello friend may I ask about your brush settings? Because I am in love with your colouring and line work!
Anonymous said: Your art is so cute! What brushes do you use?
Answer: i main SAI2 now, but here are the same settings when i was using them in the original SAI!!
Tumblr media
(i just copied my own settings in SAI2 now so they should work the same... also sometimes i use the marker tool for doodling nowadays)
Anonymous said: do you post speedpaints anywhere? i'd love to see your painting process! your art style is phenomenal hngh
Anonymous said: Do you have a youtube channel? Just wondering, since I can't seem to find it. I'd like to watch some speedpaints or something .u.
Anonymous said: could do you a tutorial on how you color hair??? its so pretty and baffles me all the time
Anonymous said: Would you ever do a tutorial showing how you draw? I've see you post on how you color but not lineart (ps your style is super duper cute!!)
Anonymous said: Ayy ;3c hello stocky, your art is amazing ;; how is your process for color your drawings? Plz need to know! God bless you♥
Anonymous said: How do you color soooo well? Can I get some tips? ( ;n; )
Answer: i’ve sometimes done lil art streams for friends before! i could use the same capture software to make speedpaints sometime.... i’ve been considering it for a while actually!
my process can be a lil sloppy when i try to break it down into steps for tutorials so i think the best way to show + explain is through art streams (& video process)...
i was thinking of starting art streams on twitch in the near future too... it’s just when i’ll finally be able to get setup finally that i’d be able to set a streaming schedule
Anonymous said: I never played Megaman but I used to watch my older brother play it, and I finally started playing it because of your art too lmao (i love it)

Anonymous said: ((whispers, this may have been asked before and I wasn't sure where to ask it, but what does "i tried my best x5" mean? is it a reference to something? ;;))
Answer: OH NO WORRIES I’LL CLEAR IT UP!! it’s in reference to a youtube user’s rp comments as “kagamine len”. i’ve seen it MANY years ago & at that time it became sorta an inside joke between me & my friends.
Tumblr media
later i referenced/used it as a response a few times on my len askblog to keep it going.

hi, I love your art sm and reading your au is so funnnn but I was wondering if we could get to know you more ? if you’re comfortable with it obviously hehe but I hope you had a great day bub !
I posted some stuff about me in my Instagram stories, but I realized there is nothing on Tumblr! Let’s do this!
I’m a Canadian from Quebec, so my main language is French. ( Aoyama’s power! )
I’m 18 and I’m a 3D animation student! I really want to work in the Videogame/Movie industry. I still have a lot to learn but I can do pretty cool 3D elements and environments for now!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love to draw backgrounds, I think it’s relaxing and can add depth and details to an art piece or story. Because my school program is very time consuming, I don’t have a lot of time to draw. I mostly draw in the bus (I have 1h30 of bus each days) That explains a bit my shaky/sketchy lineart ahah! I use an IPad 6 with the Apple pen to do my art, so I can bring it everywhere!
Tumblr media
My favorite shows/games/books are: My hero academia, Voltron, Marvel, Percy Jackson and HOO, Avatar The last airbender, One punch man, Stanley Parable, Life is strange and Portal
Tumblr media
I also love to cosplay and to go to conventions with my friends! I build all my props! What’s the point of having a practical costume when you can be badass? Huge armor, LEDs, articulated wings, bring it on!
I like big projects, Wanted is one of them and I’m not the type of person who gives up quickly. I’m also super competitive and really passionate. I’m so happy you like my art!

What’s going on people of tumblr.
Today i bring up this...scenario(?) i’ve been doing the last week. I really (REALLY) needed to prove myself whit something challenging so i come up whit this.
I noticed some time ago that i’d been avoiding drawing space, maybe because of how i ended my degree in arquitecture...it could be said that i was scared of it, you know, not for the desing itself but for the actual drawing. So here i am facing my fears, how brave -__-
This was about desing an interesting space and push my lines to make something unpredictible. Somehow the unpredictible of my work it’s the heavy detailed textures of meat, skin and dry bones, organic forms and dark themes. I could say that every portion of my visual library on my head is on this drawing. (of course not, but what i meant is that i used no references, even for the color)
It could be said also that this is the product of my last year effort to try to find my style in color and themes, i am undoubtly walking the path of darkness in that sense hahahaha. But it’s nothing to be shamed, i only need to be more consecuent whit it.
Maybe also my way is more subtle than full gore/impact, the horror most of the times is hidden and i’ll like to work on that whit my future pieces.
So enjoy
Also, i have some juicy process hehe check it out
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The lineart process was dificult, but it could been more of a pain if i didn’t make the volumetric shapes fisrt. This is something i for sure will take in mind in the future

Color somehow was more easy than i thougth, after the plane colors i armonized everything tone it up a little into red and vary some surfaces to let it take more feeling.

May 13th-May 19th, 2020 Reader Favorites Archive
The archive for the Reader Favorites chat that occurred from May 13th, 2020 to May 19th, 2020.  The chat focused on the following  question:
Which comic has your all-time favorite artwork, and why do you like it?
carcarchu
Oh yes i can say this with certainty but the webcomic with my all-time favourite artwork by far is 榴花不及春 https://www.manmanapp.com/comic-1404769.html. it's not just that the art is beautiful but the way the artists create mood and tone is just jaw-dropping. I actually got chills a few times while reading it from the art alone and that's not something that i can recall happening when reading a lot of webcomics, or actually any fiction in general. there's such a elegance to the line weight and movement of the art that brings life to the characters. the artists' use of lighting adds such depth to the scenes, sometimes creating a warm and inviting atmosphere and other times a haunting and foreboding chill. the time i've spent with this comic is not something i'll soon forget(edited)
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
This is such a difficult question for me. Gahhh, so many pretty comics out there.... I guess, in regards to artwork alone, my favorite is the 2015 version of Countdown to Countdown by Vel. (https://tapas.io/series/Countdown) Just... such beautiful work. I'm a sucker for detailed painterly styles I will admit, but also the color and lighting is phenomenal. The way Vel sets up the mood with color and movement is amazing. The textures and brush strokes are simply gorgeous! Unfortunately, Vel rebooted the comic to a new style last year, and while it is still really gorgeous, I must admit, I don't like it nearly as much as the original. (What can I say? I have a bias for painterly styles.) Still highly recommend it! (https://tapas.io/series/CTC) I do want to point out some honorable mentions for me: * Ghostblade by WLOP (https://tapas.io/series/GhostBlade) - another painterly comic * The Sixth Dalai Lama by Ze Zhao (https://tapas.io/series/thesixthdalailama) - discontinued as far as I'm aware, but painted traditionally with watercolor! * Wind Rose by Sfera (https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/wind-rose/list?title_no=54306) - Painterly again (later on as the artist improved) but also great expressions I will say, I also love deliciously detailed lineart, but I don't see it a lot (especially in webcomics), and I cannot think of one right now :/(edited)
carcarchu
ahh ghost blade is a great choice @Cronaj (Whispers of the Past) and while i agree that countdown to countdown's new art isn't as sumptuous as it used to be for a comic it works better and the simpler art style allows vel to release at a more consistent rate without injuring herself so i really respect the change(edited)
Cronaj (Whispers of the Past)
Yeah, definitely understand why they changed styles, because oml can a painterly style be taxing
DanitheCarutor
I can't pick just one! But to start off I love the art of Lost Honey (https://www.losthoney.com/), everything about it is so soft, the linework, the colors the character designs, the panelling, it all has such a nice feel to it. The creator's use of color is sooo easy on the eyes, it fits so well with the comic. The linework has such a nice flow and movement, there is never a feeling of stiffness, it almost reminds me of water. Also I'm a complete sucker for traditionally drawn comics. Even though it's discontinued as far as I know, Thicker Than Blood also has really nice aesthetics! (https://tapas.io/series/Thicker-Than-Blood-), it has such a unique style almost like classical art mixed with glass. The designs are detailed yet highly stylized. The quality varied from time to time, given the amount of work that goes into them, but overall I really liked the look of this comic. Carciphona is another one I like aesthetically. (https://tapas.io/series/carciphona) The art of this one has improved immensely since it started, and while I'm not a fan of the look of the earlier pages, I'm loving how their work has evolved. The style is very Japanese inspired, there is a lot going on sometimes, but has its own unique look and is very well crafted. Also I love the action scenes, how they're handled makes the scenes look intense, sometimes grandiose.(edited)
shadowhood (SunnyxRain)
Oh my god I love carciphona’s art! I always get shilin’s art whenever she sells at Anime North I’ve been meaning to read carciphona for a while so thanks for reminding me!
FeatherNotes(Krispy)
Hands down it is Black Out Cityhttp://blackoutcity.ca/lvl10.php Jay does these amazing illustrative panels when they introduce a new chapter and it has me hooked on each update! The way that the title is incorporated within the panel is beautifully done, and their attention to detail and effective use of contrast is breath taking. Definitely a huge inspiration of mine! I also want to shout out to O'Sarilho by @Capitania do Azar . The palettes she uses are unique and dynamic, and the layouts read like the comic is animated (there's even animated parts in it!) the way she draws action and portrays horrific parts is phenomenal!https://sarilho.net/en/
(also i love this prompt but i could def go on forever with it hehe)
Deo101 [Millennium]
I wholeheartedly second O'sarilho ^^ it's a comic I regularly reccomend and I probably won't ever get over how lovely it looks! (I'll have to look for more comics who's art I love later)(edited)
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
I'll throw in Heart of Gold https://heartofgoldcomic.com/. The ethereal palette, the clean and crisp architecture, the panels that work perfectly with the church imagery, and the energy of the lines and brush strokes. SO GOOD.
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
I agreEE
shadowhood (SunnyxRain)
Okay for me it's two webcomics One of them is Tracy JB's Lackadaisy https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/lackadaisy/list?title_no=39790&page=1 https://www.lackadaisycats.com/ Everything she does is wonderful; colour, expression, character, plot.....her art inspired me to embark on expression work. I remember being younger and being so inspired by her webcomic. Hands down can't find a flaw. The other one is Muted by anidoodles https://www.webtoons.com/en/supernatural/muted/list?title_no=1566 I was introduced to her from her Heather animatics on youtube. I love how her inking and cell shading is simple but VERY effective; the use of bold bright colours and watercolours was amazing. My art style is heavily inspired by hers and overall, I love how she captures people's attention with it.(edited)
Miranda
Oh I love Muted!
shadowhood (SunnyxRain)
looks at your profile pic heheh

I mean, I'd have to say I love "Nothing Special" by Katie Cook. Her art style and color scheme is just easy on the eyes and I love her intricate filled backgrounds. https://www.webtoons.com/en/fantasy/nothing-special/list?title_no=1188&page=1 Phantomarine is another favorite. I absolutely love the painted look and it's been inspiring my newer pages. Every page is just a work of art and I love the color choices and just everything about it. http://www.phantomarine.com/
shadowhood (SunnyxRain)
PHANTOMARIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE
sssfrs (JOE IS DEAD)
I’m also going to say Phantomarine
Theres also one I found recently called Bybloemen that has a really cool art style
FeatherNotes(Krispy)
ohhh Bybloemen is gorgeous and is so up your alley Sssfrs!
sssfrs (JOE IS DEAD)
Its so good
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
Woah, it's like woodcuts!! I like it!
Joichi [Hybrid Dolls]
Ooh this is a hard choice since I see beautiful webcomic art alot. Recently my favorite art and coloring style I've been inspired by are: - The Glass Scientists https://www.theglassscientists.com/ Some of the pages are well executed, I like the character designs, fantasy with alchemists, werewolves and more. Ghost Teller https://www.webtoons.com/en/horror/ghost-teller/list?title_no=1307 I enjoy QTT use of gradient coloring and spooky atmosphere, it looks like alot of time were used to make each strip. I like how the characters are linked to each story, it's not as spooky as more dramatic. They are all short stories Gourmet Hound: https://www.webtoons.com/en/drama/gourmet-hound/list?title_no=1245 When I think of slice of life with a soft pleasant color palette, this story comes in mind. I like to refer to her work as well as other SoL comics for inspiration on coloring.(edited)
Joichi [Hybrid Dolls]
@carcarchu ooh I love the different comics you recommend. It's always unique and pretty. I hope there's a tranlation strip for '榴花不及春'(edited)
shadowhood (SunnyxRain)
GOURMET HOUND
IM SO HAPPY ITS HERE
chalcara [Nyx+Nyssa]
Funnily, the webcomic with my all-time favourite art is Order of the Stick. Love how much expression and narrative work this simple style does.
RebelVampire
Definitely Rising Sand https://risingsand.glass/. The art is immensely detailed in ways that are relevant to the world and story, has beautiful color choices, beautiful compositions, amazing light effects, great backgrounds, and so on. And just overall the skill level is so high I'd need another 20 years experience with art to even be able to begin to point out a single flaw.
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
^Ooh yes! I don’t know how Rising Sand keeps that quality so high. From their posts, it seems like a bit of a nightmare sometimes But the end product is like its own animated film!
Joichi [Hybrid Dolls]
Omg I'm often in awe with those artists making high quality art that looks like it belongs in graphic novels or film. I can imagine those big details will take alot of time to put together. (edited)
I once happen to meet the creators for Rising Sand. Very passionate writer and artist team who have quite some experiences and strong teamwork. (Life goals!)
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
so many comics to check out :0
Deo101 [Millennium]
wow rising sand is really gorgeous
shadowhood (SunnyxRain)
Whoa rising sand is really good
actually reminds me of Tigress Queen by Allidraws https://www.tigressqueen.com/comic/page-0001(edited)
especially the parts where she draws glass and architecture it's very vibrant and full of life
Joichi [Hybrid Dolls]
Gosh I realized I have a trend of loving slice of life stories, so I might end up recommending that genre afew times!
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
(don't forget webcomic_recs for recommending good comics in general outside of the weekly topic!)
Unfortunately Korean-only at this time, but I am in awe of the art in this comic. It's not very polished, but you can tell the artist really knows what he's doing in terms of anatomy, perspective and composition. https://comic.naver.com/webtoon/list.nhn?titleId=701535&weekday=wed
Joichi [Hybrid Dolls]
oops I remembered that, I'll go repost there instead. Thanks Keii. Wow that comic(edited)
Joichi [Hybrid Dolls]
I really want to read more Korean and Chinese webcomics, they have a different vibe and story atmosphere. I enjoy looking into them as inspiration on how to stage my webtoon scenes.(edited)
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
Hmmmm, I wouldn't recommend the one above for how to make vertical scroll comics. That one was originally made for print and then adapted afterward, and it shows.
Still absolutely amazing action art, though!
Holmeaa - working on WAYFINDERS
@LadyLazuli (Phantomarine) Heart of Gold is SO beautiful! I agree with you 100 procent!
I will add The Ocean Soul. Holey damn this comic is SO gorgeous!!!! https://tapas.io/series/The-Ocean-Soul
Javi
Gonna add this before this prompt changes. I think Oren's Forge has the best artwork I've ever seen done in a webcomic. Every panel has a setting that's so bold and pristine in color, layout, and background that it begs to be animated. Every color used paints a different mood to show character development and the style of the characters is so stylized and interesting to look at. Even the story is interesting enough that it gets you hooked and wondering what will happen next. Also talking animals, what more can I say? :) There's more discussion in FurAffinity than there is on Tapas so I'm putting two links https://m.tapas.io/series/OrensForge https://www.furaffinity.net/full/18260576/

The artist questions, all of them.
Hello there! (ノ´ヮ´)ノ*:・゚✧
1. Favouritemedium or technique?I like both digital and traditional. Honestly, I am not very good attraditional art since it does not allow you to make all those mistakes andadjustments digital does but I really enjoy it, especially little randomdoodles or watercolours. Occasionally I just draw something in digital, printit and then trace it onto paper so I could watercolour it later. I will workhard on my skills in both fields but for now, I prefer digital sketching andlineart (I utterly despise colouring in digital, haha).
2. Doyou have a specific place you like to create at?I usually just draw at home because it’s the most comfortable way for meto do it.
3. Doyou value quality or quantity more?Quality, 100 %. I am always envious of other artists who can produce alot of art pieces very quickly but that comes with practice I think. I mightget to that point sometime in the future as well but for now I like to take mytime (please read as WAY TOO MUCH TIME) with my creations and work on themuntil I am at least somewhat satisfied with them. That’s basically why I createlike… a single picture a year, ugh.
4. Whatwould you consider the best approach towards improvement?Definitely inspiration, be it from others, music or whatever you findinspiring. Never ever treat other artists as threats or anything in that tonebut rather as an inspiration and try your best to learn from them and theirtechniques. For example livestreams or speedpaintings are a great way ofstudying someone else’s working process. Something that really helps me as well is constantly trying out new things, beit new brushes, colours or techniques. Always try to push yourself a bitfurther with each piece – try something you haven’t done before. A lot ofpeople tell you to draw every day which is wonderful, yes, but very tiring aswell, so don’t be afraid to take breaks. Honestly, I don’t draw every singleday, usually I make a veeeeeeeery long pauses between my drawing sessions andthat is alright, too, I still notice a certain degree of progress. Art is notsupposed to be forced, it’s predominantly supposed to be fun. Pauses can behelpful, too, of course. They can help you notice those little mistakes youmake in your pieces and allow you to fix them. Don’t worry about not having a particulardistinctive style or anything, that all will come eventually, just don’t loseyourself to the machine of constantly produced content – take your time and trynew things every change you get.
5. Doyou ever feel pressured to create?Oh heck yes and it really flippin’ sucks. However, it’s not like… fromthe outside but more of an inside process I guess? But honestly, if you feelpressured to create, just take a break from it because that is definitely notgood for any sides – you, your work, your health or your followers/fans.
6. Doyou have a specific time your creative side is the most prominent? Not personally I think? It really depends but occasionally I can stay upuntil ungodly hours drawing which feels really good, to be honest.
7. Asmall sketchbook or a big canvas?I actually prefer small sketchbooks when drawing traditional. Big canvasesmake me quite overwhelmed in real life but when drawing digital, my canvasesare usually A4 or A3 format (so it would look pretty if printed, hehe).
8. Doyou ever feel like giving up? What do you do to fight this feeling?Way too often, actually. I get very envious when it comes to otherartists but not in a vile way, I am very happy for them and thankful forsharing their gorgeous creations and I like to let them know but I envy theirenergy and creativeness and it really beats me to the ground sometimes. I don’tfind myself or my work unique in any way and therefore I don’t even share mydrawings online anymore, I just create for myself or my own enjoyment, althoughoccasionally I would really love to show them off and probably embarrass myselfimmensely, hah. However, the other day I was going through my art folder withall the WIPs and I went through some serious emo hours so…  I guess that’s what keeps me going – the sheerlove for the craft and creating new things. Hey, maybe one day I’ll be braveenough to show my work off again, who really knows.
9. Doyou enjoy sharing your ideas with others?Yes, I really do and I do that WAY TOO MUCH to the point I start hatingthe idea and never progress with it… basically. Sigh.
10. Howdoes the treatment of artists make you feel?Upset, usually. I mean it depends on the point of view. Some people arereally nice and kind and some are just a fucking pain the in the ass, to be honest.Recently I’ve noticed how entitled some consumers of artwork feel and literallybully artists when they do not provide the desired content and that’s… prettyhorrifying. I’ve witnessed way too many artist close their accounts due toexcessive bullying and that makes me incredibly sad. I honestly feel like weshould be grateful that they even feel like sharing their work with us for free. Also, if you don’t like something or don’t agree with it, there is always ablock or mute button somewhere. That’s the magic of the internet, for some areally hard concept to grasp as I’ve noticed.Oh and also commissions. A lot of people tend to say they are overpricedbut never really care to consider all the time and effort an artist has to putinto the piece. Just… stop, please. And on the other hand, if you feel like theartist is undercharging, feel free to tip them.
11. Doyou think art has the potential to change the world? You see, I am a big fan of the Korean group BTS and they just finishedtheir series called Love Yourself which carried an incredibly sweet andimportant message, making millions of people around the world truly see thepositives and love within themselves, so yeah, I really think so. We consumeart every single day in any shape or form you can think of so if the medium is usedin the right way, it has the potential to do great things. Sadly, art is used tohurt, too, but as long as your intentions are kind, don’t be afraid toparticipate as well and make the world a better place for everyone.
Thank you so much for asking!! ♥Have a lovely day!
