Can I ask a question? I like your sanders sides a lot and you give them a lot of personality in their designs! How do you make them like that? Or I guess I mean, what inspires you to make them the way that you do? I want to draw the sides but I'm not sure how to start other than their canon designs!

Oh my goodness I LOVE this question! For me, it's all about the feelings you get when you see them and the vibes I want to express. The Sides embody, to me, more than an aesthetic it should also encompass personality, role, and intention. In other words, I match their aesthetics to their function and the intent of what I feel like Thomas originally intended for them for their first short videos before they were actual sides.

Let us pick Roman, because even though people say he's not, he tends to be everyone's favourite to reblog fro me because he's pretty.

So I started by drawing him exactly as he was and to me he felt flat- in the show he's exactly as he should be but I am an artist and to me he feels more than what he looks like- it's dreamy, it's romantic, it's like he's giving childhood favouritre Disney Prince vibes, you know?

Inspiration 1: Prince Phillip

Hands down the biggest inspiration comes from him because he IS my favourite disney prince. Just looks a the hair swoop and the eyelashes- perfect. So I went ok my favourite Disney Prince is Phillip, let's start here. Before the CGI movies, there was such a romantic feeling about classic Disney princess movies and I've always loved the romantic feeling of Sleeping Beauty. The backgrounds are stunning, the way she's animated makes my bi ass give heart eyes and I loved that he was the only prince at the time who had a personality (until Beast but that's a whole other can of worms because he started out as an asshole/grumpy). I feel like modern Disney movies miss a lot of the romantic dreamy feeling of the older 2d movies because there was such care into the painted backgrounds being LESS realistic and more a fabulous idea of what a background should be and AHA! MORE INSPIRATION~! Let's make Roman a fabulous romantic idea of what a prince should be!

Inspiration 2: Faerietale Knights in Shining Armour

Our ideas of medieval knights are nothing like actual knights which are more reminiscent of hired military and enforcers. Our ideas of faerietale knights in shining armour are brave knights who would go off to kill a dragon to show their devotion to the one they love. Sword fighting heroes- is that not Roman if not an idealized romantic "royal knight wants to win the heart of the love with courageous deeds, acts of chivalry, selfless devotion" etc. Prince Phillip is a good model of this. Defeats a dragon and true love's kiss saves the day. A perfect romantic dream isn't it? Realistic? No of course not, but Roman isn't realistic he's creativity and romance which absolutely ignores practicality for the dream.

So we have this culmination of dreamy romantic disney prince and faerietale influence.

Now it's about aesthetics- Roman is reds and golds and whites, all royal colours typically associated with bravery, lineage, and strength and purity etc.

Inspiration 3: Media referencing

So let's find some movie or media equivalence I can reference. They came mostly in the forms of Narnia and Once Upon a Time.

So some aesthetic inspirations for belts and textures, missing the epaulets.... so to military garb!

Inspiration 4: Russian royals

Let's face it no one does embellishments like this any more <3

Inspiration 5: Lions

Roman's colours being red gold and white give me lion inspiration too so I looked up royal lion iconography as well (which ended up with a lot of lion king in the search because this was before AI but like.... it's not incorrect and the wavy flowy mane acted like hair. If Hamlet with lions is inspiring then use it, right? that have some AMAZING lion king-style artists on deviantart to get inspired by, it's a whole thing, mad respect) But ANYWAYS it gave me some cool stuff to be inspired by too.

Inspiration 6: Classic Golden Age Hollysood Leading Ladies (Note that this isn't femme fatales, because for Janus I used femme fatales as inspiration)

I knew that I just HAD to give Roman that Marilyn Monroe beauty mark, yes he paints it on every day yes it's in the same spot every day yes it's necessary.

Ultimately this culminated in a checklist of things that I wanted for him:

He must give the feeling of Prince Phillip in disney prince style

I wanted him to have flowey hair that makes him look softer and romantic and can be pulled up into a ponytail if necessary.

Must have a beauty mark and eyelashes that go on for ages reminiscent of old hollywood ladies, and let's throw in nail polish too.

I wanted him to have an outfit that would be his original but embellished to hell that can be like Narnia or OUaT in terms of texture and added stuff. It needed more gold, 100% needed epaulets (the shoulder things with the dangly rstuff), and it needed a belt where a sword could be attached. Danglies not always necessary, but look really good when done and is reminiscent of old fashioned military garb and Russian royalty.

He needed to look like he's used to wearing this outfit every single day and going out of his way to do so.

Ended up with this:

1) don't worry too much about speeding through asks, sweetheart, you're doing fine. Take your time and do your thing at your own pace. Anyone has an issue with it? I'll fight em 😤

2) IDEA TIME

So imagine Buggy getting absolutely SMOTHERED in valentines days gifts - from friends, underlings, allies, secret admirers (she thinks they're all fake or lies), and her partners of the year.

She and Alvida do a Self Care Self Love event (maybe include Uta and Perona bc smth about them being so supportive of Buggy coming out as trans and just so easily slotting her in to girls night makes me soft).

Ritchie wears a special Valentine's Day bow, and he gives extra lion licks to his favorite people. He doesn't quite get the whole concept of HOLIDAYS beyond that it makes his humans so happy and silly and so he too is happy and silly. Lion loves.

Mohji and Cabaji, every year, make Buggy a gift for Valentine's. She gives them little gifts too, but theirs aren't conventional - they were there from the beginning, and so they've seen the best and worst of each other. They're besties your honor.

After Impel Down, Buggy wakes up on Valentine's to a MOUNTAIN of cards, candies, stuffed animals, flowers, and balloons. Maybe half of them are signed. It's a long ass affair to organize them.

When she starts dating Crocodile and Mihawk, they hadn't seen the Karai Bari Variant of Valentine's Day. Needless to say, when they wake up and walk with Buggy to get breakfast, they are both BLINDSIDED and BAMBOOZLED by this veritable TON of gifts. Buggy just sighs. "Guys. Really?"

"WE LOVE YOU, CAPTAIN BUGGY!!!"

"I can't eat all this. Okay, line up, I'm passing out candies at random. Consider this a treat before breakfast."

"CAPTAIN BUGGY IS SO GENEROUS AND KIND!!!"

"I- ya know what, sure, whatever. I haven't had coffee yet. I don't feel like arguing."

Crocodile and Mihawk though are surprised when she offers them a soft smile and... two boxes? "Open them when you want to, boys, no rush."

She gets a delivery later on in the day, a crate with a blue rose painted on the top. She huffs. When asked, she shrugs it off. "Shanks is still being a damned sap."

He sends her presents as often as he can - with a relatively ser address for Karai Bari, she is more easily accessible, which makes him go a little overboard. In the crate are her favorite candies (ghost pepper flaked dark chocolates), soft stuffed animals, new clothes, a dress, flowers and silly trinkets. ((And maybe a little treasure map he made just for her)).

Buggy would give thoughtful gifts - smth for Croc's bananawani nursery or specialty cleaner for his jewelry, new seeds for Mihawk's garden he mentioned wanting once in passing or new cording to rebrand Yoru's hilt, etc.

She also ties her hair up on holidays, puts on an apron, and joins the cooks in the kitchens. Cooking is smth she's good at, if a tad embarrassed by, but baking if her favorite thing to do. It's like chemistry and showmanship mixed together, two of her most favorite things. Getting the chance to indulge in it is smth she rarely lets herself have, but she makes exceptions for certain days.

And if Mihawk and Croc, knowing this by that point, pooled together to get her her own supplies to indulge more freely in their shared space, away from prying or attentive eyes, well...

Valentines Day isn't exactly a cliche on their little handmade home, but the sentiment, the intention, the love is there.

((And if Buggy just so happens to send a few batches of Shanks' favorite cookies to him a week after the day, well, he'll treasure them!!!

AND THIS IS ALL AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A bit late to Valentine's Day (sorry, really akjjddnjk) but I absolutely adore it. Buggy loves Valentine's Day and the thought of everybody getting her gifts and also enjoying the holiday on her island is so cute,,, Everything is perfect and tbh, after coming out as a woman is even better because she's finally able to do it as herself. I think she wanted to do it really bad when she was a kid.

Her crew is so silly,, And having a whole day with Perona and Alvida makes her feel so loved,, Crying and sobbing. Also, Crocodile and Mihawk aren't used to celebrating these things, so now that they're with her they're surprised by how much they enjoy it. Not the holiday itself because in general it's extremely annoying and they do not want to be there with all this drama-- But they do like seeing her happy and giving her gifts <333 Why have mafioso-looking boyfriends if they aren't going to shower you with gifts, you know? And also, they're losers for her, which makes it better.

Something I noted while reading the manga that's still really interesting to me is how there's no Objectively Completely Good (or Evil) character in Dungeon Meshi. I think it interacts with Kui's really believable character dynamics, too.

Under the cut for major spoilers:

From Laios' party, we have no purely Good person. Laios is often the punchline/stooge/what have you, but he has his positive traits. The party trusts and follows him despite his foibles. Chilchuck is so resistant/bad at emotional communication that he tries to sabotage his own team (to protect them) and ended up divorced without knowing how, and almost dies because he was too embarrassed to admit this. Marcille is a mix of proud and brilliant that causes as many problems as it solves, including the whole Committing An International Felony thing and that's the START of it in some ways. Senshi's willingness to stick to his guns makes him inflexible towards his teammates in ways that can cause issues, like the Mandrake situation or driving Chilchuck to berserk rage in the trap room.

(Sidenote, I've realized Kabru and Laios are foils not just over the monster thing - an unquenchable passion that drives each in their own way - but because of their team leadership styles. Kabru is very personable, but as mentioned in my prev post linked above, Laios is knowledgeable about team synergy and skills. Also considering his interaction in Marcille's nightmare, Laios tries to take his team's emotions seriously, he just isn't always the best at it because he's assuming from himself as a baseline, and that's just not accurate to most non-Falin and non-Senshi interactions. (And even some of those.)

My point is that while charisma is the basis of Kabru's MO, Laios isn't incapable of caring about his team and understanding them, it's not not as obvious because he goes about it in a different way.)

It's been noted before, but both Thistle and the Winged Lion aren't totally evil. Not only are they sympathetic, but they have virtues in their own ways.

Thistle's greatest crime was loving his family too much, and it is a tragedy of literally epic proportions, kicking off the entire series. His methodology is suspect and involving the WL was doomed from the outset, but his intentions were legitimately good. The kingdom's citizens even begin sort of forgiving him or at least trying to accept him at the end of the series, which is really touching. There's a lot of debate over the concept of redemption arcs, and to be frank, I don't think it's possible to redeem Thistle's actions at this point, but that doesn't mean he's narratively required to die in isolation. If anything, that would contradict the communal elements repeated in the narrative. It's the citizens' choice to forgive him, not a requirement. It's not exactly a surprise as the series was closing on a happy ending for all involved (aside from WL ig) at that point, but it's still nice, and it wasn't a lock.

The Winged Lion may never have had the capacity to be Objectively Good, as an eldritch being with no basis in humanity or the physical world initially, but the manga takes the time to show the WL bemoaning the loss of followers, the loss of potential "flavors". Although the WL has immense power, that power is -not unlike the Genie in Disney's Aladdin now that I think of it lol- bent to the whims of creatures that WL simply doesn't and will never have the capacity to truly understand. WL also doesn't seem able to interact with the physical world on most levels until the ending, requiring a snowballing of power and the reaving of reality itself before the Winged Lion can really affect the "world", and arguably it can't be the purely physical world at that point in order to be interacted with. The Winged Lion is antagonist and overlord, yes, but also a victim in a sense. Like Thistle, redemption is impossible. Unlike Thistle, forgiveness and cohabitation is also impossible. It's not the WL's fault. I kind of think of the WL as like a bear or other wildlife that has developed such a taste for human food, garbage, etc. that they will keep breaking into houses and dumpsters no matter what. There's no infrastructure available to rehabilitate the WL, to return the Winged Lion to the eldritch plane it once inhabited. Only the WL could choose to do so, I think, and notably doesn't. Still, I can pity the Winged Lion like one does the bear that gets shot for breaking into dumpsters and biting humans in the process.

Anyways, many more examples abound, but it's a fascinating element to an already complex and fascinating story.

Hunter sensing the storm and trying to determine what direction its moving: Reasonable Hunter for some reason needing to touch dirt about it: WHAT ARE YOU EVEN DOING?

All this time we thought Hunter's enhancement was his enhanced senses turns out that it's actually just talking to the dirt.

Hunter literally refuses to adjust for being a man down, Tech and Wrecker are trying to act like they ARE DOWN SOMEONE SURE but it's fine they'll deal, and Omega is just So Deep in her teenage depressions

"What's with you?" WRECKER WHAT DO YOU THINK? And just telling her she'll get used to not having Echo around. Wrecker IS the most emotionally intelligent of the batch, but it's a bit like being the tallest at the gnome convention isn't it?

This mineral is highly unstable and destructive. We need the child to drill for it.

Omega is pulling out the sass for this and I do love it, it's the first time she's let it out on anyone but Cid. She's TIRED, she MISSES ECHO, everyone is acting like it's NO BIG DEAL, let her be angry and pissy actually.

The way that Tech and Omega have the same external reaction to stress and it is turning the sass up 3000 times. Their processing may be different but good god are they similar in some ways.

LITERALLY LION KING BEHAVIOR I STILL REMEMBER THE VAGUE MEME FOR THIS. THEY PUT DYNAMITE ON SIMBA.

Tech looked at his dialogue options and literally it was like

[Persuasion] Assure Omega that while things are changing it will be alright and she will adapt *Rolls a nat 1* THIS SQUAD EXISTED BEFORE ECHO WAS A PART OF IT, AND IT WILL EXIST AFTER. WHAT IS YOUR ISSUE?

Everyone looking at Tech like WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?

Tech is so sincere when saying "She... said she wanted to be alone?" he genuinely does not process like this and the thought that she'd say she wanted to be alone if she didn't fully mean it DOES NOT OCCUR TO HIM.

Just slap those extremely volatile tubes into the satchel to roll around it's fine nothing to worry about.

THE WAY THAT TECH JUMPS AFTER HER IMMEDIATELY STILL GETS ME BUT ESPECIALLY THAT SHE DISAPPEARS INTO FOG WHICH HE JUMPS THROUGH WITHOUT HESITATION. He doesn't know what's down there and it doesn't matter, he is GOING AFTER HER.

(Plus parallels to the season finale again, and another example of just how much they can survive.)

Hunter sensing that something, somewhere is wrong. Because their day hasn't been hard enough already.

I love the small details like Tech having to shake water out of his goggles.

Just crawl down into this dark tunnel, carrying the extremely explosive material, throw yourself into the raging rapids, and get thrown into our cavern. Also if the vials touch each other too hard you die <3

Wrecker has the right assessment, this planet sucks

GODDDD THIS SCENE BETWEEN OMEGA AND TECH. Tech having to take a long moment to try to think about his replies, trying so hard to make sure that he's completely understood, because it's important that this in particular get through. Explaining how he feels the losses, intensely, but that he focuses on adapting to the change. I'm WEAK.

And god Omega's little "We're more than that. We're a family. Aren't we?" gets to me every time too but especially since I saw someone suggest the final two lines that sum everything up might be "We're more than that. We're a family." stated with utmost confidence, and like, I would absolutely shatter, I would BREAK INTO A MILLION PIECES, I would CRY like an INFANT.

Following up this wonderful soft moment with [WRECKER SCREAMING]

As we know, the fact that they hid Hunter's wet hair from us is a fucking crime.

Setting up that Tech is good at making precision shots in preparation for the finale. I see you writers, and I hate it.

This conversation with Cid is SO fucking funny like it's awful she's completely unhelpful, but also I feel like the Empire is definitely there, because this is the start of her entire vibe towards them Changing.

I can't wait for the S4 finale episodes to solidify MK as monkie. Maybe we get a scene with MK's war form and Azure going "...fuck."

Also good mentor Sun Wukong moment where he apologizes because he has no idea what's going on but he's pretty sure it's fault and he manages to calm MK from war form.

ME TOO. The way MK being a monkey has been playing out is so thematically delicious for MK as a character. IT'S GOT IT ALL. His identity being literally shattered, all roads leading "to pain", being "just like Wukong", his self-worth being lower than it's ever been—as an MK fan, it does not get any better than this let me tell you.

I've discussed here and here why I think MK's creation is 100% Wukong's doing (or at the least partly his doing) and that he knew about MK's origins the whole time, but dear anon, you and I agree that Wukong will have his good mentor moment.

The end of 3x14 was a good start, but Wukong has hurt MK, and this is something MK has never confronted/discussed with Wukong himself. Mei did so on his behalf in 3x10, and Curse MK did so in 4x07, but we haven't had MK really and truly express himself to Monkey King directly (more on that later). So now we've had 4 seasons and 3 specials worth of building and unresolved tension, and you can see MK's hurt bubbling beneath the surface.

In the Revenge of the Spider Queen special, Sun Wukong unknowingly made MK feel like he couldn't help. Like he "couldn't do anything on his own". He—in a way—abandoned MK at the beginning of s2, "leaving him to figure out everything on his own". He wasn't honest or upfront to MK or the rest of the gang about his half-formed plan to defeat the Lady Bone Demon. Honestly, even expecting MK to face Demon Bull King on his own was...a debatable choice. Yes, fighting demons just like that was how Sun Wukong learned (it also being what he did in JTTW), but that doesn't mean that's what MK needs. Plenty of characters have pointed out that Wukong is a terrible mentor (Macaque in 2x07, Pigsy in 2x10, Mei in 3x10, SWK himself in 3x14), and I'm inclined to agree.

This isn't to say that Wukong doesn't already have any good mentor moments, or that he doesn't care about and love MK (he truly does), but he's flawed. Wukong's choices and mistakes have affected MK, and now MK doesn't want to hurt the people he loves in the same way Wukong has hurt him:

Curse MK: "We’re just like Wukong. A fraud! A trickster! Destructive! Why would our legacy be any different? Actually, no no- the chaos and destruction we’ll bring upon the world will make Wukong’s past look like nothing."

(4x07 Pitiful Creatures)

MK: “And the most messed up thing is, I- I never even realized, never even questioned who I am, or where I come from, or why, or- Until I know what I am, what my destiny is? I can’t risk hurting the people I care about—the one’s I have left.”

(4x08 The Brotherhood)

And oh, is it BEAUTIFUL irony. The 4x08 scene I listed above is a direct parallel to SWK in 3x10. MK, in one sense, doesn't know anything about himself, yet he knows everything he needs to: he's exactly like Wukong, fated to "hurt the people who care about [him] the most". After all, that's exactly what just happened. MK, desperate to save Monkey King from Azure Lion, gave into his anger and frustration and went full on monkey demon. His goal was to free his beloved mentor from his prison, yet it only led to Wukong's scroll piece getting sliced in half.

And so, motivated by fear, MK in 4x08 does the exact same thing Wukong does to him at the end of 3x10: MK runs off, MK leaves (JUST like he does in 2x05, 2x10, and the entirety of s3). This causes the people who care about him to worry, inadvertently hurting them in the process. And, oh, is it SO GOOD. LBD was right, there is no running, destiny will always catch up.

MK ran away because he didn't want to hurt anyone more, which is the exact reason Wukong ran away at the end of s3 and even disappeared for hundreds of years:

MK: "*sigh* You think Monkey King ever felt like this? Maybe that's why he stayed up on this mountain, just having a good time with you guys. You know cause- cause he knew he'd be out of the way where he couldn't hurt anyone he cared about." (4x09 Roast of the Monkie Kids)

Wukong wanted to stop hurting MK, to keep him out of his fights, so he ran away from MK and towards his own demise. Doing things alone has never worked out for anyone in this show, and ultimately, Wukong only ended up hurting MK more. It's tragedy at it's finest.

If you'd like another punch in the gut, this 4x01 scene is particularly great for doing that:

MK, staring into his reflection, compares himself to Monkey King—seeing every bad trait in himself and none of the good. "We're just like Wukong." MK believes he's a fraud, tricking all the good in his life into being there.

Curse MK: "You can see it, can't you? This is your fate. Your friends will turn on you, seeing you for the monster you will become. They will destroy you, harbinger of chaos. It's just like the Lady Bone Demon said—despite your efforts, all you'll ever do is cause pain and suffering." (4x07 Pitiful Creatures)

So, let's finally go back to MK having never confronted Wukong.

There are already plenty of reasons for MK to feel hurt, but now we've only added to the pile with MK's past, and how Monkey King hid it from him. The end of 4x08 already parallels 3x10 in so many lovely ways, however, I believe we are due for a second 3x10 parallel.

Mei: "You knew. All along you knew I had this THING inside of me. And you hid it from ALL of us! Why? What were you afraid of, that you were going to have to TEAR me apart to get your precious Samadhi fire!?" (3x10 The Samadhi Fire)

This scene alone is paralleled to with MK and Curse MK in 4x07. It's another piece of evidence for the fact that Sun Wukong definitely knew about MK, but it's ALSO evidence for MK finally confronting Wukong after the truth comes out. Just like Monkey King knew about the ring inside Mei, he also knew about MK. Just like Mei snapped and revealed all of her pent up anger towards Sun Wukong, MK will do the same thing.

I don't particularly know what war form is, but I have heard a cry in my notes of people like me who want to see MK go berserk, and I am hear to provide evidence for those people of that likely happening. Let's look at the couple of times we've already seen MK flicker into monkey demon form:

MK's cracking the ground around him, he's flickering, he's even catching some of his friends in the sheer force he's emanating. When MK becomes a Monkey Demon, it's never treated as a good thing narrative-wise. The first time MK fully enters this form it's at the end of 4x07 when he defeats the curse, which then directly causes Wukong to become trapped in the scroll and Azure to free Peng and Yellowtusk. The next time MK goes full on Monkey Wukong's scroll piece get's cut in two. Both times, MK doesn't feel in total control.

In fact, MK choosing NOT to indulge in his monkey demon form is met with much more success:

Macaque: "You don’t want to fight Azure because people might get hurt, you don’t want to not fight him because people might get hurt--so do something else! Only you get to decide who you are kiddo." (4x10 The Jade Emperor)

And then that's what MK does, he chooses not to fight and instead steals back Wukong's scroll piece. His choice to save and protect the people he cares about rather than to fight back is the right one—he even runs away with his loved ones rather than without them. But even then, MK has to choose to resist his Monkey form:

It's all very in line with "harbinger of chaos" and how we could ever get to a point his friends would ever turn on him.

At the end of 3x10, Mei herself goes out of control—but MK refuses to let her go or abandon her. Instead he runs directly towards the fire, reaching for his friend, successfully bringing Mei back to herself. I 100% believe that Mei will do the same thing for MK. At the end of 4x08, we even see her start to make that same reach:

But MK leaves before she's able to.

This makes me think it will happen later, and that we'll get to hear her say "We can figure this out together!", as done previously many times.

I imagine it playing out something like this: MK goes into SWK's scroll piece to fix it from the inside, going through Wukong's memories along the way. MK comes across Wukong's memory of his creation—this is when things take a turn for the worse, as MK slips into Monkey Demon form and confronts the real Wukong about it (this scene would be a lovely parallel to 3x10 and Samadhi fire Mei). Wukong—meaning well—says the wrong things/reveals information that only makes everything worse. This pushes MK to go fully berserk and instigates the Sun Wukong V MK fight of my dreams. Their fight causes the two to break out of the scroll, giving Mei the opportunity to calm MK down.

Wukong being Wukong, is going to want to make it up to MK. With everything now out in the open, I think he's going to be able to do exactly that, and we'll get our good mentor moment.

Leona: Hm…?

Leona: So loud. What's all that noise?

Ruggie: Ah, Leona-san! We've got trouble.

Jack: The tsums have suddenly stopped listening to us, so it's a bit chaotic.

Leona: The tsums, as in more than one…?

Epel: Where are you going, tsum? We need to hurry and go back to Pomefiore!

Floyd: Hey, what're you trying to do? I'm starting to get pissed off… You want me to squeeze ya?

Epel: Come on, let's go… Urgh! I'm pulling it as hard as I can, but it's latching onto the lawn and isn't letting go.

Jack: No matter how many times I try to grab it and bring it back with me, it keeps escaping out of my arms.

Leona: When there's a ton of small creatures running around underfoot like this, makes me think of the bugs that slither around under a fallen tree.

Leona: What do they want?

Jack: No idea… My tsum is just running around out of control too, so I really don't know.

Jack: Since the Headmaster told us to take care of them, it's not like we can just leave them be. So we're at a bit of a loss.

Leona: What, 's there something you wanna say?

Leona: …Okay, I get it.

Leona: Hey, try to stack up those annoying armadillo-lookin' things up.

Ruggie: Stack 'em? What's up, Leona-san? Why're you saying something so silly with such a serious look?

Jack: Stack them? …Oh, I see!

Tsum… Tsum…

Ruggie: The tsums all calmed down…?

Epel: Ohhh. They just wanted to be tsum'd.

Sebek: IF THAT'S WHAT THEY WANTED, THEY SHOULD HAVE SAID SO EARLIER!

Ruggie: Tsum'd!? What is that? What does that mean!?

Leona: How should I know? Lookin' at the way they're acting, maybe it's just something they like to do.

Jack: Yeah, that's it. Back when we first met these guys, they also stacked up like this too.

Jack: That's why the Headmaster decided to call them "tsums," I completely forgot about that.

Jack: Wait… I don't think I told you how they got their name, did I?

Leona: Nope, you didn't. But…

Leona: This thing was looking at me, and then looking up, then me again and was trying to tell me something, so I just thought that might be it.

Jack: That tsum seems to be lookin' down on us with that smug smile…

Ruggie: Leona-san's tsum's got a whole different personality from Jack-kun's tsum, huh.

Cater: The stacked tsums look like they're all happy together now. Guess they feel relaxed in this position.

Cater: Hey, Leonatsum, you don't wanna be tsum'd with them?

Jack: So it's not interested in stacking with the others, huh. It's pretty composed.

Epel: It's got poise, confidence, and it's so mature…! It's just like Leona-san to have a cool tsum.

Leona: Humph… Hey, tsum. Your advice earlier wasn't so bad, I guess.

Leona: And unlike those other armadillo-lookin' things, you're pretty easy to deal with. Guess you're more composed 'cause you're like me, yeah?

Leona: …Hm?

Jack: I-It's sleeping.

Ruggie: Y'know, maybe it's not that this tsum is "composed" or anything… But more like it's just got no motivation at all?

⚜ — a study in knightgirlisms; the jean gender (jeander) analysis.

                                nobody asked but i am answering anyway.

this is entirely a self indulgent word vomit, but for some context: i have been diseased about jean for a really really long time. of course throughout the years my interest in genshin has had its ups and downs, so in starting gnostic hymns and revisiting my oldest and dearest fav, a lot of old headcanons and thoughts are resurfacing.

since i now have an outlet to voice them: welcome to my completely disorganized ramble about jean gunnhildr being just a girl.

For what is literally the oldest clan in Mondstadt, the actual information we have on the Gunnhildr clan itself doesn't detail any more than two (2) of its leaders since earning its name.

The first, its namesake, Gunnhildr. The second? Jean.

We actually never have it specified why or how Jean has been chosen as its successor, just that her mother has raised her to be. Reasonably, one would assume that her mother had been its leader based on such, but then even that isn't outright stated. All you get to know about Frederica Gunnhildr is that she's a knight of the clan. Awesome. We literally don't even know what being leader of the Gunnhildr clan means in present times.

And you can't exactly correlate the status of successor to the (seemingly entirely separate) title of Dandelion/Lion Fang Knight that was given to Jean at age fifteen, as it has literally nothing to do with the Gunnhildrs at all and was also given to her after she would have been declared the clan's successor.

I would like to believe that the Gunnhildr clan's leaders have been predominantly female, but then again I couldn't really tell you. They have existed for three thousand years so only having two names doesn't prove much of anything.

The biggest takeaway, at least, is that Jean's entire life has been focused upon becoming a knight. From day one she has known that protecting Mondstadt would be her purpose, and has carried the weight of countless responsibilities and expectations. Regardless of the gender of those who she was surrounded by, Jean never really had a chance to care for much other than her future. Trivial things that would be considered traditionally feminine just didn't matter as much.

To top it off, we know Jean to have been childhood friends with Diluc (as well as Kaeya by association though I actually cannot recall if that relationship is every explicitly mentioned in canon) which I personally think would only aid in her disinterest in femininity. Who needs to care about dresses and makeup when you can chase your friend around with a stick or whatever.

So now you're thinking "Lina what the fuck does this have to do with right now" and that's a really fair question so here's the part of the essay that is actually the whole point of why we are here.

I think, to put it plainly, Jean's relationship with gender (specifically femininity) is complicated. It plays a very small role in the world as she views it. However I believe that the part of Jean that does perceive it wishes to be more in touch with it.

It's an absent kind of thing-- she didn't have the time for it as a child and she certainly doesn't have the time for it now-- but I believe it to be there in a couple of things. The most specific being her affinity for romance.

This is the part of the post where I look you in the face and tell you that Hoyoverse sucks and is wrong and I am about to entirely undermine a single sentence of their stupid fucking lore.

From Character story 5:

Master Jean has yet another secret. No matter how many times she has read the historical classics, despite her title of Dandelion Knight, and though she has become the Acting Grand Master whom everyone relies on... Jean still loves romance novels. This is not for the years as a young girl that she missed amid her training and duties, or due to the rift that formed in her parents' marriage. Jean simply yearns for the mutual attraction spoken of in such stories, for those emotions as subtle and fragile as spider-silk. As a knight, she must put Mondstadt and the Knights of Favonius first. But...

I'M SORRY?

Be so for real right now. What. Like. What. Huh. Wh.

So basically this entire post was to come down to this one line and tell you all in a very loud TED Talk sort of way that I don't know what the fuck Hoyo is trying to say by declaring neither of those things to have ANY relation to this interest, but that I disagree. I think it makes perfect sense for a woman who was denied girlhood to have wistful thoughts of romance like in the books. I feel it seems ridiculously out of place as a part of her character without that context, in fact.

Fuck this noise. Anyhow.

Her summer skin in game also has quite the flowery description, as follows:

The Acting Grand Master's life runs like the gears of a machine, driven by the great force of heavy responsibility, constantly being ground down by work. Over time, the armor of chivalry has become like Jean's second skin, the presentation of proper dress code and a formal image becoming ever more firmly forged into her nature. But in truth, Jean is no older than the ordinary young women around her. In the novels that these young ladies enjoy, gorgeous gowns are as quintessential as sun, moon, and starlight themselves, and some opulent noble scions do indeed sit pretty in dresses that sprawl out like palaces, their hem-lines and long skirts intertwined like the lapping waves of the sea. Perhaps Jean once had such romantic aspirations too. After all, who has never hankered after the blissful beauty of luxury?

Which I think, when tied in with the knowledge of her love for those novels, highlights an interest in more than just the relationships within them.

(Also this outfit having been a shared effort by just about every friend of hers within Mondstadt, I can't help but assume that the way she seems to covet the idea of being Just A Girl is something that those close to her have picked up on. Especially Barabara, Amber, and Lisa.)

So, at the end of it all, I offer you my silly little knight who (whether hoyo agrees or not) has some internalized self image things to work out that she never will because she's literally this tweet.

Me and Nancy had to sit through the little nuggets speech so now st*ve should have to sit through Nancy's speech of why he left her during her darkest time. Why he ignored her trauma. Why he thinks it's okay to tell her this when she's with Jonathan.

Robin should be there. And Nancy should look at Robin, the most painful tears and disgust in her eyes "do you even know why we broke up. Did he tell you?"

Enough time has not gone by for the writers to act like this girl isn't still crying regularly over losing her best friend. (And yall know she still blames herself😭)

Nancy felt her skin crawl as Steve told her his dream of her having his six kids, how they would end up exactly like her parents in a loveless relationship in that cul-de-sac on the corner. She wanted to run, hide somewhere so far away that she could forget about Steve and his nightmare of a dream, she wants to forget that this conversation ever existed in the first place that Steve still dreamed about her.

But there was Robin, Robin who somehow always knew how to save her from awkward situations where she wasn't in control. And she pushed away the whole conversation with Steve, pushed it far back into her mind and locked it in a box hoping that the key is lost somewhere in the ocean of her mind never to be found again. There were more important things to think about like killing Henry Creel once and for all.

——4 days after the fight——

Somehow in the middle of the world ending the party still wanted a movie night hosted generously by the Wheelers basement, and as the only one with a car Nancy had to get the movie, but for the past eight minutes she's been sitting here in the Family Video parking lot hyping herself up so she could walk in and face Steve. She hasn't seen much of him since the final battle and whenever she did she made sure to keep their interactions short but now going into where Steve works was like walking into a lion's den. Seven more minutes passed before she left her car and made her way to the front entrance, the glass doors revealing Steve and Robin inside lounging around the counter as a movie played on the tv behind them.

The bell above the door rang as Nancy slipped in hastily making her way to the sci-fi section without muttering out a hello. In and out that's all she needed to remind herself, go in, pick a movie, pay to Robin and leave, and all without interacting with Steve. But nothing went to plan as heavy steps came up too loud and close to her making her panic as she hazardously skimmed through grabbing a random movie and moving around the one half on the store to the cash register. Nancy watched as Robin gave a confused glance to her side thinking Steve would be with her.

"Hey Nance...you getting a movie for the kids tonight? Because I never took you for someone who would watch 'Back To The Future'" Robin's rambling was a welcomed sound to Nancy's all too tense body. She let her shoulders drop from her ears and unclenched her jaw letting her body relax before speaking.

"Yeah, who would've thought that even as the world is ending the kids really are just kids." Nancy suddenly remembers that even though her brother and his friends are in high school they lost four years of their childhood to this, El never had a childhood to begin with. Nancy looked at Robin and suddenly she saw the worry lines, the deep purple circles under her eyes that were a stark contrast to the sickly pale skin on Robin's face, the jagged pink lines and dark purple and yellow bruises from where vines tried to kill the girl. They all were too young to have known and dealt with this. And as Robin opened her mouth a worried look passed her eyes as she looked at Nancy. The same heavy steps from before were coming up to her and Nancy's body went ridge.

"Nance," A shiver of disgust racked her body as she turned around unwillingly to see Steve too close to her with a soft smile and even softer eyes, "I hope you're not avoiding me, because that would make everything really weird." Steve didn't seem to notice or he was just ignorant to how Nancy was reacting to him being around her. A retort of "It's already been weird when you told me you dreamed about me carrying your six children and traveling in a Winnebago." but all she could manage was an awkward chuckle.

"Hey Nance, you're all checked out so you can go, the movie is on the house." Nancy could kiss Robin for her impeccable timing as she once again saved Nancy from getting second hand embarrassment from Steve.

"Thanks Robbie." Nancy watched as a light dusting of pink found its way onto Robin's cheeks from the nickname, but as her hand reached for the bag it was suddenly taken out of Robin's hand and into Steve's.

"Robin, hold down the fort I'm going to walk Nancy to her car." Steve looked so happy with himself as the white bag with the Family Video logo on the side, that Nancy wanted to smack out of his hand so much.

"No Steve, it's okay, I can walk to my car by myself." Nancy had to physically bite her tongue from saying anything more, a metallic taste filled her mouth from the force of the bite.

"No, no, Nance, what kind of gentleman would I be if I didn't walk you to your car." Nancy couldn't stop the eye roll that would probably give her a headache later, could Steve really not take the hint. Nancy lunged for the bag but Steve moved it above his head making Nancy run into his chest making it easier for him to slip his arm around her waist to 'steady' her. In an instant Nancy was thrashing against Steve, not fighting for too long as Steve let go with a hurt expression settling on his face.

"Seriously Steve, give Nancy the bag." Robin's sudden intervention let Nancy take a breath as Steve took his gaze off her and onto Robin who moved to the two of them.

"Come on Robin Nancy doesn't mind, it's just how she flirts with me all hit and cold." If Nancy could get whiplash from that sentence she would have suffered severely. Steve spoke so confidently that Nancy was flirting with him that bile rose up Nancy's throat before she swallowed, feeling the burning after taste.

"Steve I am not flirting with you nor have I ever since we broke up." Nancy felt suffocated under Steve's look of confusion and hurt all on his face.

"But I thought you shared my dream?" And god Nancy was about to really punch Steve Harrington.

"Steve I never said I shared your dream, in fact I actually hate your dream Steve it's my own personal nightmare. Everything about it makes me feel like I'm always going to be stuck here, forced to be what everyone expects me to be just how you expected me to be okay after barely a month after Barb's death." Nancy couldn't stop herself as words tumbled out of her mouth, a fire burned brightly behind her eyes, and Steve had the audacity to look wounded.

"Come on Nance I've changed, you've changed. You got over Barb's death, I'm not a douche bag and you can't deny that you weren't obviously flirting with me over spring break." Steve's words burned Nancy like hell fire.

"No Steve, I never did get over my best friend's death. But how would you know that when all you wanted to do was forget about everything as if Will wasn't traumatized, as if I didn't lose someone close to me...you were so eager to just forget-" Nancy's throat closed up on her as tears stung at her eyes and fell down her cheeks leaving wet trails. Her gaze lands on Robin who looks shocked standing there letting her eyes flicker from the two of them. "Do you even know why we broke up? Did he tell you how when Barb went missing all he cared about was to not let his dad find out he was drinking. He couldn't even act as if he cared even a little bit, and when Jonathan stayed over after I saw the demogorgon he decided that instead of talking to me I deserved to be shamed publicly as a slut. I broke down crying in the Holland's bathroom and when I left you didn't even fucking ask me anything, even a stupid fucking 'are you okay?' nothing, you never cared about how I felt, you never did because it was all about you. I suffered, I had to live with the fact that my best friend is dead and I was the reason she died because I tried so hard to be your perfect girlfriend. I tried killing myself Steve, I tried to reach out to you but all you wanted was to pretend like nothing happened and I was so fucking stupid to have tried to pretend like you that I wasn't sleeping because of nightmares, that the scars lining my thighs aren't self made, that I didn't put my gun to my head because I deserved her same faith. We were toxic Steve, we were never good for each other. And after years and you claiming you've changed it's not true. Because your fucked up dream is all about you, I don't want to make six kids and live with an atomic family and you would have known that if you but some effort and listened or talked to me but you never did. And for Christ's sake Steve I'm with Jonathan, I'm dating someone and you think I would have flirted with you. Maybe if you looked past your fucking hair you would see how uncomfortable I've been, how anything you took as flirting was just me being concerned because if you haven't fucking noticed THE WORLD IS FUCKING ENDING." Nancy was hysterical by the time she finished, tears fell faster from her eyes as a lump in her throat kept her from speaking anymore. Steve's face was unreadable as she stared at the ground unable to make eye contact with Nancy but Robin, she was looking at Nancy like she was fragile glass. The hurt and concern in Robin's eyes made Nancy feel exposed so she did the one thing she does best, Nancy ran. Out the story and into her car starting it and diving away with blurry vision.

Nancy came back red eyed and without a movie for the kids, really teens, downstairs. Mike didn't even have the heart to banter with his sister when he saw the state she was in. She was now laying in her bed in sweats and an oversized hoodie Robin gave her after being vecna'd with a plush highland cow pressed tightly to her chest. Nancy hated the fact that she had an outburst in Family Video and now she had a headache from crying which made her just want to sleep till her body had no more fight left in it. A knock at her door made her sit up causing her headache to worsen from her quick movement.

"It's open." Her voice came out hoarse as she waited under the covers for whoever to come in. Nancy wasn't expecting Robin of all people to have come in with a bag in her hand. She instantly moved over to Nancy placing the back on the bed before plopping herself next to it.

"Okay so I'm not sure if you want to talk about what happened and if you don't that's completely fine with me but if you do I'll listen. I stopped by a 7/11 on my way here so I have gatorade, skittles, heresy's, some sour candy and mozzarella sticks. I'm not sure which one would give you more comfort so I just grabbed everything. Drink some of the gatorade first because crying dehydrates you and you would probably lose nutrients from that, then the mozzarella sticks because I'm worried you haven't eaten anything yet today and then we can cuddle if you want and eat comfort food. And I want to apologize, I never knew the whole story between you and Steve and I should have talked to you before saying stupid remarks like old flames being snuffed out, but I will try my hardest to make sure I'm there for you. I will always have time for you Nance." Robin's speech made Nancy start sobbing again, never has she gotten this much love and understanding from anyone. Robin was holding her in a matter of seconds letting Nancy burrow her head into Robin's chest as the plush got trapped between the two of them.

"Thank you, so much Robin." Nancy's voice was barely heard but Robin could tell what Nancy muttered against her.

"Always, belle, always." Robin spoke back into Nancy's hair as her fingers gently combed through the curls.

Why Bruno is a wonderful character and why I love him so much? - A Bruno Madrigal analysis

OK so originally this was a dissertation about Bruno and why I love him for a Discord server, but in the time it took me to translate, many months passed and I now understand way more my love for him than I did at the time. So we can say it’s a translation of this dissertation but not really. It is now more of a big whole analysis of this character I love. A less messy like it was months ago too, easier to read and...When rereading it I see many English mistakes OMG...They’ll be fixed when it’s  posted though, phew!

Here we go!

Beforehand

In the RiordanVerse, which includes Percy Jackson, Heroes of Olympus, The trials of Apollo and the spin-offs Kane Chronicles and Magnus Chase, my favorite character is Leo Valdez. Leo Valdez is a Hispanic character, son of Hephaistus, who plays the role of the jokester and the third wheel of the group in HOO. He ended up getting a girlfriend during the 4th volume though. Of course, Leo is actually more than that since he's at the same time the one meant to make people laugh, and the one who suffers in silence because of his status as a third wheel and a jokester. 

In the movie Encanto, the character who has the closest personality to Leo's is Camilo Madrigal. Logically then, Camilo should have been my favorite. Well, he almost was! I even had my eyes on him when I first watched the movie, a part of me already loving him. He was really about to become my favorite character in the movie when appeared...

Bruno Madrigal

Well, I'm in love with Bruno! But that's not the point here since there are other reasons why he's my favorite. And I’m going to explain them to you!

Bruno as an assumed villain

The villain treatment

First of all, I'll talk about what is a part in making him the best character in the movie: Bruno isn't a villain but is treated as one by the movie.

During the first half of the movie, Bruno has the same kind of treatment as Shere Khan, Rasputin or even Voldemort. You can actually make parallels between him and these villains! 

We don't talk about Bruno = He Who Must Not Be Named

Concretely, the first thing to notice about it is how in the very first song of the movie, the first thing we say about Bruno is "We don't talk about Bruno". If you do, you'll upset people. It weirdly reminds us of Voldemort and him being "You-Know-Who" (also called He Who Must Not Be Named) because we don't say his name. We call Voldemort “You-know-who”/“He Who Must Not Be Named” and when you evoke Bruno people reply “We don’t talk about Bruno”. It’s not exactly the same thing but it’s close enough. 

That way to evoke Bruno though can remind you of Shere Khan, whose name is pronounced a lot in the movie for him to only appear near the end and being way worse than we thought. Like Bruno, who appears really late on screen, in the middle of the movie actually, but whose name is pronounced pretty often. 

One of the biggest villain details about him, however, is his color.

You obviously noticed that he's associated with the color green, which is a color extremely associated with villains, making it the color of evil. I think about Maleficent or Rasputin, for example, who wear dark clothes but whose magic is green like Bruno's. Same for The Evil Queen in Snow White, who puts the red apple in a green mixture. On top of that, not only Bruno's magic is green, but when Camilo talks about him in the song “We Don't Talk About Bruno”, there is a green light all around him and Mirabel, making it all the more worrying. Like Scar from The Lion King in his own villain song.

One last thing that causes him to be treated as a villain : The song “We Don't Talk About Bruno”. Not only Camilo describes him as a monster, scary and dangerous, but most of the song is only negative about him, making us feel that he makes the future happen rather than merely announcing it...I mean..."Your fate is sealed when your prophecy is read"....It’s like they’re saying that if he didn't announce it, it wouldn't have happened. The only exceptions are Isabela, who is the only one to speak about a positive prophecy, and Dolores who, in her first part, talks about how she grew to live in fear of Bruno but explains later in that part that his prophecies are misunderstood. A big hint on how, maybe, he isn't much of a villain that the song wants us to believe.

His pictures

To add on top of it, each flashback or picture we have of him shows him with his hood hiding his eyes, or frowning and not looking very sympathetic. He smirks on his door though but it’s barely visible. 

All of that before we finally meet him and discover he actually isn't what we thought he would be (though I met people who understood immediately it was only baloney).

Bruno isn't actually a villain

And here is me announcing the moment to talk about why I love Bruno that much, with my whole soul and heart!

First thing first I’ll talk about how he can be pretty blunt and honest.

I mean, we sometimes saw him lie, like when he’s saying he didn’t leave because the mountains are pretty tall, but otherwise he’s a pretty blunt and honest man. I think for example about when Mirabel falls into the chasm and he catches her before telling her, “You’re very sweaty”. I mean, it’s true, we saw it earlier, but was it really the right time to tell her that? I can understand though, I can sometimes be pretty blunt like that too, but it clearly wasn’t necessary. That’s cute though, I like it! 

If I can elaborate on it and give my view about that point, I could even say him being blunt precipitated his bad reputation. I can see him giving the visions with nervosity but not sugarcoating them! 

Then, Bruno can also be very clumsy! 

I don’t only mean he’s clumsy like when he’s fleeing Mirabel and almost falls when jumping from plank to plank. Or when he fetched a horse to come save Mirabel but is struggling handling it, which is so adorable! No, I also talk about when he can hurt others without intending to. 

I’m thinking typically about the events at Pepa’s marriage, where he tried to make a joke and it made his sister think it was a prophecy. She was already pretty nervous, but that joke made the rain fall on her wedding day because of how terrible it made her feel. Of course, Bruno wasn’t ill-intended, he only was trying to put her more at ease, as he said in  “All Of You” when he sang “I could just see you were sweating”, but intention matters less than the results. There, the result is that he hurt his sister. Which must have made him feel very bad too, if I know him well. This is probably why he probably never apologized until the end of the movie.

But I love that part of him too! I think it is incredibly cute! And I would have loved to be there to hug him and reassure him about how it’s not completely his fault, that the context wasn't the best for that kind of joke and that Pepa was not the right person. Though I suspect she wasn't even holding it against him, she was more angry because he left and wanted a reason to hate him.

That point joins another part of him I like: He's nervous and anxious...Like me!

Oddly I always loved shy, nervous and anxious characters, like Sawako Kuronuma, from Kimi ni Todoke, or Shin-ah from Akatsuki no Yona. They have my whole heart and Bruno is the ultimate shy, nervous and anxious character! I just want to comfort him, tell him it'll be okay, help him overcome his nervosity and anxiety. Also, we can be anxious together! 

That aspect of his personality is mainly shown in his body language. During the movie, he’s often fiddling with his hands, with his ruana, chuckling nervously, or stuttering. He also has a way to look at people with his eyebrows going upwards in worry, as if expecting something to go wrong. 

Hell, even him being superstitious is part of his anxious side! He knocks on wood to bring good luck because he clearly doesn’t feel well when he can’t do it when he feels bad. You can even see him tapping his arm during the last song, just before the part where he’s rapping and apologizing to Pepa! Because he wants to bring good luck but doesn’t have wood to knock on! 

Also the way he laughs...You can feel the nervosity in his chuckles! Like when he’s trying to be funny with his Hernando/Jorge play and Mirabel only stares at him as if he said something weird. At that point you can feel he realised she didn’t find it funny and cringed. Poor Bruno.

Oh well it doesn't prevent him from actually being funny. He's a goofy character after all!

First...What the heck Mirabel??? His Hernando/Jorge play is hilarious! You just don't have any taste! Bad girl! Hernando and Jorge are the funniest characters and Bruno is the best actor of all time. He should do a stand-up show!

Then...I talked earlier about when he went to fetch a horse to go save Mirabel who actually wasn’t in danger. I’ll elaborate on it if you permit me too (you don’t have a choice anyway because that analysis will end before you can answer), in saying how interesting that scene is on a comedy lense. Starting with the way Bruno just arrives at the river struggling with the horse but managing to scream "Mirabel didn’t do anything wrong!" like a madman. Then, he literally falls before getting up spinning like a screwdriver all while yelling at his mother! That’s incredibly funny! 

Also, Bruno shows some sarcasm at some points. I think about when he’s afraid Mirabel will hate his vision and he’s repeating what was saying in the song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” to parodying it. I mean, you can feel what the three townspeople said, “He told me my fish would die the next day dead, he told me I’d grow a gut and just like he said, he said that all my hair would disappear now look at me,” and the whole Camilo verse “Seven foot frame, rats along his back, when he calls your name it all fades to black, yeah he sees your dreams and feast on your screams,” when Bruno says “Bruno makes bad things happen, oh, he’s creepy and his vision killed my goldfish.” Honestly I have a bad memory but first time I watched the movie I’m pretty sure I was like “Oops, guilty” because I believed everything said in the song.

Bruno is also kind and caring!

Bruno is a kind and caring man who, as a proof of this character trait, saved Mirabel during their chase. I remind you he was fleeing her! But he preferred saving his niece rather than staying away from her like he’d done the last 10 years. This is why he was fleeing and he probably didn’t expect her to try to jump the chasm. She did though, and pushed him to make a choice: continue to flee and protecting himself and his, probably with time, comfortable life in the walls, or turn back to save her. He made that last choice. Because it wouldn’t be logical to leave her to die while he hid to protect her, but also because he’s too nice to leave her behind. 

We can also see that part of him when we discover later why he left. The fact is that he left because he was afraid Mirabel was in danger of having a fate potentially worse than his. I mean, I know people who would have taken advantage of it to stop being the black sheep of the family. Some people prefer to be part of the accepted group, Bruno preferred staying the black sheep so Mirabel could live a good life. 

To go further into the topic of his kind and caring side, I’ll talk again about the river scene. Before that scene, in the movie, Bruno leaves to let Mirabel go see Isabela, making her tease him “You’re afraid Abuela will see you,” which he confirms. He’s afraid of his mother but, even with that detail, when he thinks Mirabel is in danger he doesn’t hesitate to hurry save her from that same mother. He does because he cares too much to just stay hidden near the ruins of his house while one member of his family, especially one he bounded a lot with, is in danger. The most incredible detail in that scene being he’s trying to pin the blame on himself rather than simply defending her like most people would have done. He’s so kind! I love him!

Another thing I love about him is linked to the joke he was fed with “respect woman juice”: he’s respectful!

There is something noticeable when viewing the movie during “All Of You”: at the moment Bruno’s part is starting, he doesn’t take Pepa’s hand. Instead, he holds his hand to her to take, before spinning around to bring her into Félix’s arms. It’s not much but that man knows consent!

I’m French, so in my country, before COVID, when you greet each other you have to kiss the other person on the cheek. It’s basically an automatism and, for people like me who don’t like being kissed on the cheek by anyone, it always has been annoying. You can even blame children for not wanting it, telling them to be a bit polite. Or, if you don’t kiss someone, they can think you are angry at them. No, I just don’t like kissing on the cheek. I’m telling you, since COVID I saw people being incredibly happy to not be obligated anymore to kiss people! 

Finally, Bruno is creative. 

Him being creative can be shown with his Hernando/Jorge show, of course. However, in a more subtle way, we can also see many drawings, mainly of rats, in his hideout. And not bad at all! Hell, the screen even zooms in on one of his drawings to make us cry with sadness when realising how he loves his family and could never let go. I’m obviously talking about the plate scene. It’s neither a real plate, nor a photo. He drew that! That man is an artist! 

People talked a lot about his telenovelas too, like I saw many (including myself) using that to make Bruno and a reader/OC bond. Because it's a good way to! Though it seems like people tend to forget Bruno doesn’t only write telenovelas, but also sports games, and game shows. This is proof of a big imagination too!  

In the end I think you can now understand how much I love him. That man is perfect in his imperfection, and perfect husband material! I mean, I love everything about him, his bad sides, like being too blunt, as well as his good ones, like being caring.

I know this is also why he’s overloved too: I’m not the only one who saw it in him, and many are in love with him or only have him as their favorite character. In my case, he’s both the one I’m in love with and my favorite.

The fact he started the movie by being kinda villainized adds to it too, because there is a contrast between how he’s seen in the first part and in the second one.

Every time I see stuff about Aliens Vs Predator Requiem I find myself more and more forgiving about its flaws and more inclined to consider it at a bare minimum a good movie, and one of the better Aliens or Predator movies. It's a bit like Alien 3, in that both movies are "rookie directors handed a plate of flaming garbage, manages to turn in competent finished product."

In the case of AVPR it has to work with the shitshow AVP1 and Alien 4 made out of both franchises altogether such as fucking up the continuity, demystifying all the interesting mysteries, and generally trashing most of the things that made either monster enjoyable in favor of, by all accounts, what those directors thought was cool. And the crazy thing is - it does that. It unfucks all the continuity stuff AVP1 messed up, it brings back everything good about the aliens that Alien 4 messed up, it returns the mystery back to the predators, it treats both monsters in the way earlier, better movies handled them which built them up so well. It even uses the rough plot outline of the original Aliens vs Predator comic series (which by the way pick that up if you want to see the best version neither movie accomplished) and lands the whole thing in a tidy 100 minutes.

If you want to get down into the gritty details, Alien 4 and AVP1 both treat their monsters as pretty generic killbeasts. Predators are just big world conquering "aliens built the pyramids" guys, aliens are just "oh scary monster make roar." They both are roughly equivalent to a lion in terms of how divorced from our world they behave, which is a thing that can be made scary but isn't what's at the core of either monster. There's a lot in both of them, but Alien has a mix of the terror of the unknown (it has no eyes, it's hard to see, it takes you away and does things, it takes your body from you and does things inside where you can't see), while Predator has something of the mixture of culture shock (this is a thing that is intelligent like you, but doesn't see the world like you, you think you are the biggest and most dangerous but are not, it can make mistakes and you know what it wants but you will never fully understand its behavior). Alien is the strange place, Predator is the strange person.

That's what AVPR delivers. It does it exactly right, giving the audience All Predator sequence, All Alien sequence, and All Human sequence. The human sequence encounters the unknown Alien sequence. The Predator is the Stranger who lands in the middle of an honest to goodness romantic comedy movie that never gets a chance to start. Our two main protagonists aren't even on the board until after the full Alien-Human-Predator stories finish intersecting. That's solid storytelling and it's all in the first ten minutes.

If that's not enough, it also delivers far more properly practical effects than either Alien 4 or AVP1, it goes far over the top in terms of being gruesome and visceral (which works for me insofar as it kept me in genuine suspense over who would survive), and it delivers multiple instances of what we want (Aliens and Predator beating the shit out of each other). It even concludes with a little beat that nods to the original comic, suggesting some day that story may get a screen adaptation (it won't). Yes, it also very much just slaps together some plot segments of Predator and Aliens as well, and if it was trying to be a better movie than that I would call that a failing. But it isn't, it's trying to deliver something that feels like both movies put together, and do it with both arms tied behind its back. It had to do a lot to salvage those creatures, and instead it went above and beyond, pushed itself to make a movie that was more than a basic plot. And it was okay, in the end. Just okay in a miraculous way.

I love a movie that somehow manages to stick any kind of landing against the odds. Movies with stupid ideas that get done ridiculously well, movies getting buried under production company marketing crap that accomplish something interesting, but get written off anyway. Guys where the good stuff is hidden but there, so I just kinda love Aliens vs Predator Requiem because to everyone else it's either a "wohoo exciting AVP action ride" or "Another stupid cash grab" but it's neither, it's some guys that landed a plane after the wings fell off, and it wasn't pretty, but it was still impressive. If only it wasn't so damn dark the whole way through.

Wow, like I said before, Miguel is very unpredictable, I was thinking at that point he would go straight to killing Emily instead of "come home, amor", which is a good thing. But I think that would make things more "spicy" to what's going to happen next, for me it really looked like she felt a lot for her sister so I'm curious to know if she's really going back to Miguel or would go full revenge mode/keep running. Also very excited to know how Miguel is going to deal now that he know the truth

he is unpredictable in a large number of things but in some aspects he really isn't. at all. Miguel Galindo is exactly who he has always been, in my opinion anyway. I predicted he would do anything to get his son back, and he did. getting Cristobal back meant getting rid of Erin, that's what he did without hesitation. I also said Miguel would call Emily with Erin's phone and let her know about her sister, he also did that. he didn't even have to put it in words, him having his son and the phone to begin with could lead to only one conclusion for Emily. okay, he could have visited her but even if he still wants her dead now, he would never make it obvious and go right ahead to just killing her. the obvious, straight ways are for his enemies. he wants his enemies to be afraid of him. he wants to see the terror in their eyes when they realize they are about to die. that's the business man, the monstrous side in him.

but when it's about family or someone close to him, Miguel is sneaky. always. he makes them feel safe first and for as long as possible. when he tried to kill Emily before, she didn't even know she was in danger until it was too late. it was like that with the strangulation during sex, as well as in the bathtub. he staged a whole romantic evening for her, he laughed with her, he gave her a foot massage, they had wine. she felt safe and loved, while Miguel had only one goal the entire evening. hell, even with Devante it was like that. and Paco. he lured them in and made them feel safe for a while. until he revealed himself and they realized too late they were anything but safe.

so yes, Miguel calling Emily to ask her to come home makes total sense to me. we don't know if he is sincere and truly wants her back or if it's yet another ploy to get her where he wants her to be before he reveals himself once more. although the EW article says Emily has no other choice but to come back for her son, I stand by my word that their marriage is over. Miguel knows it, Emily knows it, we all know it. she will however do anything for Cristobal, just like Miguel did, so she will go back into the lion's den fully knowing she will probably never be safe again.

Did you know, when Hopes was just nothing but trailers, I actually thought Dimitri would join forces with Edgeguard. It's going to be up to Claude to save the Church and Fodlan from them. D1m1gard Team Up has so much more build up from the story because they had history. They are stepsiblings! Why the devs didn't take advantage of that, I would never know. Instead of allowing Claude shine, they threw him and Almyra under the bus.

Tbh that's a totally new one I've heard. Most people thought it was going to be a golden route, but I never expected everyone to be on the same side because the devs previously said it would never happen.

The thing is even though Dimtiri cared about Edelgard, I think even that only goes so far (in that he can't agree with what she does). There's definitely more possibility between them that we could've gotten though, but I guess maybe for AG they wanted to focus less on Edelgard since AM did a lot of that and give us more insight into Duscur.

I guess the reason they didn't go so much into Dimitri and Edelgard's relationship is because there isn't too much new content to explore. There are things they could've done with them in the present, but like I said, since they focused a lot of AM on them I can see why there's a change in AG. Also, AG is more fulfilling imo as a character arc in a way?

Even though the war ends in AM, such a huge part of Dimitri's backstory gets left unfinished. Only his relationship with Edelgard gets closure, but there's a such big hole in the overall Lions' story. AG kind of tells the other side of things that we didn't get in AM, so it's kinda like each story had more of one thing than the other and both of them complete the whole story. It's unfortunate that we have to play two different games to get a "complete" story where everything is answered and settled, but I guess combining the two is really the most fulfilling thing we'll get lol. It just sucks that the real story for Dimitri and the other Lions is basically incomplete because the real story didn't address so many things the characters wanted to address. I guess it's possible we could just say "oh, they figured all that post game" or something, but that feels like what CF went through with TWS. OTL

Meanwhile poor Claude got thrown under the bus again. I was really hoping for a lot more stuff about his background. Apparently they wanted to use Shahid in Houses but they couldn't make for him, so he ended up in Hopes instead? Which like, that's fine, I just wish they went more into detail about their relationship and exactly why Shahid hated Claude so much. Hell, we should've seen more of his siblings seeing as he apparently had a good bunch of them...

Focusing on just Fodlan just feels weird to me, when it comes to Claude's story. You'd think they'd do something more like half about Fodlan and half about Almyra to address his story both where he grew up and where he is now, but we just get minimal content about Almyra. In a way it's also a little awkward, because when you think about it... Shahid was planned for Houses but didn't make the cut, and yet he died in Hopes... so... wouldn't he still technically be alive in Houses? How does Claude becoming king work with Shahid still alive in Houses? How does Claude becoming Leicester's king in Hopes even work or make sense when he's supposed to be Almyra's king?

I feel like Claude just got the big ol' writing yikes in both games. Dimitri's story was very thorough in both games, because even if they did kinda only half complete certain aspects of a whole, full story in each respective game, they at least went in depth and delved very deeply into the parts of the story we did get. In CF we more or less got everything for Edelgard except the TWS battle which they made up for in Hopes, and since the devs consider her overall happier in SB, she still kinda walks out of both games having had a full story. With Claude they kind of just... give us some little crumbs about him and his homeland and then go right back to the Fodlan war.

Makes me sad because it feels like they just don't really care about Claude as much as the other two?

When will Claude's justice come back from the Fodlan war? :'(

i guess i can tell you but i’ll do it as vaguely as possible. basically, they struggle all of season 7 because they're stuck in the past [i can't remember the exact year rn, my bad] and once they finally fix the Waverider and are able to go home…they essentially get arrested by some sort of Time Police. it's frustrating ‘cause we see them struggle ALL season and once things are solved, this happens and then BOOM, the show’s canceled. so yeah, it was just supposed to be the start-point for Season 8 so no real harm done, it just sucks. i assume there was already a plan for Season 8 so if they would have known there wasn't going to be one, they could have wrapped off Season 7 in another way and given a real ending to the Legends. somehow, though, i feel like this ending fits them lmao.

I'm decently high tonight. It's been... well... I've been on the edge of anxiety the entire time, to be honest. I put on a Dan Corrigan video that he labeled like... "Nightmare Fuel for Skaters" or something, and my lame anxious self was like "oh great, it's 6 AM and you're gonna give yourself nightmares? What if this video has like... an injury in it. You're high, what if you start freaking out? What if. What if." And it never really took a hold. Like it's lurking just out of sight or something. Fear. And again... I'm afraid of fear.

It's like... ghosts. Like the way horror movies portray them, and how people interact with them. That's what I deal with at night when I'm high sometimes. Day too sometimes, but much more commonly during night. That atmosphere of a person at night in a ghost horror movie, even if the ghost isn't like... appearing... that tension, that jumping at a creak in the floorboards, that kinda shit, that's exactly what my nights have been like for... longer than I remember. They're not like this when I have someone around. I'm the brave one then, the logical one, the reassuring one . But when I'm alone...

There was some weird high pitched noise in the music I had on, so I switched it out. It was like a high pitched whistling sound or something, it was fucking with me. Talking about haunted house feelings for this long made me start thinking the sound was coming from somewhere else in the room. Anyway. So I had been on the edge of freaking out all night. And I started thinking at one point... and I know I've had this thought before recently... "wow, not everyone's brain does this when they get high, huh?" I mean... mine used to not do this too! And it made me a bit sad that my brain is like this now. That I am like this now. Because at the same time, I'm not. Most of the sub-personas that I have do not just look for worst case scenarios and just scan for threats the whole time. Especially when I'm high.

So this is kinda a new thing that feels like it's how it has always been. Maybe this is the kinda thing that mythologically, traditionally, spiritually, we have been referring to as like... demons or the Devil. Right? Like demons come out and play at night, right? At least they thrive on it, the ambiguity of perception, the trickery of moonlight. So I guess I'm wrestling with my demons, and weed is just unlocking all the gates and letting them swing open. I'm picturing like... Prison Architect and your automatic doors are depowered and all the cells just spring open. So everyone can come chill if they choose. All the sprites and demons can come out express themselves freely, and it's on me - whoever is speaking, whichever personality I have decided to use, default "Me" for the day, past stoner me from highschool, paranoid me in the hospital - to keep them entertained.

I mean, they are guests, right? I don't know. I'm struggling with my own metaphor here. XD I'm trying to compare being high with PTSD as like... taking off your protective gear, unlocking a lion's cage and chilling with it for like 3-4 hours. Sometimes less, I guess, probably tolerance based. And this lion, this lion is the memory of the lion that already attacked you. You and this lion have a history. And it's comin to chill. So maybe it's just a feeling from childhood? Being alone and scared and not feeling safe or protected? Maybe it's memory of home invasions happening in the area recently? Maybe it's not having a dog anymore? Maybe it's just simply the passive constant awareness of my loneliness, and my latent comprehension that if anything were to happen, I can only rely on myself really. Maybe that's the demon creeping in the darkness. Like if it were in a movie, which is what I love to compare it to, because movies paint scenes like this so fucking well! If it were a scene in a movie it would be like a monster creature (whatever is the most... relatable for the individual - alien, ghost, dude wearing darth maul facepaint XD, whatever it is for you) just poking up by my mattress and whispering "Hey, you're not freaking out, are ya?" "Nothing baaaaad is gonna happen, right?"

Good lord, I can tell Halloween is tomorrow (and change). Samhain. I'll do some more study on it and report back. I'll do a little Samhain special to share some ancient myths about this time of year. I think it's a very powerful time of year for emotions, and imagination. Memory. It's a theory, I'm curious to go deeper. Because for me, at least now, it's a lot of just feeling like something's lurking right around the corner, and it feels like that is... a memory, or a traumatic reminder, a flashback. Like if the demon were to whisper to me, I imagine it would make me relive really painful things in the past. The sensations of it, the emotions of it. So it would make sense that this would be a memorable time that people associate with the darkness in life, the macabre, death, evil. Because those are most memorable. The most raw powerful emotions. Sith sources of power. The Dark Side. But they are very important. And we need to be able to have them around, have them over for dinner and just ask them to behave a bit and act like adults? Anakin, looking at you... That's typically what this time of year has been used for, traditionally, for thousands of years. So... I guess, don't forget that part and just obsess about the candy, or the fashion, or the cool costumes. Remember that this is a time to say "hey super traumatic embarrassing thing that happened 10 years ago, I see you over there because my imagination and emotions are very supercharged at this point in the annual cycle, why don't we just sit down and have dinner tonight, and we can go back to the whole cat-and-mouse thing tomorrow, if you want to." You'd be surprised how reasonable that part of you can get if you actually have a conversation with them. I mean, it is you after all... and we all like to think we're reasonable people, right? So... trust your inner demons to be reasonable with you as well, at least one day a year, when they may start to get pretty powerful. When the barrier between the world of the living and the world of the dead is most permeable.

I guess this is my early Halloween post. It's weird how we don't really care about the fact that this is a spiritual holiday anymore. It's like Christmas 2.0, I guess. It's sad, and it explains a lot. It's a shame, because these types of lessons, they're just not really taught other places. The types of myths we got from spirituality, from stories, folk tales, mythologies. We just have this whole fact/fiction line now. At least in mainstream American culture. Empiricism and Fake/Fantasy/Fiction. So if you start talking about the movie Paranormal Activity as a modern folk tale about PTSD, child abuse, and how those affect a young modern-day couple. Dramatized allegories of real things. Important real things. People tend to respond with, "well it's just a movie." "Well it's just a story." "There's no proof it really happened." "Stuff like that doesn't happen in real life." It's dismissed. Denied. And the extremely powerful, important life lessons within are just... littered to the ground. Thrown out like a McDonald's bag on the side of a highway. The key to understanding the perspective of not just the sufferer of child abuse and a PTSD episode that was clearly triggered and caused ripples, but also the perspective of her partner, who is clearly naïve and inexperienced with all of this. Just treated like a tacky spooky haunted house movie. Do not forget the lessons underneath these stories - or Shakespeare or The Brothers Grimm stories, shit like that. Don't forget that these are metaphors, allegories to mimic real scenarios that are relatable. We can all learn from these.

So, this Halloween, watch scary movies. And try to figure out what human condition, what part of the human psyche, of the human experience, that monster or "bad guy" in the movie really was. How does it relate to the dark things in your life. And what can you learn from how the story played out to influence your future handlings with your own darkness?

Tonight, I let my darkness speak a bit. I tried to let her whisper and explore the process here. And it didn't go bad. It was actually pretty informative, and reminded me of how I used to do movie analyses like this. Super in depth though. So I might try to do one of those again. Breaking down horror movies as allegories for working through mental health problems. Maybe people would be more receptive to them now than when I used to write them a few years ago. Maybe I could even do YouTube videos? Could be a cool project for the winter. I could do like... Lovecraft and shit too. That could be sick. It's a thought.

From devastation comes creation. From fear comes love. From death comes birth. The more work I do that's helping me remember that concept, the better. The things that freak me out the most at night? If I engage with them, and turn them into mental health lessons for people who might need it translated and speak the language of ghost hunting or time loop movies or something? That would be a beautiful thing. Even if it's just helpful for my own processing of my own darkness.
