Happy happy birthday @tackytigerfic!!!! After so many recs and lists it was hard to come up with an original idea to celebrate your day but I was inspired by our darling @sweet-s0rr0w’s collaborative reclists and we thought it would be fun to ask our common friends about their Tacky faves, those fics that hold a special place in their heart for personal reasons. The result is this reclist that made me tear up just thinking of how much I love each fic carefully picked, especially after reading those heartfelt and spot-on commentary. This was really fun to put together - massive thanks to Sweets for being the best partner in crime with this side project, and also to @bluebutter-art who generously let us use her stunning artwork for Take the Moon. Without further ado come and feast your eyes on our short but lovely “Tacky essentials”, a collection born out of our mutual love, respect and admiration for everything they are and represent, both as an immensely talented writer who explores the wonders of ordinary life and tender romance with so much heart and sensitivity, and also as a dear, generous friend we’re all very lucky to have by our side. Thank you for your daily kindness and for always being there to soothe my exasperated rants and join my overjoyed babbling. Our Little Life (Mature, 7.2k) ⚔️

Sometimes Harry dreams. Only they're not really dreams at all, and Malfoy is always in them. It's time travel, but not as we know it, and Harry just needs a good night's sleep.

“This a cheeky pick because Tacky wrote it for my birthday but I still so strongly remember reading for the first time each beautiful iteration of their gravitational pull together across every time and age and just feeling like *yes*, YES, this is why I love this ship, these characters, this magnetic draw together across every barrier and boundary. And it’s so much of what makes Tacky’s writing so exceptional—it’s expansive and open-eyed, and so generous with detail and insight. It totally draws you in to every world Harry dreams of, until they feel as real to you as a reader as they do to him, and then you get the sweet ache of reality and his realisation of what he might have.”

Even the Night (Mature, 3.4k) 🚬

Featuring lots of cigarettes, a Midsummer sky, close encounters in a bath, and plenty of fireworks.

“When I think of Tacky’s writing the first things that comes to mind are beautiful prose, gorgeous, evocative imagery and character dynamics that are always so fascinating and deftly written. Even the Night has all of these things and has also been a comfort read that I come back to very often, especially when I need a good cheering up. I love how soft and dreamy the atmosphere is, and despite it only being only 3k words, the universe feels so rich and evocative all the same. I love how subtle and nuanced their characterisation here is- we feel and see so much more as this was a first person POV, and just sensing how strong their yearning for each other in Tacky’s beautiful words are just *chefs kiss*.

My favourite part is their coming together, as it was very sweet and felt very *them*. The gentleness, the vulnerability and deep care and love that they have for each other in that scene is always enough to reduce me into an emotional teary blob (but hey, who am I kidding, that’s essentially me with all of Tacky’s writing!)”

Modern Love (Explicit, 61k) 🎼

Harry Potter, of all people, knows that life isn’t always fair. And no one gets to be happy all of the time. But surely there’s something more—something better—than a rubbish Ministry job, and a lonely old house, and that feeling that everyone out there is doing a better job of living than Harry is. And it really doesn’t seem fair that Draco Malfoy is back in Harry’s life, all of a sudden, and even though he’s wandless, and living with Muggles, and making his mother cry with his lifestyle choices, he’s happy. So what's he doing right, that Harry isn’t?

“Reccing this fic feels a bit like sitting down in front of an abbey full of monks and recommending they check out this hot new book called The Bible. What I mean by that is both that Modern Love is a fundamental religious text in the canon of Drarry (complete with hot priest, thanks very much Tacky) but also that I think most of us have probably read it, and to rec it in the normal sense would be very “do not cite the deep magic to me, witch” vibes. Y’all know. We’ve all inked a page of the illuminated manuscript. Gutenberg is in all of our Twitter circles, and he’s printing honey. So I’m not going to sit here and try to sell you, the reader of this rec, in the year 2022, on The Bible. Instead I’d like to talk a little bit about what this fic meant to me while reading, and what it still makes me feel, months later.

The thing about Modern Love is, reading it made me feel exactly the same way I felt the first time I heard the song Modern Love. I remember sitting in a theatre in Manhattan, way uptown, one of those theatres where everyone else is average age 97 and the snacks are old, easily digestible cookies and paper cups of water. I was seeing Frances Ha, and it was the scene where the titular Frances dances down the street to this song. I’d somehow missed that Bowie song before seeing that movie, and so the audio and visual are now impenetrably melded together in my mind so that every time I hear that song, no matter what context it’s in, I think of someone being so full of emotion and vivacity and so very alive that they can’t just walk down the street—they have to dance. They have to twirl, and throw their hands out, and leap. Reading Modern Love made me feel the same way.

Because you don’t just read a Tacky fic. I mean, fundamentally, if you want to be literal about it, of course you do. But the experience of reading a Tacky story is not as simple as being carried from one word to the next until a sentence is complete, and then a second sentence, and a third, until you have a paragraph. Reading Tacky’s words, you’re compelled to run, to jump, to twist and turn and leap and grin and devour. I keep starting this next sentence as “And watching Modern Love…” because it doesn’t feel like I read it. It feels like I watched it. It feels like I lived it, deep inside of me, and carry it with me wherever I go.

Watching/reading Modern Love… you’re in London with our lads. You’re finding a purpose, you’re discovering meaning, you’re experiencing what it is to be alive, the splendor of making mistakes and looking foolish and falling in love. You remember the joy in being steadfast and determined and then, also, soft and vulnerable, in doing things that mean something, even if no one else notices. And if that’s not worth dancing about, I don’t know what is. Much love to you Tacky. Happy birthday! You’re so special and it is truly an honor to have you writing with us. How’d we get so lucky?”

Through the Window, Clear Skies (Mature, 1.4k) 💍

What would happen if Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy moved in together, too soon after they started kissing and then fucking and not hating each other anymore? Will Draco insist on a wine rack? Or: Domestic Drarry with a bare hint of angst.

“One of my faves of Tacky’s is Through the Window, Clear Skies. It’s in essence a love letter to Draco, and it’s both gorgeously lyrical and refreshingly plain-speaking in perfect measures. And also just fills me with so much happiness for Harry, going for what he wants despite what anyone else thinks about it, about his joy at the fact that he and Draco enjoy the same ‘nice things’ and are a little team, and just *have* each other.

And goddamn it, the smells; Tacky always takes me to a higher plane with their descriptions of smells and sensory things. And lastly, because I don’t want to rave on too much, the absolute beauty of the domestic things—vases of flowers, hanging out the bedlinen, sock-stealing. Plus ok one more thing, the end is just so exquisitely romantic with Draco’s little misunderstanding and Harry’s saving of it.”

Harry's getting good at slipping through the Veil. He's determined to win the war, even if means he has to raise the dead to do it. Draco just wants a stiff drink and a good night's sleep.

“And One To Play is a very special fic for me, and all you have to do is read through the first couple of paragraphs to know why. It’s chock-full of worldbuilding, gorgeous imagery, inventive plot and magic, and crackling sexual tension and push-pull.

The main reason I love it so, however, is because this is the fic that got me out of my lurker status and made me brave enough to message someone in Drarry for the very first time. I didn’t know it then, but this fic brought me to a dear, very special friend who means so, so much to me, and has only meant more as we’ve gotten to know each other. Thank you for writing this and everything else you’ve gifted fandom with, Tacky. I am very lucky to know you.”

Dad Draco!Verse: Semiplume | Far Side | Take the Moon 🛒

Harry Potter has always wanted a family of his own, and when a deadly blood curse forces him into a marriage bond with his best friend Draco Malfoy, it looks like he might just have found one. For someone who never cared for kid fic the fact that I keep coming back to these for comfort is kind of a big deal. No one writes adult romance like Tacky, and these gems showcase their exceptional understanding and exploration of tenderness, longing, devotion and intimacy in ways that make me choke with family feels. It’s such a privilege to watch this Harry and Draco, who love Scorpius - and by extension each other - so very much, learn how to love themselves as well.

I embrace this warm and delicate universe in hopes to find some magic in the small joys of their ordinary life together; and every time Harry learns how to ask for, to have - and hold - nice things a piece of my heart clicks back into place. I see so much of myself, and of people I love - Tacky among them - in these stories, the mark they left within will never fade. “I often find myself moved by whatever writing Tacky shares, long or short, snippet or a full piece. They tell stories that are full of heart, obvious in every word and line and phrase. When I ready Tacky's writing, I see complicated, messy people who get to love and be loved anyway -- that's what keeps me coming back for more of their words every time. I remember reading Between the Power Lines for the first time. I think I got to the end and realized I'd been holding my breath.

I so rarely visualize books as I ready, but this fic's cinematic sensuality brought me along for the ride -- I couldn't put it down, couldn't stop feeling and seeing what Harry and Draco felt. I love the road trip setting because it let us see Draco and Harry moving around each other, readjusting, as the setting around them did the same. If you haven't yet had a chance to read this one, here's your sign to do so. And thank you, Tacky dear, for taking us along for the ride too.”

Harry Potter has a very nice life, thank you very much. He's a top Curse-Breaker with a lucrative Ministry contract, and exciting prospects ahead. Sometimes he does wish that he had time to pursue something official with Draco Malfoy - they're half in love with each other, after all, and a great team (in and out of bed), though Draco is still one of the most infuriating people he knows. Join Malfoy and Potter in a daring tale of espionage, politics, intrigue, and frog-hunting!

“Honestly I could have chosen any one of about twenty fics for this rec, but ~~since I’m not a dirty cheat like Liv~~ I did eventually manage to settle on just the one! Offer Up Our Hearts was the first Tacky fic I ever read, and it instantly became an all-time favourite for me, combining first-class worldbuilding and a truly unique plot with a Harry who feels very true to canon – brave, headstrong, kind – perfectly matched by this Draco who’s confident and capable in his role as Ministry diplomat.

The majority of Offer Up Our Hearts is set in the underground Sidhe fairy realm – described by Tacky so vividly that you’ll feel like you’re there, frog hunting with Draco or sitting down for a feast – with our boys starting the fic in an undefined (but still very romantic) sort-of-relationship. They’re clearly head-over-heels gone for one another but not quite ready to admit it – that is, until a gorgeous fairy prince with eyes for Draco enters the picture. Jealous Harry is a delicious Tacky trademark, and this fic definitely does not disappoint on that front! Offer Up is the perfect fic for you if you’re looking for a fast-paced, fun, romantic read from one of the best Drarry writers out there ❤️”

Today's Matt Smith post reminded me about something I've meant to ask you for ages🤔😉

It might be too early to speculate about but still: how, in your opinion, will HotD go about Daemon's fate after the Gods Eye? Will they leave it completely undetermined, tell the story outright or opt for heavily hinting at the 'truth' with some room for doubt left? And if they choose either the 'tell' or the 'hint' scenario, what will be the lot they'll grant him? I have some thoughts on it but for now don't feel confident enough to place the final bet on either option.

P.S. On a completely unrelated note: I started watching "The Bear", and wanted to thank you for your indirect recommendation as your posts about this show heavily influenced my choice😊 I'm only 3 eps in but already enjoying the deliciously chaotic energy of the story that has just begun to take shape - and loving the absolute hell out of Syd.

Sorry for the late response. I'm only now just sifting through to this Ask!

Hmmm. Let's see. I'm very skeptical about the show letting Daemon live (I suppose that is the main concern here?)

On the one hand, I don't think it's impossible. Daemon is a fan favorite, and much as Ryan loves to diss him, he respects and admires Matt Smith as the veteran of talent he is.

Conversely, I think Ryan could fear shattering the stakes of the fight by letting Daemon get an easy way out...? And let's not even mention the rabid book fans/Daemon×Rhaenyra cultists who would totally lose it if Daemon indeed lived to continue his days with Nettles. 👀👀 Ryan's dealt with fandom condemnation before and it would take balls of steel to subvert the expectations of many who truly believe Daemon sacrificed himself for his Queen or for self vindication?

From all angles I don't see Daemon doing anything other than sinking to the depths with Aemond in a poetic and tragic curtain dropping finale...but maybe the writers or GRRM will want otherwise in the end. Who knows? I guess we'll have to wait and see, but I'm excited for either outcome tbh, if the scenes are executed well and make sense.

holy. moly. this story has me in a chokehold fr. aims writes so beautifully and i hang on to every word she writes. im in awe of how well she captures each and every scene. i connect to this story so so much. i’ve never felt so heard and understood in my life lol. seriously my favorite series ever. i’ve reread it like 5 times and i’ll still go back and read it. it’s such a place of comfort and feels so safe even though it deals with darker content. like it literally changed my life lol. i can literally go on and on forever but i highly suggest this series, even if you aren’t in the aot fandom.

basically my main one is that i consider that all the drivers are probably arseholes/annoying to some extent bc lets be honest you do NOT get to this level in sports, especially in motorsports without being a bit selfish and they are all young(ish) men who have mostly grown up with privilege and/or definitely have it in buckets now. sure some of them have made more fools of themselves by saying silly things in public but i do think that i wouldn't want to meet any of them/ probably wouldn't actually really like them if i got to know them

idk if that sounds mean 😭 because there are some of them that i do like and respect for different reasons but i think we all need to calm down about putting guys on pedestals. it takes some of the argumentative edge off if you just assume that all of them are regular people with flaws or things about them that you won't like so much, whether they are highly publicised or not. trying to make your fave look better by pointing out flaws/actions of other drivers just gets sooo old.

that said i dont think theres harm in highlighting nice/good things that they do bc we need positivity too!

random other takes: i think everyone should just stay out of wags business, lando not having a win doesn't mean he's a flop or worse than oscar/george/whoever people are comparing him too now, yuki has actual real talent even if he makes mistakes sometimes under pressure (and everyone talking about his "attitude problems" need to bffr), and despite everything i DO feel so bad for nyck lol

I think that you’re right about drivers being assholes and annoying to an extent, but not because of privilege but because they’re just boys 😭 privilege & wealth don’t go hand and hand with being a dick, so I don’t think you’re giving these drivers enough credit. Now I’m not saying they’ll be your best friend upon meeting then or they’ll be the happiest person ever, but I think MOST of them will be kind. I mean between the interactions I’ve seen with Charles and Alex, and what Dax has said about Daniel, I don’t think you have to worry about all of them being dicks. I understand the fear of meeting them though, bc I also have that fear but more so out of breaking the fourth wall. It’s weird, my brain.

And yeah, I always say that there’s a way to support your fave driver without putting down another. I don’t understand why people who bash on other drivers spend the energy when they could be using that time to focus on their fave. I’ll never understand that side of the fandom and I’ll probably go insane before I ever do.

how long do you have cause i can be here all day....

hes just. wonderful. all around. never met a nicer, more realist and grounded man than he is. not to even mention how inclusive and respectful he is and he tries to make his spaces to be (and before anyone says anything, i know hes not perfect, he obviously has his flaws as he is still a stupid human being, but from multiple personal experiences i can tell he does his best). like fr hes just such a good bean, and ive never heard anyone say a bad word about him when someone has interacted with him

and then ofc his in character work is incredible. how he manages to build and tell compelling stories and keep developing himself and his character while hes at it. hes so talented on the mic and brings a really interesting flare into the ring and hes just a delight to watch, and ive especially been enjoying watching his recent heel work mocking his opponents in ridiculous ways. also the back arch but we dont have time to unpack that rn--

but uuuh yeah he plays like.. at this specific point in time im not sure about the character to be quite honest? he calls himself a 'pro wrestling artist' as he keeps weaving and telling stories through his work and arcs, but idk how thats currently working out for him (i blame lack of tv time which is such a fucking curse 😔). hes more or less alligned in a trios team(/stable) with butcher and blade atm, i think they are gonna use the deadly alliance name at least for now - apart from them being kips friends/hired guns i dont really know whats going on over there either storywise. again, the curse of lack of tv time ugh. but even with that said, they are a great team with an incredible connection with one another, and they play their designated roles so well. also they are just happy to work together which is more than enough for me to enjoy them c:

as far as my favorite thing, god theres so many... but tbh i just love him a lot because of how good of a bean he is in general. ive never had a salty interaction with him once in like two years now, hes always very supportive and tolerates a lot of random bullshit from me (being a known fan has its perks lmao) and he has been nothing but understanding and respectful at me to a point of reaching out to me personally about some things to make sure i was comfortable with it. so like.. yeah hes just the best 💜

I find it interesting that you praise Tessa and Scott so much for so many things, including their athleticism, but that you put quotes around “sport” when referring to ice dance today. While no team may live up to what Tessa and Scott brought to the sport, don’t you think that athletes today, even those at a lesser level or who don’t push the boundaries of art and possibility, still deserve some level of respect? Like Chock and Bates, I don’t watch them all that much but I can certainly respect improvement, dedication, and their own innovation without loving watching them like I did VM. Would you really look at what they are doing and not call C/B and others athletes? Curious to hear your thoughts.

LONG POST AHEAD:

It’s not that I don’t respect other teams.. I just don’t care that much about the sport.. I’ve watched a lot of it but predominantly only competitions from VM’s era- so im much more familiar with teams they competed against.I think I’m able to speak so specifically and with such nuance on VM because I adore them and I have studied them with such precision.. other teams I haven’t done that because i dont feel the connection that i do to VM. Anon I’m interested why you pulled out that specific word air quoted? Honestly I didn’t think about it, I put quotes around things all the time and it’s hardly the first time i or anyone has questioned Ice dance’s legitimacy of the sport.. remember when it nearly got kicked out of the olys. This is all to do with standards and I don’t feel the sport is at a high standard at the moment, not where it use to be and it’s disappointing when there are people who could be so talented are being held back by some shitty ISU rules, not allowing or rewarding strong technical skating and athletic excellence. (There are people who know far more than me who have said this same thing on here).

If I’m being perfectly honest there were things I saw when I first watched VM that I didn’t think we’re great:

Eg: I didn’t like the stat lift position in Mahler

I thought there were some sloppy moments in various Carmen performances (and while i love it for everything that it is it is and why they did it it’s not my fave program and they could’ve done it much better)

I don’t ‘LOVE’ their Latin SD from 2011/12

And various other nuanced moments because I’ve been trained (through high level ballet) to critique things.

As I’ve watched more and more I’ve been able to appreciate really nuanced things in their skating/dancing and overall partnership. I love them and appreciate them because they are the one team I feel that fully balances sport and dance, and on top of that they have this unbelievable chemistry that creates an odd illusion of seeing two people experiencing a relationship, but are so connected and have this physical advantage that kinda makes it so you are only seeing one of them. On the sport and dance matter, case and point: when I showed them to my mum who was with me all through my dancing and has seen a lot and nothing much impresses her, she’s not a dancer but she can tell what’s good and what’s not unbiasedly: watching some ice dance she said ‘the sport is ice dance right, i don’t feel like they are dancing’. Watching TS, ‘they are dancing. I feel them dancing, telling a story, I fully believe them, I don’t care they are on ice in skates, they are dancers’. She like me through dance is quite judgmental of skating, gymnastics etc, when there isn’t turnout of pointed feet or drab performances, she says so. TS she never felt that. She recalled seeing them years ago probably from YVR or Sochi and she thought they were beautiful but she thought everyone was like that.. then when I made her watch a comp she said ‘oh god TS aren’t even on the same level.. there’s no way you can judge other teams against them because they are doing something totally different that you can’t possibly compare in the same way to everyone else’

Above all- (if I were to try) comparing TS to every other team I’ve ever watched (and while I may not have watched every other team to the in depth level of TS, I have watched multiple.. top 10 vm era teams multiple times) TS dance where as every other team I feel simply skates. I don’t feel any other team has the inherent connection to music or movement that takes it from skating, to dancing, to art. No other teams (maybe TD exempted, but since VM) have pushed past the requirements of their sport in the way TS did. I don’t know how many on here have the unique vantage of viewing purely from the perspective of ‘dance’ rather than skating or even laymen who just enjoy the sport. Dance is a sport, it its athletic and requires you to be strong, flexible, determined, creative and hard working. All teams competing at this level are no doubt skilled and talented and work hard, and many have been waiting for the opportunity to win/medal a worlds title, but the fact that one of them this year will imo is not because they are the standard deserving of it, its just in their field there is no one better. For people who were there through VM’s career or even those who came along after and dived into their skating and the environment around them, i think.. i feel it must me hard to accept the sport has changed and maybe not for the better in that the skill level and overall boundary pushing has clearly dropped. I feel that way both athletically and artistically. For those who are able to happily watch current ice dancing and enjoy it for what it is, that’s great, i don’t necessarily wish i could because i never really cared about the sport to begin with (but i’ve enjoyed learning about it and it’s history) Being able to accept the current standard as world title worthy is not something I’m personally able to do. If 10 is the level of VM’s performance and chemistry than no team would achieve anything close to 10, but 10 is not defined by a other team, its defined by whatever the ISU has made up (or paid to say is) worthy of 10. I understand the sport doesn’t and can’t work like this, but it makes it hard for me to watch it knowing there has been so much better.. and forget ‘better’, that i just feel more connected to as a viewer. Its not to say there won’t be a team that comes along, but right now there isn’t and theres a lot of factors contributing to that beyond any specific team.

I know someone will probably say ‘how are you able to say you don’t think a team is deserving when you haven’t watched them closely’, which.. fair. im probably not. I don’t actively seek out current skating to watch.. I watched CanNats.. wasn’t impressed.. but I see results just coz the IG algorithm gives them to me, clips of performances etc.. also and I’m not ashamed to admit this, I am biased to VM, and I’m fine with that because in what way will me quietly loving them affect anything in this world?? I have watched plenty of these teams (that competed with VM) many times from previous years, the Beijing olys, and when I occasionally read something current on here it seems clear there’s are others who feel the standard has dropped too.. but that’s not everyone’s opinion.

I don’t know how many teams have or are actively striving to extend their legacy beyond the boards of skating rink through what they perform in a skating rink- hell i don’t even think VM necessarily strived for that, i don’t think they had some big grand plan and they will tell you they didn’t but simply through their own desire to push themselves, they achieved this. I don’t think anyone should or need to achieve this but the fact is VM did, they were the special two that did. I often go back to my love for the Beatles and how J+P’s story is similar to VM- a random meeting of two people who happened to have what it took through passion, hard work, a favourable set of circumstances that lead to achieving a level of greatness that no one else in their industry will… for a very long time at least. They changed their field of art for the better, but it didn’t necessarily stay that way.. the music industry has gone to shit (through tech/manufactured ‘artists’) the skating world has dropped (ISU not doing their fucking jobs, certain coaches/countries doping etc.. different things affecting different disciplines) VM rose in a period of relative stability and that was favourable to them. This chance meeting and stars aligning was the same with vm. They had the right personalities, dedication, etc and favourable timing and they inadvertently changed the sport in ways they didn’t even set out to. It just happened and it happened to them. Its kind of matter of natural selection..

I don’t know if I’m conscious to it or but I think I use the world ‘sport’ when I’m referring to the sport of ID and the rare times other teams as SPORT and when referring to TS I say art or dance is because they have completely bridged that divide and have become artists that can’t be simply defined as skaters because they were just that extraordinary. I don’t watch them and think about edges or judging or elements because they are so much more than that, all those things are irrelevant when you watch them because it’s so much… more than that (idk how else to put it).

That thing I said about being very scrutinising of TS when I first watched them, well only because a) I fell in love with them as people let alone dancers and b) I have watched them so much and realised this essence they have and appreciation for what they do, I have remained scrutinising about the rest of the sport because no other team, and for that matter very few skaters in general (sui/han, Yuna, yuzu, Misha Ge, Jason brown, Carolina, Patrick to an extent) have ever made me forget about scrutinising and just watch and enjoy what they do.

I was gonna put out a request for this before I did this but since it’s kinda on the topic of this ask I’ll do it now.

My opinions on (again, roughly top 10 of VM’s era) ID teams (prefacing this by warning this will be critical and as said above I am critical of this sport and I am biased to VM, however as you yourself admit TS set such a high standard). I have more personal opinions on some of these teams/skaters that I don’t feel appropriate to share to their full extent because I can admit to myself they are unwarranted to have in the first place since I don’t know them as people and can only judge the character that I see.

Also.. this is weird and it won’t make sense to anyone, but for me having grown up in competitive dance, I watch a lot of ID teams and associate them with ‘styles’ of various dance studios I used to compete against. Not dance styles (eg ballet or hip hop) but studio styles. Eg, ‘Shibs are very JGSOD and CB are very iDance’.. those studios names won’t make any sense to any of you but I just thought I’d mention that’s a weird way I watch ID teams, and highlights the fact that TS I don’t relate to any one style or school or company in the dance world I have ever seen before because their style is simply THEM.

D/W: Cleary consistent. Work well together having skated for so long. I do not like their style, I don’t feel they have any connection, it just feels like two people skating, they skate well, but no emotional connection that comes from an honest place, only performative. (I haven’t watched a lot of programs of theirs) but through their movement I sense a lack of creativity, it’s very clean, cookie cutter, but they don’t take artistic risks. I’ve seen many other posts highlighting their addiction to war horsy programs that are relatively safe themes and don’t challenge the judges or audience.

P/C: simply jumped on the popularity of the moody, melodramatic contemporary style taking over the competitive dance world, found that it worked and stuck with it, rose to prominace in an unchallenged field- no team still competing from the VM/DW era was able to step up to fill the void. (+French Fed/didier). PC’s style and a lax of ISU technical scrutiny somewhat leading to the simplification and lack of innovation in ice dance. I watched the Beijing olys and while there were teams not doing this style, both athletic ability and dominance/favourably from judges of the themeless contemporary style prevented anyone from breaking through as a team with a vision and will have to try and make their mark in the current quad. And you know what.. I partly put some of the blame for this on IAM.. all their teams post VM kinda blended into one for me without any of them standing out with their own personalities.. (again- not basing this purely on programs because I haven’t watched all of them, but just a general observation because I’ve have seen this happen in the dance world I’ve come from). It is inevitable when you have 20 some odd ‘top’ teams all trained by the same people, it takes individuality and desire to differ yourself (VM) to stand out in this environment and actually succeeding in doing so often comes down to rare, raw talent (again this is subjective so just because i don’t view a team as being capable of this doesn’t mean other’s don’t). I don’t know PC personally obviously but certain instances have made question and therefore dislike their character as competitors: ‘we were hoping, praying for TS to mess up and when they didnt we were like ‘shit’, ‘we only lost PYC coz of the costume (which was her fault) and deserved to win if not for that’, ‘knowing they would win Beijing because they were unchallenged and that gold was the one they deserved from 4 years ago’ ‘not challenging themselves or the sport, yes creating their own distinct style but eventually they will be forgotten when the style becomes obsolete’. They are good, but not anywhere near VM and the fact they think they are (just from what I gather from their character, esp her) makes me dislike them. VM never thought they were holier than thou, when told they are the goats they reference T/D. yes they spoke out when they felt they weren’t scored fairly but other times when they clearly were (cough Sochi) they didn’t and maintained they were beaten fair and square. It’s not just about athletic talent, it’s also about character bc good, kind character comes through in performances as honest and genuine.

Shibs: technically clean, did the essentially the exact same program for 3 seasons (coldplay, after the rain (16/17) and coldplay again) in the same costume just different colours. Did not have one lift that was attractive or that stands out as innovative or something you’ll remember. Some people are fine with the sibling team thing and others aren’t. Generally I’m not really a fan of it (i agree with T i think its kind of odd) but if a team can convince me otherwise I’m fine with it. Cathy and Chris reed I thought were fine, Z/Z from Israel I thought were fine, the Kerrs creep me out.. Alex and Maia were clearly the best of the sibling teams of this era but to me they just looked like 10-13 year old siblings at a recital and never broke out of that visual for me.

WeaPo: I’ve never liked them as skaters, as people they seem lovely. They are team that clearly improved A LOT- 20 something at worlds when VM were 6th, 17th (I think) the following year when VM were second (yes they had only just paired up and TS had been together 11 years). Even improvement between like 2012ish and 2017ish you can tell. They obviously became a top team deserving of placements but were still farrrr behind TS the whole time and were fortunate in VM stepping away for 2 years allowing them to win titles they wouldn’t have otherwise. I find them quite awkward, obviously Andrew is very tall so he needs a tall partner, but K seems not quite tall enough. None of their programs stand out to me. The best for me are probs their 2014 olys FD and their 2018 olys latin was ok- bit different to rest of the field. I’ve never connected to them emotionally, I find their performances quite forced and un balanced, K going for it too hard and Andrew not knowing where the hell she is emotionally and kinda just has one look on his face dependent on the tempo (brooding for anything slow/dramatic)

Bock:……. Meehhhh.. i just don’t feel anything for them, they have very plastic expressions. It feels like when you are teaching little kids dances to perform and you say ‘smile here’ ‘ok be sad here’. It’s like their emotions have been choreographed for them. I keep forgetting they are actually a couple because you wouldn’t guess it watching them skate. On a skating level I’m not knowledgeable enough to say how specifically they improved. Energy and performance wise i see very little difference between 2014, 2018, 2022. Sometimes i think they are capable of more than i think ‘no they really aren’t’. No doubt they are one of the top teams now, but that is because the standard (party as a result of ISU rules) has gone down the drain. In almost any other field they would not be considered world champ material, and in this field i don’t consider that either, but i don’t consider anyone particularly deserving of a ‘World Champions’ title. (I really hope they win just so gilorier don’t because that I can’t will struggle to live with). Sometimes its who you don’t have to beat. PC were able to (somehow) rise because VM + DW were gone, W/P got some titles they other wise wouldn’t have gotten, its like if you took the top 50 tennis players out of a grand slam, it would be way easier for a lower ranked/skilled player to win. They are just kinda forgettable to me (same with G/F, LoLo/Nik).

Gilorier: ughhh.. they remind me of Ken and Barbie when the skate/perform.. 10x more plastic than C/B.. i don’t think I’ve ever seen paul move his spine/neck/have a genuine/natural expression. As someone who actually has 3 metal rods in their back i think i can bend and express more than he does. They try so hard to be so creative and different with their programs (this seems like a carol thing since @ otherteams) it becomes hard to watch. I actually kind of liked their James Bond dance, but the plastic expressions kind of suited that. Their themes cover up for their.. average (until recently maybe- I’m judging them in the VM era) skating skills (idk, someone who knows more tell me if their skating skills are good). I see them as the ‘gimmick’ team. You don’t have to be sooo outrageous, its distracting. I adore TS always with the view that they want their costumes to be minimal and not distract.. we’ll its easy not to notice the actual skating when you’ve been blinded by tangerine jumpsuits.. it was like looking at an eclipse. Also them being the top Canadian team right now is even harder. .esp watching the Beijing olys and VM saying they were the best medal hope out of literally every discipline.. like im sorry my bbys your legacy and the 2018 team’s legacy could not be passed on. (thats a whole other subject)

H/D: I’m nervous about this one bc a lot seemed to love them… but i honestly don’t get it. They were great skaters by the end, no doubt the strongest and should not have been so far behind PC in any way shape or form.. but thats where my praise kinda ends.. im gonna be honest here because i don’t know how to say it nicer.. Zach seems like a complete douch.. i already said it on that post everyone is angry at me for.. it was sooooooooooooo freaking obvious he was obsessed with Scott and tried to be like Scott. Its great Scott had such a positive impact on other male skaters and so many looked up to him.. but Zach was just trying soooooo hard to be like him. When i reference TS being so soft and caring of each other in public- on ice during warm ups, and in the past I’ve referenced other teams ‘trying’ to be like this.. Zach is who im referring to. it was not soft, it was creepy.. It just looked so fake, from both of them (hd) for that matter, Trying so hard to convince the audience of a connection. i don’t know where people saw the chemistry in them because i never did. They always skated really angry (like with an angry, frantic energy) very ‘commercial’ style- music video style with the low angle steady cam all in your face. I think they think they thought they were connecting and performing to each other but to me it often looked like they were conflicted whether to perform to the audience or each other and neither quite worked. TS have this thing where they find each others eyes like magnets, HD seemed to have to try so hard to find each other’s eyes. So often they lost that connection and focus. Every team has less then perfect performances but they were an inherently flop team for so long. They definitely deserved their medal in 2022, probably one higher than bronze for that matter, but i didn’t like their programs. Obviously i don’t know them, they are probably great people, but i just am not attracted to them. The little bit of that oly channel series on IAM that i watched, one part was just them yelling at each other in front of Scott and im sitting their watching like ummmmmmm… (whatever works for them but christ can u even imagine TS talking to each other like that???) And then yeah the ‘STAT. LIFT BASE!’ I mean the commentary in the K+C.. ‘just give us +5’ i HATE that kind of cocky confidence (same as PC) Scott could at least admit he was cocky and improved and changed his demeanour so much as he matured into a truly beautiful artist and person.. but i never saw him acting like he and Tess were the best thing since sliced bread- egging on a high score for a sub-par performance, let alone an amazing one in the k+c. Character has a lot to do with it.

Others: B/S- fine nothing amazing i liked their later FDs but never loved them. C/L: cute.. gonna sound hypocritical here but they really suited the traditional, operatic, period, Italian folk vibe really well and whenever they departed from that they lost it for me. The lifts were always very hijinxy- often unnecessarily so, theres innovation then theres tricks for the sake of tricks- thats a delicate balance. Im glad they won a worlds and euros but with VM back in the field sort of 4th/5th/6th is fairly where their skill kept them. StepBuk: (why not let’s throw them in) they probably had the most genuine connection of any other team around this time. I understand they had been together since kids so that helps, but as I said the other day.. it’s the quality of TS relationship that makes them so much more believable as being in love.. fuck it just caring about each other and seeing that through their dancing. DW I didn’t get that feeling/PC i definitely didn’t.. so it’s not just being together so long and using that to an advantage.. you have to work for it (not to say others haven’t but we’ve been over this TS prioritised it every fucking day). All the other top teams in VM’s early senior career were good for the time but as VM (and DW) overtook them the skill, performance and overall talent gap became obvious; B/A, D/S, F/S, P/B etc..

I don’t understand where the argument comes in that you have to love and appreciate all teams… why do I have to randomly praise teams I don’t like? I’m not actively trashing them (like some people do on here and have done to VM) I just don’t think they are that good and I said so like.. once or twice out of how many posts on here..

I don’t love skating- I learned about it through VM. I was critical of it before discovering them, I’m critical of it now. When VM do something I don’t love I will say so. It’s hard to love and appreciate a sport when there’s only really one team/person you are invested in. I have lots of opinions about other teams and the sport in general, some might be valid, some not, none of my opinions are gonna change the sport for good or bad.. my opinion on vm or any team takes nothing away from what said team has and will achieve whether I agree with the result or not. That’s literally the extent of my thoughts on the subject..

I know anon you aren’t saying this but others have, who is anyone to criticise someone else for loving something? Why do people have to criticise why I love VM, or what part of them I admire. I know I said I don’t get why people like HD but I wouldn’t go so far to call someone out on it personally. Each to their own. There is room for everyone, but not everyone is equal in a field where some are just better.

Chris fans: Sebastian’s not as famous as Chris, Sebastian is a nobody.

Sebastian: Emmy nominee, two successful “indie” projects, unfortunately harassed by paparazzi, name is on every fashion article, is called an A List by multiple reports but I guess horny fangirls know best?, praised by critics and journalist for his acting, is able to financially support an entire project, gives thousands in tips, and continues to donate 10 of thousands to charity or others, gives such an wonderful performance that a major production company makes him producer of next films, has a grounding group of celebrity friends that are not for show but just because they genuinely care about him, funny enough Chris is included, the Academy writes about he could be a nominee and future Oscar winner, is considered one of the biggest Oscars snubs because of I, Tonya, is named the most versatile actor in the MCU, present and past.

I mean should I go on? Sometimes I wonder why Chris didn’t develop a closer knit to his fans and then I’m reminded why and completely understand him.

I've gotten quite a few asks lately about how some Chris fans are apparently being dismissive of Sebastian and saying he's not as big of a star as Chris, or that Chris doesn't like Sebastian, etc.

I fully understand that that's frustrating and, obviously, it's ridiculous. Sure, Sebastian isn't quite as established a name as Chris is, but why does that matter? He's incredibly talented, he's respected in the industry and has some incredible achievements to his name, and he's always done what he wants and clearly loves the hell out if it. That's what matters. There are plenty of people who are more famous than Sebastian who are not actually great people with great reputations, so fame really isn't everything.

As for Chris not liking Seb: lol, I guess that's why he said he Seb is a dear friend and he loves him with all his heart? That makes sense, yep. No but seriously, I can't help but laugh when people try to act like Chris and Seb aren't friendly. Sure, Jan, whatever you say.

And really, who cares what these Chris fans are saying? They have their own agendas and probably some issues, and for some reason saying this stuff makes them feel better. Whatever 🤷🏻‍♀️ Again, I know it's frustrating to see people say bad things about your fave, but that's why I will always, always advice to just avoid, or block and ignore. This stuff isn't worth investing too much energy in, or getting worked up or upset over. At the end of the day, it's all just silly squabbling between the kind of fans that give fans a bad name (Sebastian's bad fans aren't exactly any better...).

Sebastian is living his best life. Chris and Sebastian know their relationship is solid. These fans and their bitching do not matter. So protect your peace, nonnie! Focus on the good stuff, there's plenty of that around too <3

Against all my initial beliefs you are actually fair! Lo' and behold my disbelief!! I love how you hold ARMY accountable instead of sweeping everything under the rug, like JK's questionable Qatar stance, Jin's enlistment article and other instances. ARMY as whole acts very much like a cult, honestly, and please don't come for me for this. But I admire your integrity in not doing that and actually saying what it actually is. For that you have my respect. And personally, we need more non partial fans, who don't pretend to be holier than thou while excusing very contentious event, exactly like a cult.

Against you initial beliefs? What? You can't start like that and not explain yourself 😆 I basically maintained the same position since I started this blog, so this is making me curious.

One of the points of what I'm trying to do here is to show that it is possible to be a fan while not being entirely caught up in a cult-like mentality. And how that allows us to be able to separate some of the things we like about these idols, while being impartial or look at an issue from multiple sides. I was actually talking to a friend today specifically about this. As a fan, I like Jungkook. I like his quirks, how cute he is, everything that makes him "him" as an idol, aka what we are presented with. But he's also an adult who makes decisions that not always sit right with everyone, he can get caught up in all sorts of situations. And that doesn't mean that my automatic response is to defend him just because I like some parts of him. It is also not my job to defend him. I can live with all these options in my head. I also don't feel the need to make someone appear as the most morally upstanding citizen in order to like them. Perhaps it's because I'm used to directors who are shitty people in real life, but I could always appreciate their talent. And I also met my "idols", which is a good thing. It allowed me to see them as people. Which means they can stop being this one dimensional personalities in my head. And the same applies to every other member, or the group or decision they make. If I personally believe that X idol is wrongly missjudged, I will say it. If I think that criticism makes sense, I will say it. And my faves are not immune to that and will never be.

Currently reading: I'm diving into Ao3 everyday for all the amazing KP fanfics - a heartfelt THANK YOU!! to all the talented writers ! I hope y'all know you're well loved and appreciated !! ( I try and recommend everything I love on Ao3, as well as here so dig into my "fic rec" tag if you feel like it ,cuz if i start listing this post will never end….)

Also, I try and keep active -trying to loose weight yet again smh - and one of my favourite sports things to do is walk in the park with an audio book as entertainment.Currently listening to the Soulbound book series by Hailey Turner and I absolutely LOVE it !!!

Last song: Last music video I watched was the english version of Why don't you stay

Right now, while writing this, i'm listening to Phases by PRETTYMUCH and 2 of my current favorites are Armor by Landon Austin and Devil Doesn't Bargain by Alec Benjamin cuz my brain associate them with KinnPorsche and VegasPete respectively - the KP brain rot has taken deep roots, my friend !

Last Series: I'm in the same boat as you - "Kinnporsche, because I literally can't watch anything else." - *smh mournfully*nothing else is worthy !

Last movie: We're two peas in a pod- " I don't have the attention span to watch movies" -ME TOO but i bit the bullet and watched Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ...It was ….sigh…*silently shakes my head while making a face * i . do. not. recommend it …

But the last movie I really liked and know will be getting a sequel is The Old Guard - immortal husbands AND Charlize Theron kicking ass ! what's not to love?

Currently working on: Absolutely nothing , i'm consuming all the content while contributing nothing , nada, zilch …¯\_(ツ)_/¯. pls don't hate me ...
