“And if that was true, then the young Tsar Lunanoff was a brave, forgiving being.Jack wished he could have met him.” You have such a talent for writing the most simplest sentences that hold the most bittersweet and hopeful feelings… I haven’t finished Into Shadows We Fall yet but this sentence made me feel a pain in my chest. I relate to Jack’s loneliness a lot too😭
Ahhhh thank you so much anon!
I really liked thinking about Jack's strange relationship with the Man in the Moon, and how sad and lonely it was. Jack wanted so much to make that connection, and it was never there at the same time in the movie.
I enjoyed exploring that a bit more in the Shadows and Light stories, and giving him room to have that bitterness and his hope alongside each other.
And yeah Jack's loneliness is really way too relatable, I think it's unfortunately but also just so real that so many folks can relate to him on that level <333 I hope you're taking care anon!

[ROTG] Era Of New Ideas
Here's my ROTG Stocking Stuffer 2022 fill for prompt#5… Based on the prologue comic: What if North had made Pitch agree to become a Guardian?
@rotgsecretsanta
_______________
“You would put our destiny in the hands of stupid, ignorant children?” Pitch’s temper was obviously flaring, and his robe of shadows flared with it, the sleeves flapping like the wings of a fierce and ruthless bird of prey. The grey hand holding his staff with the S-curve at its head was white-knuckled. “You have it backwards! WE are the ones who influence their fate!”
The dark spirit looked as though at any moment he would turn on his heel and storm out of Santoff Claussen, and that would be an immeasurable loss.
Choose next words carefully, Nicholas St. North thought to himself.  He had bungled with the mention of Manny. Too late he remembered Sandy’s warning of how touchy and prideful the Boogeyman was. Pitch is far older than you are, and he has never been a human. He is one of Gaea’s spirits, and came into being before the Man in the Moon.
It had been on the tip of North’s tongue to snap back, “No, it is you who are backwards!” He swallowed that before he could blurt it out.  Instead, he lowered his voice and replied, “You are right. When I say world is changing, what has not changed is children need protection. You will guide them. You will influence their destiny. The children believe in you. With you alongside us, they will believe in all of us, and we will all protect them.” He took a deep breath and took a chance by clasping Pitch’s arm, concluding with the statement, “Fear protects, no?”
Pitch looked down at the massive yet gentle hand on his arm; his jaw was still clenched, his face stern.  His tone, however, was more conciliatory when he looked back up and answered. “Fear protects, yes.”
Behind Pitch’s back, Sandy floated upwards so that North could see him holding two thumbs up, a guarded look on his face.
Tooth looked like she had bitten an unripe persimmon, but one problem at a time.
North gave Pitch a nod and made up his mind to take the plunge. “So. You will become Guardian?”
Pitch gazed back coolly, those strange silver-ringed golden eyes reflecting the glow from the strings of lights that bedecked the Workshop. “I will… consider it.”
The tall spirit bowed to Tooth and to Sandy in turn, then backed into a bank of shadows and disappeared.
The silence that followed was thick enough to cut with a knife. Finally, North proclaimed, injecting a heartiness into his tone that he wasn’t sure he felt, “So. That went well, no?”
Sandy pursed his lips and blew out a silent “phew”. Tooth patted Sandy’s back and grimaced, saying, “I agree, Sandy. I wouldn’t describe that as ‘going well’.” Then she fluttered up, getting into North’s face, literally and metaphorically. Her tone became strident. “I don’t understand Manny’s thinking, but I trust you, North.  Convince me that we NEED the Boogeyman, and I’ll work by his side the way I work by your side and Sandy’s.  You know how to reach me.”  Gathering her cloud of mini-fairies, she zoomed off through one of the Workshop’s skylights and disappeared into the Arctic sky.
North’s shoulders slumped.  Seeing this, Sandy floated over to him and laid a tiny hand on his back in reassurance.
“Have I done wrong thing, friend?” North asked. “You have known Pitch long time, just as long as Manny has. I thought suggesting balance would appeal, but seems to have upset him.”
Sandy shook his head. He sent up a sequence of dreamland symbols, and North paid close attention. First came a single ox. Next came two oxen yoked together, which changed to two oxen harnessed to a wagon, pulling it in perfect synchronicity. The final image was that of a team of oxen, all moving in harmony with one another as they plowed a field.
North stroked his beard reflectively. “You say we should each work with Pitch one-on-one, rather than fitting him into our team like square peg in round hole?”
The little golden man nodded, the first real smile of the day starting to bloom on his face.
“Hmmmm.  That just might work. Do you think Toothy will agree?”
Sandy made a gesture as though he were stroking a cat whose fur had been rubbed the wrong way, and then sent up a sand-symbol of a clock.
“If enough time, yes, maybe.”
The dreamweaver pointed to himself, which made North chuckle warmly. “Better you than me, friend. I would not want to cross steel with Tooth to make her accept Boogeyman. Her skill with blades almost as fearsome as mine!”
Sandy nodded in reply, and shaped a dreamland cloud in order to take his leave of Santoff Claussen.
North gave instructions to the Yetis who were still working, and then withdrew to the half-finished room that he was planning to use as an office.  He started sketching, which always helped soothe him when he was worried and distracted.
He hoped that Pitch’s “consideration” of becoming a Guardian would not take terribly long.
As it turned out, Pitch Black returned to Santoff Claussen three days later. His opening remark, as though it had been mere minutes rather than seventy-two hours since he and North had spoken, was to repeat, “But it would work!”
“Pardon?”
“My idea. Frightening the children into good behavior. You and I could create some kind of list, a list that children would want to be on, so that they didn’t merit a visit from me.”
“A list, hmmmm. A list of who was naughty and who was nice… might be more effective if TWO lists…” “Exactly! A ‘Nice List’ for those children whom you would be rewarding, a ‘Naughty List’ with which children who fear the Boogeyman can be convinced to behave well.”
North’s eyes were twinkling as he held out a hand to Pitch once again.
And this time Pitch took it. “Tell the Man in the Moon that I accept, although it would have been much more courteous of him to ask me himself.”
“Am glad to hear you will join us, Pitch.” North leaned over to whisper in the Boogeyman’s ear, “Between you and me, I think you have always been Guardian.”
“Too right.”
They shook hands solemnly.
