Mechs albums have taught me:
OUAT(IS): love conquers evil. gays rule, old men drool
UDAD: the government hates you
HNOC: racism caused global warming
TBI: eldritch trains kill people, or make you snakes if you're gay enough for the mind-bending squamous beings
DTTM: gay people dying is very sad, and the bury your gays trope transcends immortality

so i've been listening to elysian fields way too much lately and thinking how fucked up that song is for the mechs to perform. like put death to the mechanisms out of your head (bc that basically didn't happen yet with udad) and listen.
they're immortal. they can't die. the song is all about the sweet release of death, and arguably a gentle one at that, cradled in the fields on a world were nature ceases, next to the grave of your deceased beloved. it's a beautiful song, and arguably, ulysses got their happy ending.
the mechanisms don't get that, though. most didn't even get the option of keeping mortality. they're stuck on the mortal plane, in flesh and metal, with no escape or release within reach.
their finale performance of this album is the bittersweet comfort of mortality and endings, something they're well aware they will never be granted.

If you couldn’t tell I have relapsed into my “feral about the mechs” arc again. Anyway thinking about UDAD. Thinking about how in all other mechs stories, the tragedy affects the entire society it occurs within. TBI and HNOC end in total annihilation, OUATIS ends with the deaths of the leaders of two major factions, even Frankenstein has large ramifications. Thinking about how no one will remember Ulysses. No one will mourn their death. No one will know about the last living tree. Ulysses died with the bones of their lover and no one to continue their legacy.

random but I like to think Orpheus posted Trial by Song to his space Spotify or smth not long before he left for the vault job and just titled it something like 'song for the vault' or something similarly cryptic to anyone not familiar with the vault job because no way he just wrote the whole thing not to make money from it (bros gotta afford that lotus somehow)
And then he never posted anything again

Y'all I haven't been in the mechs fandom for very long whatsoever, and I listened to the whole thing in like a day but let me tell you I did NOT expect HNOC to be the most popular album for some reason? Like I see why, obviously. But still. My personal favorite will always be OUAT(IS) but I did expect the fandom favorite to be UDAD. Because idk man, something very Greek mythology about most neurodivergents. Its like catnip for us I swear. But anyways I guess poly cowboys and rusting drumbots win in the end? Wild.
