Listening to July 18 (Demeter Day)
Even if you had never read the book before, anyone in 1897 reading
Since there was nothing on board except THE HUGE BOXES OF DIRT there’s nowhere for a man to hide
must have been facepalming and screaming at the book. The 19th century version of waving your hands at the horror film while you yell, “DON’T GO IN THE BASEMENT!”

Do you ever actually listen to the lyrics to an older song you've definitely heard a million times and they just punch you right in the chest like "oh. huh. the more things change..."
Anyway "Revolution" by the Beatles just came up on the radio and feels especially pertinent in these days of the internet.

share your favorite holiday recipe?
Here's a recipe that's been a family favorite for many years, not sure it's from a holiday but I think it would work fine for Christmas as well:
A great recipe to use when you have some leftover mashed potatoes but aren't quite sure what to do with them:
Ingredients:
2 pounds leftover potatoes (I often make this with red potatoes)
1 cup heavy whipping cream (I like to use the stuff labeled "heavy cream" but regular whipping cream will do)
1 cup milk
2 tbsp butter (cut into pieces to be used as little as possible)
Put the milk, cream, and butter in a pan and heat to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring frequently. Once boiling, reduce heat to medium-low, add the mashed potatoes, and simmer covered until desired consistency is reached. (This took me about 30 minutes the first time I made this, so I imagine it would take less time with a larger pan.)

"One morning after Roll-call, I was exploring the environs of the camp when I discovered the remains of what had been a large bonfire. The surviving pieces were interesting: Fascist uniforms worn by school-children during indoctrination training, and along with them were little wooden rifles and kindergarten books praising Mussolini [...] How in Gods name can adults do this to children? To pervert their minds, and yet even today the indoctrination goes on. China. Russia. Our own democracies corrupt with pornography and Media Violence. As my father once said, "It will only last forever."

Alice Liddell: The Vial of Hearts. Whether I fell or was about to drown, I didn’t lose it. Before I realised it, it came back. Even though I couldn’t return home, it ended up returning to me. (I can’t remember, but....it feels terribly stalker-like, like a curse.) However, I couldn’t let go of it. Even now, with all my memories gone, I continued to hold onto it. (Was it something that essential to me? Or, maybe it really is cursed.....) If it was just a cursed item, then I wouldn’t be satisfied until I’d punched the person who’d given me such a dangerous item at least once.
