Winter Wonderland Day 1 : Cookies & Warm Drinks
“Baking Love”
It has been a month since Lucy started taking classes and she thinks it’s about time she put her baking skills to test. Decides she’s going to bake cookies. Enough for all of her friends, and of course Natsu and Happy.
It’s pretty fun actually. The blonde glances at the clock once before quickly making a list. First checks off the dry ingredients - flour, sugar, baking powder, soda, salt and chocolate chips. Then the wet ones - eggs, milk, flavorings and chocolate. She has all of them. And a jar of marshmellows, Natsu likes them.
As she sets the bowls, spoons and mixer on the counter, a strong pair of arms wrap themselves around her waist from behind and a head nuzzles into the crook of her neck. She almost squeals for a second but dissolves into a fit of giggles at the ticklish feeling. It makes Natsu chuckle.
“Natsu,” she huffs, “Hey, it tickles!” He spins her around and presses their foreheads together. “Were you baking cookies without me?” “Mhm, I thought I’d surprise you.”
Natsu hums, “How about we do it together?” He smiles when she nods. It’s always more fun when they’re together anyways.
With Natsu, it’s rather easy. He’s better and faster than the stove or the oven. It doesn’t take him more than a few seconds to melt the butter and a large bowl of chocolate and marshmellows. Though the pinkette doesn’t get much liberty in using his powers to keep the house from being destroyed. It obviously won’t be the first time.
Although, Lucy definitely didn’t expect him to be so efficient in cracking eggs. Heck, even better than her. She watches in awe as he mixes the wet ingredients carefully, without spilling at all. The batter turns out to be perfect. The blonde wonders if he has been secretly taking classes.
“Who knew you’d be so good at this,” Lucy teases while stirring the dry ingredients. “Maybe you could teach me someday.”
Natsu puts the mixer away and laughs. “I suppose it’s a compliment?”
“It is.”
They discuss their holiday plans while Lucy slowly pours the dry mixture into the batter, shows him how to properly stir it with the spatula. They share looks every once in a while, smiling and enjoying each other’s company. Natsu insists on adding extra melted chocolate and marshmellows, hmphs and pouts like a child when Lucy refuses. She says they already had enough.
Once they’re done, Lucy moulds the dough into flat disks and puts them in the fridge.
“We’ve to chill it for sometime.”
Natsu nods in understanding, although with a mischievous look, but before she can ask him about it, war ensues. He throws a handful of flour at her, Lucy accidentally gets it on her hair trying to escape. Some of it enters her mouth. She cringes and returns the favor by throwing some at him. However, he successfully dogdes it. Making her groan in frustration.
“That’s not fair! And don’t laugh at me!”
Natsu presses his lips together to hold back his reaction, “You look beautiful Luce.” The blonde scowls and throws another fistful of flour. This time it hits the side of his face and earns him a victorious grin.
“Now who looks better?!” The blonde sticks out her tongue playfully.
The pinkette gives her a sly look before swiftly grabbing her under the arms and setting her on the counter. Lucy gasps from the abrupt movement. Her breath hitches when he eases into the gap between her legs, placing his hands on both sides and smirks at her. Her face turns red at the close proximity and his intense stare.
“Natsu, what-” He cuts her off, moving further close and rubs his cheek against her own. Lucy exhales when he pulls away, calming her heart. She glares at him, now there’s flour on her face too. Natsu chuckles, “Now we both look the same.” “Natsu!” She smacks him in the shoulder. They keep bickering for nearly an hour, before calling it a day.
“Okay, how about we make some hot chocolate?” Natsu’s face lights up at the idea, his enthusiasm makes Lucy giggle. She brings cocoa powder and the bag of chocolate chips while he takes out the saucepan.
“Is he staying over at Fairy Hills again?” The blonde asks, heating the milk in the pan. Natsu hands her the spatula, hums. “Carla is all he needs.” “Right.” She laughs, whisking in cocoa powder, sugar and chocolate chips. She decides to leave him to watch over it as she fetches some other things.
“Please add some vanilla extract, it’s over there. I’ll bring the cookie sheet and cutters.”
“No worries. Don’t you need that paper too, for the cookies?” He reminds, not removing his eyes from his work. “I forgot the name.”
She raises a brow. “You mean parchment paper?”
“Yes! That one.” He seems relieved to have remembered the name, further fueling her previous theory that he probably sneaks off to baking classes when she’s not around. If that’s even possible.
“I’ve watched Mirajane since I was ten, she used to make me and Gray sit there while she experimented with all sorts of food.” Now that makes sense. She watches him shake his head at the memory, fondly. “Guess it benefited me in the end.”
“Yep, Mister Baker!” “Hey! Don’t call me that!”
They break into a laugh together.
After a while, Lucy takes out the dough from the freezer and flours it before spreading it out. “I should move into the dorms, it’s cheaper that way. What do you think?” She muses while preparing the baking sheet. The pinkette frowns and shakes his head, continuing to stir the liquid.
“I won’t like that.”
“And why’s that?” “I won’t be able to crash at yours so often unlike now,” he admits, “Erza would just kick me out.” It makes her giggle. Because he’s right.
“That’s fair, I guess.”
They continue to chat and tease each other for fun. All the while Lucy cuts different shapes - starts, hearts, fishes, bears, flowers, snowflakes and some round ones as well and covers them in chocolate chips and sanding sugar. Then puts them into the preheated oven. And Natsu pours the hot chocolate in the mugs.
“Now’s time to decorate!” She says. That’s the best part. Natsu bumps his fists together, “I’m all fired up! Let’s do it!”
They decorate their respective mugs with chopped chocolates, whipped cream and of course, marshmellows. Lucy rolls her eyes as he tries to sneak some into his mouth. He sheepishly smiles. They look at each other, excited, when the oven beeps. It means the cookies are all ready. Finally.
Natsu sets the tray on the counter meanwhile Lucy turns off the oven. Takes a brownish cookie and breaks it into half then dips both into the hot chocolate. She pops one into her mouth and lifts one to his. Natsu doesn’t waste any time, takes it into his mouth. After finishing his bite, he moves forward to press a kiss to her forehead and Lucy leans into him.
The best evening in a while. She raises her mug for a toast, “Cheers Natsu!”
“Cheers Luce!” Natsu beams, briefly bumping their glasses together and the clinking sound fills their ears. “We should do this more often!”
She agrees, “We should.”

Nightmares [NaLu]
Tumblr media
an: this is a short story that my mind conjured for Nalu week which is themed bittersweet/angst. Today's prompt is nightmares, hence the title. Angst is not my favoured genre to write for as I am far too soft-hearted to want to see beloved characters in pain but it is always fun to work on new ideas so I hope this has come out okay? @thenaluarchive
pairing: Natsu Dragneel x Lucy Heartfilia
warnings: SFW, angst, nightmares, mentions of violence and death, dark imagery and themes, regrets and worries, Natsu just needs a hug, Lucy is his guiding light, Zeref isn't a villain (I will die on this hill), minor spoilers for 100 Year Quest
Masterlist
Tumblr media
Dreams – warm and golden.
Fragments of long-forgotten memories that he shouldn’t possibly be able to recall, yet they played out in the calm space of his subconscious. To him, this was reality and not the concoction of his overactive brain. The tall, lush grass tickled against his bare toes, the scorching heat of the midday sun beat down upon his pink hair and a black haired boy chased eagerly after him.
Joyous laughter rang merrily through the vibrant blue cloudless sky. His heart felt so full that it might just burst right out of his tiny chest. The sweet sound of his brother calling his name through gasping giggles only spurred him on to run faster, sure that he could outrun him if only he kept going.
A small house came into view as he turned in a tight arc, hoping to find some place to dive behind cover and change the game from chase to hide and seek. Curls of snow-white smoke spouted from the rickety chimney, the roof tattered in places but despite the scruffy appearance, the home was filled to capacity with love.
The young boy couldn’t see the patched paintwork walls, the crumbling bricks of the chimney stack or the window frames that were loose and rotten in places. All he saw were the smiling faces of his family; the tall figure of his father with hair the same cotton candy pink as his own, the warm arms of his mother that would embrace both her sons each and every time she could and the black tuft of hair that dared to defy gravity on his older brother’s head.
Things were perfect for the Dragneels and little Natsu didn’t have a care in the world…
A raven flew from its branch with an ominous caw. Gusts of wind whipped from out of nowhere, enough force behind them to make the small boy falter in his pace and it was all that was needed for his pursuer to grasp his shoulder. A hand that was much too large for a child rested heavily, dried blood caked beneath the fingernails and skin as pale as a ghost.
He was no longer a boy, Natsu stood tall in the ruins of a building that he knew all too well.
His chest heaved with each breath he took whilst burning pain raced along his ribs. Skin coated in a grimy mixture of sweat and blood, he felt unclean and broken. So utterly destroyed by the sight that lay at his feet; the bodies of two lovers entwined, it was enough to send him crashing to his knees.
Natsu worried over the fate of Zeref’s soul, would he be damned for the rest of eternity in a place he did not belong? Destined to writhe in agony as flames far superior to those of the Dragon Slayer licked at his flesh? His stomach roiled with that unpleasant thought and tears fell freely.
This was his nightmare.
The place his mind took him to more often than he wished to admit. For how long he would spend grieving the loss of his brother as well as the frail-looking First Master, he did not know. At times it felt like he would spend days here, watching as the corpses rotted before him, unable to do anything about it. Other times the ghosts of Zeref and Mavis would appear to taunt him, throwing accusations at him for letting them die.
He wondered what he was in store for tonight, pain laced his mind and made him whimper from the incessant barbs of a thousand venomous wasps. Each one was a reminder that he could not keep everyone alive, and wasn’t strong enough to prevent the death of his brother.
Zeref had made mistakes, but who hadn’t? He had come to terms with the machinations of a mind warped by the cruelty of a God that demonstrated no mercy or understanding of human curiosity. How wicked a fate it would be to endure eternal life whilst all those he loved around him turned to dust – a result of his love.
Indifference and hatred were the only way to keep others alive and centuries of those emotions had taken their toll on his dear brother.
Now, as he wiped at his tear-filled eyes and quietly sobbed for the missed opportunities, he braced himself for the onslaught of pain.
~
Lucy became aware of the stilted movements by her side over the period of several minutes. At first, she had fought against the rush of consciousness that tried to pull her from the adorable dream she was having, but it seemed a fruitless endeavour.
She felt cooler than normal, and that was the first indicator that things were not as they should be. The absence of the warm embrace of her beloved was enough for her eyes to snap open, lids blinking rapidly as she adjusted to the pitch-black room. It was clearly the middle of the night, no time for her to be awake but she was needed, desperately so.
Low whimpers met her ears and sent the wings of sorrowful moths to flutter against her insides. The blonde rolled as cautiously as she could manage, to find where in the bed Natsu was. Her heart panged anew as she spied him curled into a fetal position by the very edge of the mattress, bare from the waist up and trembling.
She worried he was cold, but the gentle touch of her fingers confirmed the opposite – he was slick with sweat and burning as hot as a furnace. Even the softest of touches caused him to cower, even more, burying his head further into his chest with his arms raised protectively around him.
Her fierce and courageous Dragon Slayer was suffering through a nightmare and she had to bring him back. Only she could coax him to return to her side, the lit candle that burned bright in the void of the darkness and directed him to safety.
Lucy scooted closer to his back and wound a protective arm over his middle, all the while she cooed in his ear – not words only reassuring noises much like a mother would hush her baby. It was hard to be the big spoon when she was so much smaller in every way than the male she called her partner.
Yet, she managed it.
Given his curled posture, her knees rested against his butt and her front curved against his spine. Lucy folded a pillow beneath her head to raise her up enough to press her chin against his shoulder and speak directly into his ear.
His hand swatted at her like she was a pesky fly, frightened whimpers sounding into the perfect black void. She merely chuckled at his lame attempts to protect himself, it was laughable. If Natsu Dragneel wanted to dislodge her, he had the power and then some to do so.
The laughter died in her throat as realisation hit her like a bullet between the eyes. This was reminiscent of other times she had awoken to his bad dreams, specifically the times when Natsu seemed to be trapped within the mindset of his younger self. The occasions were few and far between – or so she thought – but they were never easy to get him to rouse from them.
“Natsu,” she cooed, “can you hear me, baby?”
A little grunt was the only response, but the shivering halted and his breathing evened out slightly. Her fingers slid to the hair that fell across his face, still mostly hidden by the arm that obscured his eyes, nose and mouth but his brow was exposed. The locks were damp at the edges but the majority felt as soft as downy feathers as she lazily brushed through the strands, pushing them back from his face. The scrunch of his eyebrows told of his mistrust and wariness.
“Can you speak to me?” she asked on a whim.
“Don’t wanna,” came the timid yet petulant reply.
The blonde hummed reassuringly as she contemplated her next move, wondering how she could gain the trust of a scared little boy that likely did not recognise her for the important person she was to Natsu the adult. She settled against his back, nose running along the curve of his shoulder blade.
“Hmm, I can tell something is wrong. Wanna tell me what is scaring you?”
The silence gives way to snuffles, the arm covering his face moving only enough to allow him to speak without sounding muffled. His lips are tipped down, chin trembling gently as his lips part.
“Want my brother back.”
“I know baby,” she soothes, fighting back the first well of her own tears as she listens to the innocent confession of the childlike soul that resides within Natsu.
Lucy had lost count of the conversations she and Natsu had had discussing this very matter. The Dragon Slayer was wounded more gravelly than he often let on in regards to the demise of Zeref. It had taken longer for Lucy to be swayed over the reasoning behind the Black Wizard’s motives. She had struggled to overlook the threat he had posed to the entire Kingdom of Fiore, and specifically to Natsu.
“He – he’ll be lonely without me,” he continues and the quiver in his voice is enough to make Lucy feel like she swallowing past glass in her throat.
“Natsu, my sweet boy. Remember where he is? Where his soul resides now? You haven’t forgotten, have you?”
His body relaxes a little, the tight curl of his posture loosening up to allow Lucy the opportunity to more completely wrap herself around him in hopes of offering him solace from her own body and soul.
“W-where?”
The soft lilting hum that she has been maintaining between the short exchange of words pauses once more. Her fingers stroke along his forearm and rest over the top of his clenched fist.
“Zeref is happy in the Heaven you created within your heart. You love him so dearly that you ensured he had a special place to go to when he died. Your compassion is limitless, and although you may appear hot-headed to others, those who know the true Natsu, know that you are the very best of Fairy Tail.”
The words are lumpy and rough as the blonde loses her grip on her own sadness. Salty tears drip upon the searing skin of his shoulder and run in rivers towards the sheets below their cocooned bodies.
~
For the first time, the sequence of his nightmare shifts to an outcome he has not seen before. The ruined Fairy Tail guildhall dissolved before his eyes, the remaining bricks and mortar rising into the air and slipping away into nothingness. The corpses of Zeref and Mavis, which he had been forced to witness rotting, frozen in place with eyes unblinking and stinging from his torture, disappeared instantly.
Finally, he could blink and when his eyes reopened, he found himself in a place he had only seen once before. Filled with fluffy clouds, brilliant sunlight and light breezes that swept the sound of joy and laughter around freely.
Someone tapped on his shoulder and Natsu whirled instantly with his heart racing and defences lifting. The sight that met his gaze was one of sheer ecstasy. Zeref – happy, whole and smiling. For a moment he didn’t know what to do and his brother seemed to sense this.
Zeref’s arms opened wide in invitation and Natsu needed no more to fall into the brotherly embrace. Their relationship may have been strained to the point of almost snapping, but in the end, they were still family and Natsu refused to give up on his family.
For a moment he felt like his younger self once again, tiny fingers clutching into the robe of his older brother, refusing to allow him to back out of the hug. Zeref chuckled against the crook of his neck and smoothed his fingers through Natsu’s messy locks.
It seemed like an age that they stood there in the brotherly hug as the young Dragon Slayer wept for all that he had endured in this dream and every previous iteration. He didn’t know what had caused the shift from nightmare back to dream and it seemed that his elder sibling heard his internal question.
“You have someone very special to thank for bringing you back here,” he said softly.
As they broke apart, they were adults again and Zeref stepped back as a healthy and whole Mavis slotted herself against his side and placed her hand tenderly upon the black haired male’s chest.
Natsu could think to do nothing but smile, his grin wide and toothy as always but a hint of melancholy still lined his eyes. He could hear soft humming that sounded like it was coming from within his own head, it was familiar and comforting.
“Lucy found you suffering in the darkness and brought you back into the light. My dear brother, do not worry over my fate. I have much to atone for but your loving heart has given me a place to dwell in happiness whilst I do my best to keep Mavis here happy in turn.”
The second Zeref spoke Lucy’s name, her beautiful face shone within his mind’s eye and it was as if she were giving him a hug from behind, yet he could not see her. Warm breath tickled his ear, familiar vanilla filled his nose and ghostly fingers carded into his hair right down to the scalp.
Heat enveloped his heart and he knew that she was there with him – his guiding light.
He nodded at the sincere expression on Zeref’s face, the soft radiance of love that emitted from the couple and it reminded him of his feelings for his own blonde beauty that continued to save him over and over again. He wiped the back of his hand across his eyes to clear away the remnants of his tears, swallowing thickly to clear his throat.
“You gonna – gonna be okay?” he asked the man once thought to be the most evil mage that ever lived.
Zeref tsked whilst Mavis giggled, walking off to give the boys a moment of privacy. She waved cheerfully at Natsu. His vision was beginning to haze over as if he was looking through a smudged window, he blinked trying to clear it but failing.
“I don’t need you worrying over me, Natsu. You still live and have many adventures to come. Send Lucy my love and thank her for being such unwavering support for you,” he replied.
“It’s time to go home baby brother,” he whispered, lifting a hand to give a final squeeze to Natsu’s shoulder, “you will not return to that nightmare vision, understood?”
Even in death Zeref was not to be denied and for once, Natsu nodded in agreement rather than argue.
He was fighting against the hands pulling at him, tugging him into consciousness. Knowing that he would return to Lucy but wishing but a moment longer to look upon his brother’s face. A face not known for warm smiles but things change, as do people and he was glad of the happiness that shone within his obsidian eyes.
“Goodbye nii-chan,” Natsu murmured only loud enough for the recipient to hear and beamed at the look of joyous shock that struck upon Zeref’s face.
~
Lucy continued to hum her endless tune, fingers moving in repeated patterns through his hair and over his cheeks and occasionally cooing words of incitement to return to her. At long last, his body stiffened and all at once, relaxed.
Natsu stretched out his limbs that had been locked in the protective posture as Lucy scooted back to give him some space. She had barely moved an inch before she was pulled back, a strong arm winding around her waist and hauling her half across his torso.
Midnight eyes swam with tears despite the half-smile playing on his lips. Worry gnawed at her insides yet it did not linger for long.
“Thank you, Lucy, for finding me in the abyss and leading me out. Zeref sends his love and reminded me to stop worrying over things already played out.”
A calloused thumb ran the length of her jaw until he cupped her cheek and lifted his head to kiss her lips. It seemed he poured every ounce of his gratitude and love into this one sweet, lingering kiss.
“Anytime, Natsu.”
Lucy allowed herself to sink into the sensation of being draped over his body, arms and legs entwined as their heartbeats fell into a synchronised rhythm. Soothing hands rubbed at her spine as if she were the one in need of comfort, and yet she knew he needed to be seen as doing something for her, never content with being passive.
“Can we talk about my – my nightmare?” he asked quietly, his voice hushed by the way he spoke directly into her golden hair.
Her heart tugged as Natsu looked to her again for solace, willing to open himself up and show her his deepest fears. The blonde squirmed herself around until she was comfortable, earning herself a moan of pleasure from the Dragon Slayer in the process.
“Of course, I’m all ears.”

sorry but genuinely what is so hard about running a ship blog? isn't it just reblogging things?
it can be if that's how you want to run it, but if you're running it the way that aan runs and i assume the nalu archive, it's kind of a bit more complicated than that?
you have to constantly be tracking the ship tag to stay consistent, but you have to figure out what ship tags you're tracking. do you only track #nalu? do you want to use #ft nalu or #natsu x lucy or #lucy x natsu? because some people don't use one or all of those tags. when you go through the tags do you reblog everything at once, do you schedule it or do you queue it? with aan we can't queue recent posts because we consistently have a backlog of 800+ posts in our queue of old content, so if i'm reblogging a bunch of stuff at a time i have to manually schedule each post. if you're also posting the individual characters (which we don't, it'd be way too much work) that's extra tags and extra posts you have to track. that's not to mention the stuff in the tag that isn't nalu.
then you have to consider what it is you're willing to reblog. if you're a decent person you'll avoid reblogging stolen/reposted art, which is difficult when there seems to be so much of it today. there are the obvious offenders but sometimes people pop up and their art theft can be easily mistaken as just a new artist popping up on the scene, so you have to be careful. for some reason people are posting a bunch of gruvia in the nalu tag, or people will make a personal post saying how they're going to work on a nalu fic in the future and put that in the tag, but neither of those are relevant so you probably wouldn't reblog them, so it just takes up your time scrolling through the tag. that brings up the question of other ships. are you willing to reblog nalu arts that have other ships in it? what about other natsu and lucy ships? does gratsulu count as nalu? how are you goign to tag it? because i personally have gra/lu blacklisted because i am not a fan, but you have to be sure that it's tagged correctly so people like me can filter it out.
tagging is a whole other beast because you have to figure out how you're going to tag. what tags are you going to use? and then you have to make sure you're consistent with it too. you can't start using #fan art, and then change to using #fanart. to be completely honest i still don't know if the aan tag is #manga cap or #manga caps. if there's more than one person working on the blog you have to make sure you're both using the same tags. then you have to figure out how to tag things that are in a gray area in your tags. is this post a manga cap, an edit, a gif?
and that's just if you're only reblogging recent posts.
if you're hosting an event that's graphics and posts you need to make. im so lucky that i have hailey who's willing to do all the art for free and that i have a passable experience in making graphics. there's decisions to be made about when/where/how to host it. if i had to list out all the problems we had hosting nalu week this year because we went in thinking it would be easy, it would be like 10 pages long.
that's not even getting into the politics of it all. there are some people who are just not going to like how you run the blog or the event. people say stuff, whether privately or publicly. some people have issues with there being more than one blog for a ship, some people just don't like the ship.
this is by no means a "don't make a ship blog post". i want there to be a million blogs dedicated to all things nalu because i love nalu so much, but running a ship blog well is deceptively difficult. you think it's going to be easy because well, you already run your own blog, how hard can it be?
this is the stuff that i wish someone had told me when we started up aan. it would have saved me a lot of grief in the long run if i knew what i was getting myself into.

Quarantine memories fic hoarding craze for @thenaluarchive
— thank you to @phoenix-before-the-flame for helping jump start this fic 💜
It was Natsu Dragneel’s absolute favorite time of the day. 1 pm for him, and 8 am for Lucy, his… well, right now they were just online friends separated by distance and priorities. But judging by how he talked about her to friends, you’d never know it. They’d met three years ago on Twitch through a random chat stream about an anime series, and he continued following Lucy on her writing streams. Three years ago, she was a sophomore in college while he was in his senior year. Lucy later moved on to a graduate program, but they stayed in touch, growing close. To Natsu, she wasn’t just some girl online but a real friend he cared very much about. His friends called Lucy his online girlfriend. Pfft. He wished he could call her that.
Roughly two thousand miles away, Lucy Heartfilia was hating life. Her curtains were drawn, and a blanket was pulled over her head to drown out the light. The air conditioner was down to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, working against the low-grade fever and pounding migraine born yesterday. Migraines… the bane of her otherwise healthy existence. It was her fault after all, the temptation of a chocolate dessert knowing full well it was one of her triggers brought on said migraine and all she could do was bear it.
Why?
“Stupid hoarders!” Lucy groaned to herself.
As if dealing with a pandemic wasn’t bad enough, people’s selfish reactions to it were worse. A government agency had claimed that acetaminophen products could help with the virus’s symptoms, so what did people do? Panic buying anything and everything they could find containing that drug! The problem for people like Lucy, is the one over the counter medication that helped with her migraines was Excedrine… an acetaminophen product! And she’d just. run. out.
Lucy’s phone rang and she knew exactly who it could be based on the time. So, she clicked the answer button without opening her eyes.
“Hey, Natsu,” she groaned out.
“Morning Lucy! Oh geez, you sound like a frog.”
“Thanks,” she retorted sarcastically. “I’ve got a migraine.”
“Ouch.” Natsu genuinely flinched. He rarely got headaches, but this wasn’t the first time he’d talked to Lucy when she was going through one, so he knew what she was going through. “The meds aren’t helping?”
Lucy sighed. “I ran out. And did you see the news about all the hoarding? Every store here is bought out. It… sucks.”
“I could check around here and send you any I find,” he offered.
“Aww, that’s sweet of you Natsu, but I don’t wanna trouble you.”
“Pfft. Nonsense. I’m sure you’d do the same for me.”
“Thanks, Natsu. I appreciate it.” Lucy smiled through the pain. There’s a good reason her feelings for the man had grown over the years. His sweet and caring, yet fun and goofy, positive personality was an easy drug to get hooked to.
“Anyway, I gotta get back to work.” Natsu whined. “Good morning again, stay hydrated, and I’ll check on you again when I’m finished for the day, okay Lucy? Get some rest.”
“Have a good day at work Natsu.”
“Will now, after hearing your voice. Talk to you later Luce.”
She giggled softly. “Bye, Natsu.”
Lucy shifted under her blanket as she clicked off the phone to lie on her back. His sexy voice did wonders for her mood despite the pain still ravaging it. Now all she had to do was drag herself out of bed to eat something and drink water. She never had an appetite when she got these migraines, but it was a necessary fuel to fight it. All Lucy had left were extra strength Tylenol, so she could only hope it would at least take the edge off until the migraine ran its course.
Like so many others, this pandemic had really taken a toll on Lucy’s psyche. It’s not as if she went out a lot before it took hold, but just the fact it made going out dangerous brought different emotions to the situation. School had moved online which sucked all its own, she missed casually hanging out with friends on campus, and simply longed for the freedom of leaving her apartment as she pleased. But she understood the precautions of a quarantine. Frankly, she agreed with the city’s efforts to keep them as safe as possible no matter how many grumbled about it. Did it make it easier? No. But it was a necessary evil.
They weren’t completely trapped, could shop for necessities, visit family or friends, just encouraged to limit such gatherings as a safety precaution. If you went out, wear a mask, and just don’t stand too close to other people. Well, unless Lucy knew the person, why would she want strangers in her personal bubble anyway? And the mask thing? Have you ever been out shopping, and someone just sneezes without covering their mouth? Yeah— seriously, would it kill people to use one?! Why were people so selfish during times like this? Not everyone, but too many. Just like with all the hoarding frenzies that swept through cities, it was frustrating and— “Ugh…” being in a pain-driven bad mood was sure bringing her down today.
But despite all the external frustrations, the feelings of isolation from being in a quarantine for months were probably the most mentally exhausting part. It was lonely being so far away from home during a pandemic. Lucy’s been in college for five years and while she’s made friends in the new city, she was starting to crave comfort instead of an empty apartment. Her life online was one of the few things that made her happy, like Natsu’s daily calls, and kept her sane.
Natsu… her face heated up every time she thought about the man. They didn’t have a lot of hobbies in common, but he was always so supportive and made her laugh like no other could. Where they lacked in commonality, was made up in ease of conversation. It hadn’t taken very long for their online chats to feel more like an old friend and less like a faceless stranger. Over the years they’d talked about meeting in person one day after she finished school. It also helped that he was from a city not too far from where she came from, so if she chose to move back it would be convenient. But she also loved the new city she called home. Oh well, Lucy sighed. It was a decision still a couple of years away to make.
The next morning, Lucy woke up to find her migraine had finally given up. She could still feel the little bastard hiding, simmering somewhere ready to strike, but if it stayed mellow, it was something she could tolerate. Throughout the day, Lucy wasted no time in catching up on the homework she couldn’t finish the day before and making sure to stay hydrated with food in her stomach.
Lucy’s phone rang around 2pm.
“Hi Natsu, how was work?”
“Same ole, same ole,” he chuckled. “And how are you? Still feeling, okay?”
“Yeah, it hasn’t come back.”
“That’s great!”
Lucy could hear a lot of background noise, so she asked about it. “Oh, you’re not home yet?”
“Nah, and the commuters are being extra noisy today,” he responded benignly. “Anyway, tonight I won’t have time to talk cause I got a project due for work I need to finish.”
“Oh, that’s okay. Yeah, I’m still catching up from yesterday too and Levy’s dropping by for dinner.”
They chat for a few minutes about their day as Natsu waited for transportation. Lucy knew he used the subway to and from work, but today it sounded a little different, noisier and she swore there were engines instead of the normal train sounds. Maybe it was static. Finally, Lucy caught the muffled words now boarding.
“Shucks, time for me to go,” Natsu cut through. “Sweet dreams Lucy! I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”
“Good night, Natsu!”
Lucy spent the afternoon relaxing online, chatting with friends and gaming. Her friend Levy McGarden later dropped by with take-out food for dinner and the two women caught up on random topics while movies droned on the television. They were both in grad school, so during the semester there wasn’t a lot of time to hang out, but they made do. Lucy was also doing a paid internship at a local magazine 4 days out of the week as part of her master’s program. She really enjoyed working there under one of the senior editors. He made it a fun learning experience.
Life was almost perfect except for the background isolation of the pandemic. Lucy was glad she wasn’t one of the individuals affected by jobs cuts, but it still got under her skin to feel trapped in a way. It was nice with her friend over... ‘Maybe I should see if Levy wants to become roommates?’ She wondered as she drifted off to sleep. The apartment would sure feel a lot less empty.
A knock at the door roused Lucy from her sleep. She blinked and yawned, looking at the alarm clock and that said 9 am the next morning. ‘Natsu didn’t call,’ she thought how odd. Maybe he slept in after working late.
Lucy dragged herself out of bed, throwing on a robe to answer the front door. “Gimme a sec,” she called out as she neared it.
“UPS delivery, ma’am.” The male voice responded.
‘UPS?’ Lucy grew confused. She didn’t remember ordering anything through them, but maybe she’d forgotten?
She peaked out of the peep hole, but all she could see was the box being held up. Okay a little weird, but some of the delivery people did that to show they were legitimate service people. Lucy slowly opened the door but kept the chain lock on while peering through the gap. But what she saw next brought on instant tears.
“H-How?” Her voice stammered out as her fingers quickly undid the lock and opened the door wide.
There Natsu stood holding a small brown box, dressed in a uniform of sorts, with a mask hanging under his chin, and wearing a goofy grin.
Lucy snorted a laugh as her eyes crinkled in happiness. “Is that a Halloween costume?”
“Yeah,” his smile widened, and hand scratched his head. “Surprise delivery,” Natsu held out the box, “for Lucy Heartfilia.”
“What is it?” She asked as she took it from him.
“Oh, I um found you Excedrine.”
Lucy opened the box to find 4 bottles. “You certainly did,” she laughed. “But why’d you bring it yourself?”
“It was quicker than the mail and… I hoped…” Natsu’s mannerism grew sheepish and tentative, “it was about time we finally met in person?”
Her face softened with a smile. “It truly is.” Lucy gestured into the apartment. “Please, make yourself at home.”

Preserving holiday cheer thru 'virtual reunions'
#PHnews: Preserving holiday cheer thru 'virtual reunions'
MANILA – With only three weeks to go before Christmas, planning getaways and gatherings with loved ones has been a part of the Filipinos' way of commemorating the season. However, with the current situation due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), people would have to defer seeing their loved ones from other places physically as authorities discouraged the holding of reunions for the holidays.
For some, being prohibited to hold Christmas and New Year's Day reunions due to the pandemic means lesser holiday cheer as Filipinos are known to bond more with their closest of kin and friends during the season.
Trisha Alcantara, a 30-year-old marketing executive from Sampaloc, Manila, said the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has certainly affected the way Filipinos traditionally interact during the holidays.
"Human connection (during the Yuletide Season) is important to all of us, which is why not being able to physically spend time with family and friends can be a shock to our value system this year," she added in an interview with the Philippine News Agency on Thursday.
While technological advances in communications can help fill in the gap, Trisha admitted that seeing loved ones in the flesh is irreplaceable.
"It's so sad that instead of spending time together during the Yuletide season, mag-oonline calls na lang kayo (you would just talk to each other via online calls) or online chat. Nakakalungkot naman po diba? Hindi naman ito yung nakasanayan nating tradisyon (It's sad right? This is not the tradition we have been used to) but we need to comply para sa ikabubuti ng bawat isa kahit mahirap gawin. Kahit miss na miss mo na yung family mo (for everyone's own good, even if it is difficult. Even if you really miss your family a lot)," added Alcantara, who has family members in Mangatarem, Pangasinan.
She is also seriously thinking of whether she will risk it to go home during the Yuletide Season or just settle for video chats or calls with her loved ones.
"Actually po, iniisip ko nga kung uuwi ako or talagang via chat or video calls ko na lang muna sila makikita (I'm thinking if I would go home or would just settle with chat or video calls just to see them), Staying connected to loved ones right now is more important now so let's make sure na kahit di kayo magkakasama, happy pa rin yung celebration nyo (that even if you are not together, you would still have a happy celebration) with simple online conversation or calls," she added.
Alcantara added that she is planning to suggest to her family that a "virtual reunion" be held so that at least they will be together even if not physically present.
To do this, Alcantara suggested that Facebook or online "invites" be created to ensure everyone is on time for the virtual reunion and has food and drinks ready for the event.
"Get one person to organize music for everyone to enjoy, create a fun, vibey atmosphere kahit online lang kayo nag-uusap (even if you are just talking with each other online). Though I missed chilling with them in person, at least safe naman po ang bawat isa (at least everyone is safe)," she added.
Earlier, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez said the Christmas Holidays will be different amid the global health crisis.
“It would be a subdued Christmas; less of the big reunions, more of intimate reunions,” Lopez said. He said mass gatherings will still be prohibited due to risk of spreading Covid-19. There will be more virtual reunions than physical get-together during Christmas season, he added.
Meanwhile, for Third Anne Malonzo, 30, a reporter residing in Taytay, Rizal, connecting with loved ones and friends online is not a bad idea considering that the Covid-19 pandemic is still ongoing.
"I don’t see any problem with this. Whether we see each other in person or not. Families will remain as families and it's still better to be safe than sorry. Besides, there are many other occasions that we can spend time together after this pandemic in which we no longer have to worry about being infected by the virus," she added.
Malonzo also said she will take advantage of the digital technology to send her regards to her loved ones as a means of reaching out during the Christmas Season.
Meanwhile, 32-year-old banker Francesca Nalus, a resident of Quezon City, said she is a little sad as she will not be able to visit or have reunions with family and friends during the holidays.
"A little sad because even though it is nice to see people through video calls, it still feels different celebrating the holiday season together physically," she added. However, Nalus said she understands the reason for this as this move by the government will help in preventing more Covid-19 infections.
And instead of face-to-face reunions, she said Zoom and or other messaging apps that have video call options Facebook messenger, Whatsapp, Viber can be utilized for "virtual reunions".
Meanwhile, Michelle Elvin Panganiban, 34, an accountant, from Meycauyan, Bulacan, said not having a chance to reunite with her loved ones this Yuletide Season is a bit sad.
"A little sad because I can’t hug them. It’s so hard to express how much I love them," she added.
But Michelle said she understands the reason for this as this is needed for the safety and well-being of everyone.
"We must endure it now to stop the spread of the virus so we could have a worry-free gathering in the future," she added.
But for Nadine Agleron, 35 and a housewife in General Trias, Cavite, said having no physical contact with loved ones during the Yuletide Holidays is a sensible one as safety, health, and wellness should be the priority of everyone.
Also, she added that for those wishing to interact online or virtually, there is an app called Houseparty which is similar to Zoom.
"It's like Zoom, with games, videoke, etc. You can also prepare games that can be played online," Nadine said. (PNA)

Halloween games prompt chosen by @dragonlovesstars for @thenaluarchive Falling for You event. Focusing on Nalu only in this story. I had an idea going in, sorry but yeah... the characters totally hijacked this story and idk what happened 😅
Most of the Fairytail guild celebrated Halloween like they did most holidays... or really most normal days, by drinking and partying. But that never stopped Mira from setting up games just in case some of the members were willing to play. The boozers got a game of Trick or Treat where they had to pick from shot concoctions that could be a nice treat or a yucky trick. Younger members were off playing spooky themed charades, and surprisingly a few chose trivia.
As for Natsu and gang, they signed up for a special game called Scary Treasure Hunt which Mira promised would garner them the best treasure prize in all of Fiore! She paired them in twos, and sent them off into Magnolia to search for this mysterious treasure with only a clue to the first location. All in all, five teams were playing for the ‘prize,’ and not so surprisingly, they were paired in couples. With any type of challenge, Natsu was pumped up and ready to play! So, as soon as Mira said ‘go,’ he was dragging Lucy out the door because there was no way Gray was winning the prize before him!
“Slow down Natsu!” Lucy jerks her partner to a halt. “We haven’t even read the clue yet!”
“Oh, right!” He laughs. “So what does it say?”
Lucy holds out the card and reads out loud. “Instructions. Follow the clues to each location where you’ll be given a riddle and a clue to the next destination. I glide over water and rock to and fro. The canals I may travel, but the docks are my home.”
“What?” Natsu questions. “A boat? That’s not a destination.”
“The answer is right in the clue Natsu,” Lucy rolls her eyes. “The first location is the docks where they tie up the boats.”
“Ohhhh!” He grabs her hand, “well let’s go! Time’s ticking!”
When they reach the tiny Magnolia harbor, the pair search around at each boat looking for their next clue. There were only a few, and most were the smaller boats used to navigate the water channels. Of course, when they did find it, Lucy had to climb aboard to grab the scroll.
“Read it, read it!” Natsu bounces excitedly.
“First your riddle. Salamander, Salamander! The crowd chants with spellbound delight. You’ve come to a crossroad, do you choose left or right?”
“I— don’t get it,” Natsu scratches his head. “Is it talking about me? What the hell is the crossroads?”
“Huh?” Lucy frowns too. “I don’t get it either.”
“Is that all?”
“No, um,” she reads further. “Over the hill and through the lane, to strawberry street we go. Reach for the stars. Hmm, maybe my apartment is the next step?”
“Or the roof?”
“Could be? I guess it’s worth a shot.”
At Lucy’s apartment building, they took the access stairs to the rooftop, but at first, they don’t see anything at all. It wasn’t exactly a big roof to search, yet they saw no scroll. Frustrated, Lucy walked over to the edge facing the street below and rests her arms. Where else on Strawberry street would Mira have sent them if not her apartment? Though, so far, none of this made much sense to her. She looked down at the ground when something stuck to the wall grabbed her attention. “Found it! But I can’t reach it.”
Natsu looks over the edge and realizes he couldn’t reach the scroll either. So, he hopped off the roof, grabbing it as he falls, and landed on the street below. Lucy raced down to meet him.
“Good catch!” She congratulated him. He handed her the scroll and she reads it. “First your riddle. Through a leap, you know no bounds, nor fright of night, just solid ground. Okay this is seriously confusing,” Lucy grumbled, but continued on. “The dead slumber in their beds. We find solace in their peace.”
“I’m gonna guess the cemetery.” Natsu states.
“I agree.”
This really was turning into a hunt, though Lucy was starting to wonder what it meant. All of these locations and clues seemed tied together somewhat, revolving around their lives. Did Mira make it that way so it would be easier? By the time they reached the cemetery, she was no closer to figuring anything out. Lucy shivered at the idea of walking around a cemetery at night. It was eerie, maneuvering around the grave stones, searching aimlessly through the rows for the next scroll. This graveyard had no ties to either of them personally, but just being here made Lucy think about her parents.
After several minutes of searching, they finally found the scroll that was left on top of a headstone. Lucy wrapped her arms around herself tightly, a bit chilled both physically and emotionally.
Natsu comes up from behind Lucy and reaches around to rub her arms to warm her. “You okay?”
“Yeah, must be the wind,” she blamed, but his added heat helped to send those chills away. Lucy opened the scroll. “First your riddle. In the dark, we seek the light, and when we find it, we hold on tight for it will always guide the way home. That’s it,” Lucy turns it over and back, “there isn’t a clue.”
“Could ‘home’ be the clue?” Natsu asks.
“Yeah, but which home? Mine? Yours? Fairytail?”
“Well, she sent us to yours once already, and she probably wouldn’t have us go back to the guild unless we found the treasure, so I’m gonna guess my house.”
Lucy giggles. “That’s pretty smart thinking.”
“I have my moments.” He shrugs.
As they walk back to Natsu’s cottage, it was becoming clear to both of them that this wasn’t really a scary treasure hunt, unless you count putting a scroll in a boat for a slayer or being sent to a creepy cemetery. No, Mira designed this specifically for them to figure out something, but what that was still eluded them.
Once they arrive at Natsu’s cottage, they go inside and start looking around. Again, just like on Lucy’s rooftop, it wasn’t quickly noticed. They search the place from top to bottom and still nothing. Where was it?! Natsu grabs a blanket off the couch to check under it, but drops it again when nothing is found. “Okay,” he laments, “maybe I was wrong and she meant the guildhall.”
“Maybe not...”
He looked in Lucy’s direction, who was staring at his wall of mementoes. And there, pinned up, is the unrolled scroll. “What does it say?” He questioned.
“Your final riddle. They are the ones we run to. Hold us close when we are afraid, soothe us in our melancholy. Laugh with us, cry with us. Protect, nurture, and push us to be better. They are our greatest treasure yet our most feared acceptance. What am I?”
“That’s not a riddle.”
“Well, not exactly... but it has an answer.” Lucy turned around to face him. “It was all about our journey here,” she smiled with moisture building in her eyes. “The day we met, the choice to go with you. That leap of faith cause I knew you’d catch me. You being there for me over and over again. It’s saying you are my greatest treasure.”
“I can understand that cause I always thought you were a treasure. But I don’t understand m the fear part or the ‘what am I’ question.”
“Oh,” Lucy blushed. “I-It’s describing a soulmate because it could be scary to realize when you’ve found yours.” It sure as hell was for her.
Silence gripped the room as Natsu’s face registered a blank stare. Lucy couldn’t tell what he was thinking, and frankly the longer he stayed that way, the more nervous she became. Was he not understanding her? What if he did understand her?! This is exactly the fear factor she had long tried to avoid! “Are you still confused?” She asked hesitantly.
“So... the answer is you’re my soulmate?”
“I guess, yeah you could say that.” Again he just stares and she could almost see the gears turning in his head as he processed her words. “Natsu?”
“Like Lucy and Natsu in Edolas? Or Nack and Lucia in Giltina?”
“Yeah...”
His brows furrowed, then suddenly a grin bursts free. “I got it! Making an egg is our greatest treasure!”
Lucy slaps her forehead. “Oh my Mavis! For the last time, humans don’t come from eggs, and even if we did, y-you don’t even know what it takes to make one.”
“Macao and Gildarts already told me what to do, but I’m still confused. Maybe you could show me?”
“W-what?!” She crisscrossed her arms over her chest.
“But the treasure?!”
“Natsu I’m not having sex with you to win a challenge!”
He walked over unphased and put his hands on her shoulders. “I don’t care about a challenge. I want our treasure.” He smiled wide. “Wouldn’t that be the best Halloween treat ever? I know you don’t think I understand, and I don’t about some of this, but what I do know, is after seeing Nasha, I just thought it would be great to have one of our own.”
“Natsu,” Lucy sighed, “its not right to have kids unless we both love each other.”
“You don’t love me?”
“I-I didn’t say that...”
“Then we agree!” He grins, “please Lucy, let’s make our own hoard of treasures!”
“Whoa! Whoa! Slow down Natsu! W-we just established how we feel but it’s another thing t-to jump into t-that, and we haven’t even kissed yet!”
“Pfft, well that’s easy enough,” he swooped in and placed a rough, sloppy kiss on her lips. “We’re at the crossroads Lucy. Is it trick or treat?”
Lucy was done, her mind was fried and her heart was beating so hard she felt woozy. None of this was how she’d dreamed it would happen, but then again just like their counterparts, maybe the spur of the moment was more their style anyway.
Lucy takes a deep breath. “Treat.”
