I want to talk about Penelope, like from the Odyssey. Because real talk- she is the smartest damn character in the story. Is Odysseus smart? Yeah, he's pretty clever (except when he's being really stupid, of course.) But PENELOPE. We talk about Penelope as faithful and patient, but the woman is also *sooooo smart.*
1. The ruse with weaving the shroud the keeps the suitors at bay for like, a full year? Woman is a genius and boys are stupid. And it would have kept on working if one of the slave girls hadn't let it slip what was going on.
2. OK, let's talk about the competition with the bow. Because Homer keeps it really vague implying that Penelope doesn't recognize Odysseus in disguise. But you're telling me that she has a whole ass conversation with this ~STRANGE~ man and IN THAT INSTANT decides to design a competition that ONLY her husband would *physically* be able to win, AND would leave the winner as the ONLY armed man in the room with the suitors that had been harassing her for years? She knew, and that was a set up.
3. Then after this stranger had done the dirty work for her of killing all the suitors, she then ABSOLUTELY tricks him with a test to make sure that he really IS Odysseus by casually mentioning moving the immovable wedding bed? And Odysseus falls for it? Crafty, tricky, lying, man of many twists and turns, Odysseus is played like a lyre by Penelope, where she can confirm both through his physical skill and through his memories that Odysseus is who he says he is.
She's smarter than Odysseus. Full stop. Smartest character in The Odyssey. And you KNOW that if SHE had been dealing with the cyclops she wouldn't have been dumb enough to tell him her damn name just to gloat.
Penelope would have made it home from Troy in a weekend.

today's hot greek mythology take: the reason why odysseus and penelope are such a good couple is because odysseus is the "mansplain, manipulate, manwhore" half of the relationship and penelope is the "gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss" half
