Enough of this misconception about hygiene in medieval Europe please ^^’

I know it’s oddly funny, but still, let me clarify :)

- People in Medieval Europe were much cleaner than those of the Renaissance, but also of our nineteenth-century grandparents.

- Soaking comfortably while having breakfast, or while working, was not uncommon for rich people. Ladies loved socializing in the water and the European nobility often entertained their guests with baths that could become an opportunity to impress them with the display of the most unbridled luxury.

- Charlemagne was very fond of baths and invited family, friends and occasionally even a crowd of servants and guards, so that sometimes up to a hundred men could find themselves bathing with the king. [You’ve got no chill, Charlie!]

- In Italy the public baths of Ravenna, Pavia, Lucca, Gaeta and Naples have been known and renowned since the VIII century, while those of Pisa, Florence, Rome, Palermo and Salerno were famous in the late Middle Ages. A legacy of the Roman age.

- In London, in the XII century, people advertising public baths became so intrusive that the authorities had to issue regulations, or else the citizens couldn’t sleep in peace.

- A sort of doctor-barbers supervised the correct functioning of the establishment and the maintenance of hygiene standards.

- The Black Plague of 1348 caused the end of this practice. There was in fact the belief that the disease could enter more easily through the pores dilated by the heat, and certainly crowded places became the privileged ground for its spread. 

- Washing was not the only form of hygiene in use in the Middle Ages. Starting from the XI century, collections of precepts to preserve health have also spread. The Tacuina Sanitatis, for example, and the Regimen Sanitatis Salernitanum, were pretty famous.

Headcanon: Nicky and Joe get married once every 50 years or so. It’s always another member of the group who officiates. Next time they insist on Nile officiating, because that’s kind of a rite of passage for them. Andy tells her to bring a comfy chair because Joe’s vows tend to get extremely long (Andy straight out thinks that they only reason they don’t get married more often is because Joe needs a few decades to perfect his next speech).

He woke up at the same time as everyone else in the train, didn’t he? Or am I stupid? I just like to imagine that Booker’s has that exact nightmare a million times and Joe doesn’t really worry about it anymore. Because honestly?
