I was thinking about this earlier. One of the contributing reasons why Percy never saw Nico as a potential romantic partner (or even a proper friend) is because he's always seen him as Bianca's younger brother. He's never seen him as Nico. And before y'all keyboard warriors say, "He was fourteen at the time!" That's not my focus. What I'm saying is he feels guilty. Him taking the prophecy was out of guilt. Him searching for Nico was out of guilt.
On the 'proper friend' part, in MoA, he says that his relationship with Nico was complicated, but then on the topic, he says that he can't bear seeing Hazel hurt/crying because she's his friend.

what we need mental health services to offer is an anger room. where you can go to just scream and break things. like stock it with 20 bucks worth of cheap plates and let patients smash the shit out of them. howl and pound on the walls until they're relieved/satisfied. maybe THEN when my mind is cleared of negative electricity we can discuss the sources of the suffering. like when i did equine therapy (which is the only therapy that ever helped me) they leave you all alone with the horses for an hour and then at the end you verbally process for five minutes. when you're at peace and thinking clearly. smashing objects is a great way to achieve clarity of thought. i speak from years of experience. just ask the holes in my walls.

hiiiiiii thinking abt how mei was super uncomfortable with the idea of mk visiting her house and all of the "normal kid stuff" she wasn't allowed to do and how she and mk share a lot of traits but only the ones that mei's parents wouldn't have approved of. mks literally like. the parts of her she doesnt want to bring home
HEYO! forgive me, i was asleep then had to get to class. also, i wanted to give myself time to actually talk about this because yeah
*pulls you down* listen, listen to me, until 1x03, MK had never even been inside Mei's house. he even states how he "always wanted to see inside Mei's Secret Dragon House," and Mei housesitting the place is the perfect opportunity for him to see what lies inside. AND! if you notice!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SHE IS SHOWN TO BE VERY UNCOMFY AT MK JUST SPECULATING WHAT "SECRETS" ARE HIDING IN THERE. INVITING MK WOULD BE THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF WHAT HER PARENTS ASKED HER TO DO!
but MK is so curious and he's her best friend and he might also just sneak in without her knowing.....so maybe she'll indulge him. housesitting is a lot better with friends than on your own.
anyway, if we go further into the episode, we see a Mei that is very different to our chaotic and confident gal. she's closed-in, cautious, nervous. unlike before, Mei is the one warning others not to touch things, to be careful, and to stay put. in previous episodes, we see her goofing off and being a little gremlin with MK while Pigsy blows a fuse over their antics.
not here though. this is her home. her clan's home. her clan's home full of ancestral heirlooms that she's been told all her lie to keep away from and not touch. respect your family and family tree is very important in Chinese culture (and many other Asian cultures but we're focusing just on one). even the language has different forms of formalities with addressing people (whether in the business environment, home, or school). but this is a very general observation, and i'm sure there are others who can talk about this a lot better.
however, Mei's family is very important to her character, so i will be discussing how it relates to her and her own decisions. on her own, Mei is very free-spirited and is more of a "punch first ask questions later" kind of person. when it comes to her family though, Mei is a lot more toned down and thinks first before acting. she is very aware of the priceless artifacts kept in her home (which is one factor on why she is nervous about inviting MK), and watching how she went about her home was like she was walking on eggshells. she doesn't want to upset and disappoint her parents.
additionally, Mei comes from a very well-off family. she is a part of the Western Sea Dragon clan. her ancestor is Ao Lie, the dragon-horse of the JTTW companions. why am i telling you things you already know? because it shows that Mei's family comes with a lot of history and recognition ("ancient noble dragons," as Mei had said). and with that, comes with the clan wanting to appear respectable in front of others. with such a high status, it is best to look the part, no?
however, Mei isn't really someone who fits into that noble lady box, right? she's outspoken, she's rowdy, she's impulsive. Mei even admit that as a kid she wished to do "normal girl stuff," stuff that wouldn't work out when your house is more of a museum than a home. i'm sure she did try to fit into that box for the good of her parents, but at some point, you come to the realization that that box will never fit you. Mei will never be perfectly noble or have the noble decorum that comes with her upbringing. she will never fit that ideal her parents raised her on (this is an assumption but also, it feels like a given?)
MK is the exact opposite of what Mei was taught to be proper. he is rowdy, likes to have fun, play video games, "roughs and tumble," and be impulsive. he is someone Mei definitely saw as the part of her she could never show her parents. how could they ever accept the side of her that does not care for strict decorum and keeping a house as a museum.
read this excerpt from her mom:
"We may not always see eye to eye, and your friends are...em, unique than we expected. But you are a part of this family, and it is part of you."
ignoring the incredibly sweet ending T^T the mother admits that Mei and her parents do have issues agreeing on what's best for Mei. there is love very clearly shown for between Mei and her parents, but there is still that distance between them. Mei is not the daughter they expected, and they don't always approve of her choices (her friends for example). so, we can figure that Mei is absolutely nervous about how her parents will feel about MK and whether that means they would stop loving her if she ever let down her walls in front of them completely.

It's 100% true that the Roy siblings did not choose to be Logan's children and Tom and Greg and the old guard did choose to work for him so their relationships to Logan are fundamentally different, and the degree of culpability they bear for their own moral degradation is also wildly different. But workplace emotional abuse is also very real and omnipresent in the way Logan treats the people who work for him. And one of the impacts of workplace emotional abuse is creating an extreme attachment to the abuser and becoming less cognizant and even defensive of their abuse towards yourself and others, and in cases where the emotional abuse is institutionalized and systemic it can also create a strong aversion to leaving because your whole sense of personal identity becomes wrapped up in the organization and so being forced to leave can cause an intense psychological crisis. I don't think the situation of working for Logan is at all equivalent to being his child but I also think that it's a bit misguided to imply that Tom and Gerri and Frank and Karl are operating from a place of pure rationality without any undue psychological influences when they make the choice to stay with and support Logan

I hate the way Tumblr eats Asks 😑 (i saved it as a draft while i went to quote a line from the fic and Tumblr was like, "oh food? For me?" Fuck u Tumblr lol)
Anyway! Anon-who-was-writing-the-Timbern-chefAU-fic, ty for letting me know where the fic was! It's rly good so far and im very much looking forward to anything more u upload for it in the future.
ur really getting into the chef-y details and hiring logistics and i love that, it makes it feel very deeply immersive.
Also Tim being so into Bernard's tongue piercing and his bros being like 🤨? Love that. He's so into Bernard already and his brothers can probably tell even tho Tim is Captain Oblivious.
"Queer? I don't think so. Anyone would be entranced by that tongue 😊" lol.
Watching Tim get his gay awakening is gonna be fun.
Also it's good to see Darla! Having her in the fic was a great decision and I would never have thought to do that but it works so well.

normalise saying "I don't have enough information on this topic to have an opinion on it"
and then staying out of it completely rather than going along with wtv opinion u imprinted from three random posts/reels/tweets and having weird misinformed debates with full confidence
#like bro it's ok to not have an opinion on something if you don't know just say i don't know and move on#there's too many fucked up things going on in the world it's perfectly natural to not have proper information on a topic of debate#just remove yourself from said debate theres no needto go marching in with limited information and spreading even more misinformation#i see so many people around my age posting random political stuff be it religious or about lgbtq or women even and they haven't read#a single article about any of these topics ever#their only source is sketchy social media posts or “dark jokes” about a certain community making them think it's cool to shit on them#or random “sigma” edits of things and suddenly the most random stuff becomes everyone's favourite mainstream political affiliation#like have you read a single policy pertaining to this government or do you have a single reason for violently hating a certain community#i understand that some people are genuinely interested in these topics and that is absolutely wonderful it's great that young people have#opinions and commentary on world issues but only when this stems from an area of genuine interest and when at least some effort to be#factual is made not when it's only done because everyone else is doing it and they have some weird sort of fomo at work or they just think#it's funny or wtv without understanding the implications of their words and actions#no one is forcing you to involve yourself in every social issue but the moment you choose to make commentary on a social issue you must take#the responsibility of educating yourself as best you can before you open your mouth

ninjago fandom when ppl stop mischaracterising wu as a one note shitty old guy and realise hes a complex character with just as much of his own trauma as everyone else in the show
Tumblr media
#someday i need to make a proper post abt this bc. it makes me a bit crazy LOL#wu is like first and foremost charatwrised by his desire to be like. The Good Child#its been shown wus Default personality is like this cheeky reckless optimist#from like. eps like never trust a human and also. baby wu. in s8-9#hes rude but hes trusting. very naive in conparison to garmadon whos more reserved and responsible at this point#its only once garmadon gets bitten that he starts to change#once again im begging u guys to read the spinjitzu brothers books. LOL#but over them u can rllyyyy see wu losing this kinda .. naive aspect to him and losing hope in his brother as well#u see him start to doubt himself more and more that garm can be ‘fixed’#which. well. wu follows after the fsm in this aspect#wu very obviously aspires to be like his father (wearing his hat and clothes and using his staff etc)#when the fsm sends them to find a cure for garm.. wu goes with it. despite garms protests that hes not broken#wu has a Lot of responsibilty on him from very younv as the son of the fsm#and even more so once garmadon becomes like. a lost cause and source of evil or whatever the fuck#the fsm is not kind. in the books someone mentions being thrown out of his home after being accused of stealing#and the brothers agree that sounds like him Alright#canonically the reason wu woukdnt climb over the wall was bc he was afraid of his father catching him.#and wu feels like. immense guilt for garmadon being bitten int he first place.#it seems wus coping mechanism for anything hes ashamed of is… to just hide it. or simply Not Tell You#hence things like morro. he never spoke of morro bc of the guilt of failing to care for him properly.. and Partly bc he failed as a teacher#circling abck to wu imitating the fsm.#wu makes mistakes constantly bc thats who he is! deep down hes reckless and naive but hides it behind this like … aloof wisdom#also i think the parallels u can draw in s9 from him growing up w the expecations to save the ninja..#w the expectations HE put on the ninja himself… and also similarities w his (first) childhood#very interesting.#i rlly love the line in crystalised when antonia point sout hes recruited children to fight before#bc u can see him Realise. and i dont think its that he just puts this pressure on the ninja bc he doenst care. he just doesnt See#how hes continuing this awful cycle that started w the fsm INT HE FUCKING DRAGON ONI WAR!!!!!!!!!#anyway i cld talk abt this forver but i ran out of tags WEEEEE!!!#farts

I'm not sure if this has been brought up yet, but as I caught myself doing it, I realized it was very likely a good chunk of others are also - I think having the racist parts included in the poll is going to heavily skew the data anyway because people will, very likely, not feel able to vote for something racist in good conscience, and so the votes the racist screams would have gotten if they weren't racist are lost, thus making the data unusable due to personal bias. not even considering the number of people abstaining completely, dropping the pool of data further! I'm not aware if this has been broached yet, but I think it's definitely worth noting that the data for the racist clips will always be untrustworthy, even if the scream itself is good. On top of all of the other reasons why they should be omitted ofc!
GOD YEAH. i feel so dumb going “🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 well gee you make a good point there 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔” all contemplatively because i’m realizing that was my intent too, in that “well hopefully they’ll whittle down as the rounds go further and further” has been constantly harping on my mind. but that absolutely feeds into everything you laid out too, which, again, i DEEPLY appreciate.
i’ll be doing that, then, in that i think it’s the safest and SMARTEST course of action. it’s likewise been pointed out that the setting is a little different here than if i were doing one of my analyses, in that i’m still making it available to vote for one of those options, and that interactive element innately delegitimizes the harm/makes light of it under the guise of a poll.
i was conflating that perspective with my analyses, which IS often a more objective presentation of “okay: this is it. here is the historical context. here is how a more modern perspective impacts how it currently stands” and forgetting that polls are polls. you’re voting on them. they’re going to get spread around and viewed as a game. and they are! and i was viewing the polls from the same archivist lens as the rest of my blog, when, due to the intrinsic nature of how these polls works, you can’t really do that. it’s not the same presentation. i do view this as a historical archival of the progression of these cartoons, how Mel Blanc’s voice changes and adapts through voice direction and even the impact of history on these shorts (like, the shorts made during the WWII years are much more energetic than the domesticity of the post-war cartoons. there’s more yelling to be found in the WWII era shorts for that reason) and i was getting too lost in that and sticking to my guns of “all of this is history and deserves to be acknowledged and accounted for fairly, if/especially describing how well or poorly something has aged, otherwise it’s not history” and that doesn’t… really… work… for these polls.
i can’t believe it’s taken weeks for me to come to this realization and again, i sincerely thank you and everyone else who has called me out on this or offered other means of perspective. it was pure ignorance on my behalf, and i do want to make it known that it was never my intention to perpetuate these stereotypes and caricatures further nor harm anyone. but, obviously, prefacing it with “my intentions were good!” doesn’t negate the very real and serious harm these caricatures and i myself have caused by spreading them in such a leisurely context (or lack thereof).
as mentioned before, i take the safety and comfort of my followers and readers incredibly seriously, ESPECIALLY with the nature of these cartoons. and it’s exactly why i’m so adamant about asking people (such as yourself) to speak up and call me out, let me know what i’ve done wrong, so i can apologize, take accountability, and move forward. those disclaimers aren’t a way to avoid accountability or make it seem like i have a free pass to discuss racism. i really do mean them with every ounce of my heart, so i deeply, deeply, deeply appreciate people such as yourself acting out on those messages. thank you.
i will be excising any future deplorable examples that come up (that, thankfully, have been very few and far between, i’m up to 1948 in logging these and have “only” run into 2 that would apply) and am just going to cut any of the winners out that survived and are going into Round 2. it’s not worth it. none of it has been, but definitely, if i’m constantly thinking to myself “it’ll whittle down!” then maybe we ought to restructure our thinking now haven’t we. funny how that works.
thank you again and my deepest and most sincere apologies. i feel like a complete and utter heel for my negligence—especially because the gut instinct of “just don’t put them in there” was there all along. but, again! these exact situations are why i stress the importance of calling me out on my BS. i’m likewise deeply aware of literally just how silly this entire thing sounds, because none of this should have ever been a problem because i just shouldn’t have included them in the first place! but i did, and i take full accountability, and the harm has already been done. so i just ask and thank you for your patience, understanding and forgiveness, but completely understand that nobody—especially those harmed by my ignorance—is entitled to give it to me.
nobody ever deserves to be confronted nor harmed with such egregious stereotypes, even/especially if said stereotypes are peddled under the guise of objectivity or historical preservation. a poll is not a history site. likewise, nobody deserves to be alienated over cartoons. i post what i post because i want to share the same overflowing love and passion and joy i feel for animation history with others. i love learning new factoids. i love being educated. i love feeling like i’m learning, like i’m indulging in an intimate slice of life from a bygone era. i want to share that same love and passion and joy to my followers. i’m here to make people laugh and to make people smile. i’m here to remind people of long buried memories, or to inspire them to make new ones and investigate these cartoons themselves. i’m here to preserve the history of these cartoons within their proper contexts, and do what i can to ensure i’m doing that safely and smartly and in a way that benefits everyone. and i’m not going to accomplish any of that by slipping needlessly horrendous caricatures in something as inconsequential as a poll on which clip sounds funnier or more impressive or whatever and causing the harm.
so, sincerely, thank you.

I love how no one has real names in ahit except for. like. Vanessa.
their names all describe their characteristics or their jobs or something. "mustache girl" is a little girl with a moustache. "hat kid" is a kid who wears hats. "mafia boss" is the boss of the mafia. "the conductor" is a train conductor. "the empress", "the captain", "the nomads", "the goats", "the prince", "the badge seller", no one has names.
(dj grooves could be a name I guess. seems more like a stage name than an actual name though.)

"You're a bunch of fools! You two almost thwarted my beautiful plan! So much for the surprise, you were about to reveal the whole thing. I wonder where I found collaborators as inept as you! And now you'll stay locked in there!! You're grounded!* Tiè!*"
"I don't understand why he's so worked up about this."
"I don't wanna stay here anymore I'm so hungry!!"
(author's note: I have three notes here. 1- "where did y find x" is an insult often used in italian to imply they have little value. 2- "You're grounded" literally "in castigo", the 'you' is implied, he basically just says "grounded", and it has a clear connotation of putting your kids in time-out when they misbehave. 3- most fascinatingly, "tiè" is untranslatable, it's a regional expression along the lines of "serves you right", sometimes accompanied by a gesture that's equally as italian-specific, called "bras d'honneur". It is the closest Keroro can get to telling his friends "get fucked" without there being trouble about vulgarity, even though I am sincerely surprised they used it.)
