I'm really enjoying the perspective of the other history of the DC universe, its kinda looking back on these older comics and comparing then both to the history of the time and how we look back at them now
Given Deathstroke's current popularity I quite like this panel from number 3

Anyway, thoughts on The Other History of the DC Universe:
It is certainly a history.
I think that is interesting and well executed as far as that concept goes.
At the same time, it's often spending time recapping comics storylines and I can't help but think 'I could be reading the actual comics'
Like, it's got more storytelling going on than a Wikipedia page, but it also feels a little like Ridley is taking the sort of greatest hits overview found in a wikipedia page and turning it into a first person narrative and there is a certain level of summarizing going on.
Another point, possibly due to me just reading all of these in one swoop, is that when you compress a hero's story into 40 pages, my reaction is often, 'man, that's kind of depressing.'
Comics thrive on melodrama and getting hit with twist after struggle after twist without the breathing room and lighter moments that you do get when actually reading those arcs. He definitely tries to end on a upward note for them, but it's still A Lot.
I think the choices of real world historical events and the ways that each of the characters reflect on them was interesting.
I also liked seeing where different narratives overlapped and inter-played with each other.
We get father and daughter in Jefferson and Anissa Pierce. As the opening and closing issues in the series, they are definitely the most intertwined.
I think I liked Tatsu's issue the most.
Anyway, the art was nice, though the vibe of these was definitely illustrated monologue as opposed to comic.
They're well done for what they are and I think they're worth checking out. It's just that what they are didn't really click with me
Just, I read it and and whenever there was a moment that really struck me, I was like 'I could be actually reading this.'

ANYWAY Everyone should read The Other History of the DC Universe. I read most of those issues while not knowing much about the heroes that were in them YET I still enjoyed them completely since Ridley crafts these incredibly realistic narratives for each of them that feel authentic and rooted in real history. Reading those stories felt less like reading a made up story and more like listening to real people’s narratives about their lives. Worth the read for sure!

Bad Romance: Deathstroke, Terra, and Grooming
Slade Wilson's Deathstroke is described as a "Man's Man", yet fans overlook years of character development based on grooming tactics and manipulations of teenage girls.

Did Bruce abandon Joker believing he would die at the end of Joker’s War, or did he know Joker would escape somehow? I find the ending kinda vague and it upsets me greatly that Bruce would walk out like that. What is your take on this? I need to be believe their dance is not over!!
Hey! Short answer is no, Bruce explicitly makes sure Joker can escape:
Tumblr media
-- Batman (2016) #100
Bruce knew Joker had the tools to disarm the bomb. Him walking away was not leaving Joker to die, but rather something else. It's Bruce asserting a change in their dynamic, a refusal to play by Joker's rules. To put it bluntly... Batman and Joker are currently going through a bit of a divorce arc in the comics. I've talked about it in another meta, linked here. That answer goes into more detail, hope it helps with clearing it up!

There is something deeply flawed and just wrong with s4 of the harley quinn show and im like. Trying to make a concise point about it but its really difficult to not make this a 20 min rant
#Shitpost#im trying to tldr this but i cant#talked to my sister for like an hour about it lol#the MAIN issue is that its trying to be vbros in a universe that doesnt WORK as vbros#like. A crux of vbros is that. 1. It isnt a superhero genre focused story. It is a boy adventurer hanna barbara cartoon spinoff#Vbros is Johnny Quest before it is superhero genre#And 2. In vbros the paperwork and systems of arching are developed slowly AND inherently work. Because in vbros THE VILLAINS AND HEROES.#ARE. TO A DEGREE. PLAYING A GAME. a ridiculous pretend where sometimes people die and like. If anyone takes it too seriously they are seen#as psychopaths that need to be put down. Etc#the harley quinn show is trying to have the same universe while using the dc universe which has over 80 years of history#and established characters. And it is NOT working#like on a fundamental thematic level#S 1-2 werent that strong. S3 was the best so far. S4 is hot garbage though its such a fucking mess#Another factor is that this show doesnt treat its characters with respect which leads to like#there is almost no engaging secondary cast. It doesnt use its characters well#because it isnt taking them seriously#the only character other than harley and ivy who is taken seriously is batgirl#So a show full of characters has 2 main characters and 1 secondary one#and like. Thats SUCH a terrible design#also the forced joke writing is a mess#and the 'mystery' of this season just shit the bed so hard in the ep that just came out#legitmately making this entire season pointless and. Sort of miserable to watch tbh?#just. Wow. I am amazed at how theyre using so many moving parts and literally none of them are fitting together#even the harlivy feels so forced and nonexistant this season#like their chemistry fucking died#And harleys arc is just so fucking shit this season. Like. Wow it shit the bed hard#i was giving it a chance but this most recent ep. Wow. It was so bad.#I dont think the season can be fixed now

When will comics writers stop thinking it's okay for other characters to call Roy a junkie 💀

If I may ask, what exactly is the issue with the Emotional Spectrum? I'm kind of mixed on the execution, but given the elements of the Green Lantern mythos, it seems like a logical extension.
i don’t think the logical extension of there being an emotional spectrum is what bothers me per se (well. with the star sapphires as a notable exception) i am just not really keen on the idea of there being multiple corps in existence bc it undermines why the existence of even one was so ill-advised and prone to abuses in power. modern green lantern lore in general is very unfocused to me like sure there are some cool ideas wrt space adventures and warring factions and different rings lining up with different life experiences but in the end what i read green lantern comics for was the critical political element and commentary and i don’t see that reflected to quite the same effect in the way johns reworks the mythos

Why, instead of keeping Gotham’s henchmen employed as hench’s that are now all cat burglars, could they not just make a new business with which to employ them and provide health benefits?
Open a god dang grocery store, or a book store. Something! Why teach them to be better criminals if they’ll end up henching for more dangerous individuals later.
There’s no offramp here for aiding villains, it just keeps them in the same position, except with the ability to better cause harm in the future.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
I found out about my local protest too late to attend (I don't have a car and I live in an area with zero public transportation) so I thought I'd share this list of protests so that other people might be able to go to their's!
