Friendship Showdown: Preliminary Round #44
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda:
Meg Corbyn and Lt C.J. Montgomery (The Others Series): She's a fugitive with no legal existence but she ends up being protected by people everyone fears. He killed a human to save a little girl from the same species as the fearsome protectors. Both of them are in some sort of twilight zone where their own species (humans) hate them, for the most part, while the "monsters" (the 'others' of the title) somewhat appreciate them for their services. He knew she was being looked up by her former abusers and bold-faced lied to the only guy who could get him out of his social exile so, that he didn't know her nor where she was. He even told his troops that she was just a sosie of the girl they were looking for and that, in doubt, they should leave her alone if they think they see her in the streets. Her, on the other hand, has worked very hard to change mentalities among her protectors, and it's only thanks to HER that he could save his elderly mother, his sister and his sister in law and niblings from the apocalyptic attacks that ravaged half the country. Basically they both owe so much to the other. And they both respect the other so much. The series isn't known at all which is a shame because it's so goooooood!
Annie and Garcello (Hazy River): their creators (who are also besties) have said theyre strictly best friends who do things like cuddle, theyre also roommates and spend like all their time together and i think its nice that the creators are comitting to showing a close platonic relationship like this!!!!!!! its a very important thing to be specific about. theyve said theyre ok w fans shipping them but always emphasize that theyre canonically just best friends and a lot of fans gel well w that anyway and its so nice to see
Marlin and Dory (Finding Nemo): Finding Nemo teaches you how adults make and keep friends

Maybe some people find it stupid but I love the elemental ponies and I love that they deliver mail and I love that they line up for treats. Like literal lightening and thunder waiting patiently for a carrot chunk, and then trotting along to hand out packages? Devastatingly cute.

love me a good trope of
bad guys: "quick, hide in that forest, they won't find us!"
*gets killed by the forest who is partly composed of ancient spirits that were angered by the bad guys"

Athena, goddess of wisdom, and all-powerful, being the only person that Annabeth could call on for help; being so cruel that she would be complicit in her daughter's death just out of spite.
Percy, age 12, weak and dying, having told Annabeth they could never be friends; not only sacrifices himself to save Annabeth's life without a minute's thought, but does it without her having to ask for help.

i have such a love for characters who descend into madness or villainy out of deep, deep empathy. characters who fundamentally cannot cope with the cruel realities they find themselves in and blow up about it in spectacular fashion. fallen angel type characters with tears of outrage in their eyes. characters who break before they bend, and break so badly they splatter blood all over their noble ideals. every variation on it gets me so good

I’m actually LOVING how Rick Riordan, and the other writers of the show, took his initial concept of a Percabeth rivalry fueled by that of their parents and kind of turned it on its head?
Now, instead of Annabeth being wary of Percy because he’s a son of Poseidon, he’s wary of her because she made a callous impression on him. They get off to a rocky start even before finding out who Percy’s father is, and when they finally do, Annabeth doesn’t care. Instead of them fighting because of who their parents are, they’re fighting over their own opposed worldviews.
Then, instead of them arguing over which of the gods is cooler and who was right in the story of Medusa, they realize that, just like Medusa, Annabeth is a victim of her mother and that, unlike Medusa, she is a far kinder and stronger person, unwilling to repeat the cycle of hurt. They realize that, like his father, Percy often acts without considering potential consequences and that, unlike his father, he is a far kinder and stronger person, willing to step up for someone he wronged and whom he cares about.
Instead of Percy and Annabeth’s rivalry being focused on that of their parents, it’s focused on who they are, themselves. But the path to friendship is still the same: a realization that they have each other’s backs, no matter what, because they’re not their parents after all.

Do any of you ever wonder if Camp Half-Blood accidentally brought in a demigod of a different pantheon before?
This would be especially hilarious if it happens sometime after The Last Olympian/Heroes of Olympus, where the gods are required to claim their kids quickly.
A whole day passes, and the new demigod needs to sleep in the Hermes Cabin and Percy is furious. Meanwhile, the Greek Gods are pointing at each other and shouting, contacting the most obscure of mini gods. Chaos erupts on Olympus as every deity in Greek Mythology is called upon and interrogated. Hermes hasn't run around so much in centuries.
Hecate sits in silence, fully aware of what's happening, but enjoying the show too much to intervene.
