Happy Wednesday! No real updates here other than getting some more writing done. Finally! It's been slow going. Had to run low on that crazy momentum at some point but we are finishing this fic friends. Then I'm entering my silly era. Maybe sorta.

Also wow did the characters come for me in this scene and blow up my whole outline, now I gotta figure some shit out.

Still, his cool hand is gentle as it settles on my cheek. Like I’m precious. “Snow, you’re an utter disaster, but you are also the hero of this story. I’ve always thought so. Why do you think I hated you so much?” “I always thought you hated me because I was a disaster.” “No, that’s why I loved you, you twit. Fuck your goodness, honestly. Though you are exceedingly good, pure as driven snow. Without significant flaws you’d be truly insufferable.” I snort a laugh. “Seriously? You love that I’m a mess?” “Yes.” “Why?” “Why am I most yours when I piss you off?” I shrug. I think of that fucking fight mostly, and that while I might have hated it, he was showing me something real. I wasn’t ready to see it, but that’s what it was. No mask, no deflection. “You being the hero has always been the thing that made this—us—impossible. But you being a mess? That’s when you are most mine.”

I haven't created an intro post for everyone but for the sake of doing this tag properly (and also, I really enjoy researching the suitable names for my original characters and then talking for eons about them, hehe).

BTW, I will not include characters such as Wukong or Loki since 1) I haven't created them, they're based on/inspired by/alternative versions of already existing deities and folklore legends and 2) meaning of their names has already been explained or is still being speculated on (and you can research this in the libraries or on the Internet).

I'm including (open) tags right here in case somebody wants to avoid some spoilers which will be featured at the end of the post. Márgerdra - from the Old Norse 'marr' ( 1) 'a sea', 'a ocean', 'a lake', 2) 'a horse') and 'garðr' ('enclosure', 'protection'), it was also a name of a giantess/sorceress in the saga of Hjálmþér and Olvir

Kogar - no meaning, a made up word, I went with a sound that seemed the most cool to me

Udra - from Lithuanian 'ūdra' = 'an otter'

Lešij - a name of a Slavic forest demon/entity, = 'a leshy'

Meluzína - from the Slovak 'meluzína' = 'a howling/wailing wind'

Krabat - a name of a Sorbian folk hero, there's also a novel version of Krabat where a boy of the same name becomes a disciple of a warlock and is capable of transforming into a raven

Tiru - a made up name, no meaning, though a name of a real doggo inspired it

The Merchant - well, that's it, he's literally a merchant. Or is he?

Faust - a name of an alchemist Johann Georg Faust who's (in)famous for making a deal with the Devil thus selling his soul

Ivan - a name common in Slavic languages (I've heard some people translate it as 'John' but it's not the same name, though the ethymology is quite similar => comes from the greek Ioannes)

Zmej Milošovič - zmej/zmij (English version 'zmei') is a type of a Slavic dragon/snake (or a hybrid of those two, depends on the story), Milošovič can be used either as a surname (not at all that common), but it can also be translated as 'a son of Miloš (Milosh)'

Barbora - a Slovak, Czech and Lithuanian version of Barbara, named after a witch who was said to ride a hellish dog (literal Satan) at midnight

Kmotra - from a Slovak 'kmotra' = 'godmother', a nickname for Death Ulfrika gave her when she was a child

Krcho - from a Czech word 'krchov' = 'churchyard, graveyard'

Rarely! The thing is, I do minimum 2 rounds of editing for each chapter, but it often ends up being 4 or 5 rounds. . . ( ˊᵕˋ； ) So after all that, I usually don't wanna see my writing ever again lol

SO MANY THINGS Σ٩(๑º ﾛ º๑)۶✨

A short list of things I learnt about are: story structures, facts about Otters, bits and pieces of various mythologies, weapons, assassination attempts, more weapons, poisonous gases, sharks, limits of the human body (in terms of survival). . .

Listen. Be it topics I have researched (and then followed through the hellish rabbit hole that is wikipedia 🐌), writing, or what I actually enjoy writing/reading, it has helped SO MUCH!!

Do not look down on the joys of researching a subject for it only to be dropped or abandoned. It may spark new ideas or be a turning point for your writing, even if researching something can look tedious at first 🐟🐟🐟

So, chapter 6 is done:) I’m not sure when I’m going to post it since I need to figure out one thing or two, BUT they’re working together!! And… getting closer.

Snow is a lot of things, but he’s such a good person. Helping me after everything… Understanding me and not judging me, even after I’ve said plenty of terrible things to him.

He’s a hero, that’s for sure. Brave. That’s why I love him so much. He’s the best in this world. And he makes me want to be more like him, copy his best characteristics. Daring, more courageous… Fearless.

“ I need to know I have you, Snow,” I say, because I need to hear it. And maybe because I’m giddy.

I need to hear those words. If it was anyone else I was going to do this with, I wouldn’t need the assurance, but it’s important for me to know that even with our differences and our story, he’s got my back. I can’t do this without him. I’m not that strong.

FEH knows it's pandery and silly, TH acts like it's deep shit.

Freyja would make me rage, if I had enough figs to give about her, yes, she brainwashed those fairies letting them believe she cared for them when she didn't, but in the end, Sonia gave a peck to Nino so all's well that ends well?

Vero never abused her country, she just sent her army against Askr and we never talk about casualties because what are casualties, they're just for Helbindi to be the new Camus - even if it's hidden, Supreme Leader's country suffers from food shortages because a war effort means less effort allocated to other areas of production, but in FEH?

Who cares, Vero will die, prepare your tisses, it'll be UwU worthy on par with "I wanted to walk with U" from VW, and she'll be magically rez'd because Alfonse will remember his jelly self sort of boned (with his jelly body?) Vero's own jelly self - thus he has to find her attractive, else the "twu luf" from Lif and Thrasir won't be applied to this version of their characters, and a certain Valentine alt won't make any sense

(but then this alt came from Sharena's dream, so it's not supposed to make any sense!).

FEH tries to make the player feel sowwy for Vero, Freya, Leti (I'm sure her tragic backstory with much uwus will be revealed), sort of Reginn and really wants to make the player interested in Otter's story. I don't understand why Fjorm was meme'd about when Vero is, imo, pushed in your face way more than Fjorm. Just let Vero ruin FBs, and she'll be the OG Fjorm.

And, well, I really loathe the kind of games that tell you how you're supposed to feel. Just tell me a story, I'll take care of my own feelings and impressions, thank you.

FE16 only tried to pull this card with Supreme Leader - it's already way too much pandering - and part of her classmates, but the rest of the story isn't non-existent and IS doesn't try to push her everywhere when it comes to FE16

Young Heroes in Love isn't based on any existing characters, they are existing characters

Young Heroes in Love is a late 90s comic about young adult superheros, and it's essentially a soap opera in comic form, with just as much melodrama and messy relationships

YHIS is a really weird DC book because it was creator owned, so dc's never gonna touch these guys and frankly I don't blame them the book isnt all that, but I'm very hooked on the fact it could have been all that

Young Heroes was made by Dev Madan and Dan Raspler, and actually on Dev Madan's website you can find his concepts for a reboot series. I think Young Heroes is so neat cause it has a lot of big ideas, you can tell especially in Offramp, Monster Girl, and Hard Drive, but none feel like they had time to fully develop, except maybe Zip Kid, we love Zip

Along with an interesting story, Young Heroes has really good art, at least imo, I love oversaturated colors I love a thick outline I love angles and shapes, it's just all so good

Hard Drive doesn't look as much like Booster in the book but I see the comparison, that's more on my drawings, which I really otter redo, I do not look back on them too kindly

Tldr Young Heroes is real and Hard Drive is not Booster Gold, please read it even though it's bad there's bisexual men in it I promise it's canon I'm so serious

kai the typhlosion:

-he/him pronouns, leader of the team (don’t wanna say it was a very stupid name i was pretty young so uh gonna have to make up a new one eventually)

-looks a lot like a normal typhlosion but has a star-like mark on his right thigh (may or may not be inspired by that one promo manga) + wears the scarf bandana thingy like an actual scarf. tying bows are for nerds.

-tries to be all big and tough but is insecure af. after the whole “you caused the end of the world!” incident he’s very wary around strangers but he’s trying to get better. wants to build the biggest rescue team possible. likes to skip rocks in wiscash’s pond

-partners with shiro

shiro the totodile:

ok so dumb story i used to be a fan of voltron legendary defender and don’t know what to name the partner pokemon so i went with the first name that came to mind and it was shiro. i regret it every day.

-he/him

-icy blue colored. it was a rare mutation or something. doesn’t want to evolve bc he thinks he looks cooler that way. wears his scarf thing fairly normally but chews on it a lot so it’s falling apart.

-of course has that undying partner loyalty. often times trusted with leading longer dungeon exploration. short but doesn’t want to admit it. ankle biter. might be slightly unhinged. rides on kai’s back when tired (his legs can only take him so far).

taren the luxray:

-he/they, leader of team hunters (another stupid team name i made when i first played since again pretty young, but i like to think that was their name due to mainly focusing on taking down outlaws)

-incredibly spiky even by luxray standards. kept that weird tuft of hair shinx/luxio have but it’s also pretty spiky. wears the scarf thing around his left front leg. he’s actually right handed.

-just fucking done. really tired all the time. sorta has this stereotypical war veteran vibe. seriously the protag in explorers has seen some shit and taren is no different. pretty cold but loves his partner to death.

-partners with edward

edward the leafeon:

-any pronouns but mainly uses they/them and she/her (but for simplicity’s sake i’m using they/them here)

-overgrown poofy bangs that cover their eyes. wears the scarf around the base of their tail.

-got obsessed with recording how the landscape around treasure town changes over time after the events of the main story. loves collecting rocks. tries to bring some down to earth positivity that taren doesn’t have. they both bicker often like they’re an old married couple.

axel the fraxure:

-he/him, leader of the armory. axel is not his real name. after learning he turned into an axew he made that up. his real name was avery.

-standardish appearance. i’m pretty sure pokemon can’t be shiny in pmd (not counting celebi from explorers) but he is!! right tusk is damaged. originally the tip just snapped off when falling right out of the goddamn sky but being curb stomped to near death by kyurem made him lose half of it. scarf is wrapped around the now broken tusk.

-was one of those people who thought the world sucked. had been a drifter in the human world, having cut off ties with his family. his partner hideki was the first friend he ever had. likes to battle and tries to live up to being the hero he’s made out to be, but has had one too many existential nightmares as of late especially after first returning to his old life.

-partners with hideki as previously mentioned. they’re technically married now but since pokemon don’t seem to hold weddings they don’t openly say they are.

hideki the samurott:

-they/them

-has that deeper blue body hisuian samurott has with a light grey underbelly. lacks the mustache-like whiskers and pretty much only has standard otter whiskers. wears the scarf around their neck.

-positive thinker. works a lot on the berry fields in paradise. wholesome and hates swearing. constantly asks axel about what humans are like. likes to cuddle! oh and the shell blades are just for show they have no idea how to use them.

others that i just haven’t gotten around to:

-i wanna play the rescue team remake soon but when i played the demo back when it came out i chose cubone and charmander. already have their names (maple and cherry!) and most i got with them is cherry’s butch and they’re both lesbians your honor.

-never got super far into super mystery dungeon. wasn’t my thing. i wanna give it another shot one day but i remember liking using treecko. mine’s partner was fennekin but idk if i’ll change that or not.

Watched Nimona recently and Guardian’s of the Galaxy 3 today.

Nimona’s a well-done short story about being yourself and how society dehumanizes and lashes out at those who are “ different” , but done better then most, I liked that she is shown to be a fire-breather in a quiet scene at the back end of the movie, making her actions feel more subdued and her talk about loving destruction feel like bluff, I also liked the gay relationship and how the love interest stood in for his feelings of obligation to society/the civilians/the institution, It was refreshing to have a middle manager type as a big bad instead of the head of state for a change, also the way they were forced by the society that villanized them to act “ villainous” and eventually “ monstrous” felt very “real”, also it just looks very good and both lead characters are very charming and charismatic.

Guardian’s of the Galaxy 3 is the best of the trilogy but also the most conventional ( heroes rescues friend and takes down tyrannical ruler) , If I wanted nuance and the messiness and misery I would be reading nonfiction, I like fiction for optimistic escapist fantasies about found-families of heroes taking down evil empires by killing the big bad, or kinky sex. The first one had the whole asshole small time criminals team up to Save The Galaxy and learn to care about each other stick( so the cast was not that likable), the last one was just a-lot of daddy issues ( not bad, but a subject I have little desire for)and Chris Pratt at his… Chris Prattiest, and the group was still not fully, reformed yet.

Anyway the thing I really wanted to talk about was the stories depiction of Animal testing, since I saw someone on the r/askvegans subreddit a few days before asking what people thought of it. The plot involves Rocket ( the cyborg raccoon character) being severely injured and knocked unconscious by someone ( working for the organization that “ made” him) trying to kidnap him, Rocket has some sort of anti-tampering self destruction button in him, so they need the organization’s( who is run by a super powerful mad scientist trying to create a new species of perfect sapients to populate his perfect utopia), override code to do surgery, but since the mad scientist is after Rocket they end up not only taking the code but rescuing the other experiments and taking him down.

Even-though the story is critical of the animal testing, it feels too divorced from reality to be any sort of commentary on the real world issue, in the same way that say 101 Dalmatians is. People generally are against animal testing for cosmetics or sanitary items now, the large companies that continue to do so mainly do to comply with Chinese laws. It’s medical research that people defend today, as necessary and ( inaccurately) argue is done under the best conditions possible and never done frivolously ( If you want a good view into how Medical animal testing looks like in the real world from someone who was involved read They All Had Eyes) , the mad scientists actions are the sort of frivolous testing with no pretense of legitimacy the public is already against. The second part is the animals they used, just having the camera linger on a cage of sad white mice would have made it feel more relevant, the vast majority of mammals used in animal testing are mice and rats ( which don’t get the same minimum protections, and aren’t even counted, the way other tested mammals are) , instead the background animals included house cats, tapirs, box turtles, arctic foxes, kangaroos , a tapir, spider monkeys, vampire bats, pigs, pandas…, but no mice or rats. ( or of-course fish). The main side-animals in his backstory included a river otter, walrus, and domestic rabbit, but the domestic rabbit was an unimportant character with a “ sweet but stupid” personality, and was the most heavily cyborg modified animals to almost unrecognizably.

There is a comedic side plot where back at the base where the two put in charge when the main cast left are mad at each-other, and the Soviet talking dogs comments once on how she was left in space to die. That single line is a more substantial criticism of real world issues than the entire main plot.

Sassysnowperson’s part that was entirely Han’s monologue was SO FUN to act out. Just know there was a LOT of flailing around while trying not to drop my phone (where I was reading my annotated text from) or bang into my mic setup or speak too loud and blow out the volume on my recording lol. And yes, I did grab my collar for the bits where Han’s being choked out. :P

This was my longest podfic ever to date! It was interesting changing up how I do things a little to make it work - I usually do multiple single takes all the way through, and make a smacking sound to mark in-the-moment retakes (me smacking my own cheek), so that aurally it all sounds about the same throughout. This, of course, works better for short pieces. I had to break up the story into chunks and then do multiple single takes for each chunk, and decide that I could live with it if things sounded a little different between sections, as long as it sounded consistent *within* sections. Editing and compiling it was an EXPERIENCE.

.... I probably had too much fun deciding what AO3 tags to use. :P

FULL REVIEWS: My Fave 5 Episodes

Well, I’ve done it. I’ve seen every episode of The Owl House. One episode a day and reviewing them right after. Do I recommend it? Yes. Yes I do. With the series still fresh in my brain I’m gonna count down my five favorites because why not?

5. “Understanding Willow”

“You were never too weak to be my friend. I was too weak to be yours.”

This episode really brought the drama. Being a lifelong fan of cartoons, I’ve discovered that what gets me hooked on a show is its characters. The plot could be the greatest most revolutionary thing ever, but if I don’t like any of the characters involved don’t expect me to bother. The Owl House is the opposite. I love all (most) of the characters. I care about what they’re going through, so character drama like this really pulls on the heartstrings.

The revelation that Amity’s parents threatened Willow’s position in Hexside doesn’t completely get Amity off the hook for her behavior, but it gives more depth to all the characters involved. We can only speculate how long this resentment could have kept going if Luz hadn’t gotten involved. The sequence of young Willow and Amity burning away to reveal their current selves is haunting. So much (and so many) emotion in that short segment.

Luz encouraging Amity is cute and really starts to lead us in as the beginning of what I call “The Lumity Trilogy” of episodes.

4. “Lost In Language”

“Cool teens like me! Call me a library book because they were checking me out.”

A lot of episodes take jabs at and subvert Harry Potter tropes since Harry Potter is the big name in these kinds of stories. There’s always a Draco Malfoy-type asshole rival character. The kind of character who only lives to torment our heroes. While I thought it would be fun to hear Mae Whitman voice a bully character, Amity thankfully is more than meets the eye. This episode excellently portrayed that when you compare her to her siblings. Amity seems mean but is actually kind. The twins seem cool but are actually vindictive.

Luz had some funny ass lines that I still quote today. While they started off on the wrong foot, we didn’t know that this was the start of something beautiful.

3. “Enchanting Grom Fright”

“I got kicked out of my last school dance for dressing like an otter.”

Case in point, the beautiful. The centerpiece of The Lumity Trilogy. As the main character, Luz’s affectionate personality has had a major effect on all the other characters. While we saw hints and clues here and there, we didn’t know how far Amity had fallen until grom night. 

Luz willing to face a fear monster but not her mom is all too human. She knows she’s lying to her and it’s wrong but still. Dancing with a witch in the moonlight is better than being stuck at learn-how-to-concentrate camp. 

I still skip the B-plot when I watch this episode which is why this isn’t in the number one spot. Lumity is real and it’s going to keep on loving like it’s grom night.

2. “Adventures in the Elements”

“Magic is a gift from the island.”

Damn is this episode fun. This is probably the episode I’ve watched the most. We’ve got all my favorite character doing funny ass things and learning lessons. It also has one of my favorite B-plots thanks to Hooty acting so...Hooty. The image of him rocking out to his little headphones I think is cute and hilarious. 

Eda finally gives Luz another magic lesson but The Blights are also there to contrast Eda’s wild magic. As much as Luz wants to learn magic Harry Potter style, she has to figure it out herself in her own way. I love how wild magic is free and natural compared to the coven system’s ridged ways. 

This is where we see that Luz’s friendly personality has had an effect on Amity for the better. That’s good character development with a healthy side of funny jokes.

1. “Wing It Like Witches”

“Oh. Wow. Sports.”

This episode capped off The Lumity Trilogy and my fave five list. It’s funny. It’s cute. It’s heartfelt. It’s dramatic. It has a montage. It has everything. It’s a ripping good time. Having Amity admit (by accident) that she loves Luz was just another cherry on my fun sundae.

Heavy plots are cool and everything, but when I watch cartoons I wanna have fun. This is fun to me. Thanks for reading. Next time, fave five characters

Awww man I wanna draw so badly. You just come up with stories and AUs and want to drop some stuff for them T^T

But at least I can drop ideas! For Avatar AU. Because dang Heromari are so beautiful like that as well!

So basically Mari and Sunny are airbenders(because I don’t believe ALL air nomads were wiped out, they don’t sit in one place like that, there HAVE to be at least someone who managed to escape). Their mom is a descendant but she was a nonbender, so she didn’t even know anything. Their dad is earthbender, so they are half-breeds. At young age Mari took Sunny for a ‘journey’ which basically was her dream to find some safe place for them from Fire Nation and anyone who might hurt them. Like Air Temple, but it’s not a common knowledge where are they so they are searching. In their search they meet waterbenders Hero and Kel. They are half-breeds as well. Their dad is from North Water Tribe and waterbender. He met his future wife on Kyoushi Island and stayed there, their oldest ended up being waterbender so they send him(and Kel who later starts to waterbend as well) for trainings. Hero ended up sneaking in healing lessons due to his charms XD And when they met air sibs they couldn’t not go with them, they wanted to see the world and help their new friends. Later they meet Aubrey, runnaway firebending girl because after her Fire Nation General dad basically dumped her mom(he can’t straight up leave her, so he is just ‘busy’) she returned back home to Fire colonies and just stopped. And Aubrey had enough. And then she met her new real family. And soon they all visit some nice Earth Kingdom village with shy and nice boy and old Grandma. She and her caretaker Polly seeing how he withers like that convinced him to travel with this new people he quickly became fond of.

And now we have our gang to have all the touching and fluffy and emotional adventures.

Also big panther-bat Mewo(who carryes air sibs), small cute and pure white armadillos-otter Hector and fluffy and fighty bunny-dear Bun-Bun.

Also blooming young romance between Sunny, Kel, Aubrey and Basil. And passionate and gentle love between Hero and Mari <3

I don’t usually get much time to read for pleasure during the school year but I’m so glad I took the time to read this!

Mossflower is the second book published in the Redwall series. I read this before the first book, Redwall, because I had received a random selection of the books in the series for free and I wanted to read one before buying more. Mossflower is a prequel so reading them out of order certainly didn’t ruin my experience but I’ll be trying to read them in publication order from now on (it’s quite a time and monetary investment though because there’s 22 books in the series).

This series takes place in a world that not unlike our own might have been around medieval times except that all of the characters are animals. The main characters of many of the books (Mossflower included) are mice but there are also rats, badgers, otters, hares, snakes, frogs, and many more. The creatures of Mossflower are peaceful farmers but by the start of our story they have been enslaved by and evil clan of wildcats, ferrets, and similar animals. Many of the residents have been killed or fled deep into Mossflower Woods by the time our hero Martin the Warrior steps into the scene.

While this is technically a juvenile fiction book, it was pretty brutal at times, which I actually really enjoyed. It is the story of a war to save a civilization. This is the kind of series where you know the hero’s will win but the violence of some of the battles helps the stakes feel real and show the desperation of this once very peaceful community. I also enjoyed the changing of the narrators. I know it’s not exactly a new writing style but I love that we are shown what’s going on inside the villains castle and we get some chapters dedicated to our hero’s on their various missions. It ensures that as we follow some of our hero’s on their quest we don’t lose the tension of what’s happening in Mossflower and it also leaves you with some great cliffhangers even if you read the book in one sitting. The book also has a nice little twist at the end which I can’t wait to see play out in later novels.

I really loved this slight animal themed twist on the classic hero’s journey and I think it’s definitely a wonderful read for adults and kids who are starting their first chapter books alike.

Your post about the rules of hospitality is very interesting, I can see traits of this rules to varios medias or cultures, but do you know of some miths, stories or tails with mention of this rules and fairies or fae?

Very few stories or myths ever mention things directly. Though it seems like the Fae Folk expected humans to already be familiar with many of these concepts, which is fair as the Laws of Hospitality were actually quite real in their daily lives. The only real difference between Fairy Hospitality and Human Hospitality is that one can be broken without supernatural consequences and for one the host isn’t watching you carefully for even the tiniest slip up so he can gleefully take advantage of you. But while nothing explains the rules outright, there are several stories that deal with it. Take the Grimm Brother’s Beauty and the Beast. When the father takes the rose from the Beast’s garden its not just an ordinary theft, it is a grievous breaking of the hospitality the man has been shown with the warm bed and the feast and the seat by the fire. He is punished for it by having to choose between his own life or the freedom of one of  his daughters. That story turned out rather well in the end because the Beast had an agenda and was actually quite forgiving. Another story “The Adventures of Covan the Brown-Haired” makes a point of how the boy gets the gratitude and help of a dog, an otter, and a falcon by accepting their hospitality for a night and not doubting their generosity or being ungrateful. Several Russian Fairy Tales mention a hero who is audacious enough to complain even to Baba Yaga if they begin to question him immediately upon arrival rather than first offering food and drink as is proper. One particularly entertaining Norwegian Fairy Tale called “The Cat on the Dovrefell” mentions the Laws of Hospitality in that the townsfolk beg the protagonist’s pardon for not being able to follow them when he comes to stay at their town. Every Christmas they were chased away from their homes by a rowdy group of Trolls who wanted to feast there. The protagonist decided to stay anyway and the trolls, who mistook the bear that the man was escorting to the king for a cat and baited it with sausage, ended up causing their own trouble that way. The Bear chased them all out, and when the next year they asked the owner of the inn if the “Cat” was still there he told them it was and that it had the most ferocious kittens. The Trolls didn’t come back. So there are stories that mention the laws of hospitality, either from humans who are following or trying to get out of them, or fairies who punish or reward based on how guests behave (even if their expectations are rather vague or deliberately predatory). If you want myths, then Greek Mythology is full of examples, as is Norse Mythology, Arabic Mythology, Celtic Mythology, and even both Christianity and Judaism have many examples. All of these were known to have influenced Fairy Folklore at various points, so perhaps it isn’t that surprising that the concept of Sacred Hospitality might have crept in there when nobody was looking.
