i feel like one of the biggest things the mdzs fandom tends to forget is that lan wangji is silly
like yes he's stoic and jade faced and perfect but he also:
blushes SO often
loves bunnies and anything related to them
throws little tantrums when he's away from his husband for too long
gets flustered easily
is a MENACE when drunk
messes around with his husband
buried his son in a bunny pile
is a biter
so yes, whilst hanguang-jun is a big scary warlord, lan wangji is just a silly guy who likes bunnies and messing around with his husband :3

Wei Wuxian licks his lips and leans forward slightly, walking his fingers across the countertop aimlessly toward Lan Zhan. “You know, Lan Zhan,” he drawls, “A-Yuan says we’re both in the book.”
“Mn,” Lan Zhan responds, tracking the path of his fingers intently, “I am apparently Hanguang-jun, the moral upstanding hero.”
“And I’m the devious Yiling Loazu, who led you astray,” he smirks, peering at Lan Zhan through his lashes.
Lan Zhan meets his stare, head-on, lit from within like molten sunshine. “No,” he corrects, “not astray, Wei Ying.”
Wei Wuxian tilts his head, waiting for him to continue. His fingers stop their dancing, resting just inches away from Lan Zhan.
Lan Zhan shifts his own hand, bringing them even closer, their fingertips almost brushing.
“The Yiling Loazu did not lead Hanguang-jun astray,” he says, eyes piercing as they flicker between Wei Wuxian’s. “They were partners, and…”
“Ah,” Wei Wuxian breathes, “the decent romance?”
Lan Zhan doesn’t answer, watching him closely. The pupils of his eyes have grown so large there’s only the tiniest ring of gold around the edge. He can see himself reflected in the black. He thinks he likes the version of himself that lives in Lan Zhan’s eyes.
They’re standing on the edge of a cliff, waiting for the other to take a step forward, bracing for a fall.
It should be terrifying, this sudden drop into something completely new, something entirely unknown yet so familiar. But Wei Wuxian is filled with conviction that no matter what, Lan Zhan will catch him.
It's as electrifying as it is calming, this certainty that here, with Lan Zhan, he is safe.
Wei Wuxian tilts his head to the side in a way he knows sets the unmarked skin of his neck on display. “I’m sure it was more than just decent, with a handsome hero like Hanguang-jun.”
Lan Zhan quirks an eyebrow, his gaze resting on the curve of Wei Wuxian’s neck, just as he’d hoped. "Handsome?"
“Well,” Wei Wuxian responds, tapping his index finger so it brushes against Lan Zhan’s fingertips. His skin is soft and perfect, just like the rest of him. “He isn’t wrong. You’re very handsome, Lan Zhan.”
“Really, Wei Ying?” Lan Zhan says, voice quiet and deep.
“Yep, definitely worthy of being compared to the beautiful Second Jade of Lan.”
“Is that so?” Lan Zhan shifts closer, the smell of him filling up Wei Wuxian. He smells so familiar, like something he knows intimately. Sandalwood, Wei Wuxian realizes, with sudden clarity.
Lan Zhan continues, “I would love to hear more about your opinion on my beauty and prestige, Wei Ying.”
“You don’t know anything about me, Lan Zhan. Why would you care what I think?”
Lan Zhan tilts his head, only just. “Do I need to? To want to know how your brain works?”
I commissioned this lovely artwork by the wonderful @lotuslate of a scene from my fic, once upon a time, 很久很久以前 where the entire cultivation world is cursed to live in the modern world without their memories and abilities, but of course wangxian find a way to fall in love all over again.

author wwx thingy 👀 pls
Oh god the basic concept is Modern Times WWX passive aggressively writing a book about the fictionalized love story of the Yiling Patriarch and Hanguang-jun bc the Lan sect pissed him off denying access to their archive for his doctorate research and WELL he was just gonna suggest they were friends but now he’s gonna make them gay kiss. The book accidentally becomes popular.
This is, however, also
very much a self insert fanfic about himself and his long time crush LWJ not that he would ever admit that
a thesis on demonic cultivation vs ghost path
a thesis on talismans
working off New Adopted Parent Stress
I posted a snippet of it before here.
It’s a very nerdy academia fic with fake articles and LWJ, beneath appearing as the perfect Lan Disciple, having the most unhinged conspiracy theories, which, unlike WWX’s, aren’t even rooted in research really. Just vibes.

hiya! how about things you said that i wasn’t meant to hear + ningcheng for the ask game?
"A-jie, Zixuan-ge, I'm here again." Jiang Cheng's voice is soft, and Wen Ning wants to leave, but... but Wei Wuxian had asked him to watch out for Jiang Cheng. Even when Wei Wuxian doesn't put any power behind his words, it's still difficult to disobey. Wen Ning should tell him, but wouldn't Wei Wuxian feel bad? So he stays.
The Jin ancestral hall is nothing like the Jiang clan's. Engulfed in gold, Jiang Cheng is a point of darkness kneeling before grandeur.
"I'm not sure what that brat a-Ling has told you, so..." Jiang Cheng describes the past few months of Jin Ling's life--a notable night hunt, a well-negotiated treaty, the fight for the watchtowers. He tells them that Jin Ling has grown again, and that he's almost taller than Jiang Cheng already. That his friends are sweet, annoying, and promising. That he very obviously maneuvered so that Jiang Cheng would have to take care of Fairy while he studies in Cloud Recesses, because it would be 'so helpful, jiujiu.' He pauses. "He's such a good boy, a-jie."
He laughs, self-mocking. "Your a-Xian, though." Wen Ning should leave! "Your a-Xian has bewitched Lan Qiren's perfect, dutiful nephew, which is somehow something he thought I should be advised of. Not one personal letter in almost eighteen years, and this is what he thinks I want to know? Your didi was responsible, though, and he did not describe every imperfect act by Hanguang-jun. So, you see, I am still diplomatic."
Jiang Cheng curls down, perfect posture forgotten. His hands grip the skirts of his robes. Wen Ning can't see his face. After a few silent moments, he adds, "Jin Ling says that your a-Xian is gaining weight. So he must be eating something, even if it is bland."
The silence of the ancestral hall presses in.
"I wish..." Jiang Cheng whispers. "I wish..."
But then he shakes his head and wipes his face. "I'll visit again soon."

April fools
As usual, the classroom was silent when Lan WangJi entered the room. Except it was for a different reason than it normally would be.
Lan WangJi's robes were completely black and he didn't even have his forehead band on.
The room was graveyard silent as confused glances were exchanged between the younger ones. Lan WangJi, on the other hand, didn't seem to mind and started teaching normally.
Lan JingYi was still trying to figure out if HanGuang-Jun hadn't noticed that he was wearing the robe from Wei-Qianbei, when movement caught his eye. The door opened, revealing Wei WuXian with clothes that were too big for his body and HanGuang-Jun's forehead band.
The worst wasn't even that! Wei WuXian was not wearing his usual smile and he looked cold and hard.
Lan JingYi couldn't help himself, "What's going on?"
Wei WuXian, "JingYi, don't speak loudly during classes."
Lan JingYi, "?!?!?"
Lan Sizhui, equally confused but knowing that they would soon speak at the end, just tried to keep up with the class.
It was difficult as Wei WuXian was stiff and posture perfect, not making any comments or laughing.
Meanwhile, Lan WangJi smiled, making him look more like ZeWu-Jun than he already was and still making occasional jokes.
Lan Sizhui was diligently copying when a paper landed on his desk without either of the two teachers noticing. He discreetly opened the paper, Lan JingYi's handwriting was a complete mess, as if it had been done in a hurry.
"Sizhui, I think Wei-Qianbei and HanGuang-Jun are possessed!!!!!! Let's warn Lan Xiansheng and ZeWu-Jun and plan an exorcism without them knowing!!!"
A voice above him called out harshly, "Sizhui."
Lan Sizhui was startled when he noticed Wei WuXian standing beside him, with a null expression.
Wei WuXian, "It is forbidden to exchange notes during class."
Everyone tensed, especially Sizhui, who was being targeted at that moment.
Lan JingYi then stood up, "It was me! I gave the note, Sizhui is innocent."
Wei WuXian, "Well then, the two of you will be punished to write Conduct three times."
Lan JingYi, "Huh? Wei-Qianbei, that's not fair."
Lan WangJi, "Hmpf! Why is that? It's just a note."
Lan Sizhui was horrified seeing Lan WangJi like that just like the other students, but no more than Lan JingYi.
Lan JingYi, "You guys can only be possessed!"
Wei WuXian scolded him, "Lan JingYi."
Lan WangJi, "The class is almost over, you can go and we'll sort it out later."
The students looked at each other with nervousness and fear.
Lan WangJi laughed softly, "Go, you can go."
Without a second longer, all the little Lans rushed out of the room, including Lan JingYi and Sizhui.
After the door closed, Wei WuXian started to laugh frantically and Lan WangJi's smile disappeared.
Wei WuXian, "Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan hahahahahahaha did you see their faces?!"
Lan WangJi, "Mn."
Wei WuXian, "I thought JingYi was going to have a deviation! Not even Sizhui-Er escaped."
Lan WangJi, "They will still be punished for the note."
Wei WuXian, "They think we've been possessed hahahahahaha! We should go after them before they try an exorcism."
Lan WangJi wiped away Wei WuXian's tears, "They must have gone after Uncle."
Wei WuXian, "Great! Let's get him too, Er-Gege."
Lan WangJi smiled again, "Mn."
Lan JingYi ran with Lan Sizhui at his side, the two of them should have been heading to their punishment, instead they rushed straight to Lan Qiren's residence.
As soon as they caught sight of the old teacher, Lan JingYi ran faster.
Lan Qiren heard the footsteps and his face immediately crumpled, "It is forbidden to run in Cloud Recesses."
Lan JingYi quickly caught his breath before bowing down, "Lan Xiansheng! HanGuang-Jun and Wei-Qianbei have been possessed!"
Lan Qiren, "That— how is that possible? WangJi wouldn't let that happen," he stroked his beard, "Unless that's Wei WuXian's idea, always pulling WangJi into his nonsense, knowing he won't refuse."
Lan JingYi, "You'd better let ZeWu-Jun know!"
Lan Qiren, "Xichen is busy, I'll go myself- Wei WuXian?! What does that mean?"
The two turned around, seeing Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi walking together, with Lan WangJi clinging to Wei WuXian's arm.
Wei WuXian bowed with an impassive face, "Lan Xiansheng."
Lan WangJi did the same, with a small smile, "Shufu."
Lan Qiren looked at the two of them and her face turned red, "What does that mean?!"
Wei WuXian, "It is forbidden to make loud noises in Cloud Recesses."
Lan Qiren, "WangJi, what are you doing?"
Lan WangJi, "I'm with my husband."
Wei WuXian, "We came because Lan JingYi and Lan Sizhui didn't show up for the punishment assigned to them in class today."
Lan Qiren could understand why, "Stop it you two, stop playing around."
Wei WuXian's face hardened, "With all due respect, Lan Xiansheng, but students' bad behavior should not be covered up."
Lan Qiren, "How is it?!"
Lan WangJi, "The two passed notes in class."
Lan JingYi felt a bit of resentment towards the smiling HanGuang-Jun.
Lan Sizhui took the lead seeing how Lan Qiren trembled and reddened by the second, "We apologize Qianbei, we are going to the library immediately."
Lan JingYi, "What?!"
Lan Sizhui let out a sharp "JingYi" after that. He grabbed his friend's sleeve and pulled.
Wei WuXian, "Looks like we're going to have to increase the punishment."
Lan WangJi, "How cruel."
Lan Qiren, "You two are going to kill me! I'm going to die and it will be your fault!! Out of here, both of you!!!"
Wei WuXian, "Shufu, please rest, at your age, you can't get too emotional."
Lan Qiren, ""WEI WUXIAN!!!"
/
Lan Xichen heard his uncle's shout, the name he shouted made him sigh and smile. Rather than going to the Hanshi, he decided to see what made Wei WuXian for his uncle to scream so loudly.
Before turning the corner into one of the residences, two figures in black and white walked past him.
Lan Xichen, "...?"
Smiling Lan WangJi in black robes and impassive Wei WuXian in white robes.
Lan WangJi was the first to notice him.
Lan WangJi, "Brother, how are you?"
Lan Xichen felt like looking into a mirror, "WangJi, you look... different."
Lan WangJi, "Do I look like it?"
Lan Xichen looked at Wei WuXian, "You too, Wei-gongzi."
Wei WuXian greets him without even moving his face, "ZeWu-Jun."
Lan Xichen understood his uncle, it was a bit scary, yet funny, "I see...", he says goodbye shortly after, "I was just going to see Shufu, I'll let you go your way now."
Lan WangJi, "See you later, brother."
Lan Xichen let out a stifled laugh, "See you later, WangJi."
When he reached his uncle's house, he knocked softly on the door, Lan Qiren opened it with a frown that worsened upon seeing him.
Lan Qiren, "What are you doing here? I told you to leave me alone!"
Lan Xichen, "...?"
Lan Qiren, "I will still have a deviation because of you and your disgrace of husband, WangJi!"
Lan Xichen, "It's Xichen, Shufu."
Lan Qiren, "..."
At Jingshi, Wei WuXian fell to the ground in laughter.
Lan WangJi, "Careful."
Wei WuXian was in a ball and clutching his stomach, "Lan Zhan.... hahahahahahaha.... your brother... and uncle... hahahahaha..."
Lan WangJi let out a soft laugh, "We have to go to the library."
Wei WuXian, "I think that's enough, let's stop torturing the little one.", calming down a bit more, he sat back and smiled mischievously, "Let's do this with Jin Ling next time!"
Lan WangJi couldn't deny him anything, "Mn."

Training
The Lan juniors are practicing archery when Wei Ying stumbles upon the Cloud Recesses' training grounds in his aimless walk around the place. He observes for a bit, at first.
Sizhui's stance is nearly perfect, he recognizes and corrects his own mistakes easily and does not seem bothered about missing shots. Lan Zhan's hand is so obvious that Wei Ying finds it endearing.
Lan Jingyi, however, is growing increasingly frustrated. His shots are powerful and quick but he doesn't score as many points as he would like, muttering to himself about whatever he could be doing wrong. He seems more focused on the target rather than his stance and it shows the more he misses.
"Straighten your shoulders, Jingyi." Wei Ying intervenes, "And lower your elbow a little, you'll shoot too low."
He picks up a bow and arrow - how nostalgic, he thinks - and demonstrates the correct stance, smiling to himself as he releases the bow string and hits bullseye.
"Wow..."
"Why do you look so surprised? Don't you know I won the archery competition at the last discussion conference in Qishan? I even beat Hanguang-Jun and Zewu-Jun!"
"Hanguang-Jun told us once, he said you were the best archer of your generation." Sizhui says, and Wei Ying can't help a laugh.
"Lan Zhan thinks I'm the best in everything, and I think he is. We have this back and forth constantly and we've made zero progress on it."
"Uncle Wen Ning said he used to do archery as well."
"Yup! Honestly I think he was among the best, he just never got the chance to shine..."
It's bittersweet to remember - Wen Ning, young and alive, so incredibly skilled but just as anxious. If Wen Chao had minded his business, everyone would have been able to see the true potential that lay within the shy boy. It all went to hell far too soon for Wen Ning to garner the respect and admiration he deserved.
"Anyway," Wei Ying continues, "what are you guys training for?"
"Our own archery competition!" Sizhui responds, eagerly. "The invitation to the discussion conference mentioned they'll hold one this year and Zewu-Jun picked us as representatives for the Lan sect!"
Nie Huaisang always seemed to like watching archery, Wei Ying thought to himself. I wonder why.
"So what's the prize?"
"A war fan."
"A war fan?"
"Yeah!" Jingyi gesticulates at about half his height and opens his arms wide. "It's about this big, and you can fly on it and stuff."
"I didn't even know such things existed..." Wei Ying replied. "Much less that the Nie would have them. But then again... a very surprising sect if I've seen one!"
Lan Jingyi picked up his bow again. "I wanna win it so I can fan Jin Ling away when he's being annoying."
Wei Ying chuckles at the image. "He won't be participating, right? Since he's a sect leader now."
"No, but he would have stood no chance anyway." And Lan Jingyi pointedly misses the target when he tries shooting an arrow all arrogantly. Wei Ying barely holds in his laugh and Sizhui sighs fondly before hitting his own target right in the middle.
"Say, Sizhui," Jingyi begins, pleadingly, "if you win, will you give me the fan?"
"Remember what Hanguang-Jun told us, do not receive praise for deeds you haven't done yourself-"
"-and do not accept criticism you do not deserve." Jingyi completed. "But I don't want the praise, I just want the fan!"

Drunk!Lan Zhan and Honesty
Within the narrative, we find LWJ in a drunken state in three separate instances. The über lightweight Lan offers, at first glance, a perfect opportunity for WWX to probe at his deepest secrets and reveal the truth beneath his perfect cultivator countenance. Or, at least, this is what WWX insists is going on.
The drunken version of Lan Wangji was astonishingly honest and forthcoming. Moreover, compared to his usual self, his words and actions were so bold and unrepressed! It was rare to encounter such an open and unreserved Lan Wangji. How could Wei Wuxian possibly treat him with due respect and resist making mischief? (Chapter 31)
WWX sees LWJ being drunk as an opportunity to find answers to his questions--better yet, once he learns that LWJ does not remember anything that happened while he was inebriated, his inebriation becomes an opportunity to ask risky questions with impunity. This is  what leads him to trick LWJ into drinking alcohol at the inn in Yunping, since he is too afraid of ruining his friendship and relationship by asking whether his own feelings are reciprocated--if he asks LWJ while he is drunk, and he receives the answer he dreads, the next morning LWJ will be none the wiser and still treat him as a friend.
Interestingly, though, within the three episodes of LWJ being under the influence and made vulnerable to honesty, this very situation actually works to unlock WWX’s unconscious or repressed desires, and leads him to act upon them more openly than when he is facing a sober LWJ. In this clearly intentional subversion, WWX ends up revealing as much, if not more, while he interacts with an inebriated LWJ during these three episodes.
The first time
WWX’s desire to have LWJ drink with him is in parts motivated by the desire to see his drunken mannerisms, but also the simple wish to see him blush. When he realises his face does not change, he expresses disappointment: “Lan Zhan, why isn’t your face even the least bit red when you’re drunk?” (CH31)
After he washes LWJ’S face, a particular sign of endearment we will see re-appear (especially once they are together) makes its first appearance: “Looking at Lan Wangji’s clear gaze, Wei Wuxian could not resist and he stroked Lan Wangji’s chin lightly.” (CH31)
When he asks a series of questions to LWJ to verify whether he is truly answering them honestly, one stands out amongst the rest, even if WWX pretends he asks it without any forethought. That is, “have you ever liked anyone?” (CH31). After reading the whole book, it becomes clear that WWX had desired from the beginning to be liked by LWJ, and no matter how cheeky he was being, we can read into the question WWX’s unconscious wish that LWJ had liked him in the past.
His reaction to LWJ’s honest declaration of want (when he believes to be asking whether LWJ wants Bichen but LWJ hears him asking whether he wants him) is also revealing, at a point in the story where WWX still denies to himself any attachment or attraction to LWJ.
Wei Wuxian was aware that Lan Wangji was already hopelessly drunk, and that these words were not directed at him. However, he was still struck so hard by these two words that his legs and arms felt weak. This Lan Zhan... If he were this honest and passionate towards a lady, what a formidable man he would be! (Chapter 31)
This first drunken episode however ends abruptly, as LWJ claims it is haishi and thus time to rest. None of the questions WWX meant to ask have been answered, though many he wasn’t aware he wanted to ask indeed were.
… Fine. There would always be another opportunity to get Lan Wangji drunk again. Sooner or later, he would get his answer. (Chapter 31)
The second time
Similar to the first instance, LWJ drinks of his own volition after WWX expresses the desire to share a drink with him: “Hanguang-jun, aren’t you being a bit too considerate? Are you really going to drink with me?” Wei Wuxian said with some astonishment.“ (CH43)
As soon as LWJ falls asleep, WWX’s strong attraction immediately surfaces, and he feels compelled not just to tease but to become closer to his sleeping form. So taken is he by looking at him that he fails to hear Wen Ning knocking.
A strange, eager excitement surged within him and, in one gulp, he finished off the remaining liquor in the pot before standing up. Resting his hands behind his back, he paced back and forth across the room. Suddenly, he walked to Lan Wangji’s side and leaned over, lowering his head and whispering into his ear.
“Lan Zhan?”
There was no reply.
“Wangji-xiong?” continued Wei Wuxian.
Lan Wangji’s head was supported by his right hand, his breathing slow and steady.
Both his features and the hand at his forehead were pale and flawless like fine jade.
The faint flagrance of sandalwood wafted off of him. The scent had originally been cold and somewhat sombre. Now, as it combined with the liquor’s mellow aroma, a few tinges of warmth rippled through the frost. As though a saccharine whisp had wound its way through, the scent was almost intoxicating.
The aroma swirled around Wei Wuxian’s lungs as he stood near Lan Wangji. Involuntarily, he sank lower, bringing himself closer. A hazy thought clouded his mind. Strange… why does it seem a bit hot?
Though Wei Wuxian remained entirely unaware, amid the inebriating fusion of liquor and sandalwood, his face inched nearer and nearer. His voice also sank lower until he was whispering in a teasing tone.
“Lan… er—”
“Gongzi…” a soft voice suddenly said.
Wei Wuxian’s face had already gotten so close to Lan Wangji that he could easily reach out and touch him, and the ‘gege’ on his tongue had been on the verge of passing between his lips. But the sound startled him awake and his feet slipped beneath him, nearly sending him crashing to the ground. (Chapter 43)
This moment of honesty does not break through to WWX’s consciousness, who wonders at finding himself so near to LWJ, and having his heart beat so fast: “ Only now did Wei Wuxian realise that his heart was beating rather quickly. He puzzled over it again, then regained his composure.” (CH43).
Yet, although he refuses to acknowledge the obvious reason for his state, no sooner does he give in again:
He returned to Lan Wangji’s side and leaned against his ear.
“Lan Zhan, oh Lan Zhan, please stay asleep longer. I’ll be back before you know it. Be a good boy, okay?”
Once the last word left his lips, he felt his hand itch and could not help but brush the tip of his finger against Lan Wangji’s eyelashes. (Chapter 43)
After LWJ wakes up, WWX once more positions himself as the one to extract answers out of an honest LWJ: “His eyes were so clear, so honest that a desire for mischief surged through Wei Wuxian. As though something inside of his body had been ignited, he smiled teasingly. “Lan Zhan, are you still going to answer any question I ask? Do whatever I tell you to?“ (CH44)
Of course, LWJ likewise reveals many things under his inebriated state; for instance by tying up WWX with his forehead ribbon, both denoting that WWX is his chosen person but also suggesting much about his desires. Even his “domineering attitude”, as WWX calls it, later is expressed in their sexual rapports. However, at this point of the narrative, WWX is unable to parse these clues partly due to missing information, such as not yet knowing the true meaning of the Lan clan’s forehead ribbon.
The fact that LWJ will forget the events of the evening seems to be the biggest push that encourages WWX to be more brazen in his actions, which only serves to bring to light his unconscious desires, leading to what he believes to be their first kiss. In this exchange, WWX hides his own want behind the performance that he’s doing it only because LWJ seems to like it.
Am I just going to let Lan Zhan have all the fun by himself? Wei Wuxian thought. No way. That’s unacceptable. Anyway, no matter what I do to him, he’s not going to remember anything when he wakes up tomorrow. I’m going to have even more fun with him.
With his arms around Lan Wangji, Wei Wuxian returned to the bed with him.
“You like this, don’t you?” he asked. “Don’t turn around. Speak. Do you like it or not? If you like it, then we don’t have to run around first every single time. I’ll make you as happy as you want.”
As he spoke, he tugged Lan Wangji’s hand upward, lowered his head and kissed once between his pale, slim fingers.
Lan Wangji tried to pull his arm away like last time but Wei Wuxian held it firmly in place, refusing to let go.
His lips touched Lan Wangji’s fingertips. With feather-light breaths, Wei Wuxian roamed up each knuckle until he reached the back of his palms. There, he kissed him again.
No matter how hard Lan Wangji tugged, he was unable to tear his hand away. He could only clench his fingers together into a tight fist.
Wei Wuxian pushed up his sleeve a little, revealing a snow-white wrist. He kissed it as well.
Afterwards, he gazed at Lan Wangji without lifting his head.
“Is this enough yet?”
Lan Wangji pressed his mouth tightly shut, refusing to speak.
Wei Wuxian finally sat up straight again and continued, his voice unhurried, “Tell me, did you burn any paper money for me?”
There was no answer. Wei Wuxian chuckled and pressed toward Lan Wangji. He kissed his chest through his robes.
“If you don’t talk, I’m not gonna give you any more. Tell me. How did you know it was me?”
Lan Wangji closed his eyes. His lips trembled, as though he were about to open his mouth and confess.
However, as Wei Wuxian gazed upon those soft, pale-pink lips, something momentarily possessed him. He suddenly went and placed a kiss upon them.
When he was finished, he even licked them, as though the kiss had not been enough.
Abruptly, both men’s eyes widened.
After a long, long time, Lan Wangji sharply lifted his hand. Startled out of his daze, Wei Wuxian immediately broke into a cold sweat. (Chapter 44)
After the fact, once he’s “startled out of his daze,” WWX blames his action on his own drinking, even though the narrative has shown him drinking much more alcohol without any impact on his behaviour, thus encouraging the reader to see through WWX’s obvious deflection. In this exchange, when faced with an inebriated LWJ, WWX has revealed just as much, if not more, without intending to.
No more alcohol for me. I’ve really had enough.
Then, he turned back. His gaze just able to brush past the divider. He stared at Lan Wangji’s profile as the man lay silently on the bed.
I really did drink too much today. Lan Zhan is such a noble and proper person. Even if he were drunk, even if he probably won’t remember when he wakes up, I should not have teased him in such an outrageous way… It was far too disrespectful.
Rembering the outrageous way Wei Wuxian had teased Lan Wangji, he could not help but bring his hand up to his face and touch his own lips.
The third time
Unlike the two previous times, an insecure WWX makes the dubious choice of tricking LWJ into drinking to try to settle his own heart. This takes place after the confrontation in Lotus Pier, where WWX convinced himself that LWJ was insulted by JC’s ‘accusations’ regarding their relationship. Unsettled, he is too scared to ask LWJ directly, but he realises he has little control over his feelings when it dawns on him that he truly can no longer sleep without LWJ next to him. Then, he reasons, there would be little risk in asking a drunk LWJ, who would not remember being asked in the first place. He also convinces himself that this is all he wants, that he has no other desires; simply to confirm, only to know.
Just as he was about to pour the wine, he paused for a split second, warning himself immediately, If he doesn’t drink it, then let it go. If he drinks it, I’ll only ask a few things. I definitely won’t do anything else. I only have to know what he thinks. He won’t remember anything after he wakes up anyways… It won’t interfere with anything.
Only after such a promise did his hands steadily pour the cup full. As if nothing happened, he pushed it in front of Lan Wangji. He’d already been prepared for if Lan Wangji didn’t drink it, but perhaps because Lan Wangji’s mind was busy as well, he didn’t even look at it as he raised it and drank everything.
[...] This time, he fell asleep right on the sitting mat. He still sat properly. Apart from his closed eyes and chin pointing downward, his sitting pose was no different from the norm. Wei Wuxian waved his hand a few times in front of his face. When there was no reaction, he was finally relieved. He reached out, gently lifted Lan Wangji’s chin, and whispered, “I’ve been holding it back all these days. Hanguang-jun, you’re finally in my hands now.” (Chapter 92)
This is reiterated later when, as he bathes LWJ--his head is full of questions, but most of all, full of “the question that he’d always held in the back of his mind, the question he wanted to ask the most— Hanguang-jun, just what do you think of me?“ (CH94)
Ironically, WWX gets immediately distracted from his goal by his attraction to LWJ, drawing for a kiss before he regains self-control at the last minute. This amount of distraction, to the point his body is moving on his own, seems to happen at this point in the narrative mostly when WWX is facing a drunken LWJ. The same situation happens soon after, when once again WWX becomes distracted by the desire to kiss him:
Lan Wangji turned to the other side. Wei Wuxian grabbed his shoulder and turned him back around, coaxing, “Look at me. Don’t run away. Come, come, look at me.”
And so Lan Wangji looked at him. Both of the two stared at each other’s face. They were too close, so close that he could even count Lan Wangji’s long eyelashes. Cold sandalwood and amorous wine—two aromas intertwined amid the unnoticeable breaths.
After a long while of staring, Wei Wuxian’s heart beat faster and faster. He finally couldn’t take it any longer and retreated in defeat, the first to avert his gaze. (Chapter 93)
Interestingly, WWX is seemingly becoming aware of the influence of a drunken LWJ on his own state of mind, and MXTX is bringing our attention to this fact we’ve witnessed in the past two instances of LWJ being drunk: “Now that [LWJ] was drunk, Wei Wuxian’s past dilemma had completely disappeared. It was as if all the wildness in him that had nowhere to go finally found an exit out of his body.” (CH93)
We can seriously doubt that WWX’s brazen action later during the night, when he grabs LWJ in the tub, would have taken place if he had realised that LWJ had sobered up by that point. Not only because of the way a drunk LWJ at this point in their relationship helps WWX connect with his unconscious or repressed desires; not only because it seems to clear his mind and allow for an exit for all “all the wildness in him;” but also because the thought that LWJ will forget everything--all this makes him bolder.
Looking at him sitting in the bathtub serenely, Wei Wuxian suddenly felt he looked pitiable, so he hooked his finger and caressed his chin slightly in an attempt to appease him. Suddenly, he felt that that wasn’t enough; his hand and heart itched and he felt a desire to caress Lan Wangji’s chest. Yet as his hand wandered down, he was stopped by Lan Wangji, grabbing his wrist.
That night, Wei Wuxian had already directed countless of such small gestures at Lan Wangji and had gotten used to Lan Wangji going along with them. To suddenly be halted and grabbed, Wei Wuxian was stunned momentarily, not knowing how to react.
[...] With this face, with this kind of expression, under such circumstances, with this person… Wei Wuxian felt as though his entire body had been doused in a fire that burned away all his rationality and lit him ablaze.
In a manic spur of impulse, he reached his other hand into the water and roughly grabbed at a certain part of Lan Wangji, breathing, “Hanguang-Jun, don’t you dare tell me that you don’t like me touching you like this!”
We likewise get the admission of something that had been true since their teenage years: “Lan Zhan, did you know that I really like it when you get angry…” (CH94)
After their entanglement, WWX reflects upon the fact that his real desires had been revealed in all of this. All the assurances that he had given himself before making Lan Wangji drunk, of “only asking questions and not doing anything else”, was an incomplete picture, a lie (CH95). Ultimately, the truth in WWX’s heart was that he wanted all of LWJ, not just an answer to his question.
Conclusion
Rather than simply using the three instances in which LWJ becomes drunk as a means to bring down his barriers and force him into honesty, as WWX himself believes, MXTX demonstrates how seeing LWJ in this state likewise brings down WWX’s barriers, and allows him to express desires that he might not even be aware of or might not want to acknowledge. In other words, without realising, WWX allows himself a vulnerability around this version of LWJ that he never shows otherwise (that is, until they confirm their feelings to be reciprocated). It’s a pity then, that the very thing that helps him be so unconsciously honest means that LWJ will have no recollections of what transpired and remain uncertain of WWX’s feelings until his confession at Guanyin Temple. In that sense, both are vulnerable and honest, but there is no true reciprocity in those moments.

A WIP game, I can do that, @fistfuloflightning <3 Let me annoy you with my Jiang Cheng/Lan Wangji post-canon wip. cql verse, because it gives me the great opportunity to have older Jiang Zongzhu deal with Xiandu Lan Wangji. To give Jin Ling an opportunity to attend the studies in the Cloud Recesses, Jiang Cheng takes on some clan leading duties for Lanling-Jin, supervised by the Chief Cultivator, most annoying esteemed Hanguang-Jun. Have an excerpt of Jiang Cheng trying to rail rile Lan Wangji up from the second chapter:
“This position requires a particular way of thinking.” “This position requires you,” Jiang Cheng said, looked steadily at Lan Wangji, not letting that glance slip away, leaning closer to feel those eyes on him, the tingle down his spine. Lan Wangji’s ears seemed red from this close. “Someone perfect, proper and particular. Someone setting an example.” In annoying others. “No one’s afraid you’ll ever go mad with power like some of your predecessors.” “Hmph.” “I keep a close eye on you, just in case,” Jiang Cheng said, voice quiet, distance between them too small to dare for more volume. Almost a whisper. Lan Wangji blinked and cocked his head to the side, watching him as if Jiang Cheng was about to slam his balled fist into his face. His ears red, his throat exposed like this, a vein pulsing invitingly. Perhaps he kept too close of an eye. “Don’t think I’m praising you. Gusu-Lan needs to hold some more competitions and conferences for you to keep up with your predecessors. I assume with Zewu-Jun in seclusion it’s too time consuming to organise anything and continue splitting his duties between you and your uncle.” Jiang Cheng grabbed the folded paper and pulled it out of Lan Wangji’s unexpectantly loose grip, stashed it within his sleeve. Nothing to waste time on here anymore now. He should bow and leave. “Competitions?” And Lan Wangji didn’t let him, pinned him straight to the spot with his stare. “Like?” Jiang Cheng leant back in towards those eyes. Fear was something for juniors after all. “Why ask for my opinion, Hanguang-Jun? Yunmeng-Jiang is not known for its hospitality, if I need to remind you.” Lan Wangji didn’t flinch away from his breath, didn’t blink for once. “I would not decline your opinion.” No one should suffer from goosebumps at such indifferent, cold words, and here Jiang Cheng was, being a fool. “We’d be here all night if the two of us discuss socialising.” A flutter of lashes. There it was, as hateable as always. “If only there were more hours in one day,” Jiang Cheng said. “If only.” Jiang Cheng smirked right at Lan Wangji, instead of bowing and leaving. “Clan Leader Jiang.” Lan Wangji turned further towards him, seemed almost hesitant for a moment. “Cultivation should not be neglected. Has your training suffered since you’ve taken on Clan Leader Jin’s duties?” Jiang Cheng closed his tired eyes for a moment, probably too long, and Lan Wangji looked at him with that softly furrowed brow again. Fucking strange question out of the blue. “Would you like a duel to test me?” “Meditate with me,” Lan Wangji said. “I was preparing to. Join me.” Jiang Cheng’s heart almost drowned that quiet, deep voice. He breathed out something akin to a laugh. Watched his breath leaving goosebumps on Lan Wangji’s pale throat. “I didn’t know Gusu-Lan practiced Dual –” He bit his tongue, Lan Wangji’s eyes growing wide, ears flaring crimson. Jiang Cheng almost jumped back, forced his body into a simple step, craving more and more distance, wishing those eyes to close. Rarely had he seen Lan Wangji’s eyes this large and open, never a better opportunity to judge their colour, and he really had no need to do that. “My cultivation is not yours to worry about. Xiandu.” He bowed deeper than necessary and couldn’t escape that wide-eyed look. Carved into his mind even with his eyes open. He forced his spine straight again and stared through Lan Wangji, who lowered his head into a bow in return. And Jiang Cheng turned before Lan Wangji could look at him again. Judge him. Blush at him. Fuck this. He dashed outside, hurried through the garden as fast as Gusu-Lan allowed and dodged those beds of blue flowers in his way. Felt like some stupid rabbit hopping through them. The cool evening breeze burning in his lungs, heart slamming into them, not allowing him to breath. Like some dumb fucking teenager. Embarrassing himself to his core that wasn’t even his and beyond. Jiang Cheng kicked the first pebble in his way down this mountain.
Who knows if this makes sense, it's a beloved moment to me. I love middle-aged cultivators being dorks. I have no writer friends in fandom, feel yourself tagged if you want to share beloved wips. *hides*

hiii apple 🩵 how do you think married or established relationship zhuiling handles mornings? I think Sizhui is fine with them because he grew up with the Lan sleep schedule but sect leader Jin is probably impossible 🤣
What a perfect time to answer this as I’m laying in bed dreading waking up and wanting to go back to sleep lmaooo
Oh, Jin Ling is absolutely impossible which makes it a good thing that it’s Lan Sizhui waking him up because he’s the only one who can (aside of Jiang Cheng who would probably just barge into his room and push him off the bed, lbr 😭)
LSZ is gentle and patient with him, though. The Lan schedule doesn’t apply to Jin Ling but it’s also not good for him to sleep in so much that it makes him groggy and tired the rest of the day, so LSZ tries his best.
But JL is in full mistress mode when he’s tired. If Lan Jingyi thinks it’s bad in public, he’s never had to live with him. He likes to make waking up a monumental task for LSZ because he’s used to getting his way and LSZ wouldn’t possibly deny him, right?
After enough pestering from LSZ, he raises his hands like a zombie so LSZ can pull him up, then crashes against him, snakes his arms around his waist and drags him back onto the bed with him.
Literally impossible.
So LSZ works around it by carrying Jin Ling around who’s clinging to him like a koala, still trying to sleep, while he makes them tea, sets out their clothes, brushes Jin Ling’s hair, etc (Lan arm strength and Wen multitasking, you know how it is).
It makes him laugh because it reminds him of how senior Wei acts with Hanguang-Jun but he keeps that to himself since Jin Ling would probably go feral after getting compared to Wei Wuxian. 💀

💖💙The River Brought You Here
By:ChilianXianzi
Summary:
When she found the boy by the side of the river, Zhou Jia knew that anyone who'd come for him is not to be trusted. Not with the dark purple fingerprints around his throat, the veritable map of lashes old and new upon his back. It's almost a blessing, she thinks, that the boy remembers none of the life that had treated him so cruelly. That he's free to just be A-Ying, in this small harbour town that he embraces so readily as his home.
The day someone does come for him, she had not expected it to be the war hero Hanguang-Jun - Saying A-Ying name with such fervent hope before it turns into anguish as A-Ying fails to recognize him.
Chapter:1/1
Words:11,941
Status:completed
"Lan Zhan," A-Ying has finally had it, hands gripping the white silk of Lan Wangji's sleeves for attention, "Do I get no say in this?" "Wei Ying does not want to marry?" Lan Wangji asks mournfully, his placid eyes suddenly twin pools of pitiful liquid gold. The boy had clearly been spending too much time with Song Bingfen. "Yes, I mean, no! I mean, of course I want to marry you, who wouldn't want to marry you, Lan Zhan, ah! But you clearly weren't listening when I said-" "Then I am marrying Wei Ying," Lan Wangji says, smugness radiating off the perfect lines of his face, prompting A-Ying to another round

MDZS thoughts; wangxian
Out of all the MXTX couples, I think Wangxian is definitely the most polarising,  especially when you consider how like-minded Hualian are, and how mutually ridiculous Bingqiu are. It’s interesting to think about, because even through character design, Bingqiu’s christmas tree themed robes and Hualian’s red and white complimentary robes, Wangxian falls outside of that, their black and white robes always being a direct contrast to each other in the most basic form. But after deeper consideration, Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian are shown to be incredibly similar in the ways that draw them together (with of course, some fundamental differences). This post will contain spoilers, but why would you be on Tumblr if you didn't want to get spoiled?
I think a good place to start this would be with ‘righteousness’, because it pretty much explains the other points I had planned to make anyway (e.g. loyalty, isolation, duty). It’s a running bit throughout MDZS that Wei Wuxian is just a depraved evil demonic cultivator, but that’s the beauty of the statement, because it contrasts his actual, very noble personality. The way in which he presents his righteousness is where the majority of the problem arises though, because Wei Wuxian is a true and staunch defender of people he deems less fortunate, and those people also happen to be the ones which everyone else is venting their hatred at. His defence of the Wen’s was truly admirable, but even through his friendship with MianMian, or his obsession with being friends with Lan Wangji, his dedication to doing what he believes is right is unmoving. And this drives people away from him, casting him aside as a traitor and eventually leading to his own demise, but he stays true to what he believes is right, which is protecting those who need it.
Lan Wangji is much of the same type of person. Lan Wangji has always been (and I quote) ‘righteous, perfect, and void of worldly desires’, the very pillar of how everyone else should act. He not only holds everyone around him to impossibly high standards, but lives by them himself, which drives a wedge between him and everyone around him. People are uncomfortable with the staunch and unyielding standards of righteousness that he holds people to, which leads to them pushing him up as this impossible standard that they should be trying to emulate but they just end up saying ‘really, who can be like Hanguang-jun, he’s always been perfect!’. ‘It’s lonely at the top’ is something that is so perfectly applicable here, because Lan Wangji’s desire to uphold the standards of righteousness to protect those who cant protect themselves divides him from the general populace, placing him firmly as unreachable, above all the rest.
Both Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian’s unyielding righteousness and nobility is one of their greatest strengths and a very admirable character trait to have, but it also ends up being their greatest tragedy, because it isolates them from all that they love or could love. It even pushes them away from each other, because Lan Wangji is trying so desperately to pull Wei Wuxian to his side and make him adhere to the only way he can understand others (through his impossible standards), but Wei Wuxian is unmoving in his defence of the Wen’s, helping them when no one else will. Unstoppable force meets immovable object?
Of course, there are so many differences between Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian but really, those are all pretty surface level. Wei Wuxian’s mind works a million miles per hour, thinking of countless solutions and strategies, whereas Lan Wangji adheres to the traditional problem solving solutions. Wei Wuxian is loud and vibrant, and Lan Wangji is stoic and cold. Wei Wuxian wears black, and Lan Wangji wears white. Simple observations can tell you how they differ, because they obviously aren't the same and it would be weird if they were. These differences are important to consider, but their similarities are crucial to the development of their relationship too.
