Boys don't cry - Mike has to evolve his art
Thanks to the YouTube algorithm Boys don't cry was brought to my attention. I know there are a lot of analysis and theories about it and I am pretty late to that party.
But yesterday I was thinking about instruments in Stranger Things and Mike's Guitar in his room and a probably recently used upright piano in the background of the Wheeler's house (Recently used because it still has music scores on it and I doubt Karen would let those laying around)
Tumblr media
It is pretty much in the focus in this shot from S4E7 when they finished interrogating Max and Dustin tells her to come with him. Then the camera tills and boom it is shown to us in this brief moment.
But back to my original thought.
The lyrics of Boys don't Cry fit perfectly for pre S4 Mike who doesn't feel like Will wants to be his friend anymore. I mean
Tumblr media
···
That is literally what I expect Mike to feel when he is unable to reach Will over and over again.
I would say I'm sorry
If I thought that it would change your mind
But I know that this time
I have said too much
Been to unkind
Tumblr media
I would tell you that I loved you
If I thought that you would stay
But I know that it's no use
And you've already gone away
Tumblr media
Misjudged your limits
Pushed you too far
Took you for granted
Thought that you needed me more, more, more
Tumblr media

So what if he played Boys don't cry between the byers leaving and spring break whenever he had a bad day or so. It's just not the original version but a more melancholic acoustic version Mike strums when he is upset and feels like Will doesn't want to talk to him anymore.
Also what I find pretty important to point out:
When Will accepted his feelings for Mike he eveloved his art. Will would often gift his drawings to Mike, ever since they were little. I mean Mike has so many put up in his basement and bedroom and a binder full of drawings but to show his true feelings Will doesn't make a drawing for Mike with pencils and crayons like he used to.
No he paints a painting with (acrylic?) paint. This is a totally different kind of art we don't see Will ever use before. I mean I'm not a art proffesional but from my art classes from school I know that there is a pretty heavy difference between drawing with a pencil and painting with a brush.
So in S5 for Mike to show his feelings he has to evolve his art too. We know that Mike writes campaigns for his friends (and semicanonically through the comics specifically for Will). So Mike might evolve his writing from campaigns to songs. And we might even see the process of it. Mike strumming boys don't cry in his cover, Will knowing the song very good noticing that the chords have changed and asking about since when Mike plays guitar and stuff. And in the end when Mike is finally able to tell Will how he really feels Mike plays a song about Will the Wise because DnD is Bylers love language.

~I’ll Make A Man Out Of You ~
Tumblr media
Hey hey hey!! I was listening to some metal covers on YouTube the other day and since this singer happened to look like a non-curly version of Silver I jumped into the idea :D
So imagine Long John Silver singing this [“I’ll Make a Man Out of You“ (from Mulan) but it’s A METAL COVER by Dan Vasc] while "training" the troops in Black Sails s3-s4. So basically he’s just repeating what Flint, DeGroot, Billy, Anne or whoever actually knows what they are doing is instructing... and all the crews are really loving his way of telling things, so they gladly listen to him, lol. At the same time he’s taking a crash course in how to be a leader.
Tumblr media
And if you want to add some sad meta stuff? Silver is building “A Man” out of himself too, instead of “just” being seen as a creature / cripple, a coward, a-not-joiner, a thief and so on, because he cannot be seen weak in front of the men anymore and now has to step up to play the part of the Pirate King... so it’s also a pep talk to himself.
Tumblr media
OR! Imagine Flint singing the song (mentally in his mind if not aloud) while training Silver “to fight and not die”:
“Once you find your center / You are sure to win”
*cut to Flint playfully knocking out the new crutch a few times so Silver can start getting used to fighting with it and find balance* Add some training montage on the cliffs and admiring smiles and glances! “Let’s get down to business!”  ;)
“You’re the saddest bunch [of lies] I ever met / But you can bet before we’re through / Mister, I’ll make a man King out of you”
Tumblr media
Or just generally imagine Flint singing another cover version of the song (one fitting his vocals better?). Maybe already in s1 or s2 with his twirly mustache, sweaty ponytail and unhinged anger! >:D The song fits well his rousing speeches and him being better at everything than everybody else (and showing it too, lol) while promising to make them the princes men of the New World (and training them to fight against the civilization that is coming).
Tumblr media
OR! (a long shot into the dark but I thought I would share it anyway...) somehow connect some later verses with Silver’s plan of returning Flint into “a mortal man” instead of the legend / god-like status of his name if you want to exaggerate or bring some fantasy elements in there... (˵ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°˵)
Tumblr media
I don’t know how to put all these swirling thoughts into words properly... but first he’s singing about how Flint must be all the Forces of Nature (hello superstitious Silver! and hello James holding on to the part of being Flint even if it’s destroying him because he feels like he has to!).
Then Silver could be sort of singing how to bring “Captain Flint” down, make him walk away from the war and live, crying out the verse “How could can I make a man McGraw out of you?~“ before finding one solution and reuniting him with his old love... reorienting him to the daylight and to the man he once was, so to speak.
Too much? Oops! (ʘ‿ʘ✿) Back to the lighter stuff:
* * * * * * * *
The other voices on the song can be:
“I'm never gonna catch my breath” - (DeGroot, grumpily)
“Say goodbye to those who knew me“ - (Vane, that growl! xD)
“Boy, was I a fool in school for cutting gym“ - (Rackham or Featherstone)
“This guy's got 'em scared to death“ - (Billy, pleased with his plan but not yet knowing how majorly he just fucked up)
“Hope he doesn't see right through me“ - (Max or Eleanor)
“Now I really wish that I knew how to swim” - (Rackham, watching how Anne leaves to do some watery guerilla stuff while he stays on the ship, alone ;_; )
Tumblr media
* * * * * * * *
Plus, I find that “Be A Man” choir in the background hilarious (in a good way). Imagine the training montage with the crews and especially Teach looking so stern and trying to drill those macho ideals in them because “it’s the only way to be a proper pirate” or something pfffft.
Tumblr media
Also imagine the bonding and tentative friendships with the pirates and the Maroons if they have some joint exercises. Some levity to the grim reality of the upcoming war, let’s have some shenanigans!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway, the point was, imagine Silver having to adapt and play the part of the Pirate King and it somehow manifests as singing metal* and rousing the people that way! >:D
(>。<)ノ ♩✧♪●♩○♬☆ヽ(≧▽≦)ノ  (*and disney songs, lol)
Tumblr media
You / We must be swift as a coursing river With all the force of a great typhoon With all the strength of a raging fire Mysterious as the dark side of the moon ~
Time is racing toward us till the Huns Brits* arrive    (*and Spain) Heed my every order and you might survive You're unsuited for the rage of war So pack up, go home you're through How could I make a man out of you?
* * * * * *
Lastly, maybe he gets swept by the high energy and the power of darkness the more he gets into doing it and ends up even enjoying himself sometimes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Oooh, also don’t forget that the music would be played with hurdy-gurdies, clacking bones, broken pianos and such! 8D
So yeah, some various thoughts happened *dumps these gleefully on your dash and continues enjoying the song * ☆゚°˖* ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
Here’s a quick bonus edit for the mood:

Total Drama Music Camp AU - playlist / performance ideas
here she is,,,, the cursed secret texts,,,,, the total drama music camp playlist , along with some short explanations below, cringe city bitch (most of these are just covers that i feel are the closest to the performance Style id imagine for these characters and not necessarily the exact sound but u feel me) also i went back and tagged my previous posts abt this concept with “td music camp au” so if you dont know what the helling fuck im talking abt plz have a gander xoxo
link: youtube .com/playlist?list=PL-bPcaq3ZK2L682RHPauxrsFIPvGJdsiM (space is there so tumblr hopefully doesnt nerf me from the tag 🥺 )
Some Nights - ok so first weeks challenge. i feel like chris would just want them to all collab together on one huge group performance. kinda like on the first day of school when they make you do the ‘get to know you’ tests. idk exactly who would sing what parts tho bc there are so many so let your imagination run wild !!
Hand crushed by a mallet - ok. OKYAY. im a home of sexual. but this is a Cody, Trent, Tyler, Harold and Izzy song. Cody is on vocals (especially the rap in this version shdofsgjsk), Trent is on guitar and some vocals (does some back and forth with him during the rap), Tyler is on drums (and does that one tiny background screamy bit towards the end), Izzy and Harold are joined up on creating the background track and DJing the whole thing. the distortion/choppy part at the end is izzy LIVE going ape on the audio level sliders. its one of the most energetic performances of the whole series and surprises everyone including the group themselves
Misery Business - Duncan on vocals and guitar, Geoff on drums, Trent also on guitar and maybe some backup vocals. you all know i chose that bc i love associating mgk with duncan but. i rly like this idea actually ;;
Paparazzi - ezekiel. idk who the fuck else except maybe justin bc he’d dance that shit to death. i will not apologize thats Him and its fire but you may write and send any formal complaints to my po box. ill roll a blunt with them,
Pom Pom - Lindsay, Heather, Sadie+Katie, and Izzy. Lindsay and Heather are on vocals, sharing the chorus and each getting a solo verse, and ofc izzy does the weird rap part towards the end, and most of the background track. they all thought they were stuck with izzy but izzy is stuck with these preps. Sadie and Katie are on backup vocals, but their role in this one is mostly dancing and adding ✨ stage presence.
Maps - Trent is on the guitar and male vocals while Courtney is on the female vocals (the ~top two performers~ gotta have a song together eventually right), DJ on drums, Bridgette on piano. Heather, Lindsay, Justin, and Leshawna are dancers bc lbr the dance from the video is pretty good for a group number
CREEPER? AW MAN - ok this one. is kind of a joke but wouldnt it be rly hilarious if cody, ezekiel, and harold did this one mostly for fun and the whole second part with the existential breakdown was just. used with on stage satire to make fun of chris for being old or smth. like would they suffer that week, yes, would it be worth it, Y E S,
Shatter me - Eva, Courtney, Gwen, Beth. QwQ Eva’s on vocals for the first time and rocks it, Courtney is on violin, Gwen on drums, and Beth uses her instruments to make a background track before the performance so she can do stage tech/DJ stuff. oh also justin should be on this one bc i want. those costumes from t he vi deo,
Chop suey - Lindsay and Courtney on vocals (LMAOSJFkSF listen. we love contrast queens that stun the crowd), Duncan on guitar, Eva on drums (and a lot of background screaming to help the Vibe Tee Em)
Unwritten - Leshawna and Trent? ik its a weird combo but i think they’d kill this
Shake it - GEOFF LMFAOGHJKgjfdG
White Winter Hymnal - Lindsay as Kirstie, Noah probably as Avi even tho we all know he can’t sing that fuckgin low. and idk my other 3 bros as Cody, Tyler and Ezekiel. truly iconique group
Forget me too - QWQ DUNCAN AND COURTNEY ,,,,,,,,,,,, i dont apoloigze for the second mgk = duncan pick, anyways duncans also on guitar, gwen on drums (there is no love triangle in this au btw. the only reason theyre singing this song is bc of the regular ~tension~ that u see in like tdi but its just for the stage mostly. as soon as the songs over they would hug and cheer abt it)
Simple and Clean - Bridgette on singing, Gwen on piano, DJ on drums, Beth on general stage stuff + creates the backtrack with Bridgette's harmonies overlayed
Mr. Brightside - OWEN ON THE BRASS YES BBY ITS HIS TIME 2 FUCKIENG SHINE, Geoff on drums, Gwen begrudgingly on piano, Noah is on vocals and they have to literally bribe him with everything they HAVE to get him to try and sing this way. and he does it and it aint too shabby but he will never do it again
Domino - Leshawna on vocals (again these choices are all, based on general vibe and style and not necessarily voice, this is a tiny white girl singing,), Tyler on drums, Duncan on guitar. energy to the max babey the speakers are gonna blow the fuck out on this one
Starships - KATIE AND SADIE GET TO BE A MAIN DUO !!! they alternate lines , with courtney on violin, izzy on that synthy backtrack, and justin is involved in this one bc id change just a couple of things abt the music video costumes for these characters but like. [grabby hands] gimme
Bulletproof - ezekiel vibes.....? izzy and harold get to team up again for the backtrack. weird kids only karaoke night
The Wolves And The Ravens - 🥺 a geoff and bridgette songk,,,,,
Never Enough Praying (Mashup) - Courtney on Praying, Heather on Never Enough, Beth and Izzy end up together on the background stuff and make a rly nice track actually
Gasoline - bitch. you know what im gonna say but duncans on vocals, Tyler on guitar, Geoff on drums, Ezekiels on track
Better not wake the baby - Noah gets to sing a song that actually matches his style a tiny bit better lol, DJ on drums, Trent on guitar, and i feel like beth is the only one with any hope of figuring out the accordion keyboard thing thats in the background
This is Gospel - Gwen on piano and Trent on vocals. really the music video is the most important part for me bc i think a challenge where oyu have to sing a really intense emotional song while chris gets to dump shit down on your head from the ceiling of the stage. sounds perfect,
Wildest Dreams - codys on vocals bc god i am Obsessed with this cover being a bisexuality / coming out song . everybody thinks hes just regular simping and being his usual fuccboi self when he chooses this song till he gets to those Very Intentionally Unchanged Pronouns that he sings a little too enthusiastically hhhshHDSHHHSDH , also DJ on drums and Tyler on guitar
Happier - Bridgette solo !
Stay - Courtney on guitar and vocals, Dj and Harold are on the hand drum shit. once again i live for the ‘unlikely group actually works together and rocks it’ stuff. courtney as always has talent and enjoys what she does but harold and dj kind of steal the show with how in sync and energetic they are abt it lmfaodghd

knats 2020 mindspill
This nats, despite being comparatively well-known for a smaller federation’s nationals, DID NOT STREAM OUTSIDE OF KOREA. WHY. So my viewing of the nats was a bit weirder and different; thank YouTube for posting skates. I missed a bunch of skates but I watched quite a few as well.
WOMENS
Yelim Kim (김예림) 🥉
Tumblr media
HER JUMPS MAN. HER JUMPS. Honestly I don’t even know why she doesn’t get +5s for all her clean jumps (aside from lacking more complex transitions and lessening the load time) because the way time seems to slow whenever she jumps??? the delay in rotation??? the clean edges?????? the flow?!?!!!!!!! she truly is a technical badass. Her “performance” skills have been critiqued in the past—which lead to the creation of her Love Story FS—but her short really sells what Yelim does best: dark and dramatic. Her movements and eye contact really help continue to chilling feel created from Natalie Portman’s opening monologue. Her Love Story FS—I hate it. Nothing on Yelim, just that the cover of the song is bad and typically Korean (coming from a korean myself), the choreo is nothing special, the song is ever so repetitive...even the Godfather would be a better choice. The program is clearly not to my taste, but Yelim does do her best (her jumps perfect, and she’s worked with Kim Yuna to perfect her performance skills!) with what she’s got. Also her Black Swan dress? Beautiful. It looks heartbreaking and enhances her balletic beauty in a way that feels very uptight (the turtleneck collar) which really relates to the theme of the movie.
Haein Lee (이해인)🥈
Tumblr media
SHE SLAYED!!! How many times has her Firedance FS been clean??? How is someone so consistent??? Her triple lutz could use improvement but her triple loop is a thing of beauty (if it weren’t for transitions she deserves +5) and her step sequence has made this FS my favourite out of the ladies this season. The dress is fabulous, her interpretation and performance skills are perfect—nothing more I can wish from her in Firedance! Program fits her like a glove. Her Nocturne? Uh. I don’t like it. It’s boring, the dress is nice but I have an intense hatred for sweetheart cut fronts or whatever they’re called. She’s stated she’s trying a new genre that’s more mature with the program but I feel like this genre of overplayed Nocturnes can stop. Please. Either way, a beautifully well deserved silver!!!
You Young (유영)🥇
Tumblr media
SHE LANDED THE 3A!! It’s been troubling her ever since CoC and I’m glad to see it’s back with her. Although it didn’t work as well for her in the free, I’m confident she’ll bring this killer energy to Lausanne, 4CC, and Worlds (jesus KSU last year it was Junhwan this year it’s Young??? please be kinder to your own skaters). Her Evita dress is amazingly beautiful and one of my favourite dresses ever but her program doesn’t really do much for me. It has good choreo then empty choreo—leaves me confused. (Of course this is just my opinion lol). Her skating in her RnJ short is remarkably fitting to the music, being more spastic and frantic while keeping her grace (exhibited amazingly above) and the section with the (midi?) violins has the best choreo. However both programs seem to not have enough progression throughout, which was a problem I have had with almost all of Young’s programs. This is not her fault and she takes all her programs in stride, executing them beautifully! However the choreo could use some more content to make the program feel more whole.
Honourable Mentions:
- Jihun To’s Ashes SP is also one of my favourite lyrical SPs of the season. The dress, the choreo, it’s all so perfect!
- Eunsoo ;(( She’s been having a rough season but I’m very sure she’ll recover. Her performance quality has not lost a single drop of its quality!!
MENS
June-Hyeong Lee (이준형) 🥉
Tumblr media
This was definitely a loss for him. Korean Men’s field is small and most people that get medals stay with their medals for a while, then get pushed down slowly until they don’t podium anymore. After his SP June-Hyeong seemed tense and worried, and the two falls on his FS definitely didn’t help. He’s always been a performer though—and it helped him recover quick after the first minute of the FS. His FS has some of the best and most creative choreo I’ve ever seen and his speed, his edges are very consistent and beautiful. He’s one of those skaters I would gladly watch skate without any jumps! His SP however seems off. It’s almost too chock-full with choreo. While he performs his program amazingly, I feel like he should take some time to hold lines and edges—he’s so full of choreo often in his programs and this takes out from the viewing experience. It’s always better to have more choreo than less, though, and I applaud him! He seemed pretty stuck on the flip though—he did it again during the celebration ceremony twice as if he felt discontent. Costume for the FS was beautiful and fit the music very well (elegance and simplicity mixed in with some whimsical flair provided by the velvet) but the SP one was a bit plain. Overall a hard fight done well!!
Sihyeong Lee (이시형)🥈
Tumblr media
SIHYEONG!! FIRST SILVER AT NATS!! His performances were very exquisite aside from the turn out on the 3A in his SP. I’m very VERY fond of his SP music since usually that’s the type of piano music I tend to enjoy more (Ludovico Einaudi vibes anyone?)—aaand that’s because it’s Max Richter. Fucking love that man. His choreo for his SP is perfect and really sells the buildup, and his triple jumps are almost Yelim-level quality—amazing height, very slight delay in certain jumps! His posture in his FS was a bit off, and I was scared he was going to lean too far and fall quite often throughout the program. As well, his skating gets a little slow at times. His FS was definitely nice and the costume makes his legs look three times the length of his torso. WOW he’s tall. I’m amazed his jumps are that nice at his height! A well deserved silver for Sihyeong definitely.
Cha Junhwan (차준환)🥇
Tumblr media
FIRST CLEAN FS SINCE IL POSTINO. SECOND CLEAN SP OF THE SEASON. HE’S OVERCOMING HIS SLUMP Y’ALL. His quad toe looks much better and controlled (a hint of delay I see? but that might be because of the way I count rotations in jumps) and his quad sal has stopped having a rug pulled out from under him. Again, I prefer his quad toe to his quad sal because he actually rotates his quad toe more times than he rotates his quad sal, the jump he does almost 3x more frequently. However his quad sal is always a thing of controlled beauty aside from the ur problems! His 3Lz is also actually an outside edge now!!! (Sometimes; it’s quite shallow) His programs have definitely grown on him and his performance quality keeps going up and up every time he performs it. Ina Bauer, step sequence—everything went perfectly for him! I’m so proud :)

so i have a few friends who’ve been wanting to get into vav but dunno where to start so... i’ll just do this lil thing. obviously there’s gonna be my own opinions so don’t take everything i say to heart but like... here we go

also!! super hyper fluff ball. hims cute.
aegyo up the wazoo too
former happyface ent trainee with ayno
was in the fri.sat.sun teasers by dalshabet
can get p loud & annoying but that doesnt change how much we love him
idk if any of that made sense... but there you go! there’s so much more to vav and everything they do and who they are, so i hope this just kinda gets more people to look into them? it’s a stepping stone, not everything possible to learn.
+ keep in mind, a lot of this stuff comes from both kprofiles, what i’ve seen in videos, and my own personal opinions & inputs. so... yeah. don’t use what i say as truth/fact unless you see stuff to back it up (or you adopt it as your own opinion idk).
thank you for taking your time to read this!!

Interview with Max Gowan
You may remember the prolific singer-songwriter, Max Gowan, from WKNC’s Double Barrel Benefit earlier this year. The Raleigh native turned Virginia-resident gives us a look into his most recent album release, Bygones, which is set to produce its first music video later this month. Gowan is promoting this release through WKNC by generously giving us a teaser trailer for the project. The music video for “7th Day” by Max Gowan can be promo’d above and further questions about Gowan and his artistry can be read below.
Music Video Questions: First and foremost….. please give credit to the creators! Who helped you create this video? This video was made by Lake Park Productions which is a group of my friends Cary, Nathan, and Coleman, and probably some other folks who I haven’t met yet. They are awesome and I couldn’t be happier with the work they do.
With what concept did you approach the videographers when starting this video? I wasn’t sure what I wanted for the video when I went to my friend Cary’s team to see if they were interested. We talked about it and I told them the song was generally about a sense of unease and dread that I sometimes get that can be pretty consuming. They thought it would be cool to build a miniature town out of household toys and stuff they found and build tension throughout the video until the town ultimately floods. I was like “yeah, that’s perfect.”
To what degree does psychedelia inspire this music video? I guess a lot of people would consider the song itself to be fairly psychedelic, because it’s focused on building textures in kind of an abstract way, so I think they tried to make the video reflect that. I like things that evoke emotion without being overly direct.
To whom does this video pay homage? Who are your inspirations, if you have any? I know very little about film and movies but I’m sure the team that made this video had inspiration from lots of places. They were shooting in a style called “Macro” I believe, and I’m sure there are lots of filmmakers and directors covering new ground with that technique. I know it’s not similar at all, but for some reason, the video sometimes makes me think of Wallace and Gromit which I grew up on, I loved that claymation stuff.
I like the contrast between glowing and iridescent imagery inside the structures and for your profile's color scheme. The contrast between their vibrancy and the mundanity of the tiny town must have been intentional. Can you elaborate on that a little bit more for me? I didn’t know that was going to be done until I saw the finished video for the first time. I love it! I’m sure the filmmakers could speak better about it than me, but my reading is that everything in the video is an inanimate object, except for the shots of me playing guitar. So it’s almost like they’re making the play-pretend world seem very grounded in reality, but the actual footage of the real world seem more like a daydream. It’s a cool subversion.
Why did you select this song to be the featured single/music video off of Bygones? It was the first song I ever made for the album and I think I chose it for the single because I thought it had the most immediate appeal. I’m happy with how the guitar interludes turned out. Those sections have two guitar parts layered together that probably shouldn’t work but for some reason they did!
Common themes between your two music videos, "7th Day" and the video for "Couch" are time-passing (the flood in 7th Day and the train in Couch), light leaks, close-ups of your guitar, and photo-negative images of your scenery. What's the carryover between the two videos? How are they related if at all? Why do you like those motifs? Cary and his team also made the video for Couch, so I think those might be markings of their style. But I advocated for a lot of those choices too because I think I’m usually very conscious of the passage of time and of how things can seem surreal. I’m probably a little too focused on it, I guess that’s why I make music about it.
Ultimately, that small town is destroyed by water and the lights go out, why? That part to me is like...the extreme logical conclusion of any irrational fear or delusion. The idea that it could consume you. It doesn’t usually happen but I feel like it’s a fear that most people probably share.
Ever heard of the book, the Giver? You being the only thing in color reminds me a lot of that. I loved The Giver! That was probably my favorite book I read the whole year of 6th grade. I hadn’t at all thought about the connection there but you’re very right and I’m sure that subconsciously made me like this video even more.
Do you plan on releasing more music videos for this album? I would like to release more. I think I’d either want to do one for the song “Overpass” or the song “Knocking” but it will probably be a while before we can get anything going.
When can we expect this music video to come out and where can it be found once it is? I think our goal right now is late August or early September. It will be posted on my music YouTube channel and it will probably be premiering on some blogs as well. But YouTube is a safe bet.
The interview continued on to cover a variety of subjects. For further insight into Max Gowan as an artist and person, continue reading. The following Q-and-A does not directly pertain to the music video for “7th Day.”
Why is "Blue Kite" such a good song? It is my personal favorite! Haha, I’m glad you like that one. I’m really happy with how it turned out but for some reason it’s not one of my more popular tracks...I guess it’s a little slow and dark. I’ve never made something before that centered so heavily on piano and drums - that was a lot of fun to explore.
Do you have a favorite released track? I think my favorite released song of mine is probably this one called “Bad Breeze.” It came together really fast and just felt like the kind of song I’ve always wanted to make. I thought people would hate it at first because I could see how someone would think it’s goofy or weird, but I think it’s my most played song on Spotify which is a cool feeling!
Favorite and least favorite song that isn't by you? I hate to throw people under the bus but I heard this song “Lover Is A Day” by Cuco and it drove me INSANE. It’s kind of like a standard Ultra Chill Dream Pop song but I just really didn’t like the rambling vocals and instrumentation. Then I looked and saw the song is 7 minutes long. It just kept doing the same thing the whole time...the audacity. I’m probably just an asshole though. I’m sure the dude is talented it’s just not my thing. My favorite song is probably “Helicopter” by Deerhunter. Probably a very uncool opinion among Deerhunter fans but it’s everything I love in music.
Who are your musical icons that you admire? I listened to a bunch of death metal in middle school and then got really into Elliott Smith and Deerhunter in high school. I think those two artists plus Spirit of the Beehive, Broken Social Scene, and Alex G are probably the most influential for my music. I’ve also been listening to a ton of Tierra Whack lately, she’s amazing.
What have you done since Double Barrel Benefit? Double Barrel Benefit was awesome, we were really glad we got to play! Since then I finished my last semester and graduated college. I worked a couple of different jobs this summer and am moving back to Raleigh and job searching there.
What goals do you have for yourself going forward? I think my goal is to find a job that I am satisfied with that also allows me some time for working on music. As far as music goes, I think it’s easy to get caught up in thinking “in five years I should have this many listeners and be playing in X size room” but the world doesn’t work like that. I’ll be happy if I can keep making albums that I enjoy more than my previous stuff.
Where can people listen to your music online? You can find it under my name on Spotify and Apple Music or you can go to maxgowan.bandcamp.com
Soup or salad with your sandwich? Salad! I could use the fiber.

Tumblr media
just wanted to put a little something together because we all get pooped at the end of a busy busy week
i. face masks!!! after my skin routine at night, if i’m feeling like i need a little treat, i’ll whip out a cute little face mask to calm my skin as i read a book / scroll through social media / take a little nap on my bed.
my favorite brands are mediheal (they have super cute line collabs), nature republic, and papa recipe (the honey mask smells AMAZING), but if you’re feeling a little bougie, go for the dr. jart rubber mask (hydration is my favorite) or the jayjun real water brightening black mask.
2. calming music  i love listening to lofi music or instrumentals - especially piano or cello. bonus is if it’s a kpop song cover. and when i mean listening to music, i seriously mean just finding a comfortable place to sit or lie and just be there, with the music of your choice. if you have a designated calming playlist, perfect! because that’s all you really need. youtube has great compilations (1, 2) and my favorite piano covers are created by funguypiano, doopiano, and smyang!
3. watch something
watch an episode of your favorite show, vlive, or some youtube (since i don’t watch tv anymore, i somehow always end up on vlive and then youtube afterwards). but don’t forget to set a time limit, maybe an hour max. remember, binge sessions will only add stress.
4. read a book  get in the zone for some peace and quiet. there’s not much to say except to find a place to chill and get some of that reading going. here’s my goodreads if anyone is interested!
5. take a walk  after dinner, walking around your neighborhood is a great way to digest. i like to take around thirty minutes without any electronics and stroll around. try not to listen to music. instead, listen to the world around you. enjoy the little things–the cicadas chirping, the laughter of kids, the wind blowing past–and just observe.
6. exercise  as everyone knows, exercises releases endorphins. personally, i love running in nature so i get to embrace my surroundings and enjoy the view while i work out my body! remember to curate a playlist so you can always jam out whether your working out at the gym or outside.
7. hang out with friends considering it’s the end of a long week, meeting up with friends over a meal or dinner is a lovely way to vent and get everything out. talking is a great way to destress, and when there is someone you trust listening, the entire process is extremely therapeutic.
8. clean and declutter yes. do it. because cleaning and working is a destress mechanism even though it is more work. having a fresh room or work area will also freshen up and clear your mind. your environment reflects your inner thoughts, so tidying up your belongings will inspire you to refresh your mind for a new week!!!
9. create  this can mean anything including doodles, collages, printing pictures, scrap booking, or writing. similar to talking to a friend, having an outlet to brain dump all the jumbled thoughts has a cleansing effect. grab a blank notebook and get everything out in any form you prefer. (on another note, i’ve been meaning to try out morning pages. it seems super helpful for practicing mindfulness)
and that is all i hope everyone found these tips helpful!!!

REVIEW: JORDAN MAX REVEALS TALES OF US ON NEW EP
Jordan Max released new EP, Tales Of Us, which came out yesterday (November 9), released via label, Neon Gold. Jordan Max is a bluesy British singer songwriter with soulful undertones.  A native of Oldham, England maybe it’s Northern soul in the blood.  He's evocative of names like Zak Abel, John Newman, Tom Odell and Raleigh Ritchie. In 2016 Max released a pair of well-received singles, “Hell” and “Let Me Lay Down”. He then followed up with his debut EP, Only One Is King, in March 2017. Singles for this EP are “War” and “Me, Mary And My Guitar”.  Jordan Max’s latest video, released two days ago (November 8), “Kingdom”, can be seen on YouTube, here. The exploratory “War”, opens with sedate piano, kind of bleak.  Either or, peace or war. Suddenly instrumentation fires like artillery, heavy and rocking. His voice is bluesy with some grit to it.  It ends as it begun, back on the piano. “Me, Mary And My Guitar” sounds submerged.  It’s really percussive, helped with some solid riffing to embolden it. Things pare back for the middle, briefly. This reoccurs, sedate, this time a little longer.  “Now I’m alone/Keep playing my favourite songs/No happy homes/No nightmares, now she’s gone,” suits the dynamics of the track, pause for thought pondering his isolation. “Kingdom” has teary eyed string accompanied by sparse, gentle piano keys and vocal much the same.  Delicate. His voice then searches for the skies, loud, high and powerful.  “Many sacrifice for someone else’s kingdom” profound, like the casualties of conflict.  Generals the last in line because of their cowardice.  Then the closing moments, lines like, “…already shed my tears”.  Is this mourning the fallen?  If so, it’s quiet like reflection.  Indeed, it can’t be done amidst clattering cacophony. “Pray” is noodling yet calm, talk of going down to the Jobcentre.  Soulful swing not overbearing.  Talk of sunshine threatens to be tropes of the genre, but it doesn’t sound contrived.  The feelings on display are genuine.  You can just about hear organ, and you picture gospel in Black America.  Ethereal whisper then takes hold like the voices of loved ones since departed. “Careless” is striking, subdued and somewhat in a funk resulting from lack of clarity.  Discombobulated.  Latterly it becomes quite rousing before the eeriness returns, and it’ll make you jump if you don’t get into the swing off anticipating the stabbing rhythms.  “Money won’t set us free in this world” like said clarity finally unfurled from all the tight knots tied.  Indeed, the lone piano conveys clarity in its emphatic chord. The answers to life track, “Sick And Tired”, comes next.  This features long, mournful sustained notes on the guitar.  Vocals then adjoin, very ponderous and intermittent.  Lines like, “…wasting so much time achieving nothing” like making a stand and changing your life. The answers?  “Find pleasure from what you love, promise to always stay strong”.  He seems to repeat this arc, this time louder.  Emphatic so changes can be reinforced with ever louder repetition. Even the percussion becomes more pronounced. Epic finishing track, “Not Blaming You”, opens with, “…got the grey clouds over my head”.  Even the instrumentation sounds like this particular dreaded kind of weather.  The pounding drum like a bus driving past and sending a hail of water all over your new jeans and trainers.  Jordan knows it’s not your fault, though.  Is that rumbles of thunder, closing? This is proof Jordan Max can cover a reasonably diverse range of styles and still be in control and not get lost in the mix.  It helps to have a good voice, but he’s so much more than that.  This EP, however, garnered highlights “War”, “Me, Mary And My Guitar” and “Kingdom”.  However, this selection could always change with the weather.  Which, indeed, links with the thoughts expressed during the EP’s closer, “Not Blaming You”. Had this EP not’ve been as bold as it is, Jordan Max might not’ve arrested the listener’s attention as he does.  There’s some rocking moments, soulful moments all with a bluesy voice that can handle most of which ever thrown his way.  What’s more, he scored a solid three out of seven tracks.  Excellent against the very good. He sets high standards, in other words. Jordan Max’s Tales Of Us EP can be bought on iTunes, here.

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 22/05/2021 (Olivia Rodrigo, J. Cole’s ‘The Off-Season’, Nicki Minaj)
Yeah, it’s a big week, given the impact of J. Cole, Jorja Smith, Olivia Rodrigo (more on that next week) and the remaining impact of the BRIT Awards. There’s a lot of nonsense on this chart, a busy as hell one at that, but this surprisingly did not affect the #1, as the remix to “Body” by Russ Millions and Tion Wayne spends a third week at the top. Let’s just attack this head on. Welcome back to REVIEWING THE CHARTS.
Tumblr media
Rundown
First of all, let’s get this nonsense out of the way: what happened to songs already on the UK Top 75 chart, which is what I cover? Well, a fair few of them dropped out. Any song that spent five or more weeks in the chart or peaked in the top 40 is considered a notable drop-out, and this week, they include “Wants and Needs” by Drake featuring Lil Baby off of the return last week, “Track Star” by Mooski, “Heat” by Paul Woolford and Amber Mark, “6 for 6” by Central Cee, “Patience” by KSI featuring YUNGBLUD and Polo G, “Hold On” by Justin Bieber, “We’re Good” by Dua Lipa, “Commitment Issues” by Central Cee (Gosh, didn’t think J. Cole would take a chunk out of this guy’s audience specifically), “Up” by Cardi B, “Streets” by Doja Cat and finally, “Get Out My Head” by Shane Codd, but also interestingly “i n t e r l u d e” by J. Cole dropping out off of the top 40 debut despite the album boost. This doesn’t mean it didn’t perform well but rather this is demonstrating this silly chart rule where in the top 100, one artist can only have three songs, preventing album bombs that you see on the US Billboard Hot 100. It makes the chart less accurate but arguably more diverse and hence fun for me to talk about.
There are also a few returning entries to add some fuel to this chart fire, one that has already combusted in the US this week, as “Slumber Party” by Ashnikko featuring Princess Nokia is back at #70 thanks to the video, “All You Ever Wanted” by Rag’n’Bone Man is back at #51 thanks to a delayed album boost, and the same can be said for “Addicted” by Jorja Smith at #49.
Then we have our notable losses, songs that fell at least five spots down the chart this week, including “WITHOUT YOU” by the Kid LAROI at #18, “Higher Power” by Coldplay falling big off of the debut at #25, “Your Power” by Billie Eilish at #26, “Didn’t Know” by Tom Zanetti at #28, “Heat Waves” by Glass Animals at #30, “Leave the Door Open” by Silk Sonic at #31, “Don’t You Worry About Me” by Bad Boy Chiller Crew at #39, “Latest Trends” by A1 x J1 at #46, “Last Time” by Becky Hill at #52, “All I Know So Far” by P!nk at #55 off of the debut, “My Head & My Heart” by Ava Max at #57, “Martin & Gina” by Polo G at #58, “Miss the Rage” by Trippie Redd featuring Playboi Carti dropping hard off of the debut at #60 (Really, what was expected here?), Travis Scott’s remix of HVME’s remix of Travis Scott’s “Goosebumps” at #61, “Cover Me in Sunshine” by P!nk and Willow Sage Heart at #63, “Don’t Play” by Anne-Marie, KSI and Digital Farm Animals at #65, “Sunshine (The Light)” by Fat Joe, DJ Khaled and Amorphous at #66, “Tonight” by Ghost Killer Track featuring D-Block Europe and Oboy at #71, and finally, “Calling My Phone” by Lil Tjay and 6LACK at #73.
That’s not to say there weren’t any notable gains however as we do have some interesting remnants of BRITs excitement and some other reasons for our gains this week, which include “One Day” by Lovejoy (more on them later) at #54, “It’s a sin” by Elton John and Years & Years at #47, “Way Too Long” by Nathan Dawe, Anne-Marie and MoStack at #43, “drivers license” by Olivia Rodrigo at #35 off of the success of “good 4 u” (again, more on that later), “Black Hole” by Griff at #23 thanks to the BRITs, and finally, “deja vu” by Olivia Rodrigo at #11. Really, all of this is just me stalling because this is a massive week – I’m writing this early – let’s just get through this... starting with—oh, for God’s sake.
NEW ARRIVALS
#75 – “Taunt” – Lovejoy
Produced by Cameron Nesbitt
Two weeks in a row, ladies and gentlemen: Minecraft YouTuber-core. How this happens I have no idea but regardless, the people of the UK seem to enjoy this Wilbur Soot guy’s new band. Is the new single better than the last one that charted from this EP, at least? Well, yeah, it is, mostly because at least this one’s an actual pop rock tune that, whilst derivative again, has more hooks than “One Day”, especially those stop-and-start-again verses that give me mathcore flashbacks, just with less of a catharsis to come from it other than that infectious, trumpet-laden chorus. The content is pretty gross if anything, seemingly focusing in on this past relationship from secondary school in which Wilbur tears into a girl for being insecure despite her privileges... for seemingly no reason. I mean, surely, you’ve moved on, right? Thankfully, Wilbur does get his comeuppance by the end of the song as the girl throws his drink at him, but it does leave the rest of the song with a pretty spiteful taste in my mouth that can’t be avoided by some pretty, 2000s indie rock-esque instrumentals. It doesn’t help that Wilbur Soot is such a non-presence as well, which I can see improving as the band goes on to record more material but the problem is with this early stage is that for now, it’s all rather primitive... yet it’s still charting. Oh, and if any people happen to find this that are fans of this guy, I am terrified of you so I’ll clarify that I don’t dislike this band at all, I’m just not a fan of what I’ve heard. I just wanted to put that out there because I value my personal information.
#74 – “Crocodile Teeth” – Skillibeng
Produced by Adde Instrumentals and Johnny Wonder
So last week, Nicki Minaj re-released her classic 2009 mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty onto official streaming services for the first time, with a remastered mix of some of her classic remixes as well as some new tracks or fan-favourite loosies sprinkled in. Why do I say this in reference to some random unrelated track, you ask? Well, we’ll get back to Nicki later but this song was actually remixed by Nicki and appears on that mixtape, despite baring no resemblance or relation to that mixtape at all, given this was released in 2020. The UK Singles Chart is particularly inconsistent is crediting remixes however, so we have the original here and, for what it’s worth, I quite like this. Skillibeng isn’t the most interesting presence but does his job in being vaguely menacing and violent over this cheap piano-led Afroswing instrumental with some questionable bass mastering. The song is in Patois but you can get the gist that it’s gunplay and flexing, typically stuff you’d hear in any UK drill track and it’s generic for sure but catchy enough to ignore. This version of the song is completely passable but I do think it is elevated by Nicki’s short introductory verse on the remix. I’d obviously have preferred there be more interplay but the remix was probably only known to Skillibeng when Nicki’s lawyers reached out anyway.
#72 – “Straightenin” – Migos
Produced by DJ Durel, Atake, Sluzyyy, OSIRIS, Nuki and Slime Castro
So Migos are finally preparing to release their highly-anticipated record Culture III as the boys are back together after some time apart, in which they have had varying levels of success, with Offset probably delivering the best solo material because he has both the best qualities of Takeoff and Quavo and always delivers on guest verses... I’m sorry, what about this needed six producers? This beat is not bad by any stretch with some vague flute loop eerily played under a rote trap beat, of which the bounced 808s are probably of most interest, but I do not understand how one person, let alone just an AI, couldn’t have made this alone. Regardless, the beat is good enough to make Quavo sound like he finally cares, even if he’s just going to talk about how he just saw Tenet – a bit late to the party – and how he turned a pandemic to a “band-emic”. Yeah, okay, so we’re going to ignore Mr. Quavious and move onto Takeoff and Offset who... at least have some good flows, albeit just the same triplet deliveries they’ve had for years. I think the most interesting part about this whole song is the slippery backing vocal that follows Quavo in the later choruses, which shows an attention to detail I missed from these guys. There’s only so much I can hear Quavo say “don’t nothin’ get straight ‘bout straightenin’” before I lose my mind, though, especially by the time we get to that awkward outro, so I can’t call myself a fan of this. If we’re speaking trap-rap from acts on hiatus, I really would have preferred “Lay wit Ya” by Isaiah Rashad and Duke Deuce to chart but I guess these guys will do.
#64 – “Independence Day Freestyle” – Fredo
Produced by Handz
By the end of this episode, I will never want to hear skittering hi-hats ever again. For now, however, we’ve got the same genre, different country as we go home to Fredo, a British rapper who’s pretty consistently good to be fair to him and did release an album I liked earlier this year. This is just a random freestyle he dropped last week because he felt like it, and here it is on the chart. Okay, well, it isn’t an actual freestyle because nothing that’s called a freestyle actually is in 2021, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a trap banger in itself and it’s got the foundation for it. I love the eerie chipmunk vocal sample that adds a touch of soul to the menacing keys before they get drowned out by trap percussion and Fredo going through his typical rags-to-riches commentary and memories of gang violence in one massive verse that somehow keeps my interest throughout the entire three minutes. The flow is about as smooth as it gets with UK rap, typically a lot stiffer, especially in drill, and the mixing’s fine, so yeah, I can’t really complain. I’d have preferred a chorus, obviously, and there are extended freestyles we’ll talk about later that do this a lot better, but for now, I can dig this, especially considering it’s pretty damn quotable for what it is. “If I fell off, I must have fell off the stairs into some elevators” is a bar, as is when he says he’s got more foreign cars than an Asian wedding or when he calls himself “Lord of the Bling”... okay, maybe that one’s not as impressive.
#62 – “The Great Escape” – Blanco and Central Cee
Produced by LiTek and WhyJay
Central Cee is a more familiar name but you may not know Blanco who, despite the collaboration with Cee making it ripe for comparison and comedy, is not a French white rapper. Rather, he’s from pioneering drill group Harlem Spartans and this is actually his first solo charting song thanks to Cee’s appearance. As you’d expect, this has some loud drill production and vague acoustic guitar loop as well as some stuttering vocal production peppered with dark 808s (that do bang here in all honesty) and pointless alarm sounds. Whilst drill is so standardised now, I do actually like this beat because it’s what I want to hear Cee on; sure, it’s got the guitar and the flutes but it’s also got a sax riff, which is what made “Loading” so fun. Blanco himself is also a more charming presence than Cee and their two energies bounce off of each other pretty well, even if the most witty their punchlines get are just referencing Powerpuff Girls characters... and when they’re not basic, they’re borderline incoherent but whatever, this is a fun slice of misogyny and violence that you’d expect from the genre with at least some care put into it. Not bad at all.
#56 – “Bussdown” – Jorja Smith featuring Shaybo
Produced by Riccardo Damian, Jeff “Gitty” Gitelman and Kal Banx
This is the break-out single from the most recent “project” from Jorja Smith, going the Drake route of not bothering to name it an album, mixtape or EP, and this one features London rapper Shaybo in a track about materialism but not as much embracing it as becoming increasingly alienated by it as whilst wealth may bring you luxury and connections, it detaches you from reality, which is the point in Shaybo’s verses about being Miss Naive, someone who is increasingly aggressive as a result because, well, she always gets what she wants, right? This is not a project I listened to but the content is promising... until I actually hear the song, with its awkward, clattering percussion showered in overwhelming vocal mixing that fails in whatever intimacy it attempts to present, and that’s before the decidedly unsubtle air horns and guitar licks. The song is minimal enough for the content to kind of fall flat as well, as a song like this feels like it deserves more than a slick bass groove, rather some kind of maximalist yet subtlety eerie production. I’m thinking Shaybo would actually make more sense there than she would here as well as her awkward, pathetic-sounding flow is delivered in the most dead-pan cadence, so much so that it drifts off fully into background “vibe” music but even then, it feels too distracting in the mix to work as that. I did want to like this but it just ends up as a really disappointing track from Jorja Smith, once again.
#42 – “Seeing Green” – Nicki Minaj, Drake and Lil Wayne
Produced by GOVI and Kid Masterpiece
We’re half-way through our batch of new arrivals and what better way to celebrate than a posse cut by three rappers long past their prime by now without a chorus that pushes six minutes? Normally, that would be sarcastic, but in this case it is absolutely not as this is awesome. I love 2000s hip-hop and a chipmunk soul-inflected beat blended with early 2010s era proto-trap production is obviously going to appeal to me as that type of contrast is what I love about more lyrical hip-hop, hell, I wouldn’t have been surprised if it was said this was a Kanye beat or more accurately perhaps one by Harry Fraud. It helps that over that gorgeous soul sample we have all three rappers proving they still have it as performers, with some detailed verses from the classic Young Money crew that if nothing else provide a perfect nostalgia button for their era of dominance in hip-hop, not that it’s ever stopped since. I also just love hearing Lil Wayne hungry again, because I am a pretty big fan of his voice, delivery and even some of his wordplay and one-liners, all of which he expresses perfectly in his high-energy verse that switches through flaws as if it were all some off-the-top freestyle, and knowing Wayne, it might as well could have been. I love how he starts his verse off by shooting a guy and then saying it was his bad for doing it because he was a “good cat” and somehow it gets more off the rails afterwards, as he calls his girl a vacuum and says he’s peeing lean, before this self-proclaimed “badonkadonk bikini fiend” reminisces about his bisexual ex from Atlanta in a pretty clever use of repetition in rap. This is all with his sludged drawl of a delivery, which becomes especially important when he calls us all back to 2010 as when Wayne was in prison at his career peak, Drake always said “Free Weezy” and now 10 years later, Wayne’s saying “Free Drizzy” because Drake’s locked up in Canada because of the COVID-19 pandemic... because of course. I know it just seems like I’m itching out tiny little details in the verse but that’s what’s so great about repeated listens to detailed and great rap verses. That’s not to say Wayne is the only stand-out here either as Nicki Minaj impresses with that confident delivery she’s known for as she clarifies her beef with Cardi B being less about her “copying her homework” as it was about her up-hill battle with the industry, she recites how bitches are infamously her sons and delivers some pretty clever and quotable lines of her own, like “brand new Vanilla Maserati, I’ve been Haagen-Daszin’”... which again sounds like a bar straight out of 2010. I think the best verse here might actually be from Drake as much as I hate to say it, with bravado out of the gate that seems pretty deserved for someone with as immense success as he’s had. Not only is he referencing back to 2010 and even his Degrassi days, comparing it to the run-up to his upcoming album since he’s back on two crutches, but he’s also delivering some of his most interesting and quotable lines in years, and it all runs off so effortlessly and smoothly, but with a constant hunger and conviction reminding me of some of his deeper cuts like “Dreams Money Can Buy”. I won’t go further than I already have with this song – even though I could gladly quote practically the entirety of Drake’s verse, even when he aspires to be Vladimir Putin (I guess it’s better than accidentally comparing himself to Hitler) – but I’ve rambled on enough about this wonderful track. Triumphant lyrical rapping over soulful vocal loops will never be a thing I stop having a fondness for; these are some of my nostalgia biases creeping in – especially since these aren’t close to being the best verses any of the trio have delivered – but it’s so great hearing all three back on form together. Check this out if you haven’t as it’s absolutely a highlight off of the mixtape’s re-release.
#37 – “Build a Bitch” – Bella Poarch
Produced by Sub Urban and Elle Rizk
Bella Poarch is a name I had to search up and it turns out she is another one of these TikTok stars turned pop singers and all power to them for starting their career through such a useful and culturally important platform, honestly, and realistically, anyone regardless of their career background could make a song I enjoy, so there’s no use in dismissing them as a result, especially if I actually enjoy the concept of this song. The writing tends to be a bit childish as expected – again, more on that later – particularly when she sings lines like “Bob the Builder broke my heart and told me it needs fixing”, but the song’s theme of embracing young women for how they really are instead of Photoshopped, unrealistic beauty expectations is a message I like being expressed to her audience of teenage girls; I see it as necessary in the social media age. I do think that this message could be expressed with more tact than a Build-a-Bear parody but it never goes the slut-shaming route and is more critical of the men demanding or expecting perfection from their female partners, or on a wider scale the expectation for successful women to follow fashion and beauty trends, especially by men in their industries and fields. Poarch herself is a light-hearted vocalist kind of reminding me a bit too much of a self-serious Ashnikko but the melody in the chorus is infectious enough for me to ignore how void a personality she is. It’s harder however to ignore the stiff 808s that drown out clattering, awkward future-bass production and that drop just being really gross, kind of ruining the song in how it’s clearly a lean towards hyper-pop without fully drawing itself within that lane. Either way, this is fine, and at barely two minutes it struggles to find itself as a finished song let alone anything I can be offended by. This is remarkably okay, and that’s more than I expected.
#16 – “a m a r i” – J. Cole
Produced by T-Minus, J. Cole, Sucuki and Timbaland
These songs don’t even show up when you search them on Spotify and to be honest, I was hoping that would lead to limited success but of course, it didn’t. J. Cole’s latest album The Off-Season is yet another mediocre instalment in a dull catalogue full of rambling verses from a guy who thinks he has much more to say than he actually ends up saying, and it’s exhausting to listen let alone discuss the man’s art out of a sheer lack of personality or wit that follows his every move. His Dreamville label is filled to the brim with people more consistent, skilful and interesting than Cole has ever been so it’s just frustrating to see the label boss get all of the recognition. Regardless, I’ve never liked Cole as an artist – especially not a conscious one given the ableism, homophobia and tone-deaf exchange with Noname just last year – so I’m almost glad he’s stripped off half of the pretence of making a woke, important album. He’s just rapping on this record, which gives me the excuse to run through the rest of these consecutive bores from Cole as quickly as possible. First of all, we have “a m a r i”, a barely sufferable dud from the album scored by a blend of acoustic guitars and squelching trap percussion that fails to platform Cole’s Auto-Tuned moaning, oftentimes just aggravating and barely listenable, and sometimes disguising some pretty weak, topic-less verses for a man who claims to be focused. “Want smoke? I’m a whole nicotine company”  is not the silliest bar on the album, but I’m almost convinced the song ends as abruptly as it does because Timbaland’s embarrassed that he helped produce such an underwhelming beat and not even someone praised as a modern great can save it from being worthless.
#15 – “p r i d e . i s . t h e . d e v i l” – J. Cole and Lil Baby
Produced by T-Minus
One of my favourite hip-hop releases of last year was Aminé’s Limbo, a diverse selection of tracks that ranged from conscious hip-hop about his ambitions and fears about growing up and raising children in a modern world as well as typical trap-rap flexing and R&B crooners about girl problems. All of this is smoothly stirred into a pot of personality that actually attempts to bridge a gap between older and newer generations of rappers rather than just claiming to. “Can’t Decide” is not one of my favourite tracks from that record – “Compensating” with Young Thug executes its ideas just that little bit better for me – but it’s still a fun, R&B-adjacent tune with insanely catchy hooks about Aminé’s relationships. So why did we need a J. Cole remix? This guy sucks the fun out of beats like a vacuum in a bouncy castle, as he sloppily whines in an almost emo-rap cadence over a cheaper West Coast slide he just can’t convincingly sell. Lyrically, Cole focuses on the idea of pride and how it corrupts someone’s morals, criticising the flashing of money and social isolation from the family... both of which seem like Cole’s M.O. at this point, right? Success amidst independence? Platinum without features? This time around, there is a feature however from Lil Baby, who much like Cole claims to be focused in this very focused whilst pick-and-choosing between random trains of thought in his typical frog-throat delivery. Hey, at least Lil Baby flows with less strain and unwarranted, desperate effort that Cole does, and ends up out-shining the primary artist entirely, even if he’s going to “pay silly bands to have sex on the jet”. ..What?
#13 – “m y . l i f e” – J. Cole, 21 Savage and Morray
Produced by WU10, J. Cole and Jake One
The first lines of this song are “Spiralling up just like a rich person’s staircase; no fly zone, please stay out of my airspace”. Cole, I thought pride was the devil! I understand that one can still acknowledge the flaws in their worldview whilst embracing it and engaging themselves in it – that’s really a lot of the point of rags-to-riches rap – but some subtlety or at least some explanation from someone who wants you to see him as focused, woke, hungry and a master of his craft, would have been nice, right? This is Morray’s first charting hit in the UK and I’m glad he’s here as he’s basically what differentiates this from the duo’s prior collaboration “a lot”, a song that not only banged harder but felt smoother and Hell, just more coherent, especially with some soulful production that this new collaboration glaringly rips off. Morray’s biggest hit is “Quicksand” but his mixtape Street Sermons is full of soulful and honest trap-rap that I’d absolutely recommend for gospel flavour on the surface and the lyrical detail behind the bravado being extensive and confidently delivered, especially standing out on his own with no features to speak of. He has the chorus on here and I’m surprised DaBaby doesn’t have the second verse so this could be a North Carolina anthem but we do have 21 Savage, who delivers his typical brand of cold-hearted (or rather no-hearted), stoic paranoia bars but at least that’s a personality. 21 Savage delivers a slick flow over this sample and spits the pretty simple yet profound bar of “I pray that my past ain’t ahead of me”, leading to probably the most enjoyable verse on the whole album. If you couldn’t tell, the new guys outshine the old guard so obviously with so little effort it’s kind of impressive on Cole’s part even. I’m glad this is the biggest hit from this album so far as not only is this one of the best tracks out of a slim selection but it’s big for both 21 and especially Morray, who I’m really rooting for against, say, a Rod Wave or Kevin Gates in terms of southern rap with a lot more soul and grit. Oh, and Cole, “know it’s on sight when I see you like I’m working at Squarespace”? Really? Again, it’s not the dumbest bar on the album.
#2 – “good 4 u” – Olivia Rodrigo
Produced by Alexander 23 and Dan Nigro
It’s pretty fitting to book-end a batch of new arrivals mostly consisting of hardcore gritty trap with two up-beat alternative rock tracks, and I’ll say I prefer this to Lovejoy mostly because, well, like I said with “Seeing Green”, my biases will always be on full and honest display, and as someone who’s a sucker for pop-punk of all eras, especially if it’s a female-fronted band with some youthful, raspy vocals, this will obviously hit for me. Throughout Sour, I found it hard to buy into the teenage melodrama due to Dan Nigro’s production often sounding too clean for its own sake, never allowing the guitars to really crash into some lo-fi, distorted noise like they seem to want to do on tracks like this, “deja vu” and especially the opener, “traitor”. Sadly, that cuts the chances of radio airplay by a ton more than it should, so we end up with mixing that slides off Rodrigo’s reverb-drenched vocals too smoothly, creating a rather formulaic album, unfortunate for its sheer excess of promise. With that said, this is one of my favourite tracks off of the album, if only for that funky bassline and some of Nigro’s most interesting stylistic and production choices, particularly in the drumming, which sounds as organic as possible for something that was programmed by him and Alexander 23. The sarcasm-laced post-break-up kiss-off is already not unfamiliar territory for Olivia Rodrigo and neither was it for Avril Lavigne, which this track tends to sound almost like an imitation of, down to the inconsistently PG-13 image as “screw you” is delivered with as much conviction as the actual F-bomb in the same verse. Regardless of how much it wants to consistently kill its own momentum, this janky songwriting actually reminds me of early Paramore, much of which holds a special place in my heart, so whilst Hayley Williams has been off doing her solo work – and Paramore seem to have moved on from this kind of bitter, petty pop rock anyway – this quenches that thirst pretty effectively.
Conclusion
Olivia Rodrigo bags the Honourable Mention for “good 4 u” as well as it’s one of two songs debuting this week I think are pretty damn special, the other one being “Seeing Green” by Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne and Drake as it grabs Best of the Week. For the worst, I mean, pick your J. Cole-flavoured poison but personally I’d say “a m a r i” can be crowned Worst of the Week with a Dishonourable Mention to... great, I don’t want to seem like I hate J. Cole but nothing else here is even as bad as his Lil Baby collaboration “p r i d e . i s . t h e . d e v i l”. Here’s this week’s top 10:
Tumblr media
Expect two more of those spaces filled up by Olivia Rodrigo next week as whilst we may not get any new entries from her the album will have an impact regardless on the chart. Otherwise, I guess we’ll have to wait and see with how a Queen-sampling BTS song wrecks the chart – probably will give both Olivia and “Body” some #1 competition – as well as new songs from Little Mix, Lana Del Rey, Polo G and Lil Nas X popping up not too far behind it. It should be just as busy next week, folks, so strap in, I suppose. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you then!

Final Blog Post
Inspiration and Ideation
Some of my fondest childhood memories come from the many times my mom blasted funk music in the car. Since my mom grew up in Los Angeles in the late 70s and early 80s, p-funk and soul were some of the main things she was listening to, so naturally she shared her love for them with me and my brother. One of our all-time favorites to listen to in the car was “Computer Love” by Zapp, one of west coast hip-hop’s greatest influences, and in my unbiased opinion, the greatest funk band of all time. The best part about listening to “Computer Love” was trying to impersonate Roger Troutman’s voice on his talk box. As a kid this sound was one of the coolest things I had ever heard, and it wasn’t until some music classes in high school and college that I was introduced to the talk box and the vocoder in real life.
In my current music class, Sonic Arts and Crafts, my professor introduced us to making controllers. In one of the classes he showed us the O-bow controller. This controller senses the movements of a bow for string instruments, while using a midi keyboard controller to input pitch into a DAW. The only way I could make sense of this controller was by comparing it to a vocoder. After thinking this through, I suddenly had the idea to make a vocoder for my final project. I asked my professor how I could go about making a vocoder, and he said I could make one in Max, but it would be very difficult. I tried looking up Max vocoder tutorials, but as he said, it was super challenging and really far out of my comfort zone. Afterwards, I decided I would make a talk box, as it was my favorite funk artist’s instrument of choice, and looked like so much fun to make and play. Either way I wanted to use something that worked with voice, as I am not really well-versed with any other instrument than a keyboard, which I really only know how to use functionally.
The Process:
After consulting my professor, I bought a Pyle compression driver speaker to make my talk box. Due to a misread, I bought some vinyl tube with an ID of 3/8 of an inch when I went home over break. When my compression driver came in the mail at school, I saw that the vinyl tube would definitely not fit the compression driver, as it required 1-3/8” not 3/8” ID. I called up the local Lowes only to find out that they wouldn’t have the exact size tubing, but that we could use some other connectors for proper sizing. This sounded like an okay idea. When I got to class that same day, I consulted my professor once again, and found out that my compression driver required a specific amplifier board that probably wouldn’t mail to me in time for my presentation. From that point, we decided it would be best to start from the beginning and make a DIY talk box from more common household supplies. This approach was probably more feasible, and allowed much less room for error, as I have had soldering troubles when working with amps before.
For my DIY talk box, I would have to get a toilet plunger, a speaker, some vinyl tube (which I already had from my first attempt), and a guitar cable. After going toilet plunger shopping, I went in for office hours and everything I had been worrying about fell perfectly into place. My professor gave me a speaker that fit just perfectly into the toilet plunger caddy, and perfectly under the plunger. First, I unscrewed the handle from the plunger, so that I could loop the vinyl tube through to the inside of the plunger. I cut a hole where the plunger handle used to be so the tube could go through. I secured the tube with hot glue. I then hot glued the speaker to the plunger. I also soldered a guitar cable to the speaker. From there I drilled a hole in the plunger caddy so that the guitar cable could run from out of the talk box into another amplifier. Afterwards, I glued the caddy to the bottom of the speaker and looped the guitar cable through the hole. And voila, I had a working talk box! Upon completion of my talk box, I tested it for myself with the synthesizer I made earlier in the year, and everything sounded really cool and groovy! One thing I did find was that much of my sound wasn’t getting through the tube, so my professor advised me to put my talk box in a much larger box and stuff the larger box with some type of material that would muffle the sound leaving the plunger. This would keep the sound pushing through the plunger to the tube instead of outwards. My professor also gave me a pretty powerful amp to connect my talk box to, and also another ¼” to 1/8” cable that could go from the amp to my computer or phone. Later when I got home I found a box and a big blanket and wrapped my talk box in there, and sure enough everything sounded pretty good!
How does it all work:
The plunger and speaker are sealed together are air-tight so that none of the sound escapes the speaker. The amp acts as a power source to my talkbox as well as a connection between my talkbox and my computer. Finally, I work to filter the sounds from my computer or synth with my mouth and the tube.
Performance:
Although I tried my talk box with my synth from earlier in the year, I really wanted to work on a solid performance, where I could control pitch more, and maybe even play a song. One talk box performance that I had been meditating on for some weeks was Stevie Wonder’s cover of “Close to You” by the Carpenters on The David Frost Show (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnR19INlXV8 ). After looking up piano tutorials and trying to get some chords down, I found out that I wasn’t Stevie Wonder on the keys. I also had T-Pain expectations of myself when it came to mouthing words on the talk box. I still wanted to try some synths from Fruity Loops and improvise, but I concluded that I would be better off finding a Moog sample on Youtube. Although for my first performance I did mouth some words over Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” which was pretty fun. I also found that it was super helpful to use a mic to pick up words because the whole time I was practicing without one.
Overall, this experience was so exciting! I will continue to practice mouthing the talk box as well as playing the keys. I may even bedazzle or paint my toilet plunger, so it looks as good as it sounds.
I am also so so grateful to have taken this class at UVA! Thanks so much!

Death of a Bachelor Concert Review
I recently went to see Panic! at the Disco on the Death of a Bachelor Tour. After buying these tickets in September, I had been waiting and waiting for March to arrive. I can in no way say that I was disappointed with the concert. Even with frontman Brendon Urie being the only man left in the band, you still get an amazing set and an amazing experience.
Every great show needs great openers to match. The role of an opening act is to hype up the crowd and get them excited for the main act, and it’s safe to say, that Panic! picked some pretty great openers. Going into it, I knew pretty much all of the songs off of Saint Mote’s album and was really excited to hear them preform live. I only knew two Misterwives songs, (Same Drugs, and Reflections) and was excited to hear more of their music. I was late to the show and missed almost all of Saint Motel’s set, but I could tell from the one and a half songs that I heard that they were  just as amazing if not more amazing live as they were on the album.
Misterwives was incredible. Their lead singer has an incredible vocal range and could hit the notes that were on the album, unlike some singers who choose to go lower during live performances as their higher notes are edited in. They kept their performance fun and upbeat. Their set had really cool features like the fact that they had light up pedestals that they stood on. Their cool setlist and fun lighting displays were not the only things that made this set memorable. Towards the end of their set, three of the band members were doing a choreographed drum solo on what looked like old metal barrels. After Misterwives, it was clear to see that the myself and the crowd were most definitely hyped. In between the opening acts and Panic!, a dance battle even broke out across the arena to the Miley Cyrus song, Wrecking Ball.
Once the countdown started on the big screen signaling that there was one minute until the show started, there was a buzz in the air and you could feel the excitement of everyone in the crowd waiting for Brendon to hit the stage. With ten seconds left, you could heart the crowd chanting and counting down with the clock. Ten…nine…eight… I was practically shaking with excitement waiting to finally see the band that I had loved for so long live. Three…two…one streamers burst through the air as Brendon took the stage and Don’t Threaten Me With a Good Time began to play.
As far as concerts go, I thought that the Panic! at the Disco setlist was a fairly good one. There was a nice mixture of new and old songs, and I knew all of the songs that were played. I loved that Brendon switched sides of the arena and came to the back to play a song as he was literally right in front of me. I have always preferred the piano version of This is Gospel and my dream came true when I heard it live. Not only was the song beautiful, but the performance of it was amazing. The stand the piano was on rose from the ground and was pretty much eye level to me and spun around, as lights shown down on Urie and snow like confetti fell from the sky. It was honestly one of the most beautiful things that I have ever witnessed at a concert.
Another thing that made this concert special was the fan project. Now if you don’t know what a fan project is, it is basically a group of fans who come up with a way to show the artist their love and appreciation for them. The most common fan project is usually in the form of hearts that are hand cut and written on by the people running the project. In this case, mine said “shine your flash light through during Girls/Girls/Boys. These hearts are usually either all one color, or the colors of the rainbow showing support to the pride movement. My heart was purple and my friend had a green one and during that song, the majority of the audience was lit up with all of the colors of the rainbow. Every time I go to a concert with a successful fan project like that, I always leave feeling more satisfied like I was a part of something bigger than myself. It always makes it more special when the artist actually acknowledges your fan project like Brendon Urie did for this show.
There weren’t many things about the show that I would change, but if I had to pick something, I would have to say the amount of covers. Now call me uncultured, but I didn’t know the words to the Billie Joel song that was played and I honestly don’t know the words to 24k Magic either, because that’s just not the type of music that I’m into (although I didn’t mind watching Brendon working it on those drums either). It was a given, and a blessing for that matter, that Brendon decided to do his amazing cover of Bohemian Rhapsody. However when I go to a concert unless I’m seeing a cover band, I really only want to hear one song, maybe two max that aren’t actually by the artist themselves.
I don’t know how, but Brendon’s voice sounds even better live than it does on the album. His vocal range is phenomenal and he can hit notes higher than those on the album. The one thing I would say about him however, is that he doesn’t spend a lot of time interacting with the crowd. I always feel more connected with an artist when they preform if they talk in between songs or joke around with the fans. However other than walking through the crowd during Death of a Bachelor and one speech about pride and changing the world after Girls/Girls/Boys, Urie didn’t really interact or talk with the crowd any. I love hearing artists introductions and explanations for songs during the set but I didn’t really get that here. That being said, the overall experience of the show overpowered the need for any conversation on Urie’s part.
Overall, I thought Brendon had amazing stage presence and never failed to captivate the audience. If you still can, I strongly suggest buying tickets to The Death of a Bachelor tour because you won’t regret it. Between the amazing set list, and the captivating special effects, I don’t think you will regret going to see Panic! at the Disco but you will regret missing out on this amazing opportunity. Overall, I would have to rate this a 8/10 as far as concerts go! Be sure to checkout my YouTube channel lifeofmolllie to see my concert blog for Panic! at the Disco.
