I can choose not to write for something if it makes me uncomfortable or I simply don't like it. No hard feelings but I want to enjoy what I'm writing.

Please don't spam my inbox, send up to 3 asks at a time.

I have a limit of 5 characters per request, but I will make exceptions if it's a group that has a little bit more. For example, if you were to make a request for the protagonists of the Quintessential Quintuplets. 6 is over the limit, but I don't want to separate them.

Please dont just write a request that says "do this", it's a bit rude in my opinion and doesn't give me much to work with.

I don't do crossovers. I like to keep the series isolated from each other. But if it's in the same universe I don't mind. On that note, only request one series per ask.

This is a self insert blog, so I won't do ships. But I will write for Poly relationships if the reader is involved.

You can request any character, but if need be I will age them up or down as to not... make it weird? I don't know how to describe it, but I will take a few liberties to think about the future or the past of some characters for that. You can also request characters that aren't "human" and I will make a gijinka version of them to write for.

I don't write for real world people or real life events. Writing for living breathing people sounds weird to me and this blog is for fantasies.

If you want to request anonymously, you don't have to identify yourself. I would appreciate it, but you don't have to.

I like a lot of different AUs! So feel free to describe things you would like changed on the world of a series. Some AUs I like are modern AU, Self aware AU, fantasy AU, and Omegaverse.

The reader will be refered to as they/them to be more inclusive unless you request it to be otherwise.

If you desire, I can Genderbend characters or swap their roles. Those are always amazing AUs in my opinion.

I like writing for submissive readers since I enjoy that more, so I don't like writing for powerful or dominant readers most of the time.

You can ask any sort of question about what I will write or not and even suggest things if you feel so inclined.

Verse 1

Line 1: The first season of a remake of Fruits Basket aired this year to critical and popular acclaim. Based on the manga by Natsuki Takaya, this version featured more input by the mangaka and replaces the older series, which was the subject of mixed feelings from manga fans. Part two will premiere in 2020. You can currently stream season one on Crunchyroll. We also wrote a number of articles about the remake.

Line 2: Haru is a stray cat that is adopted by writer Subaru Mikazuki in the anime, My Roommate is a Cat. Introverted by nature to the point of being a shut-in, and having lost both of his parents years earlier, Subaru has no idea how to care for a cat. Meanwhile, Haru has also led a difficult life and finds Subaru hard to deal with. However, they learn to mutually care for each other and help one another grow. You can currently stream this anime on Crunchyroll.

Line 3: Set against the backdrop of the Viking invasion of England near the turn of the 2nd millennium, Vinland Saga is a tale about Thorfinn, who seeks revenge after a violent attack that changes his and his family’s life. As he grows and becomes part of the Viking incursion, Thorfinn also becomes involved with Canute, a Viking prince. Vinland Saga is streaming on Amazon Prime.

Verse 2

Line 1: One Punch Man and its super-powered up hero, Saitama, returned this year in a much-anticipated season two. Early in the season, he becomes friends with King, a highly-ranked hero but one who is actually fraudulent. Still, the two get along well and play video games frequently—King always wins against Saitama, who is a terrible gamer. Season two of One Punch Man can be streamed on Hulu.

Line 2: Perhaps the best harem of series of the year was The Quintessential Quintuplets, which features the cantankerous Futaro, who is harangued into tutoring the less-than-academically-stellar Nakano sisters. Miku is the first of the five to take an active romantic interest in Futaro. Relatively quiet, Miku is also sharp-tongued, earnest, and most known for her trademark headphones. Line 3: The third and final volume of Star Wars: Lost Stars, and officially licensed Star Wars manga, was recently released. We reviewed the series, which you can purchase on Amazon.

Chorus 1

Line 1: Muzan is the antagonist of Demon Slayer, a vicious demon whose thirst for violence and everlasting existence leads to frequent death and tragedy. Demon Slayer can be streamed on Crunchyroll. More on Demon Slayer to follow.

Line 2: The Promised Neverland begins with a bang, as Emma and Norman discover in episode one that instead of being adopted, as inferred, the tiny and cute child, Conny, has been killed and will be served as a meal to demons. Verse 3

Line 1: Kaguya-sama: Love is War follows two student council officers / rivals who pretend to dislike each other though the opposite is true; the blushing is frequent and heavy, including that for the title character. But the most popular character from the series is another officer not involved in the romance, the radomly hilarious Chika, whose dance has become much imitated and memed. Kaguya-sama can be streamed on Crunchyroll.

Line 2: Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl, the movie following up on the similarly titled Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Sempai series, was an emotional ride for the audience. The film revealed significant backstory details as it focused particularly on the mystery behind one character’s appearances and disappearance, while putting a favorite one in peril. We were so excited that we did not one, but two reviews of the film.

Line 3: As mentioned earlier, The Promised Neverland, the first season of which takes place largely at the Grace Field House, is an exhilarating and at times terrifying ride, featuring a cast of young characters who are being farmed as food. Spoilers ahead for the anime: The kids make an escape, which includes sliding down strings to cross over a large chasm in one of the most climactic scenes of the season. We blogged on the show episodically from both a manga reader’s (spoiler) perspective and that of one who hadn’t read the manga (non-spoiler). You can watch the series on Crunchyroll.

Verse 4

Line 1: Perhaps the most popular new series this year was Demon Slayer. The main character, Tanjirou, finds that his family has been viciously killed by a demon while he was away, with only his sister, Nezuko, surviving, but transformed into a demon herself. As he seeks to cure her, Tanjirou becomes part of the demon slayer corps, and in episode 19, his power emerges dramatically in a scene so beautifully animated by Ufotable and so full of emotion that it became and remains a highly-discussed moment. Our podcasters talked about it, too.

Line 2: Chihaya is the protagonist of Chihayafuru, an anime about the world of competitive karuta, a Japanese card game based on memorization and speed. The series returned with a third season six year after season two, and the genre-crossing show remained as beautiful as ever; the same could be said of its main character, who from a distance seems like an untouchable beauty (though she’s more of the absent-minded type in person). Chihayafuru can be streamed on Crunchyroll.

Line 3: After more than a decade in development hell, James Cameron’s adaptation of the Battle Angel Alita manga (titled Alita: Battle Angel for the film) hit the big screen early in 2018 with a different director at hand (Robert Rodriguez took the reigns while Cameron produced) and to mostly positive reviews from the anime community (though our review was more muted), as well as fair box office returns. Alita also kills it because, well, she slices bad guys up.

Chorus 2

Line 1: In season four of My Hero Academia, the new villain Overhaul is brought in, as well as Eri, the young girl he is victimizing and taking advantage of for his diabolical schemes. My Hero Academia can be streamed on Crunchyroll.

Line 2: Muzan may get all the attention, but the most vile villain of the year may be a woman (Minor spoilers ahead for Babylon). Magase, a mesmerizing woman at the center of a mysterious and deadly conspiracy, reveals her true colors during the midpoint of the season in one of the most horrific scenes in recent memory. Meanwhile, the show took a break after this, leaving the audience broken while waiting for new episodes to begin airing again a couple of weeks from now. Winter Anime 2019 Part 3: High on Concept

If you wait long enough, you’ll find something good to say.

Doukyonin wa Hiza, Tokidoki, Atama no Ue / My Roommate is a Cat

What: Misanthropic mystery author picks up tough stray cat, both get healed.

✅ The cat acts like a cat, the misanthrope acts like a misanthrope.

✅ The approach of telling the same simple story from the perspective of two characters that can’t really communicate effectively is interesting.

✅ This is very basic, but it works. I like both characters, and it's generally inoffensive. Pretty much Barakamon with less of a focus on telling you exactly what to feel. Might watch more of this.

❌ I see we’re now at the point where shows get localized titles that sound like lazy translations of bland Japanese names even when the Japanese title is not that bland to begin with. Lovely.

Dimension High School

What: A bunch of kids press XXX and YYY and are sucked. Wooow.

✅✅ The wraparound segments look extremely realistic. If there was more lensflares and shots of feet I’d almost say someone has finally beaten KyoAni in making anime look like a cheap, egregiously overacted J-Drama.

❌❌ Sadly, the puzzle dimension they end up in just looks like homemade MMD animation, because it is. I mean, at least it’s mocapped, but apparently with a Kinect.

❌❌ E.g., they make jokes about clipping and they kinda have to because everything clips into everything else all the time.

❌❌ Did I mention that all they actually do is solve lame puzzles and fail to be funny about it? It’s really getting to the levels of the dreaded “barely animated voice actor improv podcast” at these points.

♎ Suwabe’s in it, and that’s never an outright bad thing. He’s voicing the quizmaster, in the process proving he’d do anything for a paycheck. I wonder if he has a fiverr acocunt.

Domestic na Kanojo

What: Highschooler loses virginity to one night stand, finds out that it was the sister of the teacher he has a crush on. Incidentally, the mother of both also just married his father. Zany!

✅ This is presented like a low-key, slow drama, and it’s not even bad at that. Some good directing going on here, at least in the beginning.

❌❌ Really just too bad that it’s impossible to take seriously with a setup as contrived as this, not to mention taking it as seriously as it apparently wants to be taken. It’s also not exactly original.

❌ I’m not gonna say that sketchy relationships can’t work (it worked fine for KoiAme, for example), but embedding your suddenly also incestuous pupil-teacher affair in the setting of a harem comedy, complete with other sister walking in on attempted drunk blackout kiss, is not giving me confidence that this has the chops to pull it off.

❌❌ The show this reminds me the most of is Love and Lies, and that’s a real bad calling card to have.

Girly Air Force

What: Girl-shaped fighter jets fall in love with a dude.

❌❌ It’s just another military-hardware-is-cute-girls-actually show in the vein of Strike Witches, the kind where they think that having a few plane CG models is already thrilling content.

❌❌ But then it doesn’t even turn out to be that in practice, because most of the episode is taken up by lame “worldbuilding” (i.e., coming up with excuses for why your fanservice show has to be the way it is) and trying to make your bland harem lead interesting, which is a futile endeavour.

❌ The most interesting part is still the CG dogfighting, such as it is. It’s not great either. Also, girly planes are pink.

♎ Honestly got a laugh out of them randomly picking a Gripen as heroine unit in addition to actual JSADF hardware, because that’s a sleek-looking plane. The biggest prank the JSADF ever pulled on the otaku industry is buying the chubby F-35, which is nowhere to be seen here.

Go-toubun no Hanayome / The Quintessential Quintuplets

What: Empoverished highschooler is hired as a tutor for some rich quintuplets with large breasts.

❌ This is a blatant harem setup that would make a 2003 bishoujo VN blush.

✅ However, in practice it’s much better than it sounds. It knows it’s a wacky romcom with a dumb premise and it does not pretend otherwise.

✅ So it’s lighthearted, but it’s also surprisingly classy. In fact, it’s classier than Domestic no Kanojo, which is a show that’s actually trying to look respectable and failing.

✅ The relationships are also very feisty, with an energy that a comedy needs. There’s a lot of sass to go around here. Probably the best of these I’ve seen in a while, so I’ll give it three eps.

Kemurikusa

What: After getting pulled off the sequel, the Kemono Friends crew made their own version. Presumably there are blackjack and hookers in this show’s future.

❌ If you are a fan of KF’s “charms”, fear not, you would not be able to tell these people made another anime before. It's still total amateur hour.

❌❌ It’s not even the “looks”, though those certainly are not a highlight. The design is okay and the animation is bad, but I’m not incapable of enjoying shows with bad animation. What really kills it is the editing. I usually don’t comment on editing because that’s almost always competent and only very rarely great, but Kemurikusa has uniquely lazy and badly timed editing. Every shot being seconds longer than it needs to be is already an annoyance in low-key dialog scenes, but the alleged action is laughable and allows you a long, unblinking stare at every frame of bad animation. I really do wonder why they even bother with it when it’s so terrible.

✅ The setting seems alright, even though it’s just a reskinned Kemono Friends. At least it’s not gijinka nonsense this time (which makes one wonder where the gimmick characters are supposed to come from, but I digress), and it’s more upfront about what it actually is too. I’d call it mildly intriguing.

❌ I don’t mind mystery and certainly prefer it to exposition bombs, but instead of that this episode quickly establishes the most basic facts... and then repeats them over and over and over some more. Combined with non-editing, this makes for horrible pacing.

♎ I had no opinion on KF’s longer-term qualities, because the first episode was so boring I never got any further. I won’t have an opinion on this show’s long-term qualities for the same reason.

Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka

What: Magical girls are tragic, shoot gun’s.

❌❌ Yo bro, what if magical girls but dark? Surely such a thing has never been attempted.

❌ The particular source of grim here is that these girls are war vets and fight with semi-realistic weaponry, so there’s a fair bit of the ol’ milwank in this one as well.

❌ The best part of the entire show is that the enemies they originally fought looked like cute teddy bears. Of course, this is dropped in favor of just slicing and dicing some random terrorists in the main narrative. I guess “dark magical girl” is still too outlandish a concept, gotta go with ripping off The Punisher again.

❌ The characters so far are nothing special, you got your PTSD Rambo and the generically cute tomodachis she swears to protect. Such contrast!

❌❌ If you must make these 80s action movies with some otaku gimmick pasted on top, would you mind making the action look good at least? Because I don’t care how many gallons of blood you paint in your dramatic but conspicuously non-moving pans.

Meiji Tokyo Renka

What: Spiritually sensitive lonelygirl gets kitsuned to the Meiji era, which is full of delicious beef and some handsome men too I guess.

✅ This isn’t an outright comedy, but it goes all in on everyone’s fabulosity level to a degree that it’s really already three quarters to Dame x Prince.

✅ Similarly, the lead is not quite as unimpressed with these hams as Ani was, but she certainly has a lot more interest in roast beef than in these guys always trying to pull her into sparkly chin-holding poses &c.

✅ Meiji Tokyo Renka doesn’t seem to be anything special, but it gets the tone right and is expressive enough to not become boring.

♎ While certainly watchable right now, with these there’s always the chance that it decides to launch into real drama in the long run, which in turn almost always goes wrong.

Yakusoku no Neverland / The Promised Neverland

What: An orphanage’s happy daily life gets upended by the realisation that they’re just pizza rolls for some demonic entities.

✅ I watched this right after Kemurikusa and let me tell you, it sure helps if you’ve got professionals on the team. This is a highly competent show as far as cinematography and editing is concerned. While there isn’t any reason to go all out on the action sakuga, this show looks real good.

❌ I’m not feeling the character design, to be specific I think everyone’s chin is too big. This sounds like a real assholy nitpick, but be aware that this will impact around 90% of the time you watch this.

✅ The premise is workable for a shounen manga, even if hardly original (remember Owari no Seraph?) At least it’s not kids with superpowers spamming beams at each other while discussing the nature of heroism, and seems to be going for a more mindgames-based approach in the vein of Death Note. The characters are just barely good enough so far. In the end it’s not so much the premise, but how well the production values are able to sell it. And that’s what Neverland is good at.

❌ It’s specifically a Weekly Shounen Jump manga, and that is huge red flag. Sure enough, while the visuals and mood deliver, the dialog writing justifiably assumes the reader is a moron. Almost every line in this is either straight universe exposition or someone reading someone else’s character sheet back to them. It’s insane and not even necessary because their actions establish all of this just fine, but hey, WSJ readers amirite?

❌ Also, since it’s a successful WSJ property, don’t expect an ending or be prepared to watch this show for years. Most likely both.

♎ This seems like it could be entertaining once the exposition is out of the way and the real meat of the narrative starts. Then again, at that point pacing would come into play, which is yet another achilles heel of WSJ-style shounen manga. Against my better judgement, I’ll probably have a look how this develops, but I don’t expect much.

Manga the Week of 4/22/20

SEAN: Yes, there’s still manga. May is the apocalypse, April is packed.

Ghost Ship gives us a 2nd Saki the Succubus Hungers Tonight and the 10th Yokai Girls.

No debuts, for once, for J-Novel Club, but we do get Ascendance of a Bookworm 6, The Combat Baker and Automaton Waitress 5, Isekai Rebuilding Project 2, Kobold King 2, and Der Werwolf 7.

Kodansha’s print debut is Perfect World, which had a digital release a while back. I enjoyed the first volume, but never did follow up on it. I should do that.

MICHELLE: Same here. It’s a tough series to marathon. Keeping pace with the print release should be easier than catching up on all the extant digital volumes.

ASH: I’ve been waiting for this one to come out in print!

SEAN: Also in print: Cardcaptor Sakura Collector’s Edition 4, Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card 7, Fire Force 18, and Sailor Moon Eternal Edition 8.

ASH: The collector’s edition of Cardcaptor Sakura is pretty.

MELINDA: I haven’t been picking up the new edition, but it’s sooooo tempting. It’s such a pretty manga. And Dark Horse’s mid-release shift in trim sizes damaged the prettiness of the last edition for me. (Yes, I still have not forgiven them for that.)

SEAN: The digital debut is Dolly Kill Kill, which ran on the Mangabox App back in the day. A young man’s life is destroyed by monsters that look like mascot costumes. Can he get back what he lost? For fans of weird horror.

There’s also GE: Good Ending 4, I’ll Win You Over Sempai! 3, Kakushigoto 2, The Quintessential Quintuplets 12, Saint Young Men 5, and Shojo FIGHT! 10.

MICHELLE: I have no idea how I got four volumes behind on Shojo FIGHT!, but it has somehow happened! Not that I mind having a decent chunk to devout at once.

SEAN: Seven Seas has the 2nd Bloom Into You light novel (digitally), The Ideal Sponger Life 5, If It’s for My Daughter I’d Even Defeat a Demon Lord 5 (manga version), My Monster Secret 20, and Shomin Sample 12.

Vertical has an 8th Flying Witch, a highly underrated series.

Viz has two debuts. The Art of Junji Ito is what it sounds like, and will probably not give TOO many nightmares.

SEAN: The other debut is Blue Flag, a title with SO much buzz and hype I worry it can’t live up to it. A Shonen Jump + series, it is apparently about sweet, painful and heartrending days.

MICHELLE: I am soooooo excited for this.

SEAN: Also from Viz: Golden Kamuy 15, Tokyo Ghoul: re 16, and Ultraman 13.

ASH: Here for Golden Kamuy (though I’ve enjoyed some of the earlier volumes more than some of the later ones).

ANNA: Golden Kamuy is one of those series I keep meaning to read but there is so much manga!

SEAN: Yen On split its main April release schedule across two weeks: this is the first. We get Accel World 21, Baccano! 13, Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki 3, Combatants Will Be Dispatched! 3, and Sword Art Online 19.

The manga debut has a light novel coming out in June. I’m a Behemoth, an S-Ranked Monster, but Mistaken for a Cat, I Live as an Elf Girl’s Pet (S-Rank Monster no Behemoth Dakedo, Neko to Machigawarete Erufu Musume no Kishi (Pet) Toshite Kurashitemasu) is one of THOSE series. A reincarnated as a powerful beast series, with added elf, this runs in Hakusensha’s Young Animal, so expect boobs.

MELINDA: I know every publisher has a niche, but Yen Press… I’m begging for more stuff like Silver Spoon. With a few exceptions, I’ll admit they’ve kind of lost me as a reader. Our tastes just don’t line up anymore.

MICHELLE: I’m still in it for Nozaki-kun and Yowamushi Pedal, but I’m close to being in the same boat. I’m boat-adjacent. I also miss manhwa.

MELINDA: Me too, Michelle, ME TOO.

SEAN: I have good news for you about the week after next, then, Melinda…

MELINDA: YESSSSSSSS.

SEAN: The rest? A Certain Magical Index’s 21st manga volume, Chio’s School Road 8, Gabriel Dropout 8, Kaiju Girl Caramelize 3, Plunderer 4, Reborn as a Polar Bear 3, Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro Side Story (yay!), Teasing Master Takagi-san 8 (also yay!), Val x Love 8, and A Witch’s Printing Office 2.

ASH: I finally picked up the first volume of A Witch’s Printing Office… I should probably get around to actually reading it.
