Art Event 4: Different Genres
Hello there!
This is an informal, for-fun art event, meant for any person who enjoys making art. This time, it's a two-parter: both a trade, and just a casual event for those who just wish to create art for themselves. It's a pressure-free event! No need to create a big masterpiece--just something you or others would happily enjoy.
The theme this time around is "Different Genres." You can choose any character(s) from any media(s) and put them into a different universe entirely. Make a clone a mermaid! Toss Thrawn into a K-drama! Hondo Ohnaka could sail the seas in the Golden Era of Piracy! Anakin Skywalker could be a Warrior cat! Whatever genre you can dream up, they could be in.
Types of art welcome:
Drawings (digital or scanned traditional)
Short comics
Short animation
Photo edits
Video edits (music or otherwise)
Music creation
Moodboards/photo collages
Quotes-and-photo collages
Other (contact moderator ASAP)
Dates to adhere to:
Deadline to join the trade: February 10th (There is no sign-up or deadline for free-posting individuals)
Dates to post: March 30th-31st
Rules:
For the trade: Joining requires creating art. To recieve art, you must create art! Simple as that. Many types of art are allowed (see above), and all can be adapted to how you wish to conceive yours.
You don't have to be "great" at any art to join! This is an informal event with no level restrictions. The important thing is that your art absolutely must have effort. For example, a moodboard should be cohesive, and it should contain enough photos that it could be worthy of giving as a gift. Make sure you are satisfied with what you are giving out (to your abilities levels, of course--don't expect the Star Wars Mona Lisa if you aren't to par with DaVinci's skills!).
This is an anonymous event. You will know who they are creating art for, but you will not know who you are recieving from! Until posting dates, please keep your art to yourself (or a trusted non-participating friend). In the words of Gandalf the Grey: Keep it secret; keep it safe.
Art should be created for your giftee based on things/characters/ideas they enjoy. Do a bit of "pseudo-stalking" (not real stalking) of their tags. See what the person enjoys, both in terms of mediums and concepts. If they have clone trooper OC's, base something off those guys! If they are a big Ezra Bridger fan, see what types of AUs they enjoy! If the concept of the Force makes them go wild, include that in your art! If you are at a loss for ideas, send an anon message to the person to see what they are interested in OR contact the moderator.
Please sign up only ONCE. You will recieve art from only ONE artist. The artist may wish to give you more than one piece of art, but it will only be from THAT artist alone. If you wish to make more art for someone else, arrange that on your own time, please!
If you need to drop out, that is okay! Things happen. You are able to drop out at any time. Please contact the moderator ASAP if you need to drop. Please understand that the other artists are putting their own time and effort into their pieces. The artist gifting their time and effort to you is no longer obligated to do so anymore. If you drop out, they are completely allowed to drop, too.
Important note: All skin tones and disabilities must be accurately portrayed. No skin tone should be lighter than the actor/character's actual skin colour. Disabilities must be depicted correctly. If not, you will be dropped. The same goes for respecting canon cultures. Please refrain from depicting Children of the Watch or Tuskens without their garments, unless the scenario is explicitly of situations where the removal of clothing/armour/helms is acceptable. Please cover the heads of Twi'lek women, and that of Mirialans. These requests are not only personal wishes of the moderators, but also just basic decency. Do your research portraying someone different than you. Do not fall prey to harmful tropes. This hurts others..
IF YOU HAVE ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS, PLEASE DM THE MODERATOR. You may do so here, or at @engagemythrusters or @darlin-djarin.
Sign Up Form for Trade Here
Thanks, all!

Aziraphale & Shostakovich
The moment in the record shop when Aziraphale said he was picking up a Shostakovich record I had So Many Thoughts.
The symphony he's listening to is Symphony No.5 in D Minor, Op. 47, composed in 1937 and premiered in Leningrad to a thirty+ minute long standing ovation. Prior to this piece, Dimitri S. spent many nights sleeping in the hallway outside of his apartment so that his family wouldn't see if the government police in charge of enforcing Stalin's brutal rule came for him in the middle of the night. His last pieces had been received harshly by critics and called unpatriotic, which was just about the worst thing a composer living during The Great Terror (1936-1938) could do. Those who were not loyal to the regime and explicitly portrayed it in their art were branded as traitors and sent to gulags or were straight up executed.
The San Francisco Symphony describes the 5th symphony as "the story of a fall from grace and redemption.". Shostakovitch has gone from being a golden example to being eyed as a traitor almost overnight, the 5th Symphony becoming his redemption back into good graces.
So basically Dimitri S. was a man with contrasting ideologies to the powers that be, so to say, who was living under the threat of death, torture, or excommunication from his homeland. Haha, so weird that Aziraphale would want to listen to his music specifically.
(If you've never listened to Symphony No. 5, I highly encourage you to go listen!)
To set the scene-
From The Houston Symphony's 2018 Fighting the Barbarian Artist article on Symph. 5:
"In January 1934, Dmitri Shostakovich scored one of the biggest triumphs of his career with the premiere of Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, a work official critics hailed as the first great Soviet opera. Based on a nineteenth-century novella by Leskov, it follows the misadventures of Katerina, the illiterate wife of a well-to-do country merchant who is driven to murder in order to be with her handsome but unworthy lover, the laborer Sergei. By turns satirical and tragic, Lady Macbeth explored themes of oppression with a potent combination of sex, violence and some truly beautiful music that played to full houses for two years. Then on January 26, 1936, Stalin went to see it. Two days later, on page 3 of Pravda (“Truth”—the newspaper that continues to serve as the official mouthpiece of the Russian Communist Party to this day), Shostakovich found an anonymous review of Lady Macbeth headlined “Muddle Instead of Music.” One representative quote declared that the opera “tickles the perverted tastes of the bourgeoisie with its fidgety, screaming, neurotic music…”" ...
There is debate about if Stalin himself wrote the review to make a point, or if he just signed off on it being printed. It's also unclear if Shostakovitch was being targeted specifically, or just because of his notoriety to prove that no matter how big a name you are you're not safe if you don't fall in line, or if he was just being used as a pawn in the ongoing power struggles of the day.
Either way, he was very aware that he was in danger. A friend of Stalin's was vanished when he wrote to Stalin in defense of Shostakovitch's work after the fateful review.
The 5th was a result of Dimitri knowing he needed to get back into good graces, so he had to give them something that they wanted. Or at least something that sounded like what they wanted.
Symphony No. 5 is very sneaky in how it subverts the expectations and requirements of Stalin's Russia.
For one, it's form- a symphony is a very structured form and very Western, popularized by Beethoven and co. It's also instrumental, which allowed Shostakovitch to hide a lot of references, subversions, and musical sarcasm/critiques without the untrained critics and government officials being any the wiser.
D minor, the main tonality of the symphony, has been described by various music theorists about what kind of emotional experience it portrays. John Mattheson in 1713 described it as "Serious, Pious, Ruminating. Melancholy, feminine, brooding worries, contemplation of negativity."
However, for our purposes, Aziraphale is listening to the fourth movement, which is also the most political. (More excellent write ups about the entire work can be read here, here, here, and here. There is a PBS documentary about it here.) ((It also shifts to an ironic D Major as one point, which Mattheson describes as "Triumphant, Victorious War-Cries. Screaming hallelujah’s, rejoicing in conquering obstacles. War marches, holiday songs, invitations to join the winning team."))
The fourth movement is bombastic, letting the brass section loose right at the start. The main theme in this section is from an unpublished song that Shostakovitch had written as a setting for a Pushkin poem. The piece as a whole and specifically this movement is a direct critique of Stalin himself.
The poem?
With sleepy brush the barbarian artist The master’s painting blackens; And thoughtlessly his wicked drawing Over it he is daubing. But in years the foreign colors Peal off, an aged layer: The work of genius is ‘gain before us, With former beauty out it comes. Thus my failings vanish too From my wearied soul, And again within it visions rise, Of my early purer days.
Which I think speaks for itself in what kind of mentality Aziraphale might have listening to the symphony.
I'm not sure which recording he listens to, but in the record shop we are shown that it's a record with a blue label on the disk. There are several recordings that have blue labels including the 1972 Moscow Philharmonic with Kiril Kondrashin and the 1989 Scottish National Orchestra with Neeme Jarvi. Leonard Bernstein and the NY Philharmonic have a very famous recording as well.
But I think the most likely is the 1962 Vienna Philharmonic with Constantin Silvestri. Why? Well, here's the record:

Appearance & Personality:
Lucifer is a slender-figured fallen angel who sports a close resemblance to his daughter, Charlie - having her white skin with rosy-cheeks, blonde hair with thin light coral streaks on the thicker, paler blonde highlights, and eyes with light yellow sclera and red pupils. He is shorter than his daughter, though not by a large amount.
Unlike Charlie, his mouth is full of sharp teeth, his hair is short-cut and has been slicked back with one tuft sticking out, his pupils are slit like a snake, and his cheeks are a paler shade of red. In addition, he also sports black sharp eyebrows, and his eyelids are light purple. His forearms also appear to be dark grey when his sleeves are rolled up.
Lucifer's white and red clothing is somewhat like that of a circus ringmaster; he wears a wide-brimmed white top hat with a golden snake and a red apple over golden spikes, which resemble a crown, and a red-lined and red-trimmed white popped-collared suit with several golden buttons - his coat worn over a light red-and-white striped waistcoat with two golden buttons and a small, accessorized black bowtie. In "The Show Must Go On" his suit has red and golden epaulets, resembling those of a ringmaster.
He also wears a set of heeled black knee-high boots. On his left pinkie, he sports a golden ring which is presumably his wedding ring.
Lucifer is usually seen carrying an apple-topped black cane that matches his hat. Due to his angel origins, he possesses six white wings with red feathers, which he can extend from his coat.
Demonic form:
When he takes on his full demonic form, as well as displaying his wings, he displays a pair of red horns with an orb of fire between them and a thin crown resembling a snake with an apple above his hat. His eyes also change to have red sclera with yellow pupils. He also has a black tail with spikes that end in a triangular tip with a red heart at the center.
Eyes also appear on the inside of his coattails, and a similar eye also appears on his bowtie. In addition, his entire body gives off a light white glow.
Pilot:
In the pilot, Lucifer's appearance is nearly the same, only his pupils were instead black, just like Charlie's pilot design. The snake around his hat was also colored purple.
How to describe Lucifer’s personality?
• Threatrical
• Depressive (post separation)
• Melancholic
• Socially awkward (autistic)
• Ambitious
• Obsessive (with special interest)
• Mindless
Other (rarely):
• Egotistical >>> 1x08
• Violent
• Protective (especially when it comes to Charlie)
• Fearless
With Alastor:
• Prideful 😂🤣
• Jealous
• Insecure >>> about his paternalism towards Charlie
• Competitive

I really can't stand the endless documentaries that are like "OH EM GEE WAS ATLANTIS REAL?!"
NO. IT WASN'T. PLATO ADMITTED IN HIS OWN WRITINGS IT WAS AN ALLEGORY YOU OVERFUNDED CROCKUMENTARY DINGUSES.
Allegory was practically Plato's whole thing. Short of stuffing words in Socrates' mouth (Plato basically considered Socrates to be the wisest man who ever lived and so when he wanted something to sound important or wise, he'd have Socrates say it in his dialogues), it was his favorite method of imparting a lesson. Anyone who claims to be "using Plato's writings as a map to find Atlantis" wasn't ACTUALLY reading those in the manner Plato intended and Plato would have knocked them flat on their ass for it.
Plato may have been a thinking man but he was also RIPPED and not afraid to throw hands — like many Greeks of his age he enjoyed boxing and wrestling and regularly took part in the Isthmian Games and was commented upon by several contemporaries as "a most talented grappler", so let's not pretend this man wouldn't put you on the ground if he thought you weren't getting the message.
And the message was that Plato spun a yarn about how even the greatest, most glorious civilizations can so completely fail and give way to the basest, darkest parts of human nature and decline so far that when the end comes for them, it is not a tragedy, but rather a blessing. The whole point of the Allegory of Atlantis is that they had their chance and they're better off dead, and you should NOT seek to be like them BECAUSE they failed.
In short: "If they were worth emulating, they would still be here. They are neither."
Despite occurring nearly a thousand years earlier, the story of the destruction of the isle of Thera and its golden city of Akrotiri by volcanic apocalypse would have been known to men of Plato's generation (an island effectively deleting itself off the map in a single massive —never mind DRAMATIC— explosion, darkening the skies for miles around, cooling the climate, and wiping out one of the most technologically advanced, wealthy, and prosperous societies to have ever existed in the region is not the sort of thing people in the area tend to just... forget, after all), and since volcanoes would not be even slightly understood until after Pompeii and Herculaneum, the only reasoned explanation at Plato's time would have been "the gods did it", and if the gods did it, they must have had a reason for it, even if that reason was not visible to us mere mortals, and it's from those considerations that the Allegory of Atlantis springs.
As Plato writes in Critias of the destruction of "Atlantis":
By such reflections and by the continuance in them of a divine nature, the qualities which we have described grew and increased among them; but when the divine portion began to fade away, and became diluted too often and too much with the mortal admixture, and the human nature got the upper hand, they then, being unable to bear their fortune, behaved unseemly, and to him who had an eye to see grew visibly debased, for they were losing the fairest of their precious gifts; but to those who had no eye to see the true happiness, they appeared glorious and blessed at the very time when they were full of avarice and unrighteous power. Zeus, the god of gods, who rules according to law, and is able to see into such things, perceiving that an honorable race was in a woeful plight, and wanting to inflict punishment on them, that they might be chastened and improve, collected all the gods into their most holy habitation, which, being placed in the center of the world, beholds all created things.
We can see Plato's general point summed up in that quote: the people of Atlantis were a good people, a hard working people, and ascended greatly as they emulated that which was best about man and the gods (aka Plato's values), and declined as they ceased to cherish what Plato believed was good and embraced what he considered evil, until they became so fallen, so depraved, and had committed such crimes that Zeus, "who rules according to law", was forced to pass judgment upon and destroy them "in a single day and night of misfortune".
Atlantis was an allegory for how even the mightiest and most virtuous of civilizations can fall prey to the temptations of decadence and pride if your own pride is not paired with self-vigilance. The people of Atlantis were at one time prosperous, virtuous, and rightly proud. But they let their pride get the better of them. They became selfish and overconfident, they let the darker side of human nature rule them.
Plato considered it righteous for the gods to “reward” the selfish and the careless with just vengeance. "When all their pride has been shattered", the principle argues, "they can return to a better, earlier form of what they used to be."
The most illustrative demonstration of Atlantean wickedness and decadence is this line:
To those who had no eye to see the true happiness, they appeared glorious and blessed at the very time when they were full of avarice and unrighteous power.
It's like looking at <spins the wheel of pop culture dystopia> the Capital of Panem from "The Hunger Games" and deciding that since it's full of extravagant fashion, beautiful architecture, and sumptuous foods and everyone is partying constantly, that this is a fundamentally good and happy society. But they aren't. They are prisoners of their own oppressive system and their need to maintain it to keep the status quo preserved, they are slaves to their greed and chronic consumption, and all the selfish and excessive pleasures, all glitz and the glamor, cannot cover up the massive collective void in their society's hearts. The Capital and everyone in it is DEEPLY unhappy and is simply covering it up with more and more surface level comforts and hedonism, trying to "consume away" the pain at the expense of others they have oppressed and effectively enslaved, while their leaders are no happier, unable to enjoy the fruits of their decades of labor establishing their nation, as they know how fragile the house of cards really is, and all fear the backstabbing schemes of others in the leadership structure, with none more feared and fearful than the "King" at the very top, which ends up resulting in the destruction of everything he and those before him have built, and his own personal death as well.
THAT is Atlantis. Atlantis is exactly as real as Panem's Capital. And Atlantis is the same kind of story: a corrupt and wicked dystopia, a once shining society brought low by the worst aspects of human nature, and utterly deserving the destruction wrought upon it.
If Plato were here today, he'd probably say something like "Seek not Atlantis, for you will find nothing — nothing but a tale of man's own inclination towards self-ruin."

Jet-Skiing through Identity: A Deep Dive into Mobius M. Mobius (final part)
"Part of the journey is the end" (Tony Stark in Avengers Endgame")
l find it so beautiful that this character managed to bring the Loki fandom so far with him 🧡
He didn't even have a popular background in the comics, we only got to know him because of the show. He started as a sidekick and comedic relief, an analyst with bright ideas that no one believed was going to work and a soft spot for broken things.
Then, he became a rebel breaking out from the organization that indoctrinated his whole life and the life of others. A fighter for free will. A lost man, never wanting to look or to know, but not so lost when he has the 1 he loves next to him.
And through all of it, a kind person, with a golden heart still speaking too loudly to be ignored - no matter what. And the sun still shines over that pulse, even if the rest of the world doesn't.
Let's dive into the last part of this series.
We get to meet Mobius's original self: Don, in "Science/Fiction". His joyous nature and opening to strangers makes you want to trust him. Don is basically a Mobius that never got to experience the horrors of the TVA. That is telling us how much of his character was restrained because of them, and how much was simply erased from memory. Even if his core self stayed, it had to stay very deep within, hidden, for Mobius not to get hurt by the TVA's rules.
A similarity between Don and Mobius is the deep care Don has for his loved ones: that's the thing motivating him in spite of risks. I also love how, even confused, Don seeks good. "Are you really my friend?" shows how, even if he doesn't understand this all, he knows it can be for the better. He even likes the sound of "Mobius" :
Tumblr media
In the sixth and final episode, "Glorious Purpose", we get to some of my favorites quotes ever. And they're spoken by Mobius (i'll get to them in a minute)
Mobius has always been a weaver of details. But I want to point out how this web intensifies its strength when it comes to Loki. No one there noticed how there's something different going on but Mobius. Because, if to be loved is to be changed, to love is to change. And they both know that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then comes this epic conversation between Loki, who timeslips back to his first day at the TVA only to talk with Mobius. And it is this final conversation that makes the final piece of the puzzle for Loki. That's how important it is. Warning, tears were shed.
"Mobius, I need your help" "Well, I'm listening"
Even across the vast tapestry of time, the threads uniting Mobius to Loki never break. He'd only just met this variant, yet he's ready to listen, to help him despite every reason he shouldn't. Plus, this is more proof to the golden heart he listens to, of which I talked earlier.
Mobius then talks about how they don't choose at the TVA, the Time Keepers do. See how much of a person's unique way of being and thinking is repressed here if Mobius, who already shows to be open minded, gives this as an automatic response? Obviously it's a result of the constant indoctrination system that they live in, that wipes memories when things get inconvinient.
And the way he speaks this line:
Tumblr media
Further backs up the argument that the TVA is a dystopian-totalitarian society, where even the slightest of emotions are suppressed. And it's not Mobius's fault that he had to do the same.
"Most purpose is more burden than glory"
To the Loki Mobius thinks he's talking to, this probably wouldn't mean much. But to season 2 Loki, it is everything, a hurtful summary for what he has been enduring for centuries.
And Mobius is right: he wasn't only talking to Loki when he said that line. I wonder how many of you reading this were searching for glory, only to find the burden that you have to bear instead. Then realize that it's better to bear the burden and have the purpose, then lose the purpose altogether. This is why it's one of my favorite lines: it references all the way back to Avengers 2012, and it gets right to your heart.
But how do you live with the burden? I have some things to say about Mobius's reply to this, too:
"Scar tissue"
So, in the end, it becomes part of you.
Similar to the Kintsugi art of mending objects, not by trying to hide what was broken, but by making those fissures part of the object's history.
And scar tissue, just like Kintsugi, is always stronger than it was before the deep injury healed. What Mobius is saying is, that even after choosing to bear the burden of preserving the Sacred Timeline, after all that hurt, it also made him stronger.
"She knew the hard thing to do was the thing that had to be done"
This is the final trigger, what made Loki "tick". Because, just as Mobius learned that from his past, Loki knows it is the last option he has in his future. And that is the hard thing to do. I don't think I "can bear to narrate what happens next".
"No, there's no comfort. You just choose your burden."
Little did he know he would, in fact, find comfort in Loki, and the other way around. But the burden had to be chosen in order for the purpose to be completed.
And we get to the end. There is no need for imagery for any of us since I know the final shots of the Loki series have been haunting us since November.
But there he is, free to do whatever he wants. He could take Sylvie's example and live his life, wander off from timeline to timeline now that all of them are safe. But he doesn't.
He just lets time pass.
Because, after all the development he went through, all the insight and glory he gained, he can't move on without Loki by his side. He probably didn't even realize how much he loves them before remaining all alone.
So he does the one thing he can, and knows best: he lets time pass. As if, when enough of it had gone by, he could start passing with time too. But not yet.
Part of the journey is the end. But isn't every end a new beginning?

Two of Cups. Art by Nara Lesser, from Neurotic Owl’s Faerytale Tarot.
I was thinking that this was bending my rules a bit, since Christina Rosetti’s The Goblin Market is very much a literary single author fairytale, but then so are all of the Hans Christian Andersen stories I’ve used, so that’s not it.  And the idea of eating fairy fruit and being trapped in a fairy bargain obviously predates Rosetti by a long, long ways – the basic story has been told in lots of different ways and places.  The ones that really feel like they don’t fit to me are Pinocchio, The Wizard of Oz, and Alice, and honestly it’s messy and I can’t tell you exactly why those three don’t feel the same to me as all of these other stories.  Luckily this is my random project and I don’t have to justify my choices, so behold, Lizzie and Laura about to get in trouble.
Have y’all read ‘The Goblin Market’?  You very much should, it’s beautiful and a quick read, and you can find the full text here.  I read it lots of times as a child and then not at all for a long time – it’s been sitting on my shelf for 20+ years and I just hadn’t picked it up again till I read ‘The Goblins of Bellwater’ (excellent modern fairytale, highly recommend) and the section quoted at the beginning made me go WHAT and pick it up again.  I was a very oblivious child you guys.  I was busy with the scary goblins and tempting fruit and hahahaha platonic sisterly love story omg tiny Nara.
I mean:
‘Evening by evening Among the brookside rushes, Laura bow’d her head to hear, Lizzie veil’d her blushes: Crouching close together In the cooling weather, With clasping arms and cautioning lips, With tingling cheeks and finger tips. “Lie close,” Laura said, Pricking up her golden head: “We must not look at goblin men, We must not buy their fruits: Who knows upon what soil they fed Their hungry thirsty roots?”
And then later, when Lizzie has braved the goblins and gotten covered in fairy fruit juice to save Laura:
‘She cried, “Laura,” up the garden, “Did you miss me? Come and kiss me. Never mind my bruises, Hug me, kiss me, suck my juices Squeez’d from goblin fruits for you, Goblin pulp and goblin dew. Eat me, drink me, love me; Laura, make much of me; For your sake I have braved the glen And had to do with goblin merchant men.”
So, yes, the poem both calls them sisters and very carefully points out that later in life they end up properly married with children but nope, sorry, ‘sisters’ in the same sense that the two doctors in Ballet Shoes are just spinster roommates.

Hiii!! So I saw you posted that you need ideas for a fanfic, so here are a few that I feel like you could use! (I have some more on my page if you aren’t feeling any of the below)
• Praise Kink AU (already recommended in your comments, but the idea may be fun to write)
• I’m not sure of the name of this AU, but it’s basically where one day, Mo wakes up with a tail and cat ears, and he has to figure out a way to get rid of them.
• Spy AU! They’re working on a top secret mission. You can make this as spicy or as pg as necessary :)
• Genie/God AU. One day, He Tian finds a golden luxuriously designed teapot. Little did he know was that it held a powerful spirit with anger issues
I hope this helps! Happy writing!! <3
Tumblr media
@kindregard @dollitanea and @stfuoxjustupdated : all those ideas inspired me to write a combination of the God/Genie AU and the Praise kink AU. Hope you'll like it <3 I'll do it in headcanon style because i have many ideas and not enough time to write a full ff. (but i wish i could)
____________________________________
- Mo Guanshan is a lower god who got cursed to serve humans for eternity
- he angered the higher demon She Li who demanded full loyalty and who-knows-what from Mo who refused to give in
- so She Li cursed him to serve humans who Mo despised so much because of their greedy and violent behaviour
- Mo was caged in a teapot for now over 300 years
- whenever a human found his teapot and took a sip of the made tea Guanshan would manifest and had to fulfil his masters demands for three years than he would be given to the next owner by chance
- but sometimes the teapot would get lost and between his owners are long years of Mo not be able to get out - the curse is really terrible - if he is out on earth he has to serve, if he doesn't serve he is caged for multiple years (sometimes mor than 30 years)
- many owerns of him were real asshols who just wanted to get their desires satisfied (not sexual but material) and never treated Mo real well
- especially when they found out that Mo wasn't able to do the big things like winning a war or get someone back from the death or even kill someone. He wasn't even able to make someone rich per se. He could help lifting the status and could make things happen that would lead to money but the humans still had to do their part. Mo was still just a lower god without the big power.
- except for an old woman who found Mo back in 1910 who was really kind to him and never demand anything big. Mostly health and food for her family. It had been Mo's most happy years since he got cursed
- it was the first time he experienced kindness and now he was longing for it.
- than years of silence again
- until He Tian found the teapot in an antique shop
- something had made him buy that old thing but he could say why. He wasn't even the big tea drinker.
- but then, just when he was purring his first cup of tea the air change and suddenly there was a young man in his living room
- "What the-" he would have screamed but his mouth was already covered by a hand
- "Yeah yeah surprise and shit. Can we skip the part where you're freaking out and try to kill me? Would make things easier for both of us. So will you let me introduce myself without screaming?"
- He Tian is too shocked to literally do ANYTHING
- "Perfect" and so Mo introduces himself and he gave He Tian time to process everything
"To get it straight... You are a god."
"Yup"
"And you are here to serve me for 3 years if I agree to it?"
"Unfortunately"
"Because, and I quote 'that asshole god fucked you over real bad'"
"That's the deal"
"So I can ask for anything?"
"Mostly, as long as you play by the rules I just explained."
"No war, no money, no killing."
"Wow one of the smarter monkeys, must be my luck day"
- He Tian takes the deal
- first he demands stupid things from Mo (cooking, cleaning, reading to him) and Guanshan already thinks that his new master is a real weirdo. He feels more like a maid than a god
- and He Tian does something really uncommon: he thanks Mo whenever a demand was fulfilled
- over the time He Tian grew found of his new found roommate. First he teased him quite a lot (try to find out what the god would do and what not and how he would react) but once that curiosity was satisfied he just enjoyed the company
- Mo finds out that He Tian was actually a lonely human
- he saw him handing out with 'friends' but He Tian never seems to genuinely having fun or telling anyone about himself. He was very closed
- "You humans are really weird. Why are you acting all fake when you are together? I don't get it"
- He Tian is quite for a moment "Because we don't want anyone to see our weaknesses. We have to act to fit in the society"
"Sounds like a shitty live to me"
"Says the god who is dammed to play butler 24/7 for eternity?"
"Touché"
- He Tian than smiles genuinely and Mo is a bit taken aback
"Tell me more about you and what it's like to be a god. Is there a way to break that curse of yours?"
"There is... but i would rather be serving She Li himself than going that way"
"What is it?"
"I would have to give up on my immortality and became a human"
"Would it be that bad"
"Yes"
- He Tian wasn't expecting that answer but he didn't pressed any further, somehow it made him sad
- later they kept oon with their weird coexistence until one day He Cheng came for a visit.
- Mo was hidden in his teapot but still could hear all what the brothers were talking about. Mostly how disappointed their father was with He Tian that would hid himself away when he should be helping their family business already. He Tian was arguing back that he needed to concentrate on his studies and will help once he was done. His brother didn't sounded very convinced. "You know that you can't escape." "At least I can try"
-when He Cheng was gone some time passed until He Tian was calling for Mo
- he seems down and exhausted when Mo appeared before him
- He Tian let himself lay down on the couch and the silence grew
"Can I do anything?" (Mo doesn't knew how to handle the situation)
"Can you make my family disappear? Or me?"
"I already told you that I can't kill anyone"
"No not kill-argh doesn't matter. I just want to be away from all this. Living a normal life. Do you understand?"
"No" how could a god understand those things?
"But I have an idea" he took He Tians hand
"Say 'I wish to be far away'"
"I wish to be far away?"
"Wish granted"
- and Mo teleports them on a greek island
- it won't make He Tians problems disappear but it was the only thing Mo could think about to cheer him up. To take him far away.
- they spent a beautiful evening at the beach until it was time to return.
- when it was time to go to bed He Tian held Mo back who was about to return in his teapot
"Can I ask for one more thing."
"Sure"
"Will you join me tonight?"
"Okay, if it's your wish" even if Mo didn’t understand why
- they lay in the dark and suddenly He Tian is grabbing Mo's hand
"Thank you. I'm glad you are here" he whispers
-and suddenly something in Mo is moving, it was like something hot was washing down his vains. It was the feeling of power.
- something Mo didn’t knew and She Li never thought about because Mo was too low ranked was that if a god was acknowledge by another being he would become stronger. And if said beings or more started go praise them (transferring their positiv energy to them) the gods would step up in their rank
- He Tian and the old lady both have acknowledged Mo and thanked him. So it made Mo stronger so he actually just stepped up in rank
- and He Tian's last thanks was so full of honest gratitude and happiness that it hit Mo like a train
- and it became like a drug to him
- He WANTED to be thanked MORE
- He Tian noticed the change in Mo's gratitude, that he put extra efforts in his tasks
- he asks Mo about it and since Mo is not able to lie he explains the situation
"Does that mean you can break the curse on your own if you get stronger."
"Yes! I just need to be strong than that asshole and then his curse is gone for good and I never needed to fear to become a human."
Now He Tian had to ask "Why would that be so horrible? Being a human I mean"
Mo looks him straight in the eyes "Because for our kind you would force them into a body without power that would die. Die in just one blink of the eye. It would be like if you would be forced to live the life of an hamster. It will hurt us and eventually kill us. I'm afraid of it."
- that was a lot to take in. He Tian never thought of it in that way, from his perspective a human live was long enough but for Mo it was nothing. Just a hamster.
- "I'm sorry"

How to Become a Mob Boss: Quote episode 1 to 4
"- Mob boss is basically the CEO of an organization. And some of these organizations are very big, and some of them make an awful lot of money." (George Anastasia - Organized Crime Writer - Episode 1)
"- You have to be smart and know how to motivate and, at times, frighten people to keep them in line." (George Anastasia - Episode 1)
"- To be a successful mob boss, first of all, you have to be driven." (Ellie Honig - Former Federal Prosecutor, Southern District of NY - Episode 1)
"- From Torrio, young Capone learned these rules. Dress for success. Keep your mouth shut. And when it comes to staying on top, remember, money is power." (Narrator - Episode 1)
"- Frankie Yale taught Capone an alternate set of skills. Always show you mean business. Never get outgunned. And make sure your reputation precedes you." (Narrator - Episode 1)
"- Start with this mantra any wise businessman must follow, never pay retail." (Narrator - Episode 2)
"- Frank wanted to try to figure out, "How do I cut out the middleman to maximize my profits?" And also reduce the opportunity for a law enforcement to penetrate his organization." (Episode 2)
"- Anytime your sales volume isn't up to your full market potential, whatever the reason, you've got a problem." (Episode 2)
"- The playbook solution to this common dilemma? Become the only game in town." (Narrator - Episode 2)
"- If you corner the market, you have control over the market. You can charge whatever the hell you want." (Emily Sweeney - Reporter, Boston Globe - Episode 2)
"- But how do you make sure customers come to you to get their fix? It starts with marketing. Like most organizations, you have a product, you give it a brand name. So you want people to look for your brand. You have to make sure your brand is good. But clever branding only goes so far. It's what's in the package that counts." (Narrator - Episode 2) "- Frank stamped his "Blue Magic," and it was the best drop you could buy. Frank made sure his production line was in the hands of a true expert. The manufacturing genius he called Red Top." (Episode 2)
"- But to truly corner the market, Frank needed something else. A solid retail strategy. Studying police behavior, Frank notices a key pattern. At 4:00 p.m. daily, cops on the early shift leave their posts. But the night shift doesn't take over until 5:00. Frank instructs his lieutenants to hit the streets hard during this golden hour. While Frank monitors his crew's customer service by cruising through Harlem undercover." (Narrator - Episode 2)
"- If anybody slips up, there's hell to pay. But when your product sells this well, sometimes all you have to do is sit back and enjoy. This is why the crime gods invented money laundering. Ready to turn dirty money into clean cash? While techniques vary, they mostly follow the same basic steps. Step one. Placement. Create a legitimate business with a bank account where you can park your illicit profits, like a car wash or a strip club. Step two. Layering. Use complex transactions to separate the money from its illegal source. For example, buy gold. Cash it in. Then send that money from one international bank account to another to make it even harder to trace. Or sink the proceeds into assets like luxury cars, jewelry, or real estate. Then sell them again. Bringing us to step three. Integration. Invest your freshly-laundered dough into the legitimate financial system to keep the taxman off your trail. Voilà! Your dirty drug money is now clean as a whistle." (Narrator - Episode 2)
"- Everything's money. This is America." (Episode 2)
"- But when your core product is high-grade heroin, the happy days probably won't last forever. If you want to build your business to last, you need a strategy that can adapt to all market conditions. Frank used a multipronged approach to address this problem. Starting with a PR campaign. He thought doing things for the community would be an effective way of protecting himself and his entreprise. Loaning money to people. Not worrying about if you got it paid back. Taking care of people. So he kept a community on his side. He also made sure to take care of an even more important demographic. Cops. Frank spent a lot of money paying off police. Having the police on the take means being able to walk down the street and not worry about being locked up. It means knowing that you're gonna have a supply of drugs coming in safely without being interdicted by the police. But as many mob bosses discover, acts of generosity can leave some men in blue wanting more. But the early '70s, Frank Lucas has moved his family to a quiet house in the suburbs. But when you inhabit the criminal life, business has a way of following you home. Today, Frank is met by a unwanted visitor, a corrupt NYPD detective he comes to call Babyface. He orders Frank to pay him 10'000 cash a month. Or he'll shut down Frank's operation for good. Frank doesn't see any real options. But then Harlem's top drug boss makes one last transaction. Frank joined America's team and made a business decision to cooperate to reduce that jail time. As a businessperson, looking out for himself, he made the right decision for himself. Even if it meant turning on his own brother. That type of betrayal is it's hard to deal with sometimes. What can I say? It's just business." (Narrator - Episode 2)
"- But when you're a mob boss looking to consolidate your power, you look at human emotions differently. Mob bosses rule by fear. It's the best weapon. Ant there's one tested method for putting this spine-tingling tool to work. To make people understand fear, you have to perform violence." (Narrator - Episode 3)
"- If you are able to say, "I can kill you, I can kill your wife, I can kill your daughter, don't fuck with me"... you become a very powerful person." (Episode 3)
"- Nobody demonstrated this lesson as effectively as Sicily's boss of bosses, Salvatore "Toto" Riina. But he was mainly known for this astonishing figure. He is thought to have authorized between 800 and 1'000 killings. Secrecy was one of his weapons, and it built up his mystique within the Mafia. This kind of ghost figure that could be anywhere and might be listening to you as you spoke. He didn't need a luxurious lifestyle. He didn't care about that stuff, but what he did care about was power. One of the things that Riina is supposed to have said is, "Comandare é meglio che fottere," which mean, if I can use plain English "Being boss is better than fucking." (Alexander Stille- Author, Excellent cadavers - Episode 3)
"- That's why as a mob boss, you'll sometimes have to kill more than the story." (Narrator - Episode 3)
"- By the early '80s, Riina was dead set on increasing his power within the Sicilian Mafia. But he faced a stubborn obstacle. Something called the Commission. The Mafia Commission, also called the Cupola, is a governing body of sorts of the Mafia. It was made up of the head boss of the different families. It was a way of collaborating to make sure that business stayed on track. Riina begins to sit in the Commission in about 1969 but begins to have ambitions of domination. Riina's modest goal, force the Commission to name him Capo dei Capi, the Boss of Bosses. But there was one small problem. That position didn't exist. He believed that he should have absolute power. He did not want to share. So Riina decided to turn the job he had into the job he wanted. The Beast's plan, destroy his top rivals' organizations from within. It starts by making secret side deals. In return, they do Riina's dirty work for him... taking out their bosses and filling the ranks with mafiosi loyal to Riina." (Narrator - Episode 3)
"- It's very important for a mob boss to be the guy holding the strings over lawmakers because it allows them to expand their control and their rule." (Narrator - Episode 3)
"- Killing Dalla Chiesa showed, "We can take out anyone, and we will kill you if you get into our business." (Narrator - Episode 3)
"- If you're gonna harm your enemies, make sure you do it complete, so they can never come after you." (Narrator - Episode 3)
"- There's a word for when you've got nothing left to lose, freedom." (Narrator - Episode 3)
"- The message is, "If you mess with us, we don't care how high we have to go, we don't care how protected you are, we will kill you." (Narrator - Episode 3)
"- Aniello Dellacroce, who was the underboss of the Gambino family, became a mentor for Gotti." (Michael Franzese - Former Capo, Colombo Crime Family - Episode 4)
"- This is not about diplomacy. This is about an iron fist." (Episode 4)
"- No matter what organization you're looking to lead, you have to respect its structure. That's especially true with the Italian Mafia, also known as Cosa Nostra. In Cosa Nostra, There's a pecking order. At the top, you have your boss. Under the boss, you have your underboss. Then you have your consigliere, which is basically the advisor or the counselor. Then you have your captains. That's sort of your mid-level managers. And then you have your soldiers. Those are the made guys. Beyond that, you have associated. They're not made members of the group, but they're people who work with and contribute to the mob. In the American Mafia, you can't kill a fully initiated or made guy in your family, without getting permission from your boss. You can't whack a made guy in another family without getting permission from your boss and the boss of the other family. And if you want to clip your own boss, good luck. You need approval from the Commission. Basically, the Mafia board of directors. The rules were clear." (Narrator - Episode 4)
"- John Gotti needed to make his case through the proper channels, but he decided otherwise. He said, "Do it. Fuck it." We knew we couldn't get permission from this thing. Bosses want to protect each other in the Commission, so we formed this alliance which we called The Fist. So, there was five of us, and there was nobody saying no. It was just a time and a place." (Episode 4)
"- Smart mobsters don't want attention on themselves from law enforcement, from the media, from the public. They know that what they're doing is illegal, and attention can only hurt their bottom-line goal, which is to make money." (Ellie - Episode 4)
"- If you're gonna be out there and be flashy, you're going to embarrass law enforcement. So now we're gonna double down." (Lou - Episode 4)
"- When somebody develops this hubris is they make mistakes. Because they are operating under this false belief that nothing can touch me." (Joni Johnson - Forensic Psychologist and Private Investigator - Episode 4)
"- John Gotti was an egotistical narcissist who appeared to revel in the attention that he was getting from the press and from the public. And the more he got, the more he wanted." (Ed - Episode 4)
"- He's called the Dapper Don. Whoever named him the Dapper Don should have came down and talked to him. The reporter. He would've paid that guy $ 100'000 for that label. He loved those labels. I mean, you couldn't make that stuff up." (Sammy - Episode 4)
"- He operated in front of the cameras. He made himself into a celebrity, into a "front page of the tabloid" figure." (Ellie - Episode 4)
"- The Commission hired Sicilian mobsters to have Gotti killed. They put a bomb in the wrong car. Were it not for a little operator error, Gotti's ego would have cost him his life." (Narrator - Episode 4)
"- To be in this life, you have to be willing to go to prison, because at some point, you're gonna get caught. So make sure your time in government custody is productive." (Narrator - Episode 4)
"- RICO is the worst law they ever put on the books. It's Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, and it's an all-encompassing law. It's very hard to defend." (Narrator - Episode 4)
"- You'd have to be a complete imbecile to be talking about a boss behind his back. He's got the ultimate power over your life, whether you live or die." (Sammy - Episode 4)
"- You know, that's a treacherous life. Dissension is created, and mistrust is created when something like that happens. Now, your own men are questioning that and worried about themselves. You know? What, am I next? That's what happens when you take your eye off the ball. You get a crew full of killers doubting your leadership." (Narrator - Episode 4)
"- The code in the American Mafia is silence. Don't talk about a murder that's committed. Don't talk on your phones. Don't talk indoors. Don't talk in your car. Everything's about keeping your mouth shut. The Mafia calls this code Omerta." (Narrator - Episode 4)
"- When you take the oath of Omerta, you're taking an oath to never admit that the life ever exists and to never betray the life. That's the oath. For a mafioso to break Omerta is tantamount to betraying your family, everything you know, everything you love." (Micheal - Episode 4)
"- It brings more notoriety to him. It legitimizes him. And it's getting turned around on the government that John Gotti is an innocent guy what works for a plumbing company. And they don't like him because he's in the public's eye." (Narrator - Episode 4)
"- The government was jealous of him because he was winning." (Renee)
"- In the end, Gotti did achieve the attention he always wanted. I think John Gotti represented people's frustrations with the government. How the government's always nickel-and-diming you, and John Gotti's fighting the government." (Lou)
"- Basically, Gotti was an example of how not to be a mob boss." (Narrator - Episode 4)
"- If you want fame, go become a fucking actor, or whatever you want to be, but don't be a mob boss." (Sammy - Episode 4)
"- Nobody tackled this challenge as creatively as Boston's most legendary mob boss, Whitey Bulger, whose ruthless attention to detail charted his path to infamy and then pulled a disappearing act for the ages." (Narrator - Episode 4)

Phil: 1, 6, 9, 13, and 19
Techno: 5, 17, 20, and 32
Wilbur: 2, 5, 12, 19, and 29
Philza:
1. Canon I outright reject
I... don't think there is anything I outright reject. I mean, if the emduo betrayal had ended up happened, I'd reject that. But that didn't happen. So I guess this is a rare instance of we're all good.
6. Worst personality trait
what are we even talking about he is literally the Perfect Man. having said that him and his entire bloodline could learn to communicate. Not that I'm complaining too much. After all, most of my Phil whump projects rely on Angst and No Communication
9. Scene that first made me love (or hate) the character
Gonna be honest, it was the birb-ness that first drew me in. And after that I lingered a little while on the "he's okay, I guess" area before falling hard and fast into favorite character territory. I honestly don't know when the shift was made tho, maybe after just seeing more of him?
13. Dumbest thing they’ve ever done
probably has semi-intentionally cut off an extremity before as a result of sheer curiosity.
19. Vices/bad habits
I mean, this man has plenty. in the seen canon we know this man does not deal with Anything. Master of repression. Also the whole food thing. If we carry over from the OSMP then we get the gapple thing. If we carry over from Birbness then he probably has self-maiming issues when under enough stress. I could go on.
Technoblade:
5. Best personality trait
He's a Cat Dad but for All the Animals.
17. Quotes, songs, poems, etc. that I associate with them
Through the Valley by Shawn James. If you haven't heard it, go look it up right now. And, of course, the usual things, Voices (the song), the word "orphan." Will never forget that Technoblade Never Dies
20. Scars
I, like most of the fandom, headcanon the face scars that I *think* were popularized by WolfytheWitch. But actually I'm not the hugest fan of the "golden scars on his head from the Butcher Army thing" trope. Idk why. I also generally hc that this man barely has an inch of untouched skin left after all the years. I tend to mix and match when writing for whatever is relevant.
32. Something guaranteed to make them smile/laugh
The Baby Animals part of Spring. Camping out in a field with newborn lambs is form of self-care i don't make the rules.
Wilbur Soot:
2. A canon or headcanon hill I will die on
When Wilbur said he was a "teen parent" he was talking about Tommy and Tubbo, and not Fundy. I have a whole thing about this but basically Wilbur has been looking out for clingyduo since they were young children
5. Best personality trait
He definitely cares. A bit too much oftentimes, a somtimes a bit too far, but at least he does care.
12. Crack headcanon
Godly powers/abilities/outward appearance/etc. skips a generation. Wilbur is as Normal as it gets. EXCEPT. if you put his dna under as microscope you wouldn't be able to identify that you even were looking at anything. Man doesn't have anything humans in his genetic code.
19. Vices/bad habits
This man is the embodiment of a bad habit. He probably has all of them. He smokes. He probably has done drugs habitually. He picks his skin. He bites his fingernails. He doesn't keep track of health or hygiene. he can't communicate. He's a habitual lier. I can go on.
29. Eating habits
not healthy in anyway. He just eats whatever's around. He's had scurvy at least three times.

Personality description: August was born with what they call a "strong personality". He has always had trouble obeying his elders, not because he wants to be mean but his likes usually go against whatever he's asked to do. He tends to have a short attention span which makes completing unenjoyable tasks even harder.
Although he tends to be loud and rambunctious, the tighter the boundaries set for him the more he rebels, he also has a soft side to him which he shows his friends through affection. Even if he seems confident and very extroverted on the outside, he sometimes gets insecure about himself and his future if he doesn't learn to be the right fit in the family.

Arrow crafting: can craft simple arrows enchanted with fairy dust
Animal communication: although August can't literally communicate with animals, sometimes he feels connected to certain animals ( he cannot explain why ) and will have an easier time understanding their body language and vice versa.

Has your character attended Insolitus Academy in the past? Yes/No Background:
Once a month, a fairy ring appears in the same place in the woods and a human is led astray. There is dancing until the human ceases to be and a big feast held afterwards, all to appease the ancestors and invite them back home.
In ancient times, there was a family of ethereal faeries. They were recognised by their golden wings and glitter and the faint glow their skin had at all times, as well as the twilight magic they possessed. But above all, they could see into the future.
As centuries passed, the family's magic began to diminish and shape itself into something else; their wings lost the strong golden hue, turning reddish instead with little golden sheen to remind them of old times. Twilight no longer bent to the fairies' will but the plants and flowers did. The saddest thing of all though, was that now the future was uncertain.
But nothing would erase the fact they were the descendants of the ethereal faeries, not even the whispers and rumours their family history was nothing but make-believe; how could magic like that simply disappear? The family says the mixing of genes was the cause of it all and still see themselves as higher beings of sorts, saying a prayer for their ancestors' safe return each night, convinced they still exist perhaps between realms or space and time.
To show off their importance, they require each child to keep up with and be involved in politics, to be well-mannered and highly educated, and understand trade. Yet the middle child of seven, August, did not deem all of it as important as the rest of his family did; he'd heard the whispers and rumours of others, how some people outside the family questioned their history and whether the ethereal faeries were real to begin with.
Being the middle child of the family, it was easier to sneak out than it would have been for his siblings. Instead of kneeling at the shrines daily, he preferred to explore the forests, play with other creatures, practice archery and craft arrows; after multiple attempts to tell his family that could be a way for them to get actual recognition, they deemed his behaviour "erratic" and would have none of it.
Since they couldn't get through to August, they saw it best to send him off to somewhere unfamiliar in hopes he would respect a stranger's authority more. His cousin had been to the academy a few decades prior which was how they chose to send August there too, writing the academy a letter where they hoped they would be kept updated on August's progress.

Rambles about the Golden Age Part 11
I really can’t believe I’m taking this long to do these. Anyway, let’s see if we can get through the end of Deluxe Volume 3
Rambles about the Golden Age Part 11
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. So, maybe this is a good place to talk about Guts’ journey and whether or not it was a bad idea. Because I usually see people refer to it either as, well, a shitty idea that results from a misunderstanding and ruined everything OR as a great thing he did and had every right to do and he just wants to break out on his own and be The Man.
And I think my perspective on this is a bit more mixed. Because yes it did arise from a misunderstanding and I do think it’s obvious that he isn’t confident that he wants to leave anyway - he wants to win Griffith over, he’s confident in that, but he’s already wondering if he’s doing the wrong thing even before the next morning. Plus, of course, he does eventually realize too late that the Hawks were the place he should have been the whole time after all.
But like, when he comes back he seems so happy. He’s found himself - he’s at peace with a lot of the things that had filled him with doubt and anxiety for all those years. And I think about how... Guts here is only 18 years old. This is the first thing he’s done as a healthier person and an adult - when he was wandering as a teenager he was a walking wound basically. And Griffith, as much as Guts loves and admires him, is an extremely overbearing presence - he’s one of those people who walks into a room and all the energy in the room just coalesces around him. My point being that Guts probably did need that time to come to a peace with himself and figure out who he is and what he wants.
...but at the same time, the way he left was quite cruel, wasn’t it? Not intentionally, of course - he didn’t think it was that big a deal, because he didnt realize how much Griffith loved and needed him. And as i said last time, it doesn’t make sense to tell the guy you’re trying to impress that what you’re doing is meant to impress him, because that’s not impressive.  Even so, if you turn that perspective around and look at it from Griffith’s side, it was sudden, unexplained, confusing and heartwrenching - not to mention it ended up triggering Griffith’s problems as well, so....
Long story short, to quote @zombiesgohome, “he had to leave to even begin to understand why he shouldn’t have left.” Because as long as he never tried being away from them, he always would have wondered - is this where I belong? Is this the answer I was looking for? And if things hadn’t gone off the rails, I honestly do think he would have ended up back there anyway. Because even though he does initially intend to leave again, all it takes is a short time with them and the Raiders gathering around him calling him Captain for him to realize that he shouldn’t have gone.
The big PROBLEM was his doing so without giving Griffith a heads up or any kind of explanation, thus leading to Griffith thinking the man he loves thinks he’s disgusting and can’t stand to be around him.
And I’m not trying to criticize really, Guts is full of issues himself and I do think he genuinely thought Griffith just liked his strength and thus felt like it wasn’t such a big deal if he left, especially with the war over. But, its best to be careful with the affections of the rare white hawk, for they are not as sturdy as they look and are, in fact, fragile under the skin, and designed to break.
Tumblr media
2. In the Deluxe version, the translation is altered to “that half of yours determined to rule,” which is still sort of a convoluted phrasing but I do think its clearer. It’s also very obviously calling Griffith half of Guts. Which, I mean. I mean.
This scene is great though because, in retrospect, Skull Knight here is literally just saying “I think you’re the next me.” And it does make me wonder about the specifics of his relationship with Void. I wonder about that a lot, actually, because the nature of the sacrifice suggests they had some kind of closeness - a relative? A friend? But that would be odd because if the theory that Void is the sage in the tower is correct then Void was, you know, locked in a tower and not paling around with Gaiseric. I DONT KNOW.
Tumblr media
3. And now onto the self-destructive sex.
So I’ve seen a couple of theories about the reason Griffith does this - I mean obviously it’s because Guts left, but what exactly is he trying to accomplish here? I feel like most people think he was doubling down on the dream because Guts took off, and that makes sense - Griffith’s relationship with sex is obviously quite unhealthy and he does tend to commodify his own... appeal, his beauty, his charm, people’s desire to be near him or be with him. It’s a thing he does, even though it clearly messes with his head. His entire relationship with Charlotte is exactly that. He has maneuvered her into falling in love with him, but of course he doesn’t really love her - it’s unclear how much he even likes her, but he needs her to achieve his goals. Obviously.
But seeing this as being wholly about him burying himself in his dream never really sat right with me, because it doesn’t seem to suit his actual behavior in the scene. And while I do think there is a “she’s the path to the castle” aspect to it, because... that’s what she is to him... I personally think....
...I think he had a need to be wanted in that moment, and needed to be with someone who loves him and doesn’t find him disgusting or dirty... and who wasn’t associated with the things that were hurting him at that time. This is one reason that he went after Charlotte, who is disconnected from all the Hawk drama, instead of someone like Casca.
Tumblr media
The thing is, the things she’s saying - I missed you, I was so afraid you’d die on the battlefield, frightening and sad things keep happening and I feel so alone - and the implication that what she wants and needs to alleviate these painful things is him... it’s what he needs to hear, but its also something he identifies with. Fear and isolation and the need for a person who isn’t there to hold all that back - something that comes up again in the scene with the King in the torture dungeon. Griffith never talks about his feelings, at least not directly, but Miura often had other people talk about theirs in a way that implies where Griffith’s head is as well -- and if you look at what he says to Charlotte... “take all the sad and frightening things and cast them into the fire” - that’s what he’s doing, himself. He’s burying his pain and fear and loneliness and notably...
Tumblr media
This moment, when his eyes go Hawk Stare?
Tumblr media
It’s echoed later in the infamous and often debated scene where he tries to hit on Casca... which was also right after he heard her expressing loneliness and despair.
Long story short, I think Griffith uses sex as a coping mechanism, and that’s a big part of what he’s doing here.  Moreover, while he does these things because he needs the validation and affection himself, and thus could be said to be using them -- he’s also letting them use him, or at least trying to. Because in both cases, the sadness, fear and loneliness they feel is also what he’s feeling. And this makes sense to me because using people and simultaneously letting himself be used by people is absolutely his M.O. And now here he is, just after being rejected by the only person he truly loves, climbing in the window of someone who adores him and telling her to free herself from her pain, sadness and fear through sex - throw it in the fire - which is exactly what he’s doing, himself.
Now, that said, there’s obviously some other stuff going on there, as well. Charlotte isn’t just some girl that he’s burying his sorrows in, she’s the living embodiment of the thing he’s been chasing his whole life. She’s the thing that, by accepting him, can justify everything he’s ever done, all his cruelty and dirtiness and all his lost friends and enemies...
Which makes it all the more interesting that according to Charlotte herself, Griffith straight up ghosted her after Doldrey. Which... does kind of imply that his attention was wandering away from the dream - You’re the only one who made me forget my dream and all that. So of course it’s also about reestablishing that relationship so that he can still chase the thing he wanted before he wanted Guts... because that’s the only desire he can still reach.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I do find it notable that the self-harm imagery is evoked again both during and after the sex - because the first time this came up, Griffith had just prostituted himself for money and power. Which does kind of say something about how he views his relationship with Charlotte.
Now, much has been said about Griffith literally thinking about Guts while in mid-coitus with Charlotte - I really think that’s... kind of an obvious message. It’s really explicit in the OVAs where he hears Guts’ voice echoing in his head and  every time we get a flashback to Guts, his excitement/responses audibly increase/quicken. So, you know, that is what it is.
Another thing is - Griffith keeps going back to that moment where Guts told him not to worry about being cruel, just like Guts keeps going back to the moment when Griffith asked him about it. It seemed like such a small thing at the time, but that moment lives on in Griffith’s mind as the man he loves approving of/condemning him to the pursuit of his ambitions at any cost. And it lives on in Guts’ mind as the moment when Griffith tried to reach out, and he didn’t understand it, and ended up turning him away.
Finally, on the question of whether this is a rape scene, please stop. Of course it isn’t a rape scene; if I'm being honest the only reasons I can think of to claim that it is are 1. because the person saying it is being disingenuous and just wants to find a reason to say Griffith was evil as a human or 2. Because they’re judging a 25+ year old Japanese comic by 2022 Western standards. I do appreciate greatly that the OVA altered the scene to make her consent clear... but I just wish.. people would keep context in mind before popping off. it’s a decades old story written for a target audience in a culture that to this day doesn’t mind the bodice ripper tropes as much as, say, America does. So I’m begging everyone to keep it in perspective.
Tumblr media
Randomly, there are as I’ve said a bunch of minor edits to phrasing in the Deluxe books. In this case, the second line is changed to “is common blood beyond redemption?” which I think makes more sense in context - essentially “I have been arguing in your favor this whole time against people who claimed commoners should never be allowed to rise, and yet here we are; was I wrong the whole time?”
And then we reach the King scene which...
Here’s what I think, I think we should all just assume everything the King says about himself and Charlotte, or that Griffith says about the King and Charlotte, aside from extremely specific things like “she doesn't understand what it means to be a princess”... is meant to be a clue to Griffith’s mental state. I’m not getting into the equivalency between Griffith’s desire for a man and the King’s desire for his literal daughter because I think the point isn't about moral equivalence so much as it’s about emotional equivalence. Feelings that are untouchable for various reasons, that they hide in themselves and can’t even quite look at until they’re forced to the surface by loss. I also think this scene is incredbly important for unpacking Griffith’s personality and how his character “works.”
Tumblr media
So that’s a pretty direct description of Griffith’s internal logic. It even uses the same phrasing - tens of thousands of corpses and all that - the idea that he is trapped into this role as the King, which he is good at but which wears him down - :"I cannot cease being king, there’s no way I can stop.” Griffith’s thoughts about the dream - if there’s one thing he owes to the dead, it’s to keep going, keep winning - the same logic used on him in the Eclipse when his guilt hits and he chases it off by deciding that if he stops it makes all those deaths and sacrifices pointless, so all he can do is keep going - there’s no way he can stop.
Tumblr media
Even if it means living in a “blood-stained, meaningless world without value, where people’s lives are lost like insects” or...
Tumblr media
-- as if they lives weren’t worth a single piece of silver, for example.
Tumblr media
In this world where they are trapped in this role that confines them and breaks them down there is one thing - one person - who keeps the cold away. A single ray of hope that is warmth, and now they’ve lost it.
Tumblr media
And this line - you’d rather have her, or no, don’t you want her to have you? I struggled with this line a bit because it seemed to be a distinction without a difference. But when I recently rewatched the OVA that line was translated as “or maybe you were patiently waiting for her to come to you,” which made the difference snap into place. Essentially it’s less that they (the king/griffith) wanted to pursue their object of desire (charlotte/guts) than that they wanted that person to come to them - to see them and want them.
And it’s interesting because if you follow the metaphor/analog logic that seems to imply that Griffith was sort of waiting and hoping. I don’t know how literal that is, I imagine it’s more of a revelation he’s starting to arrive at than something he was conscious of at the time he was doing it. But it is an interesting point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But this is perhaps the most pointed moment of all - and a parallel Miura specifically draws attention to at the end of the chapter. But for now just think about the statements
- the great king... once renowned with majesty throughout the land is actually nothing more than a lonely, miserable [...] man who can’t find any reason to live beyond [the one he loves].
-”You’ve lived on by resigning yourself to the monster you envision but you’ve by no means tried to harness that monster. While you were born to the sword called the throne and held it, it was nothing more than a burden to you.”
That thing you hate but can never disengage from so you’ve just accepted it, resigned yourself to it, much like someone suffering from sunk cost fallacies when determining their life course might do. Interesting that he refers to the throne as a sword, too.
“You’ve done nothing more than not fail. How worthless.”
They have each come to this point through a series of victories, never having to face or deal with failure. And now here they are, and none of that means anything anymore.
That this is meant to be a Griffith parallel gets flagged twice. First:
Tumblr media
The King’s tirade about how Griffith can’t possibly understand carrying people’s lives on his shoulders which, okay then. Followed by...
Tumblr media
Griffith’s silent stare.
The thing is we know very well that he of course does understand that, because understanding that is how he ended up doing half the things he’s done. It’s having the lives of his men on his shoulders that made him go to Gennon, and that made him keep going largely out of a feeling of debt to the ones he couldn’t save. And then...
Tumblr media
When Griffith refers to his own situation with the same word he used to sum up the King’s own fate. Because it’s Griffith his meaning can be a bit ambiguous but I basically take this line to be there first and foremost to tell the reader that all of that was meant to allude to Griffith’s internal logic and feelings as well... but also it’s him reiterating that everything he’s done and accomplished is worthless... and he ended up wasting all those lives and all that effort after all.
Now I’m not going to show images of Charlotte being assaulted by her father, the King, but I will say this much: Charlotte is one of the very few women in Berserk who is able to successfully fend off her own attacker without relying on someone to save her. Yes, she calls for Griffith but he obviously can’t do anything, and she still manages to protect herself. I’ll always have a bit of fondness for her based on that.
Also the King is a whole dickhead for killing (or trying to kill) all the innocent Hawks just because he was mad at Griffith.
Tha’ts it for now.

Free Will Part 2
So we’ve covered the basics in part 1. Let’s talk about how to use it for guaranteed results every time.
This requires you to let go of resistance because that need for control can be strong for this next part. But first let’s look at that quote from Neville again.
"This warning was given to man in the famous Golden Rule - "Do unto others that which you would have them do unto you." You may desire something for yourself or you may desire for another.”
"If your desire concerns another make sure that the thing desired is acceptable to that other. The reason for this warning is that your consciousness is God, the giver of all gifts. Therefore, that which you feel and believe to be true of another is a gift you have given him. The gift that is not accepted returns to the giver."
- NevilleGoddard
You know how you always want the best for yourself? Start wanting the best for others. If someone tells you they’re having a hard time. Don’t mentally react in acceptance of whatever they just told you. Imagine them happy and satisfied. Your inner conversations should be about your ideal scenario. Not accepting and reacting to the things you don’t approve of.
Neville had a friend tell him that he was going to be fired. The company was going out of business. So he imagined his friend “gainfully employed” and making 25% more money. Same thing happened with a friend who was sick. He imagined giving them a compliment on how well they are and then saying “I’ve never felt better”. They can accept or reject this blessing but whatever you send gets returned to you. If you imagine something nice for others that positivity returns to you. And the same goes for the opposite.
Now for the elephant in the room. Relationships. This is the part where you need to let go of resistance. I’ve made a post about relationships before but this goes for friendships or familial relationships as well. Imagine them happy and satisfied. Do not condition this. Don’t fall into the spiral trap of “what if they’re happy with someone else?” “What if it’s not me?”
Whoever you’re with, wouldn’t you want to look at them and see them happy? Wouldn’t it make you feel good to know that they’re content? You should always want what’s best for you. So if it’s a relationship you shouldn’t confine it to forcing a person to be with you. You should be manifesting being in your ideal relationship with that ideal person. Because if it’s your ideal then it will be what the other person wants as well. You both will be happy and satisfied because you’re perfect for each other. If you and your friend have an issue. (Assuming you want to save the friendship) imagine them happy. Experience the knowing that everything is harmonious between you two. At any point if they reject it, the blessing will return to you. You can only change your experience in relation to the world and others. Instead of experiencing resistance, force and separation, choose better. Choose harmony, happiness and genuine fulfillment for yourself and others. When you send that out, should you get a refund on your blessing it will benefit you greatly.
