"This feels like a golf ball being sucked through a garden hose."
I liked the part with the magnifying glasses.
Perhaps the most egregious of the Alien-but-underwater movies. The Rift has nothing original to offer, and barely succeeds at being a shameless knock-off. I wasn't expecting much, but aside from seeing R. Lee Ermey and Ray Wise ham it up, it wasn't even bad in a charming way. At some point a romance formed out of thin air, in service of the remarkably lazy ending.
Like in Leviathan (1989), there was really no reason for this to take place underwater; The set design, props, monsters, and entire last half of the plot better suited a spaceship visiting an alien planet. Things picked up a little once they disembarked, equipped with space-age rifles and disposable painters coveralls and respirators, and started blowing alien puppets into tiny, meaty chunks.
I really enjoyed the part where they casually dived to 27,000 feet, as though that's a completely normal thing to do, and not roughly eight times the crush depth of a modern military submarine. Later they almost sank into the eponymous rift, which we were told is "over 45,000 feet" deep, or about 25% deeper than the Mariana Trench.
Cheap, nasty, and only mildly entertaining. Not at all good.

Young women are more likely to identify as liberal now than at any time in the past two decades, a trend that puts them squarely at odds with young men.
44% of young women counted themselves liberal in 2021, compared to 25% of young men, according to Gallup Poll data analyzed by the Survey Center on American Life. The gender gap is the largest recorded in 24 years of polling. The finding culminates years of rising liberalism among women ages 18 to 29, without any increase among their male peers.
Several societal forces have conspired to push young women to the left in recent years, including the #MeToo movement, former President Trump, rising LGBTQ identification and, most recently, abortion policy. Slower-cooking trends in marital status and educational attainment have also nudged the needle.
“I think there is a big generational shift that happened with Generation Z women who were really coming of age in the last five years,” said Kelsy Kretschmer, a sociologist at Oregon State University who studies gender politics.
The rift between young men and women may widen further. Earlier this year, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a precedent that had protected abortion as a constitutional right for nearly half a century. The ruling has energized young women. New survey data, released this week, shows that 61% of young women consider abortion a critical issue, compared with 36% of all Americans.
“I would always choose a candidate that’s pro-abortion,” said Rose Merjos, 21, a government major at Wesleyan University in Connecticut who is an avowed liberal. “Almost everyone either knows someone who has had an abortion or has had one themselves. This is something everyone can relate to.”
The share of men who identify as liberal has held fairly steady for almost 25 years, according to annual Gallup surveys. Roughly one-quarter of men ages 18 to 29 term themselves liberal, year after year.
Meanwhile, among young women, liberalism has exploded. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, fewer than 30% of women identified as liberal. The liberal camp grew through the second term of former President George W. Bush. It expanded further during the tenure of former President Obama. It reached 39% in 2017 with the inauguration of Trump. In the last two years, liberalism surged anew.
Tumblr media
“Young women today are much more liberal than young men,” Daniel Cox wrote in a June newsletter of the Survey Center on American Life, a project of the American Enterprise Institute. His work documents “a growing political rift” between young women and men.
Merjos attends a university long associated with both liberalism and activism. These days, though, she senses more of both among the women.
“In all of my government classes, there are probably two men out of 18 people,” she said. “ACLU [American Civil Liberties Union], that’s mostly women. I’m wondering if women are maybe just more inclined to be involved in the community, engaged in the community. And that liberalizes them.”
Ezra Meyer, 22, is a senior at the George Washington (GW) University who leads the College Republicans. He is a conservative on a campus that is overwhelmingly liberal and largely female. In conversations with classmates about politics, he treads lightly.
“My metric for deciding if I’m going to be friends with someone really does not come down to what their politics are,” he said. “It comes down to how tolerant they are.”
Meyer doesn’t know whether the men at GW skew more liberal or conservative than the women. But he has noticed a distinct trend among campus conservatives this fall.
“We’ve been doing a lot of recruiting of freshmen on campus,” he said. “And I would say, overwhelmingly, it has been male. The conservative females that do get involved, there’s fewer of them, but they tend to be way more passionate and way more involved.”
Several factors have liberalized the nation’s 20-something women. The most recent, and perhaps the most powerful, is #MeToo, an uprising against sexual assault, abuse and harassment that caught fire in 2017, empowering millions of women to come forward and seek justice.
The inauguration of Trump in the same year pushed more young women into the liberal column. The 45th president battled his own #MeToo allegations and proved uniquely unpopular among young, female voters. Polling in 2016 showed that only 25% of women ages 18 to 34 favored Trump, compared with 40% of same-aged men.
The rise of liberalism among young women has also marched apace with a dramatic increase in young people identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer. In a recent survey, 56% of young women reported exclusive attraction to men, while three-quarters of young men said they were solely attracted to women. Prior research suggests LGBTQ Americans of all ages trend toward liberalism.
Several longer-term trends have fed the liberalization of young women as well. One is marriage. The share of women ages 18-29 who are married has fallen by half in twenty years, from 31% in 2000 to 15% in 2021, according to the National Opinion Research Center.
The growing ranks of single, 20-something women feel a sense of “linked fate,” researchers say. They gravitate toward female friends in political views, whereas married women more often mirror the politics of their spouses.
“The correlation between women’s sense of linked fate and liberal political preferences suggests that the Democratic Party will benefit” from declining marriage rates among young women, Kretschmer and two co-authors wrote in a 2017 paper for the journal Political Research Quarterly. They noted that “women make up the majority of the population and vote at high rates.”
Women also outpace men in educational attainment, a trend that dates to the 1980s. The ratio of women to men in college enrollment now stands at roughly 60 to 40, and it continues to grow. Americans who complete college are more liberal than those who do not.
“Putting off marriage, going to college, entering the workforce, women are doing that at much higher rates than they used to,” said Marc Hetherington, a professor of political science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “And all of those things are going to make conservatism and the Republicans significantly less attractive to women.”
In 1998, the first year of data collected by Gallup in its Social Series surveys, 28% of young men and 29% of young women identified as liberal. The gender gap in liberalism grew steadily wider in the 2000s, wider still in the 2010s. The 2021 poll yielded a 19-point spread between young men and young women, the largest on record.
“I do have some male friends that are moderate,” said Luci Paczkowski, 20, a California liberal. “And it annoys the hell out of me.”
What bothers Paczkowski about her nonliberal friends is not their centrism but her suspicion that they “do not have any clue why they are moderate. They just do not want to pick a side and, therefore, they are apathetic.”

Bahamut and Tiamat were aspects of Io/Asgorath in early 2nd edition of AD&D lore?
...as well being the two key archetypes influencing all dragons, and in 1st edition of AD&D, the only gods of dragons?
Tumblr media
2014/2015 "Rage of Dragons" miniatures of Tiamat and Bahamut
Wile changes to Bahamut and Tiamat (and deific dragon lore in general) in 5th edition (were Bahamut and Tiamat are the supreme, and only real draconic gods), and to a degree 4th edition (were Bahamut and Tiamat were 2 halves of Io), were controversial; these changes are actually based on far older lore, that was changed mid 2nd edition, with 1992's Monster Mythology and further on.
In 1st edition of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, Bahamut and Tiamat were the only dragon gods, with worship by dragons being split between them, as seen in 1984 article "Dragons and their deities" in Dragon #86: "Evil dragons worship Tiamat, and good dragons worship Bahamut. That is, for all practical purposes, the extent of common knowledge about the way dragons worship their deities."
The divinity of of two was first outright affirmed in 1980 in "Leomund's Tiny Hut: Rearranging and Redefining the Mighty Dragon" in Dragon #38; with Tiamat kinda earlier in the original 1978's Monster Manual, were she was presented among the Lords of Nine.

Miniatures of Bahamut (or as named in the catalog the Platinum Dragon) and Tiamat (or as named in the catalog the Spectral Dragon), from Grenadier Models 1990 catalogue, originally from the 1989 Dragon of the Month II line from 1989. Special thanks @oldschoolfrp, thanks to who I know of this lines existence. Their original post here. I recommend checking them out.
Paladine and Takhisis from Dragonlance, also debuting in 1984, were often identified with Bahamut (Paladine) and Tiamat (Takhisis). It's rather ambiguous though - the creator of both, Jeff Grubb believing this, but writers of Dragonlance novels, and main architects of the setting, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman (who basically gave them personality and story), believing them as similar, but separate characters/deities.
Official publications either suggested a connection, or stated them to be the same (as well as Bahamut and Tiamat gaining traits of Paladine and Takhisis, like being siblings, and in past, lovers), with 5th edition (with 2021's Fizban's Treasury of Dragons), stating them to be the same.

Constellations of Krynn, in the center Takhisis (left) and Paladine (right) opposing each other, the Gilean' constellation between them. From 1984's "DL5: Dragons of Mystery".
Still, Paladine on Krynn (the world Dragonlance is set in) is/was the leader of the Gods of Good, and Takhisis is/was the leader of the Gods of Evil, and were among the most powerful deities of the setting, equaled only by their brother Gilean and second only to the High God and Chaos.
According to 1989's "Player's Guide to Dragonlance, the two together created the first dragons: "Paladine is Father of Good and Master of Law. During the Age of Dreams, Paladine led the gods in creation. Paladine and Takhisis, Queen of Darkness, infused the raw fury of chaos with form and purpose, creating the first material beings— dragons. Takhisis, jealous the first creations were not entirely hers, corrupted the chromatic dragons to evil. Paladine replaced his fallen children with the good, metallic dragons, but Takhisis’s act began the rift between good and evil."
This origin of dragons on Krynn evolved overtime though, with some changes, but I won't elaborate on this here.
Tumblr media
1990's Draconomicon
The draconic pantheon was first expanded with 1990's Draconomicon, though oddly, Bahamat and Tiamat are not among the list of Draconic deities, at least seemingly.
The book instead presents Bahamut and Tiamat instead as seemingly archetypal forms of all dragons (even indeed, the twin Platonic forms of all dragons), even their gods, all of whom (with one exception) are their "pale reflections": " And here the conversation must turn to dragons, for in these species the diffusion theory seems to be the only suitable explanation for their wide-spread existence. Dragons are the only creatures for which there exist archetypal forms. In dragonkind, these forms are Bahamut, the Platinum Dragon, and Tiamat, the Chromatic Dragon. All of the core species of dragonkind the good aligned metallic dragons and the evil-aligned chromatic dragons (ignoring for a moment those fringe species like crystal dragons) seem to be pale reflections of their archetypal forms, displaying some but not all of that archetypes characteristics. For example, a red dragon possesses some but not all of the characteristics attributed to Tiamat, while a gold dragon possesses some but not all of the characteristics attributed to Bahamut. Indulging in mathematical language for a moment, each species of dragon seems to be a subset of properties belonging to one or other of the archetypes. Or, conversely, each archetype seems to possess a superset of the properties possessed by the appropriate class of dragonkind. Some sages truly believe this observation to be representative of the truth of the matter. According to this theory, the very existence of the two archetypal forms Bahamut and Tiamat is responsible for the existence of dragons throughout the multiverse. In metaphorical language, dragons are the shadows that the archetypes cast across the planes. As shadows are, in a sense, subsets of the creatures casting them as they must be, since shadows are two-dimensional so are the shadows of the dragon archetypes subsets of those archetypes characteristics and powers."
Two of the dragon gods, Lendys and Tamara, as Platinum Dragons, seem to be even closer to the archetype of Bahamut, both being platinum dragons themselves, but still lesser than him.
In the same book, there is also mentioned the oldest and highest draconic god, Asgorath the World-Shaper, later identified with Io. Asgorath is stated to to be creator of dragons, and the universe (in the sense of seemingly all existence), at least according to dragons.
But, the myth in the same sourcebook (as found in-universe in the Book of the World, a written down red dragon myth, suggests Asgorath is Tiamat: "It is easy to speculate, based on this myth. The plural inflection of the word breath might be taken as implying multiple heads; the Thorass word for renegade is bahmat. It seems almost too close a correlation can Asgorath be Tiamat and the Renegade be Bahamut?"
This is further alluded in Asgorath's description: "Thus, reds believe that Asgorath is Chaotic Evil as implied in the Book of the World mentioned at the beginning of the chapter while bronzes believe Asgorath is Lawful Good."
Suggesting that like red dragons see/perceive Asgorath as Tiamat, Bronze (and other good dragons) would see the World-Shaper as Bahamut. And that the two "archetypal dragons" are themselves seemingly aspects/parts/avatars of Asgorath. Which is further suggested together with Bahamut's description in Draconomicon: "Sages continue to debate the true nature of Bahamut. Is he the archetype of all good dragonkind, the ideal of which all other dragons are merely shadows? Is he an avatar of a greater deity?"
This is quite obviously an inspiration for Io being split in ancient times into Bahamut and Tiamat in 4th edition/Nerath lore. As well as in "Fizban's Treasury of Dragons", presenting Bahamut and Tiamat as the origin of all dragons, and their forms, it even also using allusions to platonic forms, and shadows of higher reality. As well as Bahamut and Tiamat creating the original universe (that split into the multiverse), like Asgorath was stated to.
Io was first introduced in 1992's Monster Mythology, if very probably taking inspiration from Asgorath (with whom he is directly identified in the book), as well as perhaps Krynn's High God. Io is also stated there to be believed by dragons to be their creator, and of all of existence. As well repeating Platonic and Gnostic ideas from Draconomicon about the world being a shadow of a higher, truer reality: "We Dragon-sages make a distinction between the Two Voids; the First Void, wherein only Io had existence, and the Shadow Void, where Io's willingly shed blood created the potential for existence and creation to come into being. Most non-dragon races only know of the Shadow Void, and they do not know of the earlier time outside time when only the Ninefold Dragon existed."
Monster Mythology though, makes Bahamut and Tiamat somewhat lesser in status, making them Lesser Gods, though only Io (as a Greater God) and Chronepsis (an Intermediate God) are above them, the other two gods (Faluzure and Aesterinian), being on the same level of power. Still though, it is a visible downgrade from their grand role in Draconomicon, and of their counterparts (Paladine and Takhisis) on Krynn. Monster Mythology is also the the first to make Bahamut and Tiamat explicitly siblings and "intended mates".
1998's "Cult of the Dragon" sourcebook, combined the draconic pantheons mentioned described in Draconomicon and Monster Mythology, often identifying/conflating some deities between the two (notably Asgorath and Io, though that was done before). Though this also resulted in a seeming further downgrade in status of Bahamut and Tiamat, them being still Lesser Gods (and Bahamut identified with Xymor, made as possible child of Lendys and Tamara), while including multiple Intermediate Gods (Astilabor, Garyx, Kereska, Lendys, Null as the Guardian of the Lost/Chronepsis, Tamara and Zorquan).

SUMMARY:
It's January 1996 and Steve has recently moved to Pennsylvania for a new job as a children's librarian. Urged to do something with his evenings by Robin, he goes to a bar around the corner from his apartment and sees someone who looks an awful like Eddie Munson playing his guitar. Only no one has seen Eddie in almost ten years.
Eddie Munson, whilst on the brink of death, was not so gently urged into the supernatural department of the United States Federal Witness Protection Program. The time he was in the program, he was stripped of everything he had and thought he knew, and was forced to become someone entirely new. He’s still trying to figure out who that person is. It’s been almost ten years, and in that time the only thing he has learned is that he is okay with being alone. He has to be.
Otherwise known as, a story about finding the people you’ve lost, healing rifts (the personal kind, not the supernatural kind) and maybe for once, finally, falling in love.

I posted that Barney Frank removed the trans component of ENDA and people are calling me stupid and accusing me of hating gay men. "Stupid" is subjective and "hating gay men" would make me a hypocrite to say the least, but I will simply copy and paste the excerpt from Susan Stryker's book Transgender History that I was attempting to paraphrase:
When Democrats took control of both houses of Congress after the midterm elections in 2006, ENDA was poised for passage for the first time since 1994. In the spring of 2007, even the HRC—long a holdout on a transgender-inclusive legislative strategy—finally got on board and lobbied in support of a version of ENDA that protected gender identity and expression as well as sexual orientation. All seemed to be going well until September 2007, when the bill’s longtime sponsor, the openly gay Massachusetts congressman Barney Frank, decided, on the basis of an informal poll of his colleagues, that a sexual-orientation-only version of ENDA could pass, but that a transgender-inclusive version would fail. Rather than wait to gather additional support or conduct more extensive education and lobbying efforts, Frank took it upon himself to split ENDA into two separate bills—one for sexual orientation and the other for gender identity.
The reaction in the LGBT community was swift and unprecedented—more than three hundred national, state, and local organizations formed an ad hoc campaign, United ENDA, to demand that transgender-inclusive language be restored to the bill. LGBT activists all across the country felt that more than a decade’s worth of work to build a more expansive movement had been betrayed at the last minute by the movement’s congressional leadership. At the same time, many lesbian and gay people who had never felt entirely comfortable being linked to transgender issues since the mid-1990s gave voice to long-suppressed antitransgender attitudes that they’d formerly considered too “politically incorrect” to express publicly—and supported splitting ENDA into two bills. HRC, which had only recently come to support transgender-inclusive language in ENDA, lost what little credibility it had with the transgender community when it made an abrupt about-face and endorsed the sexual-orientation-only version of the bill. In the end, the trans-inclusive version of ENDA died in committee, while the sexual-orientation-only version passed the House of Representatives—a Pyrrhic victory, given that President Bush promised to veto any version of ENDA that made it to his desk.
Granted, if this is my first exposure to the story then yes, perhaps I was overeager to post this and subsequently link it to that "nipples protruding" Trump tweet meme. But is it needlessly antagonistic to point out Frank's sexual orientation? No. I have previously lamented the excessive antagonism I see of gay men online, especially when "critique" amounts to simple mockery of gay stereotypes and non-normative behavior. I am, when all is said and done, a gay man myself. That does not mean critique is never warranted. Perhaps I was in a mood when reading this book as it detailed intra-community rifts caused by transphobia. And perhaps you would be in the same mood if you read the same material. But I disabled reblogs on that post because, less than 200 notes in, there are already people spreading it as proof of the eeeevil homophobia of trans people and their allies. And I don't want to be used to make such a ridiculous argument.

Netanyahu is a corrupt, incompetent failure.
I'll quote the conclusion here:
"Since around January time, the US has negatively revised its assessment of Israel under Netanyahu. He does not behave as an ally, he has accrued a debilitating credibility deficit over the years on a multitude of issues, and he has intentionally failed to come up with a plan for postwar Gaza - to the point where he is now seriously suspected in Washington of prolonging the war for his own political survival antics. The current showdown over the security council resolution widens the rift to the point that it is impossible to see how the trajectory will change as long as Netanyahu is in power.
At the moment, the US has three points of disagreement with Israel regarding the details of the prosecution of the war: the notion that Israel is impeding humanitarian aid; the number of civilian non-combatant deaths; and a possible military invasion of Rafah, on the southern tip of Gaza. These differences could have been resolved had Netanyahu and Biden had a working, honest and good-faith relationship. They do not. In fact, Netanyahu has a track record of confrontations and frequent spats with US administrations, from George HW Bush through to Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and now Biden. His -unsuccessful, it must be added -meddling in US politics is also a familiar trait of his since the 1990s.
The current state of relations is close to an inflection point, and could go in one of two directions: either Netanyahu is ousted or leaves or loses an election, or the US will be convinced that the bilateral ecosystem has faltered and warrants a major reassessment of relations. Under Netanyahu, Israel has reached the point at which its very value as an ally is being questioned. It took the US some time, but it finally seems to realise a simple fact: Israel may be an ally, but Netanyahu most certainly is not."
What this article doesn't explicitly state, though the implication is fairly obvious, is that there is at least one US President Netanyahu seems to have had a pretty good relationship with: Donald Trump. And one possible way out of the deterioration of US/Israel relations without him changing course or losing power- the departure of Joe Biden and the reelection of Donald Trump.
But sure, keep telling me how voting out Biden to protest the war in Gaza makes perfect sense, as opposed to what it actually is, which is throwing Bibi his only remaining political life line.

Washington CNN  — Rifts between the United States and Israel spilled into public view Tuesday as President Joe Biden warned that Israel was losing international support for its campaign against Hamas and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly rejected American plans for post-war Gaza.
The divides, which until now had mostly been contained behind the scenes, reflected growing differences between the two staunch allies as the civilian death toll in Gaza mounts.
Speaking to Democratic donors in Washington, Biden voiced criticism of Israel’s hardline government and said Netanyahu needed to alter his approach.
“I think he has to change, and with this government, this government in Israel is making it very difficult for him to move,” Biden said, calling Netanyahu’s government the “most conservative government in Israel’s history.”
He warned support for the country’s military campaign is waning amid heavy bombardment of Gaza and added that the Israeli government “doesn’t want a two-state solution.”
Speaking ahead of Biden’s comments at the fundraiser, Netanyahu admitted Tuesday that he and the US president disagree on what should happen to Gaza after the war. In a statement, the Israeli leader said: “Yes, there is disagreement about ‘the day after Hamas’ and I hope that we will reach agreement here as well.”
The pair of remarks amounted to some of the most candid to date when it comes to the persistent differences between Israel and the United States, its top international ally.
Before the war broke out following Hamas’ terror attacks on October 7, Biden had been open in his criticism of Netanyahu’s governing coalition, which includes far-right parties. But he has mostly stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Netanyahu in public since the conflict began, despite mounting criticism of the Israeli campaign.
Netanyahu has been asked repeatedly for his vision for a post-war Gaza in interviews with international media since October 7, telling CNN’s Dana Bash in an interview last month that he did see a role for “some kind of civilian Palestinian authority,” albeit one that had been “reconstructed.”
But in his statement Tuesday before Biden’s remarks at the Democratic fundraiser, Netanyahu said: “I would like to clarify my position: I will not allow Israel to repeat the mistake of Oslo.”
Biden’s comments Tuesday – in particular, that the current Israeli government “does not want a two-state solution” — suggest major differences with his Israeli counterpart.
That idea – of a Palestinian state existing alongside the state of Israel – took off in the 1990s, with a series of agreements known as the Oslo Accords, which created, among other things, the Palestinian Authority (PA), which assumed partial control over the West Bank and Gaza.
The PA was effectively driven out of Gaza by Hamas in 2007 but the Biden administration has made increasingly clear it believes the PA should resume governance of the enclave when the war is over.
“After the great sacrifice of our civilians and our soldiers, I will not allow the entry into Gaza of those who educate for terrorism, support terrorism and finance terrorism,” Netanyahu said.
“Gaza will be neither Hamastan nor Fatahstan,” Netanyahu’s statement concluded, a reference not just to Hamas but also to Fatah, the largest Palestinian faction, which was instrumental in the signing of the Oslo Accords, and continues to control the Palestinian Authority three decades later.
Israel began its assault on Gaza shortly after Hamas’ terror attacks, which left more than 1,200 people dead. Biden has said Israel has a right and a responsibility to defend itself.
In phone calls, however, Biden has encouraged Netanyahu to do more to avoid civilian casualties in Gaza, and top administration officials have said there is a “gap” between Israel’s intentions and the realities on the ground.
Speaking Monday evening at a White House Hanukkah reception, Biden acknowledged Israel was in “a tough spot” following the Hamas attack on October 7 and the subsequent war in Gaza. And he alluded to differences with Netanyahu amid the current fighting.
“We’ll continue to provide military assistance to Israel until they get rid of Hamas, but we have to be careful – they have to be careful,” Biden said. “The whole world’s public opinion can shift overnight, we can’t let that happen.”
Biden and Netanyahu have a decades-long relationship that has at times been strained. At the Monday evening reception, Biden said he once gifted Netanyahu a photo and wrote at the top: “I love you but I don’t agree with a damn thing you had to say.”
“It’s about the same today,” Biden said, adding he’d “had my differences with some Israeli leadership.”
Biden administration officials have been pressing their Israeli counterparts in recent weeks to begin planning for what happens in Gaza once the military campaign ends, including insisting on keeping the door open for an eventual Palestinian state.
The US says it would reject any proposal that includes Israeli control over Gaza and has warned against shrinking the Palestinian territory’s boundaries.
The US is also pressuring Israel to open the Kerem Shalom border crossing to allow humanitarian aid trucks to go directly into Gaza on an emergency basis, US officials told CNN.
The Israeli government on Tuesday allowed aid trucks to be inspected at Kerem Shalom for the first time since Hamas’s attack on October 7, but those trucks must still drive back through Egypt before entering Gaza through the Rafah crossing. While the move doubles Israel’s capacity to inspect aid trucks, it does not resolve the bottleneck that is emerging at the Rafah crossing.
Biden raised the issue directly with Netanyahu during their last call last week, the US officials said. National security adviser Jake Sullivan also urged his Israeli counterparts to open up the Israel-Gaza crossing before he arrives in Israel for meetings on Thursday, the officials said.
“Rafah cannot absorb a sufficient amount of aid to meet the needs of the Palestinian people which are only growing as there have been more people displaced,” Sullivan told CNN in a phone interview Tuesday.
“We need the capacity that Kerem Shalom provides – on an emergency basis – to get more food, water, medicine and essentials in to be distributed to Palestinian civilians and we’re putting that quite urgently to the Israeli government to say, ‘We are asking you to do this ASAP because of the nature of the humanitarian situation on the ground,’” he added.
A spokeswoman for the Israeli prime minister’s office declined to comment on the US move. Israel has so far resisted the idea. It cut off all commercial and humanitarian aid traffic from Israel into Gaza since Hamas launched its surprise terrorist attack on October 7 and has vowed to sever all ties with Gaza.

Summary: It's January 1996 and Steve has recently moved to Pennsylvania for a new job as a children's librarian. Pairings: Steve Harrington/Eddie Munson, Background Nancy Wheeler/Robin Buckley, Steve Harrington & Robin Buckley, Steve Harrington & Dustin Henderson, Eddie Munson & Dustin Henderson Tags: Alternate Universe — Canon Divergence, 1990s, Eddie Munson Lives, Eddie Munson in Witness Protection, Friends to Lovers, Slow Burn, Mutual Pining, Hurt/Comfort, Bisexual Steve Harrington, Bisexual Eddie Munson

While Marx often shows enthusiasm for the potentiality of enhanced forms of human cooperation enabled by globalizing production, already in the nineteenth century, he observed an antagonistic separation of town and country and suggested that production chains were overstretched and wasting resources. Today, lessening the spatial disjuncture between production and consumption must be an explicit feature and aim of sustainable and just transition and, in this context, calls on the left for partial deglobalization, including the shortening of commodity chains, have merit and are quite consistent with Marx’s analysis. In a process of partial deglobalization, production for local and domestic needs—rather than production for export—would again become the center of gravity of the economy. A move away from the export orientation of domestic corporations and a process of renationalization could also allow enterprises to begin to develop their own strategies, moving away from the whims of the global market and choices taken by corporate controllers. Such transformation could enable spaces for independent development in the Global South. To do so, they could focus on shifting agrarian systems, orienting their production away from agro-export (which is a source of tremendous ecological irrationality and unequal exchange) toward food sovereignty. Such shifts would need to be accompanied by simultaneous, coordinated shifts toward enhanced local and domestic food production in Global North, alongside a move from high-input agriculture to agroecology, and, in settler colonial contexts, enhanced Indigenous sovereignty. Within domestic spaces or regions, efforts must simultaneously be made to mend a rift between the city and the country. For a model of the environmentalist city, one could look to Havana for inspiration. During Cuba’s Special Period in the 1990s, organic, low-input agriculture was developed both in the countryside, as well as in the island’s capital through urban farms. Urban agriculture is here not niche or small-scale—it covers large expanses within and at the outskirts of the city, where rich land is located. In the transition to renewables, energy production should also be localized as much as possible. This is a potentiality inherent in renewable energy “flow,” in contrast to concentrated energy “stock,” or fossil fuels. While lessening the spatial disjuncture between production and consumption is part of developing ecologically rational production, this aim should be recognized to be in some tension with economic planning (at least in the longer term), insofar as expansive planning is potentiated by the socialization of production. Thus, calls for localization of production imply a diminishment in productive association across firms and regions and the potential to plan such interconnections. Practically, it is important to recognize that such a process confronts material interdependencies, as existing productive networks and infrastructural configurations support and sustain huge swaths of human life. Different regions and cities also have different specializations and different ecological capacities. In an existing world of evolved economic interdependencies, the reproductive needs of various communities require continued global resource flows. Climate change also creates severe survival and livelihood challenges on a highly uneven basis, and global trade and divisions of labor can act as safeguards against issues such as pandemics related to water-supply failures and reduced agricultural yields. More broadly, we should carefully consider Marx’s suggestion that well-organized territorial divisions of labor are collective powers and can be a part of collaboration in human affairs. This extends to territorial specialization, which, consciously organized, could involve a collaborative partitioning of resources and capacities.

In 1967, a hippie named Henry Starling found the remains of spacecraft from the 29th Century that had come back through time because of a time rift. Starling copied the technology and started his own company called Chronowerx that lead to the micro computer revolution in the 1990’s. ("Future’s End", Star Trek Voyager, TV)

I did something completely unnecessary and looked up ages and timelines for dreamland/isekai protagonists and liminal spaces. What you do with the following information will be for you to deal with now. (Because I feverishly looked all of this up between the span of last night and this morning, despite math not being my strong suit, there is a chance I took a few wrong notes here and there. If you catch any I missed, I’ll edit the op.)
In late 2020, presumably mid-December after everyone’s birthdays passed, Eustace and Jill (the Final Battle) would be 87, Fran Bow would be 76, Milo (the Phantom Tollbooth) would be 69-72, Jesse Aarons (the Bridge to Terabithia) would be 52-60, Sarah Willians would be 50-55 (depending on when between 1980 and 1986 The Labyrinth is set in), cinema Bastian B. Bux would be 52 (book Bastian would be 46), the surviving Stranger Things cast would all be 37 years older, Sunny (OMORI) would be 40-44, Calvin (Calvin and Hobbes) would be 41, Helena Campbell (Mirrormask) would be 30-34, Misfortune R.H. would’ve been 27, Coraline would be 22-30, Madotsuki could’ve been anywhere between 26 and 45 if she survived, assuming this was set in the year of the release date, Max (the Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl) would be 25, and if the same assumption as for Yume Nikki applies, Ib would be 17 (quoting exact years in an abstract alternate dimension is not exactly reliable), making Garry presumably between 26 and 37.
Clara Silberhaus (the Nutcracker) was a senior by the time Alice fell into Wonderland.
Dorothy Gale was the same age as Digory and Polly (the Magician’s Nephew). They would have been in their twenties when Peter Pan and his shadow met Wendy, who would be in her mid-to-late twenties when Christopher Robin played in the Hundred-Acre Wood. Christopher would have been 24 when Fran Bow was taken to Ithersta. (And while it could be written off as an easter egg, a younger alternate Fran was friends with an alternate Alice. Being a younger alternate, they could have both been born later than in the timeline of the player’s Fran.)
Christopher Robin was 29 when Narnia was rebuilt from scratch, Wendy was in her mid-to-late 30′s, and Dorothy, Digory and Polly were ~69 (nice).
Milo (the Phantom Tollbooth) and Jesse Aarons are 9-20 years apart depending on when in the 70′s Jess and Leslie’s stories are supposed to take place.
The main events of Stranger Things mainly take place in Hawkins, Indiana, starting in 1983-- or 1979 if you count the first time a gate was opened even temporarily. Project Async’s known operations ran between the late 1980′s and late 1990′s, and is implicated by association with the Loma Prieta earthquake to be based in California. Their first prototype was run in May 1982, a year before the first sustained opening into the Upside-Down. The events of EverymanHYBRID concluded in 2010.
The City of Light and Land of Shadows, the Hundred-Acre Wood, the Lands Beyond, Neverland, Wonderland and the Looking Glass, the beldam (in the book wherein Coraline did not take place in Oregon) and much of Narnia’s invitations all made contact with our world (or at least one variation thereof) through England, especially London. Whether pagan practice was all that stood between Brits and an outbreak of dimensional rifts before the christianization of Europe remains unknown. If all these events happened in the same universe, well, maybe that just happened to be the arrival point of that escape route The Web was working on. I, of course, am entertained by the idea of Jon the Archivist becoming Jon the Hunger in this absolute crossover singularity I’ve just propositioned.

marauders + associated characters!
gryffindor—🦁🔥🏆
black, sirius III- also called padfoot, he was born in 1959 to the house of black, one of the sacred twenty-eight. his parents were second cousins, and he did not have a good relationship with any member of his family nor extended family, except perhaps andromeda black. he rejected his family's values strongly, constantly emphasizing the differences between him and his family: making a shrine to godric gryffindor in his room, using permanent sticking charms to put up posters of motorcycles and muggle girls in bikinis on his walls. he and james potter were particularly popular, sirius' "thing" being that he was a bad boy- dark, handsome looks, arrogant, immense intellegence, and a tendency to ignore girls, which only made them want him more. he supported james potter wholeheartedly in his lifelong hatred for severus snape. they went out of their way to bully severus snape, and although he would later come to regret it, he never apologized. in his fifth year, he decided to play a "prank", telling severus snape about the passage through the whomping willow that led to the shrieking shack. severus snape went on a full moon, not knowing that remus lupin was transforming, forcing james potter to save severus snape. at age sixteen, he broke away from the house of black and was adopted by the potter family. he was disowned, but his uncle had pity on him and left him a large inheritance. he would later go on to be the best man and james potter and lily evans' wedding and the godfather of harry potter. Sirius was a tall, well-built, darkly handsome man with fair skin, medium, lustrous black hair, which sometimes appeared light in the sun, striking grey eyes, and an air of "casual elegance" as well as a somewhat haughty look on his face. in 1996, he died in a duel against his cousin bellatrix.
carter, richard- a former captain of the gryffindor quidditch team. he had a plaque up in gryffindor tower marking him as such by the early 1990s.
cresswell, dirk- born in 1961 to a muggle family, he began his education in 1972 at hogwarts. he was a favorite of professor horace slughorn, the potions master at the time. he was fluent in gobbledegook, the language of goblins. he would then go on to become the head of the goblin liaison office in the ministry of magic. he would later be murdered in 1998 for evading the muggle-born registration commission led by a corrupted ministry of magic, then infiltrated by death eaters. he is assumed to be one of slughorn's "all-time favorite students", implying proficiency in potions. he is also capable on a broomstick, and in very skilled in charms, able to perform a non-corporeal patronus charm, which is considered incredibly advanced magic.
evans, lily- born in cokewell in 1960, the same town as severus snape, she was in a muggle family. evidently, she was better off than severus snape's family, as her sister petunia sneered at him for coming from a poverty-stricken neighborhood. it was severus snape that told her she was a witch, which caused a rift between her and petunia, who wanted to attend hogwarts with her. she was skilled at potions, leading her to be a member of the slug club. in her years at hogwarts, she continuously stood up for severus snape, despising james potter for bullying him, despite not approving of his death eater friends, until, one day, he lashed out at her. he asked for forgiveness, but when asked whether he would still become a death eater, she realized he wouldn't change for her, thus, they parted ways. during her seventh year, however, she saw james potter prove himself to be brave and responsible, so she began to date him. she was also head girl alongside his being head boy. she would then go on to marry him at eighteen, also attending her sister petunia's wedding, although being devastated that she was not a bridesmaid. she is described as vivacious, popular, responsible, witty, charming, and kind. she was also a woman of great integrity. she had a slight temper and a sharp tongue, but was also willing to give people second chances. she was described as beautiful, with thick, dark red hair that fell to her shoulders, and almond-shaped bright green eyes. she would soon go on to meet an untimely death at the hands of voldemort in 1981.
king, r.j.h- born in 1957 or earlier, he attended hogwarts in the 60s. he was on gryffindor's quidditch team, and won an award for it in 1969. the plaque was shared with james potter and m.g. mcgonagall.
lupin, remus- born in 1960 to wizard lyall lupin and muggle hope howell, moony was infected with lycanthropy at five years old by fenrir greyback, who wanted revenge against remus' father, who was angry that fenrir had been released from trial. at that time, there was no cure. at first, during transformations, he would be brought to the shrieking shack, but the isolation nearly drove him mad. however, he soon became friends with james potter, sirius black and peter pettigrew. he tried to make excuses for his monthly transformations, but, by their second year, the other three had figured it out. by fifth year, each of the three boys had become animagi illegally for his sake. james potter became a red stag, earning the nickname prongs. sirius black, dubbed padfoot, became a bear-like black dog. peter pettigrew earned the name wormtail via his rat animagus. with them, he became more tame, in a way- even though he transformed, there was still some of him that was there in his mind. he was somewhat of a prankster, but was not nearly as much so as james potter and sirius black. he and the other marauders also created the marauder's map, which allowed them to see where anyone was at any given moment. he also held a dislike for severus snape by association. he was a prefect, although due to his loyal nature, he had trouble exercising discipline over his friends. although he was never cruel to severus snape, he would later come to regret just standing by and watching. he was described as tall, with thick hair, darker than it would be upon growing older but never specified how dark exactly. he is often described as having scars all over his body, which is logical but not confirmed. he was described as compassionate, intelligent, level-headed, peaceful, brave, kind, and selfless. despite experiencing so much prejudice, he still sees the good in others and is very forgiving. he was described as the most mature and responsible, and he was incredibly perceptive. however, he also had fears of shame and rejection, which lead to bystanding more often than he'd have liked. he was desperate to be liked. he was disgusted by all things wolfish and held a nurturing nature. he was skilled at charms, and he would grow up and meet an untimely death at the battle of hogwarts by antonin dolohov.
mcgonagall, m.g- note that this is only in the movie canon. m.g was a student at hogwarts in the early 70s and quite possibly the late 60s. their gender is unknown, and they played on the gryffindor quidditch team, winning an award for it in 1971 along with james potter and r.j.h king.
pettigrew, peter- born in either 1959/1960, he was either a pureblood or a half-blood. he was a hatstall, the hat taking more than five minutes to decide whether he was slytherin or gryffindor. he came to befriend james potter, sirius black III, and remus lupin. he idolized james potter and sirius black for their talent and popularity, living vicariously through them, so he often took part in bullying severus snape with them. he was described as stupid and foolish, and a very bad fighter. he was described as short, with watery eyes and a pointy nose, and mousy brown hair. he was keen and oppurtunistic, acting on what was best for him in the moment. he is cunning, to a degree, and desperate to the point of cowardice; wormtail was desperate for protection.
potter, james- prongs was born in 1960 as a pureblood. his parents were old, which led to a doting, pampered childhood with little limits. he was a clever student, and was a chaser on the gryffindor quidditch team. he was described as somewhat obnoxious, loving to show off, especially for lily evans. he also had a rivalry with severus snape, a result of him arguing with him on the hogwarts express about the best house and leading to a rocky relationship. thus, severus snape would follow the marauders around, looking for ways to get them expelled. in turn, he would use severus snape's own hexes against him. at some point, severus snape was curious as to why the marauders left every month, and went into the whomping willow tunnel, where remus lupin had transformed into a werewolf. consequently, he saves severus snape's life. in his sixth year, he and his parents adopted sirius black after he broke away from the house of black. in his seventh year, he began to tame his mischievous streak, becoming head boy with lily evans (despite not being a prefect) and beginning to date her. however, he continued to jinx severus snape in secret, although displayed a willingness to stop for lily evans. he would then go on to marry lily evans at age eighteen. he was disgusted by prejudice, and rebellious, but willing to make sacrifices for his loved ones. he is described as having an air of being well cared for, and untidy black hair. he was tall and thin with hazel eyes. he was said to have not worn glasses until his fifth year, and met an untimely death in 1981, murdered by voldemort.
rakepick, patricia- born around 1956, she attended hogwarts from 1967-1974. she was consistently the top of her class, but disliked by her professors. she had a massive rebellious streak, which caused her to be loved by her peers just as much as she was disliked by professors. she mentored younger students in the ways of trouble-making, even rumored to have taught the marauders a thing or two, as she was in her fifth year when they began at hogwarts. she expressed the desire to become a magizoologist, often disappearing into the forbidden forest via broomstick for days at a time. she had multiple negative encounters with centaurs, however, and harbored a dislike for them into adulthood. she went on to become a curse-breaker for gringotts with her niffler, sickleworth. however, she became a dark witch, ending up serving time in azkaban before escaping. she was a haughty-looking witch with wavy red hair and blue eyes. she was entitled, a daredevil, intellegent, smug, tempermental, and proud. she was noted as being unusually cunning for a gryffindor.
slytherin—🐍❎💶
ashe, duncan- born sometime between september 1, 1962- august 31, 1963. he was a mischief maker, frequenting zonko’s joke shop. he was also friends with peeves the poltergeist and olivia green. he was an excellent flier and potions maker. he died prematurely in the 70s-80s after a failed erumpent potion.
avery, [unknown] II- born late 50s or early 60s. the assumed son of avery, who went to school with tom riddle. he had a dark and cruel sense of humor, exemplified when he and mulciber attempted dark magic on mary macdonald in the 1975-1976 school year. he was also associated with the slytherin group that would soon become death eaters, including severus snape, whose friendship with him bothered lily evans due to his sadism, bellatrix black, rodolphus lestrange, wilkes, and evan rosier. he could potentially be regarded as evasive, given that, when faced trial in his later years for being a death eater after voldemort's downfall, he "wormed his way out" and pleaded innocent by reason of the imperius curse. in his later years, he is also portrayed as incompetent an cowardly. he is. also a potentially capable duelist. he is one of the sacred twenty-eight pureblood families.
black, andromeda- born in between 1952-1954 as the middle child of the three black daughters, it is unconfirmed whether andromeda was even at hogwarts during the marauders, the earliest graduation date being 1970 and the latest being 1972. regardless, she was thought to be skilled in charms. during this time, she fell in love with ted tonks, who she married. as a result, she got disowned by the house of black.
black, narcissa- born in 1955, she was the youngest of the three black sisters, andromeda black and bellatrix black (who predates the marauders, graduating in 69, only two years before). she grew up in a prejudiced household and continued to hold those ideals during her time at hogwarts from 1966-1973. she interacted little with her "blood traitor" cousin sirius black. she is not stated to be a death eater, but, upon marrying lucius malfoy later in life, would support her husband.
black, regulus- born in 1961 to the black family, one of the sacred twenty-eight. he began his education at hogwarts in 1972. he was named after his great uncle regulus. he was an avid upholder of black tradition and was hailed as the golden child. he was a seeker for the slytherin house quidditch team. at age 16, in 1977, he received his dark mark, admiring voldemort, much to his parents' approval (who never had dark marks but approved of voldemort's beliefs). prior to becoming a death eater, he began to reconsider after voldemort mistreated and intended to kill the blacks' house elf, kreacher, whilst setting up defensive measures for his horcrux. he is described as smaller and less handsome than his older brother, sirius black, and is portrayed as haughty, pompous, and eager to please, and after betraying voldemort was described as brave, selfless and true to his integrity. he is also shown to have respected kreacher. he was murdered in 1979, aged 17-18.
laughalot, steve- born sometime in the 1950s, he was the captain of the slytherin quidditch team from 1968-1972. nothing else is known about the elusive laughalot.
malfoy, lucius- born sometime around 1953-54 to the prestigious malfoy family, one of the sacred twenty-eight, and attended hogwarts from 1965-72 or 1966-73. it was there that he met his future wife, narcissa black. in his third year, he witnessed the resignation of the first muggle-born minister of magic, nobby leach, after he fell ill. his father was suspected of the crime. he was an upstanding student, one of authority and nobility, leading by example. when he was in his fifth year, he became a prefect, and he was also a part of the slug club, favored by then-potions master horace slughorn. in 1971, he became the first person to befriend severus snape besides lily evans upon severus snape's being sorted into slytherin. he despised albus dumbledore, who, at the time, was the head of transfiguration, and mourned the day he succeeded armando dippet as headmaster. he was described with a pale, pointed face, pale, blond, hair and cold grey eyes. he was a skilled duelist and was intellegent, shrewd, opportunistic, manipulative, prejudiced and cruel, despite maintaining an appearance of respectability. he does, however, show genuine love for those he cares for.
mulciber, [unknown] II- born between 1958-1965, he was most likely a pureblood, possibly half-blood. he attended hogwarts in the early 70s, befriending avery and severus snape, being mostly known for the cruel pranks played on other students. he and others bullied mary macdonald, even trying to use dark magic on her in the 75-76 school year. he then went on to become a death eater.
rosier, evan- born between 1953-1966, he was born into the rosier family, one of the sacred twenty-eight. he was a part of the group of slytherins who aspired to be death eaters: severus snape, mulciber II, avery II and wilkes. he would later go on to enter service under voldemort in the height of the first wizarding war with the rest of the group. somewhere around 1980-1981, he would resist arrest by mad-eye moody and be killed whilst doing so.
snape, severus- a half-blood born in 1960. he grew up in a shabby suburb, spinner's end, neglected and living in a household in which his parents always fought. he was described as unwashed with ill-fitting clothes. he befriended lily evans, on whom he had a crush, despite her not feeling the same. he was an awkward child with poor social skills. his rivalry with james potter began quickly, resulting from an argument over the houses they would be soon sorted into. in school, he excelled in the dark arts, knowing more hexes and curses at age eleven than most seventeen-year-olds. he created a variety of his own hexes, including levicorpus and sectumsempra. he grew to become friends with the group that would soon become death eaters: avery II, mulciber II, wilkes, and evan rosier, as well as older student lucius malfoy, who was a prefect and greeted him warmly. he was constantly bullied by the marauders. at one point, james potter jinxed him to levitate and hang upside down, revealing his underwear. lily evans came to his defense, but, trying to regain his dignity, he lashed out and called her a mudblood. he begged for forgiveness, but she broke off their friendship upon realizing that he still wanted to be a death eater. he would later hail it as his worst memory. his hatred for james potter only grew from there as he began to date lily evans. later in life, he would go on to protect lily evan's son as a double agent, and then die by the same fate- murdered by voldemort. he is described as thin, with a large, hooked nose. he has a stringy, pallid look, round-shouldered yet angular, a twitchy walk, and long, oily hair that jumped about everywhere. he is described as cold and bitter, often holding grudges, with poor interactional skills that hinted at depression. he was repressed and solitary, strong but silent. despite his death eater associations, he was not prejudiced against muggle-borns, but simply had a distaste for muggles like petunia and his muggle father. he is prone to exploding, but had a deep capacity to love.
talkalot, lucinda- she attended hogwarts sometime in the 70s. she became captain of the slytherin quidditch team in 1976.
vanity, emma- she attended hogwarts in the 70s, like lucinda talkalot. she was slytherin quidditch captain from 1972-1976.
wilkes, [unknown]- their gender is unknown, but they attended hogwarts sometime in the 70s, joining the group of aspiring death eaters: avery II, mulciber II, severus snape and evan rosier. later in life, a year before voldemort's downfall, wilkes would be killed by aurors while attempting to avoid imprisonment.

green, olivia- was born sometime in 1962-63 and her blood status is unknown. despite being ravenclaw, she was known for her bravery. she was also hailed as one of the brightest students in her year and was friends with duncan ashe. she once got lost at flourish and blott's, implying that her sense of direction isn't the best. she would then go on to work at the minstry for nine years in the department of mysteries as an unspeakable. then, upon being contacted by albus dumbledore following the abrupt opening of the defense against the dark arts professor position at hogwarts, quit her job and began teaching in 1991. she is portrayed with tan skin, wavy dark brown hair, and green eyes with glasses.
lockhart, gilderoy- a half-blood born in 1964, he was four years below the marauders. he nearly became a hatstall, as the hat also saw him fit in slytherin. he expected to be popular and hailed as a genius, however, he was perfectly ordinary. he did achieve good marks, and his professors thought he could certainly make something of himself, however, he was more interested in learning for the purpose of getting attention, not knowledge. he insisted he would captain the england quidditch to world championship before becoming minister of magic. he did neither, but was, for a period of time, ravenclaw's quidditch captain as a seeker. he began a hogwarts newspaper, but when that failed, he resorted to different antics: carving a signature of his name in 20-foot letters on the quidditch pitch (week's detention), sending himself 800 valentines (cancelled breakfast due to excess droppings in the porridge), and creating a spell that shot a hologram of his face into the sky, not unlike a dark mark. he is described as insensitive, impractical, insecure, insincere, vain, flamboyant, and cowardly, but also ambitious and clever. he was considered good-looking, with wavy blond hair and blue eyes and nice teeth. he had an extravagant fashion sense.
hufflepuff—🦡☀️💛
tough
houses unknown—👻🧠❓
aubrey, bertram- born in the 60s. attended hogwarts in the 70s. his canon house is unknown, although the etymology of his first name (“bright raven”) suggests affiliation with ravenclaw. james potter and sirius black used an illegal hex on him (possibly Engorgio Skullus) to cause his head to grow twice its original size. james potter and sirius black received double detention.
crouch, bartemius "barty" jr.- born in 1962-63 to the crouch family, one of the sacred twenty-eight, his house is unknown, but it is typically assumed slytherin due to his friends and, later, death eater status. he is described with straw blond hair, pale, and freckly. in his time at hogwarts, he achieved 12 o.w.l.s. it is likely that he was familiar with other up-and-coming death eaters such as lucius malfoy, severus snape, and regulus black. he took the dark mark in his later teen years. later in life, he would participate in the torture of the longbottoms, described as one of the most evil crimes in magical history. he pleaded innocent, but his father (who was presiding), who was ashamed of his death eater son, used the trial as an excuse to condemn his son and potentially show how much he hated him. he would then go on to kill his father. crouch's father was mostly absent in his life, absorbed in his work at the ministry of magic, but crouch's mother is recorded to have loved him very much. the crouchs' house-elf was winky. he is described as dangerously clever and perceptive, charismatic, cold, cruel, vengeful, manipulative, loyal, arrogant and sadistic. he is emotional and a talented actor. he was also known to have a love for quidditch. he was an incredible duelist, and was skilled in charms, transfiguration, potions, occlumency, and non-verbal magic. in 1995, crouch was given the dementor's kiss and died.
gudgeon, davey- attended hogwarts in the 1970s. he is known for have nearly lost his eye due to the whomping willow whilst playing a game, the object of which being to get as close to the trunk as you can. following gudgeon's close call, students began to avoid the whomping willow.
jorkins, bertha- born sometime between 1953-1958, she was a witch at hogwarts. she was known as somewhat of an idiot, and incredibly gossipy. she would often spread rumors and complain about mistreatment she received from other students, such as being hexed by florence's unnamed boyfriend, whom she teased for kissing florence behind the hogwarts greenhouses. she would later work for the ministry, floating between departments, beginning under barty crouch, sr, and ending up under ludo bagaman in the department of magical games and sports. she was killed in 1994 by voldemort, after he used her for information and disposed of her once he had no more use for her. her parentage is unknown.
longbottom, frank- born somewhere in between 1957-1959, he was indeed born into the longbottom family, one of the sacred twenty-eight. as he was an incredible auror as an adult, obviously displaying bravery of some sort, it is typically assumed that he was a gryffindor as well. it is also assumed but not confirmed that during his time at hogwarts, he met alice, and married her. unfortunately, he and his wife would be tortured into insanity by bellatrix.
macdonald, mary- typically assumed to be a gryffinor due to her association with lily evans, she was assumed to be at hogwarts in the 1970s. she is also assumed to be a muggle-born due to her being assaulted by mulciber. the attack was later brought up by lily evans, who was criticizing severus snape's new friends, mulciber included, by saying they were "creepy" and "evil." she would then go on to tell lily evans about how severus snape waited outside gryffindor tower to apologize for calling lily evans "mudblood".
mckinnon, marlene- was murdered in 1981, like many order of the phoenix members, so it is typically assumed that she is around the age of the marauders. later in life, she is mentioned in letters from lily evans. her family was said to be a powerful one. she is described as pale, with red hair and orange eyes, and in correspondence with lily evans.
meadows, dorcas- born in 1960, not much is known about her. she is said to have dark skin, black hair, and brown eyes, and was murdered in 1981 by voldemort personally, making allusions to the idea that she was a skilled and powerful witch.
shacklebolt, kingsley- born in or before the 1960s, his family was one of the sacred twenty-eight. his house is unknown, but it is implied that he either saw, met or knew james potter, as he would later go on to point out similarities between him and his son, harry. he is described as having a slow, deep voice that came across as reassuring. he was level-headed and calm, but with a justified temper and immense power. he was known to be a good judge of character, faithful, and devoted to his causes, although he is not one to blindly follow another.
tonks, ted- it is unknown when he was born, and when he went to hogwarts. however, it can be reasonably deduced that he was there at around the same time as andromeda black, whom he fell in love with and married. later in life, he is portrayed as affectionate and sweet, which leads to many peoples' belief of his being hufflepuff.
[unknown], adrian- born in either 1959 or 1960. he began his hogwarts career in 1971, and became a member of the slug club. he would later become a photographer, much to slughorn's disappointment, however, they would still keep in touch.
[unknown], alice- due to her incredible bravery as an auror and future gryffindor son, she is often headcanoned to be a gryffindor. other non-confirmed headcanons include her being similar age to her future husband, frank longbottom, which results in the reasonable assumption that they went to hogwarts together. she is assumed to have received at least five n.e.w.t.s of "exceeds expectations" or higher. she would later go on to marry frank longbottom and be tortured into insanity by bellatrix. she was a round-faced woman with short hair.
[unknown], florence- born in 1950s-60s, she was a witch at hogwarts at the same time as berthe jorkins. bertha jorkins caught her behind the hogwarts greenhouses kissing a boy, presumably her boyfriend.
