Okay I'm gonna reread the Rifter series

I read it years ago and I basically devoured it and loved it and adored it. I want to see if it stands the test of time (I mean not much time has passed but I remember nothing of the main plot... It was truly a fever dream)

I just remember that thinking about it makes me cry but I don't remember why

Hey, feel free to ignore this, but I sent that ask abt the rifter and I just finished book 6 and I thought you may be interested in like... Rifter discourse? If not you don't have to read this!!

The thing that amazes me about the rifter right now is the way that characters take shape throughout the story. I really like how we get Kyle's pov after we see John's view of Ravishan, because it gives a lot of context to his character - the way I saw Kyle in the beginning and the way I see him now are very different. It's the same way with John.

It's really as though we get to know them as people, not as characters, and the longer we spend with them, the fuller our idea of them becomes. I dig how we get to know them through each other and how it even recontextualizes previous parts of their own povs? At least it was like that for me.

And! I do like the romance now!! A lot!! Kyle's pov really ties it together for me. Not least because I like him as a character, but also because it puts him on equal ground with John? We only knew Ravishan through John, and he was such.. a figure?? in John's life - a person he really likes, and we see him as such, mainly?? Idk if this makes sense.

But then we finally get them on the same page!! I like their dynamic and the development of their relationship much more than that of John and Ravishan, because now we have a fuller measure of both of them, and their histories with each other are!! They make me feel things

Also just a side note the pace is really good? Every time I think to myself that there's going to be stalling before the fairly obvious plot point, there just isn't. It feels refreshing and keeps me invested all the way through!

Tldr the rifter really makes it worth your time!

yes yes yes yes 100% agree with everything you said!!! i dont even have anything to add. the recontextualization that goes on with their shifting povs and time shifts is soooo engaging to read, i've already said a dozen times over how the non-linear structure of the story is probably my favorite element. it's genuinely one of those series where i can't believe how interesting and high quality it is, and that we get to read it!! they both have so much depth to their characters and i absolutely love how we get to see them from different angles across so many years. it really lets us love them and know them both in equal measure like you said and i love that. i adore them. one of the stories of all time, to me.

or you know what was another great book series?the rifter by ginn hale. i love that whole reincarnation/parallel universe thing and the whole concept of the rifter being like a destroyer god but not an evil one and the kahlil. so interesting

I realized that essentially all of my favorite book characters have autistic or ADHD traits. Taylor Hebert (Worm) and she's the same from the funfic "A Wand for Skitter", Murderbot ("The Murderbot Diaries" by Martha Wells; there is also a coincidence in my agenderness and grey/asexuality), Lenie Clarke and Ken Lubin (Peter Watts' rifter book series), Harry Potter and Hermione from HPMOR ("Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality" by Eliezer Yudkowsky), Miles Vorkosigan ("The Vorkosigan Saga" by Bujold), Ciaphas Cain and his loyal assistant Ferik Jurgen (Warhammer 40,000, Sandy Mitchell).

Overall, this is not surprising given my personal history of ADHD and autism. The funny thing is that I began to reflect on the topic of my own autism precisely after I read the Murderbot Diaries and came across a discussion of the character’s autistic traits. I was undermined from within by the thought, “What if all this bunch of coincidences are not just coincidences?”

Much was the same, but some things were not characteristic of autistic people, but at the same time, they were clearly not characteristic of the majority of people around me. I don’t remember the first time I heard about ADHD, but I immediately recognized some of my traits. When I read that ADHD and autism are often combined, I decided to take tests online first... and got high scores on both topics. Then, the doctor officially confirmed it for me. Bingo.

Do you have some favorite civilian outfits of Bart?

This is actually a top tier question. The answer is: ABSOLUTELY! It’s gonna be hard to choose honestly. Long post incoming

First are outfits I genuinely like. I’m a sucker for a flannel/button ups over a shirt with jeans. Very gender. I’m also a sucker for those type of striped shirts and that color combo.

The one with Preston is a favorite that I wouldn’t wear myself. I just like it’s vibe. I also like bomber jackets. The triple layers actually work here (in my opinion).

The baseball jersey one is notable as it was when Bart lost his powers during a Flash event and Max was sick. It’ll always have a sad tinge to it but I still like it. Not sure why he’s wearing a New York Yankees jersey though. Show some hometown pride, Bart.

Next are these 4. First is more of pajamas but I find it to funny not to include. A giant orange tank top that ends right above his knees. 10/10

Next is the outfit he wore as a disguise in Young Justice. I know they’re supposed to look dumb but I still count it. Few people can pull off that look and Bart isn’t one of them. Not sure who those “few people” are but eh.

I had to include Bart’s iconic first day of school outfit. I’m not sure what Ramos’ thought process was here. A lime green turtle neck with a tucked in baseball jersey? Well it was the 90’s. Can’t see it here but I only just realized on a reread that he’s wearing red and white shoes with this outfit.

Then we have another iconic outfit from when he gets the entire school to fight each other. Mostly because I dunno what the thing over his shirt is supposed to be. I’m pretty sure it’s a real thing but it looks goofy.

Lastly we have my all time favorite civilian Bart Allen outfit:

I love of everything about this outfit. The Flash shirt, the high waisted pants that are way too big on him, bowling style over-shirt, the probably unintentional scuff marks on the shoes (if they were untied it’d be even better). It’s just a top tier outfit.
