Finally A Conviction For A Cop Who Helped Kill Breonna Taylor - A former Louisville officer pleads guilty on federal charges

Finally...

One of the first cops to face federal charges in connection with the death of Breonna Taylor, a Black woman who was killed in 2020 in a botched raid by Louisville police officers, pleaded guilty on one count of conspiracy this afternoon.

Former Louisville officer Kelly Goodlett was charged for her role in a scheme in which two other officers, Joshua Jaynes and Kyle Meany, provided false information in the affidavit used to secure the no-knock warrant that preceded the hail of bullets in which Taylor died. Goodlett then met up with Jaynes after the shooting in an attempt to concoct a coverup for their fatal misdeeds, prosecutors allege. Goodlett’s conviction finally makes real calls for justice from around the country, in which Taylor’s family, activists, and concerned people around the country turned into a mantra and a hashtag: Arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor.

That call fell on deaf ears in Kentucky, where the state’s Black attorney general, Daniel Cameron, put on a sham case before a grand jury, announcing that the evidence didn’t support charges against any of the officers involved despite the fact that members of the grand jury later said that Cameron never asked or instructed them on how to return any charges directly related to Taylor’s death. The grand jury did indict former officer Brett Hankison for unloading 10 rounds into Taylor’s apartment and others from outside the building, where he couldn’t even see where he was shooting at. He was acquitted in March.

Cameron, a Republican, is now running for governor of the state, where his political affiliation would have made charging Taylor’s killers a liability among conservative voters. That left the pursuit of criminal justice in the case up to the feds. The Justice Department charged Jaynes, Meany, and Goodlett for allegedly lying and Hankison for the shots he fired. Meany was fired by Louisville Metro Police Department Chief Erika Shields on Sunday.

To this day, Myles Cosgrove, the former Louisville cop who actually fired Taylor’s kill shot, hasn’t been charged. He was fired in January 2021, a decision that was upheld after he petitioned in department hearings to get his job back.

Taylor died on March 23, 2020, when a barrage of Louisville cops burst into her apartment with a warrant seeking a man she previously dated. Taylor wasn’t a subject of the warrant nor was she still involved with the man who was. Instead, she was asleep along with her then-boyfriend, who also wasn’t a target of the warrant.

Turns out, the man the cops sought was already in police custody. Taylor’s boyfriend, who had a legally purchased gun, fired at the officers believing they were people committing a violent entry into the home; police returned fire, killing Taylor. She was 26 years old.

Rudy Giuliani, who once served as Donald Trump’s attorney, has conceded he made defamatory statements about Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss—two Black Georgia election workers—in an attempt to settle their lawsuit against him and to satisfy a judge who thought about sanctioning him.

In the Tuesday night filing, Giuliani stated he does not contest Moss and Freeman’s claims that he made slanderous statements about them following the 2020 election. The pair counted ballots in Fulton County, Ga. However, in the filing, he also stated that the false claims about vote-rigging in the 2020 presidential election were constitutionally protected speech and did not damage Freeman and Moss.

In a defamation lawsuit that was filed in 2021, the women said that they became targets of ridiculous conspiracy theories pushed by Giuliani and employees of the right-wing news network One America News. While Giuliani refuted the claims, One America News settled with Freeman and Moss for an undisclosed amount in 2022. The federal judge, Beryl A. Howell of the DC District Court, is still reviewing Tuesday’s filings from Giuliani.

On Wednesday, Howell recognized Giuliani’s concessions in the lawsuit and ordered him to pay more of Moss and Freeman’s legal fees, after he was already ordered Giuliani to pay the pair $90,000. It’s also unknown how criminal prosecutors from the Justice Department’s special counsel’s office, who have questioned Giuliani, will react to his revelations in the lawsuit.

Attorneys for Moss and Freeman will respond next week in court to several of Giuliani’s latest statements. The duo’s lead attorney Michael J. Gottlieb, a partner at Willkie, Farr & Gallagher, stated on Wednesday that Giuliani’s concessions were a “major milestone” in the case.

“Giuliani’s stipulation concedes what we have always known to be true—Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss honorably performed their civic duties in the 2020 presidential election in full compliance with the law; and the allegations of election fraud he and former-President Trump made against them have been false since day one,” he explained.

The feeling when you kick back and draw something that has just about exactly the qualities you aspired to be able to pull off when you set out on your artistic journey eons ago.

Got me thinking what it was I wanted to get my pencils to do back then. I think is was something like this. imaginary yet realistic, naturalistic without reference, sketched as if I had the subject in front of me, more 1800 than contemporary.

The BIG question now is why I mostly just do it in my spare time (although I try to pry as much spare time as possible from work). I should be doing bestiaries all day long every day.

Vegetarian Shiitake Mushroom Burger. The Root Cafe. Little Rock, Arkansas. 12.12.2023.

NOTE TO SELF: I didn't want anything to heavy, so I went with this. The mushrooms themselves were good, but I the sandwich lacks something to hold it all together -- physically, as well as culinarily speaking. Maybe I should get it with cheese. Between the garlic vinaigrette on the salad and the garlic vinaigrette on the sandwich, I was garlic vinaigrette'd out.

I miss the way I used to feel about The Root Cafe, and I still love the concept, but these menu items just aren't doing it for me anymore.

Currently ranked 9th of 11 December meals.

An Etowah County, Alabama, jail is detaining several pregnant women and new moms for allegedly using drugs while pregnant. None of the women, at least two of whom are Black, have been convicted despite being held in jail for months.
