John wakes up to a second heartbeat. His soulmate’s guide is six years overdue, and the cuddliest, friendliest dog he’s ever met, a dark brownish-red golden retriever - John calls him Scout. Dr. Vogelbaum is surprised - firstly, that the universe gave John a soulmate, and secondly, that a dog managed to trot its way into a secure location with little effort - it takes three dead scientists before they realize Scout is here to stay. Vought hates Scout until he can make a profit. Some mediocre photographer snaps a photo of John carrying Scout after he’d run through the mud; it’s on the internet in under an hour and the highest trending photo in the United States by dinnertime.

The internet dissolves into a mess overnight, and the subject of John’s soulmate is trending globally; the week before Valentine’s Day is his soulmate tour, thousands of people come along, and Scout becomes the face of the ideal guide. John feels so many things - proud when the world praises his guide, confused as Scout’s friendly demeanor makes it harder to find his soulmate, and downright murderous when a fan tries to drag Scout to her and get him to like her - Sitwell tries something similar to the latter, reaching out once to pet the dog, before getting her arm bitten. John laughs, his tone cold as Scout darts behind his legs. When the Seven is formed, the others are a mixed bag; John doesn’t care enough to pay them attention, and they do the opposite, openly gawking at Scout, eyes widening further when Scout outwardly prefers his company; they want to ask, but clam up when he glares at them, hesitant to touch the guide.

“Can’t you take me to my soulmate, already?” he asks Scout one morning; the dog tilts his head, tongue hanging out, and John swears he nods his head in response. Scout grabs his glove, and darts off with it, dodging John as he attempts to grab him; John is just about ready to throw caution to the wind when Scout stops; John doesn’t, flying directly into a tree. He’s not knocked out, but it takes a moment for the ringing to stop; when his eyes open again, you’re standing over him.

“Oh my god, Homelander, sir, are you alright?”

John never quite understood how people could just know their soulmate by sight, even with their guides, he just never understood how people were 100% certain, but now looking at you, it’s like his whole mind just screams ‘yes.’ You hold out your hand for him to take, helping him stand, even with the gloves; your touch just feels right; Scout is the happiest John has ever seen him, tail wagging fast, “Oh, hello again,” you say to him, scratching Scout just behind the ears, you turn to John with a fond teasing smile, and he knows he’s already gone. “So, I guess this means the cat’s all you?” The cat is an orange ragdoll that, according to you, has scratched, bitten, hissed, and attacked anyone who came too close to you for her liking; John’s proud to hear that you named her Mochi, and he’s less proud of that, “Mean cats need cute names,” you simply state.

“What, you’re gonna give me a cute name too, then,” he snickers.

“I don’t see why not,” you eye him for a second, pursing your lips as you think of a name, “Snookums.” His face scrunches in horror, and you laugh, “Ok, ok, that was bad. Honeybun? Pudding? Pumpkin?” You rotate through so many names, each one as sappy as the last one, John’s expressions fueling your laughter further - there’s the distinct sound of a camera shutter, but John ignores it - placing a hand over your mouth as you dissolve into giddy hysterics. “Alright, point taken,” you say, and John is acutely aware of how close he’s pulled you to him. “How about your name then? I can’t just call you Homelander forever.”

“John,” he says.

“John. Johnathan,” You try the words on your tongue, “Jonnie, Johnny Boy.” You shake your head, “Yeah, I’ll stick with John.” You smile, giving John your name, “Nice to meet you, John.”

(1/2) If demons are of similar nature to rift-creatures, does Keith have any level of tolerance for that kind of energy, the kind that is so dangerously corrupting to most mortal people? Are demon-contracts a safer and more stable cousin of the corrupted magic Haggar uses? Would having demons around that on occasion possess people have let humanity build defenses against that kind of energy? (If they had, Shiro would likely know about it. Would that offer any protection against Haggar's magic?..

Great questions!

To start off, yes- Shiro does recognize that there's something... inherently familiar about the energy that clings to Haggar. He doesn't want to go so far as to say they are demons- they're in space after all, but it wouldn't surprise him if there were creatures similar to them out in the universe, a belief that is only reinforced after he meets Allura and Coran (who have more in common with humans than they have differences, at the end of the day).

And yeah, basically this is the one area where humanity's magic would actually have a leg up on Altean alchemy, because whereas the rift creatures were only 'recently' discovered (from Allura's perspective), humans have known about them for their entire history. Their entire magic system was developed around demons- both to use them and to exorcise them. I think this is something Haggar would (subconsciously) recognize, and that's part of the reason why Shiro's arm was replaced in this AU- like a shackle to hold that threat back.

(Does it stop Shiro from forging his first ever familiar contract in deep space? No. No it does not.)

I think contracts are a 'safer' way to harness the power, though 'safety' is debatable when it comes at the cost of one's soul half of the time. But generally you get what you ask for with no hidden surprises! Familiar contracts are even safer than that, giving form and physical presence to demons who otherwise cannot obtain a corporal form of their own.

Keith might be keeping secrets, but Shiro decides that this information is vital to the rest of the paladins and is honest about his own bloodline and what that has allowed him to determine about Haggar. It definitely cements Keith's decision to stay quiet, though!

(also yes, Keith can resist the rift creatures.)

We got a HUGE Dev Insight post today full of the nerdy detail I love reading about. I'm gonna try and point out the big stuff and summarize the longer wordy bits.

WEAPON BALANCING

This first part is just going over weapon Usage Rate/Kill Rate pre and post mid season balance patch across both high skill and all-skill lobbies. TLDR is Immortal was top pick in high skill lobbies despite not performing higher than intended. Top performers were Hand Cannons and Pulse Rifles (Bungie once again proving airmchair dev pvpers wrong). Post patch Hand Cannons and Immortal stayed the same and Pulses went down a bit.

Interestingly, across all skill lobbies, Auto Rifles were some of the highest performers. Both in Usage and Kills. Hand Cannons, however, were still the most picked. Peak shooting and playing cover are ubiquitous to higher skill tiers, preventing autos from becoming too effective in those particular lobbies. Thus, the Hand Cannons come out. Really neat stuff. Check out the graphs on the OP.

SEASON 22 WEAPON BALANCING (the one about the Range rework)

Double Special will no loner drop more Heavy than intended

Although I will say, unless they addressed how much special you can get off Heavy kills, I don't see this changing the effectiveness of double special too much. We'll have to wait and see.

Range. Range and Zoom are being decoupled. Mid Range options are being brought closer together and down in regards to effective range and damage falloff. At 100 Range stat: Hand Cannons, Autos, and Sidearms are going up. Pulse Rifles and SMGs are going down. Bows and Scouts will remain the same. Several exotics received hand tuned adjustments (i.e. Ace of Spades (when Memento Mori is active) damage falloff range penalty has been increased to 15%, more on the OP).

Weapon Archetype Adjustments

Hand Cannons. On top of the range buff they will receive:

General

Increased reload speed at 0 stat by 15%.

PvE Damage

Increased damage against minor combatants (red bars) by 20%.

Increased damage against major combatants (orange bars) by 75%.

Heavy Burst

Changed Warden's Law to be the first member of a new sub-family, Heavy Burst

Fires a 2-round burst.

Bows are having their projectile adjusted to be more reliable.

SMGs. 750s have been 720s this whole time (visual UI bug) and will show the appropriate RPM now.

Sidearms. Aggressives are receiving a bodyshot damage nerf. 32 to 30.

Pulse Rifles. BXR is back to 20 zoom

Shotguns. Please use The Comedian (UI bug fixed).

Fusions. Fixed a bug with crafted fusions, charge times, and damage

Heavy Wave Frames. Made it harder to kill yourself with.

Swords. This is an enormous rework. The TL;DR is Sword Guard is about to be way more effective. No longer drains energy while guarding. provides 82.5% to 95% damage resist (whoa). Has duration increased across the board and increased movement speed while guarding. Huge.

Exotics:

You can now use the bayonet on the Monte Carlo (new catalyst)

Verglas Curve works with Fissures now.

DMT and Quicksilver got bug fixes.

Two-Tailed Fox + catalyst now fires a 3 rounds of rockets instead of 2 (with an extra rocket in the 2nd)

Le Monarque. Hoo boy. Is being converted to a Lightweight bow. Damage is going down. Rate of Fire is going up. Damage over Time effect duration down from 3 to 1.75 seconds. Same DoT damage as before (more per tick, 6 ticks). Poison damage INCREASED 50% in PvE. Net buff for PvE. Obvious nerf for PvP.

Vex Mythoclast's RPM is being reduces to 360. Increased damage against minor combatants (red bars) and major combatants (orange bars) by 25%

Tommy's Matchbook scorch stacks adjusted but overall the same (w/Ashes)

Touch of Malice got some big changes. The Blight will now stun Unstoppable Champs and deals Arc damage. The Final Round will no longer kill the player and instead hold you at 1HP and deals 20% more damage in PvE. Self damage reduced from 10 to 7. Health on multikills up from 30 to 75 and now functions like Unrelenting. Excellent excellent buffs. The Scout Rifle Enthusiast Club will be ecstatic.

Cloud Strike will be less effective vs players. Lightning strike kill distance reduced.

Wicked Implement also getting some buffs. The timing window for Creeping Attrition has been increased from 3.5 seconds to 4.5 seconds. You can now also active Tithing Harvest by destroying Stasis crystals. The catalyst now gets Headstone (yay). I'm personally very excited about this.

Perk Changes

Bipod is getting it's nerf to damage reduced.

Envious Assassin's weird timer has been removed. Much easier to activate now.

Over-Under now does bonus damage to Woven Mail, combatant shields, and the overshields provided from Dark Cabal and Lucent Moths. Still not a good perk.

Under Pressure. Too good on Fusions. 25% nerf to accuracy scalar.

Shoot-To-Loot works with explosive rounds now.

Bug fixes to Valiant Charge, Ambush, and Explosive Light.

Chill Clip will now take 3 shots to freeze. Slow stacks reduced from 60 to 40. Big nerf. RIPtide amirite?

CRAFTING ECONOMY CHANGES

They're essentially buffing how much weapon XP you get across the whole game. Neomuna red borders will be easier to farm.

And that's about it as far as what you need to know. Some very very nice changes in there. Very excited about seeing two Exotic Scouts getting substantial buffs. Range rework seems like a net positive change. I suspect Scouts may be more useful now that their ranges just got a lot more rigid. I hope the Hand Cannon buff feels substantial. I've been itching to use them in PvE again for a long time. The insight on PvP usage was very interesting to see. I love this kind of stuff but it can seem a little dense in places. Hope this helps!

Another thing I would like to work on is my atmosphere! I hope to add more atmospherism into my writing, as some of my favorite authors do (a great example being @anya-dev and @manonamora-if, especially their game DOLOS)!

your eyebrows raise at her words as the both of you go to leave the back room. shutting the door your hand eagerly pulls your phone from your back pocket, opening up a new contact and handing it to her. “I would love a next time, though i’d like to take you on a date first.” phoenix nudges you playfully before adding her contact to your phone, sending herself a text message so she has your number.

“I’d like that too.”

both of you slip into the bathroom to quickly freshen up, trying to appear as if you both hadn’t been gone for half an hour with each other. you share one last kiss before phoenix slips out first, taking her lead a few minutes later.

“phoenix where the hell did you go? did you die in there or something?” payback was immediately on her the moment she got back to the group. phoenix rolls her eyes and swipes one of the beers that had just been put down on the table, fanboy groaning at the loss of his drink.

“no, just got preoccupied.” she shrugs.

payback seems to somewhat buy the excuse. however, Jake doesn’t believe it at all. From his spot by the table he had watched the two of you, noticing you wiping your face with the back of your hand before resuming your spot behind the wall. he barks out a laugh, taking a sip of his beer while the rest of the group quickly turns to him.

“preoccupied,” he snorts, eyeing phoenix. “ yeah that’s the word.” phoenix ignores jake’s teasing, dragging payback, fanboy, and bob (who had shown up while she was gone) to another round of pool to distract them. while her backseater takes a shot she glances over to you, catching your gaze. you flash her a smile, adding a wink.
