REVIEW OF...
🐙🐠 DEEPLIGHT🐠🐙
I dived into this book when it was chosen for a buddy read in a book group I belong to and am glad I did, as it’s a great read. It is set on a chain of islands called the Myriad, whose inhabitants are haunted by the memory of their dead gods – huge sea creatures with insatiable appetites. The main character is a fourteen year-old orphan called Hark who lives by his wits and is frequently landed in hot water by his friend, Jelt. When the story starts, Hark is talking to a rich merchant as they watch a submarine arrive with some salvaged remains of one of the gods. He hopes to con the merchant out of some money, but their conversation is interrupted by Jelt, who insists that Hark go with him immediately to take part in some nefarious scheme. Things don’t go according to plan and Hark is  caught by the governor’s guards. He is then auctioned off as a slave.
Hark does his best to adjust to his new life, working in a sanctuary for the surviving priests of the gods, but it isn’t long before Jelt comes to tell him about another unmissable money-making opportunity.  Again Hark lets himself be talked into helping, and again things go badly. More thrilling adventures follow and Hark ends up having to fight for the very survival of the Myriad, aided by two new friends – an elderly priest called Quest and Selphin, a young smuggler who lost her hearing years earlier in a diving accident.
The book is an easy read with a good balance of adventure and character interaction. Hardinge has a flair for building tension and there are some nice twists. I really got a feel for the Myriad and loved Hardinge’s vision of the sea as a fantastical otherworld. In her own words, she tortures the laws of physics into horrific new shapes, but she does it so well, it’s sometimes hard to tell where reality stops and fantasy begins. The concept of the gods is also intriguing.
DEEPLIGHT is aimed at the YA market, but there is plenty that will appeal to older audiences as well. The toxic dynamic between Hark and Jelt is skillfully handled and interesting questions are raised about faith and how much is justifiable in the name of the greater good. The characters are another strength. Often in YA books, people are either good or bad, but here they are a mix of the two, which feels much more realistic. They learn and grow during the course of the book, and even when we don’t agree with what they are doing, we understand their motivations. Hark is especially well done – flawed and likeable at the same time - but my favorite character was Selphin. She’s feisty, clever and has some of the best lines in the book, like when Hark asks her if they can get out of a shack where they have been imprisoned and she signs back sarcastically, “Yes… There’s a secret door. I just stay in here because I love it.” Anyone who underestimates her because of her lack of hearing does so at their peril, which is very refreshing.
So what didn’t I like? The answer is not much. A few of the descriptions could perhaps have benefitted from a little more detail,  but I know that publishers like to keep the text quite uncluttered in YA books and my imagination was always able to fill in the blanks. It might also have been good if we could have seen a bit more of the nice side of Jelt to give us a better understanding of why Hark is friends with him, but again, this was a minor point. Overall reading this book was a magical experience which I would heartily recommend.

"Referred to as "the Warden" by Selhine literature, Quetzal is the eldest of the rumored "Guardian Bakugan", created by the legendary warrior Oberus to protect the Ventus civilization, the Selhine. Out of all of the Guardians, Quetzal is the most present one, in which not only there is a gigantic array of both documentation and oral tradition provided by the friendlier Selhine, there are also various reports of actual eye witnesses to this ancient creature. Perhaps due to his age and his connection to the Warrior of Kindness, Quetzal is seen to be the wisest and most caring out of his kin, taking an almost fatherly role to those that had found his lair or searched for his aid. Said lair is said to be hidden in between time and space, with its only trail being a specific, fragile current of ever-changing winds. To a creature who can innately fly those currents, this is seldom a problem." ----Zoe Abner

Selhine chick time~ Pixel/Pixie, and the tiny green decorational feather on her head. She's 5, with darkus pawbands (that were too small to colour... whoops.)
Notes on hatchlings: they only start with their tail fluff and paws- they don't have hair until after hatching, and their pawbands don't develop until they become chicks (it takes 2 years to develop the pawband.)

Some more selhine, all of which have been seen before, except the tiny one.
Baby selhine (chicks) can walk almost immediately, but their balance is a bit iffy. They usually learn to dance before they learn how to properly walk. They only have prefeather fluff for a tail, and it's the same for their wings.
Chicks are also terrible at temperature maintenence, and so wear long legwarmers to keep warm.

Don't you love designing aliens? I do! These are the selhine, a race of feathery winged humanoids from the planet Scoros (which is mostly forested mountains.)
They’re able to fly through strong winds, as a ventus bakugan would. Technically paw-footed, they’re generally playful and peaceful, but are more prepared for war than the neathians.
The strangest thing about the selhine, is that the pads and band on their paws are coloured to their attribute, and change should they change guardian bakugan- they seem connected to the attributes in some way. Most selhine use ventus bakugan.

A little more sketch than drawing, but I imagine the selhine's royal family (the Tsavori family) is both respected out of admiration, and functional/happy.
There's;
Queen Tempera, who is the reigning monarch,
her husband King Ochre,
the crown princess Mosaic,
the prince Vinyl (who, despite his wings, is completely fine),
and the baby triplets, Paper (green and purple), Cloth (green and orange), and Vellum (red. She's counted as the leader between her and her equally tiny brothers.)
The triplets use ventus, Mosaic and Vinyl use haos, Ochre uses pyrus, and Tempera uses darkus.
Queen Tempera actually has three bakugan she's partnered with; two of them hold onto her veils, the third hides under the veil out of shyness. All of them are darkus.

The selhine are very friendly, for an alien race, and have their guardian bakugan’s attribute displayed in the colour of their paw pads. The way this happens is through imprinting.
The selhine have coloured cheeks (ranging from purple to yellow, through red). When a selhine wishes to imprint something, in one of two ways, they rub their cheek against it, as a cat would scent something.
The two types of imprinting are as follows, and depends on what is being imprinted;
Familial. This imprint essentially lets a selhine recognise their families, blood or chosen, by a sort of sixth sense. This imprint has to be repeated every four or so years. Chicks tend to try and imprint on the neck. While it’s not clear why, it’s probably so they’re guarded when imprinting, as the neck is vulnerable to damage.
Guardian. This imprint is specific to bakugan. This is the imprint that causes the paw pads and paw band to shift colour. Curiously, this even works on mechanical bakugan, despite being machinery.
Imprinting seems to be the replacement for the switch code in selhine, but some do develop it overtime, especially if they don’t change guardian often.

Conversation
Me: Has a deka bakugan, and several B2 bakugan
Me: Also has a race of aliens, where the baby form is the size of a doll
Me: Also has a Belle doll
Me: Plans for the baby form to be small enough for B2 bakugan to look like Dekas next to them (I can fit one deka per hand)
Me: Realises B2 bakugan look like Dekas, but twice as big, in comparison to the Belle doll I'm using for reference (a double deka?)
Me: "..."
Me: "Oh so they're tiny with a capital tiny..."

Every time I think of a season in it’s general entirety, I think How would I have done this if I was a writer on the team, while also having the final say in any and all writing decisions? The answer is usually just *picks up Drago and throws him a far enough distance away where he can’t win the season by just existing for any amount of time*
#Always throw your dragonoids onto a plush surface when doing this#They go splat a bit if they land against a hard surface. yeah they'll bounce back to shape like a stress ball but it makes them upset#bakugan#This is about. several things.#Ironically MS1 is the one I'd change the least I think?#GI. MS2. and also NV. All will be butchered so I can stitch them back together in a way that makes more sense to me#BB is where I'm unsure on what to do. ik what I want to do with the dragon twins#aka do more with their whole concept because Why Are There Only Two Known White Ones Other Than For Plot Device#but the rest of it... I'm not sure#I'm still reeling slightly from a disastrous Stellaris game with my brother. my neighbours hated me and then one of them decided to try#and eat my tiny space empire for breakfast. They halved my size and I was surrounded so I couldn't grow at all#but it Does remind me. I should make a reference sheet for the Selhine#If you saw Isa's guardian bakugan (Quetzal. Tiamat. Akupara etc)#then you might be aware that we added four other races to the attribute pile#since I've only ever mentioned Allurians and Selhine here#We also have Hestians. Musteles. Hyrrokkin. and Qhixil#(I've always pronounced that as Chee-sheel for ref)#so I have them to make ref sheets for too...#I don't say that despairingly I love all of the aliens I've made.#Some more than others because cute birb people have priority in my brain due to being made first#ANYWAY THAT'S ENOUGH OF MY RAMBLING
