For Fun: Here's My Favorite Disney Songs That Were Deleted/Changed In The Final Film (Part 1)
Tumblr media
Hi, I'm The Plot MacGuffin. If you know me, you know I'm a massive fucking Disney nerd. And because I'm never satisfied, I often go searching for Disney rarities and behind the scenes stuff whenever I can. And fortunately, since Disney never throws anything away, sometimes demos or full recordings of deleted songs from their films slip through the cracks. (occasionally with visuals to accompany them). This list will take a look at some of my personal favorite songs, or just the ones I find interesting.
Of course, probably the first and most famous deleted song is the "Soup" sequence from Snow White. It had already been mostly animated before being deleted. They apparently still tried to find places to use it, even reuse it in another movie down the line, but then never did.
youtube
The "Clair De Lune" sequence from Fantasia was fully animated and scored, but ended up being cut for time. The animation was reused for the "Blue Bayou" segment of the later film Make Mine Music. Eventually, it was restored to Fantasia in the 90s, but current versions just list it as an extra feature.
youtube
Alice in Wonderland was in and out of development a bunch of times, and songs and plot points were introduced and cut like crazy. A more dedicated Jabberwocky sequence and a song for the Cheshire Cat were cut. They explore both in this short documentary below.
youtube
The songs in The Jungle Book were originally meant to be written by Terry Gilkyson. However, he wanted it to be closer to the tone of the original novel, which Walt Disney wanted to move away from. The Sherman Brothers were then brought on to write the new songs for the movie, but the one song Gilkyson wrote that remains in the final film is funnily enough, "The Bare Necessities". Gilkyson's other songs were a bit of a slog, but that one obviously stood out. The original version below was certainly well...something. (Sung here in this demo by Thurl Ravenscroft of "Tony the Tiger" and "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" fame)
youtube
"The Chimpanzoo" was meant for Mary Poppins. It tells an...interesting story, but was probably wisely cut. I think the Sherman Brothers may have tried to reuse it in Bedknobs and Broomsticks, but I could be wrong there.
youtube
Onto the Disney Renaissance, Ursula's song was originally more of a tango. Composer Alan Menken released this demo for "Silence is Golden"
youtube
Both "Fathoms Below" and "Poor Unfortunate Souls" also had whole lyrics cut from the final film that explain more of the characters and their relationships
youtube
youtube
The most famous deleted song from Beauty and the Beast is "Human Again". The song shows Belle and the Beast's relationship progressing as the objects get excited to be saved from the curse. The song is sweet, but its original version was meant to be almost 9 minutes long. It just raised too many questions over how long Belle was in the castle, and where Maurice and Gaston were as it seemed a full year passed. It was replaced by the much more compact "Something There" in the final movie.
youtube
However, the song was later reused in the Broadway version to help pad the show, and was later reanimated and voiced into the original movie (albeit abridged) for the IMAX special edition. Most current HD versions edit this out however. I like the song, but "Something There" basically covers the same info much more efficiently.

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! The advent of electricity has allowed for so, so, so many inventions and innovations to our daily lives. As a lover of inventions, innovation, and human progress, Walt Disney wanted to make a whole section of Disney dedicated to literal lightning in a bottle called "Edison Square". That didn't happen but Walt would take a lot of Edison Square's ideas and incorporate them into an attraction for the 1964 New York World's Fair called "Progressland". When the World's Fair ended. "Progressland" would be moved to Disneyland and then Walt Disney World under a new name that was cooler and didn't sound as much like "Tomorrowland", The Carousel of Progress. The attraction itself is not what most people would call a carousel i.e. a spinning platform with a bunch of rideable animals that bob up and down. It is built on a spinning platform though, just one that houses a theater. Six separate theater boxes to be exact, rotating multiple audiences through each show scene of a single family enjoying new-fangled technologies in four different decades from phonographs at the turn of the 20th century to voice activated appliances in 1993. Yeah…sadly, for a show about the wonders of the future, this attraction is rather dated, having not received a major since that year. Still, it definitely maintains that spirit of innovation and the promise of a better tomorrow and that has allowed it to endure for all these years. So long in fact, that it holds the record for the longest-running stage show in the history of American theater. Quite impressive (though less so considering all the actors are animatronics)! I do hope it gets that major refurbishment some time in the future but even without it, I'll still say that Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress is still worthy of being called wonderful It's a great big beautiful tomorrow indeed. P.S. Speaking of which, I also love the song for this attraction titled "There's A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow". If "When You Wish Upon A Star" is the theme song for the Walt Disney Company, then this is the theme song for the man who founded it. Optimism is a pretty powerful thing.

Yep, these two are besties and brothers in my main headcanon.
Mr. Hector J. Peabody was interested in time travel long before he became a father. When he was a puppy, he built what was the first prototype of the WABAC, known only to him as his Way Back Wristwatch, or WBW for short, which he used to travel back in time to further feed his growing interest.
The first era he wound up in was the 1800s, in San Ricardo, a town resting on the desert hills of Spain. There, he met Puss and Humpty fiddling with some sort of winged contraption, which sparked further interest. Peabody walked over to them and asked what they were working on. Humpty first mistook Peabody's genuine interest for a prank. But when Peabody walked around it for further inspection and praised Humpty's mechanics on his glider, the attention to detail, and the brilliant influence of Leonardo da Vinci.
🚫 IF YOU DO NOT LIKE THIS FRIENDSHIP, PLEASE DON’T COMMENT 🚫
Humpty was taken back by his compliment and told Peabody that he was the only one who spotted the Leonardo da Vinci inspiration. Humpty then introduced himself and his non-verbal friend. Humpty then asked Peabody if he was interested in helping him and his friend test out his glider. Peabody accepted Humpty's invitation.

Maddie: He tried to burn down the school.
Buck: I didn’t burn down the school! I played with matches - that’s an entirely different thing.
Chimney: *side-eyes a sleeping Jee* This isn’t an inherited Buckley trait, is it?

My favorite part about the first Trials of Apollo book was when they talked about the campers working out. I mean, YES!! I love working out, that was so fun to read about what the demigods do. You mean you drag the entire camp out of bed to go on a file mile run?? And do push ups and sit ups?? WOAH real camp life. Also I am biased because I am a distance runner so this was #relatable

sherm only knowing his brother Stanford since his twin died when he was too young to remember. only after Ma and Pa died did he get to meet Stanford. they'd always call him "nerdy" but "weird and ingenious" was a much better fit. huh. he might've been smart once, but Sherm is sure capitalism beat it out of him, as it does all of us.
all he knows about Stanley is that he was a troublemaker and messed up Stanford's college decision. Pa called him some choice words, but, then again, those had been directed at Sherm, too, so who is he to believe what Pa says?
still, memories of a soft voice and clean-shaved chin holding him close and humming short songs would tug on the back of his mind. it wasn't his brother Stanford, but Sherm was told Stanley left before he was born. was that true? because the images of his childhood didn't seem to match with Stanford. the thought only crossed his mind for a few minutes before pulling up to Stanford's shack out in Oregon, after that it was all banter and he forgot all about it.
decades later, his grandkids have to sit their Grandpa Sherman down. there are two of them. twins, again- it runs in the family, after all. ten minutes later, he has two brothers alive, not just one.
despite his old age, he hauls himself up to Gravity Falls with his wife. when he gets there, two old men (hah! that's rich, calling them old- when you're a granddad yourself, Sherm). but this time a hearty chuckle went straight into the depths of his childhood. toddling around the house, learning to read. the missing brother, Stanley hadn't grown up any, and neither had Stanford, seems like (something else Pines brothers have in common).
without realizing, he's already walking up the uneven wooden steps and a voice- the one he hasn't been able to shake- the one he didn't realize he's been looking for his whole life- his brother Stanford is there.
he cries into Stanford's woolen turtleneck until the darkness escorts them inside.
