Interesting commentary about how most people will identify with victims/victimhood while feeling discomfort when others identify with perpetrators, especially given the fact we live in societies (at least the one I’m in and the one that book was written in) that habitually materially revile victims on every level while championing and supporting perpetrators of certain violence.

2010 Australian Grand Prix - Jenson Button(ft. Robert Kubica & Felipe Massa)
#this was genuinely a race of attrition in the back. 10/24 cars dnfed and i think all but 2 were technical problems#this was a really exciting race tbh i really had no clue what the podium would be#its weird cause i knew seb mark and nando didnt win it but i was so confused how they were gonna lose it? and then it was like OH JENSE OFC#jense was incredible in this race ah what a comeback#everyone thought he made a huge mistake switching to slicks so early on and then it turned out he was the strat goat#and it makes it better cause it wasnt even a call from the team! it was literally his call!!#as we all know hes a god in the wet and it was so admirable and brave of him to make such a bold call for himself and have it work out#the way he has such dominance and performance in wet races(ex canada 2011) is forever so impressive and cool to me#also!!! this race really proves to me why rly i like 2010. really close racing BUT ALSO:#its so sick that both nando and jense won their first/second race with their new team against their teammates who have been there longer#like to have both of them win with the same prestige is so satisying and emotional for me#and god i got flashbacks to aus 2009 seeing him standing on the car. its cool he won melbourne back to back#but also. this post race honestly sucked. bad tv direction bad lighting(not in their control tbf) i felt like they showed nothing well ah :#tho my fav gif is where felipe is standing on his tippy toes and jense bends down sjakjf#jenson button#robert kubica#felipe massa#f1#formula 1#2010 australian gp#we do a little bit of f1

always sunny and succession sharing a fanbase is something that doesn’t really make sense until youve seen both shows and then you kinda stand back and go “yeah wait that tracks”

i remember watching boardwalk empire and yknow it’s a show about actual gangsters and criminals during the american prohibition era. downright despicable people committing crimes from the very light to the especially heinous. and yet, and yet, outside of the tumblr bubble (which still had an active bwe fandom at the time), i’d come across thread after thread of why margaret thompson or gillian darmody or daughter maitland or lucy danziger or freaking billie kent was Actually the Worst Character on the show. when willie was Right There. people will always find a reason to uwu-ify the guys and dismiss the women as ‘annoying’. every time.

Kinda vaguely regret not watching the Emmy's because the whole Sunny cast looked sooo good and my eyeballs would've been glued to the screen just for them before glazing over for the rest of the presentations, but I couldn't break my never watching tv award shows streak... also, I forgor

I can understand that romance may not be the core of a show but I think that this wierd aversion people have to romance in TV may be blinding to them to some pretty obvious displays of romantic coding in the show’s script and visual language

Have you watched Rome (HBO)? If yes what's your opinion on it?
I've watched some of it, but to be honest I didn't really like it. They got things like how society operated in that time, and I think Ciaran Hinds is an incredible actor and did his best with the material he had, and if you just want a good drama and don't know anything about the period and the actual history that went on, you'll probably like it. Plus, James Purefoy was genuinely perfect casting. It's why I wish that the show was better than it was.
Problem is, I do know the history. I know the history quite well, because the general fall of the Republic and rise of the Empire is an incredibly interesting time and Augustus is one of my favorite people to read about, from a historical perspective he's fascinating. And the show bungles a lot in that regard. I've never been a particular fan of "we're going to invent these fictitious characters and make them important to the historical narrative" type things, and the combining of characters caused some major problems for me personally (combining Atia Balba with Fulvia to create the show's version of Atia was very annoying to me personally, considering how at odds it is to the historical Atia Balba), and just in general a lot of the characters felt very shallow and like they were crafted more out of a pop culture understanding of who these people were rather than actually examining them historically. Like, ooh Cleopatra is a sexually voracious and seductive minx and Octavian is a monstrous little viper, how incredibly novel, never been done before. Not like the reality of Cleopatra as someone who wasn't very attractive but was so intelligent and charismatic that she seemed leagues better than any other woman, but still prideful and stubborn enough to let it be her downfall is more interesting than cokewhore but make it Hellenistic. Not like Octavian as an incredibly smart person and brilliant politician whose complicated family life created a situation that had him latch onto Caesar as a father figure (and Caesar himself having lost a child shortly before they started getting close allowing that latching to be entirely mutual) and who started his journey to power as a personal revenge quest and whose litany of personal tragedies at a young age created the circumstances that allowed him to make colder and colder decisions for the betterment of himself and his family and his country is more interesting than wimpy deviant who can't fight. IDK, they made Livia marginally more two-dimensional than most other pop culture portrayals of her (I, Claudius your sins are numerous and shan't be forgiven), but that's about it. From someone who's read a lot about all of these people and has consistently found that who they actually were is leagues more interesting and creatively inspiring than anything anyone could actually make up, the show being composed entirely of preconceived notions with some sprinkling of "this is what I remember from Shakespeare's Roman plays" just did not do it for me at all.
Also, Agrippa/Octavia is a fucking cop out and anyone who writes it is a genuine coward. Like, you cannot tell me that out of the two siblings, the relationship you find the most interesting is the one he had with Octavia, when Agrippa and Octavian were friends since they were twelve and were completely and reciprocally so incredibly devoted to each other that it almost defies description and beggars belief. Agrippa never once tried to grab power even though he absolutely could have and was perfectly happy being nothing more than Octavian's right hand man until the day he died. Octavian's first ever political act, the thing that kickstarted his entire career, was asking Caesar of his own volition to not kill Agrippa's brother (it's complicated) and Caesar saying yes entirely because it was Octavian who asked, not only showing how loyal Octavian was to his friends but also essentially binding the two of them together for life. It was a forty year relationship of the most insanely codependent friendship of all time, either get with the program and make it homoerotic or just admit you have no talent and wanna hetify it.

Shiv pregnancy subplot is extra annoying me because I’m watching succ concurrently w/ yeIIowjackets and on that show the pregnancy subplot written by women is intentionally like, the most over-the-top insane melodrama (stranded in the canadian wilderness.. dying, pregananonat, she won’t tell her best friend who the father is bc she was cheating with her boyfriend, but wait it gets worse), meanwhile succ writers are constructing the most boring, predictable melodrama around a pregnancy- which they only shoehorned in bc the actress was pregnant- and are asking to be taken seriously

guys do we think the show created by two men with mostly men on the writing and production staff that has men as almost every single one of its main characters about the specific mental struggles of a man who is a war veteran in a genre targeted towards men is a show that is targeted to men or not

I don't get why Hollywood is constantly remaking speculative fiction series where the author is a transphobic asshole or that have racist elements in it or where they have to forcibly shoehorn a diverse cast because the original cast in the book is only white people...
When all these problems can be solved by adapting Ursula K. LeGuin!

I don't know how to verbalize this just yet, but Heathers: the Musical and Batman (2022) said the same thing.
#batman and Heathers spoilers ahead#something something giving previously unknown people praise and a platform for dangerous rhetoric is what makes them dangerous#I've been thinking constantly the past three days about the ideological differences between the original Heather movie#and the Heathers musical#and at whose feet the blame for things like mass shootings gets lain#bc the original movie says it's one dangerous and manipulative mastermind#and a little bit blames Veronica for allowing herself to be manipulated so easily#whereas the musical says he had these ideas but it never dawned on him to act on them until they started gaining him prestige and attention#and even support from others#which gradually encouraged him to continue escalating#and Batman explores this same idea in a different way#and I'm so happy that they show the Riddler's meltdown when it turns out his idol disagrees with him#and that he actually will not be remembered and will fade into obscurity#same energy as JD trying to turn the failed spectacle at the school into a love ballad and something done in Veronica's honir#*honor#and she rejects it#GOD Batman is shaping up to be so much better than I dared to hope though#especially since I was SO worried that the thing in the beginning with Bruce ignoring the accountants would be a throwaway thing#CULPABILITY#also I really feel like the director understood Batman when the Riddler said ''it doesn't matter if we unmask you bc this is who you are''#Nolanverse missed the point on that so hard#tbh a lot of elements of this also feel so much closer to a version of the script I'd read by a director whose name I forget rn#between Schumacher being dismissed and Nolan being brought on#it was R-rated so they dismissed it#but it had SO MANY great ideas that I am so glad are brought up here#(yeah that's right you didn't realize I have a Batman hyperfixation too)#(Multitudes Bitch)#heathers#batman#not les mis
