Deep Diving: The Snuts Interviewed
Scottish band on seizing independence, their new album, and touring with Louis Tomlinson...
[…]
As they get ready for the release of ‘Millennials’, their second studio album, songwriter, producer and frontman Jack Cochrane talks to Clash about doing things differently this time, creative freedom and health, Louis Tomlinson and how he wants to see changes for young bands and artists in Scotland.
Talking of being on stage. How close did you get close to Louis Tomlinson?
We’ve done a support tour with Louis Tomlinson, we loved this opportunity. It really gave us a chance to get in front of people we wouldn’t necessarily be in front of in a live environment. It’s a different type of fan, our music translated well towards that. We’ve done tours with him over the past couple of years, we know him well.
He comes up to Glasgow for his shows, and we’ll go and watch football. He’s a good guy. Quite private. It’s funny because he been in the pop world, but deep down his roots are in indie guitar music, that’s what he is making. He’s fun guy to be around, and for us it’s great to see how others do things.
What did you take away after sharing stage and spending time with Tomlinson?
There’s been a confidence shift in terms of being onstage that we picked up on tour. The idea of taking control, sometimes I felt like we were always trying to part of the crowd and never wanted to be the centre of the attention. So being in control, having a stage presence, being able a walk on and be confident enough to do what you are meant to do up there. Definitely learned lots, we got so much better after those tours.

The West Lothian band's new label venture Happy Artist Records seeks to do away with punishing demands for musicians to "milk fans" and make endless TikTok videos. As they return with a new song – and a Reading & Leeds appearance – the band tell NME why now was the time for change.
By Tilly Foulkes 23rd August 2023
Emerging from West Lothian back in 2015, The Snuts were set to be guitar music’s freshest triumph from the beginning. A string of successful singles and their self-produced EP ‘The Matador’ caught the eyes of major label Parlophone (The Beatles, Lily Allen, Babyshambles), who signed them in 2018. After two releases – both rated 4-stars by NME – they decided to walk away and form their own label: Happy Artist Records.
“When we got signed, we were young, and the landscape of music was completely different,” bassist Callum Wilson explains to NME ahead of their sold-out homecoming shows in Glasgow’s SWG3. Joined by vocalist and guitarist Jack Cochrane, they tell us of the pressure they were under to adapt their marketing strategies to gain success.
“The way the label worked was that they had a marketing team, a digital team… they had all these people to help you to get your music out there. Then as TikTok started to rise, all these things got stripped away from us.”
TikTok – and the demands that comes with maintaining a profile there – is a recurring issue artists have confronted since the app’s boom in popularity.
“Your life needs to be marketed, basically, and we were struggling with that for a while,” Wilson continues. “We went to a meeting to talk about [our upcoming] record and we got promptly told that the music doesn’t matter. It was strictly a TikTok planning session. Which is quite hard as an artist, when you put so much into what you’ve created… and [then] it needs to get stripped down to a one minute sound bite for a social media platform that, chances are, is gonna die in ten years.”

Louis tweet it for the second time his support to buy the album Millennials, The Snuts are hoping to get to No.1 in the UK but they are now independent with their own record label Happy Artist Records. This means less money to invest in promo, less radio support because is not behind a big label etc. They posted in twitter that if is possible to someone to buy the Itunes album to reach the no.1 they would appreciate it. The album is amazing, if you can go buy it here. If you can't buy it, stream it here.
Below is the message of The Snuts from twitter, read it if you can:

Hi Gina.. sometime i wish i could see what goes in your thought process, in a good way!!!When i read that snuts comments i thought oh okay and moved on but read your tag about it being ‘An interesting descriptor’, i was like whatttt??
Well, they say they know him well. When you see Louis from the outside, “Private” is not at all how I’d describe him. Fun, loud, boisterous, mischievous… all of those fit. Many have described him as kind, generous, thoughtful. His opening acts have mostly commented on his ability to keep up with them (or outdo them) in the partying department. I just found it interesting that this person would use “private” as the chosen descriptor. I guess it just made me circle back to feeling like this persona Louis has on tour is more of an act than anything else.
Or maybe he just doesn’t trust The Snuts and that’s why they think he’s private. 😆

It was kind of over tunes? The first album campaign we were sitting like "How are we gonna get number one and stuff?" and then just scrolling through twitter and the dms went up and it was Louis Tomlinson had dm'ed us like "Oh, I love the album" and I was like "Woah, I can't believe that!" and then we just got talking over that and he put a festival on and he booked us and then we got chatting to him and from there it just kinda snowballed! We realised that our views on music weren't actually that far apart, although we came from completely different background originally...[host says: eh, both in bands!] Well, that's it, both in bands. [host says: rock band, boyband, we can blur the lines] One's slightly bigger. It's been great, the shows are great, man. He's a really cool guy!
