The Social Dilemma: Dark Side of Social Media
Tumblr media
We’re living in a world where scrolling through social media feeds has become as habitual as breathing. The eye-opening Netflix documentary “The Social Dilemma” emerges as a cautionary tale that uncovers the hidden realities behind our favourite online platforms. It delves into the depths of the social media abyss, exploring the dark side of social media and the invisible strings that pull at the minds and hearts of users worldwide. As we become entangled in the web of likes, comments, shares, subscriptions and retweets, it is imperative to reflect on the potentially harmful consequences they can have on individuals and society as a whole.
Tumblr media
Addiction is a significant concern when it comes to social media use. These platforms are designed to be addictive, creating a dopamine-driven feedback loop that keeps users hooked.
“There are only two industries that call their customers ‘users’: illegal drugs and software.” – Edward TufteZ Renowned American Statistician and Professor
According to studies, excessive use of social media can lead to increased rates of depression, anxiety, and loneliness. The constant comparison to others and the pressure to maintain a perfect online image can lead to low self-esteem and negative self-perception.
These Social Media sites have their own algorithms that show users content they are more likely to agree with and interact with, which can lead to the reinforcement of existing beliefs and the amplification of extreme opinions. Polarization and the decline of respectful conversations can be attributed to social media algorithms that create echo chambers.
The spread of misinformation and fake news on social media has become a significant problem, contributing to the public’s mistrust of traditional media and institutions. The platform’s algorithms prioritize engagement, inadvertently promoting sensationalist and misleading content.
The personal data of users is collected and monetized by social media platforms, as they gather information about their interests, preferences, and online behaviour. This data is then sold to advertisers, who use it to create targeted ads that cater to the specific desires and needs of each user. This practice raises concerns about privacy, as individuals may not be fully aware of the extent to which their data is being used and shared. Furthermore, the use of personal data for targeted advertising opens the door for potential manipulation, as advertisers and platforms can influence users’ purchasing decisions and even their opinions on various topics.
“If you’re not paying for the product, you are the product.” –Shoshana Zuboff Author of “The Age of Surveillance Capitalism”
Tumblr media
The Documentary talks about “The attention economy”, which monetizes users’ time and attention, leading to the development of addictive platforms that prioritize engagement over well-being.
It also delves into the algorithms that influence users’ behaviour and beliefs. These algorithms are designed to predict and manipulate users’ interests, creating a personalized online experience. This customization comes at the cost of ethical concerns, as it can exploit vulnerabilities and manipulate emotions.
Tumblr media
Our journey into the digital abyss takes an intriguing turn when we consider the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). Notable figures in the tech world and beyond have expressed their apprehensions about the pervasive spread and potential misuse of AI technologies.
Geoffrey Hinton, the acclaimed pioneer of AI, has expressed his fears concerning AI’s unchecked growth. He cautions that as AI systems become more powerful and autonomous, they could potentially be used maliciously, leading to devastating effects. Hinton suggests that AI, if unregulated, could enable oppressive surveillance, enhance the spread of misinformation, or even facilitate autonomous weapons. The ‘Godfather of AI’ urges for safeguards and ethical guidelines to prevent such possible misuse and to ensure that the technology is employed to benefit humanity.
US President Joe Biden, acknowledging these concerns, summoned top tech executives including Google’s Sundar Pichai and Microsoft’s Satya Nadella to discuss AI’s safety mechanisms and to tackle the rising threats posed by this rapidly advancing technology. The goal was clear: to ensure the tech giants are taking necessary precautions against the potential dangers of AI and to establish more robust regulations to protect the public from AI-induced risks.
The world of finance is not oblivious to the rising power of AI. Legendary investor Warren Buffet has compared AI to an “atom bomb” due to its potential destructive capabilities. Buffet’s apprehensions stem from AI’s power to outperform humans in various tasks, its autonomy, and the potential for it to be exploited for harmful purposes. Despite these concerns, Buffet acknowledges the transformative potential of AI, especially in industries like healthcare and automotive.
AI, like social media, represents a powerful tool that holds both immense promise and potential threats. As users of technology and as a society, it’s crucial to stay informed, critical, and demanding of ethical considerations in these fields. As we navigate through this new age of AI, let’s tread with caution, but also embrace the potential benefits and transformations AI can bring about.
Tumblr media
Following the release of “The Social Dilemma,” the public response was significant, leading to a broader conversation about the role of social media in society. Social media giants, including Facebook, have been forced to address concerns raised in the documentary.
In response to the film, Facebook published an article titled “What The Social Dilemma Gets Wrong,” which attempted to counter some of the documentary’s claims and highlight the steps the company has taken to address user concerns.
Facebook argued that the documentary misrepresented certain aspects of its platform, such as the company’s commitment to combating misinformation and protecting user privacy. Facebook also highlighted the steps they have taken to address user concerns, such as implementing changes to their algorithms and developing new tools to promote user well-being.
Tumblr media
This eye-opening documentary has started important discussions about the ethical issues and social impact of our online activities. By revealing the hidden forces that control these platforms, the film….

After watching The Social Dilemma on Netflix, I learned that big data and algorithms are such powerful tools for social media platforms because they can track and use your likes, follows, and other analytical data to personalize your page and show you posts that will maintain your interest. The dangers of their use of our data is the influence that they have on our lives. They show us media that will keep us on their app and continue browsing. The posts that they show you can also influence people’s actions and decisions. On a personal level, being conscious about social media usage in how long you spend and what you look at helps deal with the usage of your data. Limiting screen time and use of social media also help reduce the problems with social media. On a professional level, I think social media is important to expand brand awareness and support for your company. I think social media is detrimental to society because of the influence that it has on children and teens in what they learn and who they become. Social media has also reduced the amount of face to face contact or conversation which has affected people’s communication and the levels that humans interact with each other. I think the data usage and algorithms used by social media platforms is damaging humans and the society that we live in.

Free Speech, Twitter, Elon & Biko
Musk buying Twitter is a revolution of sorts although a silent one, brought to life by digital interfaces arguing with one another. #Freespeech #ElonMusk #Twitter #SteveBiko #RussellBrand
I asked my son last night what he thought about Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter. He paused for a moment and first replied that he thought free-speech was good and important, then, that he didn’t think it would make any difference to anything and finally, that as Elon Musk has done so much to promote electric cars that we shouldn’t be too concerned. It all came-out in one go and I wasn’t sure…

IT'S NOT ABOUT THE HICKEY
This post was triggered by an anon moving around in these spaces trying to explain away the hickey/bite moment as something trivial. I will save my thoughts on the hickey for the end of this post.
First of all, to that anon- Get off your high horse. Not being a shipper doesn't make you superior. You are probably one of those cringey people cancelling queer armies on tw!tter these days. Now readers, sip your drink as you read this short think piece-
Tumblr media
OT7 Captains in the fandom bubble:-
I really don't get the superiority complex of so called OT7s who love to live inside this cute little bubble they have created for themselves or as they call it nowadays:- " a curated tl". Cancelling people everyday and actually driving people away from the fandom. Every bio says "multis, solos, shippers dni". What are you afraid of? Little pixels? I have personally followed solo fbs of all members and boy the things I have found! They can get extreme at times, but it takes 2 minutes to fact-check their claims and draw your own conclusion.
I follow wholesome ship pages too, they are a great way to not miss out cute moments between various duos. If you are blocking them out, you'll be swept into whatever the OT7 decide the important interactions are. 🤷
Have y'all watched 'The Social Dilemma' on Netflix? I would actually want all bts fans to give it a watch. A very prominent tech figure admitted that she follows a good number of Tw!tter accounts that disagree with her to ensure that she gets to see all sides and all opinions. When you deliberately 'curate' a timeline to feed only your opinions, to make a 'safe' space that doesn't trigger you, without letting new thoughts penetrate it..THAT! That's the beginning of a cult.
Army is not a cult for defending BTS or for calling out billboard and other big authorities, but army is indeed a cult with the way they move against people within the fandom.
I said what I said.
Tumblr media
With a curated 'OT7 captain' timeline, you start internalising things about the artists that the people you follow want to believe:-
1. All true army are OT7 and non shippers. 💫💫
Sure some of them are. But biases exist for a reason, right? If you think people don't run their bias's playlist more than the other 6, you are so deluded. Spotify wrapped'23 was a prime example. With the solo era, the rise of solo fanbases was unavoidable.
2. Your favourites are spotless, impeccable people. 💌💌💌
They are so not. They date, they make mistakes, they hurt people (like we all do). Heck, they might even offend certain groups of people, unknowingly or knowingly. Being ignorant is also a flaw.
3. Everything they say on camera is true.🙊🙊🙊
Everything they say on camera is what they want you to know. As Park Jimin of BTS, as Kim Namjoon of BTS and so on. And yes, your perception of them should be built based on their words alone, but it doesn't mean that you purposefully stay blind in a way that serves your personal projections onto the members. As Jimin once said " please take our words as they are"(Festa 2022). Read between the lines, and you get- "please do not make assumptions about us, please do not project past or future narratives onto us." No matter how much it makes BTS look like a saint, DO NOT paint them as perfect human beings just because they are your idols.
Once you get into the fandom bubble, you start rejecting all opinions that threaten to puncture that perfect bubble. In that process, you end up never getting to know about how some member promotions were horribly managed, how company delayed certain stuff, the obvious company agenda and different business strategies for different members. It's not about victimising members, but calling out the company when they make obvious mistakes. You do not see when hate against a particular member gets aggravated to the point it affects streams and sales.
And musical preference? The way the fandom just collectively decided that if you hate any song except 'ON ft Sia", you are basically an anti. I have no words.. I'll come out and say: I don't like DNA. SORRY JIMIN. Sure it's a great concert song, or maybe at a party, but it's never making it to my down-time personal playlists. Cancel me?
Tumblr media
Top Social Artist?
This is my personal opinion. BTS having a huge presence on social media is both a boon and a curse. While it ensures that new fans are made everyday, the bts social media presence is an uncontrolled monster right now. Millions of insta, YT channels- most of them spreading a superficial image of BTS. It's for this reason, there are so many 'fans' out there who just love BTS for the few members and their visuals. I can guarantee you that they don't even know how streaming works, but they'll be sure to have an insta name like "mrs.jeon jungkook". If you made it to this part, I don't need to tell you how certain ships inducted their shippers through these very channels, spreading misinfo about the group dynamics and a completely manipulated idea of the boys, as if it's not real life, but some shitty bl drama.
While the company is obviously doing nothing about this mess, it is YOUR duty to focus on what's important as a fan and participate in projects that plan to counteract this mess. ( Of course only if you have time)
So..what does the hickey have to do with all this?
When you finally grow out of your perfect pure breed OT7 agenda, who considers this group of men a picture perfect family who can do no sin, you'll be ready to view the hickey/bite mark as a normal functioning member of the society who's in touch with reality.
Did I just write "pure breed"..
Tumblr media
Let's say the hickey/bite does not actually mean anything intimate in a romantic sense. Sure. Even I think it was probably not an exclusively romantic thing. And this is coming from someone who ships them, but I do not see them as 2 people who are dating each other (because I don't claim to know their personal lives).
An older person biting the neck of a younger person long enough to leave a mark is NOT A NORMAL LEVEL of skinship. For friends, for family, for brothers. And this goes for Korea as well as at a global level. Not only k-jikookers but also k-armies had raised eyebrows when that happened. If you didn't raise your eyebrow at this, you need to go out more, have a social life, hang out with long term friends, idk.
But I'm sure if it was a man and a woman, you would have already declared that they are f@cking.
If you have observed jikook through the years, they have had an abnormal level of skinship that even surpasses skinship within their own group. Reminds me of the Butter photoshoot behind, where JK's hands so naturally slid under JM's crop top, like it was a usual thing. Now if one of them reacted differently or in a goofy way, I'd still brush it under the rug. But what had me scratching my head was the indifference. How close do 2 people have to be, for someone to SEARCH for familiar skin to touch?! Let's not forget how JK always touches JM's neck like a habit, massaging, holding, or just caressing, usually a little inside the collar.
Now if they were a man and a woman, you would have already declared that they are f@cking.
If you don't at the very least, acknowledge that it's an abnormally high level of skinship, and that jikook are at the very least, a highly interdependent, symbiotic, close, 2 souls-1 body entity, the closest duo in bangtan..then you are the delulu here. 🫵
Tumblr media
I would advice such anons to stop visiting shipping spaces if you are bringing nothing to the table. (As I always say, opposing views are always welcome as long as you bring receipts and not hate). Maybe spend some time talking to real life people, couples, friends, you know?

I’m currently going down a social media rabbit hole, trying to see the difference between both Carlos’ and Charles’ , because let’s be real, after a few posts, you could see the difference and the narratives they both are going for.
Carlos is going for the “I’m loyal to Ferrari” Narrative, with him sticking to the red and the Ferrari merch in training, in Dakkar when he was supporting his dad (who by the way, is a RED BULL Rally Driver to this day!!). He is going for Charles’ approach last year, where everything in his socials is Ferrari, is curated and is very much according to the Ferrari politics and how they post.
Then there’s Charles, who is going for the silly, relaxed and relatable approach in his socials, and as mentioned a lot by you, he’s kind of working on detaching himself from the Ferrari narrative and the whole “Charles Leclerc the Ferrari driver”.
In a way, they are each working on their agendas, Charles could be working towards that exit or towards pressuring Ferrari that “Right, I’m starting to detach myself from you, and if you don’t wake up, I’m out next year, and I have teams who would definitely take me in” and Carlos who is showing Ferrari “I’m your man, I’m loyal, I’m not complaining, I’m doing what you want, content with your sponsors? Check. Always repping Ferrari even when I’m rooting for Red Bull in Rally which you guys aren’t a part of? Check. Looking the way you want me to be in my socials, that pristine Ferrari F1 driver? Check”. As if he’s trying to convince them to give him the contract and to put their trust in him, make him their number 1.
And let’s be real, with everything going in with contracts and the politics of it, with Fred who wanted the contracts to be signed and announced BY CHRISTMAS OR THE NEW YEAR, and now we’re almost done with January, the narrative both drivers are putting out through their socials, with both of them knowing its power and how to use it properly, I would say that Ferrari is most likely in a dilemma that no team would want rn
yeah! tbh, carlos never really went the extra mile for any other side quests on social aside from racing (the netflix cup event the only recent one that comes to mind.)
the way charles and carlos approach social media is wildly different. but you're right, the way they present themselves definitely reflects the current state of their negotiations with ferrari.
carlos - presents himself only as a ferrari driver on social media. there were news that his contract negotiations faced new obstacles again this week, and his dad again complimented the upcoming audi f1 team:
| Carlos Sainz Sr. reveals he's discussed Audi's F1 entry with Sainz Jr. "I know how seriously they take every project."
at this point it's a pattern that has been repeated a few times. carlos is a very realistic option for audi (that launches in f1 in 2026) -- so his goal is to rn renew with ferrari for at least the 2025 season, and then has audi as an another option.
while carlos uses his family's prominance, charles has more personal sponsors and social engagement. he's using that to negotiate on his end a better contract for himself.
the ferrari contract is known to be quite restrictive, they have puma as their clothing brand so charles was banned to launch his own clothing brand CLACE (which he recently started wearing again). the ferrari contract in general is built around the fact that ferrari doesn't want to have a driver bigger than themselves, ferrari always comes first.
so it's interesting to see their different approach in it and i'm interested to see how the contracts negotiation turn out and when we get the announcements

Just watched 'The Social Dilemma' on Netflix & now more than ever I want to give Tumblr a buck because this site really feels like the last piece of the internet from my teen years where it was full of creativity & fun, the internet that you used on YOUR terms and it didn't feel like a cage you could never escape from.

Confession or a cry of help, I don’t know what to do with the season 3. At first I didn’t have any specific feelings of the news that the season drops on Monday but now when the time is here I really don’t know what to do. My first plan was to hold on watching till Friday so I could binge the first episodes in all time and peace the whole weekend and get them as a reward of the hard week but I’m 2000% sure that this way I’ll end up spoiling myself by Tuesday morning. I could shut down my socials for the next week but apparently I have no self control so I know already that’s not gonna work. Agh! Now I’m frustrated with the Monday launch 😂
Didn’t have the same dilemma last time although I loved the season 1, I was not in fandom and also not very well mentally when season 2 dropped and I postponed the watching all the way till March. But now I have been hardcore into the fandom for a year and the stakes are much higher.
Why it’s on Monday Netflix 😅
Sorry, had to confess and share the drama and first world problems 🤭
Happy watching everyone!!

Yknow what, I think Isaac from Castlevania Netflix is autistic. Sure, you could pass off a lot of stuff as related to his trauma and isolation, but at the same time... There’s just the quietness, the reserved and stoic persona as he focuses on his work, bordering on and sometimes actually socially awkward. There’s Isaac not understanding that the merchant was joking and really meant it as a gift when he gave the mirror, plus getting fixated on the dilemma of a bath being running water reminds me if autistic people taking things literally.
Just his general stiffness around people, but he seems a lot more open and comfortable around the animalistic night creatures, he’d be a cat person. Isaac’s brief tangent on hot vs cold also gives me major sensory issues vibes. Plus, like... I think Isaac being autistic would also add further context to his alienation from humanity, this sense that he’s too unlike “actual” humans to be one of them, hence his brief rejection of that at the end of season 2. It’d make Isaac’s confusion and disconnect feel even more meaningful to me, if he has this constant feeling of ‘masking’ around others. Also I’m autistic and I said so.

Quote
When I meet Tristan [Harris, co-founder of the Centre for Humane Technology behind Netflix's The Social Dilemma] for dinner at an otherwise empty Italian restaurant in New York, I am struck by what it means to be dedicated to saving the world from itself. He is softly spoken, compassionate and convincing, and in committed pursuit of his cause: that of realigning technology to be compatible with our values and sense of meaning. He tells me how he has repeatedly been included in the highest-level meetings for global emergency matters and is woefully struck by the absence of what we all presume must be the case: that in such rooms sit informed adults conceiving plans and making conscientious decisions. Instead, he says with a sigh, it’s just empty talk and face-saving – working out what to say next to the public. As we discuss the cognitive trick that leads us to imagine someone else is going to take care of a crisis, he knows there exists only us – him and you and me – to bring about these urgent changes, to take the sins of the world on ourselves.
