Millennial Mixtape Challenge

This year has been a lot of things for me - the realization that I’m getting old (I have a teenager), the publication of my first book, losing count of the amount of times I’ve watched Sons of Anarchy (I swear I’m in the double digits now), admitting to liking Tom Cruise in a movie. AND I’ve hit a thousand followers. Quadruple digits.

In honor of this achievement, I’m putting together the Millennial Mixtape challenge. I had these songs on either a burned cd that I [redacted] songs for or a cassette tape that I [redacted] the songs off the radio for. I remember sitting in front of my stereo with a blank cassette in and ready…listening to American Top 40 with Kasey Kasem to get these songs. And he always talked over either the beginning or the end of the song.

Yes, I had trouble remembering the name and artist of these songs. Yes, I did google some of them. I did tell you I was getting old.

Anyway - Rules:

No underage smut, no toilet play. Those are hard lines and I won’t reblog them.

Write for whoever you want otherwise. I don’t care. Maybe you’ll introduce me to a new fandom, who knows.

Moodboards are allowed. If a moodboard inspires you to write a fic, tag the creator of the board as you inspo.

No deadline. For sign ups, for submissions. Hell, this is pretty much a perpetual challenge, I guess.

No limit to participants per song.

No min or max words.

Lyrics do not have to be included but are a nice touch.

One: Enchanted (pt. 1)

Summary:

Part one, in which a young girl takes a handsome stranger's hand to follow him head first into an one-night-only adventure.

Echanted (pt. 1)

Prologue

"A sex on the beach, please." The bartender just nodded at me and then set about mixing my drink. It had only been two hours and my father's company's event was already boring me to death. "You don't have to come," he had said a thousand times before we left, but these events were important to him and I wanted to emotionally support him in getting new investors for his company. Besides, it gave me a good excuse to wear my floor-length, off-the-shoulder, midnight blue satin dress that was otherwise in danger of rotting in my closet.

The bar was busy and my eyes wandered over the crowd, over the small round tables that didn't quite reach the stage, while I was waiting for my drink. Now there was a DJ on stage playing dance music, half an hour ago my father had been standing there giving a speech as the company chairman, talking about numbers, balance sheets and flattery. Nothing I was particularly interested in.

My gaze drifted back to the bar and lingered on a man standing at the other end of the bar. Was he watching me? His gaze pierced me even across the short distance. I immediately noticed his hair, which was tousled and looked as if he hadn't combed it all day. It didn't match at all with his smart, dark blue suit, which looked made exclusively for him. The corners of his mouth twisted into a grin and I couldn't help but return his grin. There was something wild and unbridled about his gaze, as if there was a promise of adventure in his eyes. Something tightened inside me, I wanted to avert my gaze, but he had me under a spell.

"Come dance with me!" a voice snapped me out of my enchantment. I hadn't even noticed that the bartender had brought me my drink. Nor had I noticed that my best friend Anna had appeared next to me. I didn't even have time to reply before she was already pulling me onto the dance floor with one hand while she reached for my cocktail with the other and drank it half empty.

"Hey! I just ordered that!", I protested in vain.

"Here, drink up," Anna replied, unimpressed. I rolled my eyes but said nothing. Instead, I downed the rest of the cocktail.

"That's our song!" bawled Anna, forcing me to move to the sound of Britney Spears' "Toxic". It didn't take long for me to feel the first effect of the alcohol and noticeably relax on the dance floor. I liked to dance, but only at home, in my own four walls and without an audience. When Amy Macdonald started with "This is the life", Anna grabbed my hands and we spun around, laughing and shouting the lyrics at each other, the alcohol making me bold. But my gaze kept wandering towards the bar, towards the mysterious stranger who must have vanished into thin air. Or had I only imagined his existence? How many drinks had I had today? And why was I racking my brains over him?

Amy Macdonald was followed by a slow song and Anna bowed theatrically to me to offer her hand like the love interest in a Jane Austen book at a fancy ball, when a man stepped up beside her.

"Excuse me, may I take over for you?" he asked, and my eyes nearly fell out of my head. It was the stranger from the bar. My stranger from the bar, my buzzed subconscious raved.

Anna eyed him briefly, then gave me a meaningful look and replied, "She's all yours." With a giggle, she disappeared towards the bar. She didn't seem to have missed his good looks either. I looked after her in disbelief before my gaze fell on the stranger.

"What's a beautiful young lady like you doing at such an endlessly boring event?" he asked, placing one hand on my lower back and the other clasping my right hand. How could a voice sound so sexy? My heart started to race. Hopefully he didn't notice how sweaty my hand was.

"I was having a great time until just now," I replied with a smile, and it was true. The first hours of these events were always dull, but this time Anna had come along and she always provided action.

"It looked different at the bar," he replied unperturbed. His confident manner did something to me. It was attractive, electrifying.

"I was just in the wrong company then," I replied with a hint of sarcasm.

"And now you're in the right one?"

"I don't know yet," I replied conspiratorially, wondering at my self-confidence that usually left me in such situations. He leaned down to me and I could breathe in his lovely scent. He smelled heavenly.

"The night is still young, let me convince you that I am the right company," he whispered into my ear and I immediately got goosebumps all over my body. His offer sounded tempting, but I wasn't sure what he had in mind. I didn't want to do anything forbidden, that wasn't my style and my father shouldn't worry about me either. On the other hand, I was only 20 and felt the need to have an adventure, to be reckless. It wasn't the roaring 20s for nothing.

"Convince me," I whispered back. I didn't need to say more and he ran ahead off the dance floor, still clutching my right hand. As he passed one of the small tables, he took a champagne bottle from the cooler and ran straight out of the hall into the hotel lobby.

"Do you trust me?" he asked, turning to me, and I just nodded like a mute sheep, ready to do anything this man with his shining eyes full of passion asked me to do.

He ran and I was forced to run with him. With my free hand, I hurriedly lifted the hem of my dress to avoid falling over it. A few hotel employees stopped and shook their heads at us, but he kept running, through the lobby, up the stairs, to the first, second, third, fourth up to the seventh floors, and I felt like my lungs were about to burst. Then he stopped abruptly and turned to me. In the corridor, our loud and rapid breaths broke the silence and for a few moments he just stared at me. I felt like I was on fire, not only because of my hard-working lungs, but also because of his intense gaze, which seemed to bore straight into my soul.

"Ready?" he asked, holding his hand out to me.

"Ready," I replied, placing my hand in his. It felt good. Almost magical.

He led me through a door out onto the roof. The warm early summer air brushed against me and I inhaled deeply. There was a heaviness in the air, as if it were about to storm with lightning illuminating the sky. He pulled me further up to the knee-high parapet. My breath caught in my throat.

"Wow." It was all I could get out.

"You like it?" he asked and I nodded. From up here, you could look right at the big lake where everyone in this city seemed to spent their hot summer days. Normally I wasn't drawn there because the lake was always crowded and noisy, but now the moon was reflected in the water and it took on a magical, haunted colour, like something out of a fairy tale. A plop snapped me out of my thoughts and I turned back to him. He was taking a sip from the champagne bottle.

"Do you come up here often?", I asked curiously. How else did he know this place? And, oh God, had he brought women up here before?

"Yes, when I want to be by myself," he handed me the bottle and I took a sip as well, "My father owns the hotel. He's one of the investors to be wrapped around his finger tonight. I think these events are stupid."

I felt the need to defend my father and his event, but if I was completely honest, I didn't think much of these suck-up events either.

"So why did you come to the event today?", I continued.

"I had to. My dad pays my tuition fees and in return I have to come to stupid hotel events. It's not a bad deal, if I'm being completely honest. And this way I can keep an eye on him and make sure he's not hanging out with random women all night while my mom waits for him at home."

His honesty surprised me, after all we had only known each other for an hour and I didn't even know his name. I was sure that the alcohol was responsible for his loose tongue, but the alcohol was slowly making itself felt in me too.

"Do you want to know what I do when it all gets too much for me? When the weight on my shoulders threatens to crush me?", I asked with the hint of a smile.

"Tell me," he grinned at me and I could have melted at the sight.

I turned away from him, stared out at the lake and took one deep breath. Then I closed my eyes and let the silence hang in the air for a moment before I started screaming at the top of my lungs. Next to me I heard his laughter for the first time and it was infectious. Then he joined in and started screaming too. I could no longer suppress my laughter and when he started howling at the moon like a wolf, it was definitely over for me. I held my stomach from laughing so hard until tears welled up in my eyes.

When I had got myself together again, I looked up at him. He was staring down at me, his gaze dreamy. I eyed him in fascination and noticed that his eyes were green, but grey on the outside. I only noticed his freckles now in the light of the stars. He was beautiful. Then he leaned down and kissed me.

Immediately, everything stopped for me. My heart raced, my hands began to sweat and I drew in air sharply through my nose. His hand clasped my face and I grasped his dishevelled hair, first reluctantly, then more energetically, more urgently. His tongue entered my mouth and played around mine. I felt passion flare up inside me, wild and untamed, and I would have loved to melt into him. His free hand slid down my back to my butt and I let him. It felt good. Forbidden and dangerous, wild and untamed.

"August?" a familiar male voice called across the roof. Immediately, I released my lips from his.

"Who is that?" he whispered hastily.

"My father," I said, horrified. He didn't seem to see us thanks to a ventilation system that half hid us. I really didn't want him seeing me make out with some random dude on a rooftop.

"Your name is really August?" he whispered, amused despite the situation.

"Augustine," I replied, fixing my dress, which had slipped a little after our wild making out. I was about to scurry away when he grabbed me by the arm and pulled me to him. He gave me one last passionate kiss.

"James," he breathed against my lips before I turned away from him and emerged from behind the vent, ready to tell my father a little white lie. My heated cheeks would have to do as a memento of James and the unbridled passion in his eyes and kiss. I wondered if we would meet again. It had certainly been enchanting to meet him.

Tag game: A LIST OF STUFF

I was tagged by the ever creative & hilarious @tortoisesshells! Thank you!

Nicknames: Aside from the baby one my dad still embarassing uses and a high school one that re-emerges once a year with our annual get-together, surprisingly none. Or actually, my sisters and their kids calls me Gradi (French-sounding, GRA- like “grass”-DEE) because that’s how my name came out of my first niece’s toddler mouth a dozen+ years ago, and everybody thought it was hilarious and adopted it. No Matante title for me!

Zodiac sign: Gemini / Cancer hybrid. Never checked which one it was on my birthyear because that’s how much stock my STEM brain puts in astrology.

Height: 5′7″

Hogwarts House: I’ve gotten both Ravenclaw and Slytherin, which totally tracks and is apparently pretty on par for INTJs.

Last thing I googled: The right spelling of Slytherin. Hey, it’s been a while.

Before that, “Légende de la Corriveau”, because my son learned about it in school, and my partner and I were arguing about how many husbands she really had, and whether she was hanged first or died in the infamous cage. Song stuck in my head: Toxic, Britney Spears. It’s been everywhere, this week.

Fav musicians: Sounds blasphemous but... I’m not a big music person? So... whatever’s upbeat and fun and singable on my commute, like... ABBA? Cheesy 90s bands? Barenaked Ladies? Whatever Princess Poppy the Pop Troll is into. Just nothing country or too experimental jazzy.

Following: 52. Hmm. I need to branch out. Any fun blog recs?

Followers: 70. Huh. I’m really surprised that number is larger than the previous. You lovely people are quiet; I thought there was only a dozen of you :)

Do you get asks: Rarely, and pretty much only when I ask for prompts.

Amount of sleep: 6-7hr most nights, 8 on the weekend, and they are FINALLY, after almost a decade of young kids with terrible sleep patterns, mostly uninterrupted. So 6hr straight totally beats 8hr in bits&pieces.

Lucky number: I’ll pick 21 if the options go that high. If not, probably 3.

What are you wearing: Fridays are Blue Checkered Shirt Day at work, and it’s a Team Tradition that I will never break for as long as I work here (and will probably institute wherever I work next). So flannel edition because Winter and jeans, because Friday.

Dream jobs: 1920s egyptologist, forensic anthropologist, The Thirsty Traveler, retired grandma who plays golf, hikes, writes, bakes and spends the worst of winter someplace warmer.

Dream trip: A few weeks with loved ones in a comfortable rented house some place near the sea, old historical cities and natural sites, with a rental car to drive around and visit at our own pace during the day, and nearby shops full of local produce, coffee, drinks, cheese and bread for relaxed evenings talking away on the starlit patio with a home-cooked meal and plenty of good wine.

Instruments you play: Does -badly- teaching myself rudimentary guitar in HS and going through Simply Piano last year count? ... yeah, didn’t think so. So, none. I’m more a Sports & Books type.

Languages you speak: Fluent French (first) and English (since childhood), above tourist level Spanish and German, but for no rational reason because they are the least similar languages ever, the two get mixed up like crazy when I speak either (both must be stored in the “Languages I Suck At” portion of my brain). And I never spoke as good Spanish as when I tried to speak Portuguese, which I can read decently enough, but understand when spoken? Not at all.

Fav song: Again with the music... ugh. I don’t know. Creep by Radiohead? Anything but Helter Skelter from The Beatles? Let’s Groove from Earth, Wind and Fire? Some Bryan Adams power ballad? Hopefully also something from the last 20 years...

Random fact: My dad got the inspiration for my first name from a guy he met at a disco nightclub... who he later found out to be a male exotic dancer. Yup, I was apparently named after a Magic Mike disco dude.

My mom found out at the same time I did. She was considerably less amused than I was.

Cats or dogs: Cats, 200%. Black ones all the better, although I relented and we adopted one of our foster babies, a tabby. He’s the devil but he’s also super sweet and cuddly. We named him Fofos, which is Portuguese for sweet / cute/ cuddly / fluffy (it is also wrongly plural but hey, it was always plural on the boxes of buns and cakes we bought in Portugal, and I already mentionned how abysmal my Portuguese is).

Aesthetic: Puzzles, books and movies in a cozy cabin with a fireplace in a snowy Laurentian forest; late summer nights at the ballpark, days by the pool and vegetable patch, the smell of BBQ in the air; flour-dusted vintage aprons, new recipes, planning meals & drink pairings; periodic tables, Erlenmeyer flasks, just being a nerd.

I made a playlist for my fanfic

Art by my friend Ferbiie. She’s amazing and did this as a surprise and she’s incredibly talented. So go follow her tumblr, her account on Insta for drawings: littlesweetdrawings and read her fanfics at A03.

So, some of you know that I‘m writing Mystic Messenger Fanfic. I just decided to create a playlist to my wip, Wine and Cigarettes, a JuminxZen Fanfic.

There’s a few songs per chapter, and I decided to post the list here with a few notes about each of them.

There are spoilers for the chapters on the song’s choices and explanation. I suggest you go read first and then come back here.

1- Underneath The Mistletoe

A Lovely Night - La La Land Soundtrack (The hate-love dynamics in the beginning of their relationship and the RFA being on a lovely Christmas Night).

Gorgeous - Taylor Swift (Jumin feeling conflicted about Zen)

Daddy Issues - The Neighbourhood (I think the lyrics say everything, they are lonely, ygot issues.)

MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT - Monsta X (this happens after this chapter and before the next chapter. It’s not healthy, but continue to hook up)

Someone You Loved - Lewis Capaldi (Jumin is all the lyrics, but this one really hurts: “I guess I kinda liked the way you numbed all the pain”)

i hate u, i love u - gnash ft. Olivia O’Brien (this chapter it’s more about the characters and Rika, but it’s also the first time in six months that the two saw each other and I love this song so much)
