Articulating Artaud
Even the most arcane esoteric abstract aesthetic theorist of the 20th century turns out to have a pop culture angle. A few in fact. The first is that long before his theatrical scribblings reached the world Antonin Artaud (1896-1948) was a movie actor (do you doubt it? Look at that photo!). He appeared in films by Carl Dreyer, GW Pabst, Fritz Lang, Maurice Tourneur, Abel Gance at al between 1923…

listen guys. guys. i hope you know. that i hate being a business major more than anything. like everyday i sit in my stupid classes and listen to them say stupid things about treating people horribly and it takes so much self control to no murder someone and the only thing that keeps me from doing it is that i have to be better than them and treat people well. like i have to be nice and not hurt people because if i don’t who in that room will. anyways i hope you still think i’m hot even though i’m a business major.

i love that the rise of the internet is contributing to theatre culture on a whole, especially with bringing eyes to certain off-broadway or underground productions (speaking more directly about ride the cyclone). but i am very annoyed by the internetification of theatre in the way of like. fandom culture and forcing these poor actors to be permanently related to certain roles and having to pull back the curtain on certain things that should just always remain a mystery, bc theatre is all about that mystery and of letting the audience sit down unaware and be immersed in something completely new
#ignorance cloud on#im thinking abt how the actor for noel was like. answering questions people had abt his time on ride the cyclone#and like q&as are fine. theyre often nice bc it humanizes the actor rather than the character#but then at the end he teased answering like a very Fandom Specific Question and it bothered me#bc its like. peeling back the curtain of the show#some things are left unsaid bc thats how stories work. u dont need the actor spelling it out for u#also bc it was related to the dumbass 'noel is talia theory' which like. is so fandom-brained its insane#and it completely destroys the concept of noel and mischa as characters bc it implies an inherent maliciousness in noel w his relation to#mischa. in the way that its predatory to fake being someone and then like. string out this relationship#and it also reduces mischa down to an over-extended gay joke????? which is sad#like his song is full of so much longing and passion#i wish people just left it as is#but the fact that like. even the actor for noel is being bothered abt this is just -__-#i kno fandom culture has been harassing actors abt fan bullshit for decades#but its sad to see it in theatre bc theatre is my home and where i derive the most significant meaning#and i want more people to derive their happiness from theatre bc theatre is so wonderful!!!!!!!!!#but i dont want it to be fandomized in the ways it becoming since the hamilton days#which ig could have something to do w guerilla broadway marketing#but for a smaller production like ride the cyclone its like! a double edged sword basically#bc this show is getting the attention it deserves but its also being dragged to the spotlight in a way that can attract fandom culture#and fandom culture itself is a double edged sword so. yeah#thats ur insane mich rant for the night i will now return to thinking about miku's weird gay kids

every holiday i berate myself for not working harder during term time and i wonder how i so easily slip into the cycle of missing lectures -> spending free time catching up on lectures -> missing lectures to catch up on coursework/revision rinse & repeat etc and why can’t i keep up all-day productivity when it should be easier to do so if i’m already up&out for lectures ... but the start of each term has been overwhelmingly stressful and i fail at all-day productivity immediately then its like oh i have a diagnosis.

STEM boyfriend explaining to humanities boyfriend the plot of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein except he can't get past the fact that if Victor Frankenstein had even tried, just a little bit, to follow the scientific method, if he had done anything by actual correct lab procedure, then maybe, just maybe, not everyone would have died horrible deaths.

Pope: Becket maintains that the election of Clarendon was not a free one, that he owes his nomination solely to the royal whim and that consequently the Honour of God, of which he has now decided he is the champion, does not allow him to bear this usurped title any longer. He wishes to be nothing more than an ordinary priest.
Cardinal: [after a moment's thought] The man is clearly an abyss of ambition.
-
Jean Anouilh, Becket (tr. Lucienne Hill, 1960)
#100plays#becket#jean anouilh#lucienne hill#1960#modern drama#theatre quotes#modern theatre#the pope and his cardinal are deeply interesting figures within the play#they're very minor parts‚ originally doubled in the uk premiere ny Roy Dotrice and George Murcell (who were also playing barons)#they're wheeled onstage immediately after King Louis has warned Becket to be wary of the Pope; Louis an intelligent and candid politician#allows his personal admiration for Becket to prompt this warning‚ so that an audience might naturally expect an even more#intelligent politician to enter. but the pope and the cardinal‚ their entrance and the scene are all washed with the brush of farce#in fact the stage directions actually state that the two actors should deliver their lines in 'atrocious' Italian accents#Becket is not a play without humour‚ far from it‚ and there are moments of satire and wit throughout#but these characters are so grotesquely presented‚ the pope himself so wilfully ignorant of the greater machinations of#royal manoeuvring (or ignorant is maybe not the right word; he simply wishes not to see) and the naked greed with which they discuss#Becket's fate as a potential monetary transaction... it's startling. and yet! and yet underneath the sleaze and the grime and the absurdity#the cardinal quietly displays perhaps the single greatest understanding of events and foreseeable outcomes‚ listed quite without#attachment‚ his approach purely amoral but pure in its political grasp. only for Anouilh to then undercut it again with a base#bit of comic business as the two forget who has told the other what and who should know about such and such#it is perhaps the play at its most subversive‚ and certainly the closest Anouilh comes here to interrogating the wider shape of his work#but it also speaks to the playwright's lifelong interest in the idea of forging a moral path; the struggle for honour amid the dangers of#politics. Anouilh was almost unreasonably apolitical‚ for a writer who drew so readily on political themes‚ to the extent that his#behaviour during the nazi occupation of France would be questioned and debated throughout the rest of his life and beyond.#ironically enough‚ the artifice and archness of this scene is in some ways the closest this play comes to inhabiting the same world as the#new drama style that would be Anouilh's undoing; existentialism and absurdity were grabbing hold of the stage‚ and as writers like Beckett#and Ionesco found favour‚ so Anouilh's naturalism and period pieces began to lose popular support. he was becoming unfashionable and#would never again write anything that rivalled the success of this play. having spent his life sitting on fences‚ Jean Anouilh found#himself unable to adapt to the new theatre; he spent his later years as a director‚ interpreting the work of others as well as his own

Antonin artaud if he was still alive would both deny that covid is a virus and would also be incredibly pro masking pro vax and pro washing your hands i’m currently mid way through the first non prefix part (which was very interesting artaud was just such a guy) which is him waxing poetic about plagues and saying “this is just like theatre for real for real”

⛈️ god-of-thunder
I come to Tumblr with a regretful update. As you may know, my family and our fiercest warriors have been traveling between realms in search of our stolen relics.
While attempting to recover one, my brother lost his life in battle while protecting us. He shielded me with his body. My brother died a hero.

May he reach Folkvangr. My deepest condolences. But I thought Baldur was impervious to all harm...?

I really don't think Loki is that bad. Sure, he's had a rocky history, but I don't think he's done anything worthy of scorn. Besides, hasn't he just died and come back or something like that, anyway? He has a blank slate, in my book.
#is it just me? #i hear people saying we should banish or kill him #i find that idea preposterous #he's just misunderstood
