Rough post-it doodles I made during Maths - I was just thinking a lot about Shifty (with ducklings) and Luz. Then I thought of how Ron loved dogs, and then I thought about Trigger the dog, and then I learned I can't draw dogs..Then there's Rat Kiley from The Things They Carried as I imagined him.

“If there is a theme to the whole book it has to do with the fact that stories can save our lives.”
“I believe in stories, in their incredible power to keep people alive, to keep the living alive, and the dead. And if I have started now to play with the stories, inside the stories themselves, well, that’s what people do all the time. Storytelling is the essential human activity. The harder the situation, the more essential it is. In Vietnam men were constantly telling one another stories about the war. Our unit lost a lot of guys around My Lai, but the stories they told stay around after them. I would be mad not to tell the stories I know.”
--Tim O'Brian, about The Things They Carried

I’m like inches away from forcing all my ORV mutuals to read The Things They Carried. Like. The importance of stories! Cycles! The importance of stories in breaking cycles! The Importance of stories in dealing with trauma! Like, YEAH The Things They Carried IS a story about the Vietnam War but. The interweaving of truth and fiction, and the importance of story-truth as opposed to happening-truth!!! THE NARRATIVE!!!

“...his love was too much for him, he felt paralyzed, he wanted to sleep inside her lungs and breathe her blood and be smothered.”- tim o'brien, the things they carried
“the true magic of this broken world lay in the ability of the things it contained to vanish, to become so thoroughly lost, that they might never have existed in the first place.” - michael chabon, the amazing adventures of kavalier & clay
"and i ask you right here please to agree with me that a scar is never ugly. that is what the scar makers want us to think. but you and i, we must make an agreement to defy them. we must see all scars as beauty. okay? this will be our secret. because take it from me, a scar does not form on the dying. a scar means, i survived.” - chris cleave, little bee
“what is the soul? what color is it? i suspected my soul, being mischievous, might slip away while i was dreaming and fail to return. i did my best not to fall asleep, to keep it inside of me where it belonged.” - patti smith, just kids

Beloved: Sethe was born a slave and escaped to Ohio, but eighteen years later she is still not free. She has borne the unthinkable and not gone mad, yet she is still held captive by memories of Sweet Home, the beautiful farm where so many hideous things happened. Meanwhile Sethe’s house has long been troubled by the angry, destructive ghost of her baby, who died nameless and whose tombstone is engraved with a single word: Beloved.
Sethe works at beating back the past, but it makes itself heard and felt incessantly in her memory and in the lives of those around her. When a mysterious teenage girl arrives, calling herself Beloved, Sethe’s terrible secret explodes into the present.
The Things They Carried: The Things They Carried depicts the men of Alpha Company: Jimmy Cross, Henry Dobbins, Rat Kiley, Mitchell Sanders, Norman Bowker, Kiowa, and the character Tim O’Brien, who has survived his tour in Vietnam to become a father and writer at the age of forty-three.

Trust your own story. Get the hell out of the way and let it tell itself.

Do you have any military fiction book recs? I’d love to get some recommendations!
I do, but nothing gay and nothing that's going to make you feel good.
My favorite book of all time is All Quiet On The Western Front. It's about a young, german soldier during World War 1 who, along with his friends, was duped in to enlisting by propaganda.
Written by an actual WW1 veteran, it gives you a very intimate and empathetic look at how war effects the individuals actually in it. It's a beautiful book and I can not recommend it enough.
Others Include: Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Miles, The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien, and Rainbow Six by Tom Clancy.
Anyone please feel free to reblog with your own recs.
