Time travel AU where post canon Lan Qiren travels back in time to when Wei Wuxian is 4 and has just lost his parents. Lan Qiren may hate the man (now boy), but he still follows the rules strictly and will not kill. Instead, Lan Qiren finds a 4 year old Wei Wuxian cowering in an alley hiding from dogs. He protects the boy because the rules tell him that it is his duty to do so.
There is a spiteful part of him that wants to send this boy far away. However, he reconsiders when he thinks of how the Wei Wuxian in his previous life created Demonic Cultivation when left unattended. The best way to keep the boy in line, Lan Qiren figures, is to raise him himself as a ward. Keep your friends close but your enemies closer, they say.
So that is exactly what Lan Qiren does.
Wei Wuxian is brought back to the Cloud Recesses and raised as a ward alongside Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji. Lan Qiren would prefer otherwise, but he doesn't trust anyone else but himself to control Wei Wuxian.
As time goes by, Wei Wuxian proves to be the same and different to the one that Lan Qiren knew previously. He's energetic and mischievous, carefree, with a love for teasing others. Every bit as genius and inventive as Lan Qiren knew of the boy in his previous life. However, there was a strong sense of justice that he didn't notice the last time (or refused to see, but it would take years for him to admit to himself).
And Wei Wuxian thrives in a way that Lan Qiren didn't expect. He knew that Wei Wuxian was powerful and intelligent, yet he did not realize just how so. As much as the boy loved to tease and joke around, he could also be found in the Library Pavilion studying whatever random topic caught his interest. Talking everyone's ears off on what he learned or ways that certain things can be improved upon.
It infuriates Lan Qiren to no end because many times, Wei Wuxian is right. Many times, Wei Wuxian just needs guidance to find the right direction or a different perspective. Since Lan Qiren was raising him alongside his own nephews, the people that Wei Wuxian goes to the most are them: Lan Qiren, Lan Xichen, and Lan Wangji. The latter two always happy and excited to discuss the myriad topics, while the former confused as to the feelings he's having for the boy.
Lan Qiren's sister-in-law passes, and Wei Wuxian kneels next to Lan Wangji in the snow for hours silently in comfort. It's the first indication that the boy is secretly kind and compassionate (not so much if had he paid attention the last time and rid himself of clouded judgments). It's the event that causes the two boys to be inseparable. Of course Lan Qiren is worried but, he tells himself that he will not let them marry. He will not let Wei Wuxian turn into that evil man he ended up being.
Years keep going by, and Lan Qiren finds himself slowly warming up to Wei Wuxian. He's there for many important firsts (losing his teeth, golden core formation, getting his sword, etc). He will never admit that his heart squeezed when the boy accidentally calls him A-die without thinking because he's so excited about something he's learned.
Jiang Fengmian comes to the Cloud Recesses when he finds out that Weo Wuxian is there. Desperately, he tried to convince Lan Qiren to let the boy become a part of Yunmeng Jiang. But Lan Qiren is adamant in his refusal. The boy was raised there the last time and look at how he ended up! He doesn't know that this fundamentally changed Wei Wuxian's destiny. From a tragic hero given a second chance to a free boy allowed to be happy.
The Jiang sect leader mentions during this visit that Wei Wuxian owes Lan Qiren a life debt. It's something that hadn't crossed Lan Qiren's mind. Not really. He had been raising the boy selfishly to change a horrible future. Sure. However, it was against the rules and his own morals to demand a child pay reparations to be allowed to live. He has felt the same way when Lan Sizhui, his good perfect Lan Sizhui, had been adopted into the family. To Lan Qiren, it was unfathomable to demand payment from a child in such ways.
And anyway, Wei Wuxian's genius was already making itself known. If the boy invented even half of what he came up with in his previous life (Lan Qiren crossed his fingers for no Demonic Cultivation), then the Lan Sect would be paid in full from the proceeds.
Still, years continued to creep by, and Lan Qiren began to feel pride in Wei Wuxian. He followed the rules decently well, received his punishment with little protest, and had an insatiable thirst for knowledge. The boy could be seen at any given moment debating an array of topics with seniors, elders, and peers.
When Wei Wuxian started going on night hunts with Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji, the three became known as the Three Jades of Lan. Pride bloomed even more in Lan Qiren's heart. He had successfully turned Wei Wuxian into a good and polished man. What he didn't realize was that he gave structure to a boy who needed it and didn't make him feel guilty for existing.
The Wens came and tried to burn the Cloud Recesses down but didn't succeed. Between Lan Qiren, Wei Wuxian, Lan Xichen, and Lan Wangji, the wards were strengthened, and the books copied and protected. The Sunshot campaign took longer to fight because Wei Wuxian had learned long ago of the dangers to the mind and body that it caused. He had also learned that he shouldn't rip himself apart to help others. Lan Qiren had implored the boy to never try and had used the boy's love and adoration for Lan Xichen and especially Lan Wangji to convince him.
After the Sunshot campaign, Wei Wuxian comes to Lan Qiren about the innocent Wens cultivator and noncultivator alike. By this point, Lan Qiren can agree that innocent people should not die because of selfish greed and blind prejudice. There are years of trials completed by a multisect jury. The Wen sect survives but becomes a minor sect by the time the trials and reparations are completed. Under Wen Qionglin, they focus on medicine and archery.
Wen Qionglin swears brotherhood with Wei Wuxian. It doesn't surprise Lan Qiren in the least bit. Had it been a lifetime ago, it would've infuriated him yet with all these years and direct dealings with Wen Qionglin, he respects the boy. Admires the gentleness that hides a fierce strength and sense of justice. Especially admires Wen Qing, who Lan Xichen ends up falling for and marrying. Again, had it been a lifetime ago, he would've lost his mind. Now, Lan Qiren can see Wen Qing for her genius, her directness, strictness, and her advancements in medicine.
After Lan Xichen and Wen Qing marry, Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian approach Lan Qiren and Lan Xichen to ask about marriage. There is no denying them at this point because he knows that the Wei Wuxian of his previous life is nothing like this current Wei Wuxian (he is but Lan Qiren has no one to admit it to). And anyway, he knows the two will simply elope if denied.
It's several years later, when Lan Qiren finally sits Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji, and Lan Xichen down and tells them a story from a lifetime ago in a forgotten timeliness that may exist somewhere out there if you believe in multiple universes (not surprisingly Wei Wuxian does). They patiently listen as Lan Qiren details everything. There is silence for a long, unbearable moment when he's finished speaking.
Eventually, it's broken by a hug from Wei Wuxian, "Thank you, A-die, for giving me another chance in this life."
"I should be the one thanking you, A-Ying," Lan Qiren says softly, himself grateful for his second life.

Practical Mythology by metisket
Funnest story ever! I loved this soooo much - didn’t want it to ever end. Thank you for this gem ❤️
Quotes:
“You only hurt bad people,” Lan Wangji informs him with perfect confidence. “They won’t be worried.”
“Ah, Lan Zhan,” the Yiling Patriarch says, ducking his head and smiling, but sounding sad for some reason. “If only everyone had the faith in me that you do.”
Lan Wangji frowns. Everyone should have faith in the Yiling Patriarch. The Yiling Patriarch is always fair, and that means his rules and the Lan rules can’t be that different. “Can I visit you again?”
The Yiling Patriarch beams at him so brightly that Lan Wangji’s breath catches. “Yes! Come visit me, Lan Zhan. But you have to wait until you’re grown, okay? For decency’s sake.” He laughs, and Lan Wangji isn’t sure why.
“When will I be grown?” Lan Wangji wants to be clear.
“Hmm.” The Yiling Patriarch looks skyward, rubbing his nose thoughtfully. “…Twenty? Let’s say twenty. Your uncle shouldn’t have too much of a qi deviation about that. How’s that sound?”
Lan Wangji frowns, but nods anyway. It’s a very long time, but he supposes that’s how all the Yiling Patriarch stories are. You can’t win anything worth having without fighting for it yourself. “I will be here.”
“I look forward to it, Lan Zhan,” the Yiling Patriarch, smiling and tugging gently at Lan Wangji’s hair one last time before sending him away to the other side of the barrier—to his brother and uncle.
————
It takes him a couple of hours, but he eventually finds the perfect victim. Said victim is innocently standing in a garden admiring the flowers, and has no idea what level of little brother nonsense is about to hit him. Poor thing.
“So, Xichen-ge, I hear your brother is planning to run away and marry the Yiling Patriarch,” Nie Huaisang casually declares. He’s always felt more comfortable hassling Lan Xichen than he has Lan Wangji, anyway. “What’s that about?”
Lan Xichen sighs and suddenly looks very tired. “It was cute when he was eight.”
Wow. Just wow. “How did he even meet the Yiling Patriarch when he was eight?”
Oh, that was a bad question, because Lan Xichen’s eyes just iced over like a Gusu winter. Nie Huaisang will just have to pry the details of that ugly story from someone else. “Never mind!” he cries. “It doesn’t matter. At least Senior Wei is nice.”
Lan Xichen frowns at him in confusion. “Senior Wei? Your father’s friend, Senior Wei?”
Oh good. At least Nie Huaisang isn’t the only one who didn’t know. “My father’s friend, Senior Wei, who is the Yiling Patriarch. Yes.”
He’s never seen Lan Xichen gape before. This is a shockingly exciting day in the Cloud Recesses.
T, 17.5k
Summary:
The Yiling Patriarch is a living legend—a terrifying, ancient force of nature, dispensing punishment or reward with implacable, indifferent fairness.
Wei Wuxian, on the other hand, is a weird but oddly charming guy who wanders around the cultivation world making fun of people's art and mooching food from sect leaders.
It really upsets people to find out that they're the same person.

She had, in the past, been one to gut said fish in a single stroke along its belly and pull out its innards.
She knew how to not spoil the meat.

“Lan Zhan, er-gege,” Wei Ying murmurs and a shiver goes down Lan Zhan’s back as Wei Ying comes up behind him, Wei Ying’s too warm hands on his shoulders one moment and then stroking down his arms the next, “you look so pretty.” Wei Ying’s lips are gentle as they brush the back of his neck, it takes everything Lan Zhan has not to turn around to face Wei Ying, rather than his own reflection.
“Wei Ying doesn’t think I look…” Lan Zhan doesn’t finish, but the words burn in his mind. Silly, ridiculous, unsightly, and many more that are nearly enough to make Lan Zhan flinch in Wei Ying’s arms as they wrap around his middle. It isn’t as though Lan Zhan feels uncomfortable in the dress that hangs just above his knees, nor do the thin straps against his shoulders make him feel awkward, he truly doesn’t even mind the way the light purple, nearly blue, dress sits perfectly at his waist and his hips, hugging him with nearly the same level of affection as Wei Ying.
It’s that the dress doesn’t feel uncomfortable at all that makes it feel as though a hand has wrapped itself firmly around Lan Zhan’s throat. It feels right. It feels… flattering, more flattering than slacks that never fit quite right on his hips, always either too tight or too loose.
Lan Zhan raises a hand to smooth out the front of the dress, but stops himself when he makes eye contact with Wei Ying in the mirror, the molten warmth in his eyes making Lan Zhan’s breath flutter in his chest. Does Wei Ying have the slightest clue what his eyes do to Lan Zhan? It doesn’t feel fair, but all the same, Lan Zhan feels pinned in place as Wei Ying locks their fingers together before he presses a kiss softer than anything Lan Zhan has ever imagined to the junction between his neck and shoulder. The ghost of the kiss lingers long after Wei Ying has moved downwards, kissing the swell of Lan Zhan’s shoulder and then back up again.
“I think that dress was made just for you, Lan Zhan.” Wei Ying’s voice is quiet, something only meant for Lan Zhan to hear, “I don’t think it would look half as good on anyone else.” Wei Ying’s free hand is moving, dragging up the front of the dress slowly, until he can rest it against Lan Zhan’s chest, his thumb pressing against the hollow of Lan Zhan’s throat. “What do you think of it?”
The question makes Lan Zhan swallow, the muscles of his throat working against Wei Ying’s thumb. He’d made the mistake of letting Wei Ying catch him admiring the dress in a store window, but he’d still denied it when Wei Ying asked if he wanted to go in and try it on. He hadn’t expected Wei Ying to buy it for him, he hadn’t even expected Wei Ying to be able to guess his size so perfectly. Carefully, with his own free hand, Lan Zhan smooths  the dress out again, watching himself instead of Wei Ying and letting himself be caught unaware when Wei Ying noses his hair out of the way to kiss him just underneath one ear.
“I like it,” Lan Zhan hears himself murmur quietly, his hand finding Wei Ying’s arm and holding onto it, squeezing tight, “like it very much.” Lan Zhan can be honest about that much, especially with Wei Ying. There would have been a time, when they were younger, where he would have dug his heels in and refused, he would’ve even called Wei Ying ridiculous before walking away from him, only to think about Wei Ying, his kindness, and the dress for hours and hours on end afterward. His cheeks would have burned in secret whenever he dared to let himself think about it, and they burn now, too, but the pink of them is tempered by Wei Ying’s own warmth.
“I got you something else,” Wei Ying says, though he makes no move to peel himself off of Lan Zhan’s back, if anything, he burrows deeper in, his eyelashes tickling the back of Lan Zhan’s neck, “it was just in case you didn’t want the dress, but I want you to have both, Lan Zhan.”
“Even if I did not like the dress, I would still want it as long as it was from Wei Ying.” Lan Zhan keeps the explanation simple, allowing his eyes to sharpen for just a second as he watches their reflections again. Even if he hadn’t seen it, he could still feel Wei Ying’s grin against the back of his neck, and all at once, Lan Zhan wants to lean more firmly back against Wei Ying’s chest just as badly as his teeth ache to sink into Wei Ying’s arm.
Slowly, Wei Ying eases himself away from Lan Zhan’s back, though he doesn’t let him go, even as he pulls him away from the mirror, leading him over to their bed before he sits him down. The grin on his face eases into something softer as Wei Ying presses one hand to Lan Zhan’s cheek, his thumb stroking back and forth, to the corner of his mouth and over the apple of his cheek and back again right before Wei Ying walks away slowly. He keeps his back to Lan Zhan as he digs through the drawers of his desk, murmuring to himself and only glancing back at Lan Zhan once.
Lan Zhan focuses on the way his knees press together while he watches Wei Ying, the feeling of them rubbing against each other while something anxious crawls up his throat. He wants to ask, he wants to call Wei Ying back to him, but Wei Ying is closing a drawer too loudly before he can, the soft smile on his face giving way to a triumphant grin as he holds a light blue box with a white ribbon to his chest. He tries his best to keep Lan Zhan from seeing it. Lan Zhan does his best to pretend as though he hadn’t been trying to see.
The bed bounces as Wei Ying all but hops onto it, making Lan Zhan lean into him before he settles; Lan Zhan makes no attempt to right himself. For all the effort Wei Ying went into keeping it hidden from Lan Zhan, he’s all too eager to thrust the box into Lan Zhan’s hands.
“I got it from the jewelry store Huan-ge told us about, but I did the engraving myself.” Wei Ying chatters, excited before Lan Zhan has even had the chance to pull the ribbon free. An answer sticks itself inside of Lan Zhan’s throat, but Wei Ying is still watching him, his hand landing on Lan Zhan’s bare knee while he waits. It would be cruel to hold off anymore, but Lan Zhan still takes just a moment to run his thumb over the ribbon, the feeling of it cool to the touch, the exact opposite of Wei Ying’s hand on him. The two sensations should be unpleasant, but how could anything from Wei Ying be even the slightest bit unpleasant?
Lan Zhan pulls the ribbon carefully and slowly, draping it across his lap rather than letting it fall onto the bed or the floor before he opens the box. A locket, oval in shape and adorned with the etchings of two rabbits chasing after each other in an unending circle lays heavy against soft, blue velvet.
“Wei Ying…” Lan Zhan breathes out, the words nearly inaudible. He raises two careful fingers to brush against the rabbits. How long had this taken Wei Ying? How many hours had he spent straining his eyes to create such small but delicate engravings onto a locket like this?
Wei Ying’s fingers are gentle as they brush against Lan Zhan’s wrist. They don’t form a full circle, but it hardly matters as Wei Ying’s lips press against Lan Zhan’s temple and then his cheek. “Even if you didn’t like or want the dress after all… I still wanted you to have something you’d like, Lan Zhan.” There’s a quiet kind of carefulness in Wei Ying’s voice, the kind that Lan Zhan can’t ignore or look away from, his heart twisting in his chest as he finally looks away from the locket, the design burned into his eyes, but disappearing the second he looks into Wei Ying’s eyes.
“More than like it,” Lan Zhan says, his own voice turning rough and desperate, his hand coming to catch Wei Ying’s cheek now and the rest of his body turning towards him. Lan Zhan means to make Wei Ying understand, even if his words fail him by tangling in his throat and refusing to come out. He doesn’t stop himself from kissing Wei Ying with all the force of the words he can’t make himself say, with the whole of his love that threatens to burn him from the inside out. The two of them tip over easily, sliding off of the bed and onto the floor, but Wei Ying does everything he can to take the brunt of the fall, his arms wrapping tight around Lan Zhan all over again.
It takes such little effort for Lan Zhan to settle his weight over Wei Ying, his legs spread wide over Wei Ying’s hips. The length of the dress is enough to keep him decent, not that Lan Zhan can be bothered to care for a moment longer. His arms wrap around Wei Ying’s neck and he presses his face against Wei Ying’s chest, ears straining to hear a heartbeat that thunders just like his own.
Like a cat purring into a sunbeam, Wei Ying’s heartbeat settles anything rough or frayed in Lan Zhan, nerves settling into something perfectly peaceful and still. The fact that Wei Ying can put him into such a trance should alarm him, it should scare him, it used to. He never wanted to be so entirely wrapped up in another person before Wei Ying, and now he doesn’t want to be anywhere else. Lan Zhan doesn’t need to look at his own reflection to know that his eyes have gone dull and soft with satisfaction and relief.
By the time Lan Zhan comes back to himself, Wei Ying’s fingers are already threaded through his hair and his arm is thrown tight across his back. Lan Zhan only sits up because he wants to look at Wei Ying, but it doesn’t stop him from pressing a kiss to Wei Ying’s palm as it slides out of his hair and onto his cheek.
“Lan Zhan,” Wei Ying’s voice is just as soft and molten as his eyes, “I got it wrong earlier, Lan Zhan. You’re beautiful.”
“Wei Ying is beautiful.” Lan Zhan answers, it’s not an argument, merely a fact. Carefully, Lan Zhan leans himself down again, the length of his hair falling over one shoulder like night falling over the world. Wei Ying’s thumb strokes over his lower lip before he lets Lan Zhan kiss him. Lan Zhan doesn’t even think of biting at that thumb until afterwards. “Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan starts, but Wei Ying only shakes his head, his smile glowing like moonlight.
“No thank yous between us, Lan Zhan. That’s your rule.” Wei Ying thinks he’s caught Lan Zhan out, but Lan Zhan only shakes his head, one hand pressed against Wei Ying’s chest while the other still holds tight onto the locket in its box.
“It is not thank you that I want to say,” Lan Zhan says slowly, his hand working slowly back and forth over Wei Ying’s chest. He does want to say thank you, but he knows better, instead, Lan Zhan leans down and murmurs three words against Wei Ying’s ear, words that he knows Wei Ying would never refuse.
When he sits back, Lan Zhan watches as Wei Ying’s face deepens in color, his mouth working wordlessly like a fish pulled from the water before they catch up to him all at once. “Lan Zhan! You!”
If he weren’t sitting on top of Wei Ying, Lan Zhan is almost sure he would’ve been tackled to the ground by now. That’s why he refuses to move when Wei Ying tries his best to sit up, his hands catching Wei Ying’s wrists to keep him down.
But Lan Zhan isn’t cruel, he brushes the same kind of kiss that Wei Ying had given him earlier against his forehead, the corners of his lips tipping upwards against Wei Ying’s struggles.

if nie huaisang had a twin he wouldn't just be one of those twins who occasionally swaps places with their sibling — no, no one would even know that he had a twin.
(no one except for qinghe nie, of course.)
the nie twins would be frighteningly dedicated to keeping up the act so that they would only need to do half the work and attend half the classes/conferences/events/etc.
(notice that i didn't say half the training, since unfortunately da-ge is more than aware that he has two brothers, not one.)
the poor lans at cloud recesses would feel like they're absolutely losing their minds since they know they just saw nie huaisang in class with lan qiren less than five minutes ago, but somehow he's now by the river on the other side of cloud recesses?!
can he teleport? can he just move really fast? can he time-travel? is one of them an illusion or a doppelganger? how can he be in two places at the same time?! no one knows!!
and this of course continues at sect conferences, as well — someone will see nie huaisang sitting by his brother in the meeting hall, but when they leave the room and walk down the hall to go outside, there he is peacefully reading a book out in the gardens! how?!
---
the only way they can really be differentiated is by their sabers, which are similar but not quite the same — but that's irrelevant, since nie huaisang is never seen carrying a saber anway, so how is anyone (outside the sect) to notice?
---
they would be absolutely obsessed with making sure that no one outside the sect ever saw them both at the same time, making an effort to disguise the other in ordinary disciple robes, style their hair differently, and even carry a saber any time that the two of them have to be near each other at the same time.
(but only when they have to be near each other — otherwise, they just make an effort to never be seen together.)
---
both of the twins go to the indoctrination, but one of them goes in disguise.
no one's going to notice if a random little nie disciple goes missing, but they will notice if the nie heir himself disappears. so while one of them stays in place, the other goes exploring...
and when the disastrous night hunt happens, they're able to get help.
(—and maybe nie mingjue himself arrives just in time to wrest that stupid cursed sword away from wei wuxian before he can get any bright ideas, saving us all a lot of heartbreak in the long run...)

ALLOW THE GROUND TO FIND ITS BRUTAL WAY TO ME
18401 words - rated T - graphic depictions of violence
Wei Ying really didn’t mean for this to happen.
Perhaps, he thinks whimsically, there is some comfort in the routine of it, the way he ruins things. He has found that everything he has tried to hold close crumbles in his grip. Wei Ying has never been good with porcelain; Madam Yu never let him around the family’s china. He just wishes, just once, Lan Zhan would not have to find him bleeding out all over their shared bathroom’s floor because of it. They only cleaned these tiles last Sunday.

Okay… but.. but hear me out.
Heavenly calamities, sometimes known as tribulations, are encountered at key points in someone’s cultivation. If a person passes their calamity, they can ascend as a god.
Calamities usually (but not always) involve powerful storms, and from what we’ve seen do not actually have anything to with someone’s spiritual energy, as seen by Hua Cheng who was extremely weak and also dead when he faced his.
Wei Wuxian gave up his core for his brother, was captured and tortured by Wen Chao, and then pushed into the burial mounds surrounded by resentful energy where he fought for three months against zombies while dehydrated and starving.
I’m just saying, this could absolutely have been a heavenly calamity and since he survived, Wei Wuxian could have ascended.
Wouldn’t a god!Wei Wuxian au be so deliciously angst ridden?? Wouldn’t it be such sweetly bitter sorrow to watch as he has to watch from afar as his loved ones are subjugated and slain.
God’s aren’t allowed to interfere in mortal affairs. It’s just such a shame he’s never been one to break a single rule in his life, isn’t it??

He knows right away that he’s dreaming.
There isn’t any one thing that does it: he’s on the steps of Carp Tower, sun blazing too hot, only a whisper of a breeze even at this height. He can feel himself starting to sweat beneath the dark material of his robes, under the hair at the back of his neck. It’s familiar, and vividly real, clearer than any dream he can recall having before. Even so, he knows.
Perhaps it is simply that Lan Zhan is stood beside him. When was the last time that happened?
Fill for the prompt: Wei Wuxian is cursed to experience Lan Wangji's dreams every night in the starring role of himself.
So I started writing this in 2020(!) and last updated in 2021(!!). For a while in the interim I wasn’t writing anything at all for various reasons, and then when I started writing again I was intimidated by the length that this story wanted to be (way longer than anything I’ve finished before, and way longer than I had originally expected it to be), and the length of time that had passed.
However it was never abandoned in my head and I have the next chapter mostly written and the rest pretty well outlined, so in honour of a final push to finish I’m actually putting my name on it (the request to de-anon is in progress) and also saying hey if this seems like something you might like and you don’t mind WIPs with no set schedule, well, here is a link.

Down comes the night by danegen
What a great case fic and premise. Very different than other stories I have read in this fandom. Enjoyed the mystery and relationship development. ❤️❤️🥰
Quotes:
As they walk back to the cart, Wei Wuxian takes a flask from his robe, drinks from it as messily as usual, then offers it to Lan Wangji.
“No, thank you.”
“It’s only water,” Wei Wuxian says, grinning.
“I’m fine.”
Wei Wuxian shrugs and puts the flask away. “Are there rules against sharing a flask, too?”
“That would be unnecessary.” He would not wish to drink from the same flask as his brother, much less a veritable stranger.
Wei Wuxian snorts a laugh. He doesn’t seem capable of taking offense. “How many rules does your sect have?”
“Three thousand.”
Wei Wuxian stops walking to stare at him, wet mouth gaping. “Three thousand?”
“Yes.” He lifts his chin, prepared to defend his sect, but Wei Wuxian seems too shocked for insolence.
“Do you have them all memorized?”
“Yes. All disciples must memorize them.”
“Or what?”
“What do you mean?”
“What happens to them if they don’t memorize all those rules?”
Lan Wangji frowns, confused. “They work until they do. Young disciples copy the principles as part of their lessons.”
Wei Wuxian continues to look perplexed. “But when do you have time to learn actual useful stuff if you’re spending all that time memorizing rules?”
Lan Wangji clenches his jaw and continues walking. “The rules are ‘useful.’”
————
They watch the rain and sip the tea in something like companionable silence. Then Wei Wuxian sighs and stretches out his legs. “Sorry if I’ve been . . . difficult. I’ve always hated being cooped up.”
Lan Wangji could joke that Wei Wuxian is always difficult, but Wei Wuxian’s statement feels like a confession, like he is admitting to a vulnerability—quite unlike his usual arrogance. It seems to warrant a similar admission. “I dislike crowded spaces.”
Wei Wuxian snorts. “Yeah, I’ve noticed.” But his elbow bumps Lan Wangji’s arm to relieve the sting. Such a simple gesture of camaraderie. Lan Wangji could not match it with every word in his vocabulary. He considers bumping back, but he hesitates too long. To do so now would be too awkward.
————
Do you have anybody out there? he wants to ask. Not Wei Wuxian’s mother. Not his shige, if Lan Wangji interpreted last night’s events correctly. Wei Wuxian’s theory—and Lan Wangji has seen no evidence otherwise—is that the creatures can only take the form of those who’ve died. If the blindfolded man was Baoshan’s other disciple, then it’s possible that the only person Wei Wuxian has left is his shifu.
Wei Wuxian is talking about something, but Lan Wangji cannot focus on the words. Let it be me, he thinks as he watches Wei Wuxian, painted gold by the sunlight. Let me be the one who cares for you, here and now, out there and ever after.
The dizi taps his shoulder. “What are you thinking about, Handsome-gege?”
E, 67k
Summary:
Lan Wangji walks forward, extending his senses for some sign of the magic confining them. But there is nothing. One moment, he is walking away from the village. The next, Wei Wuxian stands in the road ahead of him, the dizi tracing lazy arcs in the air.
He stops and looks behind him. The view has not changed. He stands there, helpless. Baffled. Like a koi circling a pond, eternally struggling to go nowhere.
“Messes with your head, doesn’t it?”
He turns to Wei Wuxian, who regards him calmly, almost pityingly. Wei Wuxian has endured this for months. Months. Lan Wangji wants to scream. He wants to batter down this cage and fly away without looking back.
Or while returning from a night hunt, Lan Wangji is trapped in a strange village that is terrorized by monsters. However, an intriguing cultivator named Wei Wuxian is also trapped there, so it isn't all bad. And guess what? They have to be roommates.

[read it on ao3]
The dock above Jiang Yanli is old and rotten in places, but not rotten enough to give away where she’s hiding underneath it, trying hard not to giggle. Her brothers are supposed to be leading her fiance deeper into the woods and eventually out onto the dock, telling him all sorts of made up ghost stories. The three of them had come up with them together last night, but she had been the one to decide that Jiang Cheng should be the one to tell them, Wei Wuxian couldn’t help but grin and that gave the whole thing away.
The sound of their voices drawing closer and closer is Jiang Yanli’s cue to dive beneath the surface of the water, unbound hair fanning out like the bloom of a flower as she draws breath into her chest and holds it. All she has to do is wait for Nie Mingjue’s shadow to tower over the water, and then she could wrap her hand around his ankle while Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian both shoved him into the lake.
They couldn’t do this sort of thing when she was engaged to Jin Zixuan. They tried, and he hadn’t taken it well.
The white robes on her body, layers upon layers of them to keep from allowing them to be come see through, grow heavy and rough in the water, but they do little to slow Jiang Yanli down as the dock above creaks and groans under the weight of three grown men. She can see just enough past the glare of the sun to know that Nie Mingjue is squinting hard at the water, she has to time this perfectly.
Wei Wuxian leans over Nie Mingjue’s shoulder, pointing something out, and it’s Jiang Yanli’s cue to strike, pushing herself up out of the water with a force she shouldn’t have to wrap both small hands around Nie Mingjue’s ankle while both of her brothers shove their shoulders into his back, pitching him forward while they run away, howling with laughter.
Jiang Yanli is almost certain that she’s a very convincing corpse, she can’t see past her own hair to tell otherwise, but the way Nie Mingjue splashes and tries to fight against her hands on his arms all but confirms it. He’s reaching for Baxia, Jiang Yanli knows she shouldn’t laugh, but she still does, it makes him stop splashing for just one long moment before reality sinks in.
“You!” Nie Mingjue sputters, hair clinging to his face as he dips below the surface for just a moment before he remembers how to tread water. It’s an improvement, he couldn’t even float when they’d first gotten engaged. Alarm gives way to amusement as he tries to swim towards her, only to be met with empty water as Jiang Yanli dives away from him, black hair and white burial robes billowing out around her.
Nie Mingjue no longer sinks like a stone, but he still can’t keep up with Jiang Yanli when she truly tries to keep away from him. “I didn’t know Mingjue-dage was so eager to swim with me,” Jiang Yanli grins as she resurfaces, pushing her hair out of her face just to look at him. Some men would have splashed and thundered their way back to the shore by now, but all Nie Mingjue has done is watch her as if she’s something to be marveled at.
He swims towards her carefully, never knowing whether or not she’s going to slip through his fingers again, and admittedly, Jiang Yanli thinks about it, but she lets him draw closer instead. She could push him under again, but that feels too mean, even she wouldn’t forgive herself for that. That’s something her brothers did to each other.
She chooses to be sweet, instead, brushing wet hair from his face and then pressing that same hand against his cheek. He would get tired of swimming with her soon enough, she has to take what she can.
“I would have swam with you sooner if I’d known you made for such a pretty ghost.” Nie Mingjue smiles when he says it, pressing a kiss to the palm of her hand right after, and Jiang Yanli feels her stomach flip before it fills to the brim with butterflies. It isn’t fair how he can tease her right back after she’d conspired with her brothers to push him into the lake.
Slowly, they drift closer and closer to the shore, sinking into the mud just a little as they climb out of the water together, water falling off the both of them in sheets. If she’d been alone, Jiang Yanli might’ve just laid on the dock so the sun could dry her from bottom to top, she might’ve even fallen asleep in the sun like that, but who knows what kind of rumors would get spread if anyone caught her lying her cheek on Nie Mingjue’s chest while they dried together?
She should lead him over to the tree trunk where her clothes, her real clothes, not the burial robes she’d bribed her shimei to get for her, lay hidden, but Nie Mingjue’s arms wrap around her waist. He’s careful not to pull her wet hair as he holds her close, his eyes glued to her face. He always treats her as if she’s some great beauty, as if she’s something to be held close to his heart.
The humidity of Lotus Pier is already making both of their hair curl, Jiang Yanli wants nothing more than to reach out and run her fingers through Nie Mingjue’s curls, her eyes blinking wide while he continues to watch her like he can’t bear to let her out of his sight.
She shouldn’t. Jiang Yanli knows that she shouldn’t, but before she can think twice about it, she’s standing on tiptoe to kiss Nie Mingjue. Her arms wrap around his neck, keeping him close and keeping herself up, though she doesn’t need to for long.
Nie Mingjue picks her up and holds her against him before Jiang Yanli even realizes that she’s being moved, her own hands sliding down to his chest. She can feel his heartbeat there, but it feels far, far too fast for something as simple as picking her up. Carefully, because it might break whatever spell they’re under, Jiang Yanli slides one hand up to Nie Mingjue’s throat, feeling for his pulse and finding it just as fast.
“Sect Leader Nie,” Jiang Yanli calls him that to dump ice water over her own head, her lips still numb from the kiss when Nie Mingjue rests his forehead against hers, his eyes fluttering shut. She needs to get down, she needs to put some sort of distance between them so she doesn’t do anything he might regret. It doesn’t matter that she started it, it doesn’t matter that she played a trick on him or kissed him first. This is too much, she’s done too much, and all Nie Mingjue has done is reward her for it.
Jiang Yanli doesn’t expect to be kissed again, nor does she expect the kiss to linger as long as it does. She can’t hope to control the soft sound that flutters out of her throat, as if one of the butterflies in her stomach has broken loose.
“Qinghe’s waters will be too cold and shallow for you to do this again, Lady Jiang.” Nie Mingjue speaks to her softly, but the reminder of her own title does nothing to cool off the warmth that’s building up underneath her cheeks, “You’ll have to find other means of playing tricks after we marry.”
Nie Mingjue still wants to marry her, even after Jiang Yanli pulled him into the lake and pretended to be a ghost. She even dressed the part.
Slowly, and then all too quickly, a smile bursts across Jiang Yanli’s face while her cheeks burn hotter, threatening to dry them both in an instant. They aren’t supposed to be alone together, not until after they’re married, they’ve already broken that rule, among others. She shouldn’t go to Qinghe until the wedding, either, Jiang Yanli knows that. Her wedding robes aren’t even done yet.
“Perhaps a visit to the Unclean Realm should be arranged,” Jiang Yanli speaks softly, leaning her chin against her hand while she pretends to think, “I’ll have to think of what can be prepared once I settle in, won’t I?”
Jiang Yanli doesn’t expect to see Nie Mingjue grin down at her, but it puts her heart in her throat all the same.
“Your future husband might have tricks of his own, Lady Jiang.” It doesn’t sound like a threat or a warning, it sounds like a promise.
Jiang Yanli can’t wait for him to follow through with it.
