Day One Hundred Eighty-Six
Today was the last day of the school year. I don’t have a ton of reflective thoughts yet because these past few years have been a lot, and I’m still sorting out how they’ve changed me personally and professionally. I will say that this was a uniquely difficult year, and I’m proud of myself and my school for handling it as best we could, and- as this blog reflects- it had its good moments, too. I got to do some great teaching and coaching, and have some fun. And, by spring, it did feel really “normal” here again, which was nice.
I am glad, though, that it’s over.
I spent the morning puttering in my classroom, then had one last mentor/mentee meeting with Ms. H. After that, we had a quick faculty meeting. Basically, it was just The Principal thanking us for all, assuring us that next year will be better, and giving us a few updates about renovations being done in the building this summer. And, lastly, he made an announcement we all kind of expected: The Vice Principal is going to become the principal at one of our elementary schools. It’s definitely our loss, their gain, but at least we’re keeping her in the district.
The Vice Principal leads the ninth grade house, so all of us ninth grade teachers are very curious about who gets hired to fill that position. There were lots of jokes about having to train someone new to deal with all of our loud personalities. Ms. A said that I should become an admin so we wouldn’t have to worry about that, and I said nope, no way, never. I do not have that kind of ambition. Keep my in my classroom forever.
Anyways.
Everyone in the district came to the high school for lunch (which was delicious, and involved cake) and a few words from The Superintendent. He usually addresses everyone at the start of the year, but he hadn’t done that since fall of 2019 because of the pandemic, and he really wanted to do it now. He started by thanking us all for getting through these Covid years, then called for a standing ovation for all our school nurses (which we happily gave), and recognized everyone who’s retiring.
It was good to do that, and good to see my colleagues from the other schools. I got to see Mr. A (who was once my student-teacher, for those of you who haven’t been reading this blog for that long), as well as one of my former athletes, who, like Mr. A, now teaches social studies down at the middle school. He started during the pandemic, so I only saw him once or twice on Zoom calls, and then at the district’s vaccination clinic. Catching up with him for real- talking track, teaching, and all- was very cool.
I had just a few things to pack up after lunch, and one last bulletin board to take down, and then I was done. I saw The Principal on my way down to turn in my check-out sheet, he told me to enjoy my time off, and that was that.
Now it’s summer vacation!!!!

I'm currently reading book 39 and the whole buffalo issue is making me curious if you think any animals could actually use morphing technology to their advantage. The species that comes to my mind first are crows, I think they would have a very enjoyable time committing crimes with it
Hmmmm. Crows with morphing would terrorize the planet, but maybe better than ants?

Day One Hundred Eighty
The Principal emailed teachers last night to ask us not to allow students to work in the hallways during our classes anymore, and to keep them from congregating at the doors before the bells. It’s been causing some incidents, including a fight or two yesterday, so this is how it’s got to be... None of my students were really surprised or bothered when I explained it to them, and my classes all went well. So yay for that, I guess.
Some students are starting to turn multi-genre projects in to be graded, and their work is really excellent. The topics I’ve read about in final drafts so far: inflation, school shootings, endangered species, global warming, and the war in Ukraine. I’ve also proofread a lot of rough drafts, and I’m loving the effort students are putting into revising their work when I give them feedback. Three more days of this next week, projects have to be turned in by the end of class Wednesday.
After school, Mrs. R and I went to ask The Vice Principal if we were going to be on the same team (originally we weren’t, and then we were, and then The Head of School Counseling got Covid, so it was up in the air). She confirmed that we will, which is good because Mrs. R is all about bringing back some of the interdisciplinary stuff Mrs. T and I used to do. She told me I should ask The Principal about getting money for summer curriculum work, but I said I wouldn’t bug him until after graduation. I’m a pain in the neck, at times, but not that big of one.
Speaking of graduation, the seniors spent the afternoon rehearsing, then enjoying a a little carnival with food on one of our fields. After that, they assembled for a car parade through town, which was so fun to watch. It’s a mess of jeeps, trucks and trailers, fancy sports cars, and minivans, all escorted by the local police and fire departments. They had flags, balloons, confetti, the holw nine yards. At first, the tourists in town were super confused when to police came up Main St to block traffic, but I think they figured out what was going on when they saw everyone gathered on the sidewalks to cheer. A lot of them joined in the cheering, too.
It was a delightful way to end the day, for sure, and this weekend is certain to be memorable, too.
