20 Questions for Writers
Thanks for the tag, @musewrangler! This looks fun.
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
94.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
852,051. (Holy cow.)
3. What fandoms do you write for?
A lot! Tolkien, Star Wars, Marvel, and Hornblower are the ones I've written most for, but I've also written stories for the 1985 movie Silverado, and for The Three Musketeers, Dune, The Hunt for Red October, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Jat'ca'nara, The War of the Ring, Pirunir Sur'haaise, break my bonds and be bound to me (what. the. heck.), and Ba'slan Shev'la.
I will admit, I was not expecting all of those. The Star Wars ones (all the Mando'a titles) make sense, WOTR is my first and longest fic and also in the Tolkien fandom, but break my bonds is one of the RAREST of rare pairs and despite it being in the Star Wars fandom too, it's focussed on some comparatively minor characters, so I am...very surprised by that.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes! Always. I love receiving comments so the least I can do is respond to them. Also, I nearly always have thoughts to share with my readers in response to their thoughts on my fic.
6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Unquestionably Cuyan'e. It's a character study of two very deeply broken men who have both lost everything, one at the hands of the other, and it earns its 'hurt no comfort' tag. The title means "Survivors" because they're both the last survivors of their families. It's very unusual for me to write a fic this painful without putting in a happy ending, but that story pretty much showed up to my brain written the way it is, and when that happens I write what I'm given.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
That's much harder to answer than the last one! A significant majority of my fics have happy endings, or at least happier ones than canon. However, I'll have to go with Tegaanal, the climax of my Star Wars fix-it series, because it's such an earned happy ending and we watched the characters fight for it every step of the way.
8. Do you get hate on your fic?
Nope! I review my comments on the first couple of fics of any series, until I have an idea of what my reader base is like, and that seems to ward off the weirdos.
9. Do you write smut?
Heck no. I don't need that in my head.
10. Do you write crossovers?
On occasion! Usually because the muses show up and start jumping on the table banging pans together until I write them something.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to the best of my knowledge.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No, but I HAVE had a piece of music inspired by a fic. I wrote a poem (in Mando'a and in English) for Partaylir, and the absolutely fantastic Siena_Alexandria actually wrote a tune for it and recorded the result. If you like Mandalorians, Mando'a, conlangs, or just good music, listen to it here! (Each chapter is a different version of the poem.)
13. Have you ever co-written a fic?
Yep, several! Mostly with @musewrangler.
14. What‘s your all-time favourite ship?
I don't really have one, as I don't tend to get all that deeply invested in ships. Characters, yes, but not specific ships. I guess I have a soft spot for Walon Vau/Shmi Skywalker, though, since it's a canoe I launched all by myself (see my boggled reaction to break my bonds and be bound to me being one of my most-kudosed fics above).
15. What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
*grits teeth* I. Will. Finish. All. My. WIPs. (There's only one that is arguably in danger of abandonment, Of the History of the White Tree, and I'm going to come back to it as soon as I've reread the source material.)
16. What’s your writing strengths?
Hmm...I would say it's my character writing, above all else. Once I have a clear mental picture of what someone would or wouldn't do, I can basically drop him into situations and just let them play out and see what happens, pretty much trusting the character to respond the way he should. A lot of my fics consist of this, and the consensus from my readers has been that I do it well.
17. What’s your writing weaknesses?
Strong emotions, and people who are open with their emotions, are difficult for me to write. Whenever I write a scene that involves feelings and vulnerability, I have a holy terror of becoming kitschy. And people who actually show their emotions voluntarily by default are kind of a mystery to me, so I don't really write them because I don't understand them.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
Fun to do when I know the language and/or enough of it to get by! I put in quite a lot of Mando'a for my Star Wars stories and I enjoy working within the constraints of its limited vocabulary because it forces me to pare down my usually verbose writing style into just the core of the meaning I intend to convey.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Tolkien! My first, most lasting, and perhaps dearest fandom.
20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written?
HOW CAN I PICK JUST ONE???? My favourite fic is nearly always the one I'm writing now, though, so right now it's So We Can Learn to Pick Ourselves Up, the latest instalment of what started as post-Endgame MCU fix-it and has now grown into a live-action Spider-man multiverse fix-it.
No-pressure tags for @ramblingsofachristiannerd, @hollers-and-holmes, @lady-merian, @ghosts-and-blue-sweaters, @thatonebasicfan, and anyone who'd like to jump on!

"GROND THEY NAMED IT, IN MEMORY OF THE HAMMER OF THE UNDERWORLD OF OLD."
PIC INFO: Spotlight on an illustration depicting Sauron's host during the Siege of Gondor, bringing up the hundred-foot long battering ram, Grond, to smash the Great Gate of Minas Tirith and burn the White City. March 3019 of the Third Age.
"Great engines crawled across the field; and in the midst was a huge ram, great as a forest-tree a hundred feet in length, swinging on mighty chains. Long had it been forging in the dark smithies of Mordor, and its hideous head, founded of black steel, was shaped in the likeness of a ravening wolf; on it spells of ruin lay. Grond they named it, in memory of the Hammer of the Underworld of old. Great beasts drew it, orcs surrounded it, and behind walked mountain-trolls to wield it."

Additional Reading
Amatúile!
For new scholars in the lore of Middle-Earth, I thought it would be a good idea to compile a list of all the official materials released about Tolkien's Legendarium. They will be divided into a few categories, prose, drafts, literary analysis and miscellaneous.
Prose are stories that are complete and read like most novels. Drafts are books that contains stubs and unfinished pieces that Tolkien never finished or meant to polish up. Literary analysis are books that contain collection of Tolkien's other discarded drafts, usually meant to illustrate Tolkien's creative process or other ideas he had regarding The Lord of the Rings and his First Age stories. Finally, miscellaneous are materials that provide new or consolidated information, the stuff that is fun to look at or read.
Tumblr media
PROSE
The Silmarillion- A collection of stories from The First Age. It does not read like The Lord of the Rings, but more like an ancient historical text, like for instance Herodotus' The Histories or Thucydides' The History of the Peloponnesean War. Pace yourself. I will be preparing chapter summaries for The Silmarillion in the future.
The Children of Hurín- This is expanded tale of a chapter from The Silmarillion. It follows the story of Turín Turambar, son of Hurín, a tragic hero of Men. The style of its prose strikes a balance between The Silmarillion and The Lord of the Rings.
Beren and Luthien- another chapter from The Silmarillion that was expanded into a more detailed story. It tells of the epic adventure/love story of Beren and Luthien as they fight against all the odds to be together. One of the most important relationships in all of Middle-Earth.
The Fall of Gondolin- Another expanded Silmarillion chapter. This one concerns the fall of the hidden kingdom of Gondolin, the last stronghold of the Noldor to the forces of Morgoth. It features know characters such as Glorfindel and a young Eärendil.
DRAFTS
Tumblr media
Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-Earth- This is a book of drafts of different stories that appeared in The Silmarillion as well as drafts that never were never up to Tolkien's liking. The longest chapter is a tale about the prince of Númenor and his betrothed, Aldarion and Erendis. The story is mostly finished. The book has commentary from Christopher Tolkien regarding each draft presented in the book.
The Book of Lost Tales I & 2- (Books 1 and 2 of The History of Middle-Earth series) This is a collection of some of the first drafts of some of the first writings Tolkien ever made about Middle-Earth. The framing device is a modern man accidentally washes up on Töl Eressea (Avalon) and talks with an elf who shares lost history with him, which he writes into a bookl. There is also commentary from Christopher Tolkien.
LITERARY ANALYSIS
The Lays of Beleriand- (Book 3 of THME) a collection of half-written epic poems about Beren and Luthien, and Turín Turambar.
The Shaping of Middle-Earth- (Book 4) analyzing how the stories of The Book of Lost Tales matured into what would eventually end up in The Silmarillion.
The Lost Road and other Writings- (Book 5) more fragments on different versions of stories before they appeared in The Silmarillion. It also contains a time-travel story where these stories get connected with 20th Century England.
The Return of Shadow- (Book 6, Volume 1 of the History of The Lord of the Rings) a book containing old drafts of The Fellowship of the Ring. It illustrates how the sequel to The Hobbit went from being similarly light-hearted and episodic to the epic tale it is know as.
The Treason of Isengard- (Book 7, Volume 2) same as the previous but for the first fourth of The Two Towers up to Gandalf's return and the rescue of Theoden.
The War of the Ring- (Book 8, Volume 3) covers the Battle of Helm's Deep, the drowning of Isengard, Frodo, Sam and Gollum's journey to Mordor and Aragorn's arrival at the Battle of Pelennor Fields.
Sauron Defeated- (Book 9, Volume 4) covers the destruction of The Ring and other writings.
Morgoth's Ring- (Book 10) More writings about The Silmarillion. It contains drastic draft updates to his stories. It also has essays on Elven naming conventions and laws. As well as a story about a conversation between a elf and a mortal woman about the nature of death and what that means to mortals compared to elves.
The War of the Jewels- (Book 11) more Silmarillion drafts. There are essays on the history of the elven language. The origin of the ents and Great Eagles. There is also a fragment of a elvish folktale regarding the awakening of the elves.
The Peoples of Middle-Earth (Book 12, Final Installment) contains more drafts of Tolkien's. Notes for the Prologue and the Appendices in The Lord of the Rings. Contains The Shibboleth of Fëanor, a story about elvish language shifts but also about Galadriel. Other notes on the Istari, Cirdan and other notable characters. Also drafts of an abandoned sequel to The Lord of the Rings called A New Shadow focusing on Aragorn's son as king.
MISCELLANEOUS
The Atlas of Middle-Earth (Revised Edtion)- Karen Wynn Fonstad, a cartographer, takes everything we know from The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion to help created a collection of detailed maps of Middle-Earth. A fun way to get a sense of scale and direction. Pretty maps too.
The Nature of Middle-Earth- The unofficial 13th book in The History of Middle-Earth series. It contains various stubs of notes regarding things from how elves mature, how they experience time, how long were The Years of the Trees. And questions regarding the minutiae of Middle-Earth. We also learn that most Númenorean men were beardless. Sorry everyone, Aragorn, Boromir and Faramir had clean, smooth faces.
Tumblr media
Whew, that is a lot. Hopefully this list isn't too daunting. The purpose is only to help you find the next book you might want to delve into. I am also happy to answer question!
Until next time! Namârië!

if i think about the hunger games in peeta's perspective i WILL start sobbing
#imagine you're a boy who's going to die. you're in love with the girl you've been watching from afar. you know your fate.#you just want to help her‚ but then there's the announcement and she's here in front of you‚ kissing you‚ risking her life for you and you#think‚ i could live and i could love. you think she loves you when she hands you the berries‚ when she puts them in her mouth.#then you both survive and you go back home and nothing is real anymore. you have nothing. no family. no friends. no love. just an empty#house. a drunk for a neighbor. the love of your life walking into somebody else's arms. you think‚ i survived the games. i could survive#this. and you also think‚ i should've bit down on those berries‚ should've felt the juice burst before i died.#and then the third quarter quell announcement rings in your ears and you think‚ she will live and i will die as i should have in the first#place. the girl you love kisses you on the beach and somewhere you heart stirs and your mind revolts and you savor every touch she has ever#given to you‚ in front of the cameras and off. because you are a tribute and you are always being watched and snow's presence looms and#you think‚ i know she cares. but you get taken. you get drugged. you get tortured‚ your mind altered. the girl is a mutt‚ a murderer. she's#everything you despise‚ your mind stirs. your heart revolts. you gain more awareness but cannot distinguish reality from fiction and you#have never known katniss' love. the war ends. you heal. you come home. you plant primrose for her. years down the line‚ you grow in love#more than you thought possible. but some days‚ you cannot tell fiction from reality so you ask the love of your life‚ you love me.#real or not real? and she says‚ real‚ and kisses you.#and you sigh and kiss her back and revel in this. a home. a life. a love.#lit#the hunger games#everlark#otp: real or not real?#katniss everdeen#peeta mellark#text#tais toi lys#thgpost

Every now and then I get asked about ships, and I usually avoid the question both because I think it's obvious what will win and because "ship wars" just aren't fun. But, fine. Just this once, in honor of Valentine's Day, ~let the ship wars rage~. Hopefully no one sails too far west and triggers the sinking of Númenor.

Every time I read or watch Lord of the Rings I can’t help but think about how Tolkien had survived one of the bloodiest, most cruel, most dirtiest and darkest wars in human history, came back and wrote this:
“The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.”
And this:
"'I wish it need not have happened in my time,' said Frodo.
'So do I,' said Gandalf, 'and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.'"
And this:
"I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend."
And this:
“Many that live deserve death and some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be so eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the wise cannot see all ends."
And this:
“True courage is about knowing not when to take a life, but when to spare one.”
And clearly they were all written partly because he survived the war, because of what he’d seen and done and learned. But at the same time the unwillingness to lose faith, the courage and strength that this man had to believe in these things after going through hell! It makes the nihilists look so cheap, so uninteresting! People who’ve went through concentration camps and wars believe in humanity anyway, isn’t that proof that hope and love exist? And many, many, many of them did not return or returned broken and cruel and traumatised to the point when no faith in others was possible for them, and nobody can blame them. But there were many who refused to lose faith and hope. They have seen some of the worst that life has to offer and came back believing that we shouldn’t be eager to deal out death in judgement and should love only that which the sword defends.
No matter how many people say that humanity is horrible and undeserving of love, and life is dark and worthless, and love doesn’t exist I remember this and have hope anyway. Because there were people who have actually had all reason to believe in the worst and still believed in the good, so the good must be real. The good is real, even despite the evil, and we must trust in it.

Talk about your fanfics ask:
1, 3, 9, 12
Thank you for asking this! I am always delighted to talk about my stories.
What story (stories?) are you writing rn that you’ll most likely publish next?
Probably the ever-elusive original novel, honestly. After my current fanfic projects, I don't have any more planned, though that doesn't mean I won't get walloped with a new idea soon. But I'm going to start a new arc of A Lot Can Happen In Twenty Years with a completely new character as the bad guy soon, so I guess that sort of counts since that story is more of a catchall for shorts set in the same universe anyway.
3. What tropes do you like writing about the most?
Answered here.
9. Top three fics you’ve written (in author’s opinion)?
AUGH. How can I pick just three? But...if I HAVE to choose...
First place MUST go to The War of the Ring, my massive LOTR rewrite and probably, if you applied thumbscrews, the story I'd admit is my actual favourite out of all the ones I've written.
Second and third place are a lot harder for me to decide on, because my favourite fic is usually the one I'm writing right now! I managed to narrow things down a bit by picking a favourite from each of the fandoms I've written for and comparing those, but that only managed to reduce the number of contenders to five.
Help.
You know what, you're getting all five (in no particular order because IT'S TOO HARD TO PICK OKAY).
Oath of Fealty, a Dune ghost story that I'm very fond of because I imitated the original's made-up chapter quotes and it involves one of my favourite characters in the novel! Book canon, but it's canon compliant for the first movie too.
Kad'au, one of the entries in my Cin Vhetin series, featuring Obi-Wan raising Luke, Jedi-Mandalorian bonding, grief, healing, Jedi history, and hope.
Bullets and Reactors, a fix-it fic for The Hunt for Red October which largely consists of a very tired submarine captain dealing with the aftermath of Shenanigans while trying to make sure that none of the self-sacrificing idiots he's acquired dies before he can get them all home.
Our Fathers Lied, canon-compliant Spider-man 3 angst. Mostly on this list because the title is taken from a terribly beautiful and grievous poem by Rudyard Kipling that fits the main character so perfectly that I almost couldn't believe it when I found it.
Kintsukuroi, a Bucky-centric fic about grief, hope, and picking up the broken pieces of what you had to build something new. Also features Shuri being awesome.
So...yeah, that's a lot more than you asked for, but I couldn't pick just one, darnit!
12. Write another line in your WIP (rude, productive, but okay).
Oy! Rude! (Just kidding.) Here's the line:
Someone will need to turn the power back on as soon as he's contained, Gwen had said about Max, but Harry was starting to have serious doubts about whether Max could be contained.
Ask game is here.

STRAIGHT OUTTA SOUTHERN HARAD -- LIVING, BREATHING, RAMPAGING SIEGE ENGINES.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on the War Mûmamkil and their Haradrim riders, scenes from the War of the Ring and the Battle of the Pelennor Fields as depicted in "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" (2003), directed by Peter Jackson.
"New forces of the enemy were hastening up the road from the River; and from under the walls came the legions of Morgul; and from the southward fields came footmen of Harad with horsemen before them, and behind them rose the huge backs of the mûmakil with war-towers upon them. But northward the white crest of eomer led the great front of the Rohirrim which he had again gathered and marshalled; and out of the City came all the strength of men that was in it, and the silver swan of Dol Amroth was borne in the van, driving the enemy from the Gate."
-- "THE LORD OF THE RINGS," "The Return of the King," Book V, Chapter VI, written by J.R.R. Tolkien
