Am I getting confident?!
Since I had tea school the day right after the Grand Tokyo Tea Ceremony, I have not put my thoughts on record right after the practice as usual. There was a lot going on these days.
But tea school was really calming. Especially since I got to practice with the same utensils like last time, because we practice for the event in December. And this will probably continue until the end of the year.
This is very unusual, since tea ceremony follows the seasons a lot! But to be honest: getting to know some utensils in this way and becoming familiar with them, is an interesting experience as well. And I made less mistakes than last time. I will be so brave to say: I might be confident to do the event without mistakes.
Besides that I have only two side notes:
1. Coincidentally, my skirt matched the manju of that day. I liked that a lot. Also this is a new skirt and it’s perfect for practices (some skirts can get really annoying lol).
Tumblr media
2. I made a photo the temizuya where we clean our hands and mouth before we join the practice. There is no reason why. I just never did until now but somehow thought on that day, why not take a picture. So here you go.

thinking about how Zuko got kicked out of his home country and, by extension, all formal education, at age 13. and i'm sorry Uncle Iroh but you're not qualified to teach a freshly traumatised 13 y/o algebra. so Zuko only has like, an 8th grade level of maths at most.

Oh copy/paste and desktop Tumblr, how I've missed you so XDD
I'm still unable to sit at my desk for as long as I'd like to.. but I can sit long enough to draw some comics here and there at least! One of which being a (somewhat) angsty comic with Grim and V! Did you really think they escaped my angst curse?? It was only a matter of time before I cursed them as well! XDD
But for real, I've wanted to draw something angsty with Grim and V for a while now. And I'm glad I was finally able to! Even if its kind'aaa more of a goofy comic with angsty undertones rather than full on angst. XDD
The more I draw these two, the more lore I start to build in the background... I wonder if I should explore Grim's more serious angst sometime.. 😈😈

Danny has been kidnapped.
Well, more like he was mistaken for someone and then dragged off to who the hell knows where because of said mistaken identity.
Where to?
The Wayne Mansion.
Unfortunately for him, they never noticed until said person he was mistaken for just walked into the room, looking like they just got out of bed and was questioning if they should go back or not.
He got to stay, at the very least, introduced to wonderful cooking, and is given a closed-door view of the Wayne family up close.
He has so MUCH to tell Vlad when he gets back, well, he'll have to kick the man in his shins before that since he somehow FORGOT to pick up him.
Either that, or Vlad was running late because it's Gotham and he's rich and got held up by a mugging or something and then he was kidnapped before he got there.
He took out his phone to check the news because he was bored.
Oh. Vlad's been kidnapped and held for ransom.
Well there went his plans of being picked up for the evening.

culture tips for writing asian settings: tea varieTEAs
atla's got major Tea Guy representation in iroh but let's be real, even non-tea guys are going to be drinking tea in an asian-inspired setting—you'd be served it instead of water most places. so, what kind of tea are you picking for them?
Tumblr media
as an east asian reader, it can take me out of the setting to see the characters drink something like chamomile (from europe/west asia) or... most herbal teas, to be honest. ngl it was weird to see iroh in the show, characterised as a huuuuuuge tea snob, drink stuff like jasmine (it's fine it's just basic, is all! imo!) or like.... a random flower he encounters in the wild.
when we're talking tea, real asian tea, we're talking about the leaf of the camellia sinensis plant. the huge variety we have of tea is actually from the different ways of processing that exact same leaf. popular varieties include:
green: the leaf goes through minimal processing, can have a bright and even leafy/grassy flavour (examples: gunpowder, longjing aka dragon well, matcha, genmaicha)
white: also undergoes minimal processing, with a lighter flavour than even green (examples: silver needle, shou mei)
oolong: the leaf is semi-oxidised, curled, and twisted—can be characterised by a tanniny flavour with a bright aftertaste. my personal favourite! (examples: da hong pao, tieguanyin, dong ding, alishan)
dark (black): note this isn't the same as black tea as we think of it in english. the leaf is fermented to produce an earthy tea with a flavour like petrichor (examples: pu'er)
all the teas listed in the "examples" are fairly credible teas that i think a real tea snob like iroh would drink.
Tumblr media
ok, but what about...
"black tea" as we know it in the west—assam and ceylon etc? this variety is actually called "red tea" in chinese. we don't drink it with milk but to be honest, i've just... never really heard of anyone drinking chinese red tea? which is why i've kept it off the list. (there's lapsang souchong, but i associate that with bri'ish people...) anyone who does drink it, let me know! on the other hand something like assam/ceylon, while extremely delicious and also asian, is a product of british colonialism and is consumed with milk. i think if you wanted to massage some of the traditions & have chai-drinking indian-influenced characters, though, that's cool!
do you actually not drink herbal tea? we do... but a lot of it is considered medicinal. we've got stuff like herbal "cooling tea" with ingredients like sour plum, mesona, or crysanthemum; tea that warms you up like ginseng or ginger. the whole concept of hot/cold in chinese medicine though... that deserves another culture post
camellia leaf murdered my family & i have a grudge against it; what else can my blorbos drink? there'a some good, tasty stuff made of wheat, barley, buckwheat, even soybean. wouldn't be egregious for the characters to drink that!
is milk sacriligeous? a real tea snob would think so, but a lot of asians nowadays are chill about milk in tea—usually in western-influenced red tea. hong kong, thailand, india, taiwan, and malaysia (among others) have their own cultures of milk tea, which has even become a democratic rallying point.
what do you think of iroh inventing bubble tea? my main issue with it is it's anachronistic! it was invented in taiwan in the late 20th century, but atla's set in the equivalent of the mid-19th century... you could also make arguments about whether iroh's too snobby about tea to invent it LOL
there's soooo much more i can say about all this so: keep your eyes peeled! i'll talk about medicine & tea ceremony in the near future <3

something about the first few episodes of the terror having so many numbers. the men, the provisions, the inventory; but also the tension of counting. the scene where goodsir takes a picture of john franklin and his men and he's counting down the seconds. the lashes being counted down during hickey's punishment. and something about how in later episodes, numbers get lost. dates get forgotten. counting just stops. all of it becomes insignificant. like it was a countdown at first but now the time is just running out instead

My take on the Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony 2023
Every year there is an event in Tokyo called The Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony. Since I missed it last year, I made sure to visit it this year!
I took this opportunity to take a friend with me. She knew basically nothing about tea ceremony and asked me so many questions. It made me so happy to share this little world with someone.
Tumblr media
Note: This is not the tea room where the event took place, but a tea room in one of the show houses of the museum.
I have so many thoughts about this event. So let me structure them with some questions ✨
When and where is this event taking place?
The event is usually held on two weekends in October. On the first weekend it is held at the Hamarikyu-Gien and on the second weekend at the Edo Tokyo Architecture Open Air Museum.
Note: I only went to the tea ceremony at Edo Tokyo Architecture Open Air Museum.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some impressions of the museum’s show houses.
How to get tickets?
There are different kinds of tea ceremonies to participate it. Indoor, Outdoor Nodate, for Children and Indoor with English commentary.
The Indoor one is probably the most formal one. Tickets for this one are only available via a lottery which has to be booked a few month in advance! I had no idea about that, but I wasn’t genuinely surprised to be honest.
Tickets for all the other ones are sold on the day. Yet I would recommend to arrive at least before noon, because once the seats are sold out, they are gone.
When we arrived at 11am we could only get tickets for the Outdoor Nodate or Indoor with English commentary slots at 3pm and later. Everything before that was already sold out.
What to expect?
It’s the perfect occasion to get in touch with tea ceremony in a semi-formal way. Some participant seemed a bit more familiar but everything was explained very well. We got a little sheet with information about the guests manners. Additionally, they explained everything during the tea ceremony itself as well. But I have to admit that both explanations didn’t matched 100%. Let’s just say you’ll be guides through everything.
Each slot was about 25 minutes. You will get a Japanese wagashi and a bowl of matcha. As I would expect, this event was hold by the Urasenke school. It’s usually like this, since Urasenke seems to be more present in general.
Next to the tea ceremony events they also have some additional cultural program you can join for free. We went to a little classical concert in an old bath house. As one can imagine, the acoustics where unbelievable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The bath house as venue for a concert.
What it worth it?
For me, every experience around tea ceremony is worth it. But to be honest, for how fast the event is sold out, the slot was over just to fast. 25 minutes is really not that long. So I tried to observe every move. But once I got my wagashi I was so distracted haha.
As for learnings, I took this as an opportunity to spot some differences between Urasenke and Omotesenke. This is a fun practice and helps to consolidate all the steps. The overall order what is done is almost identical. It’s more how each step is performed is sometimes SO different.
And I always love to see all the different kinds of utensils. They all had a very autumn-ish touch which fitted the occasion very well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some impressions of the utensils.
Additionally to all the tea ceremony experience, the location was really interesting. And on that day entrance to the Edo Tokyo Architectural Open Air Museum was completely free. So we spend our waiting time exploring all these old houses and joining the other programs I mentioned earlier. That definitely added up to the experience in a whole.
So as you might can guess, yes it was definitely worth the time and money. Yet, I’m not sure if I would go there again next time. But thats mainly because I live so far away from both venues haha.

it takes a really long time to unlearn but there's no such thing as "cheating" or "half-assing" being a person. if you need to leave the cabinet doors open, leave them open. microwave your tea. sit down in the shower. buy the eggmaker. use your phone to calculate tip.
it's mostly fake posterity rules. who cares if you microwave your dinners. who cares if you use instant coffee. who cares if you stop watching the show that got boring. we all have a different set of skills and a different life and taking care of yourself is fucking hard.
at the end of your life there will be no final scoreboard. nobody is going to judge you because you brushed your teeth in the shower. there will be no final count of the number of times you had the same meal five nights in a row. there will be no fanfare or party because you won at being a person - and no one will be disappointed that you never understood the point of using paper towels to dry your hands off after washing them.
yeah, in this world, people will put up a fuss. i've noticed some of the biggest fusses are over what you'll put in/on your body. the fact that i will regularly eat deli meat straight out of the bag makes a lot of people genuinely concerned for me. but here's the thing: sometimes that's the only way i'm getting any protein. my doctor says i am doing fine. i'm sticking to my weird snacks and calling it deconstructed charcuterie.
they'll say they're horrified because you take a shortcut. that's fine. it's just that it looks like a shortcut to them because they're on a different life path. these kinds of things stand out to them as important. that's fine too. but for you? you've got other things that already make you pretty hard working. and these tiny things - well, they're just clutter on your journey.
