Harry knows Louis has his reasons. He's heard all of them, listed out like one blow after another. The focus should be on the band, on the music, too much at stake. They can't be selfish, need to think about the rest of the boys, the fans. So many things weighing on them, should know better than to push back against management. Louis is the oldest so he needs to make the right choices, be a role model, be mature enough to know when enough is enough.

Louis talks and Harry can hear Simon's voice.

Standing against the wall, Harry presses the rim of the glass against his lips, can smell the vodka inside. It's expensive, served straight because Harry can't afford the calories, no sugar after seven. It's all part of the image, the routine to make Harry hotter, more attractive with a sharp jawline and thin waist. His hair is getting longer now, brushes against his jaw, a real Mick Jagger in his tight jeans and drawling accent, charming whomever he feels like. It doesn't mean shit when he's watching Louis wrap his arm around the shoulders of some up and coming.

He's pretty, Harry guesses, as far as aesthetics go. Big eyes and smooth skin, an upturned mouth in a smirk that makes him look a little impish. Louis is being bold tonight, no one that important around to side eye him, to shove a pretty blond in a mini dress into his lap. So, Louis is free to laugh into the guy's neck, face flushed red and drunk. His free hand has been on the guy's thigh for over an hour, holding him close, holding him down, with a ring on his finger that belongs on Harry's. Louis had said they had to break up because too many people were watching them, that it was a liability, that it just wasn't possible. But someone with a name the tabloids don't care about is safe, Harry guesses.

Jealousy is a fucking collar around his throat, chokes the air out of his lungs, drags him down like an anchor into the darkness, drowning him. Louis used to do that to him, to press their cheeks together, to keep Harry close and safe against his side. Always had to have his hands on Harry somehow, around his wrist, on his waist. But that was before Louis decided to start eating out of the hand that feeds them.

This morning, leaving the studio, Louis had held the door open for Harry and smiled at him, all big and bright and cooing at him. Come on, baby. Hurry up. Like it wasn't a punch to the gut when Louis is the one who told Harry he had to stop calling him that. When Louis is the one who set up the rules, who laid down the way it was going to be. And Harry has been trying to be so good, kept himself away, doesn't try to press or talk to him. Even when it feels like Harry's sawing off a limb every time Louis is in the room.

"Feels fucking rude," Niall mutters, digs his fingers into his own cup, tugging out a cherry. "Over there flaunting it."

"Niall," Harry sighs, takes another sip of his own drink. Across the room, Louis takes the pipe from Zayn, holds it up to show his newest friend.

"Well? It fucking is. I know you all broke up and shit, but honestly? To do it here?" Waving his hand at the center of the room, Niall's top lip curls. "Fucked, mate. Really fucked."

Niall is right. They're in one of the public houses that the label owns, all blase designs and inconsequential art on the walls. But it's still in front of their friends, some of the crew, all the lads. Harry can't remember ever feeling so on the outskirts of the people he considers family, so fucking lonely in his own skin.

"You're Harry fucking Styles," Niall hisses, venomous and angry. He's felt like this since he heard the news, had been the one to pull Harry out of that bathtub, soaked through his clothes, wine drunk and sobbing. Louis doesn't know any of it, but Niall does.

"It was almost Tomlinson." Harry mutters, takes the rest of his drink in one shot, rolls off the wall to stalk towards the stairs. He hasn't worked up the ability to charge across the room yet, to stand his ground, to call Louis out on his shit. No, not yet. So, Harry prefers to have his meltdown behind closed doors, to cry his eyes sore and try to rub the tattoos off his skin.

In the 2019 Fine Line Rolling Stone interview While talking about Lights Up he said:

“‘Happily’ was the first time I saw my name in the credits. I liked that,” he says. “But I knew I’d only sing part of it. I knew if I wrote a really personal song, I wouldn’t sing it. It was like a safety net."

He also listed it as one of the 1D songs he loved to Rolling Stone after going solo:

He didn’t feel stifled in One D, he says, as much as interrupted. “We were touring all the time,” he recalls. “I wrote more as we went, especially on the last two albums.” There are songs from that period he loves, he says, like “Olivia” and “Stockholm Syndrome,” along with the earlier song “Happily.” “But I think it was tough to really delve in and find out who you are as a writer when you’re just kind of dipping your toe each time. We didn’t get the six months to see what kind of shit you can work with. To have time to live with a song, see what you love as a fan, chip at it, hone it and go for that  … it’s heaven.”

Happily was written by Harry with Carl Falk and Savan Kotecha, who wrote many One Direction songs including What Makes you Beautiful. Midnight Memories was written between June - September 2013.

It may be set around April 2013 and the Brit Awards, Harry watched Taylor walk 21 Feb, she was then with Joe 0.1 Tom Odell 22 Feb. By the VMAs in August they were on good terms. Tom wrote Country Star about Taylor at the time which included "young American country star / She's telling me all about her new guitar / She's a little bit clever, a little bit daft / A little bit happy with a broken heart" it also included "We're rolling 'round like tangerines" when Harry was pictured holding one at the awards.

Live Performances

Happily was song 7 for the first 8 shows on the OTRA tour. Harry looked upset in these performances, in the second last in Perth, you see Liam ask Harry "are you OK?" (at 1:01) on 20 February 2015. It was last played 24 February 2015 in Osaka, the day Taylor met Calvin Harris. It hasn't been on any of their solo sets. It was replaced by Stockholm Syndrome on 25 February.

What do you personally think of Harry do you think he loves the spotlight? Do you think he uses girls? By just reading your page I feel like harry isn’t who everybody thinks he is treat people with kindness. I feel like he has two images one for the public and then one behind closed doors and I also think it’s a PR stunt because if you’re trying to keep your relationship private, why would it be by windows? hi julia!! I'm gonna answer based on both of my WIPs bc one of them is chaptered and the other one is not and that sounds fun so let's go

3. Whose your favorite character for this chapter/fic?

in star-crossed (my fantasy fic where they're both witches from enemy covens) louis has to be my most favourite character bc while both he and harry have a developed storyline independent from each other, louis' character as a whole tugs at my heartstrings like no other. he presents himself as this cool witch that has everything under control (he's the older brother, after all, knowing what to do is his thing) but underneath all that attitude there is so much fear. fear of not being enough, fear that what he can offer is not wanted, fear that he doesn't matter. both he and harry play an important part in the story of the island they live in, but the way louis' journey and arc develops is something that is so so precious for me.

as for halloweentown (my halloween fic in which human!harry is trapped in a town full of monsters and louis helps him escape) my favourite so far is zayn. this story is shorter and a sort of comedy so it doesn't leave room for deep characterisations but gosh, i love this dumb but supportive scarecrow with. my. life. in fact, i described him as a talking burlap sack once and @moonchildreads and I still find it hard to stop laughing about it.

13. What common trope(s) do you feel are used in this chapter/fic?

in the chapter of star-crossed i'm writing now, the tropes i used so far are miscommunication, mutual pining, emotional moonlit scenes (stole this one from a tumblr list lol) and "character A looking at character B while B isn't looking"

and as for halloweentown in general we have the sweet combination of strangers to lovers, "there was only one bed", found family and the use of one (1) closet joke.

I agree with your take on Louis like I’m a louie but some louie taking it too far with blaming everything on Harry and his team to the point that it becomes some weird conspiracy. You’re right about the industry and the gp “choosing one”, unfortunately it was always this way.

but this -“and do i think of course that harry would love to see louis be a total failure and for harry styles alone to look like the most talented successful member of one direction? of course. “ - is so true like I just know Harry was sitting and laughing at all the hate that Liam was getting after that Logan Paul podcast, he’s just that kind of person. Sometimes I truly think that he doesn’t know what empathy is because he just seems so calculated and cold. He probably was like “see, I’m the best thing to come out of 1D, look at Liam embarrassing himself”.

i think we can also see how this works in the industry with how angry harry clearly was that zayn left first, because he knew zayn was a direct rival. zayn is better looking and a better singer. and it was true, his first song was more popular than harry's first song. the industry was going to make zayn the star of the band, but unfortunately whatever zayn's gone through and his own refusal to do public performances just really limited him.

and there's no doubt in my mind that every single time one of these guys has fucked up, harry has been eagerly reading and laughing and lapping it up. i do believe he's like that. some don't, i definitely do. remember the louis/zayn weed tapes? how right after there was a major sun exclusive about how harry had nothing to do with it and how he frowned about it? that was from harry and his team, making sure harry got away from that, but that louis and zayn looked bad. he was orchestrating already at that point to be a solo star, and didn't want the others to hurt him.

he even basically confirmed it all with that weird interview where he goes on about how he didn't want to do drugs IN the band because he didn't want to mess it up (like those others messed it up, like lous/zayn fucked it up, he was basically saying), but did want to do them in his own solo career, which he seemed to feel for some reason was better and cooler? so we can see how harry's PR works and how he'd throw the others to the dogs.

also remember when those fans attacked eleanor and he was defending her and got arrested at the airport, within days harry was at the airport taking photos with random fans. again, he's never like that, he doesn't do that often, but suddenly he is? it reminded me of the prince william/kate middleton empty commercial plane flight stunt they did right after all the talk about meghan/harry using private jets.

i think honestly, that even though louis's career is not the highest selling artist, and he's not on the top of all the lists, i do suspect harry is STILL jealous over it, because he has fans, he's looking like he's having fun, he's selling out, and i think harry had hoped and really expected, that louis would be total wash and nobody would care. so that anyone cares about him and niall at this point i suspect is an annoyance to him.

I am afraid to ask, but... what... what is babygate

boy oh boy

okay. for background information, this is about the former boyband known as 1 direction. it had five dudes in it, so obviously women shipped these dudes five ways 'til sunday. among those, as well know, the most popular became harry/louis, or larry as it goes. why? well, harry was a bit fruity, and i guess he interacted the most with louis, so that happened.

now, these girls, they didn't just ship them. they were convinced these boys were both gay and were secretly together (nowadays, insist they are secretly married), but that they COULDN'T come out, because "management" and the all-powerful entity known as "Simon Cowell" of X-Factor fame would not allow it. Simon, it seemed, had a specific bone to pick with Louis, and he decided to dedicate time and resource to make this boring, mediocre white boy's life a living hell

but that's for later.

eventually zayn saw the writing on the wall and decided to quit the band. not long thereafter, the band broke up. i THINK it was after the band broke up, but i might be wrong, but anyway; louis broke up with his then-girlfriend (who these girls were convinced was a fake-dating scenario), and then he went out with this other girl a few times and... well, he got her pregnant

now, instead of just considering that maybe this guy is straight (as he has stated to be several times) or maybe bisexual, they could not conceive the fact that Louis and Harry were not together, or worse, that Louis has having sex with...a girl?! unfathomable. so instead they decided that, actually, this was a ploy by The Evil Management to keep Louis closeted so as to keep his career safe.

(bear in mind this guy is like. a z-list singer. d-list at most. he and liam are competing to be at the bottom of the least interesting member of 1d.)

so after the pregnancy stuff came out, they were like "this is fake. any day now she (the girl who got knocked up) will announce she had a miscarriage". when she started showing signs, they scouted the internet for any picture of her to prove she was wearing a fake pregnant belly. then it wasn't a real baby, it was a doll; if not that, louis wasn't the father, it was his friend or some random (even though apparently they got their hands on the kid's birth certificate and louis' name was right there). and currently the narrative is that the boy is either a hired actor OR it's someone else's kid they are using for....? some reason? because The Evil Management is trying to keep poor sweet louis closeted, even though he doesn't work for them anymore?

I'm sorry it took me a few days to answer. I was trying to track down some good masterposts on the subject because I know they were numerous. Many of them were Lorna's and the information underneath the "read more" cut doesn't survive when someone deactivates.

Here's a tag with most of the relevant posts.

In short, Harry and Louis were behaving in a way that was very not straight. Harry made the "not that important" comment during this time. People felt like it was intentional seeding for a coming out that was in the works. To be fair, Harry and Louis had acted in a similar manner before. Although it was "loud," it wasn't unprecedented.

The difference in 2014 was GBA. GBA (goodbyeadulthood) was a blog that most people think was a plant that was monitoring fandom and helping to seed the coming out (notice the RBB profile picture). Among many other things, she proposed a timeline for the coming out. We made it halfway through the list before it was all rolled back. Some people think the coming out was halted because Zayn left. Supposedly, Simon told Harry and Louis, "We can't afford two scandals" (grain of salt, obviously). Hopefully, some of the linked posts have what you're looking for.

When Dreamers cast Harry as their love interest, he can usually redirect them, but Louis is insistent on being Harry's boyfriend, and despite knowing they have no future, Harry wants to keep up the charade.

2 - I won't put the exact scene here since it's a big spoiler if you haven't read it, but it's the scene from Consequences where the secrets finally get revealed. It kind of feels like I'll never think of anything that good ever again lmaooo

But that feeling just motivated him to always keep his eyes on the prize. Number one in the class rankings every year and the valedictorian spot the next year when they graduated. He was so close he could taste it. And if the only thing in his way was Harry Styles, then Louis was willing to up the stakes to figure out what made him weak just to beat him.
