Not her coming out with an album with a long ass title. She wants to be Lana so bad. SZA was robbed for AOTY, Kelly Clarkson was robbed for best pop VOCAL album (I mean, c'mon now).
Scammys are constantly snubbing Black creators in the major categories. Only 3 black women have won AOTY in the 66 years of the Grammys existence. Two of those albums were cover albums of mainly white acts ( Unforgettable...with Love by Natalie Cole and The Bodyguard Soundtrack by Whitney Houston). The last BW that won AOTY was Lauryn Hill's "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" which won 25 YEARS AGO.Even Mariah Carey hadn't won this category. What baffles me the most is the fact that the most awarded artist in the Grammys history hadn't won a single one AOTY and only has 1 (ONE!) award from the big 4 (Record of the year, Song of the Year, Album of the year and best new artist). She'd won it for Single Ladies. Out of all the hit songs she has, that was the only one that got awarded (imo one of her worst songs).
Renaissance got snubbed last year. And this year we see a tendency of streaming artists (Ariana's newest song comes to mind first) following the Renaissance's sound and house music's becoming trendy again. The Grammy voters even said 'We didn't vote for Beyonce on AOTY because she's won too many already'. Too many my ass. This woman's won only one Grammy outside of the genre category. And the genre categories they put black and brown people in are truly outrageous. No matter what they do, no matter how many new sounds and sub genres they invent, they will always be boxed into R&B and Urban categories. I mean, her country song from 'Lemonade' album 'Daddy Lessons' got snubbed in the country category and got rejected a nomination for being 'not country enough'. Bitch, please. From the first five seconds it's obvious to even non-country listener that it in fact, is a country song. And people that vote for this stuff are supposedly professional musicians and music experts. These same people box The Weeknd's music into R&B categories when he's clearly making pop music.
Jay-Z's speech was just a cherry on top for me. After Swift in her acceptance speech said that " I want to say 'thank you' to the members of the recording academy for voting this way but I know that the way that the recording academy voted is a direct reflection of the passion of the fans" while smugly polishing the Grammy, this man went on stage to get his lifetime achievement thingy and completely obliterated the same institution that Swift was ass kissing just a few minutes prior. He went on and said: " We want y'all to get it right. At least get it close to right. And obviously it's subjective because it's music and it's opinion based. [About his wife] She has more Grammys than everyone and never won AOTY so even by your own metrics that doesn't work. Think about that: the most Grammys, never won AOTY. That doesn't work. Some of you are going to go home tonight and feel like you've been robbed. Some of you may get robbed, some of you don't belong in the category. *everyone gags* No, no. When I get nervous... I tell the truth. But outside of that, we got to keep showing up. And forget the Grammys for a second, just in life, you gotta keep showing up until they give you all those accolades you feel you deserve, until they call you chairman, until they call you a genius, until they call you the greatest of all time". To me that sounds like "POC have to work twice as hard to get half as far". Not a big Jay fan but the speech was great. I'm sure he got his ass whooped on the way home for saying that.
Then the Grammys have proven him right by celebrating white mediocrity by giving Midnights AOTY. The outrageous thing is, only three Black women have won AOTY, she now has four. And many talented black people don't have a single one. The bodies of work that transcend genres, cultures and languages. The bodies of work that have much better musical components and lyrical content. The bodies of work that can stand the test of times and sound fresh and new even 10 years after their release. Artists that aren't afraid to step out of their comfort zone, experiment with genres (Whatever Swift calls 'experiments' don't go outside of the pop genre (Country-pop (Red), synth-pop (1989, Lover), electropop (rep, Lover), acoustic pop and alt-pop (Folkmore)). Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar, TLC, Missy Elliott, Usher, Kanye (his artistic side), Alicia Keys, Lil Wayne, Frank Ocean, and many more black music creators deserve their flowers. They are the ones that are inventing new shit and setting trends in various genres of music, they are the ones that put the most effort into their presentation and live performances. I'm sick and tired of the major showbiz institutions overlooking black, brown, asian, indigenous excellence. These people deserve to be rewarded for their hard work in the same capacity these institutions reward white (anglo) people. I'm sick of people celebrating white mediocrity and overlooking art of different cultures, ethnicities, races.
Now she's gonna be insufferable for at least another year. I've been listening and enjoying her music for the past 5-6 years (not a fan but a casual listener) for the lyrical content of her songs but she's not a poet in any way. Lana's been a staple for me in that regard. And the fact that she dragged her on stage to have that "Adele to Beyonce" moment just gave me the ick. I wouldn't be surprised if Swifties are taking Jay-Z's speech as a sub for TS's wins (haven't gone on twitter yet). I mean, if the shoe fits. Also wouldn't be surprised if she herself took it as a jab to her ego. She's also clearly drunk and possibly on some ❄️ (just my opinion). The only deserved AOTY she has is the Folklore one. And don't get me started on her EMMY win. The fact that a visual masterpieces like Lemonade and Homecoming lost to Carpool Karaoke is absolutely absurd to me. Also the fact that her visual album for her "Lion King" project wasn't even nominated when every single one of those in the category were comedy specials is especially infuriating (If anyone's interested, some of the music videos are up on Youtube). And Swift comes along and swoops up hers in a bullshit category with no actual nominees? Nah, things don't work like that. Or at least, they shouldn't.
Anyway, SZA and Lana were robbed. Victoria Monet's won Best New Artist, Miley got her first win, Phoebe Bridgers went home with the most wins of the night and everyone only talks about Taylor Swift. I'm patiently waiting for the tower to fall. She desperately needs a reality check. This drunkard didn't even acknowledge Celine Dion who handed her the award. I mean, she didn't even look at her. But proceeded to have a cringe and unnecessary handshake with Jack Antonoff. You're in a professional setting, behave like an adult and save those handshakes for the afterparty or do it behind the stage after giving a speech. She proceeded to drag Lana on stage to the point where she was trying not to fall. At this point I'm convinced that swifties have brainwashed her into the thinking that the nicest thing she can do for someone is grace them with her presence. Ana Clara's family serves as a great example.
Her hair was a miss, she looked like she was wearing a wedding gown and the black gloves didn't help. Her make up made her look old. Her accessories were excessive and tacky and it looked like she was also wearing hip pads, shoes were giving late 00s-early 10s. Overall, fire the whole styling team. You're a global superstar that's a billionaire and you look cheap as fuck.
TL;DR : She shouldn't have won. Lana and SZA were robbed. She once again made the night about herself and her narcissism peaked in the moments where she'd accepted her awards. Black creators are criminally overlooked. She ass kissed the grammy voters and Jay-Z shamed them just a few minutes later and was right. She needs to get rid of her stylist, hair stylist and make up artist. Another drunk award show. Beyonce should have at least one AOTY. Sick and tired of people celebrating white mediocrity in show business.
Sorry for the long ass paragraph, just felt like it was a safe space to vent 💜
you guys can vent all you want. I'm here for it🤏

Just noticed the 1975 isnt nominated for any Grammys, not even best alt album for BFIAFL
Like this is def a snub what the fuck??
Then i just watched Mattys rant from November about the Grammys like he should be angry this is bullshit that they keep getting shunned
The podcast couldn't have affected this, right? Ugh
Oh, the podcast absolutely has affected this!! The GRAMMYS are a bunch of uppity folks, sadly. And the don’t like anything remotely “controversial,” “political,” or that doesn’t have mass appeal. And Matty….well. He’s all of those things.
Also, Matty has sort of “rejected” them before hahahaha. Like during ABIIOR when he made fun of them for nominating GYAT for “best rock song.” The GRAMMYs don’t take kindly to criticism.
There’s also a bunch of other reasons. Like, the committee which selects who’s nominated has been criticized over and over for favoritism. Two years ago or something, some of the women of color who were invited to be on the committee said it was an awful experience for them. Cuz every time they’d suggest an artist who, they thought, did especially good work (very often queer, female, poc…) they were told no. And they said it felt like the nominees were already decided on. It’s always the popular people whose labels are friendly with the Grammys and shit. So Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, etc.
They’ve snubbed plenty of amazing artists before. I remember when The Weeknd’s 2020 album didn’t get a SINGLE NOMINATION despite the insane creative work that went into the album, the music video, the character he portrayed…mad. Years ago they did the same to Kendrick Lamar when he WAS nominated but didn’t win even though his album was clearly leaguesssss above others. There is an entire wiki page about the GRAMMYS being accused of racism. Cuz…well, they’re racist.
So anyway the long and the short of this is that even though BFIAFL or at the very least About You absolutely deserved the nomination, Matty and the band’s ethics scare them and I don’t think they will ever give the 1975 a win. Especially now that Matty has called them out lmao.

which is exactly why HES blew up// I can't emphasize this enough. Weeknd was there for a while but Grammies snub cut him. He was the only one, it's so crazy. COVID time, even rs with Olivia and DWD fuss. I really wonder if people will start to realize how empty his songs are and how lazy performer he is
And let's examine that snub. Blinding Lights was HUGE in 2020, but neither it nor The Weeknd receive any Grammy nominations in 2021. Guess who did receive a nomination for Best Pop Solo Performance that year: Mr. Harry Edward Styles.
Of course, no one can be sure who would have won the vote, but not having Blinding Lights sitting there in that category sure did make it a lot easier for that fruit song to win. I don't believe in coincidences, and we don't call them the Scammies for nothing.
1. Harry Edward Styles opened the show thanks to his connection to Ben Winston
2. Harry Edward Styles won his first Grammy.
3. The Weeknd and the biggest song of 2020 were snubbed, paving the way for HES to slip right in there.

imo The Weeknd was the one that was snubbed. He had the n1 song blinding lights and didn't even got nominated
multiple people can be snubbed simultaneously. ofc he was snubbed (i remember being sure pre-nominations that blinding lights will win ROTY), but out of people nominated, taylor was snubbed, esp in the case of SOTY. they have a history of not giving it to her specifically

I’m not condoning Matty’s words about Kanye, but we have to be honest and say that if he wants to rant about the Grammy he has every right to. Also Taylor did cry about rep being snubbed in Miss americana saying that she was going to do a better album next time. It’s the same thing in different fonts (still not defending Matty for including Kanye in this, that sucked)
I just don't know why he had to bring Kanye up. He could have still talked about the Grammys and used The Weeknd as an example of someone who has talked about how the Grammy voting isn't fair.

here’s the thing...remember when beyonce lost to beck and everyone was like wHo’S bEcK?! when he’s been around for as long as beyonce has (if not a little longer). the recording academy decides who wins. it’s definitely rigged at times. I’m still pissed that they snubbed The Weeknd and Miley last year, especially when the Weeknd literally had the number one song of the fucking year. the recording academy is sent things from the artists to show not only why they should be nominated but why they should win. It shouldn’t be like that, but it is. They’re also looking at more than just the artist. They’re looking at lyrics, how songs are written, how albums are formed, production, mixes, etc. the academy clearly thought Harry’s House was better than Renaissance. In what ways, we don’t know. And Renaissance is a good album, but personally there’s only like 5 songs that I actually like and listen to. I am not a big fan of Beyonce. I like some of her music, but I don’t think she’s the queen of the fucking world. She has people like Jay-Z in her back pocket who can get her some of the best producers in the world to make her music. How much writing does she actually do? How involved in the production is she? I’m genuinely asking because I don’t know.
I live in Harry’s asshole, yes. But I also know when to come up for air. I am all for critique but being nasty for the sake of it is disgusting. To see that people are calling him racist because he said “things like this don’t happen to people like me”???? How does your mind even go there???? I know you have to be a fan/have gone to his shows to know he says that at every single one, but like even still??? His album came out in May. Beyonce’s feels like it just came out. It’s wasn’t the YEAR the way HH was. And I’m sorry, I just resonate with HH more than the other albums that were nominated. Special wasn’t for me. 30 wasn’t for me. I had no idea Coldplay was even still making music, etc. etc. And I love Adele and I love Lizzo. They just didn’t do it for me this year and that’s okay.
also IT’S A FUCKING AWARD SHOW THAT MEANS ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NOTHING! we are not in the industry, we are not famous. Your fav is not going to see you fighting for your life on their behalf because they don’t care. BYONCE HAS THE RECORD FOR MOST GRAMMYS BY ANY ARTIST!!! Isn’t that enough???? some of yall need to step outside and unplug, I’m begging

The Grammys have always been suspicious. Imagine Rain On Me winning over Exile. 🤯 Imagine Yummy nominated in ANYTHING at all over songs like Blinding Lights. 🤯 Whatever that mess of an album Changes was got more nominations than Fine Line? 🤯 The Weeknd was completely left out even though After Hours was a commercial success and was everywhere AND most importantly, it was actually good. Blinding Lights smashing records. 0 nominations. All because he chose the superbowl over the Grammys. And why not? At the superbowl he's promoting himself and his music, at the grammys he's just bringing them money and extra views. So it makes sense that he'll choose a bigger wider audience. Billie sweeping the 2020 grammys in all the major categories and then winning again in 2021 Record of the year for a second time, 2 years in a row. And then there are huge artists who can't do that. Arguably, Don't Start Now (by Dua Lipa), Savage (by Meghan Thee Stallion), Say So (by Doja) and Circles (by Post Malone) were bigger songs, or at least the ones that I could not escape. She's just a grammy darling like Adele. (Even The Brits. How did she win Inernational Female by releasing just what? 4 songs the whole year, compared to other artists releasing entire albums)(Even 2021 Song of the Year was chosen based on politics and what was happening in the US at the time and they were trying to just save face. If it would've been any other year, this song wouldn't have won.) They couldn't give her anything in 2022 though cause it would've been way too obvious and their viewership has been declining a while now as well as being accused of racism and big artists like Ariana Grande, The Weeknd and Drake calling them out, even just straight up not submitting their work (The Weeknd and Drake). Since 2021 they've been definitely trying to not let artists sweep the awards. Harry has been snubbed a lot by the Grammys, Taylor too, and so many other huge artists too. It's exhausting seeing it happen though, that's for sure. There are definitely people who pay for their nominations (*cough cough* SB perhaps paying for Yummy Yummy👀. Honestly, what a joke.).
And I remember reading that the people that vote on the Grammys didn’t hear half the music they were voting for. They def play favs

I would like to rank the ex bandmates because I have some stuff to say. From worst to least worse.
4. Zayn. Like another anon said, Zayn was always number 2 or even 1 for me a long time. I honestly thought he just didn’t want anything else to do with the band. Then Fine Line became really successful and Zayn lost his shit. As soon as he realized it was about to be nominated for a Grammy he decided to piggyback off of the The Weeknd and shade the Grammys. Biggest difference is that The Weeknd had songs and an album that did well enough to deserve a Grammy nom but he was snubbed. No one outside of Directioners or ex Directioners knew Zayn had put out NIL. So his Twitter rants looked like shade towards Harry and immature tantrums. He then began posting pics whenever Harry posted a pic or did anything monumental. Zarries use this as Zarry proof when in reality it’s Zayn saying “Look at me!”. Then you have Zayn singing 1D songs on his lives. I thought he didn’t like the music? He is so jealous of Harry and he can’t help himself from being bitchy about it in his own aloof sort of way. Last, how can a guy who assaulted an older woman still have fans? I will never understand why he still has a fanbase. It’s definitely smaller, but they’re still loud and annoying on Twitter.
4. Louis is tied with Zayn because it seems too many people have forgotten that he also assaulted a female like Zayn. Those girls in the airport shouldn’t have jumped Eleanor, but Louis shouldn’t have jumped in and swung at a female. Airport security was right there. In fact, Louis fell tripping over security in an attempt to get to the girls. Also, Louis knows he shouldn’t have a career. You can tell by how he answered some of the questions in that recent interview. He knows who his fanbase is and caters to them. I believe 100% that’s why Eleanor finally had enough. She went to his shows and was surround by pride flags and Larry signs and couldn’t handle him not addressing it any longer. She probably even brought up the fact that she has to limit her replies on Instagram when she makes money as an influencer, but he can’t even address the fact that his fans have disrespected her for years. Louis is also cocky for someone who knows he shouldn’t have a career. He is so privileged and thinks his fans should go the extra mile for him because he asks them to. Him being groped by teenage fans is also disgusting. He must have really liked it because now he’s dating someone who looks like a teenager.
3. Niall tries to act nonchalant, but he is doing everything in his power to have a career that mirrors Harry’s. The begging in one tweet then bragging in another is also annoying. Like, does he think he’s the shit or does he need to beg his fans to treat him like he’s the shit? I guess both.
2. Liam is annoying as hell. That’s his only flaw. He needs a PR team because his personality is not it and I don’t think he even realizes it.
Very perceptive analysis! Thank you for this.

I love harry dearly but album of the year??? If Beyoncé doesn’t win I will riot. Also agree cannot believe how much more obvious The Weeknd’s snubs are now
i only wish he hadn't gotten aoty nom just bc i don't want him to think that's the direction he should be going in 😩 it's lacking SOOO much, like fine line and hs1 are way better albums but he didn't have the level of fame then SIGH

THE GRAMMY PROBLEM: MISREPRESENTATION
Tumblr media
Any fan of hip-hop or rap who saw the most recent Grammy’s was likely pretty disappointed by the lineup of nominated albums. While commercially successful, Jack Harlow and DJ Khaled’s projects were critically lambasted for their vapid, generic sound, mostly lacking anything in terms of creative nuance or artistic purpose.
Despite this, these two albums took up two of the five total nominations, in place of a variety of (arguably) more interesting, creatively fulfilling projects from artists like Freddie Gibbs, Denzel Curry, JID, Black Thought and others.
People less familiar with the Grammy’s history may also wonder why incredibly popular artists like Drake and The Weeknd, actively decided to not submit their albums for consideration.
For many POC artists and those in the rap community, there has existed a sentiment of misrepresentation for decades now. Even after becoming the country’s most popular genre since a particular rise in 2016, only two rap albums have ever won album of the year --- Lauryn Hill’s “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”, and OutKast’s “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below”. The most recent of those two albums released in 2004.
Many rappers, including Eminem, have directly stated that regardless of quality it feels the award show continues to snub the genre as a whole from winning larger accolades.
“For whatever reason, they’re always pitching this hint that you might win album of the year, which used to be a big deal. I don’t think it’s a big deal now.” Eminem said in an interview with Sway Calloway.
Even within the category of rap, there has been continued misrepresentation. Cardi B in 2017 was the first solo female artist to win an award for Best Rap Album, despite artists like Nicki Minaj and others having critically and commercially successful albums in the past.
The institution has also been repeatedly criticized for misplacing non-rap music by POC artists in the rap category, placing Drake’s “Hotline Bling” as a Rap single, despite him essentially singing the entire time and the song feeling more pop-r&b if anything.
Tyler, The Creator, won Best Rap Album for Igor --- largely an R&B, alt-rock album that Tyler himself said was not rap.
Others received no nominations. The Weeknd received no nominations after an incredibly successful release of “After Hours” and the single “Blinding Lights”, which later ended up being performed at the Super Bowl.
Even one of the most grammy-celebrated artists, Jay-Z, has previously boycotted the award ceremony for not providing adequate representation.
The list extends decades from Will Smith in 1989 to Drake and the Weeknd last year. Almost every major hip-hop artist has boycotted the Grammy’s at one time, with a handful of examples being:
Rhianna, Frank Ocean, Rick Ross, Nas, Eminem, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Snoop Dogg --- just about every major name in the industry has expressed disdain or outright boycotted the awards at one instance.
This cyclically hurts the Grammy’s as well: as more artists feel underrepresented, more of them withdraw their albums for consideration (Drake and The Weeknd currently, Frank Ocean in 2017, etc.), causing the award ceremony to have to look elsewhere among the Billboard 100.
When it does that, Jack Harlow and DJ Khaled are pitted against some of the best of the year, like Kendrick’s “Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers.” Artists that have denounced the institution are still desperately awarded by the Grammy’s through features they provided on those out-there albums.
Drake won a Grammy this year despite not submitting any music. The same is true of The Weeknd’s feature on “Hurricane” by Kanye West last year.
To be able to award artists directly, and to regain trust with minority communities in general, something will have to be done about the Grammy’s selection and revision process.
While more information has been shed about the award ceremony’s selection process in recent years, for a long time it was largely secretive. Additionally, industry members like a former Recording Academy CEO have publicly alleged the award show pushes artists it has good relations with as an opportunity to have their nominated songs performed at the ceremony.
I think at this point in time it’s uncertain how much cultural relevance these traditional media award ceremonies will have in the coming years. While this year was technically an increase, the past three years have found the series in some of its lower viewership numbers ever, and anecdotally award ceremonies are beginning to feel more of a “parents’ watch” than my peers. Regardless of the status of the award industry at large, one thing is clear: the Grammy’s needs to seriously re-evaluate its selection process if it ever wants to go from laughing stock to lauded again.

NEW SERIES I MAY OR MAY NOT STICK TO:
ALBUMS I'VE LISTENED TO - EPISODE ONE
So yeah, whether I remember to update this is dependent on "if i remember" but anyways this is a series where I just talk about albums I've listened to, and give my opnion on them.
first album is:
Tumblr media
AFTER HOURS - THE WEEKND (2020)
where to begin with this.
oh yeah, THIS ALBUM EXPERIENCED THE GREATEST GRAMMY SNUB IN HISTORY. okay, now onto the actual album itself.
It kind of tells a story about the main protagonist (red suit guy? The Weeknd? no clue, but i'll refer to him as "The Weeknd" from now on), as he goes through a breakup at the beginning of the album, Alone Again, where he then comes to terms with the breakup (Too Late), becomes sad about it and remorseful, goes back into his vices to cope in a fictionalised Las Vegas (Heartless, Faith, Blinding Lights), and tries to get back with the girl before, apparently, dying. yeah, confusing shit.
The story of it is HEAVILY up for interpretation if you just listen to the album, so I would recommend watching the music videos and the short film. They showcase some excellent character work from Abel, in addition to everything he did with this album's rollout, ALL UNDER LOCKDOWN.
Obviously then, it doesn't take a genius to guess that this album had a massive impact. What, with Blinding Lights now being the most streamed song on spotify ever, and it probably being the single factor to getting Abel to perform, SOLO, AT THE SUPER BOWL. (please get him back for another year he deserves no covid restrictions)
standout songs:
Six. Minutes. Of. Good. Ass. Music. Simple as that. This song is the perfect sum of all the album's themes, and is a perfect segway into the outro, Until I Bleed Out, as The Weeknd sings about how regretful he is that he did what he did, and how much he wants this girl back.
Under. Rated. This song's more of an introspective on The Weeknd's career up to this point, but no specifics are named. It could go the same for any artist who blew up, reached the top, and is now thinking "Where Now?" This hits very hard at the final verse, and makes the following track, Escape From LA, hit harder.
The point where the album with 80s-inspired songs finally gets its sax solo. this got a remix with Kenny G that has a saxxier sax solo, and i encourage checking that out after listening to this one.
worst song (honestly, still good):
literally only here because its the interlude. this is still a good song, and a nice transition thematically into the title track.
CONCLUSION:
In short, this is an album that is a must-listen. It managed to make a massive impact, and get snubbed out of the GRAMMYs, all during a pandemic. This album is pretty much perfect in every single way, and will have a song that resonates with everyone, no matter what.
RATING: 10/10

I stop taking the Grammys seriously after they snubbed The Weeknd. Blinding Lights was 2020’s song of the year and they threw him under the bus. Unforgivable.
