The Whangie
This very peculiar rocky outcrop in the Kilpatrick Hills, NW of Glasgow, is one of the major attractions in the area and looks like it’s straight out of a fantasy novel. The long, narrow and winded chasm of glacial origin which separates the steep, lichen-encrusted rock walls reminded me indeed of a certain passage in the Coldfire Trilogy by Celia S. Friedman: I couldn’t help but looking up at the slice of sky, and then behind me, waiting to spot odd scaly creatures crawling down threateningly on us.
That aside, the place is as idyllic as a place can be, and the gorgeous sunny day helped painting it like a dream. Whether you’re into field botany, geology or simply hillwalking, I would certainly recommend a visit.
Oh, and if you didn’t get the subtle hint from the implicit message in the top photo, follow me for plant and nature-related original content ;)

Cracking shots of The Whangie here, a geological feature left over from the Ice age, or maybe an Earthquake, or is it?
The origin of The Whangie's name is obscure but it might derive from the old Scot's for slice (as in whang o' cheese).
This is a popular rock-climbing crag north of Glasgow on the A809 Stockiemuir to Drymen road. It's accessed via the Queen's View picnic site and is situated on the side of Auchineden Hill, where it seems almost as though a slice has been taken from the side of the hill and shunted outwards so that there are sheer crags on either side, narrowing in the middle to a tunnel, and opening out at either end
The versions vary a wee bit but according to the Folklore the devil was late for a meeting at a witches coven and went swooping round the hill in such a hurry that his tail caught and sliced open the hillside.
If you fancy going it is quite accessible on public transport from Milngavie Bus service 8 runs north past the Whangie car park.

What a stunner of a day it was yesterday in the southwest! And what a stunning location to celebrate bagging my 50th Scottish Ramblers group! 50 is the final big milestone on my journey to walking with all 55 of them, and as a consequence I'm daring to believe I might actually manage it :)
Kilmarnock Ramblers were No.50 and were superb company on the hill. Cheerful, friendly, knowledgeable and....it has to be said....well armed with fudge, wine gums, fruit loaf, tablet, banana cake and much more besides!
As I've said many times before, one of the things I like most about walking with our Ramblers Scotland groups is it takes me to places I perhaps wouldn't have visited otherwise. In this case a stretch of the Southern Upland Way that takes in Benbrack, the highest point on that particular coast-to-coast trail, and in so doing also takes in one of Andy Goldsworthy's four striding arches.
Three of the arches are on hilltops, and have been positioned so that no matter which one you are at, you can always see the other two. Erm....cloud & clag permitting of course....which certainly wasn't a problem yesterday in blazing sunshine :)
Kilmarnock Ramblers have one of the most varied programmes of all our groups, ranging from shorter and flatter routes right up to the munros. Their next lower grade walk is the White Cart Walkway in Glasgow on 23rd November, and their next mid grade walk is the famous Whangie on 1st December. Newbies always welcome, just check out the details on their website: https://kilmarnockramblers.jimdo.com/

Wee Jaunt up to the Whangie today near Glasgow! Surprisingly good day for it too :3
Also super nice to get away from the city, at least as little as I can, and remember wtf a tree looks like!  Why is it that Scottish people will walk up any hill they see? Just for the lols?  Also I havent told the people in the photo I have posted this... but you can’t see their face so its chill right?
