The Swedish national team stars' criticism of Qatar: "Makes me incredibly disappointed"
In Qatar there is no "real" league or national team for women. Now the country - and Fifa - is receiving criticism from several Swedish national team stars. - It shouldn't have to be like this, Fifa must take its responsibility, says Barcelona's Fridolina Rolfö.
The World Cup is for everyone. Fifa and its president Gianni Infantino have often repeated that message.
But in the World Cup host country Qatar, soccer is not a sport for everyone, as we were able to show in yesterday's report, when we met two soccer-playing girls in the country, who told us how difficult it is and what consequences it can have.
- It can affect a woman's chances of getting married in the future. There aren't many opportunities if a woman is known to "hang around" like that, said a player who wants to remain anonymous.
And practicing sports is "hanging around"?
- Yes, in our society. Everything that is not normal, i.e. normal for this country. Anything that is new and hasn't been done before is a shock to people.
There is no women's national team
In Qatar, there is no national women's league, other than a series consisting of six teams that play five games each for just under a month. And there is no real women's national team.
A national team was formed in 2010, the same year Qatar was awarded the 2022 World Cup. But after the team lost all three of its matches at the 2014 West Asian Championships, German national team captain Monika Staab was fired - and the team has not played an official competitive game since.
When SVT Sport tells some Swedish national team players what the situation is like for female soccer players in Qatar, they react strongly.
- It frustrates me to hear things like this. I really hope that the whole Qatar debacle is something we all learn from in the future, and that in the future you don't award championships to countries like this unless they do better and improve their regulations. I am incredibly disappointed and find it incredibly boring, says the defender, Chelsea captain Magdalena Eriksson to SVT Sport.
Hope for more from Fifa
Barcelona's Fridolina Rolfö agrees.
- We are talking about the world's biggest sport, of course it should be in all countries. My hopes are that it will exist in every country, that every girl will be able to grow up and see a professional league in every country. Right now it doesn't exist, so I hope that Fifa will be able to focus and push more for it to exist in every country.
