National Games: Sajan Prakash wins gold medal in 200m butterfly swimming
Tumblr media
Oct 06, 2022 10:20 IST Gandhinagar (Gujarat) , October 6 (AF): Sajan Prakash overcame an abdominal strain to win the gold medal in the men's 200m butterfly with a new meet record at the National Games 2022 in Gujarat on Wednesday. Olympian Sajan Prakash, representing Kerala, clocked 1:59.56 in the final to win the gold, beating his own National Games record set at the previous edition in Kerala. This is Sajan Prakash's second gold medal at the National Games 2022 after the men's 100m butterfly. Meanwhile, Hashika Ramachandra anchored the Karnataka 4x200m freestyle relay team to triumph to climb the podium at the Sardar Patel Aquatics Complex here for the fourth time in this edition but it was her incredible victory in the 200m butterfly final that set the venue alight. Ramachandra dug deep into the reserves of her energy to slip past Astha Choudhury and touch the wall in 2 minutes 19.12 seconds for her third National Games record, including one as part of the relay team, in four days. Hrutika Shriram stayed on course to repeat the golden hat-trick by winning the women's 10m platform event. Though she was self-admittedly not at her best, she did her dives well enough to pick up her second gold in three days and her 10th crown in four editions of the National Games. For a while, it looked like there would be a surprise gold for Gujarat in the swimming pool. Their gambit of fielding Aryan Nehra and Anshul Kothari in the first two legs of the 4x200m Freestyle worked well, giving rise to hopes in the hearts of the home fans. Karnataka's S Siva and Aneesh S Gowda, however, packed too much power in the next two to win by a comfortable margin. There was delight for Gujarat at the Riverfront Sports Development complex in Ahmedabad where rising Gujarat tennis player Zeel Desai helped the state retain the women's singles gold in defending champion Ankita Raina's absence. The third-seeded Zeel Desai led Karnataka's Sharmada Balu 6-2, 3-2 when the latter retired with an ankle injury. Tamil Nadu's Manish Sureshkumar also benefited from the physical discomfort and rib pain Maharashtra's Arjun Kadhe faced after winning the opening set. He could not maintain the same tempo after taking a medical time-out in the second set and Manish Sureshkumar pounced on the opportunity to win 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. Tamil Nadu's Sunayna Kuruvilla staged a dramatic comeback to win the women's singles gold. Urvashi Joshi of Maharashtra won the first two games 11-9 and 11-7 but Sunayna found her rhythm to turn the final on its head. She conceded just 13 points in winning three games to romp home the winner. The lawn bowls competition drew to a close at the Kensville Golf and Country Club near Ahmedabad with Assam's Sunil Bahadur beating Soumen Banerjee (Jharkhand) 16-9 in the men's singles final. Navneet Singh, Ayush Bharadwaj, Apurv Ashutosh Sharma and Abhishek Chug teamed up to beat West Bengal by the skin of their teeth, 15-14, in the Fours final. The Assam Pair of Tania Choudhary and Nayanmoni Saikia beat Lovely Choubey and Rupa Rani Tirkey of Jharkhand 17-10 while Manu Kumari Pal, Jaya and Pinki surprised Jharkhand's Sarita Tirkey, Anamika Lakra and Kavita Kumari 18-9 to win the Triples gold. wish i had the same energy for the olympics this year as i did in 2016 lol
nostalgically going through my rio2k16 and rio2k16-blogging tags
also this remains the best podium ever lmao
i should spend some time tonight figuring out when events are so i can watch them live before my favorite events all end, which are swimming, diving, and gymnastics lol. but I do enjoy volleyball and track and field too.

Champions, Day 3
Men. 100m free: Matthew Richards (GBR) 48.88. 200m fly: Igor Troyanovskyy (UKR) 1:57.86. 50m breast: Vladislav Gerasimenko (RUS) 27.77. 200m IM: Apostolos Papastamos (GRE) 1:59.93. 4x200m free: Russia 7:16.49
Women. 1500m free: Giulia Salin (ITA) 16:13.59. 50m back: Daria Vaskina (RUS) 27.82 CR. 200m breast: Evgeniia Chiunova (RUS) 2:23.06. 4x100m medley: 4:01.83 CR
Russia ruled the juniors so far this year in artistic swimming and diving and their swimmers also started rolling – just as they did in the previous years. Evgeniia Chiunova became their first female individual winner as she won the 200m breast by a mile (exactly 3sec) though she was not really happy as she was almost 2sec slower than in the semis… Soon came a second title among the women, Daria Vaskina reached for the wall first in the 50m back while setting a new Championship Record. And the other dash event of the day also went for the hosts thanks to Vladislav Gerasimenko’s golden touch at the wall in the breaststroke (0.12sec ahead of GB’s Archie Goodburn).
Three nations could celebrate their respective first titles in Kazan. Mathew Richards claimed gold for Great Britain, where else than in the blue-ribband event, his time (48.88) was promising and secured him a fine a win in the 100m free.
Ukraine’s Igor Troyanovskyy halted Hungary’s three-year golden run in the 200m fly, he staged a great finish to leave the Magyars’ heritage-keeper Dominik Torok behind.
Greece also enjoyed a great day as Aposotolos Papastamos earned a brilliant win in the 200m IM, just 0.05sec ahead of Israel’s Ron Polonski. The Greeks clinched a bronze in the 100m free, while Israel had a 2-3 in the medley and a silver in the women’s 50m back.
Italy’s Giulia Salin completed the 800m-1500m free double, she came up with a convincing performance over the longest distance and note that she also got a silver in the 400m free on the previous day.
The session concluded with two more titles for the host nation as they hunted down both relay titles – the women’s medley quartet even set a new Championship Record.
Quotes from the winners
Igor Troyanovskyy (UKR), 200m fly
“The final differed from the semis for only pushing even harder. I think it was a great race, my tactics worked, I really geared up for the last 50m, my arms were aching but managed to keep my speed.”
Evgeniia Chiunova (RUS), 200m breast
“I don’t have too many words to say. I think I did much better in the semi-finals. Now I was much slower. Still won.”
Matthew Richards (GBR), 100m free
“I’m quite happy, it all went well. I just wanted to keep up with the others till the turn as I knew my turn and my second 50m are good enough to be in a good position. It ended up gold, this a second best time for me so I’m really happy.”
Apostolos Papastamos (GRE), 200m IM
“To be honest, my big event is the 400m IM on the last day, that’s what I’m preparing for so it’s a kind of surprise for me. Until 150m I didn’t see the others then turning on the last leg I saw I’m ahead and I told myself, this is you have to win now. I’m happy that I could do just that.”
Daria Vaskina (RUS), 50m back
“It was a good race though it’s not a personal best for me. But I’m still satisfied to win here in Kazan.”
Vladislav Gerasimenko (RUS), 50m breast
“I think it was a good race and a good swim. For me it’s not a problem to swim this event twice within one session and usually my second swim is always better, just as today. I’m really happy, though my speed and technique was so-so but the win matters.”
Giulia Salin (ITA), 1500m free
“It was a good race, I knew the others are strong but I tried to focus on my swim. I’m happy with my time, and quite satisfied with the two gold and one silver medals. In fact, that’s much better then I expected before.”

Three WJRs, two EJRs to finish, Russia and Hungary tied at 11 titles
Quite a day to finish an outstanding meet: records were flooding in Netanya at the European Junior Swimming Championships as three junior world marks and two more European records were set by the continent’s best teenagers. Russia and Hungary were tied on gold medals, though the Russians topped the count and won the Championship Tropy. Hungary’s Ajna Kesely closed the event with 6 gold medals.

European juniors proved their quality on the last day of the event as well as they cracked a handful of records. Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi bettered his own global mark in the 100m breast, while Moldova’s Alexei Sancov thrashed the 200m WJR while winning a brilliant battle against 100m champion Nandor Nemeth (HUN), edging him out by 0.14sec. In the 100m fly, the very same margin separated Russia’s Egor Kuimov and another Hungarian, Kristof Milak. Kuimov needed a new European Junior Record to clinch the title ahead of the winner of the 200m.
The Hungarian boys captured a title, though, as Balazs Hollo maintained his nation’s traditions by coming first in the 400m IM. After turning 5th at the half-way mark he staged a hell of a finish and touched the wall ahead of Britain’s Thomas Dean who triumphed in the 200m. Italians enjoyed a fine finish, Leonardo Deplano won a thrilling 50m free final with a gap of 0.07sec. The last title also went to the Squadra Azzurra as they brought home the medley relay gold. Martinenghi was part of another world record beating performance since the quartet smashed the WJR.
Among the women, Polina Egorova and Daria Vaskina made a Russian 1-2 in the 100m back, Egorova set a new EJR en route. Ireland’s Mona McSharry made the 50-100m double in the breast, while Netherlands’ Marrit Sternbergen added the 200m IM title to her 100m free crown, a rare pairing indeed, as she won a very nice race which saw the first five coming inside 0.97sec. Belorussia’s Anastasiya Shkurdai won the fly dash with a 0.09sec advantage while the Hungarian girls retained their 4x200m relay title from last year, securing a golden tie with Russia (11 titles apiece) and a 6th victory for Ajna Kesely whose total junior European title count stands at 10 now.
Russia tops the medal table with 11 gold, 12 silver and 7 bronze, Hungary collected 11-8-2, while Italy follows with 5-3-3. The Russians clinched the Championship Trophy as it has been usual in recent year, ahead of Italy and Hungary.
Netanya was a worthy host of a magnificent event which saw 4 World Junior Records, 3 European Junior Records and 9 more Championship Records. The next turn is due in Helsinki (FIN) in the summer of 2018.
